2010-11-23 Thread Milos Przic

  Hi Tom,
I was thinking of starting it. I don't have much time, so that's mainly
why I haven't still succeeded in something like that. I started with
interactive fiction, I learned the Inform 7 and then tried the Python. The
documentation confused me, then I started learning the BGT but that also
didn't go, this time because of the little time I had. Then I tried with
Visual Studio 2008 but couldn't find the apropriate documentation. With this
project of yours I think it can be again one of my tries... :)

I am interested for the games, as well as for the book.

Re: [Audyssey] help with answer.

2010-11-23 Thread Shiny protector
Michael, not to sound rude, but have you ever considered looking at the
documentation? Its really freaking me out, and not that, your questions are
driving me nuts, and I'm sure others. Not to offend you, but this question
is pointless in my opinion. Shall I tell you the answer? How many buttons it
says on the documentation or more. And if your looking for the best one,
try the Philips retractible 2909. I mean, ok, I will say what I am saying to
you in a nicer way. Now, yes this list is for gaming, but not to ask obvious
questions. I understand you want to no some things, but you can easily type
on the internet, what is the best flyte controler? The reason I said that
some of your questions seem pointless is because they are extremely obvious
and you don't have to wait for hours, because its all in the documentation.
As I was saying, I no that your curious, but sometimes, you can't say some
things. For an example. I like Thomas's games. Lets say if I was on a
sighted forom. Some mate made a game, then I said, I don't like your game,
go where you want to go. I can't say that. Just remember this fraze. Think
about what you are saying. For an example, Hello, I can't land, any tips? I
will be glad to answer questions like that. Sorry if this sounds rude to
you, and to the other list members, but I hope you understand. Also, I no
your inttention is not to annoy people, its to ask questions. Just ask
really hard questions, not simple questions. I believe that their is
something in the documentation consourning a flyte controller.

Re: [Audyssey] Free Python Sample Games

2010-11-23 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Milos,

Well, the book isn't ready yet, but some of the sample games are. For
example, some sample games I have completed is Guess the Number,
Blackjack, and Number Stumper. All very simple games from a
programming standpoint. In addition to that I have some games in the
works like Oregon Trail and Dungeon which I am porting from Apple
Basic to Python 2.6. Both are favorite text adventures from my
childhood.

So give me a couple of days to write the documentation for the games,
and I'll start uploading them to the website. It shouldn't take to
long to write up a readme file for each game. Although, with
Thanksgiving coming up I might not get to it until the weekend.

As for the Python docs I understand. While they are free and pretty in
depth the problem I found with them is the authors don't give
realistic examples. If someone wants to show off the Python random
class, for example, a simple Guess the Number game does more to show
off the use of the randrange() function than selecting from a list of
fruits as it gives the person something to actually play with that is
entertaining while teaching him/her valuable lessons in Python
programming.

Cheers!

didn't go, this time because of the little time I had. Then I tried with
Visual Studio 2008 but couldn't find the apropriate documentation. With this

I am interested for the games, as well as for the book.

Re: [Audyssey] Free Python Sample Games

2010-11-23 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Bryan,

Oh, the formatting isn't too bad once you get use to it. Yeah, you have
to remember to do it, but it is no worse than formatting code in any
other programming language. You can use tabs or you can use spaces to
align text. Personally, I go for spacing as it makes aligning things
easier to remember. For example, the body of a function would be
indented four spaces like this.

def hello_world():
print Hello world!\n
#End function

As you can see here the print statement is indented four spaces where
the function definition itself is not indented. This is actually
pretty par for any programming language, and I guess I have been
programming so long now indenting code by four spaces is, well, like
second nature to me. I'd imagine after you get use to it indenting
code will become that wway for you too.

Cheers!

Hi,

Yes. All games come in source code format. In fact, none of them have
been compiled, because with Python programs you don't actually have to
compile them. You can just run them in the Python interpreter like
python blackjack.py
and run it from raw source. No compiling etc necessary. The advantage
of leaving them in source format like that rather than building an
executable using py2exe is that the same game can be run on Mac,
Linux, Windows, FreeBSD, Solaris, your Apple IPhone, etc as is. I'd
imagine the games might even run on the Braille Plus notetakers since
they have Python built into the notetaker.

2010-11-23 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

I haven't had a chance to upload the games yet. I'm looking at
uploading sometime this weekend after the holiday stuff settles down.
They'll be on my free games page.

As far as the Python interpreter goes you can download a copy for your
platform from
http://www.python.org
and the current stable release is Python 2.7. Although, I am still
using 2.6 do to the fact a number of Python modules such as PyGame
haven't been updated for 2.7 yet.

As far as accessibility goes it is a simple commandline program. If
your screen reader can handle the Windows command prompt then python
is accessible. Just run a command like
c:\python26\python blackjack.py
to run a game like Blackjack from raw source, or associate *.py files
with python.exe in Windows Explorer to run them by clicking on them.

Hi,

No. As I have said before these are, simple, text based games, written
for the purpose of getting new programmers into programming console
based games using standard input and output via print and raw_input.
Things like PyGame which is required for event driven input, sounds,
music, flashy graphics, is not for a beginning programmer. Mind you it
is not hard but it is a lot more involved and you can't learn to
program by trying to create Shades of Doom or Troopenum on your first
day of class. The purpose here is to start simply and work our way up
to the live action games with all the bells and wistles we want.

Smile.
