iMac 333 cd reader / burner?
I've dug my dear old green machine out of storage and have listed it on the local 'Freecycle'. Its tray cd reader is shot, so I went to OWC to see what I could recommend the new owner get for a bootable USB1 CD reader/burner and OWC didn't list G3 iMac accessories Suggestions ? thanks, Del ( http://www.freecycle.org/ is a great local way to keep useful stuff out of the landfill) --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. New DVD RW running slow on PowerMac G4 Dual 450
Hi, I'm new to this list and a lifetime mac user. I'm not that technical but have done my share of routine upgrades. I have a G4 Dual 450 with 2GB RAM running OSX 10.3.9. I bought and installed this drive and ran an app call PatchBurn so it would work with my OS: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-116D http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827129023 It works for burning data DVDs and CD-Rs so far, haven't tried anything else. But it burns audio CDs pretty slowly, takes over 15 minutes, nowhere near the 40X peak capability of the drive. I would like to avoid intalling OSX 10.4 if possible. The 40 pin cable is the original that came with the computer. Any ideas on how to get this thing to work faster? Re: New DVD RW running slow on PowerMac G4 Dual 450
Yes I'm just burning from iTunes. I had a firewire CD-R before and it wrote much faster (14X +) before it finally died. The wierd thing with this new drive is that iTunes rarely displays the write speed, just finish time, but when it does it doesn't really get above 8X. I have my setting in iTunes to use maximum possible speed for burning. For data I'm not sure, I will have to try it again. I hope this is helpful. Endless problems with little windows on screen
Endless problems with little windows on screen I am not smart enough to know exactly what this is, but here goes: 1. A small square of about 3 inches comes bouncing across the screen, I have to stop and click the X button to make it go away. Then on another site: 2. A 2 inch window keeps coming up from below the lower right edge of the main window, repeatedly clicking on it's X simply will not rid me of this irritation. Is this a low form of a virus? If there is only one drive, then it must be on the end of the cable, and it must be plugged as Master. If there are two drives, then either drive may be Master. Obviously the remaining drive must be Slave. These conventions have only partly to do with the normal functioning. During initialization and drive roll call, the special 80-wire/40- pin cable allows the IDE chip to interrogate the drives and set itself up for best possible performance of both drives. The drives, therefore, need not be in the same performance class, although that us usually a good practice. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups G3-5 List group. This is part of the long running battle between advertisers and developers. The advertisers will almost always be a step ahead of the developers and what users will install. The main reason is the motivation. Advertisers are motivated by the money to be made, and the developers are motivated by by the annoyances created by the advertisers. And cold, hard cash will almost always trump annoyance. The hard thing to remember here is that those annoying windows are put there by people paying the web sites you visit to allow them to provide you with free content, like the commercials on free television. If no one either sees them (advertisers pay per viewing of the ad) or clicks through (pay per click), then the content providers make no money from the site, and have trouble keeping the site running. See the following post from slashdot.org: Why Your Pop-Up Blocker Doesn't Work Anymore: An anonymous reader writes If you've noticed that pop-up ad windows seem to have made an unwelcome return into your life, it's because they're not using the same easily blockable technology as before. They connect to your Power Mac G4 desktop systems using a single cable which provides 20 watts of sound (10 watts/channel) to the speakers with a frequency range of 70 hertz to 20 kilohertz. Apple Pro Speakers are different from the speakers that came with the Power Mac G4 Cube: While the Apple Pro Speakers look very similar to the Power Mac G4 Cube speakers, the Apple Pro Speakers get their power from the computer and thus require a system with an Apple speaker minijack (like the one that's on the new Power Mac G4). The Power Mac G4 Cube speakers, on the other hand, are USB-powered and are designed to work only with Power Mac G4 Cube systems. Also, the G4 Cube speakers have an external amplifier, whereas the Power Mac G4 has an internal amplifier that supports the Apple Pro Speakers. The analog-based speakers require systems with an Apple speaker minijack. They are not USB-based speakers Jeff Bequettejbeque...@tconl.com

Supposedly another 22 hours, 42 minutes remaining. If you are on a dialup connection and getting 3.3 KB/sec download speed the time to download a 275 MB file will be 275000 KB/3.3 = 8 sec divided by 60 seconds/minute = 1389 minutes divided by 60 minutes/hour = 23.15 hr. This not account for the 6.3 MB you have already downloaded. The 3.3 KB/sec seems about the same average download speed I achieved when I was on dialup. If lucky I could 5 or 6 KB/sec. The 34667 bps is bits/sec not bites/sec so you have to divide by 8 or is is 9 for modems don't remember the modem conversion to Kilobites (KB) I'm sure someone will correct my math but the time indicated does not seem out of the ordinary for dialup. ---glen --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
