Good call. Problem solved by upgrading to Ant 1.8.2

Good - what were you using?

Mapper support has been added to unzip and friends in Ant 1.7.0.

It might make sense for the Ant script to check for a minimum version.

No functional tests, as usual.

hashes and sigs are good, tag and source distribution match except for
svn keyword expansions.

The only files RAT doesn't recognize seem to be testfiles or files that
can't carry a license. NOTICE and LICENSE look good.

I haven't performed any sort of test, not even tried to build JMeter.

* hashes and sigs are fine

* source tarball and svn tag differ in some ways, some minor like no
checkstyle.xml in the source archive but at least one that might be
  significant:

For me this is not big enough to cast a negative vote, this really
depends on how closely the JMeter devs want the tag and the released
  code to match.

* in addition the source distribution is missing the docs subdirectory.
  Is this intentional?

* RAT only flags some testfiles, which is good enough for me

* NOTICE should contain 2011 rather than 2010

* ApacheJMeter.jar should probably not contain the tird party notice and
licenses but only the ASF ones as the files inside the jar only apply
to the jar and not the binary distribution. No biggy for me.

Not a +1, yet.

To be cross platform dont expect more than 2sec.

Ant uses 2 secs on windows and 1 sec on Unix as a heuristic. It is
not correct (it depends on the filesystem, not the OS[1]) but a good
guess in most cases.

Stefan

Footnotes:
[1] NTFS could be better than 2 secs, while a FAT fs mounted via
SMB on Linux would need 2 for example.

My fault. I was on a machine with no Java 5 on it and knew that if I

IANAL and all that.

Since you've written the code, you retain the copyright and can
re-license it under whatever license you want to. Just make sure it
is your original submission and nothing else. If anybody else

I'd tar up the CVS module and make it available for download from

Over in Ant land we did the same for the ant-anatidote module.

2005-02-24 Thread Stefan Bodewig
I have no idea where the original thread happened, at least I didn't
see any mails before this one.

On Wed, 23 Feb 2005, robert burrell donkin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

i wonder whether henri might be able to bring this up (either

The structures are pretty well defined. Each project is supposed to
have at least one security liaison that the security committee knows
about. Incoming security issues are supposed to go through this
liaison, but recent mails to the PMC list suggest it doesn't happen
that way.

Having just dealt with the issue below I was thinking where else,
other than the Tomcat User mailing list this information needed to

[EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED], IMHO. This along with a new
Tomcat release that fixes the issue.

From my experience fix = release = announce is the process used by
other projects, including httpd. And from an end-user standpoint the
process that makes sense the most.

 2. Do we publish anywhere a list of known security issues and
their associated fixes? If yes, where? If not, should we?

I think we should follow the httpd way
http://httpd.apache.org/security_report.html is linked from the main
navigation. If you look into one of the pages linked from there, it
goes to apacheweek for some reasin, but we should be able to produce
the same sort of content ourselves.

Not that I know. I'd assume it'd be a Tomcat page somewhere?

I think this is an Ant vs. Maven issue, although I don't recall
 which way around.

Ant's checksum task has a fileext attribute. If you don't set it,
it defaults to the name of the algorithm, so it would be .MD5. Using
the fileext attribute, you can easily use whatever you want.

The third is just that XSLTC orders the attributes differently from

 I give up :)

How would I force it to be dependent on a particular version of
 Xalan?

Check the jar as well as an xml-apis jar from xml-commons (or from
Xalan itself) into svn, write a build.sh/.bar combo that ensures those
two jars end up in the bootclasspath and force all people to use the
scripts instead of Ant directly. I can't think of any other way,
sorry.

The script would be as simple as

,
| #!/bin/sh
|
| ANT_OPTS=-bootclasspath path-to-xml-apis.jar:path-to-xalan.jar ant $@
`

Hmm, you'll probably need to include a matching version of Xerces as
well.

Maybe there is a way to do what you trying to do with XSLT in Ant,
even if it may seem less easy. At the risk of overcommitting, what
exactly requires Xalan-J ATM? Maybe I can come up with something
that's going to work with Ant, even if I have to write a custom task
(something I'm not really afraif of).

xsltc appears to sort the attributes of a html tag differently so if
we have 1 person using 1.4 and 1 using 1.5, our diffs are going to
be spammed by attributes rotating back and forth.

That's a problem. Also XSLTC requires far more heap memory than
Xalan-J 2.x.

[site] failure when using Xalan XSLTC

2005-02-17 Thread Stefan Bodewig
Hi,

if you look at jakarta-site2's Gump build on JDK 1.5[1] you'll see
XSLTC (the XSL Transformer shipping with JDK 1.5) complaining about
the value xhtml of xsl:output.

Since I'm no XSLT expert at all, I looked around at the W3C site and
found that xhtml has been added in XSLT 2.0, so XSLTC doesn't seem
to support that yet, while Xalan-J 2.x does.

How do we want to deal with this? Use xml instead of xhtml? Use
Xalan-J 2.x instead of XSLTC when running on JDK 1.5?

Cheers

Any idea how I do that in Ant?

The first answer which many people in Ant land won't like is, use
AntContrib's[1] for or foreach task.

Mappers seem like they'd want to be copying the html file to the cgi
file; ie) wildcard in to and from.

You can do better than that.

The first thing you want is having copy to copy to multiple target
files, to do this you need Ant 1.6 and set the enablemultipolemappings
attribute to true.

To create the mappings, the best solution is writing a custom mapper,
this sounds more difficult than it actually is, in particular if you
are willing to use Ant 1.6.2 where you can simply typedef a new
mapper.

The basic idea is that you write a class that implements
FileNameMapper, has a dir attribute (read a public setDir(File)
method), completely ignores the from and to attributes and scans the
given directory for downlod_*.html files on the first invocation of
mapFileName. mapFileName then returns null for any argument that's
not download.cgi and an array consisting of all download_*.cgi files
you need for download.cgi.

Let me know if you want to go that route and my description turns out
to be too sketchy.

BTW, I just now realized that we have a couple of releases that are
neither PGP signed nor accompanied by MD5 hashes, this should be
strongly discouraged IMHO. In particular since Ant supports
generation of MD5 hashes since a few years now - and so does Maven.

Instead of shortening the section by moving PGP, I'd rather move the
whole section to the bottom of the page and just link it from the top
(see the Ant page for an example).

But this is hardly the only text at the top of the page that could
easily be moved in order to make the actual download links more
prominent.

Thge description of the various types of downloads we provide could
appear at the individual sections - so we don't talk about milestone
and test builds to people who are really just interested in the
latest thing.

We don't need to point to the news page/sites at all IMHO, that's
inside the navigation anyway. And people who are interested in
announcements will find the mailing list page by following the link in
the navigation as well.

Finally I'd move the section about archived builds to the bottom as
well. Thinking about it, I should probably mock up a design to show
what I mean, will do so next week unless I get shot down before 8-)

The tabular view you envision may really be more appropriate than the
long list we have right now. I wouldn't link the project names to the
KEYS files, though, at least to me the connection wouldn't be obvious.

really would be a layer in between as Noel says, something that
completely abstracts away the library (like JDBC) or maybe a layer
purely based on JMX.

While ASL and LGPL may or may not be compatible (or could be made
compatible with layers in between), this is not really the main issue
for Apache releases IIUC.

If your release requires a LGPL library and doesn't work without it,
it means that all your users have to accept the LGPL in addition to
the Apache Software license. This is true for any other other license
as well, that's why mixing licenses should be avoided anyway.

Let's assume for a moment that ASL and LGPL would be compatible. We
could release a combined work, no problem. A pure end-user would pick
up the release and has to accept both licenses, probably no problem
either. But if a company wants to build a product on top of our

OK, the total is 6953, more than three times the traffic of
commons-dev. This is unless we'd really split the lists into separate
lists for bug reports, commits and ideas (I'm not sure I'd like that
idea).

Can anybody with a better memory for commons than I have recap why the
httpclient traffic list has been split off? Did the httpclient
developers want a list of their own or have the developers for the
other commons components been overwhelmed by httpclient traffic?

First, there is this here in the top-level .htaccess

RedirectMatch ^/maven(.*)

which might get into the way of the Redirect in .htaccess inside the
turbine directory (I can never remember the details of rule
precedences without actually trying the stuff, sorry). Am I correct
in assuming we could simply remove that line?

And then redirects seem to work better, if you leave of the trailing

jakarta.a.o/turbine/maven instead of jakarta.a.o/turbine/maven/ when
typing the URL into the browser.

I know what you are talking about (I removed Ant a while ago).

This patch moves ANT, AVALON and JAMES links from the sub-projects
into a new menu section promoted.

I had difficulties in finding a name, so I decided to just remove Ant
(and add the new Former SubProjects section on the main site). OJB
is also gone.

promoted doesn't feel right as it is a decision of the subprojects
to move or not. If you label Ant promoted, it would seem as if it had
been granted some shiny award by the ASF that Tomcat (for example)
hasn't.

Should I apply this, or just remove James and Avalon

I figured that the subprojects should decide for themselves whether
they want to remove the links from the Jakarta site or not.

As a data point, the page-views for Ant haven't decreased at all when
I removed the Ant links (say Vadim's stats [1]).

Heads Up: I've changed the redirects in www.apache.org/dist/jakarta

2002-12-05 Thread Stefan Bodewig
Hi all,

in the process of getting our releases mirrorable (more easily), I've
changed the .htaccess file that redirects all requests to
www.apache.org/dist/jakarta/* to jakarta.apache.org/builds/* so that
each project has now a redirect line of its own.

I've checked that all links on the Jakarta download pages still work
as they did before (i.e. the POI source nightly link will not work -
as before ;-), but if you have any links outside of the Jakarta's main
site, please double-check.

I'll adjust the nightly build links as the next step as nightlies
shouldn't go to the mirrors anyway.

Making distributions mirrorable

2002-12-05 Thread Stefan Bodewig
Hi,

to get some load off of the apache.org machines and to save network
bandwidth, we should try to get as many downloads spread to the
mirrors as possible. Right now, most mirrors do not carry Jakarta
distributions at all as our current directory layout forces them to
use complicated rsync scripts - and to maintain those on a daily
basis - just to avoid moving nightlies around.

There is a document that describes where releases should be located to
make the mirrors happy. Furthermore we will make our users happy if
all Apache releases follow a similar naming and URL concept. See
http://www.apache.org/dev/mirrors.html.

We've moved the latest Ant release during the last few days and I've
put together a step-by-step guide of what I've done
http://cvs.apache.org/~bodewig/mirror.html.

If you want to move your project's distributions to the correct
download locations (please do) and need a hand, feel free to contact
me. [EMAIL PROTECTED] is the correct list for more general
questions ([EMAIL PROTECTED]).

I think, the last sentence is why we should stick to the full license
