Re: [Audyssey] wrestling games

2011-04-10 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Thomas,

Other than web based, I do not know of a single blind accessible game that puts
text on the screen that gets read automatically by all windows screen readers.
It has never worked that way. That is why we have always used recorded speech
and or sapi5.

BFN

- Original Message -
Hi Jim,

Yeah, the basic idea I had for this wrestling game is to create a
text-based game similar to Piledriver or Wrestling League Manager
accept I could add sounds, music, and/or create a better A.I. etc for
the wrestlers. Make the matches more realistic by tailoring the moves
to a wrestlers specific style of wrestling rather than a generic A.I.
for all wrestlers.

Of course, I could make it self-voicing too, add SAPI support, etc,
but I kind of find that unnecessary. The main reason is, and this
could be screen reader specific, but with Window-Eyes assoon as the
text changes on screen it reads everything automatically. That's why I
don't have really a problem with Frotz, Scare, etc for playing text
adventures. It reads everything as soon as the screen changes and I
don't really have to review the screen unless I missed something or
want to check a spelling etc.

Naturally, if this is an issue with screen readers like Jaws not
properly reading the text prompts I could use SAPI etc, but I hate the
idea of having to depend on any Windows specific technology like that.
The more dependencies I add the more code I have to remove and rewrite
for a non-Windows port. That doubles the time and effort involved.
Which brings me to another point you brought up in your message.

The main reason I currently don't have a Linux/Mac OS port of
Mysteries of the Ancients has to do with the API I was using during
beta 14/15. It appears that SFML has a bug in how it handles Windows
display drivers causing the API to blue screen and crash on certain
Windows PCS. So far the problem doesn't apply to Linux or Mac OS based
PCS. Obviously, for a stable comercial project SFML wouldn't work for
a game like MOTA.

There is an alternative API, which I eventually will be using, called
LibSDL. SDL doesn't have any problems with display drivers on Mac,
Linux, or Windows, and has decent keyboard and mouse input. The
joystick input is not quite up to DirectX quality so that's a
disadvantage for software developers. Although, SDL comes with an
audio API SDL Mixer I think I'd rather pair SDL with something like
FMOD or OpenAL which has superior 3d audio support, more DSP effects,
and things like that. Since all of this would take time I decided to
roll back to an older version of the engine, one using DirectX, and
release MOTA as is and wait for the rewrite of the cross-platform
engine. So that's why I have had problems with cross-platform
development.

However, with our wrestling game none of this has to be an issue. I
wasn't really planning on using SDL, DirectX, SFML, etc and simply
rely on simple input/output methods that every operating system uses.
Creating a simple input system such as pressing b for body slam or v
for virticle suplex is easy enough to do without resorting to low
level event driven input such as DirectInput or LibSDL provides. Of
course, if we are thinking something more than a text based game,
something a little more modern with speech, sounds, music, etc then it
would probably be better just to use SDL from the start.

As far as it being mainstream I wasn't saying i wanted to be
mainstream. I was merely pointing out that if I created it as a
text-based game some mainstream gamers might play it. True it isn't as
fantastic as WWE Raw VS Smackdown for the XBox etc but you never know
who might stumble across it and play it. My point simply was that text
games still have followers in some mainstream markets, and by writing
it as text it might apeal to that market.

Re: [Audyssey] wrestling games

2011-04-10 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Thomas,

A similar thing happened to me. Many years ago I quit smoking. Apparently my blood
pressure went through the roof. My aorta tried to explode. It came darn close to
doing so. I did get a life flight helicopter ride to Cleveland. And I now take
eleven blood pressure pills every day. Two other times in my life I made healthy
changes and they both backfired. Both ended up in hospital stays and medications.
No more healthy changes for me. I don't think that my health can take it.

BFN

- Original Message -
Hi Jim,

Yeah, tell me about it. I think for me personally I'll never forget
the day Owen Hart died. I was watching it live when he fell 78 feet
from the roof to the ring below because the harness and buckles
weren't tight enough on his flying entrance for the intercontinental
match. He came down pretty hard, and I was sitting in my dad's living
room watching it when it happened. Well, listening more like as my
vision was pretty much gone then, but still it was pretty shocking
sitting there listening to this event on pay per view as it unfolded.
Then, before the program was over they announced that Owen Hart was
pronounced dead on arival at the hospital. He was only 34 years old
when he died. That's pretty young yet.

Another tragic death in my opinion was the death of Hawk. Throughout
the 80's and 90's I guess he had a serious drug habbit, messed around
with a lot of women, etc and was really heading for an early death
when he finally cleaned his life up. He went through rehab, got
married, started going to church, and the next thing you know he just
passed away in his sleep. I think it is really sad that the guy lived
such a messed up life, only to clean up his act, and then died just
when he was really getting his act together. Doesn't seem quite fair
does it?

Re: [Audyssey] tarzan junior7.0 and snowball woar

2011-04-10 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,

Oh, I wouldn't necessarily say that. I think most of us have a good
idea of what has been abandoned, because the developers themselves
made it known before dropping them. We have Jason from XL Studios who
just basically quit out of the blue and turned all of his games like
Giftenum, Danger City, Self-Destruct, etc over to Damien. So in that
sence they are abandoned, but Damien has mentioned he will be taking
them over. We have all the PB Games which we definitely know are
abandoned because Philip no longer offers them for download, does not
offer support for them, and has regularly said so. The DanZ Games are
also self-explanitory. Dan posted on his website that he was quitting
and gave cracks for his games and just left it that way without
further explanation. My point is that I think we have a good idea of
what is and has not been abandoned.

Cheers!

Sometimes games that are not abandoned can make it in the archives.
it would be good to have a place to get things easily.

Re: [Audyssey] Regarding Science Invasion

2011-04-10 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Philip,

Yes, I absolutely agree with you and Kelly. That's why it isn't one of
the PB Games titles I host. It is one thing to officially host
something like Tarzan Junior or Dark Destroyer because they are
stable, fully functional games, and I can still play them on Windows 7
without any serious issues. However, Science Invasion is a different
story. Its an incomplete beta, and the few times I tried it I had
issues with it. So I decided then and there not to host it. I didn't
really see any point given that the game was incomplete and was not
exactly finished. Plus the fact the beta was leaked to the public
without your permission makes it just that much more problematic
because what we have is a game that was never suppose to be released
to the public in the first place. Honestly I don't know what is so
great about it that people still want the game knowing that it isn't
finished and is only a beta.

It has been a while sinse I last played through tj, while I've just been

I should've remembered though sinse it's only in tj that you get to swing

Now there's! something which would be fantastic with analogue jumps.

1. He says woo twice.
When he says it the second time hold down the up arrow and tap the right
arrow quickly about 5 times.

2 When the vine is on your left just jump straight up.
You need a patch to register it a link to download has been provided.
As I heard it doesn't work I've provided one on the next line.

Hi Imbar,

Yes, that is what the patch is for. If you get and install the Tarzan
Junior patch it will give you an unlocked copy of the game. Someone
else was having troubles downloading the patch from my site, but I
hope to fix that as soon as possible.

Re: [Audyssey] wrestling games

2011-04-10 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

I see. Well, I know back when I was using Jaws for Windows. This was
perhaps some 10 years ago I could set Jaws to say all and it would
read everything in the command prompt window. I was using something
like frotz and could load up a game like Arthor and it did a decent
job of reading text automatically as long as say all was enabled.
Still I take your point. SAPI and prerecorded speech has given
everyone a truly screen reader independant design that doesn't require
a screen reader at all let alone weather it has good command
prompt/terminal support.

For instance, I myself use a screen reader called Orca on Linux. Most
of the time it does ok with gnome-terminal, something similar to the
Windows command prompt window, and I can run text-based programs in
it. Unfortunately, Orca is sort of hit or miss with these games etc.
You might be using Scare and it will fail to read all of the text on
the screen, and the mouse cursor might not be able to read the text
either. For that reason alone when I play Adrift, Tads, or Inform
based text adventures under Linux I often exit the graphical user
environment all together, log into the shell itself, and use a screen
reader called Speakup that was specifically designed for text-based
programs. While it doesn't necessarily read the text automatically I
can review the screen and see what is going on. So I do understand and
know where you are coming from. From that point of view it would be
nice just to use speech-dispatcher and shoot the speech out to one of
the Cepstral voices, ESpeak, Festival, ATT Mike, etc rather than
fooling with reviewing the screen.

On the other hand what I really wanted to do is write a game like
Piledriver. I.E. just a simple text -based wrestling game. Nothing too
special or complicated which is what we get if we have to include
SAPI, unicode support, and all that other crap that goes with Windows
API programming. Unfortunately, for a C++ programmer you cant just
send an ascii text string like
hello world!
to SAPI 5. Instead the Microsoft Windows API forces you to convert
that text string to unicode, and then you can pass it to the Speak()
function. That's something of a pain which is one reason I haven't
used SAPI in a while. I pretty much have to write my own convert
functions to convert a single word or line of text to and from unicode
complecating the source code. Plus making it totally operating system
specific.

I guess the best thing to do here would be to use something like
Scansoft Tom and just record everything from scratch. Then, I could
use LibSDL, which is totally cross-platform, for sounds, music,
sspeech, and input. I'm already doing this for STFC so there is
nothing barring me from doing this with a wrestling game as well.

Cheers!

On 4/10/11, Jim Kitchen j...@kitchensinc.net wrote:
 Hi Thomas,

Other than web based, I do not know of a single blind accessible game that
puts text on the screen that gets read automatically by all windows screen
readers. It has never worked that way. That is why we have always used
 recorded speech and or sapi5.

science invasion is not complete by any means.
In fact only completed abandonware games should be released.
At 04:42 a.m. 11/04/2011, you wrote:

Personally I don't care if people pass it around, but I don't want it to be
hosted officially anywhere. Any thoughts, Kelly?

Re: [Audyssey] wrestling games

2011-04-10 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Michael,

Michael wrote:

I think it's a blessing. He went to God, and God took him
before he was possibly lost again. Personally, I wouldn't die in a
hospital, if I get the choice.

My reply:

Yeah, you have a point. Some of these super stars have really messed
up lives, and Hawk was really lucky just to die in his sleep while he
was getting his life straightened out. Others weren't so lucky.

For example, in the 1980's there was a female super star named Sherri
Martel. She worked her way steadily through the female devisions of
the AWA and NWA becoming three time women's heavy wait champion for
those companies before landing a job with the WWF. Once she stepped
into the ring with the WWF she won her fourth women's heavy wait
championship, and redubbed her ring name Sinsational Sherri. She'd
hold the WWF women's belt for 15 months before losing it to, then
female rooky, Rockin' Robin. Thing is Sherri Martel was pretty
sinsational in the ring. She had the body of a super model, was
extremely athletic, and that woman could really move when she wanted
to. Her arial moves such as the flying crossbody pin, flying splash,
flying drop kicks, etc were truly something to see. Unquestionably a
talented athlete in her own right. However, like so many super stars
her personal life wasn't so sensational that's for sure. I gather she
was something of a party girl into wild sex, drugs, the usual party
scene. Eventually, it must have caught up to her in the end because
around 2007 there was an announcement on the news and on WWE that
Sharri Martel had been found dead in her home from a major drug over
dose. I can't help but see that as a stupid waist. Granted her
wrestling days were over, as the woman was in her fourties, but she
had worked in the 90's as various ring side managers under the names
Scary Sharri, Queen Sherri, Sister Sherri, and various other heel
rolls the WWF and WCW wanted her to play. She still had many more
years of life left in her, and in fact was going to be hired back to
the WWE to resume her roll as a ring side manager just before her
death. Dumb. Just dumb to kill herself like that accidently or
otherwise.

Cheers!

[Audyssey] Off topic for some lists: Alter Aeon and mush-z

2011-04-10 Thread Oriol Gómez
Greetings,
Many of you might have heard about Alter Aeon, an online text-based
rpg game, also known as multi-user dungeon, mud in short.
AA is an epic fantasy based, multiclass mud with lots of areas,
classes, quests, gold and equipment, and a large community of both
blind and sighted players alike.
For the last three or so years I have been working on a huge sound
pack for alter aeon which works with MushClient, called mush-z. Some
of you might be asking why I chose mush-z instead of vip mud or other
blind clients. The answer is simple. Mush-z allows us to do much
easier complex scripting and in a programming language that I already
know, instead of having to learn vip mud commands. Mush-z also has an
output window, just like vip mud does; so you can review any text on
the screen. It is all explained in the readme file taht comes with
this MushClient distribution.

There are two versions of mush-z. Lite and full. The full version has
all the sounds, which is about 300mb, while the lite version doesn't
have area music or ambience, which cuts it down to 65 megs.
We have an update system, which knows the version that you have and
will notify you of any updates that are available when I post them.

Mush-z comes packaged into an uncompressed inno setup installer. I
decided to leave it uncompressed so you wouldn't get any creepy virus
warnings. If you can't download large files, or for some reason you
can't use inno setup and would rather have a zipped, portable version
of mush-z, please email me at
ogomez.s92{at}gmail.com
replacing the {at} for the @ symbol.

A note of warning. The updater program for mush-z has been written in
the AutoIt scripting language, and some virus vendors might see it as
a worm. I have provided the source to it so you can see by yourselves
it is harmless. If your antivirus reports update.exe as a worm, you
will either have to exclude it from the annalysis list, or ask for
help in game.
Here is a link to the readme file for mush-z, so you can read it while
you download the client. It's an html file that should show up in your
browser.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2142080/mush/readme.html

The links for mush-z are as follows:

Mush-z Lite (65mb)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2142080/mush-z%20lite.exe

Mush-z full (318mb)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2142080/mush-z.exe

Source for update.au3 is here, in autoit script format. This is not
needed to run mush-z.

Heck, I just thought you had to wait a few hours for the potion to work lol.
Thought Tom was going for realism or something.
Also, if you hold down ctrl shift plus an arrow, she jumps traps--no matter
how far away you are when you start doing it. For example, in the very
first room where the fire pit is, you just hold down ctrl shift and, though
you're a good thirty steps away, she just runs and jumps it. You could put
a limit of how many steps she'd have to go b efore the jump routine wouldn't
work, or make her weaker and weaker as she runs, due to oxygen depreivation.
I find I don't even have to listen for fire pits--just keep those buttons
held down and she jumps them no problem. (Of course, sometimes I get a
nasty surprise when she finds something she can't jump over.)

Also, what does the lever in room 15 do? It doesn't seem to make anything
happen. I only ask cuz I'm already on level 2.

Hi Ryan,

As for the first bug thanks for reporting it. Only one person has
reported that bug, and I was hoping someone would confirm this bug. As
I now have confirmation this is an actual bug I'll be looking into it
further for the MOTA upgrade I'm working on now.

As for the second issue I've not had any issues killing enemies.
Although, I can think of two reasons why you might shoot and miss. One
is every weapon has a min and max distance. I.E. if you are too close
or too far away you will fire the weapon but not hit anything at all.
This isn't your ordinary game were simply shooting will hit something.
You litterally have to be standing back away from your target to swing
a sword, fire a gun, etc. This is true to real life, and why it works
that way.

nasty surprise when she finds something she can't jump over.)

This is true to real life, and why it works
 that way.

science invasion is not complete by any means.
In fact only completed abandonware games should be released.

Hi,

Yeah, I'd probably do the same. However, this happened years ago.
Sience Invasion has been floating around the internet for five or six
years. I am not sure why Philip abandoned the game exactly, but it
probably had to do with his decision to stop using Javascript and
switch to C++. I know it was around 2005 or so when he closed PB Games
and started Blastbay Studios with Streemway etc.

 Games we'd Like to play.

Youth Hunter: Mysteries of the Aging.

You Are Angela Carter, an elderly treasure hunter,
willing to risk everything to recover her long lost youth.
Her mission will not be an easy one, for she has waited so long for her

game to be finished. Now she must face many cosmetic procedures, such
as Botox treatments from high charging surgeons, Microdermabrasion, and

pills from Anti-Aging experts to re-gain her youthful appearance.
She must avoid such deadly traps as snake oil salesman , Magic Foot
 Drafts, 3 Dimensional Age Defiance
cellular power infusions, Skin Laser Treatments, deep mud pack facial
 cleansers, and poison Galvanic potions.
Along the way she can start working out on Elliptical Exercise
Equipment, Bowflex TreadClimbers, ancient Nordic Tracks, and the
Stamina Bio Flex 2200 to loose those added pounds she gained while
eating pizza and drinking beer waiting for her game to begin.
If Thomas finishes Angela's game, and she finally makes it to the Hall
of youth she must face her greatest challenge, suffering the effects of

aging for the rest of her natural life.
Which won't be very long due to all those nasty creatures who are
 trying to kill her.

I really don't understand why you guys have so many problems. I've gotten
pretty far in the game, although I haven't beaten it. This is because the
second boss is giving me some problems. he throws fireballs extremely
quickly and it's real hard to destroy him when things speed up. however
the

enemies themselves aren't all that hard if you have patience and don't
rush

things. you also need to apply some strategy to things as well. for
instance the teleporting enemies. you'd think this is a random thing, but
you'd be wrong. they only teleport on specific coordinates. which means
that if you stand at a teleport point, an unlimited amount of enemies can
potentially spawn. you'll kill them, then by simply jumping straight up
and

landing, or just taking a step back then forward, you'll get a bunch more
to appear. to be honest I find this logic rather flawed and broken since
if

you know there are a bunch of enemy spawn points somewhere, you can
simply
use the jump command to cover some distance and prevent the spawning from
triggering. . also remember if enemies teleport all around you and you
have

enough bullets, use your machine gun to destroy them in no time. there's
also the shop, don't forget that. so buy some bullets for the machinegun
there. don't bother buying any of the other items since you'll get them
in
large quantities. in every other case just use the sword. you can swing
it
as fast as you want with no penalties so break the space bar to kill
enemies faster lol

 Subject: Re: [Audyssey] battle zone

 Hi Clement,

Well, I'm not sure how to apply it to Battlezone, but I can think of
many mainstream games were if you get hit once you are dead, but it
might take 25 to 50 hits to kill the enemy. Usually, this works by
jumping bullets, ducking attacks, and other evasive maneuvers until
you kill the enemy. Of course, all of this is based on you being able
to see the attack coming in enough time to effectively move out of the
way fast enough. With Battlezone the problem is there is no warning
the attack is coming so you get killed before you can even begin
thinking about moving out of the way.

 Cheers!

Not possible, if your opponent only takes one hit to kill you and you

that could work around that. And this is assuming your opponent is at
close range.. which means you can't stand far away and riddle him with
 bullets.
