Re: [Audyssey] Any Soccer games for the blind that are free
Hi Charles, Have you tried The Savage Gambit, I can't find it anywhere and I never tried it properly. What do you think about it? I think that Vipgameszone has the right concept, but the wrong idea of super tennis. For harder levels, instead of multiple balls, just make one ball bounce less, maybe would also be fun to have long lob shots as well, an cool Brit umpire with propper tennis scoring, more realistic sound effects, maybe courts with different surfaces that would play differently, different players you could play against and of course multiplayer. For most of their sports games, it is like this, the interface for me for a sports game is really uninspiring, borring robotic voice, five levels of difficulty, too much of a rulebook rigidity about what you have to do in a certain situation, example with tennis and football when a certain player has the ball you have to do a certain thing, you can't play flexibly. Even though sport for me is the best type of game in the world, somehow I just wasn't really at all too excited about vipgameszones. Super Volleyball was good, but I could even beat it on hard, which is a miracle if you look at my record of games on higher difficulty levels. [Audyssey] Accessible self-defence
Hi all, This might be off-topic, but I just don't know where to ask and it's sort of a question of having fun or entertainment for blind people. I'd like to know are Tai Chi and karate accessible for blind people? I know blindys can do Judo, but what other martial arts courses have any totally blindys done and did any adaptation need to be made considering you were practicing with sighted persons, like did the teacher come round and demonstrate the moves? Re: [Audyssey] Accessible self-defence
Hi Dakotah, Thanks for that, wow you've done a lotin that field. This I think is the main question, because unfortunately there's quite a bit of crime in SA, it would be helpful to learn self-defence, but I know the whole punching and kicking thing is impractical to blind people, but I've always wondered if a person were to try and attack you in real life, what's the best form of doing self-defence fight back. I was wondering this after reading a post about a blind guy who was basically assaulted and slapped, kicked and slapped in the street, when someone's trying to kick you and you don't really know from where they're coming, what's the best SD techniques or form of SD to learn for a blindy in open combat. Re: [Audyssey] speak and spell and speak and math.
Hi Thomas, What would be fun for you to develop for young blind kids is a game I used to play, my mom had to read the screen, but it was called Maths Blaster. There were different Maths puzzles, multiply, add, subtract, divide, rounding off, fractions, etc, but the fun part was also the games. Example, there was one when you answer a sum right, you help a little man build his space ship to fly in, and at the end you'd hear the man walk to the ship and the ship fly away, you'd also get a certificate, gold for perfect answers, less colours for less answers. Then there were other games where, when you answered enough sums you'd run around a board eating doghnuts not trying to be caught by a baddy, and one where rubbish would fly accross the screen and you'd have to shoot it. Maths and spelling games must be made fun for kids, bril sound effects etc, and instead of letting them use JAWS to read it, use fun entertaining voices like cartoons. If you could exhibit it at conferences, I don't see why schools and stuff wouldn't buy it, but maybe it would be a good idea to develop it with the help of teachers who can divide up what kids of different ages would know. [Audyssey] Winboard question
Hi all, I've tried Winboard in the past, but I'd like to know is there a way that I can change the difficulty, the level at which it plays is still too hard for me? I've tried reading help, and there's a lot of stuff there about chess engines, but I don't really understand what it's trying to say, do I need these engines to be able to change difficulty, from where do I get them and how do I install them? [Audyssey] Wonderful Service
Hi guys, With some game developers not answering emails, or maybe not giving great support, I just want to, as a buyer, highlight the excellent service over the past few days I got from7128. As you guys know my internet was giving me problems, but when it came back again I thought everything was fine. I ordered the Gamebook, but, for some reason, when I tried to download it, the page loaded slowly and it couldn't be displayed. After trying, I got a message that I'd downloaded the GB too many times, but I was puzzled, because some sites were downloading, but others weren't, but I didn't know this, so I sent an email asking for a new link. This link came, but again I couldn't download again. I emailed again, and John put a link up again for me, but again it wouldn't work. I still don't know where the problem was lying, but my brother said he could download it at his work. He did, the file works, and I'm now a very happy player of the games. It's great to see developers giving good service like this. Their demo says, Just imagine it! with an exclamation point, and, sure enough, if you type it that way it sounds like a really excited person. If, however, you type Imagine that! it is said with typical intonation. I tried a few other phrases and the same thing holds true, so I think that only key phrases can be made to be expressed that way. [Audyssey] default game voices
Hi, That tip Tom gave me about making a voice the windows default voice, how do I make it detect or redetect voices? What I mean is, with JAWS I've got eloquence voices, and I've also got some L and H voices, but they don't show up in the voice lists, is there a way to make an Eloquence voice a default Windows voice? Also, does anyone know, you can email offlist if not interesting to other people, but from where can I get more free voices, like those Festival ones, can they be used in windows? [Audyssey] Good Christmas presents?
Hi all, OK, here's the rundown, I've looked at RNIB, I've looked at Independent Living Aids, and, just to really, really make sure, I've looked at SANCB, but I really don't like anything, nothing new. What I want is maybe a puzzle or fun thing that, for someone who doesn't want to sit by the PC, will entertain that person. If it's a puzzle, it must be something that, first, can be done on a person's own, a one-player thing, and it would be cool if you can do things with it afterwards, or make different shapes, I don't want to import something that a person completes one time and that's it, it must be sort of entertainming or stimulating for long time. I still find it rubbish that nearly all the board games sold at these places are two-player or more, and even then, we haven't had anything new for years, actually it's getting less! I remember when you could still get a braille cludo, and a braille rubix cube type thing, but even these have disappeared. I do like the balls though, not a bad idea, but I really wish we'd see some new stuff! Oh yes, there's also a digital talking skipping rope at www.cobolt.co.uk but don't ask me what it tells you, a talking skipping rope? [Audyssey] New things I'd like to see
OK, Just for fun, expanding on the games and Christmas thing, here's some new fun products I'd like to see developed for blindys. Electronic Trivial Persuit machine: This little machine holds thousands of trivia from different subjects, and it comes with a modified board and counters. Blind cricket bowling machine: now, at last, like the sighted have been doing for years, a modified bowling machine for blind cricket? (differnce is that in blind cricket, ball is thrown underarm, that's why sighted machine can't be used.) Driving course and car for the blind!: This new device is an actual car simulator. This device includes a course, showing you how to change through all the gears, turning the steering wheel in exact relation to degree turns, etc. When you've passed course, you drive on simulated roads, with car shaking and moving exactly how you drive, even making you feel your driving speed, are you the calm, wonderful driver, or will you drive like a mad man, cutting in front of cars and getting involved in accidents, when you're involved in an accident, the simulator ejects you far into the air! Re: [Audyssey] Good Christmas presents?
Hi Thomas, That's exactly the problem! There's really not much fun stuff for a blind person when away from the PC. All my friends are complaining that that's all they get from sighted people for Christmas, iether music, clothing or audio books, and let's face it, for me at least I can only listen to a book once, and music you can't interact with! This one girl at uni with me always says that making lots of money isn't as much fun for a blindy, grin, because you can't go and buy fast cars or fun gadgets that are totally accessible! I even look at myself and can't really decide what's cool for Christmas that I'd really like that isn't computer related. I've always been blind, so am not fascinated by colours, fashion or clothing. You could probably buy something if you like outdoor activities like camping or playing music or that stuff, but I can't remember when last I've been able to get something fun that I don't use with the PC. The problem is doing the looking around, I mean, do you go to toy shops, and then, how do you explain to the people exactly what you're looking for? You even look at the blogs for blindies that suggest Christmas presents and they're all suggesting these borring, practical things like daisy book players or a JAWS SMA, the accessible fun topic is really always out of focus. Re: [Audyssey] Duck Hunt
There's a huge leep between round 17 and 18. On round 17, I get a perfect round, but then on 18, I only managed to hit 1 duck! Liam, is there a way I can start from round 18, even if I have a score of 0, I just don't like always having to work upwards like that. Ari - Original Message - From: Bryan [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Sunday, December 16, 2007 7:36 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Quick question Hi all, First of all this question isn't entirely off topic. It actually has to do with some of the voices Phil used in the Sarah game. I seem to remember him saying a while back that he used some of the Loquendo voices for some of the statues and suits of armor found throughout the castle. I was wondering, Phil, where you got them and how much they tend to cost? I've looked on the Loquendo web site and they don't seem to have any information about pricing. I'm curious because not only would they make great screen reader voices, but if I start developing my own games I might very well choose to use some of the Loquendo voices myself. They seem by far to be the most versatile synthetic voices out there seeing as you can actually make them express different emotions. I've never heard a synthe laugh so convincingly {smile}. But to avoid cluttering up the list with what some wil doubtless consider off topic traffic, write me off list if you can, anybody. I'd appreciate any insight into this matter. Re: [Audyssey] unfinishable games was Duck Hunt
I don't want to think what 20 is like, what's it like Thomas? You'd probably just pressing space from the beginning or something? If I'm not wrong, isn't Sonic Invaders also unfinishable? What games in our accessible community are definitely impossible to finish? With these games that become too fast, you actually wonder, you think to yourself, if only I could finish this level, surely the developer wants me to finish this now? [Audyssey] Songs about gaming, a bit of fun
Hi guys, Here's a bit of fun which I hope is on-topic. I was reading the Wikipedia article on Space Invaders, when they talked about bands mentioning it in there songs. Other famous games mentioned in songs is of course the song by The Who with the deaf, dumb and blind kid who could play a mean pinball, and here are the Space Invader songs, anyone know of other pop songs featuring games in? . In 1978 , a punk group.Hostage from the small Scottish town Campbeltown made a demo called Space Invader Wizard the lyrics tell what it is like to be a Space Invaders addict Staring into the light trying to find yourself, but it's only a reflection of somebody else. Lyrics by Morris Shaw music by David and Fraser Shaw [2] . In 1979 , an obscure group of Australian performers calling themselves Player One released a song entitled Space Invaders, using sound effects from the game. Player One put out an obscure album called Game Over, but the song can also be found on a few 1980s collections albums, including one of the period called Full Boar. It was also released as a 7 record in Australia only, backed with a second possibly-related song entitled A Menacing Glow in the Sky. . In 1980 , a Cleveland, Ohio DJ named Victor Blecman (aka Uncle Vic) released another song entitled Space Invaders, which likewise included sound effects from the game, ending with the lyrics speeding up faster and faster until the invaders crash down at the end. This song was only released as a single, and these days can mainly be found in novelty collections, for example Dr. Demento 's album Dr. Demento's Mementos. . In 1980, the American/British band The Pretenders recorded an instrumental track called Space Invader on their first album. The end of the song featured sounds of game play from the arcade game . Also in 1980, British dance troupe Hot Gossip recorded a song entitled Space Invaders (once again, with sound effects from the game). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Invaders Ari --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. For a very nice list see the games to play online page at http://www.whitestick.co.uk/ongames.html Then, there are also some fantasy gamebooks wich you might like, and could read with jaws. These are short rp type adventures where you progress through the story by choosing links on were to go next, occasionally rolling dice (often the website will take care of that for you, and if not, there's a very nice free self-voicing dice program available). you can find a list of these gamebooks on http://www.whitestick.co.uk/fantasy.html then, there are streight text adventure games (again accessible with Jaws), where you progress by typing commands such as go north take pick etc. these can also be fun, if you like puzles. to find out more see http://www.microheaven.com/IFGuide/IFGuide.pl?step=6c=0 there are some general lists of games which it might help you to have a look at, and try any you like the look of. personally, i recommend trying as much as poss, sinse there are a lot of games out there, and even one you don't initially like the sound of might surprise you. Re: [Audyssey] gamer wanting a challenge!
Hi Thomas, What I've always wondered about games like STFC and Trek 2000, do we need a background in Star Trek, or can we just play them? If we need to understand the whole ST thing, where to go to read on it for beginners? Correct me if I'm wrong, but ST hasn't really been broadcast on the SABC, so it's probably really enthusiasts or people who saw it in other countries who know much about it here. Take command of a modern tank for some sserious combat against enemy forces. Complete six objectives including destroying inteligence bases, hunting down ammo and supply trucks, destroy a train carrying troops, and more as you lead the allies to victory. Again one of the most realistic and fun blind accessible games out there. You can get GMA Tank Commander from: http://www.gmagames.com 3. Star Trek Final Conflict. Take command of the Federation fleet as you defend the Federation from Klingons, Romulans, and Borg in this turn based combat strategy game. It's very challenging for most gamers and you can find it at my web site: http://www.usagames.us 4. Montezuma's Return. In this all new side-scroller you can take the roll of Angela Summers as she navigates Emperor Montezuma's forgotten fortress hunting for gems, gold, and other lost treasures. You must avoid or flee several traps and monsters. You can find a demo of the current test release from my web site: http://www.usagames.us 5. Sarah And the Castle Of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In this all new FPS game play Sarah, a teenage girl, as she breaks in to Hogwarts for an evening of magic making and exploration. Drop in to visit some of the characters from the Harry Potter books, avoid the caretaker, and solve lots of puzzles. You can get it from: http://www.pcsgames.net 6. Monkey Business. After Dr. Smegles lab has been robbed you must set out on an adventure to capture all the monkeys from the lab and locate all the missing teleporters. Along the way you must explore such places as the jungle, ancient Aztec temple, climb a wall of vines, navigate deadly ledges, visit a western town, and more. I walk to this place near the beginning where there are three tone wheels, and three doors. I turn the wheels to the highest tone, like in the training, but when I try and go to any of the doors, all of them are still locked, what am I doing wrong? Also, is there a way to make your power suite last a bit longer without having to recharge it, because while I'm trying to solve the tone wheel problem, I'm always having to go right back to this powerup station. Re: [Audyssey] (Suggestion) A Real Casino Game
Yeah, All In Play also hardly update. I remember when they were still Zform, they'd been around for quite a bit but hadn't released anything yet, my friend and I had this little joke calling them the company who are always planning to do something, because when you read there press releases in Audyssey, it was always about what they were planning to do, grin. But give them credit, if I'm not wrong, were they the first company to do the whole online multiplayer thing? I'd be quite interested to know how many subscribers they have, for me the pricing seems expensive, but I must say they did a good job as developers of marketing themselves, they did all this promotional stuf even at sighted games places and exhibiting with huge companies like Dolphin if I remember properly. Thinking about who buys games, Thomas, I know this might sound like a weird question, but I'm often quite interested as to how many blind people from the developing world buy accessible games, or if some schools have bought some for the pupils to play. I remember it was my typing teacher from grade 7 who put the text adventures on the PC at our school and encouraged us to play them after the day's lesson. That's the thing that puts me a bit off the game, that you need other players, also, what I'd like to know is, a bit of a dumb question, but when you've figured out how to do a strike, like on which tone to press and when to swing, if you do that all the time, are you then guaranteed strikes, like is the game sort of stuck in that respect, because it wouldn't be cool if you can bowl strikes all the time without the game losing a lot of playability. This game really could be improved by allowing tournaments, competitions where computers become harder and harder, give the game like an aim where you can, for example play against computers of varying difficulty for the World Championship, etc? Re: [Audyssey] Tenpin Alley Suggestion
Cool, thanks for that, I remember there was a bowling game on Nintendo, and it was possible, for example on the first role, if you did a certain thing, I think it was two steps left and bowl at half, you used to get strike every time! I've had that happen on many occasions. It's all just luck. Hi guys, Have just tried DH, really love it, especially the old sounds, more games with old sounds! Just a question, does anyone know of a way where, even if my score is 0, I could somehow start from a later round, and, I'm guessing that this game is unfinishable? Really bril, thanks so much Liam! Hi Daniel, Also read Audyssey Magazine, that's how I got started. If you enjoy text adventures, the back issues of Audyssey really give you goodreviews. Hi Damniel. Nice to meet another Uk student type bloke on this list. There is a hole load of self-voicing games available in different genres from action to sports available, everything from trivia stuff such as you'd find on Pressakey.net, to completely 3D virtual environmnet games, where you walk round a base or castle solving puzles, killing monsters etc. though not all of them are free, all have playable demos so you can get a feel for if you like the game first. for the largest and most uptodate list of audio games, check out the fantastic games and where to find them list on http://www.pcsgames.net/ then, there are quite a few websites and other places that provide games which you'd be able to play with Jaws. You might particularly like these sorts of things if your an Rpg fan. I could recommend some of my favourites, but I'll save that for another mail sinse this one is about to explode. Beware the Grue! [Audyssey] Bavisoft and Mithril games?
Hi all, First, because it's now been over a month, and after two support tickets being opened without response, I'm very sad to say Mithril are probably not interested in game development or support? I for one am very upset about this, since I'd heard how HF was so much like Tetris, I really wanted an accessible tetris-type game, but can't get it because of the Klango problems. I think it was Kelly, I just want to know if your friend also ever received Grizzly Gulch, because I was also thinking of getting Chillingham, but it's really frustrating when a person doesn't know where they stand with developers. I'm happy though that, although BSC Games hasn't been updated for a bit, they still answered in bril time to give me my Troopanum Code again, so thanks for that. [Audyssey] Quest Question
Hi all, First, am quite disappointed with the Quest interpreter, it won't work with JAWS, I don't know if it's just me, but you have to let it speak like Winfrotz TTS, you can't use JAWS. Anyway, what I want to know is, can I, and if I can, how do I, then change the voice Quest uses to read the game, it uses that sappi robot voice, but there's nothing in the options to change it. For those of you who love IF, I'm recommending a cool, tricky game I've found, you play it with the Alan interpreter, it's called Closet. It's just one location, basically you're stuck in a closet and can't get out, tricky. [Audyssey] .z80 files again
Hi all, I've been trying to convert .z80 files to play them again, but am still having problems. With Unquill, the thing won't convert, just tells me to try with these other parameters and suggestions, but none of them actually convert, example, I don't know if I'm doing this right, I type unquill c:\m.z80 c:\m.z5 -t5 but then I get stuff that says I should rather try -l, or -c, but none of these work. I've successfully using spconvert converted .z80 to .sna games, but can't load these with the level 9 or anyother interpreter. Maybe I should try and play a .z80 game with a dos program under the windows command line, but which emulator or interpreter to use? In short, has anyone managed to play .z80 games using a system with Windows XP and JAWS, iether through the command line or somehow else, I've tried so much with these things without success. Re: [Audyssey] Great news everyone! Accessible Facebook Game!
Hi Greg, Facebook is a sort of, I really don't know how to describe it, social networking type site, I don't know if you've maybe heard of Myspace? There are games on there, because developers make applications to use through Facebook. I've also tried BlackJack, no luck with it though, it says you must choose how much you want to put on the table but it says that's at the bottom-left of the screen, but there doesn't seem to be any JAWS control to do this, I can't go further with that one, it doesn't seem to use a standard web Interface. With WarBook, it actually is seeming OK, but there are numbers there which don't seem to be labelled, I'm not too sure what some of them stand for. [Audyssey] Fifa 2008
Hi guys, Really can't understand this, for me, looking at this, FIFA 2008 is just as bad as 2004 and the rest sort of. I unfortunately think nothing will again ever come close to fifa 99. You can put the sfx softer, but that puts ball and crowd softer, the crowd are very loud. When I take the base off my speakers, I can sort of hear the ball, but it's not like 99 where you could here the ball bounce and everything. I also can only tackle with the sliding tackle, since using d to tackle, I can't hear it and by the time I've realised I have tackled the guy, I've kicked the ball away, and, what's worse, when you just kick straight after you tackle, it kicks the ball towards your own goal, since the guy hasn't had time to turn round yet. Even the sliding tackle thing is rubbish, because the boos and stuff are so loud, you have to wait till a bit quieter to try and pass the ball. I also couldn't hear when I was being tackled, trying to rely on commentary saying, great defending, etc, but most of the time, I really didn't know who had the ball. I'm really quite disappointed in the game, I'm so upset that I'll probably never be able to play new fifa games properly again. My problem with 99, is that I'd really sort of worked out strategies for doing everything, and I really want to try something new. I can now beat the best times on easy, but normal and hard are a bit fast, maybe I should try again. [Audyssey] Mithril games and Interactive Fiction
Hi guys, First, I hope I'm not wrong, but Mithril games now seems like a company who aren't really into audio games anymore. Why I'm saying this is, it's nearly two weeks now that they've never gotten back to me about my problems with Klango not speaking the menues. Very sad. Now my next point which I want to ask. It's basically about interactive fiction. I've never been able to solve a game or get far without looking at the solution or, well not with Inform, using hints. My question is, how must a player of these games think? For me, so much of these puzzles are, I don't want to say illogical in some ways, but really, most of them I'd never think about doing a certain way. I mean, A Bare's Night Out was recommended to me for children. Iether these children or people who plays these games have way super IQ's, or I just don't have the brain for these. I'd never think for example that I'd have to hit a pipe with a disk to clear it to get a key, etc. And then the whole thing about the ball and the cat, I threw the ball at the cat to wake her, but I never knew that I had to shake the ball to get the cat to follow, that the cat could climb things, it's just that I'm really rubbish with these games! Re: [Audyssey] Mithril games and Interactive Fiction
Thanks for that Lora. I remember you were also asking about IF, have you used the Inform Interpreter, do you understand how to navigate the Hints System? I have still no luck trying to figure out settings to get the inform and tads interpreters working properly on the Pac Mate, I am trying it on a BX model. I wish we could speak to someone at FS about this, because these would be really stimulating to be able to carry the games around and play when we have nothing else to do. One thing to remember before starting out is to use save a lot. If you're permitted to, save before you do anything you think might have a real effect on the game. You can return to this save repeatedly after trying various things. A few tips: You need to get into the game designer's head. If there is a list of verbs available to you, read through it. This gives you an idea of just what can be done in the game. If there isn't such a list, be prepared to try all sorts of things. Read carefully. Sometimes there are hints in the text; when there aren't, once you have an idea of what's important to the designer, you'll be better able to guess what he might have been thinking. You'll begin to learn what's important as you read his room and item descriptions, and any other text in the game. Often, in the end, it's just the idea not to be afraid to try anything. Yet a good game designer really should give you hints and nudges right in the text; remember that almost none of the text in a text adventure is worthless. It's there for a reason; you just need to figure out what it is. Good luck. I'll try to be more coherent when I get home. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of ari Sent: Tuesday, November 20, 2007 4:09 AM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: [Audyssey] Mithril games and Interactive Fiction Hi guys, First, I hope I'm not wrong, but Mithril games now seems like a company who aren't really into audio games anymore. Re: [Audyssey] Getting Back into Interactive Fiction
Hi Lora, Yes, I'm also getting back into Interactive Fiction as well, I'll try and give you an overview. Many games take different interpreters. Sorry if I'm explaining what you already know, but am just not sure how much you've played Interactive Fiction before. Interpreters open the game files like word processor, you get different interpreters that can be used in Windows like Tads, Frotz, etc. I think your best bet is when you go to the interactive fiction archive, for each year of the interactive fiction competition they put together a nice installer of all games and interpreters of that year. I still can't use .z80 files, but that is just that I'm not good at converting them with the command line tools. The interactive fiction archive will have everything for you, maybe you should download the ashes.exe file from the /starters directory, but you can email me off-list if you have problems. As for the Pac Mate, I've heard you can play IF on it, but it was me who asked the questions, as I am having trouble in getting frotz for the pocket pc to load games, as well as tads to even read the screen properly. I think I'll try and write to Freedom Scientific to see whether they can't make it more accessible with scripts or something. If you want me to send you privately, I have got some games which are really cool beginner games for interactive fiction, you just choose from a menue. [Audyssey] Vipgameszone demos
Hi guys, Talking about games and demos, one company whose demo policy for me is quite stupid has to be vipgameszone! From the time you first activate the thing, you only have the three days, and whenever you want to try it, you have to be online, oh, and the new Beach Volleyball only runs for 10 minutes. Re: [Audyssey] Vipgameszone demos
Hi Dark, I loved the ESP demos, where you could play the first level without any restrictions at all, and the original Pinball demo. It's just also that with the vipgameszone thing, if you're on dial-up, you actually have to dial everytime you just want a quick game? To be honest, I think the problem with the sports, football that way is too restrictive, I mean, you don't have much choice, like huge runs or lucky shots, but I feel the Volleyball, even on insane, they should have made the time a bit shorter, it's supposed to be insane, but I couldn't see much of a difference to easy, only a little shorter time, but nothing that made me press the buttons much more madly. There are times when you play games and you need total consentration and need to sort of really be in the mood and accurate with the keyboard, but other games are just laid back. Hi Claudio, Here's the link for Kelly and Brian Hartgen's reviews of Grizzly Gulch, plus things you can listen to. http://www.bavisoft.com/download.htm Please remember though that, I'm not trying to be a killjoy or anything, but I think it would be wise for you to wait to hear if other people get what they order before you decide to order yourself. This is quite sad, because wasn't Grizzly Gulch the very first audio game around? I also think the guy from Bavisoft was on the list. Actually wonder why he unsubscribed, given that he makes games, I really appreciate Thomas, Phil, and many other developers really keeping in touch with us like they do, they do and chatting about games, it shows passion and commitment and seriousness to develop games. Hi Tobias and Thomas, I've often thought of the Linux route, since this will be off-topic, you can email me offlist with your replies. I'll explain now what happens. I had to stop using my old laptop because the, even though the hardware was fine, it couldn't run properly anymore, and, because it was a secondhand laptop, I didn't get a Windows disk, so when the software developed many problems, and some other components didn't function properly, I bought the new one, especially as I need Office 2003 for uni. The old laptop has very low specifications, I mean, old like Pentium 2, 32 MB Ram, which I made 128, but the point is, we tried installing Ubuntu with Orca, and it wouldn't run well, the laptop was too slow. What is the best linux system to put on. I was thinking of Speakup, but they tell me I need a number pad, and can't use speakup on a laptop. I have a doubletalk synthesizer which I can use, so I'd like something which would talk me through the installation. Most of all, I need to be able to ask people for help. When I've downloaded whatever you guys suggest for old computers, then I need to ask someone to explain to me how to burn the iso to CD, and when I start installing, I'll need to ask help for things I don't understand. I've heard of the blinux list, but everyone there seems so technical and they really talk so high that I always feel that I don't know what they're talking about, but I lose nothing in trying linux on it, as that laptop is just standing there, and I really can't mess it up. Then I also need some sort of guide to help me understand the whole linux environment on text, so, you see, even though I really want to try and do it, it seems so complicated! Hi Raul, These aren't z8, though, they're z80, they won't open with frotz. Speaking of Text Adventures, is there an email list or group dedicated to them? I'm just asking because they're not discussed much on the Audyssey list, which is a great pity. The 2007 IF competition was held, and nearly nothing on our list? Re: [Audyssey] Cricket and FIFA games
Brian Lara International Cricket 2007 expands the series' trademark fluid, dynamic gameplay mechanics to deliver a thoroughly entertaining and competitive game that captures all the tension, skill and intensity of world-class international cricket. Thanks to the official ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 content, Brian Lara International Cricket 2007 features licensed players, including world cricket stars Andrew Flintoff, Ricky Ponting, Mahendra Dhoni, Muttiah Muralitharan and of course, Brian Lara himself. In addition to players, the game leads with a dedicated ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 mode featuring all the official teams, stadia, kits and equipment of the tournament. Further modes include a fully licensed ICC Champions' Trophy competition and exhibition matches including One Day Games, Test Matches and exciting 20-over run fests. When you want to get competitive for real, Brian Lara International Cricket 2007 delivers online competitive play on PC (LAN and online) and Xbox Live. Brian Lara International Cricket 2007 adds extra depth to the series' complete batting, bowling and fielding experience whilst retaining its trademark accessible playability. The acclaimed batting play sees the introduction of subtle edges, sweepshots and the ability to use your feet to dance down wicket and smash the ball over the boundary for six. Bowling sees a much-improved set of delivery types, thanks to changes in the way the ball swings in the air and reacts off the pitch, showcasing Shane Warne's huge variation of spinning deliveries and Steve Harmison's raw pace and even reverse swing as the ball degrades. In Fielding, there's a new reflex-testing slip catch system and players can now be run out at both ends and be stumped by alert wicket keepers. A striking advancement is the photo-realistic visuals; with hundreds of real player likenesses being modelled in high detail, complete with animated facial expressions to capture the intensity and emotion of international cricket. Stadia, including all eight official World Cup venues, have also been created with a new level of textured detail and they make use of proprietary shader technology for realistic, subtle and changing lighting effects, such as time of day and weather. Re: [Audyssey] Cricket and FIFA games
We can't play Sensible Soccer either. No commentary, and, I don't know if you guys have ever seen where you're playing, and then because the camera or something changes, you suddenly have to run in another direction for the next play. I once saw a Sega Saturn which had a premier League game like that, but luckily you could turn it off there. That game had such a cool feature, there would be commentary and stuff, but you could play a practise mode, you choose your team and your oponents, but it would just be your oponent's goalie on the pitch, so 11 against 1! Fun to play these long balls run, get them again and, well, sometimes score! Thinking of that, another game with the rubbish camera feature was Jona Lomo rugby, not playable. Re: [Audyssey] Cricket and FIFA games
I at least know that Pro Evolution is probably not a good idea, looking at these two bits from the description. We've all got so much to look forward to, starting with the retuned controls giving players more control over weighted passes, one-twos, and so on. This ties in neatly with the improved animation, which not only looks more realistic, but requires you to time kicks and shots perfectly for maximum power - you're more likely to scuff the ball and make weak, inaccurate shots if you attempt to play them while off balance or out of step. Hi Ian, Apparrently Sensible Soccer was this great game in the 1990's, and, because of some features, fans still say it was one of the best soccer games, although I think it was on the Megadrive. I think it could have been the gameplay? Ian, did you have a Nintendo Entertainment System? If you did, do you remember the weird soccer game on there, the one where when you dribbled it made this funny sound, and when you shot it sort of made this high sound while the ball went through the air and there was music everytime someone scored a goal, the crowd sounded like a Kettle! and the halftime show apparrently was dancing girls. A was shoot and B was pass. Re: [Audyssey] Cricket and FIFA games
FIFA 97, I have the PC version, but it won't even install under XP! Am so angry! Is the new shooting thing a powerbar or a moving arrow, I don't suppose we'd have any chance with an arrow, since we wouldn't know where on the pitch we were. 2004 I think is an arrow, that's why I missed always! Re: [Audyssey] Cricket and FIFA games
Does PRO have good commentary? I don't know whether to go for FIFA or pro, must decide soon. There is also Sensible Soccer, ever tried or heard of it? Later on this afternoon, I'll post the titles and prices and maybe one of you guys can help me decide on this. FIFA 2002 was the worst FIFA ever, they didn't even have sounds for the tackles, and there wasn't really any loud ball sounds. That's a pity, because for me that was an interesting Premier League Season, because there were new teams like Fulham and Blackburn and Liverpool who I support had won those three cups the season before. What would be cool is now that SA has the 2010 WC, they might put the SA league in and I can play with Wits University! Re: [Audyssey] Cricket and FIFA games
Cricket 97 was very playable. It was possible to score good totals if you consentrated, but sighted people who can place the ball some of them managed to score over 1000 runs in one innings! You sometimes had to guess when to run, which was the problem, but generally, if you knew you timed the ball OK, you could risk it. Then there was the problem of not knowing where fielders were, but thank goodness the fielders in the game didn't go in for catches, or you weren't caught or played it to fielders often. I remember being in a one-day match, I was 189 for 8, and I needed 295 to win, and I did it! That's still one of my best moments. Re: [Audyssey] Cricket and FIFA games
Yeah Ian, it's sometimes cool watching other people playing stuff. I love listening to my cousin with the Nintendo Entertainment System playing Elavator Action or Contra, or Tiny Toons, the different music of the levels, etc. Did anyone else like me just put on Elavator Action and shoot wildly, loved the sound of that funny gun. But I'm still convinced I might have found a text-based football manager, it's just I can't find an accessible Spectrum Emulator, again, if anyone could please who knows more about these things try it. What I mean, I'm Liverpool, I know that Hamman plays in the centre of midfield, so when he gets the ball, I expect him to be in that position, and so try and can iether pass to the side or back, or forward, or, if brave, try and run. A lot of the time he is out of position, and I end up passing the ball out!, but that's part of the sort of fun. You have to listen to the crowd, if they are louder, you're nearer the oponent's goal, and can try and have a shot. The commentator might say your name louder. I don't know about the new fifa's, but with 2002 till 2004, I don't think they could really be played, since the sound effects of the ball were softer, the commentator didn't say the names much, and, most important, you couldn't really hear tackles. I'm surprised that your friend can play 2006 and 2007, no judgment here, but I've heard that to shoot you have to hold the d in and then let go when you see the arrow or angle at the right place in the goal. Iether it's not as visual as I've heard, or, if your friend is totally blind, I'd love to know how he gets his shots on target, and not sailing wide, since I think they were using this on fifa 2004, and I couldn't play it, since I could run, but everytime I shot, it went wide, please ask him what he does, would be very interesting. Of course the bad thing about the FIFA games is that you definitely need sighted assistance, because you can only move through menues and go to the next matches using the mouse. I've decided to buy Pro Evolution and Sensible soccer, will tell you if I can play them, talking about taking risks! One hint I can give you is, if you want, for example fifa 2007, wait till 2008 comes out, then 2007's price absolutely falls, so you sort of can take a gamble without regreting it too much. I do think that us blind football players should try and network to find solutions.
