   Hi all,
Haven't been on the list for a while but I thought this might be
interesting to anyone on the list who either has played this game before,
or was thinking that it might (hopefully) make a decent audio game of some
   kind.

Below is the send space link to the rules for an old classic game called
   Dungeon! by TSR.
Essentially up to six layers use heros to wander around a dungeon,
fighting monsters and gathering treasure and magic items. The rules
include two versions of the game, the basic and expert. In the basic
everyone is the same, and requires 20,000 gp to win the game.
In the expert version, the players choose between warrior, wizard, thief,
paladin, dwarf and elf. Each has it's own pros and cons and these may also
ambush each other, or work cooperatively to fight strong monsters.

My hope is that someone would read thru the rules and discover that it
can be made into an audio game.

The link for downloading the .rtf file is below.

Subject: [Audyssey] Redistributing RPG Source Books

  Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone knows where we stand legally on
redistributing roll playing game source books in accessible format.
The reason I ask is because I have a number of source books for the
Star Wars roll playing game I'm in the process of converting to text
or html. Once I'm done scanning and editing the source books I'd like
to redistribute them to other blind gamers, but am not clear where I
stand legally. I could submit them to Bookshare.org to have them
converted to Daisy format, which would be one way of legally
redistributing them, but most of the gamers here live outside the US
so don't qualify for Bookshare. Therefore while submitting the scanned
copies to Bookshare would be the legal thing to do it defeats the
purpose of trying to redistribute them to other blind gamers here who
might wish to join me in getting a weekly Star Wars roll playing game
going similar to what Phil and others do with Dungeons and Dragons.
So what i've been thinking of doing is zipping them and hosting them
on the USA Games website, but I believe in order to legally distribute
them they have to be in some specific accessibility format like Dasy
and can't be in an all purpose format like text or html which I feel
is more accessible than Daisy. Can anyone shed any light on this?

  Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] Redistributing RPG Source Books

2012-06-14 Thread Allan Thompson
I think I have to agree with you Dark. I think there should be accessible
formats for the blind, especially print stuff including rpg books. Bookshare
does a good job of it, so I don't see why wotc couldn't do something similar
if it is so nervous about electronic format.
My two cents I suppose.

  Hi Tom.

personally I'm of the opinion that after 20 years of trying to get
accessible rp books, fantasy literature etc and being repeatedly stone
walled on the issue, copywrite can kiss my rear end!
In around the year 2000 I bought a cd which contained word documents of all
the old DD 2nd edition books in order to start tabletop rping, however of
course once I started i found that 3rd edition had replaced 2nd. I then
wrote a letter to wizards of the coast asking if they sold any accessible
versions of the DD 3rd ed books, explaining that I was a blind person and
so couldn't read their printed copies.

Their entire response was as follows:

  Dear Mr. Hewitt.

We have no plans at this time or in the future of producing electronic
copies of our works. Thank you for your interest. yours sincerely etc etc

Well, thanks a Heap! I therefore had to muddle along somewhat cadging rules
from the Gm, which wasn't too much fun.

Luckily, drivethru rpg now sell a lot of books in pdf form which mostly
convert to text, so I have several source books for games. If however they
aren't available there or in any other accessible form, my feeling these
days is that I have no respect for a law which does nothing but promote
corporate interest and money grabbing stupidity over any sort of fair
  access.

So, myself I suggest you just stick them on the site anyway. You could
protect your back slightly by having them available only on request when
someone mails you (perhaps have a page about the group and a mail for more
information type of link where you send the books), or having a specific
access related password to the archive which you send out by mail on
request, thus insuring that not just anybody can come along and grab them.
However if they aren't as equally available to visually impared people as
anyone else, then you have every right to redistribute them.

I would however suggest you check drivethrurpg first, just in case they are!
  available as pdfs.

  All the best,

  DArk.

Re: [Audyssey] entombed question

2012-06-15 Thread Allan Thompson
Hi,
spoiler warning...

the goblin card is random, it usually is given when fighting goblins in the
goblin stronghold I think.

the crystal card is given when the drake is defeated for the first time.

the plague card is byable from the bazaar under special items for 2000 trade
coins. Only problem is that if you get the plague card after getting other
cards, you lose all the cards and have to get them all over again.

The adventurer card is given when you combine thief and wanderer on the primary
character.

the druid is gained thru the joining of cleric and ranger for the primary
character.

I think those are all cards, can't remember then all.

  Hi Allan,

I certainly have considered writing games for Apple iOS devices given
their popularity, but its not as simple or straight forward as you
might think. First, in order to develop software for iOS devices like
the iPhone a person must own a Mac, have the Apple development tools,
and the iOS SDK.Since a decent MacBook is going to cost a developer
say $1,200 for the computer hardware required for development and
software its an expensive investment. Second,iOS apps are almost
exclusively written in a language called Object C. Its a language I'm
not really familiar with, and I would imagine every blind audio game
developer is in the same boat. Point being any audio game developer
thinking of writing games for iOS needs to spend time learning their
proprietary language for their proprietary OS, using their proprietary
tools. Finally, if that isn't enough, every game written for iOS must
be reviewed by a board who will approve or decline the app's
acceptance into the Apple app store. As Liam so recently found out if
it doesn't meet very specific standards a person could end up spending
a lot of time and money and still have it rejected by Apple in the end
for reason x.So at this point I don't think its worth my time or money
investing in the iOS platform from a feasibility standpoint.

If I were going to develop games for a mobile platform I would
strongly consider Android. For one thing it has very open standards,
uses the Open Java specification, and accept for some specific
graphics toolkits etc Android is very easy to work with. Googles
standards are much more relaxed than Apple, and its possible to use
off the shelf tools and applications to develop and port apps from
Windows and Linux directly to Android. A developer doesn't necessarily
have to own an Android phone to test out the apps because its possible
to run Android OS in a virtual machine where its not possible to run
iOS inside a virtual machine for development purposes.

  Cheers!

Excellent.
I just tried out this game and I am pleasantly surprised.
The documentation was good, I tried both sappi and jaws and it worked really
well.
While I was never a big wheel fan, I found myself strangely hooked on solving
the puzzle.
All in all a good job, and with taht little fix already in, I am going to buy
it.

  Hi Kelly and all,
I have just released a 1.0.1 patch which fixes a few issues:
The puzzle is now spoken if the puzzle is filled without it being solved,
I.E. letters are guessed and vowels purchased all the way through the game
  until the puzzle is full.
The SAPI rates are now more adjustable, from 0 to 20.
The game will now interface properly with System Access and NVDA.

  Thanks.

   Hi Damien and All,

This is a great game! I've only played a couple rounds, but enjoyed what I
saw so registered it soon after. The only change I'd like to see is a
better way of adjusting the speech rate for SAPI synthesizers. I found the
fast setting to be too fast, whereas in games like those from Jim
Kitchen, you can adjust the rate by going to a specific number. I think
that would be better, but that's just me. Also, when the computer player
won the last game I played in the demo version, JAWS didn't read out the
solved puzzle, and I was wondering what it was. Other than that, I'm
   impressed with this product.

   Thanks.

I found other games intersting, but ultimately frustrating. Destination : mars

  Hi everyone,

I thought I would just send you a quick message on a very interesting
development that will effect Windows 7 64-bit users. As many of you
know the copy of the Sapi 5 compatible Realspeak voices that shipped
with Jaws 8, 9, and 10 will not install on Windows 7. The issue is
that Freedom Scientific set a launch condition in the setup installer
to fail if running a 64-bit computer, but the voices themselves work
fine on Windows 7 if you get passed that error message. So what I've
done is built a new Microsoft Setup Installer for the voices,
installed them on a 64-bit computer, and am able to use them with NVDA
as well as Jim Kitchens games. So the good news is it is possible to
use the Sapi 5 compatible version of Tom, Caren, Lee, Daniel, Emily,
etc on Windows 7. The bad news is redistributing my setup installer
would be technically illegal so I can't just casually redistribute my
  copy.

What I'm thinking of doing here is creating a patch so you could copy
your Realspeak disc to your computer, copy my patch over to the setup
installer, and run it to install the voices on your system. This would
legally cover my backside as I wouldn't redistribute the cab file with
the voice data but only the *.msi file which launches the setup. I was
wondering how many people would be interested in this patch so they
could continue to use the Scansoft Realspeak voices on more modern
Windows machines for games, screen readers, etc?

  Cheers!

[Audyssey] godville game

2012-07-23 Thread Allan Thompson
Hi Gang,
This game is kind of hard to explain. Essentially, the player has the role of a
diety over a automated hero who goes on Mud like quests to kill monsters,
loot theier bodies and increase in levels, equipment and skills.
The player actually only has the power, if they wish, to interact with the hero
thru using a limited amount of power to positively or negatively influence
their minion.
As the minion increases in power, so does the players ability to influence and
use their minion to go on quests, build a temple, go to the arena to duel other
player's minions, spar with other players minions without consequences or
reward, and probably a whole lot of other things as well.
The game is free, and can be played on a web browser, or on an IOS product
using voice over, and I think also android products but unsure.
When it comes to the web browser, some of the buttons and controls are wonky.
Playing around with the virtual cursor to get to the punishment button, and
trying to activate artifacts has been problematic but not unsurmountable. On
the iPhone 4s, everything worked really well with voice over.

One last thing. You have to register. While it is free, the registration
process requires the input from one of those hateful capta things. Both my son
who is sighted, and myself trying to use the audio one found it very difficult
and it took a bit to get registered. That was on the web browser however, using
a laptop, windows xp sp3 and jaws 11.and internet explorer 8.
I am not sure how easy or hard registering on the iPhone is. It does require
apple id of course, and the game center as well, but that was about it from
what I could tell.

Anyway, the link is below for anyone interested.

Hi,
Here is a link to a site that holds a list with links of hundreds of audio
games of all types.

AudioGames, your resource for audiogames, games for the blind, games for the
visually impaired!: http://www.audiogames.net/

Below is a link to a site that gets updated regularly about new games coming
out, again the games are listed with links to either the games themselves or to
the websites where the games can be found.

Hope that helps.

[Audyssey] To Dark regarding godville

Hey Dark,
I got trimmed (I am so ashamed) so I just wanted to say that I agree with you

I am also thinking about contacting the game developers about certain things on
the web browser side of the game about some of the controls, although I have
no idea how to tell them the proper way to fix it to make it more accessible.
Any hints on that?

Welcome to Project Holodeck, would you like to make my day?

Infiltrating the Borg or having dinner with Deanna Troi are just a few of
things that could soon become a (virtual) reality with some help from a team
based at the University of Southern California.

Project Holodeck is exactly what it sounds like -- a very serious effort to
make the iconic virtual-reality room from Star Trek an actual reality.

Unlike on the U.S.S. Enterprise, where Lt. Cmdr. Data might just stroll into
a wild west casino in his regular uniform with no extra equipment, Project
Holodeck relies on an Oculus Rift headset for visuals, PlayStation Move for
head tracking, and the Razer Hydra to monitor body movements. The current
holodeck room is at least a little bit interactive, as well, with fans who
are jacked into the system to simulate wind.

The team is also developing a game to show off the setup called Wild Skies,
which will require players to fly an airship and also engage in a little
combat using swords and guns. They plan to go on the road with their
Holodeck system, hitting venues like Maker Faire in the near future.

Until then, you can see the system in action in the video below -- this
early demo features footage from the Sega Dreamcast game Skies of Arcadia,
which Wild Skies seems to be roughly modeled on. Sadly, Cmdr. Troi is
nowhere to be seen in this one.

Re: [Audyssey] working Holodeck game

2012-07-24 Thread Allan Thompson
What?! I thought USA Games was already building a holodeck prototype! grin.
I just love the idea of something like that. It wouldn't be for just games
though. It could help in some situations dealing with mental stress like PTSD.
I watched a show a while back that immersed soldiers suffering from this in a
holodeck like simulation of combat. Apparently, being put into that situation
again, and letting the soldiers respond in that simulation allowed them to get
past the stress and anxiety, effectively curing them. So a holodeck like in
Star trek could do wonders for people beyond games...although I would just love
it for the games lol.

Hey Tom,
I tend to be suspicious of anything new or diffrent since going blind. I have
had situations come up all the time in the past that caused me large headaches
due to an accessible program or game becoming suddenly unaccessible. So I have
simply stuck to that which works and haven't gone crazy with upgrades, updates
and the like. Maybe not the best way to move forward, but like you said, I am
kind of comfortable now with what I got, and probably won't upgrade to
something if there is no real need to.
Thank you for explaining about firefox though. I did notice something called a
godville UI offered during a google search and I think firefox was mentioned
that went with it or was needed for it. Maybe I will check out firefox and see
what that Ui is all about.

Re: [Audyssey] working Holodeck game

2012-07-26 Thread Allan Thompson
Hi Dakotah,
I couldn't agree with you more. Very well said indeed.
My only comment when it comes to Matrix style brain gaming is that I think
safety measures would be put in that would prevent most of the problems that
might arise with normal person usage.
For the disabled however, I can see it becoming very addictive and popular, if
ever it happened. I mean, a paralyzed person would feel whole again, a blind
person could see, deaf could hear, etc and so forth. Why would anyone disabled
leave such an environment for reality? I guess I am talking beyond games to
interconnectivity of brain with a computer simulation or even with others
linked in.

Responding directly to the trans-cranial attachments, it would be
tremendously addictive. There's been more than a little speculative
fiction about virtual reality and its effect on human psychology. I
personally hope it doesn't come about for a long time, if ever, that
virtual gaming is that compelling. I've already heard of some cases
where people have been catheterized so that they can continue gaming
uninterrupted. Imagine, then, the disorders and disfunctions caused by
a perfect virtual simulation constructed and played out in your own
  mind.

Returning slightly to a topic I touched on, I do think that there are
levels and levels of perspective, as I spoke about in my previous
post. It would be foolish to assume everyone's perspective is the
same. There is an argument that those who have been blind for the
duration of their lives have a different perspective on blindness than
do those who have gotten used to being blind. This is not to say that
either perspective is superior, just that they both exist, and it is
not an exclusively singular perspective we're dealing with. A person
who was taught to hate blindness and being blind will respond poorly
to it as compared with a person who was taught that blindness is like
godhood. I give ludicrous examples to make a point. The plain facts
are that our perspectives determine our reality. If that perspective
was molded through adolescence to be that of a sighted individual, and
if most sighted people feel that losing their sight would be worse
than losing any other sense, which tends to be the case, then a
sighted person going blind in later adolescence or beyond would feel
differently about the loss of their sight than a person would if they
  lost it earlier in life.

There are many activities, whether they be games, fencing, building a
house, or cooking a meal, which consistently require the same effort
and the same modifications dependent on skill, ability, and
perception, and there are activities which require more effort for
those who lose their sight later on and activities which require more
effort when sight is lost early. This suggests differences in the
psychological makeup of the person, let alone possible physical brain
differences. There are also activities which the sighted person will
find easier to do or conceptualize than will blind individuals. In
some cases, this is because sighted persons make the majority of the
products and services in the world. In some other cases it is because
sight allows for obtainment of visual data and that the brain is more
properly equipped to make decisions based on visual data. I'm not
spouting nonsense. I'm putting forth fact.

But my basic point remains the same throughout. SOme people can do
some things better. Others do other things better. Hence diversity,
  hence an interesting world.

  Dakotah Rickard

  Hi Allen,

Tar is an archive format similar to zip, rar, etc. Any Windows archive
utility like Winzip, Winrar, 7zip, etc can extract tar files since it
is an open source archive format. So just open it up in your favorite
archive utility, extract it, and you are good to go.

  Cheers!

[Audyssey] Godville support reply

2012-08-13 Thread Allan Thompson
Hi guys,
I wrote the godville support team about the captcha and some other issues with
accessibility. For those interested, here is what they said below.

*** start message***
Hello Allan,

The captcha that we use is owned by Google (re-captcha) and
unfortunately, the audio version is not really easy to understand even
for us. However, you can bypass the captcha completely if you register
with your facebook account of a mobile phone app (Android or iPhone)

As for the issues with the browser version, we'll try take a look into
them, but it might get complicated, because we are not yet sure if
we'll be able to reproduce them.

Yeah, that captcha was about the worst I ever heard. If they can't even figure
out and they know what to expect, then how can they expect us to figure it out?
I know that it requires at least three or maybe more words for the audio but
not the visual one.

The game itself is silly and unintrusive. I guess it doesn't appeal to
everyone, but for some reason it is alot of fun to me. I admit, I can't even
put my finger on what exactly makes it fun to me, lol.

[Audyssey] a bone to pick

2012-08-17 Thread Allan Thompson
I would just like to ask the moderators, or whoever is in charge of such
things, that if my email is rejected due to size (I make mistakes, I'm human
after all) that at least give me the email content back.

This particular time it was an email I must have written at least a week ago
if not longer. I have no idea what it was about, but I am sure it was game
content considering the subject line.

I am only asking for a fair chance to correct my mistake and resend the email
back fixed to the size limit. I feel this is a very reasonable request, that
would far overshadow any trouble it would take for the moderators or whoever
is in charge of such things to do.

Thank you,

Exactly! Thank you for expressing that. I ran into the same situation a while

material and from memory to give to the list, but it got rejected, and just
like that, it was gone. I just didn't have the gumption to bother going thru

I completely and totally agree. A few times I've forgotten to remove the
excess past posts material and my message was rejected. The worst part about
the situation is that they were almost always very long posts that took me a
while to write. When that happens it's the most depressing thing that knocks
you down so hard that you don't even feel like trying to retype it all out
again. You know that even if you do, it will somehow turn out to be half as
long and only 10% of the quality of the lost original. If we had the original
back, then we could make the necessary correction and post it again.

  Hi Al and all,

I'm Sorry, but that really isn't possible with Mailman. Once a message
is rejected, disguarded, etc the message itself is deleted by Mailman
and is removed from the message queue. There is no automatic way to
have Mailman send the message back to the original sender via Mailman
  that I'm aware of.

The only way this might be accomplished is if the moderator in charge
manually copied the message into a new e-mail, e-mailed it to the
original sender, etc along with the automatically generated rejection
notice. The problem is that we get quite a large number of messages in
the moderator inbox for approval and more than half are rejected
because they are over the message length, and we'd have to copy and
e-mail every single one of those back to the original poster by hand.
Would you seriously want to do that yourself?

The thing is that if we started doing this we might as well make the
changes ourselves and then post it directly to the list as there would
be little point to returning the posters message for them to correct
and repost if we had to do all the extra work anyway. :D

  Cheers!

  Hi Darren,

Well, there are a few good reasons for not increasing the message size to 20
KB.

First, is financial. Whoever maintains the Audyssey domain, server,
and list will have to pay for extra bandwidth being used by the list.
The larger the messages the more bandwidth it will take for Mailman to
post several copies of the same message. That cost will directly
effect the guy who is paying for the Audyssey domain, bandwidth, etc.
That happens to be Raul, but there has been discussion of turning the
list over to me so I can just put it on the same service plan as my
USA Games account. Therefore the cost would be my responsibility.

Second, is that the larger the size of the messages the more time it
will take Mailman to post that message to everyone on the list. I
realise an extra 10 KB doesn't sound like much on the surface, but is
actually quite a lot if you sit down and do the math.

For example, let us say that 50 messages are posted to the list on a
daily basis. At 10 KB that will equal something like 0.5 MB coming
into Mailman. Now, Mailman has to copy and repost all 50 messages to
300 list members which adds up to something like 150 MB in messages
going out. Now, let's add an additional 10 KB of length to all 50
messages and watch our output go from 150 MB per day to 300 MB per
day. That's something like 9 to 10 GB a month in messages alone.
That's a dramatic increase that Mailman has to handle when we can cut
that in half by limiting the message length to 10 KB.

Finally, increasing the size doesn't resolve the initial problem being
discussed here. Allen wanted to know if a message was rejected can he
get his original message back. The answer is no, because the software
doesn't support that option. Therefore if a message is 21 KB in size
and the maximum length is 20 KB someone is still likely to complain
about the fact they lost their original message simply because he or
she didn't trim the message in the first place. So increasing the
length from 10 KB to 20 KB would not resolve the issue being discussed
and would add additional problems for the list moderators and
  maintainers in the process.

  Cheers!

  Hi Allan,
As far as I am aware this is because there are over 300 members on the list,
and when the list is in one of its heavier moments such free list providers
can't process the high-traffic data easily enough to accommodate it, which
means some people don't get the messages.

  Hi Al,

Ah, no that wouldn't be possible. Outlook, Thunderbird, Udora, etc use
message rules to sort incoming messages by subject, e-mail address,
etc according to the criteria yougive it in the message rules. For
example, all our messages have the [Audyssey] tag line in the subject
so you could create a message rule to move every incoming message with
the [Audyssey] tag line into an Audyssey folder inside your inbox.
However, you can't apply message rules to an outgoing message as far
  as I know.

If you are concerned about message length one way to resolve this
problem is write your message in something like Windows Notepad and
save it. If the file is less than 10 KB then you know it is fine. If
you get a text file that is larger than 10 KB then you need to try and
trim it down. Of course, we realize there are certain cases such as
the Audyssey Magazine, a news letter, a game walkthrough, where this
isn't possible to make the message any smaller and Damien and I are
usually able to sort out the legit long message from one where the
author simply hit the reply button, typed a response, and hit send
without editing or trimming the contents.

  Cheers!

It is very easy to do that. Just load the movie or whatever sound into Gold
Wave, press the space bar to start it playing, then press the left bracket to
mark the start and the right bracket to mark the end and then control t to trim
everything before and after those marks. You can also manually edit those time

Re: [Audyssey] accessible virtual pets?

2012-11-17 Thread Allan Thompson
Wow! I just love my virtual pet rock!
I am going to train mine to be a seeing eye pet rock!
Then, when it gets a little older, I am going to enter it into those secret
gladitorial pit fighting contests with other pet rocks and watch my pet rock
crush his enemies into pebbles!
If you are wondering how to train your pet rock for the horrors of life and
death blood and guts combat with other pet rocks, then it is very simple.
All you have to do is quote warlike movies with battle hardened sayings from
Conan the Barbarian, Red Dawn, and My Little Pony.
For those about to rock...I salute you!

Is it possible for someone to write me off list and help me a little with

function for the forum, I either missed it or couldn't find it, and trying to
look thru the large number of posts/headings is quite daunting.

I enjoy the games immensely.
My favorite game is Race for president, although mission to mars and the wild

Was there any more new games? When you say new version do you mean an updated

Thanks,

It has been one year since De Steno Games for the iOS platform was release.

The last time I check 2600 people has downloded the app.
So if you have gotten to play the app tell us of your favorite game on the
app.
Well when the new version comes out I'll let all of you know.

[Audyssey] Tactical Battles update announcement

2012-12-18 Thread Allan Thompson
Below is Ian Reed's announcement he posted int he audiogames forum...

Hi all!

It's been a while since my last release. I've been quite distracted with my
day job and with Aprone's swamp and Dentin's Alter Aeon but now I'm refocused
on Tactical Battle.

I've been working hard on new features for map creators and even spent an
entire week of vacation plus the surrounding weekends just working on updates
to the game.

There's been an email chain going on between a few map creators and myself.

There are some exciting maps in the works using themes from Star wars, Star
Trek, Modern military, zombie horror and RedWall Abbey.

There's been a complete rewrite of the point system and I've added new damage
types, structures, regions, stackable units and a new movement system to name
a few.

I've also created a mailing list for those who really want to be in the know.
Some of the benefits of joining the mailling list are:
1 Access to developer versions of the game so you can try out map creation
features without waiting for the next full version.
2 Find out about the latest features so your maps can take advantage of them.
3 Let me know which features you'd like to see implemented and help me decide
how to prioritize them.
4 Access to the latest maps and the ability to give feedback to the map
creators to help shape the final outcome.

To subscribe to the mailing list you can use the form in the Joining the
community section of the BlindAudioGames.com website or simply send an email
to:
ian-reeds-games-requ...@freelists.org
with the word subscribe in the subject line.

All in all this is a huge release for map creators.

If you have some existing maps and need help converting them please join the
mailing list or email me at supp...@blindaudiogames.com.
I don't want all the new changes to stop anyone's maps from getting converted
to the new system.

As always you can download the latest version of the game at
http://BlindAudioGames.com

It includes:
1 Updated versions of my Getting Started maps.
2 A brand new Conquering Redwall Abbey map series by KeyWasFull.
3 Austen's Kingdom at war maps converted to the new system.

If you find issues in Austen's maps let us know, but be forgiving. He had to
do some major conversions to get them into the new system.
KeyWasFull plans on adding more sounds for his maps but is suffering from a
recent hard drive crash and a loss of most of his sounds.

Here's the complete list of changes for Tactical Battle version 1.10:
1 names of units to be defeated in the victory conditions can now include
underscores.
2 Removing the defend_enabled flag from default map flags now removes the
defend skill and also no longer crashes when the AI runs. (obsolete now)
3 Added a no_self_cast flag for skills. This can be used on skills that have
the friendly flag but are not meant for the caster to use on themselves.
4 Added a fly flag for effects so you can add an effect to a unit to allow
them to fly while the effect lasts.
5 Added a remove_effects= flag on skills that works just like the effects= flag
except that it removes effects rather than adding them.
6 Effects that deal end of turn damage and are applied to units rather than
tiles will now cause the damage as expected. (obsolete in the old system though
the new system works correctly as well)
7 Added new flags to skills that allow you to hint to the AI at how the skill
should be used. The flags are ai_heal, ai_buff, ai_curse, ai_tile_curse,
ai_attack, ai_defend and ai_move.
8 Fixed a bug that would crash the game if the AI used a skill that resulted in
it's own death.
9 Fixed a bug where the game ignored the no_movement flag when it is on an
effect applied to a passive skill.
10 Made a huge re-write to the point system. Level creators can now create
their own custom points rather than being restricted to the old hard coded
HP, MP, and AP.
11 In the new point system there are no hard coded skills such as move, attack
and defend. These are now more customizable by the player so that you can
have units who can not attack or move for instance.
12 Implemented a death flag on effects which is used in the new point system.
13 Implemented a hide_old_points flag in the map defaults file to remove all
the hard coded points and abilities from a new map. (now obsolete)
14 Added the ability to set flags for a skill while in the unit file, this is
primarily used to alter how much damage attack does or it's range on a per
unit basis as the attack skill is now treated as a normal skill in the new
point system.
15 Added a map flag called music that let's you set the music for that map.
Music files can be placed in the Music folder of your map pack.
16 Added a skill flag called move_self which is used to support the non-hard
coded move skill but can also be used to support teleportation skills.
17 Added a Default unit flags.txt file.
18 Added a new key= flag for skills that allows you to set a hot key for using
that skill

[Audyssey] potential customizable RPG game?

2012-12-19 Thread Allan Thompson
Hi all,
I just wanted to say that I think this Tactical battles game is not just
focused on , well, tactical battles. Don't let the name fool you. The ultimate
goal is to make this game a full fledged RPG game engine. One where people,
yes, even dumb as rocks people like myself, can finally express their
creativeness onto an audible gaming format.

I would recommend anyone who wanted to be creative in a new way, or who just
wants to see what it is like to edit and customize a game for educational
purposes, this may be a good time to check it out.

I have been testing it thru it's update and I can help anyone if they desire to
experiment. Heck, I would even build a map for you if you wanted, just to help.
Well, that's it. Check it out if you got the time and the inclination. Have a
great day guys,

I agree that it is lacking some of the classical rpg elements.
The way it was explained to me was this: The tactical battles game is at
once a stand alone game and game engine for people to design scenarios.
However, ultimately he wants to develop it as part of the overall rpg
engine he has a desire to make. In the meantime, as people create maps, and
offer suggestions, he is getting a feel for what people would like in a
game like the one he is going to make. So your suggestion is a good one,
and if it is ok with you, I would like to offer that to the TB list.

So I guess the key word was potential, grin.

[Audyssey] Tactical Battles 1.12 release update

2013-02-10 Thread Allan Thompson
Here is a post Ian Reed put on the audissey forum for his tactical battles game:
Greetings all!

I'm releasing Tactical Battle 1.12.
It comes with KeyWasFull's new Tomb Robber series, an updated version of his
Conquering RedWall Abbey series, and an updated version of Allan Thompson's
One shot wonders / Zombie House.
And of course my old getting started maps and an example map demonstrating the
new items and equipment feature.

Some of the highlights of 1.12 have been:
random damage and chance to hit,
scripting,
random sounds,
more customizable teams,
the new rounds and turns system,
effects that cause initial damage or healing just as skills do, effect
modifiers that apply to a specific skill rather than all skills, items and
equipment,
and quite a few smaller but worthwhile features.

Hope you all enjoy!
Remember the game is free and the mailing list is the place to be if you want
to create your own maps or interact with the map creators.
As always, the game can be downloaded from:

Re: [Audyssey] Tactical Battles 1.12 release update

2013-02-11 Thread Allan Thompson
Hi Paul,
I am glad you like the game. I just build maps here and there myself but
whether playing or creating a map it is a blast.

Unfortunately, you have to download the whole game over again. With the maps
included it can be a bit big.
Perhaps I could pull my map packs out of the one I downloaded and I can post
the link to the new release from send space, it would be a smaller download I
imagine. Let me know if you want me to do that.

The email list Ian set up is also a good place to start for map creation.
Everyone is pretty helpful, and Ian does a lot of developing in between
releases that gets playtested and the like.

Re: [Audyssey] Tactical Battles 1.12 release update

2013-02-12 Thread Allan Thompson
Hi Paul,
Correct, I got one in there. It is called One shot wonders/zombie house. One
shot wonders is is a joke since it only uses the one zombie house map. Most
campaigns feature more then one.

I based the map very loosely on the old black and white romero classic, the
night of the living dead.
The plot is simple. Some satellite falls to earth and starts emitting wacky
zombie creating radiation. Hence forth, the world is plagued by brain eating
undead.

You play the survivors, four pros with guns, and about eight or nine generic
survivors who have to search around for items to help them fight off the
zombie horde. Also there is a house in the middile of the map which can be
used to hold off the horde...for a little while anyway.
I hope you enjoy it.
Also be sure to check out the others maps as well, on the web site are map
packs that are works in progress, but feature everything from fantasy,
spaceships to christmas themes.
Also if you have any suggestions or thoughts or complaints about any maps I
make let me know. I am always willing to make the maps I make better.

The game sounds interesting, and I like the name Power Slam.
I am looking forward to this title. I remember watching Hulk Hogan and Rowdy

  Hello everyone,

As many of you know I have been working on a wrestling game for quite
some time based on the WWE brand of superstars etc. The project
started out as an attempt to simply rewrite the Dos Piledriver game,
convert it to a 32-bit Windows application, and update the database of
superstars with wrestlers like Edge, CM Punk, Sheamus, and so on.
Basically, originally it was just going to be an updated version of
  Piledriver.

However, as time went on the game evolved, became much better, and is
moving in a direction entirely different from the original intent
which is apt to happen with us crazy programmers. That's not such a
bad thing. the current version is more like one of Jim Kitchen's
sports games with Sapi for play by play action, pull down context
menus, contains entrance music, crowd ambiance, start and ending
bells, and so forth. In short, the game is no longer Piledriver per
say, and is completely something new which I think needs its own
  title.

Here is the problem. There are a number of WWE games on the market for
the XBox, Play Station, PSP etc and I definitely don't want to get
into entanglements over copyrights if I use a game title like WWE Raw
Verses Smackdown, WWE All Stars, WWE Legends, and so forth. Generic
names like Wrestling League Manager and so on just don't appeal to me.
Piledriver, as mentioned above, is for all intents and purpose a
different game which I don't want confused with my creation. So any
thoughts or ideas on a cool title for the wrestling game I'm working
  on?

  Cheers!

  Hi Dark,

While I see the point of unlockable content in many types of games
this definitely isn't one of them. As mentioned before this game is a
wrestling game written by a wrestling fan for wrestling fans and
restricting certain performers would be counter productive in its
  intent.

For example, I grew up in the 1980's and have many fond memories of
Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Ricky Steamboat, Brett Hart, etc from the
early days of their wrestling careers. Now, assuming this is a game
for wrestling fans it stands to reason I should be able to pull up a
list of performers I want to wrestle and have the opportunity to be
able to select two classic performers like Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage
and reconstruct a match from the 1980's without restrictions. It would
make little to no sense at all to me to pick a performer off of the
current roster like John Cena, have him wrestle x number of matches,
just to unlock certain performers that I might happen to want to play.

This is in my opinion exactly the kind of differences that come up
between a true fan of the sport and just a gamer. Gamers are looking
for something extra, some un lockable content, something extra that
makes the game just another fighting game. A fan, such as myself,
needs no unlockable content to make the game enjoyable and in fact
might find certain restrictions get in the way of his or her
  enjoyment.

  Cheers!

  Hi Al,

The game is essentially a turn based menu driven game much like
Piledriver for Dos is. In case you don't know what I mean by that here
is a basic idea of how it works.

You have a menu of various types of moves such as Aerial, Brawling,
Dirty, Grappling, Submission, Throws, and Finishers. Let's say for
example you select Brawling. A new menu of options will appear such as
Big Boot, Missile Dropkick, European Uppercut, Knee Lift, and so on.
You select European Uppercut and your wrestler attempts to hit the
computer opponent with an uppercut. If the move is successful the
opponent will be stunned or knocked down to the mat. If it fails the
computer opponent will be allowed to attempt to attack you with a move
of its own. This will continue back and forth until a wrestler is
  pinned or submits.

Now, there are two reasons why I didn't create a real time fighting
game like Mortal Kombat as you suggest. First, is I don't have the
money to purchase a library of sound effects for every potential
wrestler, for every single move, and so on. Second, is there are so
many different wrestling moves that it would be impossible to program
keyboard commands for every single possibility. Even if I did so it
would be difficult to remember each and every possible command. So I
chose to keep the same game play as Piledriver, but added some sounds
and music to it as well as Sapi support.

  HTH

Wow, Tom, that sounds awesome!
This isn't so much a suggestion as a question.
Are you going to bother with tag teams? They still have tage teams, right?

This is perhaps a suggestion, see what you think...
What makes wrestling what it is is not just the matches themselves but the
drama in between matches.
So maybe, as an optional setting, one could select drama where between
matches interesting events could happen that might or might not affect stats
for a wrestler.

I see it as a things like:
player's wrestler gets attacked from behind in the back rooms! He thinks it
was next wrestler to fight. As a result he is a little less coordinated.

or

During an interview, player wrestler got squirted in the eyes with burning
hot coffee by next challenger, He is ok, but his rage has increased to new
levels of extreme danger

and of course...

Players wrestler girlfriend/lucky trunks/manager/favorite truck got stolen,
and now he is distracted throwing off his focus for the upcoming belt!

It wouldn't be anything too major, just adding or subtracting or even just
doing nothing but entertaining so that the feel of the wrestling shows I used
to watch would be there .

No, but I remembered a solution that worked for someone else some time ago.
I tried it, and it worked. I reinstalled Jim Kitchen's Winkit file and now
have SAPI speech again. Thanks for all the help, people.

   Hi Allan,

Interesting. Espeak uses the Sapi 5 API for voice output on Windows so
I don't know why it would work when other Sapi compliant voices
   wouldn't with games.

As far as ESpeak voice quality goes that is a matter of preference.
Yes, I'll agree it is very robotic, but I use it every day with NVDA
on Windos and with Orca on Linux and I find it more responsive and
better than Eloquence in many cases.

[Audyssey] Adventure Game Engine release with Shadowgate adventure

2013-03-10 Thread Allan Thompson
Below is a trimmed version of Ian Reed's post to the audio forums about a new
release of the Adventure Game Engine which features a great new adventure.
 Post is below.
***begin message***

Hi everyone,
It's been ages since I've released a new version of the adventure game
engine.

For quite some time Nina0116 has been working on the ShadowGate
adventure which is a port from ShadowGate for the original Nintendo.

I'm happy to announce that Nina0116 has completed the adventure and now
you can try it for yourselves.
I want to give a big thanks to Nina0016 as the engine has been a bit of
a pain to work with and Nina's feedback and willingness to trudge
forward despite the engine's problems have really served to improve the
engine.

The game can be downloaded from
http://BlindAudioGames.com

I hope you all enjoy Nina's hard work.

You can contact Nina0116 on the AudioGames.net forum on this thread:

[Audyssey] Brief Description of Shadow Gate

2013-03-10 Thread Allan Thompson
Hi Guys,
For all those who might be interested, I want to give a brief description of
the game, how it works, and a little about the awesome new adventure called
Shadow Gate.
AGE, or Adventure Game Engine, allows those with a desire, to make their own
menu driven adventure games. It is free, with a simple registration process.
The new update has made the game engine more user friendly for game creation.
The game menu itself consists of the normal menu items like: Go, take, use,
select, inspect, inventory, talk and things of that nature.

Shadow Gate is about taking the role of an adventurer who is tasked to go
forth and defeat an evil warlock who is attempting to summon forth a dread
beast to conquer the world. It is filled with puzzles, wierd magical rooms,
learning magic spells and plenty of exploration, not to mention a little humor.
One of the interesting things about the adventure is that you need to keep an
eye out for unlit torches. If your current burning torch starts to run out,
you need to light up a fresh one, so there is an added element of danger. There
is also save and load saved games so you can keep your progress thru the
adventure and overall it is a real blast. All the music is from the original
NES version, which is surprisingly catchy and fitting.

If these type of games are something you enjoy, then give it a try.

Hi Charles,
I think maybe I used IF when really I am talking about text adventures. Since I
am not a big fan of either, I used the term to kind of cover it all, so sorry
to all for the confusion.

So, if that is the case with the cavern game, then I think a text adventure can
be recreated on the game engine.
Actually, I think I would love to see alot of the more popular text adventure
games recreated. Especially Zork. That is one of two text adventure I remember
playing. The other was on a friends computer, I think it was quest or dragon
quest or maybe kings quest. Not totally sure on that.

If I remember correctly, it is an expanded version of the colossal cave
adventure game that was also known as adventures in C. Basically you have
to find the opening to a cavern, enter and explore it, finding treasures as
you do so. You also must, in order to continue at times, solve puzzles.
You give directions like walk north, pick up keys, and such to tell the
game what you want to do.

Re: [Audyssey] Brief Description of Shadow Gate

2013-03-11 Thread Allan Thompson
Hi Shawn,
You might have wanted to put up a spoil alert or something for those who play
the game, and didn't want to be given hints.

That is the spoil alert for everyone reading this now in fact. If you are
playing the shadow gate game and don't want hints, do not read further...

Shawn, those things you mentioned were not bugs in the usual sense. There is
several degrees of seperation between an atari port of a visually played nes
game, and the audio version of the same game on a diffrent platform in an
accessible format.
There will be diffrences, and this isn't all that unusual. In the sighted
world, especially with side scroller games or action games diffrent content
will be snuck in for diffrent systems to keep the game fresh and to give
incentive to buy the game for those diffrent consoles.
For this game, I don't know. Nina might have omitted things out of
forgetfulness, or it might have existed in the same way as on the atari port.
Either way, those things you mentioned are not bugs.
Secondly, the rope does do as you say, but you have to be a little more clever
then the atari walkthru to figure it out. Use that sharp mind of yours and
check out everything around you, and in your inventory, and you should be able
to solve the puzzle.

As for the use and select menu choices...ironically I mentioned the same exact
thing to Ian a while back.
I guess, for the time being, the best way to remember which does what is to
think of use as useing it on yourself, or useing something like an unlocked
door, or a bridge or even a staircase.
Select is usually done when you want to use an item on some element in a
room, like a pool, or a monster, or you want to use an item on another item,
like a burning torch on an unlit torch.

Lastly, yeah, the music is retro. I think it is quaint and takes me back to the
nineties, lol. There is actually some shadow gate music called overclocked
where people take old video game music and rock out with it, or turn it into
disco, lol.

Re: [Audyssey] Brief Description of Shadow Gate

2013-03-11 Thread Allan Thompson
Hi Shawn,
I talked to Nina, and she said that she was only familiar with the NES version
of the game. So it is entirely possible that the atari could have had diffrent
content, either for keeping the game fresh, or just memory problems. Back then
game consoles were no where near the memory capacity of an atari computer, so
it could be that some things got cut from the NES, which would make sense. I
never played the game before this adaptation, which I regret cause it seemed
like it would be alot of fun.

Shawn, if you could give me a link to the walkthru, or the walkthru itself,
Nina said she wanted to take a look at it, and I am thinking she might want to
put the content in the game you mentioned, but that is just my guess, she
didn't say one way or the other.
She did mention she is going to work on a zork port at some point which I think
is going to be really interesting.

SPOILER ALERT:
Don't read further if you don't want to ruin the game.

Shawn, You don't have to drop anything to use the bridge. I playtested the
entire map and the bridge can't be used until you are ready to use it. Consider
the inventory and objects you find, and notice anything that might seem to have
a strange quality when inspected, especially when it might pertain to crossing
a chasm with a rickety and dangerous bridge.
Honestly, the walkthru is not doing you any favors. Play the game without it,
and just work within the boundaries of the game itself, you will have alot
more fun.
Good luck,

If you go to the roll history tab, you can find a breakdown of the

Hi Tom,
God forbid that the audio dependant has to be shuffled into the iPhone as a
game platform. Honestly, while I love the iPhone for what it does, I really
haven't enjoyed anything in the game department that I thought I had to really
have when it came to the IOS apps. Give me a PC any day of the week. Does this
mean your wrestling game is hanging on this particular decision?

As for new games, there is Tactical Battles and that shadowgate adventure and
they are free...I got to check out what Dark mentioned too.

Let me rephrase what I said earlier. I know IOS is probably the latest fad, but
I am hoping a developer could do both, and not drop the one for the other.

Well, that's my two copper coins.

Some of the people are just cheaters looking to give themselves an unfair

malicious purposes. We get hackers that try to crash the server so that no one

its got the nintendo and atary walkthroughs.
I don't mind about the switch not doing anything, but the atary
walkthrough made the game harder, dropping sertain things as an
alternitive to what is there right now, sertainly a lot more puzzles
in the atary walkthroughs the switch was an extra item.
My plan tonight is to now I know what the game is supposed to do is
  follow the atary walkthrough.
I like the idea of using the spellbook on things though to be honest
I'd like the spellbook to disapear from the inventory and appear in

Can anyone help me with some star trek questions I got?
I am building another star trek map for Tactical battles, and the request has

While I am no slouch int he trek department, I know there is some who are very
knowledgeable, and I just need some info to make the map as accurate as I can
tot he things in question.

If anyone could answer me off list, I appreciate it. The email is
allan1.thomp...@cos.net

My questions are:
1. Do quantum torpedos work only on borg ships, how much damage do they do
compared to a photon? Like double? Are shields effective against quantums?
2. what class of ship is the defiant? How does it's gatling phasers compare to
a phaser shot from the enterprise D or enterprise E?

3. Does anyone have any trek websites with good ship break downs for the famous
ships? Mostly crew sizes and clas type.

Thanks for any help

  Hi Al,

As this is game related I'll allow this topic on list. Moreover since

questions. Below are your questions and my answers.

  1. Do quantum torpedo's work only on borg ships, how much damage do

A quantum torpedo will work on any enemy ship it is fired at.
According to the Deep Space 9 technical manual the standard quantum
torpedo will do 50 megawatts of damage as apposed to the standard 18
megawatts of a standard photon torpedo. So its almost three times as
  powerful as a standard photon.

  2. what class of ship is the defiant? How does it's gatling phasers
compare to a phaser shot from the enterprise D or enterprise E?

The Defiant is a Defiant-Class Escort. As with U.S. Navy ships the
ships in Star Trek get their class name from the first ship in that
class to be built. In this case the U.S.S. Defiant was the first ship
in its class to be built and placed in active service.

As for the pulse phasers I couldn't find an exact amount of damage for
this, but its suppose to deliver about three times the damage of a
type x phaser. Since the type x on the Enterprise D does about 5.1
megawatts of shield damage per phaser it must be somewhere between 15
and 16 megawatts of power per shot..

  3. Does anyone have any trek websites with good ship break downs for
the famous ships? Mostly crew sizes and clas type.

I'll have to look for my old bookmarks file for Firefox, but I had a
couple of websites that had copies of the Star Trek technical manuals
as well as other related materials that you could read online.

Yeah, I think that is what I am going to have to do, and seperate the two
generations of ships. Thanksf or the help, I think that is my best course of
action.

  Hi Al,

I don't doubt it. Its not really possible to mix old Trek ships with
newer Trek ships as games just can't be balanced out right. The newer
classes such as Defiant-Class and the Sovereign-Class make ships like
the Enterprise D look like a pile of junk. The main reason is because
of races like the Borg and Dominion required newer more advanced
designs that just are too powerful when looking at AKlingons,
Romulans, Ferengi, and other traditional enemies.

[Audyssey] captcha

2013-04-11 Thread Allan Thompson
Hi Folks,
Captchas, in a word, suck. We all know that, but I get an email newsletter
called flying blind, and in it is this one link concerning blind testers for
audio captchas being developed. I thought it might be nice to be proactive and
help out in this capacity. The link and brief description is below, which I
copied and pasted from above mentioned newsletter.

2) Researchers are looking for blind users to test some audio CAPTCHA's they
think will be both effective and accessible:
