In the worst case, you could always take the HD from its enclosure and
connect it in a different way, like USB, with that device Bruce
suggested, or internally if you have the right connection/adapter.

Thanks Geke, I have a kit in the mail that Bruce suggested. When it
arrives I'll try to make it work. I already have the drive out of the
case. I'll let you know. Appreciate your interest.

Then what can be the difference between the two systems, the one on
the old drive and the newly-installed one?

Can you try the drive on another computer? Or do you have a clone of
that old system you can boot from and see if the drive appears with
that one running?
Or does this HD need some driver software to be installed?
Or, if the Network setting for the Firewire port is off, could that be
the reason?

Just guessing... I hope someone recognizes the situation.

In the worst case, you could always take the HD from its enclosure and
connect it in a different way, like USB, with that device Bruce

I've always used the generic Oxford updaters on my Lacie drives, which

Stick your ear on the power supply ... is it dead quiet or do you

System Profiler will show the volume as well, if it's mounted.

If Disk Utility doesn't show it at all, something may be wrong
with the drive or enclosure. Some (generally older) FW enclosures
have master/slave/cable select issues. Try setting the drive
jumpers to Master.

Make sure the drive is plugged in all the way, sometimes it's hard

No drive case is sealed. Some are just tricky about how to open.
You could try doing a web search on "opening lacie". LaCie is a
popular drive and it's quite likely someone posted instructions on
how to open it. If not a little probing should solve the puzzle.

External drive fails to appear on Desk top?

2011-02-08 Thread John Callahan

Drive appears in System Profiler but not on the desktop?
Was using LaCie Porsche as a back up drive as a general precaution
and as computer hard drive was starting to fail. Installed new
computer hard drive. I shut down the computer, turned off the LaCie
external drive and then unplugged the firewire cable. I then
installed new hard drive in the computer and tried to start up on the
operating system that I had installed on the LaCie drive as I was
using the external drive for my main drive. A screen came up with a
icon of a file with a question mark in the center of the file icon. I
allowed this condition to exist for five minutes or so and then
installed a new OS 10.4.11 from my computer disk and the new system
loaded and I was able to start the computer. Checked the System
Profiler and found this on the profiler:

FireWire Bus:

  Maximum Speed:Up to 400 Mb/sec

The LaCie drive does not appear on the desktop or the Disk Utility.
Please help as I have the work of years loaded on the LaCie back up
drive.

Thank you so much.
