Hi Clement, I never gave that a thought, but see what you mean about the differences in voice acting. I'm listening to the English version as I write this, but have to agree, the Japanese acting is much better. Still, it's interesting to compare what both sound like. Thanks. I don't think there's one. Re: [Audyssey] soul calibur iv playthrough
Well, it all comes down to preference. Generally, when I get a game, if there's any rellevant dialog I'll run through it with the english acting first.. then switch it to the japanese once I get it down well enough not to need every word to understand what's happening. Aside from being easier on the ears, it's a chance to practice what little japanese I know. This is why games that have no english voice track can be a good thing and a bad thing at the same time... on the one hand, you get to immerse yourself in the game and its atmosphere and enjoy the japanese acting and how good it is... but if you're blind, you can't read subtitles therefore can't tell what's happening. The opposite is said for games ported over from japan that have the english dub... but no original voice track option. You can understand what's going on, all be it with sometimes very very bad dialog, but you miss the atmosphere and emotion conveyed by the original voice cast. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Hi Shaun, Actually, I have or had something in the works that might help in this respect. For the last few months or so I've been working on a general tech magazine tentatively called Beyond Sight that talks about screen readers, OCR programs, accessible games, anything else VI tech related. I've been busy with MOTA and my personal life so haven't gotten it launched, but when I do actually launch this magazine it will be far more interesting than Audyssey in my opinion because it gathers tech news from a variety of sources and compiles a list of the hottest new software for the VI comunity. Since I'm interested in more than just Windows software I intend to cover Mac, Linux, Windows, IPhones, etc equally. However, like Audyssey the comunity will be able to write reviews, articles, etc about some new game or piece of software that has become available. I think the last one could have been april, joon, or july or august. The big issue with the mag though is that most of it has already happened. We are reading audyssey right now, its mostly from this list so unless we can get more articles or something for the mag the way its going its not really much. Maybe someone should take over or help who has more time, I have a lot of time, I would eventually have to have some donations for bandwidth and such but I am free time wize if I can be of use. Especially over the holodays. I am usually not that bussy and to be honest enjoy helping out in breaks. Though I think we would have to switch to another format, txt is fine but a podcast could be cool I have no easy or rather expensive equipment way to do this but I can if you wish. Stringing a few things for the mag would rock. if I could get a perminant site and or some cash to pay for big dropboxes or some ftp space I may just concider doing this. Ofcause it would mean that every article people did would have to be in audio else I'd have to render it so maybe we could have a companion to the text. THe issue is now we are so iregular, having things only 4 times a year or less that by the time we get the next one I have forgotten what the last one was. Usually I read the news and articles, but skim over about 90% of the mag these days. it used to be that I'd read about most of the stuff. I do tech stuff to who knows. Re: [Audyssey] Accessibility Article
interesting artical indeed, and I certainly see the logic. In fact I was recently presented with an example of this when I read the user guide for Core exiles on mining which (being written before some access info was added to the game), tells players to click the mine icon, it looks like a red square with a pick coming out where as now, there is an icon clearly labled mine asteroid with text. To that extent I agree, adaptation can lead to interesting ideas. However, there are circumstances where the opposite is true. i'm thinking here particularly of the wii. The wiimote is regarded by many people as a great access aide for menue navigation, afterall, someone with problems pressing buttons or moving joysticks is much better off pointing the wiimote at the screen. yet, from a visual imparement point of view, it's a pain in the rear! In fact, it's the chief reason i've not bought a Wii myself (that and the white background for the menues). Now, if Nintendo offered a conventional press to move type menue interface as an alternative, who else would it bennifit besides myself? would that group make a large enough demographic to warrent nintendo spending the time, especially when taking into account both the normal wii menue users and those with motor imparements who found the facility useful. I did in fact get comments to this effect, that I was being unfair to physically impared gamers when discussing this matter on the retroremakes forum. what about eye tracking or voice control. Great for people with certain disabilities, and probably helpful to the general population, but not for specific other groups. I'm not saying I disagree with the point of the artical, in fact I think it's a most intreaguing one, only that because capitalism is an essentially amoral process, appealing to capitalism in the form of inervation may have it's down side too. Then again, as slightly left wing I do freely admit i am suspicious of commercial moativations generally. Btw, this actually makes me think of an idea I've had for a while. Often, i bang Hal on reading something, then go and do something else such as cooking, sorting laundry, washing up etc (in fact this is why i dislike hoovering so much, sinse it's too noisy to read or listen to anything while doing it). I've often wondered for a while if people with perfectly normal vision would find a basic program to read aloud a page of text or a webpage useful for similar reasons, though of course the down side would be that they'd probably not have a decent voice to do it in. Stil, it might be a nice litle project to have people more aware of what working with a screen reader is like, as well as provide a useful functiong which is currently only (as far as I know), available via a screen reader. A Basic game engine contains a high level wrapper for things like input, sound, music, vidio, speech, etc and then offers it to the developer via a scripting language like Lua or can be included directly into a C/C++ project. Esentially this is exactly what BGT does. BGT is a fully qualified game engine, and takes the drudge work out of handling DirectInput, DirectSound, Sapi, the Win32 API, etc on your own. Instead Philip has wrapped all those components into a common interface and has provided a scripting language, Angelscript, to interface with the core engine. Although, there is a lot of programming to be done to create a game with BGT it saves you weeks, perhaps months, of time creating an input, sound, and speech core. With BGT it is already there and ready to go meaning you can start directly on the game without all the truly drudge work of creating an engine in the first place. This is exactly how commercial game engines work too. Smile. On 12/22/10, Tom Randall kf6...@comcast.net wrote: Hi everyone, The closest thing you can get to no programming is to use an all out game creation engine such as the GMA engine, Justin Daubenmire and I looked at this a few years back to see if it would meet our needs. Even with something like this though that basically does a lot of the work for you if you want to do anything much you still have to do quite a bit of scripting after you create the basic game levels and put all the objects where you want them to be at least from my limited understanding of how the thing works. If you are really wanting to make games, as has been said on here many times the best thing is to start learning whatever scripting language or programming language you decide to, for getting up and going with as minimal an amount of work and study as possible I'd say the bgt engine is probably your best bet. Just start with some real simple projects at first so you don't get frustrated and give up, don't sit down and try to write your own World of Warcraft on your first try. I am sure that all this is true for mainstream developers as well I know for a fact that they've got tools that do a lot of the drudge work for you, the basic creating of game levels, putting characters and objects where you want them, I am sure they don't hack this stuff out by hand the way we have to, but I guarantee let's say with a game like super streetfighter iv there is some serious programming or scripting that somebody has to do to make that game happen. Best of luck to you, I've considered getting into bgt myself but simply don't have the time/energy to put into it right now. In this case with BGT games are scripted which gives you the flexability of a programming language while at the same time effectively reducing the skill needed to get things like audio, input, speech, etc up and running quickly. maybe once I have my new site up I will upload the 5gb I have but we will see. I will need to shove each load into folders and well put it up. bandwidth caps are another issue. I probably can't shove 5gb up at least not all at once. At 05:37 p.m. 24/12/2010, you wrote: Hi, I recall there used to be a game play section, with a few audio recordings on it. [Audyssey] Re-discovering BSC Games...
Hi All, Just recently I have been, if you will, rediscoverind BSC's titles. I've gone through both Troopanums a number of times, and just went through Hunter; I guess I wasn't as rusty as I thought. Final score on Easy difficulty: 44368. Anyone have a score that can beat that? [Audyssey] soul calibur introduction
So without getting too deep into it, I notice that noone's been commenting on Soul Calibur gameplay, I'm going to give a very brief, very short intro to this series... Soul calibur is a 3d fighting series from namco... and the head honcho of weapons-based fighters. I won't go into the plot too much, but the gameplay is some of the deepest I've ever scene in a fighter. Controls aren't too hard. there are horrizontal and vertical slash buttons, a button for guard, and a button for kick. This, and the eight-way run system form the core of the game. Eight way run is where you can hold litterally any direction on the dpad, including up+back, up+forward, etc, and run in that direction whereas in most 3d fighters you can only sidestep in addition to moving forward and back. Each character has different attacks for their weapons, but very few would be considered special or super moves. There are no flashy 15 hit projectiles, nothing of that sort. Instead, the supernatural things are very limitted to short, flashy moves that should only be used in certain situations. Otherwise, different commands will give different slashes, thursts and cuts depending on the weapon of the character. Commands in soul calibur dispense with the fireball and dragon punch motions of Street Fighter. Simply holding back and pressing the vertical slash button will produce a different move than say holding down and forward simultaniously and pressing the same button. Combos in this game aren't huge.. it's more about figuring out what strikes will connect after others to form strings of attacks that the opponent can't blocked rather than complicated button inputs. As a result, this game generally has mostly 2 to 3 hit combos, the maximum hits being 5 that I've scene. Well, there's a very, very basic explanation... for all the fighting game enthusiasts, if you have any more questions just post to the list. Or if you're just someone who wants to hear more about this system, feel free to do the same and I'll answer any questions. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] You don't know Jack demo
Hey all, Just in case anyone wonders what the new YDKJ game will sound like... http://twaud.io/qT77 Well, the demo is basically classic Jack with updated questions of course like the Twilight one and Boston Market. Not sure how to get the keyboard to work with it though, and I was trying to get it to work, that's why the various freezes in the recording.
