Re: [Audyssey] Entombed

2009-01-04 Thread Dakotah Rickard
My concern is how easy it is to lose a limb. It's very realistic.
Trust me. The problem is that if you get a decent hit on your head,
you're pretty much incapable of doing anything about it. Since there's
also only one kind of armor, you can't wear things to protect your
limbs, either.

Maybe it should be more traumatic to lose a limb, but losing a limb
would be harder.

I'll try to address that too. The next version will have a lot more to

Re: [Audyssey] Jim Kitchens Games under Vista

2009-01-04 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Thomas,
I discovered that I only had to take the first step in your suggestions to
get Jim Kitchen's games to work on my Vista computer.

First of all, I have User Account Control enabled.

1. arrow to the setup for the game you want to install, press the
Windows context key, and arrow to run as administrator. This will launch
the setup with admin rights that User Account Control requires for some
setup/installers.

I did this for WinKit that creates the menus then also for each game I
installed into it.

I installed to the default location c:\Program Files\Kitchensinc.
So for me it was not too dificult.

Hi,
Yes, Jim Kitchen's games will work with Vista, but there are some things
you need to do in order to make them work properly under Windows Vista.
If you have User Account Control enabled and want the added security of
User Account Control then is is what you should do.
1. arrow to the setup for the game you want to install, press the
Windows context key, and arrow to run as administrator. This will launch
the setup with admin rights that User Account Control requires for some
setup/installers.
2. Instead of installing to the default location like
c:\Program Files\Kitchensinc.
you need to install it to a local directory that you have full rights
to. Usually it is something like
c:\Users\User Name\Games\Kitchinsinc.
For example, my user name on my computer is Thomas. So under Windows
Vista I install all of Jim's games to
c:\Users\Thomas\Games\Kitchensinc.
What I generally do is copy the Kitchensinc folder from
c:\program files
to my local directory before installing any of the games.
Now, if thissounds too difficult for you to do, too confusing, the only
other suggestion is to turn User Account Control off completely. It is
this new security feature of Windows vista that accounts for most of the
problems with games under Vista. Especially, those written prier to
Vista's release.

[Audyssey] Pinball classic?

2009-01-04 Thread lelia
Hi all, first I think I made a mistake and posted this to the wrong list at
first so even though I can't do anything about that mistake I'm going to ask
the same thing here.

I just downloaded the demo version of pinball classic from draconis and for one
thing, I've never played pinball but I've heard the sounds of others playing.
I assumed that the object was to keep the ball from going to far either to the
right or left? so when i played the pacman table that's what I tried to do and
some how though I'm nto sure how I got like 3 million points? Can someone tell
me some tips on how to play pinball? I looked at the manual and it said to use
the shift keys for the flippers and that is what I did.

Hoping all that made sense.

2009-01-04 Thread Michael Feir
That's interesting. The way Dan Zingaro released it, you need two files.
There's the superdeakout demo file and then you need the sdfull.exe file. It
may actually be a zip file. I can't remember. If you have both those files
and install them correctly, you get the full game which has been released as
freeware. I suspect somebody may have figured that some users of Klango may
have found it hard to understand that you have to install the demo first and
then use the sdfull file to overwrite the original demo program so the game
works correctly. I've had to explain that to a number of people so it's an
understandable if unfortunate circumstance. Why they don't just include
freeware games which can run and install more simply and/or simply explain
the unusual requirement to getting the full version of Superdeakout, I don't
know.

2009-01-04 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Thomas,
Yes, I am able to save Jim Kitchen's games and resume them, and change the
sound settings.

At least with Monopoly 9.
I used the context menu key to pick run as administrator when installing
them but to run them I go to the all programs sub menu , then to the kitchen
item and right arrow to get to the menu program.
For a faster method, I just tried the start menu search edit box, typed in
kitchen,
and kitchen inc games came up and hitting enter on that started the Kitchen
Inc SAPI voiced menu program.

Re: [Audyssey] Pinball classic?

2009-01-04 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Lelia,
Actually, pinball is all about trying to position the ball so you can
hit various bumpers with scores marked on them. Every bumper you hit has
a specific score that adds to your total score. I'm assuming here you
have been blind from birth so have never actually seen a pinball table.
So i'll try to describe it in detail below.
A classic pinball table is a long retangle two maybe three feet long
with a glass top on it which you can look into the machine. On the far
right hand side is a long narrow chamber with a pully thingy on it where
you launch the balls from. In the center of the table is various bumbers
standing up with all kinds of scores on them. The harder a bumper is to
hit with the ball the higher the score marked on it. Similarly the
easiest ones to hit with the ball have low scores marked on them. At the
bottom of the table where you are sitting are two buttons on the table
top that move the flippers. There are two flippers that guard a hole
into wich your ball can get bounced causing you to lose a ball. These
flippers serve two purposes. Besides defending the hole where your ball
can get bounced into you can use them to direct the ball towards the
bumpers thus racking up your score.
How you play the game is you start by launching the ball from the
launcher on the right-hand side of the pinball table. At the beginning
of every pinball game you are given atotal of three balls to start with.
Though, only one ball at a tme can be in play at any given time. You use
the flippers to guard the hole as well as bounce the ball into the
bumpers on the table. Depending on the angle and how hard the flipper
hits the ball you will hopefully send the ball towards one of the
bumpers on the table. When you miss a ball and it falls into the hole at
the end of the table you lose a ball. The object of the game is to get

Now, like classic pinball machines games like PBC allows you to play at
various specially themed pinball tables. You can pick tables like
Pacman, Haunted House, the Wild West, etc.

Can someone tell me some tips on how to play pinball? I looked at the manual and it said to use the shift keys for the flippers and that is what I did.

Hoping all that made sense.

[Audyssey] DanZ Games was Dancing The Klango

2009-01-04 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi all,
If some people would like I can rebuild the DanZ Games setups to just
include the patch as well as add in the Windows Vista Dependancies for
the games.

Cheers!

There's the superdeakout demo file and then you need the sdfull.exe

those files and install them correctly, you get the full game which has
been released as freeware. I suspect somebody may have figured that some
users of Klango may have found it hard to understand that you have to
install the demo first and then use the sdfull file to overwrite the
original demo program so the game works correctly. I've had to explain
that to a number of people so it's an understandable if unfortunate
circumstance. Why they don't just include freeware games which can run
and install more simply and/or simply explain the unusual requirement to
getting the full version of Superdeakout, I don't know.

Hi Lelia,
Actually, pinball is all about trying to position the ball so you can hit
various bumpers with scores marked on them. Every bumper you hit has a
specific score that adds to your total score. I'm assuming here you have
been blind from birth so have never actually seen a pinball table. So i'll
try to describe it in detail below.
A classic pinball table is a long retangle two maybe three feet long with
a glass top on it which you can look into the machine. On the far right
hand side is a long narrow chamber with a pully thingy on it where you
launch the balls from. In the center of the table is various bumbers
standing up with all kinds of scores on them. The harder a bumper is to
hit with the ball the higher the score marked on it. Similarly the easiest
ones to hit with the ball have low scores marked on them. At the bottom of
the table where you are sitting are two buttons on the table top that move
the flippers. There are two flippers that guard a hole into wich your ball
can get bounced causing you to lose a ball. These flippers serve two
purposes. Besides defending the hole where your ball can get bounced into
you can use them to direct the ball towards the bumpers thus racking up
your score.
How you play the game is you start by launching the ball from the launcher
on the right-hand side of the pinball table. At the beginning of every
pinball game you are given atotal of three balls to start with. Though,
only one ball at a tme can be in play at any given time. You use the
flippers to guard the hole as well as bounce the ball into the bumpers on
the table. Depending on the angle and how hard the flipper hits the ball
you will hopefully send the ball towards one of the bumpers on the table.
When you miss a ball and it falls into the hole at the end of the table
you lose a ball. The object of the game is to get the highest score
possible.
Now, like classic pinball machines games like PBC allows you to play at
various specially themed pinball tables. You can pick tables like Pacman,
Haunted House, the Wild West, etc.

Re: [Audyssey] Scifi exploration online game?

One game that came out a little while back you might be interested in
reading about is Bioshock. From what I've red, the execution of the story
line isn't too bad, but the concept is really quite an eyebrow raiser.
No need to give a rundown here of it, plenty can be found with good old
google about the game.
If you've ever read Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, you'll know where the seed
for this one came from.
As far as science fiction games go, my favorite was Homeworld, one of
those games that sticks with you a long time after you finish it, and one
with an interesting setup overall.

Hi tim.

Unfortunately, personal circumstances have made writing anything for me
incredibly difficult recently (one reason I'm now doing my phd part
time).

I've been writing poetry, but that's not really in the same order,
though i must admit one very nice chap does want to include some of my
poems in a collection he's looking at putting together for publication.

I am however hopefully sorting things out now, and am actually working on
a fun litle fantasy story at the moment, just to get my hand back in.

I fully intend to get it finishedin the next few days, sinse I really
want to get back to serious writing and this is a nice way to start.

i'd actually appreciate it if people wanted to read it when it's
done, which i'm hoping won't be long at all.

Agreed Tom. A well written standardized dungeon crawl, as in Eamon
can be a fun litle diversion, but for a true exploration setting I
deffinately want more background and detail. I think many writers,
(particularly of pvp heavy grinders), have been very lazy in just
snipping superficial elements from tolkeen without actually writing any
propper details of the world's overall plot, how the adventure figures
into things, or what races actually are.

Once again though Sryth, Arborell (where there's even an entire
gamebook, and upcoming series playing as a non human race), and the
Lone wolf series have all done this very well.

But world building in scifi is something we've just not seen yet.
Strictly speaking, the final fantasy games, - particularly later
entries in the series are actually much closer to scifi than
traditional sf, sinse the world, technology and history is very much
magitech, magic, robots, airshipsand weapons ranging from
firearms through swords to lasers.

this was one reason my first big writing project was a novelization of
the Ps1 rpg Xenogears, that I found the world so intreaguing.

Again though, this is a style of world and game we've just not seen
done in text, other than a few hints in lone wolf.

I'd personally be more in favor of a freshly created world for the game
than using an existing one. Much as I'm a fan of Doctor who, Startrek
etc (and rapidly becoming a bigger fan of the starwars universe), imho
discovery of the world itself and it's races is one of the most fun
elements of a game. That's why i love the background entries in Sryth.

On the other hand, in a pre-done world, you do have the fun of
exploring locations such as the jedi temple or ds9 yourself, with your
own character, rather than just having to sit back and watch or read
about them.

Personally, if it was me I'd be more in favour of a unique game
world, but again, i'm not the one doing the programming, and it's
just a difference of style I think.

Btw, i am at the moment planning a gamebook for the june Arborell
competition. I have a section plan, plopt and unique setting myself
fixed, and it's only necessary now to write in the actual adventure
pages (which to me is the fun bit), which will probably be my
contribution to world building games I think.

application using klango which has a huge variety of features, from forums,
blogging, quick access to online shopping, to several audiogames which may
be run directly from the program itself, a very nice media catalogue and
player with both streaming, and download capabilities (my personal favourite
bit of the application), to even a basic recording program.

More features are added on a very regular basis. The most recent updates
have been to the social side of things with text chatting and the creation
of specific forums which may be read via the Klango player, but this is by
no means the be all and end all of the application.

 Hi all,
I went to the klango site and poked around a bit. I still don't understand
exactly what it is. Is this a social gathering site with software for
voice chat, or something else entirely?

And how are they implementing games there?
Thanks

Re: [Audyssey] Scifi exploration online game?

2009-01-04 Thread dark

Hi Che, I'll check out bioshock.

out of interest, what exactly is the Homeworld game you mention? a text game
you mention? I'm always up for a good scifi game even if it isn't precisely
what I'm looking for, I'll certainly have fun figuring it out and exploring
all the options, assuming of course the game is in a playable medium.

I am however hopefully sorting things out now, and am actually working
on a fun litle fantasy story at the moment, just to get my hand back in.

I fully intend to get it finishedin the next few days, sinse I really
want to get back to serious writing and this is a nice way to start.

i'd actually appreciate it if people wanted to read it when it's
done, which i'm hoping won't be long at all.

Agreed Tom. A well written standardized dungeon crawl, as in
Eamon can be a fun litle diversion, but for a true exploration setting
I deffinately want more background and detail. I think many writers,
(particularly of pvp heavy grinders), have been very lazy in just
snipping superficial elements from tolkeen without actually writing
any propper details of the world's overall plot, how the adventure
figures into things, or what races actually are.

I'd personally be more in favor of a freshly created world for the
game than using an existing one. Much as I'm a fan of Doctor who,
Startrek etc (and rapidly becoming a bigger fan of the starwars
universe), imho discovery of the world itself and it's races is one of
the most fun elements of a game. That's why i love the background
entries in Sryth.

On the other hand, in a pre-done world, you do have the fun of
exploring locations such as the jedi temple or ds9 yourself, with your
own character, rather than just having to sit back and watch or read
about them.

Personally, if it was me I'd be more in favour of a unique game
world, but again, i'm not the one doing the programming, and
it's just a difference of style I think.

Btw, i am at the moment

That probably wouldn't be too in theme with the traditional-style setup, but
perhaps he'll put in magical bandages that can reattach severed limbs, or a
spell to allow mages to create phantom limbs. Who knows?

Perhaps each job should be allowed to have limited magical ability, to heal
wounds and reattach limbs even if nothing else.

Yes, the first fights are rough because you start with no equipment.
 That'll
change in the next build. Losing limbs should probably be more traumatic
than it is, and there needs to be a way to reattach them without a
 healer.
I'll try to address that too. The next version will have a lot more to
 content with in battles.

Also, could you make a potion to reattach broken limbs? The healers

2009-01-04 Thread Jason Allen
Hi,

Yes, I recognize the need for some kind of reattachment. Or maybe make
losing them more difficult. Phantom limbs or regrowing limbs are
possibilities. I'm thinking about making a pod cast regarding Entombed
because I really haven't properly introduced the game or my goals when
creating it. Maybe I can get something together this week.

Hi,
definitely the JL1 to JL3 maps, as they were the first multiplayer maps
created by the author himself, they are the simplest and smallest ones and
everyone had to grow up on them when the game was first launched. Only later
were those dozens of custom maps created.
