[Audyssey] O.T. PS3 gaming system

Hello,

This is a way off topic message so if people want to respond privately
that's fine.

Does anyone know anything about a ps3? Specifically how to maintain
it? I'm needing to know how to clean it's internal components like
treating it like a computer and taking some compressed air to it or
something? I'd also like to know how much hd space or whatever it uses
and if it's possible to hook the thing to somewhere and back it up? It
is getting very hot and I don't want it to fry.

Agreed we're  getting off topic a bit- but it seems I've caused a bit of 
confusion, and I'd like to try to clear it up if possible.
I'm fully aware of how useful and popular linux/unix is, especially in server 
environments, and use terminals on a regular basis.
My example of commands was poorly chosen - I was trying to come up with 
something that was simple and would make sense, so thanks 
for clarifying that one.
However, when I said dos/terminals are complicated, I wasn't talking about 
computer experts or admins. I was talking about the 
everyday users - even many of those who are computer literate - who have told 
me straight up they've never heard of a command line, 
or don't know how it works, or know it exists but have never used it in their 
lives (some of these have been programmers, btw),.
These are the vast majority of computer users, and for them, there is nothing 
better than a gui, because it allows them to do what 
they want/need to without having to learn command syntax. That's why I was 
saying dos is outdated - not because it really is 
useless, but because the original post placed it as a system usable by the 
general public, which it is not.
I certainly didn't mean to cause any offense, and apologize if I have.

This is just plain wrong.  Dos was not overly complicated, unix still
exists, and it is very similar to dos.  The only thing dos didn't do was
multitask (though later versions of dos and 3rd party utilities did solve
this problem to some degree), the fact that you didn't understand it
doesn't make it complicated, confusing and useless.  Unix is still in very
wide use today, and yes, even unix has gui interfaces, but ask any decent
system admin, and they'll tell you that if you need something done
quickly, and accurately, there's no substitute for a straight up command
line, since you can accomplish with a single command what might take
several clicks with a mouse, and (in rare cases) can't be done at all
using the gui.
Nothing wrong with dos, unix, or any other type of operating sytem, each
person uses what works for them, and that's just fine, that's the whole
point of choice afterall.
In your example, the reason your cd command din't change you to another
drive, is because changing drives is a simple as typing in the new drive
letter.  You want drive d or drive e, just type d: or e:.  That's all
there is to it.
But, in any case, this is way off topic for the list, so let's try to
limit discussions on this.  The fact that you can still play dos games
whether it be with emulators, or by converting them to windows programs by
recompiling/rewriting them in modern languages/compilers shouldn't be too
far off topic though.  I'd be more than willing to assist anyone wishing
to port dos games to windows if they have source code for said games.
It's often not a straightforward port, but it's also usually not all that
difficult either, just a matter of recoding to take advantage of event
driven instead of command driven interfaces.  I'm perfectly to help anyone
needing/wanting help porting programs to windows, linux, mac, or any other
os I can get my hands on if I can make it talk.  It's extremely rewarding
to see a program be revived from ashes, and see it running on modern
operating systems, not to mention it allows many others to enjoy that
program who might otherwise not have had the chance.

limit discussions on this.  The fact that you can still play dos games
whether it be with emulators, or by converting them to windows programs
by recompiling/rewriting them in modern languages/compilers shouldn't be
too far off topic though.  I'd be more than willing to assist anyone
wishing to port dos games to windows if they have source code for said
games. It's often not a straightforward port, but it's also usually not
all that difficult either, just a matter of recoding to take advantage
of event driven instead of command driven interfaces.  I'm perfectly to
help anyone needing/wanting help porting programs to windows, linux,
mac, or any other os I can get my hands on if I can make it talk.  It's
extremely rewarding to see a program be revived from ashes, and see it
running on modern operating systems, not to mention it allows many
others to enjoy that program who might otherwise not have had the chance.

it amaizes me that people today do not know how to use even basic dos
commands. they don't know about stuff like extended memory, upper memory
blocks, how to enable them, the fact that for example lotus123 for dos
requires xmb and extended memory and upper memory to be enabled to run

Its good to hear the narator works well on the xbox 1,  but that's amazing
news to hear they are working for text to speech within games , that could
be the bridge between audio games and main stream games that everyone's been
waiting for. thanks for the update, I'll have to keep a listen out for more
information on this in the future

[Audyssey] dos and memory usage (was Running DOS games on windows 10?)

This is just plain wrong.  Dos was not overly complicated, unix still 
exists, and it is very similar to dos.  The only thing dos didn't do was 
multitask (though later versions of dos and 3rd party utilities did solve 
this problem to some degree), the fact that you didn't understand it 
doesn't make it complicated, confusing and useless.  Unix is still in very 
wide use today, and yes, even unix has gui interfaces, but ask any decent 
system admin, and they'll tell you that if you need something done 
quickly, and accurately, there's no substitute for a straight up command 
line, since you can accomplish with a single command what might take 
several clicks with a mouse, and (in rare cases) can't be done at all 
using the gui.
Nothing wrong with dos, unix, or any other type of operating sytem, each 
person uses what works for them, and that's just fine, that's the whole 
point of choice afterall.
In your example, the reason your cd command din't change you to another 
drive, is because changing drives is a simple as typing in the new drive 
letter.  You want drive d or drive e, just type d: or e:.  That's all 
there is to it.
But, in any case, this is way off topic for the list, so let's try to 
limit discussions on this.  The fact that you can still play dos games 
whether it be with emulators, or by converting them to windows programs by 
recompiling/rewriting them in modern languages/compilers shouldn't be too 
far off topic though.  I'd be more than willing to assist anyone wishing 
to port dos games to windows if they have source code for said games. 
It's often not a straightforward port, but it's also usually not all that 
difficult either, just a matter of recoding to take advantage of event 
driven instead of command driven interfaces.  I'm perfectly to help anyone 
needing/wanting help porting programs to windows, linux, mac, or any other 
os I can get my hands on if I can make it talk.  It's extremely rewarding 
to see a program be revived from ashes, and see it running on modern 
operating systems, not to mention it allows many others to enjoy that 
program who might otherwise not have had the chance.

it amaizes me that people today do not know how to use even basic dos
commands. they don't know about stuff like extended memory, upper memory
blocks, how to enable them, the fact that for example lotus123 for dos
requires xmb and extended memory and upper memory to be enabled to run

All of those games could easily be ported to powerbasic, even the dos 
games, which would make them runable on windows, with very little work. 
I've ported all kinds of quick basic, gw basic, and others to powerbasic, 
and it's trivially easy.  If someone could get ahold of Jim's source, I'd 
be more than happy to do the conversions, just so all Jim's hard work 
doesn't have to go by the wayside.

The only issue I have had is getting agt games like cosmoserve to output 
properly.

Com0com is fine to get installed, com10 is what I use.

Well I found DOS easy to use. It was just a matter of memorizing
commands. Now we have just abunch of robots going thru life. I do miss
some of my favorite text adventures like Leather Goddesses of Fobos,
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Leisure Suit Larry, but it's not
worth it for me to fool around with now. With my luck, I'll try to
install this DOS Box and it'll all crash! Then, I'll be out of
commission for God knows how long. Thank you, no thank you! Ya'll can
play!

There are a couple fighting games, and I suppose Rock Band if you have tons
and tons of patience.
But the choices are minimal and not really worth it.

[Audyssey] interesting story off the paper

Hi.
So this is an interesting story off the paper.

Its only 1 study but if others find this way, games may get left off the 
hook.
I am not saying children should play r18 games after all thats why we 
have a rating system, but if games are blamed less for life and just 
seen as games things may be a lot better.
There can be those that are irisponsible with guns and the same could be 
for games.

Games are not real just yet, I play games to stay away from the real world.
The moment games became a solution to real world issues I think I'd have 
to stop for a bit.

with windows10 no recovery disk is really needed. you just go in and hit 
the reset button in settings. but before i reset i always try to fix the 
issue first.

Pretty sad that a simple question on here gets people bashing.
Come on!
Why should your basic computer user, who only wants things to work, have to 
enter a million commands, troubleshoot, figure things 
out if it doesn’t interest them in the slightest?
It’s not their job nor should it be.
It’s like telling an auto mechanic to work on a computer when he’s used to 
being under the hood of a car. Or telling a clothes 
designer to start designing tires for big semi’s because hey, you need to know 
how this works since I do and because you take the 
easy route, that makes you a bad person.
If that isn’t the intent of your message I apologize, but certainly seems so. 
Yes, I do agree, reformatting should be your last 
option but windows 10 makes it so beyond ridiculously easy to both back up and 
restore your pc from said backup
As far as dos goes – it’s the same thing. I haven’t heard it mentioned in years 
by anyone mainstream – so how can you expect anyone 
in the last even 10 years to know about it? Come on, again. Most of the things 
I google about for dos come up with complex pages 
that assume, similar to Linux, that you have a basic understanding of said 
operating system and it’s commands.
Really disheartening that a thread brought up with such a simple question gets 
diverted like this.

Hi
Pretty sad that a simple question on here gets people bashing.
Come on!
Why should your basic computer user, who only wants things to work, have to 
enter a million commands, troubleshoot, figure things out if it doesn’t 
interest them in the slightest?
It’s not their job nor should it be.
It’s like telling an auto mechanic to work on a computer when he’s used to 
being under the hood of a car. Or telling a clothes designer to start designing 
tires for big semi’s because hey, you need to know how this works since I do 
and because you take the easy route, that makes you a bad person.
If that isn’t the intent of your message I apologize, but certainly seems so. 
Yes, I do agree, reformatting should be your last option but windows 10 makes 
it so beyond ridiculously easy to both back up and restore your pc from said 
backup
As far as dos goes – it’s the same thing. I haven’t heard it mentioned in years 
by anyone mainstream – so how can you expect anyone in the last even 10 years 
to know about it? Come on, again. Most of the things I google about for dos 
come up with complex pages that assume, similar to Linux, that you have a basic 
understanding of said operating system and it’s commands.
Really disheartening that a thread brought up with such a simple question gets 
diverted like this.

I had someone I was working with.
I ask her, what do you do if  it breaks.
Her answer, incert the recovery disk, tell it to run then it just works.
Ok, I say then what do you do with it, load everything up was her reply.
There are 2 problems.
1.  bloated units on default config are just that default, who wants that.
2.  While people think reformatting is the last resort, running reformat 
certainly is the last resort.
But the recovery cd takes it away, it makes it work people don't seem to 
care how anymore.
We are losing our ability to fix stuff.

Hmmm.
I do agree some of those commands are a bit inflexable.
the cd command yes you could switch folders but still remain in your 
home drive.

You have to switch to that drive first.
But it all depends how you were brought up.
I was born in 1982, in 1991 I got my first computer.
for 5.5 years I used dos.
in 1996 I got my first windows system but still used dos.
in 2002 I got my next system with windows.
Still used dos for some stuff a bit less.
in 2006 I got my next system, still used dos a bit.
in 2010 I got another system.
Still used dos, though by then the system was dieing the battery got 
vary hot and the drives were failing.

In 2011 I stopped using dos.
Its 2017 now and about 4 years back I got the system I am using now.
I only use windows, however through my teen years I used dos for gaming etc.
Its true I used the keysoft shell most of my life so the only time I 
ever did true dos were reformats, setups, or gaming so I probably didn't 
do much.
Where I had to do something complex I set a batch file to do it though I 
have read more complex dos stuff.
Dos died with the later windows and the fact with 64 bit units ms is 
really pushing dos out.
Problem is now everyone thinks that if the system puts an error out they 
expect to click something for it to go away, no one appreciates how 
things work.
Judging from your mail, you were either going through the electronic 
borg process between worlds of windows and dos or you had a hard time of it.
Dos was a single task nightmare and sometimes I wished it could be a bit 
better.

But I still liked it at times.
Even screen readers now are not as good as the dos ones were.

that's not complicated at all. for me at least. I got my first pc back 
in 1992 when I was 10. It only had dos on it. dos is what I grew up 
with. for me, dos is just as easy as windows or mac or android is today. 
In my opinion dos is very very easy to learn and use.

and for his dos games, he wrote them in q-basic for dos.

it amaizes me that people today do not know how to use even basic dos 
commands. they don't know about stuff like extended memory, upper memory 
blocks, how to enable them, the fact that for example lotus123 for dos 
requires xmb and extended memory and upper memory to be enabled to run 
and so on.

then run setup

then in virtual pair1 in the tree view in the first edit box enter com8

in second edit box enter com9

then go into its folder and run nvda.bat

then alt tab back to the folder and run dosbox.exe

then put NVDA into sleep mode with caps lock shift z if using laptop layout.

then type asap and hit enter

asap will talk using your current nvda voice.,


then press enter you should hear c colon back greater.

now type something like

cd\games

hit enter

then to play football, type


fball.exe


and press enter.

then the game starts.

[Audyssey] correction on possible downtime and moderation queues.

Hello all,

As a correction to the downtime message sent on the 2nd, I miss-read the 
dates, and as long as cards behave, we shouldn't experience any downtime 
and if we do it shouldn't be long as I'll be home hopefully either on or 
just after the date of domain renewal to solve any issues.
Also, I do see we have pending messages, I'll take care of those in the 
morning when I'm at a keyboard.

[Audyssey] Xbox 1 for the blind.

Hello.

I am considering on getting a Xbox 1 game system.
Before I spend a few hundred dollars on a game system I need to know a 
few things about it.

I really appreciate any information that can be given.

1. What is the difference between the normal Xbox 1 and the Xbox 1 S?
2. Are there games that can be play by someone that is totally blind?
3. Can a totally blind person setup the Xbox 1 without sighted assistance?
4. How well does Narrator work on the Xbox 1?

Once again I really do appreciate any help that anyone can give to me 
about the Xbox 1!

[Audyssey] Pokemon Crystal with NVDA

Hi,
After finally having quite thouroughly completed Manamon, I decided 
Pokemon Crystal a go. I must say it works surprisingly well. it seems 
almost miraculous that one can play a game originally made for a fully 
sighted audience. It isn't glitch-free but very usable.



Anyway, having got a bit into the game I stumbled upon a puzzle with 
sliding panels. I don't know if there is a way to actually solve that 
puzzle using the accessible interface, but I won't think so. However, 
consulting a walkthrough I discovered it isn't necessary to solve the 
puzzle - it's just there for the sake of providing hints. So now I'm 
wondering, are there any more such stumble-blocks in the game that I 
should be aware of? Can you actually play through the entire game?

[Audyssey] trouble completing the neo example stage of adventure at c:

Hi there.
I'm trying to get through this stage, and I get stuck at the multiple 
platforms section. there are several platforms  spaced 2 paces apart, 
and then there's a huge gap at the end that contains a giant 
corrupted sector that I can't seem to make it across.
and Just to make things interesting, there's a giant teleporter 
chasing me. How do I overcome this?

The giant gap seems far too wide to cross.

[Audyssey] possible downtime.

This list may experience downtime for about a week as the domain comes 
up for renewal tomorrow and the card my registrar has on file is not a 
valid card, and paypal doesn't have the $15 in it immediately available 
to me. So I haven't forgotten I just need to get home to my actual

home to pick up his computer equipment and backups.  They wanted someone to

They said they were focusing on family, which was understandable, and that they 
would let me know whenever they decided to pack up his things for me to come 
and get.  I never received that follow-up call so I've never made the trip to 
get anything.

If I remember correctly, those games were written using powerbasic.  I 
don't know the status of that development platform nor do I know if it's 
possible to convert the source code to another basic dialect so those 
could be compiled.  I asked Jim Kitchen what he had used to compile 
those games while he was still alive and that's what I was told.  More 
specifically I remember him mentioning powerbasic 7.  Hope this helps.

Try disabling your internet connection when you open the program for the first 
time. I had to do this once because I kept getting a message that the developer 
certificate expired. Silly Apple and their trusted developer certificates and 
App Store limitations. Anyway, you should be able to run the game normally 
after going through this process. I think it saves a file somewhere once the 
game loads for the first time verifying that it works. Alternatively, you could 
try bringing up the context menu with VO shift M and choose open.

I use a pc and I would like a pc version so I will push for it but it 
will probably come out on android first, followed by ios as long as we 
can get things in, then pc.
One posibility is that the pc version will be steamed but I am also 
pushing it for a direct release to.
Steam is still an attractive platform especially for a hybred game 
platform its a pitty valve show no interest in their client for us.

From next update games will become paid. We would love to keep them for 
free, but probably you can imagine how expensive it is to create good 
quality games, and we devote our free time (including weekends and 
holidays) as well as private money to work on Audio Game Hub. I can 
guarantee you that the future income will be used to create more games!
After we will finish new games for the hub we will release the 
Whispering Tunnels - our best and biggest game ever!
Finally, it is very difficult to reach visually impaired community - 
please help us by spreading the word!

if it's still needed:
I am also a beginner, but found out how to do it still easier.
Spoiler Warning:
You do the users level until the first checkpoint. It isn't very hard at
all, if you kill everything which can be killed and get past the other
things. After the checkpoint, you can exit. You got bonuses which power up
the laser enough so that in the download program, one or two shots per virus
are enough. If you do it like this, you safe spending money in the shop.

The viruses will run towards the program no matter what, so what you'll want
to do is run to the right when the fight begins. Run to the right until the
steel data, then go to the left a few steps, then walk one step right. That
way you'll have a firing chance, though you'll have to be good at rapidfire
spacebar usage if you want to use the knife. You can always get 150 bytes,
head to the shop and get the
5000 reload for your laser's battery. Then the challenge becomes easy,
though note that if you want to get an achievement, I'd recommend trying
with the knife first. Hope that helps.

I haven't played with muds for a year or so now but if I remember 
correctly you can play other muds with the mush client which has a 
screen reader mode that works with Jaws and NvDA.

nearly all windows xp games I tried work fine on windows10. for alter 
aeon, you want the mush z alter aeon client. and that client is just for 
alter aeon and its sounds.

It really does not matter as I got what I wanted: leathercraft no
longer character binds. Druids can now carve on it, and potentially,
create more powerful pieces to sell/use. The player economy on Alter
Aeon is the worst I have ever seen in the nearly thirty years of
gaming I have done. There are a number of factors, some functional,
others structural, but this will help - just a little.

[Audyssey] Old Main Menu Shows

[Audyssey] need help with adventure at c

HI all
This is the same Nicol; only my address has changed.
I like adventure at C a lot.
Looks like lots of replay value.
Side scrolers is my favorite type of game.
I just need some advice please.
Which level would you recommend to start off with; which one  would you say
is the easiest?
I dived into the downloads level which is the first level that you get in
the in between levels area..
I managed the downloads  level until I got to the check point.

This program needs me to protect its .zip files.
But I cannot manage to destroy all the viruses.
I manage to destroy 1  or 2 but then the viruses gets too quick for me; they
access the .zip files.

why.
And then I lose alife.
Have you guys been able to get past the .zip files  download program?
