Hmm. [smiles, scratching his head in deep though] Well, instead of Lara, I'd call her Tara. Lara's age was 11 when her father wrote that letter to Von Croy, so Tara's I'd say should be about 13. Lara's manchan, I'm guessing should be called: Tara's Castle, or Tara's Home. Since the original Tomb Raider had 15 levels, I'd myself was thinking for Tomb Hunter to have about the same amout, except to be honest, I was more thinking like 10 or 13. If music has to be different from Tomb Raider itself, then certainly it can be that way, as long as the four notes of the TR theme still remain. You acctually gave me an interesting idea there Thomas, I'll discuss this more though away from the wolf pack. Re: [Audyssey] Quality games was rail racer
I fully realize that. I know a lot of people don't understand just how hard it is to program a game. I'm not even sure myself, but I know its entirely too hard for me. Id attempt to take up the cup, I have a lot of great ideas for a game, but I'm just not patient enough to do 2 years worth of work on a game, probably more for most of the games I've thought up. Who knows, maybe one day Ill manage it, but until then I guess I'll just leave the hard work up to you. - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Monday, August 06, 2007 8:01 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Quality games was rail racer Hi, In this business it is easy to get discouraged. Well that's what i meant. Both STFC and the average turn-based RPG have elements of strategy, though I'll grant that STFC and RTS lean more in that direction than the average RPG. What i meant though was that the battles are all fought via menus, even though the travel in an RPG is done in realtime. It ain't pretty when the pretty leaves you with no place to go. J.D. Re: [Audyssey] GMA game engine
Hi Damien, The VS .Net 2005 IDE and GUI is already accessible. I don't have many problems using it with Jaws 8.0 or Window eyes 6.1. Perhaps your screen reader is out of date, or you don't have the .Net IDe configured for maximum accessibility, but Visual C++, Visual Basic, and Visual C# are all pretty accessible. There is room for improvement, but it is accessible. As far as Microsoft's polacy of using .Net rather than Visual Studio 6 age languages this is a global change where accessibility has nothing to do with it. It has to do with the fact the technology is 10 years old and can't keep up with the new features, requirements, and demands of newer Windows platforms such as Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003. The .Net aim is to make it easier to port applications across Windows platforms without recompiling the application in the process or make changes in your com interface to keep up with newer standards that came out. The theory is you could compile your app for a 32 or 64 byt fversion of .Net and still be able to drop the app on a 32 byt PC without having to compile against a 32 byt version of .Net for a 32 byt os. In addition mobile devices are becoming quite handy and it is nice to be able to write an app, and run it on your Windows CE powered device without having to actually recompile the app for a tablet PC, etc. Bottom line, visual Basic 6 is old, out ran it's usefulness, and the programming world moves on without it. Re: [Audyssey] Tomb Hunter (Tomb Raider For the Blind)
Hi Trenton, Actually, Lara was 16 when her father wrote Von Croy, and asked him to train Lara in archeology. Anyway, when I do come up with my own TR clone I have to be careful how I do it so as to side step any major copyright issues. One way is developing a story line similar to TR, but come up with my own cast of characters, and given them each different bios. For example, the evil god Set is a public domain character. After all his character is 4000 years old, and shows up in old Egyptian myths and folk tales. Saving his character from TRLR is totally exceptable since Edos has no copyright rights to his character. His dark minions like mummies are completely public domain as well and I can populate my game with mummies, sword wielding skeletons, snakes, betals, and all sorts of creatures and there is nothing Edos can say about it. However, some of the characters that Lara knows like Von Croy, Jean, have to go since using them would be obvious copyright issues. Maybe Edos would look the other way, and perhaps not. Now, if I made a TR game using those characters I could release a game for free as fan fiction, but as complex a game as TR is I can't really afford to do that. TR is a complex game to write, and I would like to sell. Selling means the game has to be slightly different. As far as the music goes good question. I really like the TR music myself. However, my thoughts on this tricky and sticky subject is this. I can ship the game with it's own sounds and music which avoids any legal entanglements. However, I can post a extra pack of free sounds, that happens to be TR sounds, which end users can download and install if they accept the Edos license. That way I might be able to have my cake and eat it to. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] AGM health building block
Or, heck, you could do both. Set up items or triggers that would increase your health, triggers linked to timers so they don't just blow your health through the roof and items that may respawn. One problem is that there is not a max health value. This could be solved by the triggers thing though as they could use 100 as a constant and compare that to the player health to cause activation. Re: [Audyssey] world acoustics
Reverse echos are very difficult to make happen, as everything would be delayed. Think about it. You press a key to fire a gun. So you need to only have one sample for for instance a gun, which will sound different in both worlds. As a note: the room acoustics may need some tweaking from our side. [Audyssey] game idea:Battle Bot match
Let me say up front I am not a great programmer. but I have this Idea I may work on. It would be a play by mail game. Each player would design a fighting battle bot to play against an opponents battle bot. Each player would design the bot and then program the bot. The game would be based on a certain amount of money to buy the parts...defensive and offensive. when the bot was fully designed..and it would be designed for a specific play field. you would click on save and a text file would be generated that you can cut and paste into an email to your opponent. He would then load in his bot..and the text file you sent..and click begin match. a SAPI voice would then call off the battle to you. there would be appropiate sounds for the battle. you would not be able to change the bot during the match. you would be stricly an observer. If the programming is done right..both people should hear the same exact battle on their own computer. The outcome should be the same on each system. the text file would be encoded so no cheating would be permitted. No IP address would be needed...as the only internet you need is the EMail your opponent will send you. an editor would be provided to create the playfields. things like power up pads to recharge the bot, obstacles like walls to block shots, maybe some offensive and defensive weapons laying on the playfield to pickup? this is the basics I have hashed out so far.. any ideas on this from the gaming gallery? [Audyssey] New but different accessible software company!
Dear all, I was thinking of starting a audiogaming company called accessible soft. I was thinking of making this company different from all companies before it. First I will allow anyone to ask me to put up a piece of software, a mod, a game made by game maker, jfw scripts, . Also we will develop software, games, mods, written reviews of others software, podcasts, and more! I will give all credit to the writer. I will have regular topspead races, railracer races, sound rts servers, and audioquake games. I will have a forum, a constantly updating list of all software and games for the blind, a vintrilo server, and a mailing list. We will create quality free and low price software and games. Currently I will be using mb.com but I plan to upgrade in a month or so. Also I will not use any matterials from others without getting there express permision to do so. And I will still write a disclaimer stating who wrote it. I will be friendly with all other developers. Hi. This topic is massive and difficult to compress into one reply, but I would like to do so. To all of the developers out there who use even the .net framework. I admire you greatly, because I've looked at learning C# .net. I could figure out some more to a basic degree, but to write in that...it's amazing in and of itself. All of you guys deserve the best we can give which is patience. it's just that each of us have our own little things we want added. Mine is multiplayer...which is kind of an annoyance in AGM. I'd love to see a feature where you could switch your prospective between different players in a map to create a multiplayer aspect. Networking would be a lovely dream come true... but I'm not writing the thing, so I'll shut up about that. To all of the people who, like myself, don't have the time, talent, or toughness to learn our own programming language, AGM is our friend. No, we may not be able to do anything and everything with it...obviously, but we can at least get off each other's backs about games. I'm personally looking forward to anything anyone puts out. quote However, incase you guys aren't aware, Che has decided he's going to put it on hold because of sales not really being high enough and the overall demand for it not beig what it should. end quote I wrote an e-mail stating that Che had put railracer on hold. I never said anywhere in that e-mail that he was quitting, in fact, I thought about stating that he wasn't going to quit, because I thought something like tihs would happen. I didn't because I figured that what I said was completely obvious. Re: [Audyssey] Sapi fix was:Re: again on montezuma's error.
There are many different ways Sapi can be messed up, and therefore many different solutions, which is what makes the problem such a headache. For some people, just deleting the lexicon entry can fix it, while others will have to remove voices and jump through several other hoops. It is a complete mess and Microsoft has really dropped the ball on this one. I hope Sapi 5.3 is more stable, but it will be a while before I get vista to check it out. Later. Hi, Yes, it can be kinda tricky to replace a DLL-file, especially for one that's constantly in use by a screenreader like mine was. A workaround is to rename the file to something like sapi.dll.bak (this should work after a reboot without any screenreader running). Then you can download the new DLL-file and put it in the right folder. After a reboot you should certainly be able to delete the .bak-version and continue using the 724 kB-version. In fact I could just delete it right after the replacement. Note: This has been tested on a Windows XP Pro machine running Hal 6.53. Please also note that as Che said there are many causes for SAPI to break, so it may not work for you. - Original Message - From: Talksina [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Tuesday, August 07, 2007 9:11 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Another possible SAPI fix was: Re: Sapi fix yes. i got the file from the site and it's 724 kb, my file was 680 kb. Hi Talksina, Ok, well at least we know the proper files are installed. This has to be some weird configuration error. Hi Che, In my experience Sapi 5.3 works better, but I have no idea if it is more stable than prier versions. As a result I know what is possible with audio games, and when I first got in to audio games my first thought was these audio games are too simple, and is like going back to the Atari 2600 again. The only developer that seamed to be staying from the Space Invader and board game style of games was David Greenwood, and Shades of Doom was a huge hit with me. I felt like I could play something on the level I was use to. As far as racing games goes I have about 150 people on the pre-order list for USA Raceway and it has already outsold Rail Racer by 30 units. So I don't think it is racing in general that is Rail racer's problem. I think it honestly has to do with a couple of factors. Rail Racer isn't a triditional racing game with Nascar or Formula 1 which has it's own kind of following amung sports fans. One reason I am working on USA Raceway is I want a game similar to Nascar Thunder and Rail Racer isn't the same as racing games I like. Second, Rail Racer has a larger learning curve than most games. For example, using the mouse to lean your racer left and right takes a while to master, and it was something I didn't care to much for myself. Third, most blind computer users have some major aversion to the mouse. The minute you say this game has mouse control they hit the panic button and think they can't play the game because they think they can not use the mouse, or they don't know how to operate it. Yet, the mouse actually is a nice game controller in certain games. Che wrote: Hi Brian, you and I are on the same page. I'm not a programmer either however I am more into realtime games. This would be good. However. YOu would need the following things. 1. the generator for all the parts, probably a dll library or some such. Some random generator for random events, placement of variouls objects, etc. a place to design bots and fields. A player vs computer mode and maybe practice modes with no battle. I have sapi 5, sapi 5.1, noting over that, 5.2, 5.3? I've never bothered with that. At 10:34 a.m. 8/08/2007, you wrote: Hi Che, In my experience Sapi 5.3 works better, but I have no idea if it is more stable than prier versions. I'm really really thinking about taking out Sapi support in some of my unfinished titles, because I had no idea Sapi was going to be this much of a pain. When it works it works. When it doesn't it doesn't. Che wrote: There are many different ways Sapi can be messed up, and therefore many different solutions, which is what makes the problem such a headache. For some people, just deleting the lexicon entry can fix it, while others will have to remove voices and jump through several other hoops. It is a complete mess and Microsoft has really dropped the ball on this one. I hope Sapi 5.3 is more stable, but it will be a while before I get vista to check it out. Later. Re: [Audyssey] game idea:Battle Bot match
Theres a game out like that called BOTs, and it's text based, but I never really tried it cuz of the stupid capcta, don't know i it's still alive. google it if you're interested - Original Message - From: Shadow Dragon [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Tuesday, August 07, 2007 2:49 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] game idea:Battle Bot match Definitely an interesting concept. Reminds me a bit of Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots. Maybe if you defeat your opponent you could take parts from their bot to add to your own? Also there could be a single player mode for gaining better parts and weapons and models for your bot, there could be several base bots and a practice mode to get a little practice in before you start multiplaying. - Original Message - From: Robert Montowski [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Tuesday, August 07, 2007 10:17 AM Subject: [Audyssey] game idea:Battle Bot match Let me say up front I am not a great programmer. but I have this Idea I may work on.
