2009-09-18 Thread dark

Hello tom.

While I understand the various reasons behind your annoyence with licensing
and other issues, these weren't the reasons given by the lead developer of
Dragonslayer.

I actually had several conversations with him, sinse I felt he had a lot of
enthusiasm, and indeed potentially good ideas of implementing interesting
games even if he was just learning his craft, - pluss he was a genuinely
nice chap to talk to.

After this great display of enthusiasm though, he literally just dropped off
the map, and I don't just mean in terms of programming I mean in terms of
the games community in general.

He no longer posted on the forum, nor indeed when i E-mailed him did he
answer.

At a later date, another friend of mine happened to run across him on Skype,
and asked why, to which he dismissively replied that now he "had a life" so
wasn't bothered about accessible games anymore.

the fact that one can be interested in computer games and indeed have a
life, interests, and friends outside them had planely not occurred to him at
all.

while he on average showed a mature atitude, this sounded to me more a case
of teenaged anxt than anything else, - he certainly never voiced the
concerns your raising.

Hi Dark,
Being a game developer myself I think I can understand the lead
developer's reasons well enough. It is pretty easy to get disenchanted and
out right discouraged when creating audio games. I'm obviously a lot older
and more seasoned than the lead developer for Dragon Slayer Games was, but
even I feel like hanging it up from time to time. Although, my major gripe
has to do with licensing issues.

When I first started writing accessible games I imagined writing games
like those I use to play in the good old days when I still could see. I
figured as the common person does that I would be able to make my own
versions of Double Dragon, Castlevania, Tomb Raider, Star Wars, whatever,
and the mainstream companies would leave me alone. No such luck. i found
out the hard way when I got threatened with a law suit over Montezuma's
Revenge, and now i feel pretty bitter about that. Especially, considering
the fact that current laws grants these companies nearly godlike control
over their copyrights, trade marks, and creations regardless of
accessibility concerns. That alone killed many of my hopes and dreams for
creating audio games.

Then, there is the technical aspects to deal with. If a developer wants to
specifically program for Windows the sky is the limit. However, over the
passed couple of years I have joined the ranks of blind computer users
that use alternative operating systems such as Linux and Mac OS.
This makes writing games tricky because it is hard to find any programming
API, specification, that is supported on Mac, Linux, and Windows. There
are some good ones out there like the FMOD Audio API, but it isn't free
for commercial developers. Licensing can be steep, and a certain
percentage of all sales will have to go into licensing the API. This isn't
necessarily an acceptable situation given USA Games doesn't make all that
much off our games to begin with. Basically, enough just to properly
license, sounds, music, and perhaps an API like FMOD if we can afford it.

Finally, after all that there are complete jerks out there that will
happily crack and redistribute the game to every disreputable blind person
on the planet. To them it doesn't matter how long it took to create the
game, how much it cost the developer to license this or that, and so on.
All of that means nothing to them. Instead the game is something they can
hack, crack, and pass around like bubble gum cards.

So, bottom line, there is a lot a developer can get disenchanted about. It
is hard work for very little financial gain, and sometimes little
recognition. I do it because I generally like the work despite the
troubles, bologna, and other crap I have to put up with.

Cheers!

[Audyssey] vip question with triggers and back sound

2009-09-18 Thread Kellie and my lovable Lady J.

Hey all,
I remember not that long ago someone posted a file of them playing a mud
with all the sound effects and music background in the game. Was the mud
cyber punk? I can't remember who it was, but I was wondering, is it possible
for me to get the set file so I can look at the scripting you did in order
to get some of the sound effects accomplished? Not for the same mud, but if
I can see how someone used it in real life I may get ideas.
I can do basic triggers. But, I am trying to have sounds loop in the
backgroun for ambiance. an example is when I am on my ship in Materia
magica. I have a loop I want to use for ocean noises but I cna't seem to
figure out how to write ir properly so that it works. Well, I get it to
start but I cna't get it to shut off when I want too. So again, I was hoping
that maybe if I looked at another script I may be able to get ideas.

I have read the help file in vip mud for scripting and it left me confused.
If anyone could help me out I would greatly appreciate it. I am really
trying to bring my game to life and I am sort of getting there but... still
have a long way to go.

Thanks so much in advance.

Re: [Audyssey] dragon slayers games

2009-09-18 Thread Josh
Hi thomas,

Is it possible that there is some kind of conspiracy goingon with copyright
laws that gives companies godLike control over their so-called intellectual
property? I went to hp's site the other day and read about their computers. It
says they got windows genuine advantage, norton security norton anti-virus,
antispyware all this stuff on them. Sure the computers gotta have fast
processors, because you're using a lot of that power to make up for the
slowing-down that antivirus and other such software does. When will the average
consumer learn that Mac and Linux are more secure? And also google Chrome OS
running on Linux rumored to be being created for release sometime next year?
When will the consumer get tired of the krap, the $1200 for Jaws and
Window-eyes and say, I've had it? As soon as I can I'm getting a MacBook
putting windows xp on it and will only use windows for games that's really
about it. Otherwise I'll use the Mac OS. You know after a fresh install of
windows xp things load lots faster? then put your antivirus and antispyware and
securitty software on there and things run half or less than half as fast
because everything's being scanned. But if you remove the security software you
risk a total breakdown. When will the consumers learn macs and Linux are
better? I'm not talking about whether one chooses the command line or the gui
that's notthe issue. The issue is the OS viruses and security. If we wouldn't
have to worry about that games would...
run faster
load faster
not crash with errors or if they did hardly ever if at all.

I agree that programmers gotta make money. But in my opinion putting such tight
restrictions and making such tight tight tight copyright laws actually stifles
an artists creativity. That's what you game programmers are part artist,
computer scientist, and programmer writing commands to tell the computer what
to do. And your creativity as an artist is being stifled by very restrictive
copyright laws and its sighted people too. when will the consumers get a clue,
wake up, and say I've had it! I'm not putting up with thiss anymore! Some arre
doing it, but very few, serotek and mozilla and Ubuntu. Why so many choices
with screen readers? because they don't all do the same thing. Now what if ms
built a powerful screen reader rightinto windows itself? A screen reader that
combined the strengths of all our current windows screen readers and our
favorite voices? We need accessibility built-in, not as an afterthought and
bolted on-top.

2009-09-18 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi, Dark.

I realize that. My actual point was to point out that while programming
accessible games is often rewarding it also can be disenchanting once
you discover all the legal and technical entanglements that goes with
the job. I'm not sure what the lead developers reasons were, but I know
how I feel about the issues I mentioned earlier. Which I braught them up
as an example of the kinds of problems we face as audio game developers.

As far as the developers comments about "he now had a life" I agree this
sounds more like teenaged anxt than anything else. I program and play
accessible games, but I do have a life outside of it. I'm not sure where
he is coming from, but maybe he felt it took up too much of his time.
Its hard to say without him giving his reasons.

Smile.

grants these companies nearly godlike control over their copyrights,
trade marks, and creations regardless of accessibility concerns. That
alone killed many of my hopes and dreams for creating audio games.

Then, there is the technical aspects to deal with. If a developer
wants to specifically program for Windows the sky is the limit.
However, over the passed couple of years I have joined the ranks of
blind computer users that use alternative operating systems such as
Linux and Mac OS.
This makes writing games tricky because it is hard to find any
programming API, specification, that is supported on Mac, Linux, and
Windows. There are some good ones out there like the FMOD Audio API,
but it isn't free for commercial developers. Licensing can be steep,
and a certain percentage of all sales will have to go into licensing
the API. This isn't necessarily an acceptable situation given USA
Games doesn't make all that much off our games to begin with.
Basically, enough just to properly license, sounds, music, and
perhaps an API like FMOD if we can afford it.

Finally, after all that there are complete jerks out there that will
happily crack and redistribute the game to every disreputable blind
person on the planet. To them it doesn't matter how long it took to
create the game, how much it cost the developer to license this or
that, and so on. All of that means nothing to them. Instead the game
is something they can hack, crack, and pass around like bubble gum
cards.

So, bottom line, there is a lot a developer can get disenchanted
about. It is hard work for very little financial gain, and sometimes
little recognition. I do it because I generally like the work despite
the troubles, bologna, and other crap I have to put up with.

Cheers!

Hi Michael,
I just listened to some of your game zone show and it certainly has
potential. I live in Georgia too by the way, grin.
The only real problem I had with the show was sound quality. I am not sure
if that is something at your end that can be improved, or if it is a problem
with my end meaning the phone and or service I use. Unfortunatley, It was
hard to understand, and I would have listened longer but for that one
problem.

[Audyssey] Copyright Problems was dragon slayers games

2009-09-18 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi, Josh.

Josh wrote:

Is it possible that there is some kind of conspiracy going on with
copyright laws that gives companies godlike control over their so-called
intellectual

property?

My response:

No, that's just the way it is. Since we live in a capitalist society,
where everyone maintains the right to hold private property, the
copyright laws are there to protect companies intellectual and material
rights to their products, ideas, and services. That said, there are
limits on how much control companies and individuals has over a certain
copyright, and often this is where the courts get involved to draw those
boundaries.

For example, the case, Intel VS AMD, regarding the 586 processor. In
that case Intel sued AMD for releasing a 586 processor, and Intel
maintained they had full rights to the 586 trade mark. The Supreme Court
made a ruling that a number could not be copyrighted, and a trade mark
has to be a unique product name of a specific design. After that Intel
released their 586 line as the Pentium processor and AMD later released
their Athelon series of processors. Both the Pentium and Athelon names
are true trade marks where a name like 586 is not.

Anyway, even though there are limits on copyrights and trade marks the
law more often as not comes down on the side of the company or
individual who comes up with a product or idea first. Issues like
accessibility were not included in the original copyright laws, and
therefore have had to be fought for in the courts every step of the way.
Laws like Public Law 9-22, which gives us the right in the U.S.A. to get
written materials in an accessible format, was necessary to force
publishers into allowing books, magazines, etc to be produced in
accessible formats. Otherwise without Public Law 9-22 publishers could
sue American Printing House, Bookshare, Recordings for the Blind, etc
for reproducing printed materials in braille, audio, or daisy format
without written permission from the publisher. It is, in fact, areas
like this where the copyright laws have obstructed the needs of the
blind and others with physical disabilities.

When it comes to certain media like games we really got the short end of
the stick. Unlike books most people see games as purely entertainment,
they are a non-essential item, and therefore there aren't currently many
people out there pushing for their rights to accessible games. There
are, unfortunately, more important issues like making our money
accessible by feel rather than having to purchase and use a money
reader. Being able to tell the difference between a $10 bill and a $1
bill is imho much more important in the long run than weather or not the
latest video game is accessible or not.

The only way I can see to solve this problem is if our government would
either pass a law to enforce equal accessibility for movies, books,
games, etc forcing all publishers and companies to include accessibility
from the start, or create a more generalized Public Law 9-22 that allows
third-party organizations to freely create accessible versions of books,
movies, or games in an accessible format. Unfortunately, neither of
these are very likely given our current laws and the publics general
indifference to accessibility rights and issues. Not to mention the
very companies who lines this or that candidates pockets aren't going to
approve of either of those suggestions, and you can bet they will put
the squeeze on anyone who tries to sponsor a bill like that.

[Audyssey] Consumers and alternatives was dragon slayers games

2009-09-18 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi, Josh.

Josh wrote:
When will the average consumer learn that Mac and Linux are more secure?

My response:
That's a good question, and one I can't answer. I need a crystal ball
for that one.

Although, I can say this. In my years working with the public, trouble
shooting their computers, etc I generally find security isn't often at
the top of their list of requirements. The average John and Jane out
there only care about being able to send and exchange e-mails with their
friends and family, do some instant messenging, browse the net for that
special recipe, play a few games, and maybe a few other odd tasks. They
usually don't worry about system security, or know how to make their
computers more safe and secure.

I've met plenty of people who don't even update their anti-virus
software regularly, because they were never told they needed too. They
just assumed since it was installed and running they were safe. I've met
several people who run XP as administrator even though Microsoft warns
end users not to do it on a regular basis. Most people do it unaware or
holy innocent of the damage that could happen as a result of running as
administrator. Bottom line, your average consumer really doesn't
understand computer security well, and regardless of the operating
system being used half of the problem is the operator's own knowledge
about how to secure his/her computer effectively.

For example, you say that Mac and Linux is more secure than Windows.
Generally speaking that is absolutely true, but it isn't invincible. I
can think of several ways in which a poor operator can weaken the
operating system's security without even thinking about it such as using
weak passwords, logging on as root, forgetting to password protect his
or her system, enabling automatic login on startup, and so on. These are
all common problems we techs see on Mac, Linux, and Windows and our
average consumers have picked up some rather bad security habits and
practices that carry over from operating system to operating system. Bad
operator equals bad security too.

Here is a simple example. A couple years ago my wife and I did some
house sitting for her parents, and she decided she wanted to browse the
internet. When she started her dad's computer up it was password
protected. Well, seeing as her dad is a minister we decided to try the
obvious. We typed Jesus into the password box, and sure enough we logged
right on. Point being if we could crack it with one guess his password
was far too simple, easy, and was very weak. People do stupid stuff like
that all the time holy unaware of how easy their security can be
compromised by a determined hacker, or a lucky guess as was our case.

Josh wrote:
You know after a fresh install of windows xp things load lots faster?
then put your anti-virus and anti-spyware and security software
on there and things run half or less than half as fast because every
thing's being scanned. But if you remove the security software you risk
a total breakdown.

My response:
Yes, I know that. That is one of my major gripes with Windows. As long
as you don't plan to use Windows for the internet you don't need as much
security software, but the average user does thus they need the entire
range of security software. I know as well as anyone having a screen
reader, anti-virus program, spam blockers, firewall, etc all running in
the background eats into memory and CPU performance.

Josh wrote:
When will the consumer get tired of the crap, the $1200 for Jaws and
Window-eyes and

say, I've had it?

My response:
Well, there is more to it than just security or the cost of the software
to consider here. Most of it comes down to availability and
compatibility issues. Most of the people in the world use Windows, own
Windows, so most of the hardware and software out there is designed for
Windows. Most programmers are taught to program for Windows, most
technical manuals and guides are for Windows, and the list goes on and
on. Converting the consumer base over to something else like Mac OS or
Linux is a massive undertaking that can't be done over night if at all.

First of all, you have this huge catalog of Windows software that
includes things like games, financial programs, imaging software, you
name it that won't run on anything else but Windows computers. So
assuming user x decides to install and run Linux the first major problem
he/she will have is trying to locate software that compares to what
he/she already owns and likes. Speaking from experience it is hard to
find something that really compares to Sound Forge, Adobe Photo Shop,
the DirectX API, Quicken, etc. Sure their is Audacity, Gimp, and GNU
Cash, that can serve as alternatives they still aren't 100% equal to
their Windows counterparts. That is only the beginning of problems.

Second of all, you have hardware issues. Some companies are hell bent
on producing Windows only hardware, and or ship onl

Re: [Audyssey] dragonSlayers games

2009-09-18 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Jim,
Yeah, I'm not really in it for the money either. I mainly started
writing games purely for the fun of it too. However, arguing with
companies over copyrights has taken a good deal of fun out of it.

However, if I were to go straight freeware or open source I could
probably save myself a lot of grief. As I have said many times before on
list a developer is more likely to get sued or get attention when or if
he or she tries to market a product commercially. Since all of your
games are totally free Hazbro isn't likely to send you a letter to yank
Monopoly off your site because it would cost them more to lidigate the
issue than they would get out of suing you, and they know it.

Jim Kitchen wrote:

Hi Thomas,

And for me it is the love of the idea I have for the game that I am
developing and the wanting to play it. Pretty sure that I would want
to hang it up if say I was tied into producing games that I was not
really in love with. So for me playing the finished game and the fun
of figuring out the code is the fun of it all. Of course it has been
very very rewarding hearing from those who enjoy the games for all
these years.

I will tell how it came to be that my mom has softened her view about sod.
me and a friend of mine were having a pizza at a restaurant yesterday
evening and we talked about games.
I told this friend about the audio games I am playing, I described pipe2 to
him in detail. and he told me about his games.
He told me that he is currently playing mainstream games made for the pc.
He once had the x box but it was too expensive.
Each game on the x box costs 500 south african rand.
But this friend told me about ashooting game that he bought himself for his
pc, called unreal tournament where there is a lot of shooting involved.
The game consist of different missions/tasks but the main objective is
fighting.
So I asked him whether his dad is ok with the game he is playing as he stays
with his family and they are also Jehovah witnesses, he told me yes.
So today I spoke to my mom about this friend's game, telling her his dad
does not have a problem with him playhing it. and she told me that each
person must decide according to his conscience.
So I described shades of doom to my mom in the language of the man on the
street.
I told my mom that in shades of doom I do not kill people, I kill monsters
similar to prehistoric monsters such as dinosaurs.
I told her about the experiment that went wrong and that my mission is to
collect wafers to shut down the experiment and to collect the wafers I have
to kill creatures.
She asked if there is blood in the sod game and I answered no.
So eventually she agreed that its not harmfull to me.
I will try to translate her words into English.
"now I agree a game of erasing monsters is not that bad."
So now I can freelly play shades of doom without anybody asking me what I am
playing if they see the title on my screen.
Because I share my flat with a couple, my mom's friends, and they care for
me such as doing the cooking.
So if they have any questions, I will just explain to them how I have
explained to my mom and that its ok with her for me to play sod.

And I can also now play sarah soon even though my mom and her friends hates
magic games . so soon I can also now freely play sarah without them watching

Hi Allison,
He is an adult, but age really isn't the issue here. Apparently from
what I gather regardless of his age his mother tries to control him,
boss him around, and tell him what to do. Especially, when a game, book,
or something offends her religious views.

For most of us we move away from home, get a job, and when a parent or
in-laws try to tell us what to do we can tell them "bite me" and that
will be the end of it. I guess he still lives with or near enough to his
mother that she still has a controlling influence on his life so telling
her to "go jump in a river" isn't feasible.

Re: [Audyssey] dragonSlayers games

2009-09-18 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Thomas,

Yes, producing free games definitely allows a certain amount of copyright
freedom etc. Like when I was breaking bread with one of the writers from the
Simpson's and mentioned that Homer was in just about every one of my games, he
was about to say something about it because the Simpson's have always been
strict on copyright issues, until I mentioned that all of my games are totally
free. Then he and his wife started asking me questions about How I make my
games and how they do the audio described TV show of The Simpson's.

BTW It was weird that today on the history channel I learned that President
Abraham Lincoln's effigy was done by Matthew Simpson in Springfield Illinois.
And of course the writers never realized that there is actually a Shelbyville
just north of Springfield Illinois.

Re: [Audyssey] dragon slayers games

2009-09-18 Thread shaun everiss
well its not like we have the choice mate.
However its why when anyone tries to get a computer I always say avoid package
deals like the plague.
I also think one should not pay for security.
spybot sd avg, and spywareblaster are all the average jo needs, maybe if you
are paranoid zone alarm, and a well adjusted router or other firewall.
I also no longer will go for mother bumpkin's security.
In other words the best aint always the best.
saying that if nod32 was not so expensive like 60 for each system I'd get the
smart security package.
Even though I don't go for packaged stuff in general if I can get software
packages with stuff I want for one lump price I am more likely to go with it
rather than single software titles.
On the subject of jaws, and other readers, I wouldn't buy it myself.
if I needed something then I'd apply to a work agency or training org or
something like that if I needed it for a spaciffic purpose.
I wouldn't just grab it just because.
In this reguard though unless you need to upgrade things all the time ie you
are working then its no big issue.
Compared to say a mac costing 1200 the pc can be got for about 600 and a laptop
with base settings can be got for 1000 bucks.
As supposed to what it used to cost.
And as long as you could have a tech to load the packages for you then fine.
I don't aggree with the fact that you should have all the limits on licences
for updates, etc which is why I use avg.
Now going back to your message if you want to find avg at a shop then you are
probably out of luck.
There are security updates for all oses, saying systems are more secure is a
myth, no os is fully secure.
while its true macs get less updates than windows they do.
There are viruses that can effect macs and linux to.
Also right now I aggree with you in principal but all things right now are
geared to windows, all or most things run on windows.
If you get something its in windows.
If you just want linux then live in india!
This is not being racest or anything, in india linux is the main os aparently
says one of my friends.
I know what you mean though.
I manage several machines.
3 at home, a laptop, and 2 desktops here and one system that is remotely
managed.
Ie I have to either go to it or have it brought here.
So its not like I could rely on payed for software.
On that note not all is lost.
Its possible without cracking, pirating, etc to have a reasonable pc existance.
though you still will have to get windows ofcause ms is starting to use the
open xml format and also odf support is in the latest office service pack.
Some places have started using openoffice.
Linux while still a programmer's and server admin's system is getting more
usable, not as usable as its windows counterpart but its getting better.
I should also mention the down side to going totally opensource however.
There is no official tech support.
I know that I pay for my stuff and or its got for me, reguardless I know that I
will get some free or all free support, I have payed for said software and
therefore the company needs to or rather has to previde support, free or
otherwise and service.
In opensource if something really goes then you are on your own.
On that note when or if you buy a package who says you need to use their stuff.
When ever I get a packaged system, ie a laptop or something, I always reformat.
even if it works, I reformat.
I then don't install or remove is recovery cds use it all stuff I don't need or
want.
issue solved.
ie my laptop came with norton security 2006 I did not install it I did not use
it!
And it came with other config things.
I got rid of everything I didn't want and thats all.
True I'd have liked to not have those at all but beggers can't be choosers.
On that note you can always try to bargin, ie ask them what all the stuff came
with.
You could ask if you could just not get all the stuff you didn't want or if you
could substatute stuff with other stuff.
or if you could just remove that stuff and get a cheaper price.
They can always say no but mostly they actually will respect what the consumer
wants.
There however are places for package deals.
ie, the novis user that has no idea should get a package deal.
I encourage the first system anyone gets unless he knows what he wants to be a
package deal.
as you get used to the net you can customise things.
all systems up till the stuff we got in 2001 were package deals.
in 2003 we got our first customised system and in 2008 last year we got our
second.
next year I plan to upgrade the other 2003 system with another customised
system.
its taken me the last few years from 1997 till now to find out what config I
like, the level of security I want and the fact I don't want to change my
config every 2 seconds and that it works well for me.
My security config may be a bit on the low side but I have stuff that even at
full level if I choose to use it I won't have to touch or anything.
all updates are free, or almost so, and there

Re: [Audyssey] dragon slayers games

2009-09-18 Thread shaun everiss
as an add on to your message I aggree with you in that reguard to.
also people have said enough is enough.
Currently its called lets crack the software.
Seriously though josh I don't think there are enough of us to actually make a
difference.
I aggree with every point you just put up so do others.
there are opensource things all the time but cash needs to be earned and all
that.
and there are disadvantages to totally free things to since it always ends up
in more cash.
yes we would do if we did not have viruses in general.
And mostly the security software has to guard against the dumb consumer like
most non computer savi are.
I do admit though that people can be to restrictive sometimes.
and some prices can be a bit successive.
Hmm would be good if everything came accessible out the box wouldn't it.
as I said before there is not enough of us to actually push the bounderies.
As I said, you can get stuff alegally so psudo free for you.
However to actually get this done ie have it actually legal and all that we
would need everyone like half the world or something to shift over to a
particular thing and force the big corps to change.
Its not happened yet, it may do at some stage soon but not yet.
And ofcause there are businesses that mostly get this stuff right now, the
average jo was probably an afterthought to.
Sad isn't it?

If you are not a Jehovah's Witness, and you are an adult, your wish should
be your command, so to speak, as long as there is no harm in your choices,
particularly when it comes to playing computer games. The fact that you can
now play SOD is very good news.

I am 31.
My mom never think that I am a child, its because she is a Jehovah
witness.

It all goes about religion, certain games like violence and magic is
forbidden for the Jehovah witnesses and my mom tried for many years to
force me into the Jehovah witness religion.

Re: [Audyssey] good news: shades of doom

2009-09-18 Thread Robert Montowski

Hello there,
I came into this thread a bit late...so I had to go back and read alot of
old messages to get the feel for what is going on here.

My experience to some of what is being discussed goes like this:
I used to live with a girlfriend in my house.
I also played shades of doom.
she is a born again christian as am I.
she was a bit miffed I was playing this shooting game.
here is how I settled the matter.
As I am totally blind..I turned my monitor off.
even if she walks by my open door, she will not know what I am doing.
as many of these games are very specific about what direction a sound comes
at you from, I got a very nice pair of headphones to wear when I play any
game.
so once again, even when she is standing in my room talking to me..she has
no idea what I am doing unless I have the volume on the head phones turned
way up high.

I consider this leveling the playfield.
when she is on her computer I have no idea what she is doing as she turns
her speakers off.
I can't see or hear what she is doing and she can't see or hear what I am
doing.

No problem here...grin.
religion and computer games can co-exist.
Robert

Re: [Audyssey] dragon slayers games

2009-09-18 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Shaun,

Shaun wrote:
Linux while still a programmer's and server admin's system is getting
more usable, not as usable as its windows counterpart but its getting
better.

My response:
I might add here that a lot depends on what distribution of Linux a
person decides to use. Some distributions like Ubuntu are very user
friendly, pretty decent, and other's like Rock Linux are pretty crappy.
One of the major problems new Linux users have is that they don't know
which Linux distributions are good, user friendly, have technical
support, etc and which ones are geekware. Ubuntu is a very good
commercial release of Linux where something like Rock Linux is a
complete do it yourself operating system.

Shaun wrote:
There is no official tech support.

My response:
Again this totally depends on the Linux developer in question. Most of
the major distributions like Ubuntu, Suse, Mandriva, etc offer tech
support services. It is the small one man bands like Rock Linux that
don't offer much in the way of documentation or technical support.

In addition to paid tech support some distributions like Ubuntu have a
wiki, downloadable manuals, mailing lists, and so on. So a person isn't
totally left hanging in the wind. You just need to know where to find
the help you are looking for.

Shaun wrote:
Compared to say a mac costing 1200 the pc can be got for about 600 and a
laptop with base settings can be got for 1000 bucks.

My response:
Actually I picked up a Compaq laptop, brand new, over a year ago for
under 600 here in the U.SA. so Windows laptops are practically dirt
cheap now days.

That said, there is a reason Mac's are so expensive. As I pointed out to
Josh off list Mac's generally use top of the line hardware. The combo of
quality hardware and software is one of the reasons Mac's out perform
Windows PCs. However, the cost of a Mac verses a Windows PC is another
reason people don't buy them. If it costs too much they won't or can't
pay for it.

Shaun wrote:
If you just want linux then live in india!
This is not being racest or anything, in india linux is the main os
apparently says one of my friends.

My response:
That's correct. Linux has become quite popular in India as well as
several other low income areas of the world. The reason for this is
rather obvious.

Since Microsoft only deals in American dollars the price of their
flagship products like Office, Windows, MS Money, you name it is
prohibitively expensive to own and operate in those countries. One
person told me if he were to go out and buy Windows XP on his own based
on his wages it would cost him an entire years income to purchase it.
That's absolutely an unacceptable price for a piece of software.
Therefore Linux is his only real option unless he is willing to crack
Windows and use it illegally.

Hi all
I am pleased to announce that my mom has at last agreed that shades of
doom

is ok for me to play.
She has tried to forbid me for years to play sod as she felt its sheer
violence.
I will tell how it came to be that my mom has softened her view about sod.
me and a friend of mine were having a pizza at a restaurant yesterday
evening and we talked about games.
I told this friend about the audio games I am playing, I described pipe2
to

him in detail. and he told me about his games.
He told me that he is currently playing mainstream games made for the pc.
He once had the x box but it was too expensive.
Each game on the x box costs 500 south african rand.
But this friend told me about ashooting game that he bought himself for
his

pc, called unreal tournament where there is a lot of shooting involved.
The game consist of different missions/tasks but the main objective is
fighting.
So I asked him whether his dad is ok with the game he is playing as he
stays

with his family and they are also Jehovah witnesses, he told me yes.
I told her about the experiment that went wrong and that my mission is to
collect wafers to shut down the experiment and to collect the wafers I
have

to kill creatures.
She asked if there is blood in the sod game and I answered no.
So eventually she agreed that its not harmfull to me.
I will try to translate her words into English.
"now I agree a game of erasing monsters is not that bad."
So now I can freelly play shades of doom without anybody asking me what I
am

playing if they see the title on my screen.
Because I share my flat with a couple, my mom's friends, and they care for
me such as doing the cooking.
So if they have any questions, I will just explain to them how I have
explained to my mom and that its ok with her for me to play sod.
Spoiler
space
And I can also now play sarah soon even though my mom and her friends
hates
magic games . so soon I can also now freely play sarah without them
watching

the screen due to the fact that phil will change the screen name to only
sarah instead of sarah and the castle of witchcraft and wizardry in his
coming update.
