Hi Thomas, Wow, certainly some news to me. About two years ago, Shane Davidson put Giftanum on his own website for download, along with the source code. I downloaded the game and read in the updated documentation that there were still some sound updates to make. I made those sound adjustments for him, repatched the installer, and sent it to Shane. Shane then contacted me, claiming that I had broken the source code. As it happened, I hadn't even touched the source code, and upon checking I found that the code would not run or compile either, claiming files, functions and variables to be missing. Shane then took the game down and informed me that he was no longer interested in developing it. Therefore I went to Jason, asked if I could take over, and he gave me the code for all three games - Self Destruct, Giftanum and Danger City. Since then I have been hosting the originals on my website until I could get the games updated, which I will admit took a lot of time to get to grips with Jason's coding methods. Then of course I start actually updating the thing I am switching languages, so I would have to do a whole rewrite anyway. So much for a wasted half year! *Grin*. Hi Thomas, Well, to be honest everyone starts somewhere. I dread to think if I went back 5 years what my code looked like. Even now I am not very experienced with games programming. Yes I can make the odd utility in VB, but even then I've been having reports left right and centre regarding bugs that I can't seem to replicate. However, learning C++, I am right back to novice state. I feel humiliated to say that so far, after almost a month of trying to learn, I still can't even write a clean hello world program. Probably because of its extensive nature. In VB, I had to write it as a message box simply because I wasn't practising coding by drawing a window and saving an executable. So as you can imagine, writing a 3 liner in a message box to writing an 85 line version creating a window is a large jump. Hi Thomas, Yes, that does look complicated, but then again for the past week I have been struggling with various parts of a C tutorial that was written by a friend of mine. Where in Visual Basic you have strings, booleans, longs, integers, types and classes, in C you have chars, ints, shorts, longs, doubles, floats, pointers, structures and even completely new user defined data types which seem to look more complicated the more I try to understand it. Philip Bennefall has been fantastic and has helped me with various parts of it, but at the moment my brain feels like it has fallen into the fire and turned into a shrivelled burned up piece of paper *smile*. As far as PyGame goes it is a cross-platform Python wrapper for the SDL API that works on Mac OS, Linux, and Windows. While I like the simplicity of PyGame and SDL it still leaves a lot to be desired. SDL only has very generic input device support for keyboards, joysticks, and mice so if you have a specific type of controller with advanced features like force feedback support you are out of luck. SDL_Mixer also has its drawbacks. A lot of features I use in DirectX such as changing the frequency/pitch of the sounds in real time isn't currently available with SDL. SDL_Mixer has a software mixer for doing virtual 3d audio, but it is not as realistic or as good as the hardware mixing you get with an API like OpenAL. As a result PyGame and SDL based games lack features that you could get with better game libraries such as DirectX, OpenAL, FMOD, etc. Which Python doesn't support to my knowledge. So I wouldn't really recommend Python if you wanted to create the next Shades of Doom or Mysteries of the Ancients. When it comes to C# .NET it certainly could be used to create a game like Q9, Mysteries of the Ancients, or Shades of Doom. In fact, Mysteries of the Ancients is currently written in C# .NET. However, it is unfortunately first and foremost a Windows based programming language. Although there is a cross-platform framework called Mono and cross-platform game API called SdlDotNet it is less than a perfect gaming solution. For one thing I've heard that Microsoft is trying to take the Mono project's developers to court over various copyright issues, and who knows how long C# .NET will continue to be supported on Mac OS and Linux. So legal issues would not make C# .NET a great solution right now for cross-platform development in my personal opinion. Even for strict Windows development I've had my fare share of problems with the language. First, Microsoft released a DirectX API for C# .NET, called Managed DirectX, which has a number of bugs and is no longer officially supported by Microsoft. Second, in 2007 Microsoft released an alternative to Managed DirectX called the XNA Framework which has some screen reader accessibility issues. The main accessibility problem is the tool they use for building soundbanks, setting up sound properties, etc isn't accessible for a totally blind user. Third, SdlDotNet has the same general limitations as PyGame. Last, there is the SlimDX API which is pretty good, but their documentation isn't as good as it could be. They often have you look things up in the official Microsoft documentation for C++ which means you need to understand C++ on some level to be able to red and fully understand the docs. There is another sound API, FMODEX, which is really good, but if you use it for commercial games it is quite expensive to license. Bottom line, C# might be a good language to know and use, but it doesn't have a lot of great choices for game programming libraries. There are a few other things about C# .NET you might want to be aware of before you consider using C# .NET for game programming. When you compile a C# .NET or VB .NET application using Visual Studio .NET it converts your source code to something called MSIL, the Microsoft Intermediate Language, which gets read and run by the .NET runtime. As a result your application can easily be hacked and cracked and reverse engineered by a skilled .NET developer. So if you ever decide to create commercial programs you will have to purchase an obfuscation tool to scramble the MSIL code so that only the framework can read it, but if someone tries to reverse engineer the game they get nothing but jumbled garbage in their favorite disassembler. This is just something which occurred to me as I was out clubbing this evening, --- ie, abusing various creatures with Q9's big nasty club! in games, running often served incredibly distinct purposes just beyond the obvious moving faster, so, you could run and then jump to get a longer jump, or use the run move to perform dashing attacks. In many audio games i've seen though, running only moves you forward slightly faster. While 3D games like shades or gma tank commander make this very useful, in side scrollers like Q9, superliam and Mota, I actually find myself playing with the run button perminantly held down, which seems rather odd to say the least. If future side scrollers are going to have run features, instead of just making it a faster walk and effectively having the gamer hold buttons down, how about borrowing one feature from prince of persia, that of sneak step. In prince, you ran perminantly, but by holding down a button you could tap to get single steps, very useful for getting close to the edge of a pit or lining up a jump. Of course, it might just be me, but I would suggest unless developers are going to put in extra features such as running jumps or running attacks, maybe a sneak step held button to slow down would be more helpful than a run button to speed up, at least in side scrollers. The fire is between locations 83 and 87, and 103 and 107. so when the location says 108, of course making sure no weapons are drawn, jump to the left. Hi Thomas, I decided against the .net framework for several reasons. For a start, I could never get to grips with the IDE interface. For a second I always had trouble with .net based interfaces, as screenreaders sometimes cannot recognise the class of the control that is in focus. For example, it might just say OK instead of OK Button. Although this doesn't hold true for games, with them being entirely audio based, there's still the IDE. Then there's the fact that .net software's code can be hacked into unless you use some form of obfuscation. According to a friend who also used vb.net on a temporary basis, there is a piece of software out there that can decompile .net based software. I don't know if that is because of the fact that most of the application is referencing different class objects, but nevertheless I wouldn't want to go down that road if I knew that my software could be hacked. Hi. I thought it more appropriate to start this on a new thread, hence the reason for two messages. X-Sight Interactive is still on the move. Here are some points of interest that will hopefully answer some questions as to why I have been absent from the scene for a while. Website I am working on a new website. With the equipment and resources I have recently purchased, I have expanded my work to a wider range of products than just games. However, as this is a games list I will simply lead the curious minds to www.x-sight-interactive.net, where the latest news can be viewed on the home page. Our new website will reflect this change, as well as various other changes that you may notice, both on the pages, and while downloading. I hope to have the website redone with as little downtime as possible. However, if there is any downtime, it will be between Christmas and new year, as this is when the new site will be online. Blog Anyone who has been following my blog will know that the blog has not been updated for a while. This is because of the difficult interface of the new Wordpress 2.8.1 upgrade, we are planning to downgrade back to 2.7.1, as there were no issues with that version. This will be effective as soon as the website is back online. Software As you may also know, various software projects, including several games, have not been coming in very fast. Although we have been doing extensive development work, I have decided, for personal and technical reasons, to switch development platforms. I am now in the process of learning C++. I have been attempting to do this whilst developing my current projects in VB6, but this is not only delaying my progress, but also making things harder when I'm finally sufficient enough with C++ to convert all the libraries and code that I have written in VB. I hope this is OK and that nobody holds this against me *grin*. Hi Peter, No, I see no real hurry to replace any of my Visual Basic projects until the new C++ versions are ready to be released. The only reason I deleted the AutoIt projects was because they were not designed to be open source software, but due to a major flaw with the introduction of the AutoIt decompilers, the source code is easily hacked into. This was proved to me when certain individuals who shall remain nameless hacked into my registration system, and when questioned they sent me the decompilers, which I tried myself. Annoyingly, they completely bypassed the password protected scripts, decompiled them and gave access to code that should have remained closed. After searching the internet for a fair while, I have learned that nothing can be decompiled from a VB6 project, except the names of the libraries and procedures used. Other than that, the entire code seems to be converted to assembly before compilation. Friends will do anything for each other usually, even if it means being secretive to help another friend. I've seen it in the past. If somebody knows that all they need to do to register is find out somebody's name and key, more people will think they won't need to pay for it. If the key is online or hardware based, at least they can be tracked, and it would be harder, as code cracking techniques would be necessary. Most people wouldn't know how to do that, therefore they are forced to buy it if they want to play it. I would imagine more people would approach friends about keys than they would surfing around on the internet trying to find cracks for hardware based keys. That's just my opinion, but if you feel different, I will change my registration system to suit the needs of my fellow gamers. Since I custom build my desktops it is easy to swap out a motherboard, processor, and memory so one day it might be a 3.0 GHZ system with 1 GB of ram and after I finish performing an upgrade it might be a 3.5 GHZ system with 2 GB of ram. Such upgrades are quite normal for me. However, because a lot of software now uses hardware based registration systems performing an upgrade like that causes me endless frustration and agrivation, because I have to contact every developer, explain to them why my product doesn't work, and ask for new keys. Obviously, this is a massive hassle. Some developers such as BSC Games, GMA Games, etc are pretty friendly about it, know I do this, and are willing to grant me a new key if and when I need them. Some developers, Microsoft to name one big one, tells me I have to purchase a new license for Windows because Windows was designed to be installed on a single computer where the hardware is assumed to be the same without major upgrades. So that naturally effects my desire to keep up to date with upgrades. As a result I've had to make major changes in what software I support, buy, and install on my computers. My desktop runs Linux because it is cheaper, doesn't have some draconian registration system, is easier to maintain, and does just about everything I want it to do. Since I don't upgrade the hardware on my laptop that is the system I install Windows on, plus my games, and have elected to register all of my Windows software on that system. Primary reason is that is the only way to keep from having to e-mail every developer under the sun for a new key anytime I perform a system upgrade on my desktop system. While an internet product activation system isn't that bad still it bars valid users from a clean and simple way to register his/her software. In the end knowing what I know about both the good and bad about registration systems Mysteries of the Ancients uses a user name product key system. That is the product key is tied to the user's user name. It is considered the weakest security system a commercial developer could use, but makes it simple and easy for an honest customer to use. Since I am not primarily writing my games for money, do it more as a side hobby, I tend to use the honors system on such things. I feel customers who really enjoy my work, want to contribute to USA Games for future developments, will pay for the games and legally register them. Those people who lack a conscience or just don't care will pirated it anyway regardless how secure I try to make the registration system. Hi Brian, True. Either way, one side, either the dev or the end user, is going to have a problem. The user's problem is when a developer takes the hardware road, the developer's problem is when they take the name based key root. If the developer takes a name/key approach, then he is losing out, not only on money, but also losing control of what is rightfully his. Let's face it, it is pure breaking copyright laws, but there is nothing a small hobbiest developer can do about it, and that's the frustration from our point of view. However you have all brought up the rather valid point of, not everyone has an internet connection, so an online registration system is not very accessible, and some people, like Tom, are hobbiest fettlers and repairers, etc, in which case the hardware based key isn't a good solution either, and I know what you mean. In the space of two months I have had to email five or six developers for new keys for their products simply because I reformatted my machine. In that light then, what is the best course of action? However, as an end user myself, of such product registration systems, I personally hate them. I generally find the registration system, if not flexible and easy to use, is a major deterrent from purchasing the product. I've actually stopped using certain products just because the registration system was too much of a hassle obtaining new keys for all of the time. For example, I often upgrade my computer if and when I have the cash to do so. Since I custom build my desktops it is easy to swap out a motherboard, processor, and memory so one day it might be a 3.0 GHZ system with 1 GB of ram and after I finish performing an upgrade it might be a 3.5 GHZ system with 2 GB of ram. Such upgrades are quite normal for me. However, because a lot of software now uses hardware based registration systems performing an upgrade like that causes me endless frustration and agrivation, because I have to contact every developer, explain

I switched when it went to jaws 8, I couldn't be bothered to keep shelling out tons of cash for upgrades when since v7, it was just being very problematic on the net. I found myself constently going back to old versions just to keep the programme stable. When you're paying per year £150 as you can see I justified that as being unacceptable. Also it caused my system to slow down no end. It really was problematic. I got wineyes in march 2007 and as you know since then we've only had 1 SMA or paid upgrade. That was v7.0. so in the 2 and or so half years that I've had the programme, I have only used 1 upgrade because I bought v6.0, and I haven't had to pay a penny since. Which I think personally is fantastic. Just goes to show you how fs rip off the customer doesn't it. You get a key, whether name or ID based, it activates online, but you can register it up to how many computers you have available. I always allow up to 3. I am also wondering how the new Super Egg Hunt is coming? Also I have found some possible bugs in Super Egg Hunt and Super Liam. Super Egg Hunt: If you clear your scores, and you do it again, you get a runtime error. Normally you wouldn't want to do that in the first place, but in my case I forgot I had previously done it. Super Liam: When you beat the game, your stats file says you have completed the game with 3 lives and 0 points, rather than the actual number of lives and points it said you had. In other words, the points had obviously been reset before the stats were written. Hi, As I am working on Danger City I am aware of these movement issues and will fix them in the next release, though I can't give an exact date for that yet as I am still attempting to work out what certain functions and variables mean. I played danger city again last night and its really next to impossible. And the bad thing is. Eventually I managed to complete act3 but the bomb still went off. I heard the intro to level2 which does not exist, but at the same time I heard a mine in front of me which means there is a big bug in the game. For those of you who haven't played danger city, level2 is where the character meets an elderly man who is about to tell him how to start his new mission. And the game character is walking in water. And then a car passes. The sound of a land mine is not suppose to be there. Although I like the sound of the land mines its much more difficult to jump over a land mine in ddanger city than it is to jump over obstacles in super liam. And the game gives me enough time to complete the escape levels such as the volcano and water escape. Thus super liam is light years easier and more comfortable than danger city. Well done liam. I find it difficult to track though, since I can't reproduce these errors on my system, and as the TopSpeed team helped me design and test the software, I think they would've told me if they were getting similar issues. I've heard accusations of dumbing down, as I think I've said in a previous mail, I think this is silly. There are more eggs, which means it's more difficult to here what's where, you move slower and thus the chicken, christened by one of my friends Gregory Peck, has more time to get you. In this latest version a bug has been fixed, and my scores are going up nicely accordingly! I also love the fact that the horible hip-hop music which I used to find very aggrivating on Migraine days, has now been replaced by a lovely outdoor background sound. Also the chicken has changed. Different sound, and now this is where you're going to think I'm cracked. i used to find McChicken scary, honest I did. it had a sort of malevolent sound to it, I hated the peck sound, and the way it would suddenly unfreeze and jump out at you after a clock sometimes. Now Gregory you can be annoyed with, cos in this new game, you have to do a fair bit of jinking around to collect the eggs, and moving from the straight line is what attracts his attention. He comes flapping and fussing at you, but he's more cartoony, and I much prefer the new peck sound we have now. I like the fact you can hear him moving, and that if you freeze him he still clucks, so you can hear where he is. He's still wicked fast though, you have to watch him. Ok, new GTR, as I shorten the Great Toy Robbery. First, I didn't realize I was playing anything new. I'd rather hoped to have some updated toy sounds. You find it much easier to pick the toys up though, and there are more, though not berzillions. Where the real change comes is in the elves. I used to find the old elves much easier to deal with than old chicken, and could steal stuff right out from under their stupid pogo sticks. Um, not any more I can't. They're wicked fast and lethal, and hunt in packs, or they have so far on my game. The other change is when dealing with the fat jelly belly bean bag! Now in the old game, when I heard the thunder, I'd breathe a sigh of relief. Now was the time to start poking fun at the lumbering old idiot, if I ran a certain way, he'd never get me. Um, not now. I've got stomped twice. That. never. happened. to me. Ways the games could be improved? two I can think of only. A pause feature would be good. I hate it if I'm playing a real wopper, and the phone goes, or someone messages, and I have to stop and lose a really great score. Next, I don't like the way you can still hear the music when you're not in the game window. It makes sending a quick message between games without closing stuff down like I used to, at least in S E H, impossible really, and it's not necessary, I don't think. Hi, If you go through your numbers, if you hear the correct tone, leave that wheel. Switch to the next wheel and go to any numbers that the other wheel has told you. Example: The number is 7 5 3. You're on your left dial, bearing in mind they are all on one. You cycle through your numbers. You get to 3, and you find that that is one of the numbers by a double beep. You get to five, that is also used. At 6 you still haven't found the correct number for that dial. Therefore you scroll to 7 and leave it, since you know that'll be the number. You switch to your middle dial, and scroll that to 3. You find it gives you a double beep. You then scroll to five, switch dials, scroll to three and press enter, without bothering to check, since that will waste you precious time. HTH. [Audyssey] Anyone having this problem?
Hi, I was just updating my software directory, and downloaded the deluserlex.exe file off Jim Kitchen's website. For some reason AVG seems to think there is a trojan with this file: File name: C:\downloads\Software\deluserlex.exe Threat name: Trojan horse Generic13.SLP Has anyone else had this? Even after redownloading I get the same message. Should it just be ignored? I mean, I know some virus scanners are overcautious and flag some harmless applications for various reasons... [Audyssey] bug in homer on a harley
Hi Jim, As implied in the subject, I've encountered a bug in Homer on a Harley. If you save a game, and restart the program and resume your game, the number of successfully jumped buses counter is reset, so instead of me jumping the 6 buses that I had, I was attempting to jump the 7th bus but successfully jumped 0 by the end of the game. Also, a would you like to play again option would be nice if you update it. Thanks. [Audyssey] patch for chopper challenge
Hi gamers, We've just released a patch for Chopper Challenge. We will be releasing the new update as the full setup shortly. This patch fixes a few game bugs and updates the location of the scoreboards, as the updater had to be moved due to suspected hacking. For those of you who already have Chopper Challenge 1.0, all you need to do is grab the 1.1 patch. Those of you that don't can either download and install the 1.0 version and then the 1.1 patch, or wait for the full 1.1 installer to come, which may be tomorrow. hi guys. i have released a new version of blind man's bluff (1.3) on x-sight-interactive.net, which should allow for the changing of the sapi5 voice. on my system, it won't let me change the voice. i'm wondering whether this is my system or whether it's the way i wrote the code that's causing the problem. could you guys test it out please? and, if you're a vb6 developer, could you have a look at the code please and tell me whether how i'm doing it is correct or not? thanks. There is an item you need to have in your hand when you enter the room with the hidden white key in order to find it. This is true to the original Monty game, and so you need to do some puzzle solving here to locate that missing key. I know everything works and all keys are in the game because I have played Monty from level 1 through the bonus round, and no issues of missing keys. you see i didn't suspect that, and am still a bit confused as to how it can do that, since it asks you to change the value yourself of the memory you want to edit. for example choose the game process search for 3 it'll ask you to change it die search for 2 it'll ask you to change it die search for 1 then it knows you're looking for lives. so i can't see how that helps in changing something in memory that you can't manually change first. but, i've taken your word for it, and it has now been deleted off of my computer. AutoIt source code can easily be decompiled. Look on google for autoit decompiler the first thing that comes up is something which somehow manages to bypass the password-protection/encryption layer of an autoit script and you get the whole source code! That's also why autoit is: a. so slow, because it apparently uses the windows script host, and b. so big, because the compiled .exe consists of the source code and the autoit interpreter, as well as the AutoItSC.bin file. I just wish that I could get to grips with .net, and I wish that Vista wasn't such a huge pain in the backside. If it wasn't for the fact that IE7 is buggy with FTP sites, .net isn't all that accessible, too many restrictions with Vista, including no WaveOutMix, the menus were different, and that some of the games I play everyday can't be played on Vista, I'd probably upgrade now, since I've heard it's got better SAPI voices, better cd writing capabilities, better DVD playing accessibility features, etc, etc. I mean, the fact that you have to be administrator to install things, and not just an administrative user. I think that's going way too far, and the parental control filtering stuff. I never said your suggestions were stupid or childish. I just said that Justin probably wasn't going to update. I also gave you my honest opinion, which was that emails directed at individuals should be emailed to the individual in question, rather than emailing a whole mailing list only to say that a specific part of an email is for Justin only. But my opinion is: if Justin feels that 2 levels in the game shouldn't have any enemies why not make it the first 2 levels. And there is the practice round for those who want to fit pipes without enemies. My reason why I feel there should be enemies in levels 13 and 14, because now it happens that I unlock a toolbox on level 13 or 14 and now I get a bug spray and I would like so much to use this bug spray but now there are not spiders. Ok, you guys will say: but use the bug spray once you received it. NO, I want to use the bug spray as soon as a spider appears. That makes the use of bug spray feel more realistic. Its s bad to receive a special item in a toolbox and I can't use it! I really don't mind if I for example receive a special item in a toolbox in level5 and no enemies appear in level5 which I can kill using that special item because I can use those special items say on level6, but on levels 13 and 14 its bad not to get any enemies. So damion, I am very very unhappy because you jump down my throat regarding my pipe suggestions. I could have e-mailed you privately, but I want the rest of the gaming community to know that I have the innoscent intention of giving Justin my feedback regarding the game and what do I get? A moderator and list members that spank me on the fingers. I was never complaining, I was only giving innoscent feedback. It was said either in the manual or in the list guidelines, the purpose of the bsc gaming list is so that customers can give feedback to improve games. Now I remember, it was definitely said in the guidelines, I can still remember the wording more or less. We prefer that posts should only be on the topic of bsc games because we want feedback from our customers to improve our games. Now that I'm doing it, I get spanked on the fingers for a childish nonsense complaint.I've said it many times damion and I will say it again. I am a happy customer, I never feel that I wasted my money on pipe2, it's an action packed game, and the fact that the special items is randomized, that makes it interesting and that determines my score and that can cause me to get a high score to end up on number1 of the scoreboards. I'm not trying to say that Justin should leave his work that he is busy with now and update pipe with the changes I would like to see in it. I understand if Justin's schedule is full, the only point I want to bring across is, Justin must be assured that I'm valuing his game and I'm giving him feedback. But how sure can I be that damion doesn't privately discourage Justin to give me acknowledgement? At least if I take damion on on this list he can't take list action against me. I don't know how else I can tell people I'm unhappy with the attitude I'm getting. I know people said that they do get enemies in levels 13 and 14, but I am sorry, I can't believe this. Because as a pipe gamer you do not always pay attention to what level you are on. It happened to me in the past that I think I am on level13 because no spiders show up, then I hear a spider at almost the end of the level, and I kill it and I thought: wow! Hi, I am pleased to announce a big change to X-Sight Interactive. We now have our own domain. http://www.x-sight-interactive.net As some of you may or may not have noticed, my email has also changed. Personal emails should now be sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED], and X-Sight queries to [EMAIL PROTECTED] We do also have a sales, although we currently have no need to use this until we actually start selling.
