[Goanet-News] Rechristening of Goa (Andrew Pereira, ToI)
Rechristening of Goa Andrew Pereira, TNN, May 20, 2010, 03.49am IST PANAJI: The names they are a changin’. In a reflection of the demographic changes the state is undergoing, new colonies and wards being carved out in Goa’s towns and villages are more likely to call themselves some nagar or the other instead of the traditional vaddo. Nagar is not a native word. It is a suffix given to the name of a settlement in other parts of India, mostly North India, says horticulturist Miguel Braganza who is passionate about local history. Forgive a Saxttikar if he looks askance at hearing of the existence of a Kargil in Sao Jose de Areal, or a Bardezkar of being asked to look for a Shanti Nagar in Socorro. A few years ago, locals in Sao Jose de Areal did wake up to find that a part of their village was named Kargil by migrants living there. The name was even displayed on local buses, serving the migrant population in the area, until the south Goa district administration put an end to it. In Mapusa, a young student at St Xavier's college was amused to see the address of his rented house on his electricity bill. Situated behind the college premises, the house address on the bill read Fukat Nagar. Trust the politicians not to be behind in their quest to leave a legacy. A field in Margao, locally known as Calgonda, was given away for a slum settlement and christened Babu Nagar. Subsequently, the migrants changed it to Azad Nagar. On Betim’s hills north of the River Mandovi exists a Ram Nagar, while every second new colony in Porvorim is being termed as a nagar. Says history lecturer Prajal Sakhardande, Ram Nagar is a village in Belgaum. On Porvorim plateau, the new colonies that have sprung up are Jai Nagar, Vidya Nagar and Shanti Nagar. Recently, a landscape contractor said he was executing a project at a Patel Nagar in Porvorim. The village of Socorro has been given a Shanti Nagar and a Sai Nagar, courtesy a government scheme to convert comunidade land for housing plots. Another government scheme, ostensibly to give land to Goans from the lower income group, but which was lapped up by migrants, was named Indira Nagar in Chimbel. There’s another Fukat Nagar created in Sancoale and existing for years. The migrants have constructed illegal huts on comunidade land and are not paying a single paisa for it. Neither are they contributing anything by way of government taxes. Hence, the name Fukat Nagar which has been accepted by those concerned, says social activist Simon Carvalho. After Zuari industries came in and called the land Zuari Nagar, the trend was followed by others. Today, besides our vaddos, we have a Shanti Nagar, a Upas Nagar and a Queeny Nagar, Carvalho says. Travel to Assonora by bus, and you will hear the conductors calling it Alsanwadi, says Braganza, adding, The migrant labourers living in the village call it by that name, and the bus conductors have already adapted to it for their customers. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/City/Goa/Rechristening-of-Goa/articleshow/5951467.cms
[Goanet-News] Naxalism and Goa (Sandesh Prabhudesai, Goanews.org)
Naxalism and Goa Sandesh Prabhudesai -- Mr Prime Minister has indirectly admitted that poverty is the cause of rising Naxalism. The developmental schemes are not reaching them, due to corruption, leakages and lack of transparency. He also suggests indirectly that only realistic pro-people governance can neutralise rising Naxalism, and not mere gun force. -- The deadly word Naxalite is once again in the news, after one Orissa-based 25-year old Shambhu Deck, belonging to an outfit Maowadi Trishul Manch, was arrested in Goa last week. He was found moving among the Orissa-based workers working in different factories here. The tip off came from the Orissa police. Goa police nabbed him, along with his accomplice Rajendra. Police also rounded up hundreds of other workers, but later released them. The information we got from the police sources was that Shambhu's Naxalite outfit is working among the Adivasis in Sundergarh district of Orissa. The main issue they had taken up was increasing alcoholism among the tribals. To end it, they had taken an extreme step of killing one such liquor supplier. Orissa's Naxalite movement is not a new phenomenon. In fact it took me back to the famous Marathi play, written by Anil Barve in 1975 - Thank You Mr Glad. Based on a life of then doctor-turned-Naxalite Nagbhushan Patnaik, the play had glorified Veerbhushan Patnaik, the Naxalite in the play. The play had made waves in Marathi and Gujarati theatre. Sundergarh is one of the Naxalite-infected 30 tribal districts of Orissa. It's on a border of both Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. The plight of tribals, peasants and landless labourers has resulted into left extremists gaining ground in these areas. There are many outfits working in these areas. I tried to search for Maowadi Trishul Manch. The Google search is full with only one news - MTM leader Shambhu Beck arrested in Goa. I went through some research articles on Naxalite movement in Orissa. It lists out many Marxist-Leninist groups (called Naxalite since ‘70s and Maoists nowadays). But no mention of MTM... But our local media speculated a lot. The prime speculation among these was whether Naxalite movement has some roots in Goa. Even our state chief secretary has asked the police to investigate into this angle. The investigation is fine. It is a must. But simply jumping to a conclusion that Naxalism has started taking roots in Goa appears premature. Naxalite movement cannot be equated to the movements of religious fanatics or terrorist outfits, just because all three believe in violence. That does not mean violence by Naxalites is justified and by others is unjustified. Any violence is unjustified, including the war! But Naxalite movement has always grown with middle class leftist intellectuals identifying themselves with the poor, downtrodden, neglected and exploited - may it be peasants, workers, landless labourers, tribals etc. It grows in underdeveloped areas, where the locals are exploited beyond imagination. The struggle between ‘Haves' and ‘Have-Nots' thus takes a violent turn with armies of both the camps battling with each other. It literally becomes an internal battlefield... with killings and blood all over... This is not a sheer imagination of mine. Even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh admits it. Let's read the following quotes of the PM, who made a speech last month on Civil Services Day function in the national capital. QUOTE: Underscoring the fact that Left-wing extremism was flourishing in under-developed areas of the country, Manmohan Singh asked the civil servants to ensure that no area of the country is denied the benefits of the government's developmental programs. But we cannot overlook the fact that many areas in which such extremism flourishes are under-developed and many of the people, mainly poor tribals, who live in these areas have not shared equitably in the fruits of development. It is incumbent upon us to ensure that no area of our country is denied the benefits of our ambitious developmental programs, the Prime Minister said. He asked them to devise innovative ways and means to harness the tools of information technology and to involve the intended beneficiaries in implementation so that complaints of leakages, corruption and lack of transparency get addressed. Manmohan Singh said that inclusive growth was the centrepiece of the developmental agenda of the UPA and fast economic growth provided the government with the resources to address the problems of poverty, ignorance and disease. UNQUOTE The issues and problems highlighted by our prime minister, in this speech, are: 1.Many areas are still underdeveloped 2.These areas are denied benefits of government's developmental programme 3.People in these areas, mainly poor tribals, have not shared equitably in the fruits of development 4.Benefits don't reach the people due to leakages, corruption and lack of transparency 5.Thus exists there poverty, ignorance and

BC The Goan elite of the Colonial era were incestuously bound together by an impenetrable clanship, which made them mini-islands segregated from the impurity of labouring Goa. Their walls lined with leather-bound books from France and Lisbon, their larders stocked with imported wines and their sojourns in European colleges had produced some of the finest intellectuals on the Indian sub-continent but this intellectual and material wealth did not in any way permeate to the vast sections of Goan society who meandered without the benefit of education and privilege. There were in fact, two Goas mutually sharing earth space but living parallel lives for all purposes.

[Goanet] Nadia Dourado is dead R.I.P.
Received the following tragic news from a Goanetter in Saudi:- Nadia Dourado is dead 2010-05-31 Nadia Dourado is dead. The young woman who was the romantic interest or very good friend of a South Goa minister had consumed a tube full of Ratol, a powerful rat poison. It is an open secret who the minister is because he kept rushing up and down between Goa and Mumbai, while she was struggling for life in a Mumbai hospital. Nadia is reported to have told the magistrate in Mumbai that she mistook the Ratol for toothpaste and squeezed it on her toothbrush. The doctors however said that she had consumed the entire tube. Now the minister should have been careful. He should have read the instructions on the tube. Precaution- Keep away from Children and Pets. For many days Nadia was known as Victim/patient, 28F. She was hospitalised since the 15th of May. She was treated in Mumbai, then flown to Chennai for a reported liver transplant, but died there. Nadia was well known in Loutulim. She was a very attractive young lady who used to drive an SUV at speed. Locals used to point her out as the love interest of the South Goa Minister. NGO to CM: Sack minister or face massive uprising 2010-05-31 After the death of Nadia Dourado, the NGO Savera spokesperson Tara Kerkar called for the sacking of the heavyweight minister. She has promised a massive uprising of all women's rights organization if the CM does not sack the minister. She holds the minister responsible for Nadia's death by playing around with her medical treatment. She asks the Chief Minister what he is doing for women in Goa. She has given him a deadline of 24 hours to sack the minister. If he does not, she promises a huge agitation on the Secretariat. Kerkar stated that the girl was first taken to Apollo Victor Hospital, then taken to Mumbai, then to Chennai. All this rapid shifting around did not allow the victim to have proper medical treatment, which may have been the aim all along of the minister in question, alleges Kerkar. It looks like murder, she said. Kerkar will be taking the case to the Human Rights Commission too. COMMENT: Why is the press in Goa so concerned about the Minister Pacheco? -- DEV BOREM KORUM Gabe Menezes.
[Goanet] Tarvotteanchim bondolam
Very interesting to read some of the remarks over my reference to 'Tarvotteachim bondollam' used in my open questions to Churchill Alemao. I am definitely not the first one to use the phrase but people tell me that there is a konkani song with this theme. In my childhood the phrase was used very often. But what is of little surprise is that instead of debating upon the primary contents we Goans choose are experts at diverting the focus and clinging to the irrelevant. No one denies that Tarvottis and gulfies did not improve their own living conditions and educate their children. But besides improving their economic status and personal social status, what has been their meaningful contribution to the over all political, social and cultural development of this State? They brought in the money and hoarded it in the banks? Did they not start off the rat race with other less fortunate Goans trying to imitate them and resorting to beg, borrow or steal to also improve their economic status? Did this lifestyle not trigger off a mistaken notion of economic and social empowerment in Goa? Who is it that danced with the politicians to get benefits as sailors and NRIs from the politicians? Did all this not trigger off a feeling among Goans that migrating abroad gives benefits of special government status for the dollars they bring in, while those who stay on and serve their own State and country get nothing? These are the issues that need to be discussed. -Soter D'Souza
Re: [Goanet] these f****g overseas Goans from the cozy comfort
MT, I resist using the word ghatis (its used in Mumbai to describe Maharastrans)...in Goa, the g^^ are the new Goans, indeed. I recently witnessed two incidents: one where a Goan photo-studio owner was roughed up by some g^^ (really tough looking guys who were summoned by a woman within minutes, because she wanted some misplaced pictures)...this may have never happened in the old days and I was surprised I stood silently, stunned this was even happening. The other incident happened at the Vasco city bus stand (I go there to buy chooris'em), a young Goan boy bad mouthed a conductr/driver/'clinder'the man ran after him and roughed him up a little, a crowd gathered and the conductr/driver/'clinder' got a small roughing up...the young Goan got on his mobile...the conductr/driver/'clinder' went on his knees begging him not to 'create trouble'. I do not know what happened after but, in the old days, any g^ would think ten times before touching a Goichi. Not now. The g^ think we are cowards. The 'Goans are c** ' was phrased by one Fr. Premand Dessai (originally Morias of Cuncolim, a jesuit) when he did the march from Mangor Hill in Vasco.this lead to the non-Goans get out of Goa riots of 1984 or 85 I think. As for the new Goans, they will continue our Concani tradition, believe it or not. Goichis have moved to English ('come soon no, the seat will go..') sadly, and a poor one at that. I think the overseas Goans can do something to support Concani (posting shortly). Other than that, it seems rather hopeless in my view. Pandu Lampiao, how very true. The Goichis from Goa have indeed forgotten their identity and have become Goichi Ghanti's. They have no guts and indeed are afraid of the true Ghanti's who seem to have taken over Goa and are indeed the NEW Goichis. They even resent us their true brother Goichi's criticizing us for raising awareness to the fact that the Goan identity and way of life is rapidly degenerating into Gantiism. Vatican official tells paedophile priests to expect damnation Monsignor Charles Scicluna warns seminarians who exploit their office that their punishment in hell will be worse than death penalty on earth The Vatican http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/vatican official in charge of catching paedophile priests has said their punishment in hell would be worse than receiving the death penalty on earth. Monsignor Charles Scicluna issued the warning to seminarians at St Peter's basilica, in Rome, during prayers for abuse victims. Quoting Gregory the Great, an early pope and monk who laid down rules for the clergy, he said a paedophile priest who exploited his office would get tougher treatment in hell than a layman. It would be really better for him that his evil deeds cause him death under secular laws, he said. Scicluna added that those who hurt children should be thrown into the sea with a millstone around their neck. In his sermon, he also suggested that priests who covered up abuse committed by colleagues would also face the fires of hell. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/may/30/vatican-paedophile-priests-punishment-catholicism/print -- DEV BOREM KORUM Gabe Menezes.
[Goanet] Fwd: Navelim sabha demands Alemao’s apology over squealing remark
http://www.oheraldo.in/news/Local%20News/Navelim-sabha-demands-Alemao-rsquo-s-apology-over-squealing-remark/37377.html # HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, MAY 30 PWD Minister Churchill Alemao’s infamous statement calling Goans as squealing pigs came in for condemnation at the Navelim gram sabha on Sunday. At the meeting, gram sabha took strong exception to the statement made by the local MLA, terming Goans as squealing pigs. Expressing their shock over the statement, the gram sabha members said that Goans in general are hurt by Alemao’s statement and demanded that the PWD Minister withdraw his comment. Some members also demanded that the PWD Minister also tender an unconditional apology to the Goan people for his statement. “We are deeply hurt over the statement made by the PWD Minister. He should immediately take back his statement”, he added. The Sunday gram sabha also took strong objection to the decision of the Navelim Panchayat body to approve a mega housing project at Nagmodem ward. Members demanded to know how the panchayat has approved the project despite objections from the villagers. After many discussions, the gram sabha members adopted a resolution demanding that the Panchayat body revoke the construction license forthwith. The meeting also questioned the sarpanch over the land filling activity on the Nagmodem grounds and demanded action against the same. On the mushrooming handcarts and kiosks in the village, the gram sabha members demanded that the panchayat crack a whip against the illegal handcarts and kiosks. They demanded that the panchayat finds out whether any kiosk and handcarts from neighbouring Margao Municipal Council are operating within the jurisdiction of the Navelim Village Panchayat. Sarpanch Paul Pereira assured the members that the Panchayat would take serious note of the sentiments of the gram sabha and initiate action against the illegal vendors. On the mega housing project, the Sarpanch said that the resolution passed for the revocation of the construction license would be placed before the gram sabha meeting for an appropriate decision. Commenting on the points raised by the members on the land filling activity at the Nagmodem ground, the sarpanch said the Panchayat had only issued the permission for the development of the ground and not for any land filling. -- Please post your comments on my Blog: http://goanidentity.blogspot.com/ Please also see below: 1. [Goanet] Sound Detectives – monday muse (31 M ay’10)
MONDAY MUSE (31 May 2010) SOUND DETECTIVES Sensory awareness plays a crucial role in Out Bound Training. One such activity is called Sound Detectives. Participants are asked to close their eyes and listen. They are told to detect the various sounds that they can hear… the nearest one… the farthest one… the loudest… the softest… eventually they open their eyes and share their experience. The Sound Detectives activity is also done at Hall based Training, but the detectable sounds and their distance from the listener gets limited. The activity is best done in the wild or areas away from man-made-machine sounds. Participants are amazed to discover the range of sounds that they can detect… right from those of small insects to sounds of trucks that ply in the distant. This experience holds valuable lessons of how to be better at the skill of listening. It shows that the onus of listening is primarily on the listener. To be better at listening we must be able to shut off all distractions and focus on our sense of hearing. Our ability to hear reaches and stretches far beyond our own expectations… if we would only listen! Learn to listen and listen to learn – is a motto profound Let’s BE BETTER at detecting the surrounding sound! - Pravin

[Goanet] Goa minister under cloud after alleged partner dies
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/ Goa minister under cloud after alleged partner diesIANS, May 31, 2010, 10.40am IST PANAJI: Goa's tourism minister Mickky Pacheco, who faces charges of bigamy, has been dragged into controversy again after a 28-year-old woman, allegedly his third partner, died at a Chennai hospital. Women activists and the opposition have demanded a thorough probe into the death of Nadia Torreado in Chennai on unday, 15 days after she consumed rat poison. It is not mere suicide. Nadia's case should be investigated as murder, Tara Kerkar, an activist based in south Goa, told IANS. She was later shifted to a clinic in Mumbai and then to Chennai by the minister who wanted to treat her secretly, fearing consequences if her consumption of poison became public, Kerkar has alleged. We want the police to investigate this case as a murder because no proper care was taken when she was being shifted to different hospitals across the country, Kerkar further said. Women's groups have demanded that Chief Minister Digambar Kamat hold a formal inquiry into the suspicious death and make the report public within two days. Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar has also joined the chorus asking for a thorough probe into the death of the 28-year-old woman. The death should be investigated thoroughly. What is this government coming to? Parrikar told IANS. When asked for his comment, Pacheco, a leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), only said: It is a very unfortunate incident. The deceased was a friend of the family. It is a sad day. When asked to comment on allegations that medical negligence caused by his repeated shifting of Torreado from one hospital to another could have resulted in her death, Pacheco said: We acted strictly on medical advice so that she could get the best of health. The allegations are politically motivated. Sources said Torreado, who was admitted to a nursing home in Mumbai prior to being shifted to Chennai, has already told a special executive magistrate that she consumed the poison by mistake. Records at the Apollo Victor Hospital in Margao, where she was admitted initially , state that Torreado had consumed an entire tube of the poisonous paste meant to kill rodents. Pacheco, a controversial minister, has been accused of bigamy by his first wife Sara. The case is in the trial stage. COMMENT: Very unfortunate indeed and a sad day for Micky. He should put up his hand and admit his relationship. Under the circumstances which Church will bury her ? Micky will have to get his friend in Colva to do the necessary. -- DEV BOREM KORUM Gabe Menezes.
Re: [Goanet] FELLOWSHIP--Navayana-Avarna to sponsor Dalit/Adivasi candidates for book publishing course
[From Sabrina Buckwalter sb2...@columbia.edu to SAI list.] Navayana-Avarna fellowship for National Book Trust Publishing Course, July 2010 In 2009, Navayana sponsored five Dalit/Adivasi candidates for the Edit-Pub diploma course at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, as Avarna fellows. This year, Navayana shall sponsor the enrollment of five Dalit/Adivasi candidates at the National Book Trust’s four-week Training Course in Book Publishing (in English) in New Delhi. The details of the comprehensive course, where the best professionals from the publishing industry teach, are available at the link below. Also please find the course details and the application there as well, under the heading, Delhi. http://www.nbtindia.org.in/innerPage.aspx?aspxerrorpath=/training_course_in_bookpublishing.aspx Last date for application submission: 10 June 2010. Course dates: 5 July to 31 July 2010. Course time: 9:30a.m to 5:00p.m, Monday to Saturday. Venue: Conference Room, National Book Trust 5, Institutional Area, Vasant Kunj, Phase II New Delhi – 110070 http://www.nbtindia.org.in Candidates must apply directly to NBT as instructed on the NBT website. There is no entrance test; any graduate may apply. There is no age limit. Navayana shall play no role in the selection of the candidates. Candidates who happen to be Dalit/Adivasi and are selected by NBT may then apply to Navayana for financial support (ava...@navayana.org and an...@navayana.org). Navayana shall pay the course fee (Rs 5,000) for up to five Dalit/Adivasi candidates. NBT this year is also arranging accommodation for outstation candidates at Rs 3,000 for four weeks. Navayana shall also subsidize this amount. In all, the net value of the Avarna Fellowship shall be Rs 8,000. NBT also has an internship program for promising students from which the selected Avarna fellows could benefit. Publishing as a Career Publishing in India is rarely seen as a career option by young people. The publishing industry in India, with an annual output of 85,000 titles in more than 30 languages, has an estimated value of USD 1.2 billion. After the UK and the US, India is the publisher of the largest number of titles in English language. There’s an array of multinationals and independent, niche publishers who offer exciting and intellectually stimulating careers in the world of books. Unfortunately in India there are few professional publishing courses that offer an insight into the world of publishing. The NBT short-term course is one of the few professionally conducted courses being offered in the country. Alumni from the NBT course have achieved great success in the publishing industry. For instance, the current editorial head of HarperCollins India is a product of this course. Like other private sectors in India, publishing too has been the preserve of the social elite. Dalits and Adivasis hence go almost unrepresented in this field. For many Dalits/Adivasis, publishing does not even seem to be a career option. Navayana, with the Avarna fellowship, seeks to address this anomaly. Navayana therefore encourages Dalits and Adivasis graduates to proactively apply for he NBT course, and on selection, subsequently for the Navayana-Avarna fellowship. [Goanet] Fwd: injustice to an activist (opposing MOPA)
-- Forwarded message -- From: Siddarth Karapurkar preserve...@gmail.com Date: 30 May 2010 08:32 Subject: Fwd: injustice to an activist Mr Narayan Gadekar ended his hunger strike after the SDPO Mapusa 1 called him to his office and assured him that all his demands will be met with . After 3 days of fasting outside the mamlatdar office in pernem to protest against injustice metted out to him. Some people had encroached into Mr Gadekar's property and build illegal houses for which later demolition order was passed by authorities , but the demolition was not carried out instead Mr Gadekar was beaten up by goons and owners of the illegal houses. This was done with backing from political people as mr Gadekar supported and was a petitioner along with other villagers to save their land being grabbed in the name of mopa airport. The police supported the goons leaving Gadekar high and dry.

But besides improving their economic status and personal social status, what has been their meaningful contribution to the over all political, social and cultural development of this State? They brought in the money and hoarded it in the banks? --- This is why I grow fearful for Goa. There are a lot of people making a lot of noise in Goa, who have no understanding of how economies work and I'm afraid it's becoming a bit of the blind leading the blind, and in the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king. Let me give Soter a brief lesson in Economics 101. The money that the tarvottis and Gulfies brought and hoarded in their banks is absolutely essential to growth. The bank then lends this hoarded money or what they call in economics the savings (a healthy rate of saving being essential in a functioning economy) and lends it out for investment purposes at a favourable lending rate (also essential in a functioning economy), which is how investment and development takes place. All that Soter sees around him in Goa today is the result of that tarvotti and Gulf money, that he so sneers at. As for tarvottis and Gulfkars heralding the moral degradation of Goa, what is it these people should have done? Stayed in Goa, spending long hours at the local gaddi, then become sarpanches and bleeding people dry with bribes and black-mail. Tarvottis and Gulfkars are doing honest work onboard the ships and in the Gulf. The sort of work, if those left in Goa ever did, they would die of exhaustion within a week. Soon, they would return to touring the beach shacks on their bikes, looking for White British aunties who will pay for their drinks. Soter you should be ashamed of yourself for writing this about tarvottis and Gulfkars, when these boys of ours have literally Saved Goa, unlike the sarpanches who line up outside their doors the moment they return for hand-outs. best, selma

[Goanet] Fwd: Todays Herald The Parody of our Melody by Peter Fernandes
-- *The Parody of Our Melody* *Greed and power has corrupted society, and we cannot recognize the original melody, writes PETER FERNANDES* It is an empirical experience, as well as a scientific confirmation, that everything in the cosmos is connected to each other with precise accuracy for a perfect harmony. The whole universe is tuned in such a way by the “unmoved mover,” that if there the slightest diversion from its course, a great disruption will result. Philosophers delved deeply into this mystery to create awareness for humans to conduct themselves to achieve the highest goal, on earth and hereafter. Therefore, the thought process of communities should be in conformity with the rhythm of the natural world in order to perceive the wisdom of the Creator, and desire to possess it for peaceful and purposeful living. If we aren’t wise to learn this valuable lesson, it would produce a parody of our melody. The captivating melody of Goa, which was created by its natural beauty and peace loving people, has rather hastily lost its charm, in the last few decades. During Goa’s yesteryears, this melody resounded far and wide, with creative notes on its scale, the notes of peace and harmony, welcoming all to partake of sublime dwelling, and encounter the bliss that refreshes a restless soul. Being aware or unaware, is not the question. The disintegration of this scale would have adverse consequences for the present generation, and the musical notes of their heritage would be lost for the generations to come. It is imperative to maintain the rhythm of life, to sustain the dynamic of the community to achieve prosperity for all, drawing citizens together to dance to the “Great Harmony” of nature and all creation. However, if some decide to compose their own selfish rhythm, and impose it on the rest of the community without properly fashioning the notes on the scale for all to read and follow, chaos ensues and the entire orchestra falls apart. The PWD Minister, Mr. Churchill Alemao, who masquerades as the saviour of Goa, has proved on several occasions, just the opposite. Churchill Alemao’s entry into the political world itself is a question mark, which he should have pondered on and corrected long ago. He is responsible for the parody of our political melody, ever since he wedged himself into Goa’s political circle, as we call him the Ex Chief Minister of Goa. Although, the PWD Minister defiles the formal education required for the political position he holds, he is able to muscle the will of Goans on his own terms. In the process, all wisdom is lost in the chaotic world of deception created by our corrupt politicians, leading Goans to dance to a different beat out of fear and nepotism. The recent headline “Churchill backs Raheja’s project,” does not surprise me, and should not surprise the well informed people of Goa. He is concerned about the builders, who fill their pockets extravagantly; but the pocket of wellbeing for Goa, no one fills, and he is not bothered about the hole that remains there. Still, he wants to come across as a saviour. The PWD Minister said he strongly demanded that Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat, come out with a policy on mega housing projects, even as “he favoured low cost housing to meet the requirements of the common man.” What caused the hike in land prices and houses in Goa in the first place? Is he attuned to the cry of the common man? Now, he envisions the common man as security guards; watchmen to provide security for the rich immigrants. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Goans, be prepared to take on this new profession, and be ready to dance to the music of your saviour: “Save Goa Front.” The Deputy Speaker of Goa brazenly discriminated against Goans for their lack of intuition to appreciate and admire the sublime beauty of Goa, during his birthday celebration, in Velsao. He said that outsiders are happy and excited to have a glimpse of its loveliness, even if it is through a small window. Besides being obstinate, he denied the fact that Goa’s beauty consists of sublime nature, and, the warm peace loving people, who inhabited this land. He praised one construction firm for selecting the most attractive spots to sell the view of Goa. He is the same minister who claims innocence by citing ignorance of the law, as he shells out crores of rupees worth of electricity of private firms. All this is at the cost of depriving revenue to the State, and limiting the supply of efficient electricity to our citizens. This is not a triviality, but a tragedy. Who in their right mind wants to deprive the State of its revenue, and divest the citizens? As expected, the payback received by the ministers from these firms has not been revealed. It is left to speculation, which means , it may or may not be true, for we are not attuned to listen to that kind of music from its core. I request Goans to perfect the
[Goanet] Governor of West Bengal, Mr. M.K. Narayanan visits Goa Chitra, Museum of the people
Governor of West Bengal, Mr. M.K. Narayanan visits Goa Chitra By Victor Hugo Gomes Goa Chitra, Goa’s first Ethnographic museum at Benaulim, Goa was graced by the Governor of West Bengal, His Excellency Mr. M.K. Narayanan, on the 30th of May, 2010. The distinguished Governor arrived in the state yesterday as a special guest at the Gomanta Vibhushan award ceremony that was held to honor Dr. Kakodkar at a ceremony held in Panjim. Amidst his tight schedule he made time to visit the Goa Chitra museum, Benaulim. Mr. Narayanan was accompanied by his wife and Ms. Pamela Mascarenhas from the tourism department. On arrival he was welcomed by Mrs. Aldina Gomes, Director of the museum and Ms. Maria Gomes Rebello, Chairperson, South Goa Z.P. Photos: http://bit.ly/aSx7s7 He was taken on a comprehensive tour around the museum by curator Victor Hugo Gomes, taking keen interest in the artifacts and the science behind every agrarian implement as well as other objects in the collection that showcase Goa’s rich cultural past. His Excellency was very impressed with the sustainable organic farm and how it tied to the museum’s objectives to collect, preserve and pay tribute to Goa's unique heritage for future generations. A former national security advisor, Mr. M.K. Narayanan was fascinated by Victor’s dedication and effort to singlehandedly collect, preserve, and document and display the collection through self funding. In his message the Governor noted the following: “It is amazing what we can achieve with dedication, drive and the support of your family. Goa Chitra is history, philosophy, religion and ecology all worked into one. It is a journey into our ancient past indicating how modern our forefathers were in knowing how environment and nature works. Keep it up”. Victor explained that the genesis of the museum began many years ago when he started collecting old, discarded implements and tools from attics and storerooms because he was saddened to see reminders of a way of life disappear. But as the collection grew, he was awed by the richness of the culture and heritage that these objects represented, and the knowledge and skills of our forefathers. His quest to collect objects and artifacts led him to travel the length and breadth of Goa, to the remotest of villages, speaking to the village elders, documenting the ethnicity and rituals associated with every item. The governor expressed his surprise that no local body had taken interest in coming forward to provide funding to the museum. It is an amazing collection that reflects the history, culture, science and technology that prevailed in Goa. This gentleman needs our support and I shall do what I can in my power to support this museum and its ideas.” Since the opening of the museum on 2nd November 2009, Goa Chitra has been graced by many distinguished guests that include the Union Minister of Tourism, Ms. Kumari Selja, the Governor of Goa, His Excellency Dr. S.S. Sidhu, the Nobel Laureate Orhan Pamuk, winner of the Man Booker Prize, Kiran Desai, astronomer and Padmabhushan Awardee, Dr. Jayant Vishnu Narlikar, Padma Bhushan and renowned Indian poet, lyricist and director Sampooran Singh Kalra Gulzar, eminent Indian poets Dr. Surjit Patar, Prof. Naseem Shafai, Ms. Sukhvinder Amrit, Dr. Arabinda Mitra, Executive Director, Indo-US Science and Technology Forum, Union Tourism secretary Mr. Sujit Banerjee etc. To preview the collection Goa Chitra has had over 25,000 people visit the museum and has gained local as well as national media attention. This project is recognised as an international product and has been the recipient of two International awards. The Fundacao Orient scholarship 2009 (Portugal) and the V.X. [Goanet] Lionroars - Learn from the young
*Vanxim Vanquished* Jelton Fernandes, all of just 17, is one of those few concerned citizens in an apathetic Goa I keep writing about in this column. He lives on Vanxim island tucked away north-west off Divar island and in the news these days because of the literally thousands of tons of sand that is being illegally extracted in the stretch from the old Captain of Ports jetty opposite the Jesus Christ Church of Vanxim up to the ferry jetty where the islanders cross over to Divar. The Captain of Ports jetty was where boats once ferried people from Vanxim directly to Panjim. No longer. Divar is where maximium apathy happens. Vanxim falls under the Sao Matias Village Panchayat and its sole panch Manuel Furtado couldn’t care less about the sand extraction and watches blithely as part of Vanxim’s shore gets eroded. Neither does the Sao Matias acting Sarpanch Tulsidas Kundaikar, who has been in office since June 2008. Kundaikar even had the audacity to tell a news channel that he had done all he could, which was shooting off letters to the Mines Department, the Goa Marine Police and Captain of Ports (CoP) and specifically picked on the extremely susceptible Captain A P Mascarenhas,(who retires next month) for his ‘inaction’ blaming the official squarely. But Kundaikar is an old hand at this, for years he blamed Mascarenhas for the government’s dismal record of building ferry boats. Though the illegal sand extraction has been going on for the past three months, Kundaikar didn’t think it was necessary to inform the Cumbarjua MLA Pundurang Madkaikar, till (unconfirmed yet) Sunday April 25 when another concerned villager Edgar D’Mello and Jelton met him protesting his own inaction. Earlier a group of about 15 Vanxim villagers also met him. The marine police did make on a joyride to the site. How else can you describe a boat trip when your cops come in a swift boat and don’t pursue the slow and cumbersome sand boats that promptly scooted off and no arrests made. In the backdrop of the calm river and two beautiful islands, joyride it was. *Inside Job* While it is mostly non-islanders who are robbing the island of its precious eco-protection (some of them are from the neighbouring island of Akhada) what has hurt Vanxim villagers most is that people from the island itself like Tulsidas Parab, Padmanath Bhosle, Ramesh Bhosle, Bhalchandra Bhosle, Amrut Volvoikar, Shivanand Bhosle and Kishore Tari are as high as their knees in the sand extraction racket. Bhalchandra Bhosle and Amrut Volvoikar own two boats each which shows there is money to be banked, and there are an estimated 60-70 boats that work the sand bank there. The manner in which a single boat is loaded easily fills up a large sized truck. Many of these Sand Extractors have provided the migrant workers hired to load the boats with crude shacks to live and no toilets. *Admission of Guilt* This doesn’t happen too often, the government admitting to ailments caused by mining dust, but when it does, you can be sure nothing good ever comes out of it. The Health Minister Vishwajeet Rane admitted that inhalation of inorganic and organic dust leads to various respiratory diseases like anthracosis, silicosis, asbestosis, sclerosis etc., all from ‘heavy mining pollution’ he confessed. Now, we all know how mediocre government medical care is and this does not include some of the talented doctors at the Goa Medical College Hospital for example. But did you know that the mining belt that has made billionaires of a few and thousands of villagers sick by contrast. The list of mine owners under the jurisdiction of the five health centres reads like a Who’s Who of Billionaire Mine Owners (see below) and overwhelms you with a sense of frustration. Because, compare their billions with the miserly facilities available in some of them which are mere sub-centres. *The List* *Sub-Centre Kevona under PHC Quepem:* 1. I am referring to Gabe's comment below. It is very easy to throw stones on others, but we have to remember that a life has been lost, and no one has the right to sit in judgment. And why bring the Church into the mix? There should be absolutely no problem for any church to bury the deceased. Her personal life is something that she as an adult has been responsible for, and the same applies to Micky the Minister. Besides this, casting aspersions on the priest from Colva is just uncalled for. GABE'S COMMENT: Very unfortunate indeed and a sad day for Micky. He should put up his hand and admit his relationship. Under the circumstances which Church will bury her ? Micky will have to get his friend in Colva to do the necessary.

Selma wrote: As for tarvottis and Gulfkars heralding the moral degradation of Goa, what is it these people should have done? Stayed in Goa, spending long hours at the local gaddi, then become sarpanches and bleeding people dry with bribes and black-mail. Tarvottis and Gulfkars are doing honest work onboard the ships and in the Gulf. The sort of work, if those left in Goa ever did, they would die of exhaustion within a week. Soon, they would return to touring the beach shacks on their bikes, looking for White British aunties who will pay for their drinks. Comment: Selma can keep her one-eyed economics lessons to herself. It just reveals the level of ignorance. We have not washed firangi and arab toilets to develop our economic condition. We have stayed put in our land and are proud to have toiled and made a decent living and that too ethically. Our family has also served as Sarpanchas and panchas and we can walk with our head high in our village even to this day, a recognition I doubt Selma will get in her village. We are not exhausted with our work which Selma may never ever dream of experiencing in her life time. What work is more difficult and strenuous than agriculture? Great to know that our white British and U.S. aunties are available to roadside romeos to sponsor their drink. This itself speaks of the level of the foreign culture and values which our Selma bai is trying to preach to us in Goa. In the Margao wholesale market a Goan lady happen to invite me and my wife to buy and split the king fish equally. Vendor had quoted Rs.500 and our asking price was Rs. 400/- Whilst bargaining a young tarvotti with all the gold flashing on his fingers, wrist and neck happen to inquire the price with the vendor who quoted him Rs 600/- Without bargaining this fattened cow happens to pay 600 and walk away with the fish for cleaning. Vendor was overjoyed and gave us a sarcastic look. He happened to get more than what he had quoted us !!!No wonder one finds fish coming to Goa from as far as Andhra Pradesh. Another instance I had bought a small vase from Bombay for Rs. 25 only to find the same type in a shop at Margao. I could not believe my ears when the salesgirl quoted me the price for it as 250 !!! ten times more. I double checked to be told again Rs. 250 /- Many wives of our Non Resident Goans spend lavishily the hard earned wealth of their spouses, without Bargaining, which they feel is below their dignity Its not tarvoteanchim bondolam but, I am above you Goan attitude, bringing in more vendors from outside Goa. [Goanet] The Princess and The Pauper
Dear Sir, The Golden Goa or the Rome of the East as it was known, is lost forever and will never be the same. The ills of corruption are so deep down in our system and is like an epidemic affecting all section of society. Most have of us are shouting from the roof top on environmental issues but nothing has changed and I doubt anything will change if we do not take this corruption as AID's epidemic. Tourism is our lifeline of our economy but see the way we take care of our surroundings. We have not only destroyed and degraded the forest but our beaches too. What are we trying to show case to the tourist? The bleeding hills and eroding beaches? The story of MV River Princess is classic tale of Goa's corporate ethics and State Governance. The famous Princess once donned the palatial corridors of the well know mining house in Goa. The princess started to lose its grandeur and sheen. The wealthy prince did not have money to pay for her upkeep and so he left her at the high seas to find some wealthier than him. Princess waited for 2 years and but no one came to her aid. After all who what an ageing princess? Deadly storm washed her shore and now she though there is glimpse of hope, a hope of her prince charming coming for her rescue. Little did she realised the so called Prince is nothing but a Pauper. Almost 10 years the Princess is stuck at Condolim Beach and no one seems to have any answers, people Condolim, people of Goa, Goa Government, the police and not even the Judiciary. Every passing day changes the topography of the beach. To date, the 240 meter long Princess has eroded 1.2 kms of coastline and more to follow. This has also proved an environmental disaster, affecting the seabed and threatening bathers. The amount of damage the abandoned Princess has wreaked on the Candolim beach is apparent to the naked eye but yet we are blind. Blindfolded with money and power. The inability to remove the grounded vessel has exposed the perils of mining in Goa. It has also exposed the corporate house and the political establishment. How much the corporations care for the social and environmental cause of the land. Money to them is paramount and no regards to environment they operate. In the power of corridors, the princess owners saved for themselves crores of rupees from this accident but the Goan Taxpayers will be fleeced of more than 108 crores on top of eroded coastline. National Institute of Oceanography had done lot of environmental studies on this case but has we the people of Goa learnt anything from this disaster is a million dollar question. Re: [Goanet] Fwd: Todays Herald The Parody of our Melody by PeterFernandes
Very well said, that, Peter, Your concluding words sums it all: Unless, we learn to discern the voice of the “Fine Tuner,” who gives us the great harmony vital for growth of nature and life, our future is bleak, and our end is uncertain. We might have to dance to the “Parody of the Melody,” for the rest of our lives. I would want serious minded Goans to turn to page 3 of the above edition of Herald and try to digest the [red] highlighted news item in the headline caption Uproar marks Sirlim gram sabha - 'Panch accused of demanding haftas' All I say is: If the village which is made up of eminent, not so eminent, famous, respected, and even at times world renowned people as well as the down to earth scratching for their livelihood people including the village idiots and when the time comes to elect their representatives in the village Panchayat elections, the entire village goes ahead and elects the, perhaps the sweet talking , well intentioned, village idiots in these vital grass-roots elections. What can the village expect if not the demands for haftas at every turn?? I have, time and again, stressed the point that for the village Panchayat elections, the entire village must be shaken up by the efforts of those very eminent, not so eminent, famous, respected and even world renowned persons to wake up every voter in the village folks to the reality that the village must work towards electing those people who are morally and ethically sound and who do not depend on 'haftas' for their daily needs of life. The sound reasoning being, since the top bracketed people of the village will not want anything to do with being the representatives of the village themselves by virtue of having better things to do, they must, at least, not leave the entire village to the mercy of the ' hafta claiming mercenaries' who after being elected, sprout wings to fly high in the sky, often to hold hands with the higher ranking idiots that the collective of the people of the state of Goa has seen fit to put in charge of not only their very own lives and destinies, but also the well being of GOA itself. The only solution to this enigma of Panchayat elections, where 99 per cent of the Panchayats are sour on gram sabhas ( in spite of every good intentioned voter, voting), is to collectively work with all the power and the strength of the well meaning society of the village towards the election of a 'panel' based Panchayat body where the entire village campaigns for this 'panel' which in turn will work under the village prepared MANIFESTO, and nothing else. This is in line with the thinking that: The 'Village' is strong if its 'Ward' is strong. The 'Constituency' is strong if the 'Village' is strong. The 'State is strong if the 'Constituency' is strong. And, finally, The 'Nation', the 'Country' is strong if the 'State' is strong. Do we, indeed, see the strength of our State, our Nation, with the 'moral and ethical debris' that we live with in our 'WARDS' ?? Couldn't we collectively work together to change this situation when perhaps more than 90 per cent of the villagers desire good, effective governance??? GOA ! I say to you. Go for the 'Village Panel' system of electing your Panchayat bodies with a matching 'Village Manifesto' , with the determination and vigor to do better, to EXCEL . If that is done, the high ranking idiots in the State's governance will have been automatically weeded out and put to pastures, not altogether green. All that is required, as a basic self-instinct to survive in this political melodrama ( the parody of Melody) is for us individually to firmly say that I STAND FOR POLITICAL SANITY to stand up tall in the crowd to collectively assert that they are 'PPS' -' PEOPLE for POLITICAL SANITY' . It is but natural that when people remain dis-united.. fight battles and wars.. the vultures remain happy and contented. Cheers floriano 9890470896 www.goasu-raj.org It is not ENOUGH that GOOD, HONEST citizens contest elections. It is not ENOUGH that GOOD, HONEST citizen voters elect good, honest representatives. GOA urgently needs 'GOOD, HONEST, DISCIPLINED SYSTEM of GOVERNANCE'. Wherein, even a dishonest person is forced to be good, honest n disciplined, or to QUIT. Only through PPS can such 'good, honest n disciplined system of governance' be identified and accepted. [Goanet] Who the bleep cares about the Raaj!
Hi Mrs. Cardoso, I am an ardent follower of GN. I read most of the stuff, but I wish our Concani writers in Romi which is the best script for our mae bhas should make it short and sweet. Besides in 20 years I am ready for the victory, I am already practising eating paan imported from Taiwan, and wearing a lungi to keep up with the trend for the better days to come. BC Dear Bernardo, First of all thank you for reading my column so faithfully every week :-) Secondly, I never thought I would agree with you but I do. We have traded in one form of colonisation for another. Unfortunately, India had no desire nor the vision to cultivate a fine dominion as Goa when the Portuguese left in 1961. That the Portuguese themselves did not prepare us for democracy is what betrayed us the most in the end. But I am an optimistic. We will survive and we will emerge victorious in another 20 years or so. Best, selma

[Goanet] Blessings from goddess Gajlaxmi bring good rainfall and prosperity
Blessings from goddess Gajlaxmi bring good rainfall and prosperity TNN, May 31, 2010, 08.14am IST KERI: For water and vegetation, which are basic necessities of life, the monsoonal rains are a sine qua non. With life and livelihood of people mainly depending on the monsoons, people invoke gods and goddesses for sufficient rains, especially in the Western Ghats. Gajlaxmi, a goddess having two elephants standing on either sides and pouring water on her head, is the most popular deity worshipped by various communities living in the forested regions of Goa to get sufficient rains. In Sattari, almost all villages have temples of Sateri and Kelbai. Sateri is depicted in the form of Mahishasurmardini whereas Kelbai in the form of Gajlaxmi. Mahishasurmardini holds a trident, a sword, and a shield in three hands and the fourth hand is shown showering blessings. Under her foot she crushes a buffalo demon. Kelbai is a goddess holding lotus buds in two hands and is surrounded by elephants holding pitchers in their trunks and pouring water. According to scholar R C Dhere, the worship of Gajlaxmi was originally associated with the cult of earth-mother goddess. Uncertain monsoon is always a cause of worry for farming communities. By worshipping monsoonal rain symbolically through a Gajlaxmi panel, they believe that they can get good rainfall. Nandkumar Kamat, from the Goa University says, In Goa, it could be a symbolic worship for monsoonal showers. The elephant represents a monsoonal cloud. Through Gajlaxmi worship a link between the sky and the earth is established. The monsoonal rains invigorate the earth. The earth-goddess becomes Shakambari or creator of vegetation. Gajlaxmi in local language is known as Kelbai. As per a cultural historian, the late Anant Dhume 'Kel' word is evolved from the Kannada language meaning tree, whereas the suffix 'bai' is used for a beloved lady. Thus, Gajlaxmi also relates to vegetation. Cudshe village in Sattari has the biggest Gajlaxmi panel whereas Barabhumi near Tambadi Surla has a sacred grove dedicated to Barabhumka, with a temple housing a beautiful panel of Gajlaxmi. Gajlaxmi panels at Caranzol in Sattari and Kazaredhat have unique plaques which reflect socio-cultural history of the area. As the prosperity of a region during the olden days depended on the rains, people used different ways to appease the rain gods and the cult of Gajlaxmi is one among these traditions. People of Sattari and Sanguem talukas, which have a good rainfall, worship Gajlaxmi. Kelbai, Bhavkai are the local names for this folk deity. People strongly believe that blessings of Gajlaxmi are essential for sufficient rainfall and prosperity. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Blessings-from-goddess-Gajlaxmi-bring-good-rainfall-and-prosperity/articleshow/5991915.cms
[Goanet] Ponda Awareness Meeting for FLAT OWNERS on Sunday 6th June.
- Do GOACAN a favour, circulate this email to your family members, relatives, neighbours and friends. Help other CONSUMERS to be better informed. - -- GOACAN to hold meeting for Flat Owners at Ponda -- GOACAN has decided to hold the fourth meeting of Flat Owners at Ponda as part of its ongoing Awareness Campaign on their Consumer Rights. The Awareness Meeting for Flat Owners will be organised by GOACAN on Sunday 6th June at Almeida High School Hall, near old Bus Stand, Ponda from 10am to 1pm. The meeting seeks to provide an opportunity and a platform for Flat owners to narrate their problems, express their opinions on the possible solutions and chart out a course of action for the near future. It may be noted that over the past two years GOACAN has been receiving many complaints directly and through the village based Consumer Forums from Flat Owners with regards to their sale agreements, non-maintenance of the buildings non formation of Housing Societies although payment has been made to the builder, poor service of electricity water supply, no proper parking facilities, conversion sale of open spaces, lack of garbage management sanitation and taxation issues with Municipal Councils Village Panchayats. With the lack of proper legislation, poor monitoring by various Government Agencies, and most importantly lack of awareness of their consumer rights, Flat Owners across the State of Goa have been facing umpteen number of problems that have resulted in unnecessary litigation, large scale expenses, agony and mental tension for families interested in having a decent home and a peaceful life. Many senior citizens have also lost their life savings due to problems related to purchase of flats. GOACAN is convinced that unless Flat owners understand their Rights Responsibilities, stop agonising start organising, identify the various agencies that are part of the problem and involve them in the solution, unite at Building Town level, the problem will continue to persist and reach gigantic proportions. In this context GOACAN has held meetings at Vasco, Margao and Mapusa and proposes to hold a similar awareness meeting in Panjim. GOACAN proposes to facilitate the process for the setting up of a Ponda Taluka Flat Owners Association to protect the interests of the Flat Owners in the Taluka. In this direction it will develop a charter of demands which would include lobbying for legislation with the members of the Goa Legislative Assembly from the constituencies in Ponda as well as guidelines for action by the Ponda Municipal Council (MMC) as a local self governing body before the forthcoming Municipal Council elections. GOACAN calls upon individual Flat owners and prospective Flat Owners, Co-operative Housing Societies, Housing Maintenance Societies, Housing Associations from Ponda and the surrounding areas who would like to attend and actively participate in the Awareness Meeting to write in to GOACAN Post Box 187, Margao Goa 403 601 or email goa...@gmail.com -- GOA CIVIC AND CONSUMER ACTION NETWORK -- promoting civic and consumer rights in Goa -- GOACAN Post Box 187 Margao, Goa 403 601 GOACAN Post Box 78 Mapusa, Goa 403 507 mail: goa...@gmail.com Visit: http://goacan.blogspot.com --

Thanks Selma for Giving Soter a few tips on Economics. Besides these tips, Soter should remember that the Money, which otherwise would not be there, spent by the Tarvotsi and Gulfies, benefitted the Economy of Goa. The Tarvotis and Gulfies built houses employing people from Architects, Carpenters, Stone Masons, Glaziers, and many others. These people in turn spent the money which they got for their services to educate their children, and feed and clothe their families. Economic activity is a chain reaction spurred on by the action of one who first spends the hard earned dollar which produces a multi faceted reaction in a market. Without that dollar earned and spent by the Tarvotis and Gulfies Goa's economy would be in a sad state . Manuel (Eddie) Tavares.

COMMENT: I have never before seen such an ungrateful, ignorant and disgraceful post - as the one above. Is Soter trying to suggest that Goans struggled on board the merchant vessels and in the 130 degree temperatures in the Gulf because they wanted to see Sand and Sea they had never seen before? Does he even know WHY Goan families had to send their young male children (initially) to these hardships? Just to use a post-1961 example: What happened to the cost of living post-1961? What happened to the earning potential of families? Where would the retired, elderly and disabled find the funds to pay for the dramatically increased cost of living? Is Soter suggesting that Goans went to the Gulf to wash Arab toilets? Really? And if they did (and got enough funds to support their families), is there any shame in work? Personal experiences apart, Is Soter also suggesting that Goa Panchayats are a hallowed set of organisations? Really? Shutes, you could have fooled me. It must be those Gulfies or those Tarvottis (both in absentia) who gave permissions for all those illegal constructions all over Goa. It could not be those (Honesht) Panchas and Sarpanchas who bring ad nauseam forth No Confidence motions because they are fighting to SERVE the populace. Yes Sir And (as Manuel Tavares has already noted), without the Gulfie and Tarvotti funds ..Goa would have survived. Right? But of course . Morjim has Panchayat and possibly, NO Tarvotti and Gulfie funds. It is doing very well indeed. It is even flying its own set of flags. Bravo Soter, Bravo! Yes, it is the fault of the Gulfies and the Tarvottis because they sacrificed and saved funds in Indian banks . They should (instead) have invested those funds in the Panchayats! ha!! jc

If Soter is right, then we Goans are really Ignorant passive ' Shinkon Brutt' (pardon my Kokni) and do deserve the type of Government that we have. I was in Kenya for many years and even the illiterate among the Africans knew that their vote counted. They had a common saying in Kiswahili 'Kula hapa na Kura huko' Literal translation ' Eat whatever your given here but vote there' in other words, consume the Feni and Chicken that Churchill is offering but vote for change. A change that will usher in a new responsive and representative Government more receptive to the needs and aspirations of Goa and Goans. Wake up you Goans and smell the Feni. It surely stinks if it comes from one of the current Politicians.Let us vote in a new era in the history of this tiny place we call Goa which has produced from its Children from Nuclear Scientists, Doctors, Engineers, Professors, Teachers, Tailors, Mechanics, Musicians, Football players etc etc etc. Now can we not produce a Government which is truly Of The People By the People and for the People ? THIS IS MY CHALLENGE TO YOU AND I HOPE YOU TAKE IT SERIOUSLY. Manuel (Eddie) Tavares.

[Goanet] Final assault on the last surviving green belt and wildlife habitat-Kalapur bandh-Nagali hill-the grand megaproject plan exposed
I have observed that everywhere people are hurrying to destroy green belts and fields as if they know that after notification of RP-2021, they would get all these crimes condoned….that explains filling up of vast Khazan fields at Merces and at many other places There is a grand plan to destroy the green belt of Kalapur bandh and convert the green watershed with many habitats of mammals, reptiles, birds and thousands of wild trees teeming with wildlife for new megaprojects. The area is between102 years old Bondval lake of Calapur communidade and the Model status matchbox buildings megaproject at Nagali, Taleigao. (see the indexed images in my picasa web album) Bambolim plateau is a microlithic (5000 years old) archaeological site. For thousands of years there existed an ancient trail, a foot track from Calapur bandh to Bambolim plateau. There were some rock cut steps too..all this is destroyed within a few days… A road is being constructed on very steep slope in clandestine manner behind Boys’ hostel, Goa University (check the image of a banyan tree and a cross) to link with existing road which connects St cruz to Taleigao. I spotted this activity yesterday evening and reported it to the VC at night. It would be reported to concerned authorities and the media once offices open. I don’t know whether flying squad has any wings and energy to fly. The toll so far:- At least 2-300 wild trees, loss of precious habitatsand artificial break in vegetation, massive soil erosion et al Need concrete evidence of the ecovandalism-just 5 kms away from the seat of power? [Goanet] Blessings from goddess Gajlaxmi bring good rainfall and prosperity
The elephant is a vahan of Indra. This elephant is Airavata, and celestial elephants trace their lineage to Airavata. In the past, Samvartaka and the thunderheads were summoned by Indra to lash at Vrindavana, when Krishna exhorted the Gopas that they should be worshipping Mount Govardhana instead of Indra. Samvartaka is the host of the thunderclouds/ the thunderheads. The thunderheads are a heavy bunch, like storm troopers if you will. Indra is like the chief of Field Marshall. Samvartaka is the General or at least commands the Cloud Division.. Indra's roar is Bhoh! Bhoh! Govardhana!! Hem kitem?! High above them (the cowherd village), suspended between heaven and earth, Krishna holds aloft the mountain in his hand. He holds Govardhana inverted abouve Vrindhavana---a living awning of earth, rock and forest. (Blocking the rains) [from, Krishna, life and song of the blue god, by Ramesh Menon, Rupa Co]. Basically Krishna, stopped Indra and his fury. Indra unmoved, later says, This cowherd is the Brahman!
