 Hi Dark,
Yes, there are not a lot of Doctor Who games, and there could be several
 reasons why that is so.
First, until very recently Doctor Who seams to have had a bigger fan
base in the UK than here in the USA. For example, When I was growing up
Doctor Who was usually on during late nights. I wouldn't have seen the
original shows at all if my dad hadn't vidio taped the shows for me to
watch in the day time. So it might not have had a prime time audience in
 the USA.
Second, over here in the USA Star Trek and star Wars are not only
popular but they are cultural icons. Writing a game, book, or making a
movie with one of those two is likely to be a good seller. Coming up
with something based on Doctor Who might bring in some fans, might make
a few more, but probably wouldn't do as well here in the USA.
Third, things are changing. The Sci-Fi channel is reviving both the
Battlestar Galactica and Doctor Who tv series here in the USA and I
imagine the number of vidio games etc we see from the mainstream market
will largely depend on how successful those two series do.
So far while viewership is good I haven't seen the usual toys, games,
and posters in stores that accompanies a really successful tv series or
 movie.
For example, when I was growing up there use to be Battlestar Galactica
figures out. I even owned a few like Starbuck, Commander Adama, the
Cylon trooper, and the Imperious Leader. However, I have not seen
similar Battlestar Galactica toys and games for the new series. Though,
they might not be trying to market the new series that way.

 Hi Bryan,
Are you kidding? I hated the Echo's voice. I would take Braille N Speak
voice over Echo any day. Though, my opinion might be based on the fact I
spent a lot of time after going blind using a Braille N Speak. It was
like a part of me all through school and college.
You see, when I first started losing my vision the teachers first put me
on the braille writer. I expressed almost from the beginning I wanted to
use a computer instead of this clunky, metal, old contraption. They of
course told me I needed to use it to learn braille and become a braille
 user. Yada, yada, yada.
Well, finally I managed to get my way and the school provided me with a
new device called a braille and Speak from Blazie Engineering. I used
the school's for a while, and got my local Lion's club to see how
wonderful a device it was so they baught me one for school and hopefully
college. After I got my own BNS it went everywhere with me. On the bus,
to school, to the store, on vacations, you name it. It was almost like
borg implanted to my person, and I didn't give it up until I managed to
get a laptop with JFW and Eloquence on it around 1998 or so.

 Bryan wrote:
The Echo was also my first synthe Then came JFD with a Braille 'N Speak
providing speech. The BNS was probably even worse than the Echo in terms
 of
 speech quality.

Re: [Audyssey] Views On Games was Out of the games dimension

2008-01-28 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Thomas,

Yeah I think that I might have had my Atari 800 xl in 1984. Can't remember
exactly what year it was. I even get mixed up on which games I played on the
Atari 2600 and which ones I played on the 800 XL. But I was programming games
using the Microsoft Extended Basic cartridge. The Atari being a game computer
had better sound ability. It had a four channel sound mixer where as the IBM
compatible computers only had a single channel. The Commodore 64 which was out
at the same time as the Atari 800 XL had a built in sound synthesizer. That
might have been cool to learn to use for game sounds, but I went with the Atari
instead. I always felt that the IBM machines could have done more with sound.
Finally they did when they added a sound card.

[Audyssey] 7-128 computer games for every one.

2008-01-28 Thread John Bannick
Jeremy,

I wrote the sound part of the 7-128 Software games.

It sounds like you have the Game Voice (our name for FreeTTS) on at the
same time as JAWS.

Just press the Equals Key and wait for a moment.
That turns the Game Voice off and on.
The Game Voice itself should say Game Voice is off when you do this.

If you want the Game Voice back on, just press the Equals Key again and
wait for a moment.
The Game Voice should then say Game Voice is on.

When you exit the Game Book, it remembers whether you have the Game Voice
on or off, so you only have to do this once.

Once you have the speech the way you want it, you might press the F2 key to
get tips especially organized for gamers who are blind. Try this anywhere
in the Game Book and you should get information specific to where you are.

I think that we never can forget that the most important than select a best

 Hi,
I haven't either. Though, one work around I can think of is try and
 jump
on to the platform a step or two away from the ledge. It isn't
 necessary
to be standing exactly upon a ledge to land on a vanishing platform.
Angela can jump a good distance across those spike, lava, and fire
 pits.
I might also add if you run directly off the end of a platform you are
going to fall in or on whatever is below. The platforms don't cover the
entire distance of the pits so you do have to be certain to jump before
you get to the end of one otherwise Angela is going to land in
 something
 mighty unpleasant below.

This weekend I have began porting Raceway and Tomb Raider to Java

I have decided in the interests of the cross platform nature of the
games as well as end user complaints of Sapi 5 during Monte testing
 I am
probably going to return to including pre-recorded voice files in
 the
games. However, before I do so out of the voices below which would
 you
personally like to see for Raceway and other USA Games.

 ATT Crystal
 ATT Mike
 Eloquence Reed
 Scansoft Caren
 Scansoft Emily

Hi Corry,
Well, since I had to buy two laptops I didn't buy something quite as
nice but I purchased two Compaq's with a 3.6 GHZ processor, 1 GB of ram,
120 GB hard drive, 3 USB 2.0 ports, an 8 speed duel layer burner, a 15.4
inch wide screen display, and Vista Home Basic. While I would have liked
something like a Duo processor I didn't have the cash to get two of them.

 if
one of them was a computer then yes. In fact I was thinking of using

 Since

 it
would be all right for a synthe there.

 Hi Bryan,
I wasn't talking about using synths for characters. I was meaning for
self-voicing menus, buttons, numbers, and the day to day game info. For
specific game characters like cut senes etc of course the ideal here
would be human voices and I wouldn't mind having a few voice acters do
 that.

 Bryan wrote:
While that's understandable in some ways, it still detracts from the
gameplay in my opinion. That was a big flaw with Pacman Talks in my

Synthes are fine for stats and things but as far as I'm concerned they
 just
 shouldn't play characters.

Re: [Audyssey] Doctor Who Games was game releases

2008-01-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Daren,
Good point. If there were to be a Dr. Who game created it would have to
be more puzzle oriented rather than violence oriented. That was one of
the things I always liked about the shows. Who always used the greatest
weapon of all, his head.
Yet, a puzzle oriented game would not have much replay value after the
puzzles were solved. It reminds me of a game like Chillingham. Once you
solve all the puzzles there is little point in playing the game again
unless you just want to run through the game for the heck of it.

Darren Harris wrote:
Yes it's true, ok let me clarify what I mean.

The doctor, doesn't by nature run around with guns and the like. It's no
point in having a character running round with a dalek gun blasting
everything in site. Like what they got you to do in that side scroler
that was mentioned on this list not to long ago. The doctor solves
puzzels, not with a nuke but with his brain. That's why creatures such
as the daleks etc etc never beet something like that because they just
blast their way out and not think their way out of a situation.

Re: [Audyssey] Doctor Who Games was game releases

2008-01-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,
Yeah, that was one of the things I always liked about Dr. Who. The time
travel aspect of the tv series. One minute Dr. Who and his assistant
might be in 19th century London and the next far into the future on some
unknown planet.
One of the shows I always liked was Pyramids of Mars. Do you remember
that one? I always thought that one was kind of cool.
Of course, I think Destiny of the Dalek's was probably the best show of
the classic Who series. I watched every epasode of the Dalek's in them
over and over again, and wouldn't mind getting the boxed set if I can
find it.
Speaking of cool Dr. Who things I always liked Who's robot dog, K9. I
always thought it was a nifty and cool thing to take around with him not
only through time but on space travel.
Speaking of Dr. Who shows do you remember the show with those squid
creatures called the peskitons or something like that? They landed on
earth, and they were trying to take over London?

Dark wrote:
Well, the story side of things isn't as bad with Doctor who, sinse being
about time travel, it would be quite possible to have a doctor who story set
in the future or the passed.

for example, if you wanted a story about combatting a Dalek space fleet, set
it around the time of Destiny of the Daleks (or earlier), when the Daleks
were strong, stil had a home planet etc.

If you want a story about hunting a single Dalek through a maze, set it
later, around the time of the time war.

It wouldn't even matter what Doctor you used As long as you got the right
doctor with the right assistant, or even no assistant, it would be
 fine.

for all Doctor who fans, there is a fantastic encyclopedia site with
detailed (and highly readable), synopsis of everything ever published
related to Doctor who, along with usual encyclopedia info about how the
 different stories relate.

(I was quite impressed that in their list of Doctor who audios they even
included the three Doctor who novels done by the rnib on talking book).

 the site is at http://www.drwhoguide.com/who.htm

 Beware the Who!

Trouble is, if you do a dr who story or even a star trek story or game,
you'd have to pay real attention to detail and keep definitely in
character. So it will take as much programming skill to do such a thing
just as it would take as much skill and work in story writing. So
anything like that would be a very big project.

Indeed Tom, the different environments and the traveling is one of my
 favourite things about the program.

I'll be watching destiny of the Daleks soon, sinse it's on the Davros
 box
set I mentioned, though as my friend who bought it for me has to
 dash
off to yutaar for several weeks and really wants to watch the bits we
 didn't
watch together, I've leant it to him for the time being.

The only time I remember the pescatons was in a rather slap dash put
together audio play with Tom baker, not half as good as some of the

other Bbc doctor who audios like paradise of death or Ghosts of N space.

Personally, my favourite doctors were John Pertwy, doctor 3, and
 Colin
baker, doctor 6 (who also is doing most of the doctor who modern
 audios).

there are so many good stories I like, it would just take ages
 mentioning
 them all.

Picking two though I'd have to say Planet of the spiders, --- where even
 the
doctor met an enemy that was more powerful, and more inteligent than
him, --- and even the doctor was scared (it's the one where john pertwy
regenerates into tom baker, and trial of a time lord, the huge 14
episode long monstrosity of a story with Colin baker, involving the
 doctor
being put on trial for interfering in the course of history.

Great, and really appocalyptic, with some of the doctor's worst enemies
(including an evil version of himself and the master).

but if I go on like this things will get extremely Ot.

 Dark.

 Hi Dark,
Yeah, I am rather fond of the Daniel voice myself. It sounds nearly
human, and I do a lot of reading and game playing with that voice
myself. It also sounds real good with Sound RTS which comes with a
pre-recorded version of Daniel with the game.
Though, I have noticed the higher quality the voice the less responsive
it is. For example I really like the Neospeech voices, Kate and Paul,
but they are too slow for my needs. On the other hand Espeak sounds like
a robot, but I can really crank it up to super speed and get work done.

 Dark wrote:

sinse it has to go through the sapi driver and can't interact directly
 with
orphius the way something like eloquence could, I find it slightly slow
 to
use with hal, but for all my sapi gammes I'm amazed at the amount of
difference it makes in the game, especially to something with complex
 nmbers
and a lot of speach like lone wolf, or Jim's trucker games.

I was quite happy using Ms mike (and before Jim put the software on his
site, ms sam), but now i actually wouldn't fancy going back to it, sinse
playing with a fairly human and understandable voice means I can
 concentrate
on what is happening in the game, and not have to imagine that my sub
commander or golf caddy is a cyber man.

Of course, there are lots of occasions 9as you mention tom working with
 free
tts), where a robotic synth is necessary, which is fine, but I do think
 that
in developing games, particularly games with acted characters or a
 set
atmosphere, the sound of the synth voice should be taken into account as
much as possible, especially when it is portraying characters in the game
such as copter man, the opponents in X hour etc.

On the other hand, the doctor does do a fair amount of sneaking about
avoiding enemies or drawing them into traps, or letting an enemy destroy
themselves.

the game wouldn't have to be puzle orientated, simply not involve huge
amounts of slaying enemies out of course.

I could imagine a doctor who game similar in design to Sarah working rather
well, the doctor could even use modifications from his Tardis to
temporarily stop time and stun enemies, lol!

I really want to get that one, it sounds great!

Recently in the box set I mentioned I also got the I davros series from
Big
finish, which my friend and I listened to all the way through.

that was most impressive, and explained a lot about Davros' past and his

motivation as well as the kaled society which would resort to the
creation
of Daleks. also, it sets up genesis of the Daleks very nicely.

i'll admit though, I'm a big Davros fan, especially with the way he is
constantly batling with his creations.

My friend thought Davros might be the big introduction in the upcoming
series of doctor who, the way the master was last season. I deffinately
hope
so.

Yeah I liked that, but unfortunately, after that, the dalek stories
got tacky after that because they did davros overkill in my honest
opinion. They done some good stories with him but I think to have him
involved in every story after that 1 was silly. Did you ever listen to

big finishes dalek empire? Now there's a good spinoff if ever I saw 1.

they have done an excellent job with that. And if you haven't herd it,

then it's well worth a read.

 Hi Dark,
Yeah, that was one of the things I always liked about Dr. Who. The
time travel aspect of the tv series. One minute Dr. Who and his
assistant might be in 19th century London and the next far into the
 future on some

 unknown planet.
One of the shows I always liked was Pyramids of Mars. Do you remember
that one? I always thought that one was kind of cool. Of course, I
think Destiny of the Dalek's was probably the best show of the classic

Who series. I watched every epasode of the Dalek's in them over and
over again, and wouldn't mind getting the boxed set if I can find it.
Speaking of cool Dr. Who things I always liked Who's robot dog, K9.
I
always thought it was a nifty and cool thing to take around with him
not

only through time but on space travel.
Speaking of Dr. Who shows do you remember the show with those squid
creatures called the peskitons or something like that? They landed on
earth, and they were trying to take over London?

 Dark wrote:
Well, the story side of things isn't as bad with Doctor who, sinse
being about time travel, it would be quite possible to have a doctor

for example, if you wanted a story about combatting a Dalek space
fleet, set it around the time of Destiny of the Daleks (or earlier),
 when the
 Daleks
were strong, stil had a home planet etc.

If you want a story about hunting a single Dalek through a maze, set
it later, around the time of the time war.

It wouldn't even matter what Doctor you used As long as you got the
right doctor with the right assistant, or even no assistant, it
 would
 be
 fine.

for all Doctor who fans, there is a fantastic encyclopedia site with
detailed (and highly readable), synopsis of everything ever published

related to Doctor who, along with usual encyclopedia info about
 how the
 different stories relate.

(I was quite impressed that in their list of Doctor who audios they
even included the three Doctor who novels done by the rnib on talking
 book).

 the site is at http://www.drwhoguide.com/who.htm

 Hi Dark,
Yes, there are not a lot of Doctor Who games, and there could be several
 reasons why that is so.

 Dark wrote:
Indeed tom, the box set is great and has I think every appearence of
 Davros
in Doctor who, both in the original series and in later audio plays,
 which is cool!

 My friend is incredibly generous!

As has been said before, Daleks in an audiogame would be great,
 though
interestingly enough, unlike startrek and just about every single
 successful
film series out there, there haven't I think been many doctor who games
 even
 in the mainstream.

I remember a particularly abysmal side scroller on the old Comador
 amigar,
and I once heard of an interactive story game, but other than that I
 don't
think there have been many at all!

then again, with the new series becoming so popular, it wouldn't surprise
 me
if there ends up being a game released as well.

 Beware the Grue!

 Dark.

I still like trek myself.
Unfortunately except for startrek enterprise its all over, and the network
plays trek at 10am on sondays, and I always miss it because I walk on the times
it plays.
The only show which plays a good time is stargate atlantis.
Its starwars, and ds9 and yeah it reminds me of both those.
Really good.
I think voyager emulates lost in space.
At 05:38 a.m. 29/01/2008, you wrote:
Hi Dark,
Well, the original Battlestar Galactica series really was short lived.
When it came out in 78 it was pretty popular and there was the usual
toys, games, and comic books that went along with the tv show. They even
had really cool Battlestar Galactica cylon figures that lit up and the
eye would move from side to side like it does on the show.
However, in 1980 the producers decided to set the 1980 season years
after the original voyage to Earth, and made some serious changes in the
cast and crew of the Galactica. While there were some good shows from
the 1980 season like the one where Star Buck crash lands on a planet,
and sends his son to the Galactica while he stays behind and the one
where the Galactica goes back in time to fight the Natzis the season was
a big turn off for fans. The show was soon canceled after that.
However, in 2004 or 2005 the Sci-Fi channel has revived the Battlestar
Galactica tv show with a bunch of changes. Some of the changes I don't
care for like making Star Buck a woman, but the tv show is not too bad.
Better than a lot of other stuff on tv.

Dark wrote:
 Hi tom.

well even overhere startrek and starwars are pretty much at icon status, and
only now is doctor who coming back into fashion. Part of the problem of
course, was that the original series was canceled in 1989, so all the old
company deals that supported it weren't really around at the time I was
growing up. In fact, i only really became interested in doctor who because
we happened to get sky Tv, and doctor who was shown every Sunday morning
(which my parents subsequently taped for me).

From what I've read though the new series, - and especially the
torchwood spin off seem to be doing extremely well, and I've seen figures
and indeed, remote control Daleks in the shops.

From what you say though, Battlestar galactica had about the same
 experience
overhere as doctor who got in the states before the new series. I only by
chance caught the first two hour long special on a showing of classic Scifi
films, and later watched the hole loton the Scifi channel, but I had no
idea the series had that sort of status in America, and was actually
quite surprised when i heard of the new series.

I suspect there will be a doctor who game of some kind in the mainstream at
some point, but as has been said, an audio game based on doctor who, -
the same way we have Jedi quake and final conflict for those series would be
really nice for long time fans, - though at the moment I'm stil on my
rewatch through next gen in preparation for watching all of Ds9 later on.

 Beware the who!

Better than other stuff on Tv? judging by a lot of the stuff I've seen
that's not hard ;D.

I knew about the 2004 revival, but unfortunately overhere it was all shown
on sky, and at that poin my parents didn't have the sky digital with Hd
which can automatically reccord series of programs, so I never got to watch
it.

it's on my list of things to wrent on Dvd at some point.

I never really knew about the later series, I just remember what must have
been the 1978 version which begins with the destruction of the home planets
by the Cylons and the search for earth.

Again though, it's probably all available on Dvd now as are a lot of things.

for example, i recently acquired the V miniseries and V the final
battle, another great old 80's sf program (which I'm willing to bet
you've seen), which is apparently going to be revived in the comparatively
near future with a new film.

Hi,
Yeah, the older IBM systems had poor quality sound up until Creative
Labs created the Soundblaster sound cards. Especially, the Soundblaster
16 was a huge leap forward for sound on the IBM platforms. Though,
ironically allot of games for IBM's didn't have sound or high quality
sound until MS introduced DirectX for Windows 95. Before that to support
a soundcard a developer had to create their own DirectSound type API to
support the sound cards. Which most often they only supported
Soundblaster and Soundblaster compatible cards. Everyone else was out of
luck.
As for the Comidor 64 I got to tinker with them growing up, but I never
owned one. I would have really liked to had a chanse to explore them
further back then. Now, days you might be able to find one on Ebay as an
antique. Lol!

games using the Microsoft Extended Basic cartridge. The Atari being a game
computer had better sound ability. It had a four channel sound mixer where
as the IBM compatible computers only had a single channel. The Commodore 64
which was out at the same time as the Atari 800 XL had a built in sound

I went with the Atari instead. I always felt that the IBM machines could

 Hi Bryan,
Are you kidding?

The BNS was probably even worse than the Echo in
 terms
 of
 speech quality.

 Hi Dark,
Yep. The entire original Battlestar Galactica series comes in one boxed
set. Well, it doesn't exactly come in a box. My set actually came in a
special Battlestar Galactica collecters Cylon head. Though, I think they
no longer offer the Cylon head boxed set any more.
Now, I think we both should stop chatting about tv. We are going way way
off topic, and if I go on about my favorite sf shows we will be hear all

Re: [Audyssey] voting on game of the year

2008-01-28 Thread Dark
Hi Che.

Certainly I like the idea of voting, especially if we can include all
appropriate games, publicize things properly and get a result that actually
is meaningful.

As to whether the vote is run from your site using your scripts or somewhere
else though, - to be honest whatever is easiest for Tom, raul, ron and
anyone else involved would be fine with me, sinse afterall it's them
who are organizing the mechanics of the thing.

Your scripts would (judging from the voting I've seen for the various rr
tracks), certainly do the job I think, but the decision isn't really up
to me, and I certainly don't have the technical know how for it anyway.

Appologies for lack of anything constructive here.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

As I stated before, they are ready to go, all I have to do is set up the

I've had various votes for things on the site and it all works fine.
Let me know what ya think folks . So far not many people have shown much
interest in voting anyway, so it may be a moot point. Or maybe people are

Hi,
Thank You Shaun, I probably didn't put the minigame in the Inno

There will be different enemies, and random bioweapons and bombs thrown at
you during the game that bounces you back to Level 1, and difficult enemies
that require several hits in little time. We have an okay basic game
engine established, now we're working on making this game difficult.

Re: [Audyssey] copyrights

2008-01-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Bryan,
Oh, yeah. Lucas Arts is very protective of their Star Wars copyrights.
Have you read the Star Wars terms of use lately? If not here is a small
quote from the Star Wars terms of use snipped from their license agreement.

Quote
STAR WARS; STAR WARS
: EPISODE I THE PHANTOM MENACE;
STAR WARS: EPISODE II ATTACK OF THE CLONES;
STAR WARS
: EPISODE III REVENGE OF THE SITH; STAR WARS
: EPISODE IV A NEW HOPE;
STAR WARS: EPISODE V THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK; STAR WARS
: EPISODE VI RETURN OF THE JEDI (collectively referred to herein as the “
Star Wars
Pictures”) and all other Lucasfilm productions, and all logos,
characters, artwork,
stories, information, names, software, and other elements associated
thereto are the sole and
exclusive property of Lucasfilm Ltd.. Any use of any of the materials on
this Site
other than for private, non-commercial viewing purposes is strictly
prohibited.
The sale, auction, lease, loan, gift, trade or barter, or use of any of
the Star Wars materials
contained herein, for any other purpose except as expressly permitted
pursuant to
these Terms of Use, in any form, media or technology now known or
hereafter developed,
including the use of any of the aforementioned materials on any other
Web site or
networked computer environment, without a prior written consent from
Lucas, is expressly
prohibited. Except as expressly provided for under the Terms of Use, the
creation
of derivative works based on the materials contained herein is expressly
prohibited.
You may download one copy of the materials on any single computer for
your personal,
non-commercial home use only, provided you keep intact all copyright and
other proprietary
notices. Modification of the materials or use of the materials for any
other purpose
is a violation of Lucas’s copyright and other proprietary rights.
End quote

That is only part of the license agreement, and what I did show is very
strongly worded. I read later on in the agreement that any ideas,
emails, stories, pictures, etc you create with Star Wars instantly
becomes the property of Lucas Film and Lucas Arts no questions asked. So
even if I wrote such a game according to the terms of use section of the
license agreement they have the right to take the game away, destroy it,
or whatever they want to do with it. Kind of hard to fight a license
agreement like that in court blind or not.
While some developer can sit around saying they won't bother me because
I am blind that is being a bit unrealistic. They might not, but then
again they have every legal right to do so. Their license agreement
sounds like they are pretty serious and they don't take very kindly to
any copyright violation in any way shape or form. Even though they may
be in the wrong for not offering an accessible SW game for us.

Bryan wrote:
Especially since the folks at Lucas Arts in particular seem to be such
jerks. I've heard a lot of things about them, that they've been known to
attack fan sites for even inadvertently violating a copyright.

Re: [Audyssey] Doctor Who Games was game releases

2008-01-28 Thread Darren Harris
Hi thomas,

But that all depends on the story as well. I mean if the story is
sufficiently good then people may just play it purely for the story. You
can watch a movie or read a book multiple times, but playing a story as
well is just as good. But the puzzel itself could have multiple choices.
Which would take longer to write but sometimes it's the best games that
take the longest time right?

Hi Daren,

[Audyssey] VB 6.0

2008-01-28 Thread Kuvvosh
I'm wanting to start back into programming, yet it's been years since I've
played around with VB.

Now since I went blind, VB looks so much different, and I kind of lost on
how to go about making my class and make it where it's able to be used by
either a SAPI or a screen reader.

Is there any lesion on how to creat the main menu of a game?

Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] Doctor Who Games was game releases

2008-01-28 Thread Dark
Indeed Tom, the different environments and the traveling is one of my
favourite things about the program.

I'll be watching destiny of the Daleks soon, sinse it's on the Davros box
set I mentioned, though as my friend who bought it for me has to dash
off to yutaar for several weeks and really wants to watch the bits we didn't
watch together, I've leant it to him for the time being.

The only time I remember the pescatons was in a rather slap dash put
together audio play with Tom baker, not half as good as some of the
other Bbc doctor who audios like paradise of death or Ghosts of N space.

Personally, my favourite doctors were John Pertwy, doctor 3, and Colin
baker, doctor 6 (who also is doing most of the doctor who modern
audios).

there are so many good stories I like, it would just take ages mentioning
them all.

Picking two though I'd have to say Planet of the spiders, --- where even the
doctor met an enemy that was more powerful, and more inteligent than
him, --- and even the doctor was scared (it's the one where john pertwy
regenerates into tom baker, and trial of a time lord, the huge 14
episode long monstrosity of a story with Colin baker, involving the doctor
being put on trial for interfering in the course of history.

Great, and really appocalyptic, with some of the doctor's worst enemies
(including an evil version of himself and the master).

but if I go on like this things will get extremely Ot.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] reused code - Re: Accessible Game releases, 2007

2008-01-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi John,
I was reading some documentation on java.sun.com on Java 6, and
according to the Sun docs on Java 6 an application is either cold
started or warm started according to when it is launched.
A cold startup is called a cold startup when an application is first
run. The first time a Java application like FreeTTS is first run all the
required JRE components are loaded into the system's cach which
obviously has a longer load time than if the Java runtime components
were in the cach.
A warm startup is called a warm startup when a Java 6 app is launched
and the JRE components are already in the system cach. Obviously, the
load and access time for the application is faster because the
application doesn't have to wait for the JRE components to be loaded
into the system's cach.
i am sure you know what i am talking about, but you may not have been
aware of the official Sun terminology for the different startup types.
Smile

John Bannick wrote:
 Thomas,

What means warm started re FreeTTS?

I just invoke it when it's needed.

Therefore, there is a delay the first time it is called.

Have you some magic to share?

Re: [Audyssey] Doctor Who Games was game releases

2008-01-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Darren,
Yeah, often times having a good back story is as important to the player
as the game play itself. Just think of the reaction from some members on
list when I mentioned I'd take out any Tomb Raider logos and characters
out of my tomb hunting game. They haven't seen or heard my game, but the
draw of the Tomb Raider and characters is enough to get attention
without the games content, plot, etc being revealed.
Anyway, adding random puzzles or other elements of that nature might
make the game more interesting to play. I agree a long drawn out game is
the most rewarding and fun to me. That is one reason I play Sarah a lot.

Re: [Audyssey] Doctor Who Games was game releases

2008-01-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,
Well, the original Battlestar Galactica series really was short lived.

From what you say though, Battlestar galactica had about the same experience
overhere as doctor who got in the states before the new series. I only by
chance caught the first two hour long special on a showing of classic Scifi
films, and later watched the hole loton the Scifi channel, but I had no
idea the series had that sort of status in America, and was actually
quite surprised when i heard of the new series.

 Dark.

well even overhere startrek and starwars are pretty much at icon status,
and
only now is doctor who coming back into fashion. Part of the problem of
course, was that the original series was canceled in 1989, so all the
old
company deals that supported it weren't really around at the time I was
growing up. In fact, i only really became interested in doctor who
because
we happened to get sky Tv, and doctor who was shown every Sunday morning

(which my parents subsequently taped for me).

From what I've read though the new series, - and especially the
torchwood spin off seem to be doing extremely well, and I've seen
figures
and indeed, remote control Daleks in the shops.

From what you say though, Battlestar galactica had about the same
experience
overhere as doctor who got in the states before the new series. I only
by
chance caught the first two hour long special on a showing of classic
Scifi
films, and later watched the hole loton the Scifi channel, but I
had no
idea the series had that sort of status in America, and was
actually
quite surprised when i heard of the new series.

I suspect there will be a doctor who game of some kind in the mainstream
at
some point, but as has been said, an audio game based on doctor who,
-
the same way we have Jedi quake and final conflict for those series
would be
really nice for long time fans, - though at the moment I'm stil on
my
rewatch through next gen in preparation for watching all of Ds9 later
on.

Beware the who!

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] Views On Games was Out of the games dimension

2008-01-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,
Yeah, I am rather fond of the Daniel voice myself.

Dark wrote:

sinse it has to go through the sapi driver and can't interact directly with
orphius the way something like eloquence could, I find it slightly slow to
use with hal, but for all my sapi gammes I'm amazed at the amount of
difference it makes in the game, especially to something with complex nmbers
and a lot of speach like lone wolf, or Jim's trucker games.

I was quite happy using Ms mike (and before Jim put the software on his
site, ms sam), but now i actually wouldn't fancy going back to it, sinse
playing with a fairly human and understandable voice means I can concentrate
on what is happening in the game, and not have to imagine that my sub
commander or golf caddy is a cyber man.

Of course, there are lots of occasions 9as you mention tom working with free
tts), where a robotic synth is necessary, which is fine, but I do think that
in developing games, particularly games with acted characters or a set
atmosphere, the sound of the synth voice should be taken into account as
much as possible, especially when it is portraying characters in the game
such as copter man, the opponents in X hour etc.

 Beware the Grue!

  Hi Thomas,
Just my opinion, but I think there are some things the membership of the
list should discuss regarding how we are going to go about this before we
start organizing behind the scenes.
Refer to my previous message to Dark for my thoughts on nominating games.
We could put a list on the web site of every game released last year from
which people can nominate if we go that route.
Also, perhaps there should be some discussion about various categories for
games.
  Just my 2 cents worth.
  Later,

Is there any lesion on how to creat the main menu of a game?

Beware the Grue!

  Hi Dark,
Well, we can do any setup for the voting we want, which is why we need
feedback from the members here as to what they want.
I think categories should have nominated entrants myself, so we don't
 have
to include every single game made last year. If people don't think enough
of a game to nominate it for various categories, then there isn't much
 point
in including it in the voting it seems to me.
Perhaps a month would be enough time for nominations to be collected for
various categories, then a couple weeks for voting, then the results could
be posted on list, on the web page and in Rons mag.
  Any thoughts out there?

 Hi Che.

Certainly I like the idea of voting, especially if we can include all
appropriate games, publicize things properly and get a result that
 actually
 is meaningful.

As to whether the vote is run from your site using your scripts or
 somewhere
else though, - to be honest whatever is easiest for Tom, raul, ron

anyone else involved would be fine with me, sinse afterall it's them
who are organizing the mechanics of the thing.

Your scripts would (judging from the voting I've seen for the various rr

 up
to me, and I certainly don't have the technical know how for it
 anyway.

Appologies for lack of anything constructive here.

Re: [Audyssey] Views On Games was Out of the games dimension

2008-01-28 Thread Dark
Hmmm, I only thought the unresponsiveness with daniel was caused by orphius
having to run through Sapi, maybe not.

I must ring dolphin and see if I can configure Hal so as to use orphius for
speaking while writing, and screen navigation, but Daniel while in
continuous document read, so that I can enjoy what I'm reading.

Unfortunately though, sinse Daniel runs through sapi and not directly
through orphius the way some other synth voices do I don't think this will
be possible.

Stil, i might try one of the sapi enabled readers, I've always fancied
Hp lovecraft (available from wikipedia), but found the experience of trying
to read weerd horor with orphius and alan not to work very well.

Certainly I like the idea of voting, especially if we can include all
appropriate games, publicize things properly and get a result that
 actually
 is meaningful.

As to whether the vote is run from your site using your scripts or

Re: [Audyssey] Doctor Who Games was game releases

2008-01-28 Thread Dark

 Hi tom.

well even overhere startrek and starwars are pretty much at icon status,
 and
only now is doctor who coming back into fashion.

 Dark.

Once you have the speech the way you want it, you might press the F2 key
 to
get tips especially organized for gamers who are blind. Try this anywhere
in the Game Book and you should get information specific to where you are.

[Audyssey] 7-128 computer games for every one.

2008-01-28 Thread John Bannick
Jeremy,

We have a solution.

I'm assuming that you are trying to play one of the Inspector Cyndi in
Newport mysteries because those are the only games with ambient sounds.

You can turn off the background music, and that may help some.
But the version of the Game Book you have now won't let you turn off the
ambient sounds.

I talked with the rest of the crew here and we decided to make the ambient
sounds also turn off when you turn off the music.
In fact, I've just now done the coding and tested it.

Our QA folks need to test this before we can release it.

Then we'll send you a copy.

So please email your postal address to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I will have our Production folks mail you a replacement CD that contains a
Game Book that lets you turn off the ambient sounds along with the
background music. Just uninstall what you've got and install the new Game Book.

No cost to you. We just want people to enjoy our stuff.

Thanks for letting us know about this problem. It will help others enjoy
the games.

[Audyssey] Microsoft flight simulator 2002 help

2008-01-28 Thread Bo
Hello everyone,
I am kind of new at sending messages to people, but I hope to do better in
the future. I do have a question it is about Microsoft flight simulator 2002.
I have heard from the internet, and by Scott Shades podcasts that you can
perform a simulated flight using FS Navigator along with using some additional
add ons.Mr. Shade has taught me alot on what to do , but he has not completely
shown how to move the aircraft while on the ground, and the takeoff thru
the landing phase. If you have any suggestions or experience that you will
share I would be greatly appreciated. I know that some blind people might think
that it is a waste of time learning how to fly a plane, but I used to be a
pilot in my former sighted life, and if anyone trying this needs any help just
ask, after all those of us without sight have to band together for what we
want. I think that it is a shame that more pc games are not accessible to the
blind gamer. Well thanks for letting me bend your ear for a minute or two.
Take care all and have a nice day.

That's because you're not actually supposed to catch that particular

You have to follow it to the teleporter.

2008-01-28 Thread Tj
Hi Bow,

Here's what you've got to do.

1. Make sure your Fly FP box is checked.
2. Make sure your ap box is checked.
3. Check your alt, and I think it's heading. Yes.
4. Check your IAS (indicated airspead).
5. Your plane will start powering up and you'll hear your engines cycling,
speeding up.
6. Hit the control and period I think it is. It's been a while sense I've
done it.
7. Off you go. Just don't turn off autopilot unless you want to ahve a
nifty little crash.

Tootles.

The game is microsoft flight simulator. It's actually a mainstream game.
You've got to use FSnavigator to make it accessible. The website for the
add on is www.fsnavigator.com
I don't know where you can get FS 2k2. Ebay or simmarket.com is a good
starting place.

Subject: [circus13_productions] New Project needs voices!

I was approached a couple weeks ago by a man named Jerry Grayson who
published some RPG stuff, very cool stuff btw. But anyway, he wants
to promote his newest game world called Hellas by putting out a radio
drama of it. He's writing and directing and all he wants me to do is
produce it and probably host it.

Hellas is a space opera based off the classic Greek Mythos, including
Trojans, Athena, Amazons and the like.

I know, it's not Autumn or Feedback or Falcon Banner, but Circus-13 is
still kinda small.

Anyway, he's got some people cast (through e-mails from me), and the
last one he sent me reads thus:

Ok, here is what I have so far... Know anyone men and women who sound
ambiguously ethnic? I need a strong male voice and a attractive
sounding female voice.

For any of you interested (who can sound ambiguously ethnic), please
contact me off-list and I'll get you set up with casting info and
everything.
