Re: [Audyssey] MOTA

2009-02-01 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Thomas,

You know in the IDE of the VB6 part of Visual Studio besides the auto complete
there is also that it will instantly inform you of many little programming
errors. You know like a missing parentheses etc. And then there is the
integrated help system. You know, just press the f1 key to get the syntax, an
example etc of the command that you are having trouble with.

You know every since I started programming in Basic back in 1980, I have always
programmed in the IDE. The main reason for me is that like in VB6 I type in a
couple of lines of code and press the f5 key to run the program and test the
new lines of code. I just would not be happy typing in a bunch of lines of
code in Note Pad or whatever, then running a command line compiler and coming
up with errors and going what, where, why.

Any who programming in the IDE has always worked well for me.

Hi Thomas,

Thank you for sharing with me what works for you on your computers.

You know I have been running one computer or another since 1980. I have never
had a virus, never had a hard drive crash, never had to redo a hard drive, I
almost never have to reboot either of the computers that I am running currently
and the only time that I have had to use the XP roll back feature has been
after I have up dated a windows component. So I may not run my computers the
same way that you do, but what I do seems to work pretty darn well for me.

Thanks again.

2009-02-01 Thread Jason Allen
Hi Jim,

In all fairness, hard drive crashes are hardware errors. The fact that you
haven't had one is probably just statistical luck. Out of the box XP (or any
Windows in recent memory) is far worse stability wise than a fully updated
one. That said, I completely agree with if it isn't broke, don't fix it.

2009-02-01 Thread Trouble
took all the upgrades, even upped my hardware devices. because the
more stable the box can be the better it runs. had a few viruses and
dealt with them no biggy.

however, to do this stuff you have to be on the web for more then just email.
Would like to see if someone can get your games running on windows 7.
That would be interesting to see what is supported there.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA

2009-02-01 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Jim,
This is one of those cases of personal preference. That constant
debugging of my code drives me absolutely up the wall. Especially, when
I start typing some code and Window Eyes decides to start announcing
every status message that comes up in the error child window. That
distracts me, and I can't get anything done. I'd rather just write it,
compile it, and let the debugger tell me what lines of code need fixing.
Then again, this is probably in the way I learned to program. In college
for my C++ course we used Unix systems, and I used a modified version of
Linux with speakup to do the course work. We just used an ordinary text
editor and the gcc command line compiler. That isn't anything as near as
fancy as Visual C++, but I learned to do without all of the features of
Visual Studio early on. As a result when I was introduced to them I
didn't like them, but many of my class mates loved them.

Smile.

Re: [Audyssey] Rail Racing for speed junkies. was:Re: Would you pay$50for a killer controller?

2009-02-01 Thread shaun everiss
I have done all the vista upgrades within reason.
I have futureproofed 2 computers, one is a hybrid that can run either vista or
xp if chosen to.
Another desktop is updated with the hardware at least.
the main system is broken but I will be gutting it, reformatting it and
upgrading the hardware for this transition.
my digital recorder is updated, my scanner is not because i don't use it much.
Eventually after all the printers die I'd like to get a single network
printer/scanner unit to run of the main router.
On that note the router is updated with wireless.
So as you can see hardware wise I am all ready.
I am using semi uptodate software to.
The only reason I don't jump right in are the screenreader prices.
I am not willing to upgrade a thing I don't use to the fullest anyway.
The hardware cost me about 2000 over the last 3 years, and I was able to buy
that in pieces.
the desktop and router were last year, about 700 so was the recorder making
itabout 900.
the year before that, was the laptop, about 1400.
This next upgrade is another grand for the hardware etc for the new system, I
also am planning to reformat the 160gb drive and have this as a system drive
and have a data drive about 320gb in the box as a second data device.
Now that should all be good.
My next jump will be when well I don't know when.
I have an older system that although semi broke I could get to run for a bit
longer if needed.
Its unlikely if I'd upgrade even then if both systems died.
would be a real bager but I'd get a copy of xp from ebay or something and run
from a desktop if I had to.
who knows though.
The major obsticle to upgrading anything over what I have done is cash, so if I
say got into a propper job I could actually get lagit coppies of some of my
software, mainly office, maybe upgrade the screenreaders to their full versions
for the new systems or at least one system.
But then who knows.
Most of the lagit stuff was given to me, I couldn't afford most of this myself.

Would like to see if someone can get your games running on windows 7. That

Hi Thomas,

Thank you for sharing with me what works for you on your computers.

You know I have been running one computer or another since 1980. I have
never had a virus, never had a hard drive crash, never had to redo a hard
drive, I almost never have to reboot either of the computers that I am
running currently and the only time that I have had to use the XP roll back
feature has been after I have up dated a windows component. So I may not run
my computers the same way that you do, but what I do seems to work pretty
darn well for me.

Thanks again.

Yah, I agree with Thomas here. .net framework 1.1 and 2.0 have been around
the block several times and I wouldn't regard it the latest and greatest of
anything, but rather a proven and totally stable piece of architecture that
allows you to do more with your computer than you can without it.
I agree with the if it ain't broke philosophy to a point, but eventually
you get to a point where you are limiting yourself and your own
possibilities, both for fun and maybe work in this case.
Take the steering wheel for example. Wasn't there a possibility of it
screwing up your system when you installed the drivers? Sure, but a
possibility so minimal it was hardly worth considering. Same goes for .net
frameword and direct x, which are both just extensions of windows.
I'm not trying to convert you either Jim man, but I don't want folks on
list here to get the idea that installing .net frameworks or updating direct
x is a potential system riskof any significance, because that simply isn't
the case, and almost all game developers on here need folks to be
comfortable with those installs and updates.

Later,

Try removable media, such as flash drives, cd-roms, or an external hard
drive. The old fashioned methods work also: Pen and paper, slate and
stylus, or Braille Writer. If you have a cassette recorder, use that. If
you have a digital recorder, use that.

That should cover everything, unless I missed something...

While it is true that cyberassault is a pure fighting mud, to say that it's
all leveling, exp, and more leveling would be wrong. The mud is getting like
3 new autoquest daily, and the goal is actually mroe on questing than
powerleveling.
There are also areas now that play more heavily on puzzles then straight
combat, although fighting is still the main survival theme.

Re: [Audyssey] Rail Racing for speed junkies. was:Re: Would you pay$50for a killer controller?

2009-02-01 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Jim,
I'm not sure of the exact version of Windows XP you have, but this is
what I have personally noticed. If you take Windows XP, with SP2 already
installed, and don't put a lot of other third-party applications on it
it will run great for a long time. The second you begin adding all kinds
of third-party apps like anti-virus programs, office sweits, games, etc
there is a risk you will break something. For example, MS Sapi 5.
I can't tell you how many times if I left Sapi alone, the stock sapi
voices that come with XP/Vista, it never breaks. If I install some
third-party voice, like Cepstral voices, remove them my Sapi 5 will wind
up broken, and then I have to fix it. That has happened to me a couple
of times, and I've learned there are some voices if you install them,
don't remove them, or Sapi will end up busted afterward.
So I do agree with you to a point that you must be careful what you add,
and what updates you install. On the other hand some updates such as
.NET 2.0 and .NET 3.0 are proven, stable, reliable technologies that
power many new applications for XP, Vista, and Windows 7. Since Windows
Vista the .NET Framework is a core component of the Windows OS, and a
lot of programs for Windows Vista and Windows 7 are built using the .NET
Framework. Even the XBox 360 uses the .NET Framework as well as the
latest Windows Mobile releases. My point being is if you are afraid of
installing the .NET Framework you are likely to miss out on any new
games, word processors, etc that are designed for .NET enabled
computers. I know you love racing, and USA Raceway, a game you might be
interested in, just happens to use .NET Framework 3.5 and DirectX 9.0C
(June 2008.)

Smile.

[Audyssey] Windows 7 gaming was Rail Racing for speed junkies.

2009-02-01 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Trouble,
In many cases that is true. I know when I upgraded one of my Vista
computers to Windows 7 public beta 1 it ran a heck of a lot smoother and
more stable than Windows Vista. Plus they finally fixed there driver
database issues in Windows 7 which is a relief.
As far as getting Jim Kitchens games to run on Windows 7 they seam to be
running just fine. I'm not sure if that is because I ran the upgrade
over Vista or if Windows 7 still has some essential backwards
compatibility support, but they are working on public beta 1 at least.
The newer BSC games that were upgraded to Vista, the GMA Games, etc are
also working. From what I can tell if they work ok on Vista they should
work ok on Windows 7 provided you have the complete VB 6 libraries
installed, and the older DirectX 8 libraries installed.

Trouble wrote:
took all the upgrades, even upped my hardware devices. because the more
stable the box can be the better it runs. had a few viruses and dealt
with them no biggy.
however, to do this stuff you have to be on the web for more then just
email.
Would like to see if someone can get your games running on windows 7.
That would be interesting to see what is supported there.

At 03:50 AM 2/1/2009, you wrote:

Hi Thomas,

Thank you for sharing with me what works for you on your computers.

You know I have been running one computer or another since 1980. I
have never had a virus, never had a hard drive crash, never had to
redo a hard drive, I almost never have to reboot either of the
computers that I am running currently and the only time that I have
had to use the XP roll back feature has been after I have up dated a
windows component. So I may not run my computers the same way that
you do, but what I do seems to work pretty darn well for me.

Thanks again.

Re: [Audyssey] Creating a Mud was Question for Thomas Ward

Adding to Tom's talk here, you can also try
Vinux (formally Vibuntu

Current version is v1.2, however it uses ubuntu v8.10 as the operating
system.

On 1/31/2009 10:17 AM, Thomas Ward wrote:
 Hi Bill,
Well, if you are serious about creating a mud server from scratch, and
wish to do it right, that is a pretty big undertaking. I don't want
to be discurraging, but it is a rather big project. At any rate here
is my take for a project like that.
First, you need to get the proper software, tools, and environment to
build your mud server. For games like mud servers I absolutely,
totally, recommend using a dedicated Linux based computer to host the
mud. The most accessible, blind friendly, Linux os out there is Ubuntu
8.10. You can download the cd for free from
 http://www.ubuntu.com
and they have a getting started wiki on sight. Also check out the Orca
 wiki on
 http://live.gnome.org/Orca
which has getting started information for new blind Linux users new to
Linux screen readers, magnification, etc. There are howto docs on
there how to install Linux with speech and so on. Plus the Orca list
 is another great resource.
If you were absolutely dead set on using Windows for your mud server
it can be done using a Unix ssubsystem such as Cigwin on Windows
Server 2003 or 2008, but it is not recommended. There are a lot of
reasons why I personally say go the hole hog and put Linux on an extra
PC you might have laying around to act as your mud server platform. So
why use Linux instead of Windows?

 1. Linux is more reliable - Windows based servers tend to crash or
freeze more often than Linux installations,
that generally run for weeks if not months without needing a reboot.
 2. You can install and upgrade new software applications without the
you need to restart the computer to complete
the installation hastle Windows always gives you when installing
software. That of course results in down time for a mud on Windows.
 3. Better proformence - the same program, running on the same hardware
 (dual-boot) will tend to
run faster under Linux than under Windows. Especially, when comparing
a Ubuntu Linux server vs Windows Server 2008.
 4. Much better networking with multi-user support - Windows Server
2003/2008 servers tend to slow down quite a bit when you hit about 100
simultaneous connections. By contrast, Ubuntu Linux is geared up to
handle many connections at the same time, that is why most web
servers and mud servers are Linux, not Windows based.
 5. Free software - things you need like the C++ compiler, SQL server,
 web server, and many other
software applications are free under Linux. Since the entire operating
system, screen reader and all, is free it will save you money and will
cost you nothing but your electric bill to run your mud server.
 6. More support - stuff like the startup scripts out there are
 geared to a Linux installation.
 7. Better tools - installing snippets is easier with patch and
 diff which work best
under Unix (again, they work OK under Cygwin too).
 8. Viruses and worms - you know most PCs these days are Windows PCs,
 and that is exactly
what the worm/virus/trojan horse writers are targetting. With Linux
 you tend to be
left alone most of the time.
 8. Better firewalling - Linux comes with built-in firewall tools
 (again, I know that
XP/Vista does too) which make it easier to secure your connections.
I don't really want to start an operating system flame war, and I
 use Windows (for
example to develop most of my software and like a lot of aspects of
 it, however for good,
solid, mudding I think it is hard to pass by Linux as the mud server
 platform.

As far as a programming language goes definitely go with C++. Linux is
geared mainly for C/C++ development, and to my knolege must mud
servers are written in C/C++ using the gcc compiler that comes with
most Linux distributions or can be downloaded for free if not. I've
heard of some mud servers written in Java, and I suppose that is ok,
but my vote is for C++. Keep in mind that you will have to get into
some rather advanced topics such as socket programming just to make it
online playable and that isn't the funnest or easiest thing to do in
C++. What you might want to do when starting out is grab a free open
source mud server to practice with, find out how they handled this or
that, and use it for a template for your own server.
 HTH.

  Hi Trouble,
In many cases that is true.

  Trouble wrote:

however, to do this stuff you have to be on the web for more then just
   email.
Would like to see if someone can get your games running on windows 7.
That would be interesting to see what is supported there.

Hi,
That is pretty much what I figured. When I ran the Windos 7 upgrade on
my Vista laptop, which of course had already had games on it, I
discovered everything still worked. I figured it was simply a matter of
installing one of the GMA Games or Jim Kitchen's winkit setup to set
Windows 7 right. Until your message I couldn't confirm this was the
case, because my system already had the libraries installed before doing
the upgrade so it wasn't like a from scratch install of Windows 7 for
me. I'm glad the games still work when you do a from scratch instal of
the os.

Hi,
Smile. We are on the same page. Between the both of us we have pretty
much ruled out any major problems in the future for accessible gaming.
My big fear was when Microsoft announced dropping Visual Basic support
in Windows 7 it was going to be a pain to get games working. As it turns
out as long as you have something like Winkit, one of the GMA Games, it
works fine. Plus Mysteries iof the Ancients is already Windows 7
compatible, because I have already ran it on Windows 7 of course.

 Hi Jim,
Actually I sent you the full version download and a license file, I
checked my records to make sure that was the case, so yer all set for the
full experience.
As for installing .net framework and updating to direct x latest version,
I've sold around 360 copies of rail racer, all those computers must have
.net framework 1.1 and direct x installed, and none of them had any
probems with the components.
The only trouble I've had with any installs were sapi issues where third
party sapi voices weren't playing nice.
the frameworks and direct x stuff are basically extentions of windows, so
the chances of them messing anything up in and of themselves is almost
nil.

Hi Che,

Yes, I remember that you sent me a demo of Rail Racer. Truthfully I have
not tried it. I never installed any net framework on either of my
computers. This one might have it though. So I might have to try
installing the game. I do not up date my computers with the newest
Microsoft stuff because it always has screwed them up and I then have to
turn the computer back to before I did the up date.

 Hi Jim,
I must say if you are into racing games, it is surprising you haven't
registered with rail racer. I offered several game developers on list
here copies of the game, and I remember specifically sending you a free
key way back, in partial payment for all the fun I've had with your
games.
Rail racer isn't a standard racing game in that you must do jumps, avoid
force fields and the like, but the essence of high speed racing is
maintained throughout, as I too am a racing junkie from way back.

Come join us man, you don't know what you're missing.

Hi Che,

Well I paid $100 for a steering wheel joystick. Right now I am very
happy that I did. Mach 1 tts is really fun to drive with the variable
input of the steering wheel, gas peddle and brake peddle. Plus all of
the handy buttons for speaking information. I am just really into car
racing and driving.

Ok though, I would want to know that a game is fully accessible and that
it is a game that I would really be into before I spent $50 for a
controller just for it.

Re: [Audyssey] Entombed Error Message...

2009-02-01 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi,
I am not currently an Entombed player, but I recognize that error from
my own ventures into XNA land. It is do to the fact you are running an
older release of the XNA Framework. Try updating to the latest XNA 3
release and see if that solves your issue.

Cheers.

Thanks all. Problem solved. Yay you all!

This is entirely off-topic, but it's late. If anyone ever wants to
make a game in which a person will have to wield many, many different
weapons either against another or against computers, I would
absolutely love to help. I have a wide experience with many kinds and
would love to see something random like that.

I've got reasonably well up to date. Got a duel core athlon here with a 500
gb hard drive and 4 gb of ram, should be able to kill anything I throw at
it. Its running xp because I hate anything later than that. Other than that,
have a netbook here with an atom processor and 1 gb of ram, etc. I don't
have the latest and greatest but I do perform all windows updates, but I
don't update all my software. I can't find winamp 5.24 which worked the best
for me, I wish I could.

I have done all the vista upgrades within reason.
I have futureproofed 2 computers, one is a hybrid that can run either
vista or xp if chosen to.

Another desktop is updated with the hardware at least.
the main system is broken but I will be gutting it, reformatting it and
upgrading the hardware for this transition.
my digital recorder is updated, my scanner is not because i don't use it
much.

The hardware cost me about 2000 over the last 3 years, and I was able to
buy that in pieces.
the desktop and router were last year, about 700 so was the recorder
making itabout 900.

the year before that, was the laptop, about 1400.
This next upgrade is another grand for the hardware etc for the new
system, I also am planning to reformat the 160gb drive and have this as a
system drive and have a data drive about 320gb in the box as a second data
device.

Now that should all be good.
My next jump will be when well I don't know when.
I have an older system that although semi broke I could get to run for a
bit longer if needed.

Its unlikely if I'd upgrade even then if both systems died.
would be a real bager but I'd get a copy of xp from ebay or something and
run from a desktop if I had to.

who knows though.
The major obsticle to upgrading anything over what I have done is cash, so
if I say got into a propper job I could actually get lagit coppies of some
of my software, mainly office, maybe upgrade the screenreaders to their
full versions for the new systems or at least one system.

But then who knows.
Most of the lagit stuff was given to me, I couldn't afford most of this
myself.

At 02:19 a.m. 2/02/2009, you wrote:
took all the upgrades, even upped my hardware devices. because the more
stable the box can be the better it runs. had a few viruses and dealt with
them no biggy.
however, to do this stuff you have to be on the web for more then just
email.
Would like to see if someone can get your games running on windows 7. That
would be interesting to see what is supported there.

At 03:50 AM 2/1/2009, you wrote:

Hi Thomas,

Thank you for sharing with me what works for you on your computers.

You know I have been running one computer or another since 1980. I have
never had a virus, never had a hard drive crash, never had to redo a hard
drive, I almost never have to reboot either of the computers that I am
running currently and the only time that I have had to use the XP roll
back feature has been after I have up dated a windows component. So I
may not run my computers the same way that you do, but what I do seems to
work pretty darn well for me.

Thanks again.
