Hi Ron, There's absolutely nothing we can say without the actual errors you're getting, and if possible, some of the answers you're seeing. Can you be a bit more specific as to what you're looking for? I’m running wind ten anniversary home edition with a 64 bit processor. I’m having problems reinstalling my first dvd of the boxed version of my old Microsoft flight simulator program. Now I know that the diskettes are fine since it ran in win 7. But each time I go to install just disk one thus far, I get all kinds of errors. Now I know out on the what is it questions and or answers at Microsoft dot com there are all kinds of letters with pretty much the same issues. I just was wondering if I could throw this help request out to the list to see if a fellow blind person might be able to help me out with it. Many Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] For my fellow gamers.
Hi Jim, No, Flight Gear wasn't written in Basic. I believe the engine for Flight Gear is written in C which makes sense given that this is a real time simulator, and in a case like that you want the added speed and performance a language like C could offer. Plus Flight Gear is multiplatform and uses a lot of open source APIs like OpenGL for 3d graphics. However, that isn't to say someone couldn't get the jist of how the engine works and rewrite it in another language of choice. For instance, I might rewrite it in C# .NET and use all standard Windows UI controls to make the menus etc all accessible. Thanks to SlimDX I would have access to Direct3D, XAudio2, SAPI, and DirectInput. In other words I could read the original source, see how it works, and clone it in a language better suited for a blind friendly simulator if I were so inclined. Cheers! Hi Jim, Oh, i don't know.Writing the simulator itself could be hard, but then again there is a free open source clone of MS Flight Simulator called Flight Gear. My idea would be to use Flight Gear as the core of the game and just add accessibility features to it. the ability to have a co-pilot describe what he is seeing wouldn't be that hard provided someone sighted were able to describe the graphics at any given point of time so the developer could come up with a textual description. Re: [Audyssey] For my fellow gamers.
If you have the FSX program and the third party voice input program It's Your plane. There is a tour guide in the IYP program. I for one would love a fully accessable flight sim for we blind pilots that is on the same level flying field that the sighted goes through. I took a look at flight gear when I first started looking at FSX and how to make it accessable. So far, fsx is more blind friendly than flight gear. But of course I haven't taken a look at the flight gear project in a long long time either. For my fellow blind pilots. I know the two main people behind the fs ver 11 for 2012. I still don't know when it is scheduled to be released for 2012. But as a fellow blind gamer, I have been giving them several recommendation, suggestions and the like on how to make it blind friendly and the other add on programs bly friendly as well. If my fellow blind pilots have anything that I haven't thought of as a blind pilot love to be. Please ship the suggestion this way and I'l make sure it gets sent. I can't promise that it will be in the new sim, but I will ship it. Any one out on the list that knows code that I can pass along their contact info to help write code to make fs blind friendly? Ship that to me as well and I promise I'll get it to the correct person and hopefully they'll get back to you. Here's hoping everyone had a nice Christmas yesterday and here's to the new year. I received on present watching the steeler win on Christmas eve. Now if we could onlyu win our last game agains Cleveland on New Years day and Baltimore will loose their last game letting us win the devision. SMILES. Re: [Audyssey] For my fellow gamers.
Hi, Yes, while something like a standard flight sim might be considered boring by some there are certainly aspects that make them interesting to play. Besides the real world challenges you mentioned below like real life weather conditions a lot of sighted players enjoy the background scenery and visual effects offered by Microsoft Flight Simulator. While no spoken feedback can quite convey the same thing as seeing it I could see an accessible flight sim have a co-pilot that ocationally describes where you are and what is on the ground. Attention, ladies and gentlemen, if you look off to the right you can see the Statue of Liberty come into view as we make our way to John F. Kenidy Airport. She stands 100 feet tall, and is still holding the torch of freedom up high for all to see. Something like that would make a flight simulator interesting and add some of the feedback sighted pilots see when flying FSX and other flight simulators. It merely means the developer has to get creative and attempt to convert the visual into something accessible we can enjoy as well. I personally don't think it would be boring if a game had such a feature as my co-pilot could describe things as we passed them in flight. toss in a few historical facts or trivia as well and the game might even be educational too. Re: [Audyssey] For my fellow gamers.
Hi Dark, I agree about Puppy 1. I'd definitely class Puppy 1 as an arcade game as it doesn't attempt to simulate flight in any way shape or form. No realistic physics modeling, 3d airial combat, etc It is rather simplistic in terms of flying games because the plane moves straight ahead, without any ability to turn, bank, roll, whatever. You can pan left or right, ascend, or descend and that's pretty much it. That, however, doesn't mean the game isn't fun, but its not realistic enough to be classed as a sim in my book. Cheers! Glad you like Tdv, I was involved with voice acting there as you know, and had a lot of fun doing it. I also do know a lot of work went into the game. As to Puppy1, I'm afraidd I don't personally class that as a flight sim, sinse it's based on racking up score, and the flying itself is fairly simple, which is indeed why in the audiogames.net db it's listed as arcade games and even if we have a simulation games catagory probably will stay as an arcade game. not a cryticism, Puppy1 is often a game I stick on for a quick blast, just an opinion on the games' genre. Hi Thomas, Yes, Puppy 1 is a game and not a flight simulation program. The only thing that is real about it is that all of the planes and each bullet do have an x, y and z coordinate that are up dated about 20 times per second. If I could write a real flight simulation program I would want to use real longitude, latitude and altitude coordinates. You know like maybe start out at the correct longitude, latitude and altitude coordinates of the Cleveland Hopkins International airport. Then be able to fly to and land at Burk Lakefront airport. And then maybe fly to the Cuyahauga airport. And then back to the Cleveland Hopkins International airport. But to fly say from the Cleveland Hopkins International airport to say L.A.X. would just be boring. One would just take off, gain altitude, set a heading and let the plane fly for hours and hours, until you got near L.A.X. I did really enjoy the Microsoft flight simulation program when I still had a tiny bit of sight. It even allowed me to set longitude, latitude and altitude coordinates. And soon I was flying around the Brooklyn bridge, the Statue of Liberty and even the Twin Towers. BTW My Dad's life long hobby was building and flying remote control gas powered model airplanes. Most were built from kits that you buy, but he did at one point start designing and building his own planes. The first was a biplane and was named Puppy 1. Puppy 2 was also a biplane, but puppy 3 was not. I myself have always been more into gas or electric powered remote control cars, trucks and all terrain vehicles. I have ten of them. hi Jim. that's actually something I like in Zero sight. No, flights don't take hours, but you set the heading and sometimes have to wait a longer period of time than in most games, a good five minutes or so on some occasions before you get to where your going, however even whilst your doing that, you have to stay alert in case you run into any nasties. Re: [Audyssey] For my fellow gamers.
Ah yes, I read about this a few weeks ago. It seems like a neat idea but I personally think it has a ways to go before it would be practical. It is terribly inefficient at the moment since it takes an enormous amount of 3d data from the kinect but only translates that into 5 feedback points. It is on the right track though. --- On Wed, 3/23/11, Ron Kolesar kolesar16...@roadrunner.com wrote: From: Ron Kolesar kolesar16...@roadrunner.com Subject: [Audyssey] For my fellow gamers. To: Audyssey gamers@audyssey.org Date: Wednesday, March 23, 2011, 6:28 PM For my fellow blind gamers and flight simulator friends. Please read the info that is down below. I would like to know if we might be able to use this new technology with our hand to ear games and or to the flight simulators to bring thim to life. We also probably could use it with the wii interface to make it more blind friendly. Here's to maybe to bring the virtual reality games into the world of blind friendly. Will deeply appreciate any feedback on this since I need to find a new USB controller that will work with the H to E games and TDV but also work in the world of windows seven and the world of the 64 bit processor world. Now the info is down below. You all now know as much as I do on the unit. Just thought I'd share. Ron Kinect Video game controller acts as sensor in mobility system for blind The Microsoft Kinect (TM) video game controller is everywhere. I saw a kid playing a video game with one at Sam's club yesterday, and was impressed at how the avatar on the screen followed the kid's movements as he stood in front of the Kinect console. Obviously this nifty device is inspiring some new ideas, because a grad student project at Universität Konstanz in Germany has turned out a really cool wearable navigation system for the blind. The Kinect sits atop a hard-hat (extra dorky looking, but it's good because it gets the sensor up high and out of the way.) It is connected to a fabric belt with several vibrators that are probably used to indicate proximity to a wall or solid object, and there is an audible voice indicating navigational moves. It's sort of complicated to explain but the YouTube video shows it pretty well and the Slashgear article link I'm including does an even better job. Kinect is a trademark of Microsoft. mailto: wa0...@arrl.net Link to Slash gear article: http://www.slashgear.com/kinect-bringing-sight-to-the-blind-sorta-16140417/ Ron Kolesar -Inline Attachment Follows- --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org.
