Re: [Goanet] World Goa Day in Melbourne ignites Cultural Heritage ofYore
As regards the following passage in the Bharat Times report «to celebrate Goan identity, gained with the recognition of Konkani on August 20, some 18 years ago», kindly note that what happened (more than) 18 years ago, not on August 20 but on February 4, was the passing of the Official Language Act by the Legislative Assembly of the then Union Territory of Goa, Daman and Diu according to Konkani the status of the sole official language of Goa. The memorable event of August 20, 1992 (therefore, 13 years ago) was the recognition of Konkani - by unanimous vote of the two chambers of the Parliament of New Delhi - as a national language of India and its inclusion in the eighth schedule of the Constitution. The theme this year was promotion of Goan culture and heritage in their second home, Australia. There was a unique presentation of the Goan Dekhni. The Dehhni presentation brought many a tear to a lot of eyes that night and nostalgic memories of Goa were evoked. The choreographer, Mrs Lidia Martins was called in to take a bow. The evening had a Goan fiesta mood. A large number of Goans converged to celebrate Goan identity, gained with the recognition of Konkani on August 20, some 18 years ago. The evening turned more pleasnat with conversation in Konkani doing the rounds amongst Goan guests. Co-ordinator, Oscar Lobo, termed this as the crowning glory of the evening. The function was also attended by mainstream Australian friends of the Goan community. The venue was gorgeously bedecked with decorations on the walls and World Goa Day and ANZ balloons in the hall. The tables were a spectacle with soft candlelight on the silver stands. The evening turned more colourful and stylish with formal suits and the ladies in colourful traditional attire, thus making the function breathtaking. Even three members of local police station made their presence and enjoyed the spread of Goan food. 'After Dark' band entertained a full house crowd. The floor was packed with couples dancing, pepping up all the other guests. There were prizes galore with more than 25 numbers being awarded during the night including a giant television, DVD sets, stereos and other gifts sponsored by ANZ Bank, Dandenong market. Local businesses like Hindustan Imports, True Spice, Maharani Restaurant, Bentleigh, Stella's Gifts, HO MEI Chines cafe, Doncaster East, and Hair Styling from Philomena's at Mr. Waverly also sponsored other gifts. In addition, gifts were also given away by the 'After Dark' band on the happy occassion. The buffet had a spread of many delicious chaffing dishes including Goa's favourite Sorpotel. After the buffet, came in the toast of the night - the Konkanni and Portugues songs. The crowd was enthralled packing up the floor in seconds, with almost every table deserted. And green, yellow and red kerchiefs bobbed up leading to some traditional Goan dancing into the late night! The evening was co-ordinated by Oscar Lobo and ably supported by Salus Correa, Joe Fernandes and Vidal Franklin, who showed their tacit support and loyalty to the World Goa Day and were acclaimed for the gorgeous and a typical Goan night. [Goanet] World Goa Day 2005: Melbourne, Australia - a report
WORLD GOA DAY 2005 MELBOURNE For the third year in a row, Goans in Melbourne got together on the 20th of August, to celebrate World Goa Day. True to the norm of Indian Stretchable Time [IST] people began coming in around 7.30 pm against the planned 7.00pm start. But when they came, they came in droves, and soon every seat was filled [the function was fully sold out a week before the 20th]. The Master of Ceremonies for the day, Joe Fernandes [Colva] kick started the event with gusto, and ably supported by AFTER DARK an 8 piece band soon had the crowd on the floor. After the first set of dancing, there was a unique presentation of the Goan Dekhni. Attired in traditional attire, a set of three young girls and boys justified their presentation of song and dance to the thrill of the crowd who joined in singing Hanv Saiba Poltodi Vetam amidst clapping and whistling to the tune of the song! The Dekni presentation brought many a tear to a lot of eyes that night, and nostalgic memories of Goa were evoked. After the presentation, the crowd was thrilled and kept asking for more. The choreographer, Mrs Lidia Martins was called in to take a bow, and her efforts were well appreciated by one and all. Joe then announced the traditional MARCHA. Almost every couple strutted on to the dance floor and joined in the fun. This ended with the fiesta which proved to be the icebreaker for the day. Strangers became friends in an instant, and the very ambience in the hall changed. It was so good to see so many Goans converge for a common cause, which was to celebrate our identity gained with the recognition of our beloved Konkanni on that day. It was pleasant experience hearing Goans speak Konkani. It was a great sense of camadarie and love for fellow Goans that pervaded the hall. This was the crowning glory of the day. The band seeing the mood of the crowd, excelled and dished out many old and new favourites, to the entire satisfaction to the different age groups that were present. The floor was packed with couples dancing and every one was happy. This year there were prizes galore. More than 25 prizes were awarded during the night, and these included a giant television, DVD sets, stereos given by ANZ Bank, Dandenong market, some gift vouchers from prominent Indian and Australian businesses, bottles of wine, besides other items. People were glad to see so many opportunities to win that night! Then came the buffet. Once again this was a great affair. With a spread of so many delicious chaffing dishes including Goas favourite Sorpotel, every one was very satisfied with many queuing for second serves to the delight of the Chef. In all there were 8 different dishes laid out, followed by a two course dessert. After the buffet, came in the toast of the night! And that was the Konkanni music and songs. The crowd was enthralled! This time the floor was packed with almost every table deserted. With green, yellow and red kerchiefs waving we saw some traditional Goan dancing too! And they just refused to stop for a long long time. We wound up at about 12.30 am, as we could not carry on due to legal restrictions in the area. This was a night of nights, a night that we will remember for the next 364 days till we all meet again to celebrate World Goa Day 2006. The function was ably supported by Mr. Salus Correa, Joe Fernandes and Vidal Franklin, who showed their tacit support and loyalty to the World Goa Day, who were acclaimed for a night that will surely be remembered for long time! 00 From: goaday [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] CC: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: World Goa Day celebrations in Portugal Date: Sun, 21 Aug 2005 12:49:41 +0100 Dear Rene, Constantino and the entire Comunity of Goa Damão Diu World Wide. We Goans, here in Portugal celebrate the World Goa Day along with the Daman and Diu bretheren. Yesterday we celebrated the World Goa Day with remarkable assistene. We had a big animated crowd of people from different walks of life and diferent religions. It was unique and beautiful. At first I had thought that this project would be too big for me, but with hard work and the help of many Goans, because there are a lot of Goans who really do help, the event was a success. May I say that the Youth of today have tremendous capacity, and only require some guidance, support and recognition from the elderly people, and this we must do, so that our yougsters can take the Goa Project higher and livelier. The two celebrations one in the morning and the other in the afternoon, were well atended with so many people, which will be refered by other people not me. 1. The first event was a Inter-Religious Celebration at the Famous Padrão de Descobrimentos. My Big Thank You goes to the Hindu, Catholic and Muslim comunities in Portugal for making this possible. 2. The second event was at the Restaurante of the International fair of Lisboa, which was also well attended and diversified. The attendees were from all asssociations, Goans who have lived in Moçambique and also friends from the Português Comunity. Do join me in congratulating the Goa Damão and Diu comunities as well as the Hindu, Catholic and Muslim comunities in Portugal, for their dedication and partcipation in these events. To the people who could not make it to this event, I have to say you have missed a wonderful oportunity that will not come back. We never regret for what we have done. We only regret for what we have not done. In September, 16th, 17th and 18th we will be expecting a much bigger crowd, but donot delay in confirming your presence and buying the tickets as they will be all sold out very soon. Lets change and not be late Fondest Regards to all, Leão Fernandes 0 Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs

I have seen a report on the Goan Festival held in the London and there is no mention of 'World Goa Day' for the benefit of all here it is:- http://www.goanvoice.org.uk/newsletter/2005/Aug/issue2/ Report: UK Goan Festival of 31 July 2005. UK Goan Festival 2005 From Diego Pinto, Chairman of the Festival Organising Committee: The rain shied away to make way for the Goans to celebrate and thousands came to the most popular event in the Goan calendar - The Goan Festival which was yet another resounding success. Commencing with Holy Mass, the Chief celebrant Rt. Rev. Alex Dias, Bishop of Port Blair (Andaman Nicobar Islands) along with six concelebrants, made it as solemn as the old Pontifical Mass. The Chief Guest, Antonette Mendes - Melody Queen and film star of Amchem Noxib looked stunning in red. She was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Bernie Gracias, wife of the President of the Goan Association UK. The Goan Association (UK) is delighted to work with the Village/Club Organisations and has enjoyed an excellent relationship over the years. This partnership has made it possible to successfully organise the festival and sponsor Ven. Fr. Agnelo's Commemoration Mass. There were 40 stalls in all, 19 of them selling food with each one endeavouring to excel in Goan culinary art as this day always offers a wide variety of the Goan cuisine. Appreciation should be attributed to the backroom staff and various volunteers - the manning of the gate, the traffic controllers, medics performers, who all offer their assistance/services absolutely gratis. [Goanet]World Goa Day - A Day of Solidarity with Goa and Goans
What is World Goa Day? Why do we need to celebrate it? World Goa Day (WGD) was born in 1999. It was primarily unveiled to mark a day in the year where Goans, globally, would come together in solidarity with Goa and Goans. That modest vision has today amplified into something bigger. The Day honors the vibrant history, language, music, cultural heritage and traditions of Goa. World Goa Day is celebrated on (or around) August 20th. After much campaigning and canvassing by numerous Goans, Concannim was added to the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution and recognized as one of the official languages of India on August 20th, 1992. Needless to say, our common language strengthens our identity; it is one of the strongest fibers in the tapestry of Goan identity that connects Goans from all parts of the world. It is not enough to merely honor our language. We should make every effort to strengthen and promote Concannim among ourselves and our children that the Goan culture may be passed on to future generations in and out of Goa. Goan communities have gathered to commemorate World Goa Day in many major cities around the world. This year, for example, thousands of Goans will congregate (or have already flocked together) to spend time with each other, share food, music, games, stories... to have a good time. The Goan Association of New Jersey (GOANJ) celebrated the occasion on July 23rd under the leadership of Felix Menezes. The gathering raised $1,304.00 toward building the Cavelossim-ASRO Aids Center for runaway kids in Fatorda, a measure sponsored by the local Don Bosco Technical Center. On that same day, Oscar Furtado, President of G.O.A. (Toronto, Canada) led thousands of Goans to join together for the festivities. The day-long program included cultural items, soccer, volleyball, darts, and badminton tournaments. There was live music to dance to. Scores of food stalls catering to the Goan palate offered numerous delicacies: cheuris-pao, sannas, bebincas, perad and more. Flavio Gracias and his Goan Association (U.K.) brought together Goans from other organizations in the UK and celebrated World Goa Day in London on July 31st. The event was solemnized with a Mass celebrated by Bishop Alex Dias of the Andaman Nicobar Islands. The Goan Association of Germany celebrated WGD in Frankfurt on August 6th with a show entitled, Goencho Avaz featuring a number of Goa's illustrious tiatrists. That was the day also, that the Goa Heritage Action Group (in Goa), expressed solidarity with WGD with the release of a book, Walking In and Around Panaji, Goa. In Vancouver, Canada, Goans celebrated WGD on August 14th with an annual picnic. As a matter of great honor, Rui do Carmo Costa was interviewed on CREA- RJ.ORG.BR/WEBRADIO on August 16th by Bene Rodrigues of Centro Brasileiro in Brazil. We have a few more celebrations coming up... The Goa Su-Raj Party, on August 20th, will release its Road Map for Goa a booklet outlining their hopes for a better Goa. That event will be highlighted with a 1km Open Event bicycle race in Panaji, Goa. In Melbourne, Australia, Oscar Lobo and his MelGoans will celebrate their third World Goa Day on August 20th. The Quebec Goan Association has planned to celebrate WGD on August 20th with an annual picnic in Montreal, Canada. Among other events, there will be a Youth Essay Competition for Goan youth (ages 9 through 20). The topics: Why do I call myself Goan?, What does it mean to be Goan?, How does it feel to be a Goan living abroad?, and What do I like about Goa and Goans?. The Goinkars Own Academy in Karachi, Pakistan, under the supervision of Deborah Santamaria, will celebrate WGD on August 20th. There is news from India that the Karnataka Goan Association is coming together at the Catholic Club in Bangalore to celebrate WGD on the same day. In a different continent, Goans in Maputo, Mozambique will celebrate WGD on August 21st. Incidentally there are some 160 families of Goan origin that live in Maputo. Ralph Figueiredo and the Goans in Los Angeles, California, USA, will meet together also on August 21st for a grand WGD celebrations. The highlight will be a Goan Idol competition. Another Goan group, the Divar Association of Canada, plan on celebrating the Bonderam Festival and WGD in Mississauga, Canada on August 27th. The main feature promises to be the traditional Bonderam Parade to the tune of Viva Bonderam, composed and sung by Andrew DeSa. Again, on August 27th, Goans in New York, USA, under the leadership of Peter D'Souza, will convene at their annual picnic at Lake Sebago Beach to celebrate WGD with the theme O' for the Goa State of Mind. For the sake of practicality, on the same day, another group of American Goans will meet at Manorhaven Beach Park in Long Island, USA to celebrate WGD. The expected program will include an Indian Idol competition. Goans in Lisbon, Portugal are coming together in
[Goanet]World Goa Day Has Come to Stay - a reflection
WORLD GOA DAY HAS COME TO STAY by Basilio Magno (Spain) The World Goa Day celebrations going in its sixth year on 20 August 2005 is a social triumph for the Goan cummunities the world over. It is a phenomenal event born out of nothing, just few e-mail epistles by its founder, UK based Rene Barreto, blasted on all Goan nets the unmistakable message of the virtues of Goan unity and the love of Mother Goa. This had mesmerized all the presidents of the Goan Associations to fall in line with his call in the year 2000, and year by year their number has grown abundantly. Last week the Goan Association Gemany joined in for the first time and celebrated the Day with a Konkani Music Show by artistes from Goa. Rene's noble idea would have died a natural death had it not been for the internet collaboration of Goanet.org, Goa-Goans, Goa-world, etc, which helped to propagate the idea to Goans in every corner of the world. His leadership instinct told him that he would need a theme-song or an anthem for the event. Having had known that I had composed a song for Princess Diana and the King of Spain, Rene thought of me and e-mailed to me a request to compose a piece similar to the one you composed for Lady Diana. As there was nothing else to go by in the maiden year, my song Proud to be a Goan took the centre stage. It had become a hit having been hosted on Goa- world.com website, sung by me accompanied by a Spanish band. Thanks to Mario Fernandes of Goan International, who combined the celebration of Goa Day with the Bonderam festival at Sao Mathias island, Divar, premiering Proud to be a Goa, all Goa newspapers carried the story and printed the lyrics of the song. The o HERALD o daily had splashed on its front page the story by Francis X. Ribeiro on 20 August 2000: GOANS TO OBSERVE 'GOA DAY' AROUND THE WORLD TODAY. THEME SONG PROUD TO BE A GOAN TO BE PREMIERED AT BONDERAM. and followed up: Goans all around the globe will be observing August 20 as Goa Day, an idea conceived by Rene Barreto of Goan International who is based in London, with the objective of bringing together Goans form different parts of the world. To mark the Goa Day, celebrations will be held from Kenya to Maryland (USA), London to Bahamas and Harare to Goa at the Sao Mathias island, Divar. To make this a memorable day, a special song (end of this story) has been composed by famed Goan songwriter Basilio Magno, residing in Spain. Basilio who is still recovering from his long illness, was determined to produce something worthwhile. Within a week after being requested by Rene, this former Irving Berlin of India came out with the theme song for Goa Day, titled Proud to be a Goan, a theme he always wanted to propagate to the younger generation, who very often are shy to say, 'I am a Goan'. Within these six years Goa Day has rightly changed to World Goa Day, and has come a long way in popularity. We may say World Goa Day has come to stay, it being fixed in the Goan psyche, and there is no fear of losing the date. However in his farsightedness Rene has established this year Alliance of World Organisations and has entrusted it to a successful organiser in Canada -Oscar Furtado. Rene has always been a lover of Goa. Some years ago he had oganised Goan Jamboree, taking a large number of Goans from London for a picnic in Goa. Not long ago he founded the Goan Musical Society in London, of which he is the founder/president. Musically it is carried on by Joao Paulo Cota, which is doing great job in projecting Goa's musical image in Britain. The name of Rene will go down in the annals of Goan social history as the man who singlehandedly unified the Goan communities the world over and has inspired them to work for the upliftment of Goa and the Konkani language. Others may now also claim to have dreamed of the idea but Rene with hard work and organizing ability has made it the Goan reality. And that is the fact we cherish. My message for the World Goa Day 2005 is that we Goans should shed our colonial complex be it Portuguese of British and proudly start speaking in Konkani with each other at home and at Goan functions. Let's not forget that a community without a language of its own becomes a pariah community. The Goans have a very rich language and the only Indian language written in Roman script. It is our special heritage. A move is afoot spearheaded by the Dalgado Konkani Academy presided by the former MLA Tomazinho Cardoso to seek recognition for the Roman script for Konkani along with the Devnagiri script. Let's collaborate in the letter campaign and make it the theme of WGD 2005, making everyone conscious of the need of Roman script not only for Konkani but for all Indian languages to face the challenges of the cyber age we live in. The song Proud to be a Goan can be downloaded from the website www.goaday.comIts copyright has been gifted to Rene and

[Goanet]World Goa Day
World Goa Day is a vehicle to unify Goans and get them to think about what it means to be a Goan. World Goa Day is not just all fun and games. The first step perhaps is a picnic, a party, a theatre to bring Goans together. But that is only the first step. Several Goan organizations have used the occasion to raise funds for a specific charity or cause in Goa. Rene Barreto who is the prime initiator and instigator behind Goa Day, has always, from day one, urged us to give something back to Goa. So I hope we will not characterize World Goa Day as just a day to have fun and games. Getting Goans all around the world to celebrate this day is a way to affirm our identity, for ourselves and also for our children, especially in the diaspora, as children born in foreign lands may not have the same depth of feeling for Goa as those of us born in Goa or who have lived in Goa. For these reasons, celebrating this day is a worthwhile exercise. Happy Goa Day to all Goans wherever you may be !!! Vivian A. D'Souza

Would be wrong to criticise the person who initiatied this celebration , as the concept is unifying Goans from every corner of the world . But we should not forget , no doubt there is a lot of hype for this day but think it for yourself is everyone celebrating this day because others are celebrating, or we too want to be on the list or are we celebrating it bearing in mind that should any Goan family , or a Goan be it an individual or a group require any help be in employment, domestic, or in any aspect or respect helping him or her they or them when in problem be in Goa or abroad that GOANS will always help each other ? Or is it just fiesta/siesta day carrying no meaning or spreading the true meaning of this day? Once again don't misunderstand me on this day its a great event to be celebrated by each and every Goan and its a must, but not only for fun but it carries and should carry a thoughtful message of helping one another at all critical times.

About World Goa Day ooo In the past few years, it has been nice to see the Goan community awakening to its rich cultural heritage. The various get-togethers world wide have also nourished the much wanted awareness and a keen interest in wanting to know and be part of the celebration as well as the organization on the local and the international front. What does really drive the Goans, spread throughout the world, to cling to their roots while at the same time, being fully integrated in their host countries. The World Goa Day is definitely about our uniqueness, which urges for a fortified identity, only possible with a strong union. The present site is yet another effort in the global aim of reminding and preserving our symbols, marking our culture, and bestowing us the pride to be Goenkar, Damanvkar ani Diukar. [Goanet]Re: (Goanet] World Goa Day!
To: Goanet Management. I have read with dismay a post is short of praises for our own Goan - Mr. Rene Barretto, author of 'World Goa day movement'. It takes a lot of time, money and energy to organise a movement such as 'World Goa Day'. Rene has put in long hours to search and research ways and means to get Goans together and helped to uphold our Goan identity through our culture, Konkani language food, heritage, music, literate etc. He has been very instrumental and pro-active in endeavouring to get Goans together albeit our inherent weakness i.e. the crab mentality running in our veins. Goa is now known more widely than before through the WGD movement. The non- Goans, particularly the Europeans who were not aware of the existence of Goa have come to know of it and its people through World Goa Day. Non Goans are intrigued and want to know more about us and have even visited Goa after witnessing WGD events. Good on you Rene. Hope the Minister of Tourism in Goa will analyse the invisible benefits Goa gets through this free of charge advertisement for Goa and Goans in Goa. Rene, I echo the support given to you so far by Mr. Sanjay Colaco's and Mr. Alfred de Tavares. You are doing a great job. Please continue to push us 'susegad' Goans as you have done for the last 5 years. I realise the time and effort that goes in organising such event. It does not only involve in out of pocket money, it drains you emotionally with brick bats, people's suspicion and moreover it takes away lot of family ltime. I suppose someone has to do it!! My close study of World Goa Day celebration has brought many Goans together at least for the day and particularly all those Goans who for some reasons do not want to be associated with a structured organisation that has hierarchy and have seen members sitting on ice... An organisation or a community for that matter is made up of FIVE BONES: a.. The WISHBONE - who wish everyone else would do the work b.. The JAWBONES - who talk and do little else c.. The KNUCKLEBONES - who knock everything d.. The BACKBONES- who get on with the job and carry responsibility e.. The TAILBONES - albeit few, who think and do evil things with their 'deosarachi shapdee' Rene, you have done a great job and you are among those Goans who fall in the Backbones category. My hats off to you, mate!!! Kudos to you Rene, and best wishes for the New Year 2005 and to all our Goans who forgive and forget those who think others may have trespassed against them. OSCAR C. Join Goans wherever they may be - in promoting , participating or dedicating an event of YOUR Goan organisation to the World Goa Day celebrations this year. Too many of us complain about - us , Goans not reading enough , we all want others to buy , read the books we write or publish - but yet , we do not seem to want to support Goan communities in their efforts for a better society. I am sure many are aware of Fred Noronha s efforts in trying to promote * Goan Libraries * in Goa. I only wish we had more Goans Authors / writers / publishers support these projects. If they have - then we should be kept informed. But ...having said that , we are proud to note that GOA NYC , under the leadership of their President , Mr. Mario de Corla and well supported by his committee and not forgetting his wife Melba Plan to change all this , by organising * an essay competition for various age groups. *. They are also organising a PICNIC with a difference ! yes , an event with a meaning - as George would say. At this time we are in the planning stage for WORLD GOA DAY which we plan to celebrate on our annual picnic on August 29, 2004. It will be a fiesta of Goan food, music, dance and culture. We have not yet decided on the theme. I would like to choose one which pertains to our Young Goans. I think, they feel left out. In order to encourage them we plan to have many youth activities on that day. Also, we hope to have Dr. Gilbert Lawrence give another presentation this year on Goan culture in Diaspora. As you suggested, we are going to have an essay competition for various age groups. They could choose from any of these topics: a) Why do I call myself Goan. b) What does it mean to be Goan. c) How does it feel to be a Goan living abroad. d) What do I like about Goa and Goans. We plan to have these topics posted soon with a deadline date for submittal, August 10, 2004. The plan is to have the essays judged before WORLD GOA DAY. Prizes will be awarded on that day. These essays will then be posted at our Picnic site and could be posted on Goan forums on the net. Our committee has planned a Poster Painting and a Story Telling (Goan theme) competition for our youth. Painted posters will be brought to the Picnic and judged by our distinguished Panel of Judges. All participants in Story Telling will be awarded prizes. [Goanet]World Goa Day - 2004
George Pinto Subject: World Goa Day - 2004 This year World Goa Day (www.goaday.com) is being celebrated Aug 21, 22 or at times convenient to Goan organizations based on their calendars. This year's main theme is JOBS FOR GOANS - Gilbert's Response: Great post and great theme for WGD-2004. Congratulations to Rene ani George. Jobs are a-plenty in the entire health care field in the USA and likely elsewhere. These are non-exportable jobs! There are positions for males and females. The need for these jobs will only increase as the population ages. Many of these jobs will consider payments during training with an after-graduation commitment of employment for one to two years. Great opportunities to move up the ladder in leadership and administration. Example of Jobs: Nurses and their various specializations. Therapists - Physical, Occupational, Respiratory, Radiation. Technologists - Radiology, Operating room, heart surgery, EKG and other bio-engineering technicians etc. Medical Physics, Medical bio-engineering, Medical Computer Dosimetrists etc. Goans have traditionally shunned away from health-care jobs expect for being physicians. There is no reason that the Kerala girls should corner the market on Nursing Profession both in India and Abroad. Nothing against Keralites, but Goans always say, They are de-bhest. Now they have to prove their dedication. I would be glad to provide further information and suggestions. [Goanet]World Goa Day - 2004
Dear all, This year World Goa Day (www.goaday.com) is being celebrated Aug 21, 22 or at times convenient to Goan organizations based on their calendars. This year's main theme is JOBS FOR GOANS - not just in Goa but around the world. One of the most significant issues facing the world-wide Goan community is jobs and our economic future. There are other important issues too. However, we should focus on this theme during the WORLD GOA DAY celebrations. In the past, Rene and I have been pleased with the events, but sometimes they did not have a serious, meaningful element. This year's celebrations on Aug 21, 22, can be left to each individual organization. However, the celebrations should include the theme: Jobs for Goans. We would recommend that whatever the celebration, there should be time set aside called JOBS AND CAREERS. 1. Invite speakers from various business organizations. 2. Invite employers to discuss their companies, especially Goan employers. 3. Invite Goans seeking jobs to come to the event and network. 4. Provide career advice. The future success of Goans is based on our economic well-being. We have many Goan unemployed in Goa. In addition, Goans around the world do not know necessarily know the various opportunities available to them and do not necessarily seek the top jobs or the highest positions. They need encouragement, support and information. They need to see and hear other successful Goans. In addition to the JOBS FOR GOANS theme, if you have time consider adding the following to the agenda: 1. FINANCIAL LITERACY. Invite money management speakers. The can talk about investing, retirement planning, insurance, children savings accounts, elder care management, etc. There is a critical financial literacy gap in the Goan community which needs to be addressed. 2. POLITICAL INVOLMENT. Invite political activists, even if you disagree with their views. Have them discuss the political process locally and how one can be involved. Ultimately, without being involved in the political process, we will continue to be marginalized and sidelined while others dictate our future and make the rules we live under. No point in complaining if we do not become active politically. Through political power, most of our other goals can be achieved. 3. HEALTH FAIR. Invite doctors/nurses and have them speak about prevention and cures of common diseases and ailments. Diabetes, heart disease, blood pressure, cancers, children heath issues, senior citizen issues, etc. There are a number of topics which can be covered. Let us move forward together in a meaningful, memorable manner. Regards, George Pinto Rene Baretto www.goaday.com __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Finance Tax Center - File online. [Goanet]WORLD GOA DAY E-GROUP
Dear all, We are delighted to launch an e-group dedicated to the celebration of WORLD GOA DAY. This e-group will be exclusively dedicated to the discussion, co-ordination and world-wide celebration of WORLD GOA DAY. This year's celebration will be Aug 21, 22. Please mark your calendars. If you wish to join this group, please email me directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] with your full name, country of residence and phone number where you can be reached and you will be added to the group. WHAT IS GOA DAY? As Goans we are proud to celebrate GOA DAY. Our manner of celebration is to try and give something back to our community by improving and developing Goa/Goans. This year's theme and focus is: CREATING JOBS FOR GOANS. Through economic progress and capitalizing on opportunities we can make strides in various fields and help Goans along the way. Many Goans have given back to Goa and they have done so impressively. Whether they have built cyber communities, donated money, time, skills, computers, or work for the underpriviledged, etc., there is hopefully a significant increase in altruism, based on our traditional Goan emphathy for humanity. Our worldwide celebration of GOA DAY should not be minimized. It compares no less with the Irish efforts of St. Patrick's Day and America's Independence Day (minus the commercial marketing of those days) in preserving our identity. If we want to be, we can be a proud people, holding our own on the world stage. We have our own music, art, cuisine, history, literature, etc. Let's hope we all specficially set aside some time this GOA DAY to celebrate our culture and give back to others. Re: [Goanet]WORLD GOA DAY HAS COME TO STAY
Could anyone explain to me as to what exactly, Basilio Magno means in his song title, Glad to be Goan? I'd find such clarification quite helpful. Cornel - Original Message - From: rene barreto [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, November 10, 2003 8:54 AM Subject: [Goanet]WORLD GOA DAY HAS COME TO STAY 000 WORLD GOA DAY HAS COME TO STAY by Basilio Magno (Spain) 000 Hearty congratulations to Fausto V. Da Costa for the successful World Goa Day 2003 celebrations in Mumbai, under the banner of the Goan Review Art Foundation (GRAF) of which he is the president. However, his disappointment as seen in his e-mail editorial: Dusro Goencho Sonvsarik Daija- Dis (17 Oct.) with the hunreds of participants in the celebra- tion due to their disinterest in speaking in Konkani language or their lack of interest in the only Konkani-English bi-monthly news magazine The Goan Review that he edits and publishes in Mumbai, after being displayed in the hall is understandable in the light that he is a dedicated apostle of Konkani and he rightly wishes that everyone follows him. But Christianity was not established in a day. It took years of knocking and frustrations on the part of the apostles, but they persevered in their efforts at the cost of much sacrifice, at times even of their life. Fausto questions the utility of the existence of the World Goa Day, saying: Hem sogllemniallttoch he 'World Goa Day' osle dobaje korun koslo faido kai mhunnon ami chintunk poddttat His thinking must be that this is a heritage day for Konkani promotion and that people come to this function and speak only in English. It is astounding that this happened in Mumbai, India, where most of the Goans must be knowing Konkani. Or do they not? It would be very difficult for Fausto to monitor 500 people to verify whether they spoke in English or Konkani. Considering they did not, it is not difficult to see the reason why. I think they must still be clothed in the colonial complex despite the 41 years of Goa's liberation. It is ingrained in the Goan psyche to speak in English or Portuguese, unlike other Indian communities who speak proudly their mother-tongue in public, be it Bengali or Marathi We may consider Goans to be pagans linguistically where Konkani is concerned. And Konkani apostles like Fausto must make it their mission to convert them to Konkanism. The Goa Day gathering in Mumbai organised by him was the most opportune moment to talk to the crowd of the need to promote Konkani and to ask them to speak in Konkani today and onward, and that this is the main purpose of the World Goa Day. Also to announce that there is a Konkani- English magazine, The Goan Review, which is available at the hall and would they please buy or subscribe to it? People disinterested in Konkani will not volunteer to buy or subscribe to a Konkani magazine. Some volunteers of the Committee must go around to the tables with salesmanship to convince them why they should support the magazine. It is the only Konkani-English news magazine in India, and a very useful one I must say. If it is forced to close shop, as Fausto fears, for lack of patronage -subscriptions and advertisements, it will indeed be a great blow to real lovers of Konkani like myself, who has been a subscriber for many years. The World Goa Day has done a lot of good to the Goan communities the world over, and its existence is beyond questioning. Goa Day existed in Kuwait since 1995. But Rene Barreto internationalised it calling World Goa Day in 2000 with the help of my theme-song composed specially for it entitled: PROUD TO BE A GOAN, in whose refrain is sung the words: I love my sit-koddi and Konkani. The Day was meant to promte Konkani language and Goan culture by getting Goans together once a year, to focuss our atention on Konkani, to get our children to know and to get involved in the Konkani movement overseas particularly. The very fact that increasing number of Goans get together on this special day, in itself means a lot. In Portugal a dozen Goan Associations got together and in unity celebrated the World Goa Day with fantastic programmes. This movement there is headed by by a young university student Constantino Hermanns Xavier. Three cheers for his successful efforts.. Rene works very hard on the internet to enthuse people to speak in Konkani. He even started the Konkaniforum on the Internet so that people could read and write Konkani on the net. He has till now only 250 subscribers, on a net where you don't have to pay. So you can see how slow Goans are to react to a new idea, and more so to Konkani. But that should not prompt us to give up the project. It must not be forgotten by Fausto and likewise thinkers that World Goa Day has awakened the Goans to one solid reality

Constantino has shown great leadership qualities since I asked him to be the coordinator of WGD_PORTUGAL at the age of 20 ! He was responsible in bringing ALL the Goan Organisations in Portugal under the banner of WORLD GOA DAY , I believe Portugal was the Only Country in the world to have an ALLIANCE of GOAN Organisations ! Constantino has shown a keen interest in our theme of * GIVING BACK to GOA and the GOAN COMMUNITY * , he has also shown an interest in the welfare of Goans at large. We have the support of many Goan organisations in the formation of this WORLD GOAN YOUTH Organisation , your positive comments are always welcome , please do share them with us. TOGETHER we can make a better ... * YOUNG GOANSWORLD * rene barreto , Overall coordinator WORLD GOA DAY www.goaday.com 0 I am pleased to share the personal thoughts of Constantino Hermanns Xavier The Coordinator World Goa Day _Portugal and now the Leader of the YOUNG GOANS International ly 000 World Goa Day Portugal - Dia de Goa, Damao e Diu 2003 18th, 19th and 20th of September The goan community in Portugal celebrated for the third consecutive year World Goa Day. The attached report will give you a general overview on the three-day event, which is organized annually by a committee with representants from all 5 Goa, Daman and Diu community associations established in Portugal. But I would like to underline some aspects in particular. LETHARGY OF THE GOAN DIASPORA I have sometimes been denouncing on the Goan Internet the lethargy of the Goan diaspora around the world and the unproductive and sterile activities we Goans tend to hold in our respective communities. I think by now we're all aware of this, especially because when we travel to Goa we are hold co-responsible for what has happened to Goa (not only political corruption, but the state of health system, education, environment, heritage etc.). The best way to find out that we are sometimes no longer seen as Goans is to visit Goa, critize something and then... confront ourselves with the bitter critics (and resentment) coming from Goans living in Goa who are confronted on a daily basis with all these problems we just comfortably discuss sitting in front of a computer. I would like to call this gap between the goan diaspora and Goa responsibility. We have sometimes chosen to forget this responsibility towards our villages, our friends, our causes (not necessarily political) and brothers in Goa. Everyone is free to do so, but as soon as we deny this responsibility we should also start forgetting Goa. TO EMBRACE RESPONSIBILITY So, for those who truly want to contribute for a better Goa, there is only one choice: to embrace this responsability and put it into practice. Of course words are important, written or spoken ones, but actions are far more valious. Which actions we may ask ourselves (and I do ask this myself regularly)? Different actions. Everyone has his stronger and weaker points. His preferences and aversion or incapacity in other things. So, we may and should act differently. A Goan doctor in Moscow will therefore help differently to the development of Goa than a Goan Engineering professor in Paris. One will put his knowledge into action by helping to develop the Goan health system, the other one will put his technical know-how to the service of a Goan NGO building wells in the isolated interior of Goa. And so on. These are just some very specific examples. Basic condition is we should all get nearer to Goa again, using the media, being informed about what's happening there. This is a unique opportunity for our diaspora. We do not have to travel anymore to Goa to be Goans and to contribute to Goa. We may now establish associations, NGO's and lobbies in our local countries; we may now build economical, cultural and social bridges between Goa and our new homes. We may now truly serve Goa, even if not down there. And as more bridges we will build, as more Goans we will feel and be. Closing the large gap which separates us from Goa will bring new opportunities, and, above all, will give a chance to the future generations of the goan diaspora of keeping up and developing their goan identity. HERE IN PORTUGAL... Here in Portugal we have been laying the foundations for this. For the third consecutive year World Goa Day was celebrated here and this time we had a discussion (and specific projects) on how to give back to Goa. A special word also to the goan and damanese youth, which has organized these events and proved they are capable of

Re: [Goanet]WORLD GOA DAY PORTUGAL 2
Dear Constantino Xavier, That is a great job by a young person. No problem in shifting the Goa Day a month behind the rest of the world celebrations. In fact 20 Sept would have been better in Goa, too.August is very rainy here.We keep the date because Konkani was recognized officially as a 'language' for inclusion in the Constitution of India[ 8th schedule] Ligorio Soares at Houston[USA] at 80 and counting must be the oldest co-ordinator of WGD while you are the youngest. Age,no bar. Lucky folks to be viewing Amchem Noxib in an auditorium. Even in Goa,one has to see it on a TV.Perhaps we can use the LCD-aided 'big screen',now. 'Casa de Goa' and 'Ekvat' have some Goans I know can dance the 'mando' and 'dekni'. Have a nice time...and let us know more about it after it happens. All the best. Viva Goa. [Goanet]WORLD GOA DAY PORTUGAL:
A great MESSAGE ! ...from our Youngest WORLD GOA DAY coordinator , Constantino Hermanns Xavier. He expresses his feelings without any reservation , I do hope his POSITIVE message will be accepted by all of us as a way forward , more so by the Younger Goans. JOIN me in wishing them a great celebration. Rene Barreto www.goaday.com 00 WORLD GOA DAY PORTUGAL: DIA DE GOA, DAMCO E DIU Lisbon - Portugal, 18th, 19th and 20th of September 2003 World Goa Day is in 2003 for the third consecutive year. Everything started back in 2001, when some visitors of the Portuguese website on Goa, Supergoa.com, realized that this event started by Rene Barreto in London should also take place in Portugal. Besides historical ties between Portugal and India, there are thousands of Goans living in this country and a huge interest from the Portuguese society towards indo-portuguese culture. Goans here in Portugal (and around the world) distinguish themselves from most of the other cultural minorities due to their high level of integration, be it professional, economical or social. Which poses a dilemma to Goans living here: how to deal with our cultural baggage? Some don't even realize this choice and prefer a total or almost total integration into the Portuguese society. Others choose to preserve their distinctiveness, because they value it or because they don't have the same economical and social possibilities of integrating easily. And there is another well-known problem to what we could possibly call the goan community here in Portugal. There are differences among Goans that seem to be more self-destructive than enrichening. Until recently there were 6 associations for the Goa, Daman and Diu communities, which is estimated between 20 and 60 000 people (again the problem: who is a Goan?). Constant disputes and sometimes an inadequate or inexistent open-minded approach to the needs of the community have led to a loss of interest from young Goans and a huge gap to what is happening in today's Goa. The community is risking this way to loose it's own means of existence, because there are no longer younger people ready to continue the work of promoting goan identity and because the community has lost its ties and its responsibility towards its origins, Goa. That's why World Goa Day, at least here in Portugal, has been welcome bringing so many people together. In 2001 in a short period of one week, in the hot month of August (everyone flees from Lisbon), we gathered some 100 people from different sectors of our community during an informal goan lunch, discussing on Goan identity. In 2002 we established an organizing committee consisting of representants of all six associations, working together and coordinating a three-day event, again in August. Everyone was skeptical about our success in gathering people in the middle of August (16, 17 and 20th ). Truth is there were more than 1000 people participating in various events: a show on Goa, Daman and Diu music and dances with three groups in one of the most noble theater halls of Lisbon, the Teatro da Trindade with an assistance of around 700 people; tour in 3 buses through Lisbon's roads, avenues and historical buildings named after great Goans or places in Goa and afterwards a lunch; goan youth meeting with a carrom tournament; a conference Perceptions of Goa with the presence of writers and other well-known figures discussing how they perceive Goa through their own eyes and a closing dinner at the Goan restaurant Xanti with several guests of honour and representants and members of all 6 associations. The Portuguese media were present in most of the events and the coverage was excellent, on TV, press and radio. Even in Goa our celebrations found echo: Herald and Gomantak Times chose to publish a picture and an article on their front-page. This year we should give back to Goa once again, like Rene Barreto rightly pointed out. As a goan community living far from Goa we may not forget that we still have family, friends or just a special interest there. This year we want to close the gap which lies between our community and Goa. That's why we chose to organize a cinema festival on Goa, so we may rediscover Goa and its current challenges and needs, besides fostering the community spirit and searching for those things which keep us together as a community instead of those differences we already know about, too much. Re: [Goanet]World Goa Day
Dear Mr.Botelho, There are three English dailies in Goa; the third one is 'Gomantak Times',which has more Goa-centric news than any other English newpaper available in Goa. All Goans are not readers of English newspapers. They do not become less Goan than those that are net savvy or English reading type. We have to think of them ,too,if we want to unite. Personally, I would rather try and get a news item on world Goa Day into all the newspapers and free-sheeters like Vasco Watch and Mapusa/Panaji/Margao Plus(with a supporting advertisement ,if needed,to motivate publication of the news item) than to publish a supplement which is rather expensive and not cost effective at all. Nonetheless, your suggestion to spread the message beyond the net is very good indeed. We had exhibitions of plants during the last three years to coincide with the WGD.We did not formally link it,but brought Goans together and made them proud of being Goan. While the NRIs had cultural programmes, picnics and parties on 23 August, we focussed on the wealth of coconut, the goodness of cocnut oil and the Mexican pest that is playing hell with coconuts during the last three years. We even published a book to inform the goans who have coconut trees how to rid themselves of this problem. We also showed them how to enjoy tender coconut water intead of getting kidney stones by not consuming enough water because of the jaundice scare and the detection of pesticide residues in almost all brands of bottled Mineral Water and soft drinks in Delhi and Maharashtra,Pepsi and Coke inclusive.Tender coconut water is packed by Nature in a cent percent biodegradable container. The world is growing tender, are we? Finally, would you contribute in part for the issue of supplement/advertising support? [Goanet]World Goa Day A cultural eye opener and binding force
Young Stan a Goa Day participant in Macau once wrote in a school competition as being a tree among the paddy fields. This years first Goa Day and the Konkani mass were an eye opener to Goan identity and culture for young Goans such as Stan. The various celebrations world wide is another example that Goans can bind themselves forgetting petty and immature differences that often prevail in Goan society. Rene Barreto has shown us the way, it is important that young Goans participate actively in future Goa Days celeberations. B. Colaço __ Yahoo! --- Welcome to the FRIDAY BALCAO --- Dear Cybergaokars on GoaNet, Greetings on World Goa Day !! Friday Balcao the fortnightly discussion event to be held on 22nd August will feature the topic Giving back to Goa the theme of the World GOA Day 2003. The discussion will have a sharing by Goans overseas and those who have returned to Goa, on ways and means of contributing to the socio- cultural, economic and political well being and future of the State and its people. Re: [Goanet]WORLD GOA DAY, 2003 CELEBRATIONS AT ASSOCIACAO ACADEMICA DEMOIRA ( A report)
Gabe: Cheap skates, I would have donated a bottle of Whisky.! Flo : Sure Gabe, you are welcome. Only, we do not skate that much here in Goa, for our roads are in bad shape. And if you mean ice skates, then sorry we in Goa cannot afford more than a block of ice at a time. Gabe: We throw away whisky bottles here, in the West. Flo : We are better off here in Goa then you are in your West. We throw away not only whisky bottles but all sorts of other liquor bottles too. And the scrap collectors take them away free of cost. ## # Send submissions for Goanet to [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # PLEASE remember to stay on-topic (related to Goa), and avoid top-posts # # More details on Goanet at http://joingoanet.shorturl.com/ # # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ##

[Goanet]WORLD GOA DAY, 2003 CELEBRATIONS AT ASSOCIACAO ACADEMICA DE MOIRA ( A report)
16th August evening was fun time at the 'Moira Club' (as it is commonly called). Members with their families and their guest started arriving from 7:30 pm. For technical reasons, the club does not have a permanent bar licence. And since spot licences take the toll being exhorbitant, members and their guest cater to themselves with their own booze, with other items including snacks etc. available off the counter. It was the biggest gathering so far with around 120 people, with the kids kicking the football around on the badmington court and the adults mixing around, dancing to the Goan folk/pop/medley CD music. The games were specially entertaining with 10 teams of 7 each trying to match the ten sets of Herald newspapers containing 14 thoroughly mixed pages. The winning team got the whiskey bottle to the cheers and shouts. Then there was the horse race, with the betting and the cheering being great fun. There after the dinner was served. The evening was alive and the World Goa Day fully celebrated untill 12 pm with members and guest making promisses to return the next year for a bigger and better organised World Goa Day celebrations. It is to be remembered that the Moira Club is one of the oldest clubs in Goa, set up in the early 1920s. It boasts of a heritage club building with a full size football ground and a badmington court with a recently built stage, in front , and a big enough space behind to accomodate a couple of tennis courts, presently used for parking. The club has come alive after a long gap of dormancy with a brand new constitution and managing committee of 11 members elected for a two year term on pannel basis. For the last 3 terms (present term included) the club has been running under the efficient dynamic stewartship of Mr. Romeo Coelho (Ex- BT UK) as its President. A thought for the Day: 17th. August, 2003 has been dedicated by the Catholic Church as JUSTICE SUNDAY with a message that Justice leads to Peace, and Peace leads to Love ## # Send submissions for Goanet to [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # PLEASE remember to stay on-topic (related to Goa), and avoid top-posts # # More details on Goanet at http://joingoanet.shorturl.com/ # # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ##
[Goanet]World Goa Day 2003 - Felicitations from Kuwait.
Dear Friends, Even as we celebrate World Goa Day 2003 on 20th August 03, I, feel proud to be a part of such a uique global celebration, aimed at uniting Goans worldwide. Goemkarancho Ekvott' is the key to our success, so let us all, in our own little way, try to achieve it, for the greater glory of Goa and Goans. The words of Mr. Rene Baretto, Together we can make it happen are very inspirational, and I do not see any reason why we cannot make it happen. All that is required is a strong will power and it is done. So let us do it, one more time, Viva WORLD GOA DAY 2003! On this auspicious occassion, I, on behalf of the Managing Committee of the Goan Welfare Society and all it's members, extend hearty greetings to the organisers of World GaoaDay 2003 and to all those who participate in the grand celebrations. Goans in Kuwait will celebrate their grand 9th Annual Goa Day this year on 10th of October 2003, in all its gaiety and pomposity. All are welcome to join in the celebrations at Indian Arts Circle, Kuwait. Viva Goa! Long Live Goemkarancho Ekvott!! World Goa Day zindabad!!! Cheers! [Goanet]WORLD GOA DAY
000 From the WORLD GOA DAY webiste godfrey j. i. gonsalves www.goaday.com 00 WORLD GOA DAY How does one recognise a Goan worldwide? First ones goan look, then the language Konkani. Then questions follow a) which Taluka ? b) which village and finally c) which waddo? All these answers cleared. Then follows a warm hug. But then your personal dossier opens up. The roots beginning from Adam and Eve will be discovered so that we aim to find how closely one is related. Here the Goan fakes out. First those who matter will be listed as close relatives, whether they are distant or mere acquaintances via surnames. It does not matter which lineal order ascending or descending. Whether through inlaws or outlaws. Next you are quizzed on the traditional occupation of yourancestors or Mundcaror Bhatcar status and then the bitter truth which CASTE?Here the truth is revealed and the Goan if not of identical caste hates to hear see much of the other Goan. But wait a minute is the social stratification on caste lines not the result of we being converts of the Hindu social order? Come off it, this is a fact an indelible mark no matter what religion preaches. WE MUST OVERCOME this fear of CASTE which divides Goans worlwide one . If WORLD GOA DAY can break this barrier by ACCEPTING ones traditional occupation, social status, mundacar or bhatkar iand caste in 2003 and the years that follows Goans can be UNITED. Can the Goans groups associations accept this ground reality ? godfrey j. i. gonsalves borda - margao goa india [EMAIL PROTECTED] 98221585854 000 ## # Send submissions for Goanet to [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # PLEASE remember to stay on-topic (related to Goa), and avoid top-posts # # More details on Goanet at http://joingoanet.shorturl.com/ # # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ##
RE: [Goanet] WORLD GOA DAY 2003
Hello all, Well Canadian Goan Clubs will be on track soon. I am still in touch with G.O.A. Toronto but since they have their big event ViVa Goa very close, I say give them some more time to come out with results. I am still trying to establish link with Vancouver Goans though some friends of mine. Will keep you posted. They hope that Goans from Vancouver will join them too. Your SUPPORT will be OUR SUCCESS Gilbert Lawrence writes: Great job President Wilson Soares and the G.O.A. of Calgary and Vancouver. Great programs. Do you know when your and our compadres in Greater Toronto Area are hosting their World Goa Day celebration? We can then put the dates on our calendar and collaborate with our neighbors to the north making it an international event. ## # Send submissions for Goanet to [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # PLEASE remember to stay on-topic (related to Goa), and avoid top-posts # # More details on Goanet at http://joingoanet.shorturl.com/ # # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ## ___ Goanet mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.goanet.org/mailman/listinfo/goanet
