[Goanet] FW: Quickest cure for Diarrhoea.

2010-09-06 Thread Camillo Fernandes

When someone gets diarrhoea, sometimes the solution is so easy, we wonder why
anyone has to suffer.
Of all the ingredients here, the most potent is Rice, but not in the usual form
we eat it in, and neither would rice porridge work too well.
The secret is in rice water.
When Dr Albert Winsemius came to Singapore for a farewell and thank you dinner
in his honour, he brought along his wife Aly and his granddaughter, Jolijn.
Both women came down with very bad gastroenteritis. They saw the doctor who
gave them medication. It was slow to work.
Mother boiled some rice in lots of water and went to their hotel with two 1.5L
bottles of rice water. I cringed in shame at the offer of this folk remedy,
which seemed so primitive to me. Never heard of this cure before. To my
surprise, it worked, and they were even able to go out for dinner the next day.
Both were exclaiming how the rice water did the trick of making them well
again. Well, lucky it worked, I thought to myself.
Many months later, I regretted laughing at it. Dr Christina Shanta Emmanuel,
who is the CEO of...uh, which group I have forgotten, either National Health
Group, or Polyclinics, or whatever.. regarded me seriously when I brought up
the topic like it was good fun. She said that Prof Wong Hock Boon had
presented a paper on it at some conference after he had done clinical trials.
Then his results were published in the Lancet, the Medical Journal all doctors
read. In fact, said Shanta, he was credited for saving the lives of 2 million
African babies by this method.
It is rice water and not rice, that does the trick. I have found it effective
again and again.
THE EXACT RECIPE
You take a handful of rice and boil it in a large saucepan with lots of water.
Like three or four large glasses.
Then you cool that and drink the water. If you are in a hurry to relieve the
ailing person, take the saucepan off the fire and dunk it in a frying pan or
basin of cool water with ice cubes if necessary. This gives the patient a
chance to drink the rice water sooner and cure himself or herself sooner.
When drinking the rice water, make sure there is lots of it. You have to tell
the patient that enough water must go in to line your guts from throat to other
end, all 10 to 12 metres of it.
If you take rice, it stays in the stomach. If you take broth, some of it may go
into the small intestine. But if you take rice water, it will carry rice grains
to every inch of your small and large intestine to the end where the problem
is..
How does it work? Even Prof Wong Hock Boon doesn't know. Read the article by
going to this site:
http://r ehydrate.org/dd/dd06.htm#page2
It is good to pass on the news to everyone you know because the complaint is so
common and people suffer unnecessarily. You would be doing your friends a great
favour to relieve them of their misery when the occasion arises.

On 30 August 2010 21:52, George Pinto georgejpi...@yahoo.com wrote:

It has never been easy publishing books and reaching a wide audience in the
Goan diaspora, now made even challenging with the web (although it does help
spread word about the books). As Silviano Barbosa famously remarked a few
years ago, he could have made more money selling sausages wrapped in pages
of his THE SIXTH NIGHT than actually selling THE SIXTH NIGHT.

I hope Goans continue to support our authors.

George, I think it has become *easier* with the web. Far easier. Simply
because it is now much simpler to get the attention of people sitting a long
distance away, who would have otherwise never known of a book that could be
of interest to them.

In the case of our common friend Silviano Barbosa, among other factors, I
think it is a case simply of: fiction is far harder to market anyway!

More than the question of support to Goa's authors, it would be great if
we just gave them a fair chance. Goa being a small market, there are some
additional challenges.

One of the big concerns is that Goa-related books often just get ignored. As
a starting point, I feel it would help immensely if we had more people
interested in reviewing Goa-related books, at the right time, i.e. soon
after they're published. That way, at least the potential buyers would know
what topics are being written about and focussed on.

Decisions to buy, or not to buy, are of course to be made on merits. FN

From: Tony Luis

All the above are carried out by so called Catholics who happen to be
Catholics because through no fault of their own they were led to the
 baptismal font by their parents!!

RESPONSE: Why could you not name any of the Catholics you refer to above???

Having said that the mess is not just caused by so called Catholics..
What about the Ranes, Pratap Singh and Vishwajeet who own large chunks
of land and are part of the bribery and corruption bandwagon.

What about Babu Kavlekar the MLA of Quepem and Chairman of the GIDC
responsible for the Food Park Scam in Quitol?
What about Ravi Naik and the Drugs Nexus?
What about Digambar Kamat who will turn black into white or deny the
truth and justice just to hang on to his CM chair to make his Crore a
day in corrupt ill gotten gains

RESPONSE: Rajan Parrikar has posted photographs on Goanet of BK on the
land designated for the Food Park. But do only the Ranes own large
chunks of land?? Are these the only names you can think of connected
with the word 'Scam'?? Why this hang-up on one community?? Is the other
community a Flock of Angels??

One can understand the resentment many of us feel towards what is going
on in Goa. You are not alone. However when one starts to build a list of
names for the Honor Roll, it is better to make a complete list or no
list at all. There are many clammering to be on the Honor Roll.

[Goanet] TEACHER – monday muse (6Sept ’10)

2010-09-06 Thread Pravin Sabnis

MONDAY MUSE (06 September 2010)

TEACHER

‘Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel’- Socrates

Our personalities are moulded by the valuable lessons that we learn from our
many teachers. They include our parents, formal teachers at school, skill
teachers who teach us music, sports, as well as peers and even our own
students. But the roles of parenting, teaching and mentoring generally come
into two types.

It is pertinent to note that many see the role has one that moulds the
personality, akin to a potter shaping a lump of clay. However, each child has
infinite potential and is a future tree waiting to grow and bloom. Hence
effective teachers are the ones who choose to be gardeners to the seed of
potential that lies in the learner.

There is an old Chinese saying that underlines the implications of wrong
approaches to teaching: ‘give a seed to a potter and you shall have a bonsai’.
While the potter breathes life into dead clay, the gardener has to take care
about not stifling the very life of the learner. The gardener’s approach can
really shape a personality and script a destiny. And a potter’s path can result
in tragedy or cause a mutiny.

However, the role of a gardener is not as easy as it looks. It requires us to
be better at tolerance, facilitation, allowing space and empowering the
learner’s right to make a choice. William Arthur Ward said it so well: that ‘a
mediocre teacher tells, a good teacher explains, a superior teacher
demonstrates and a great teacher inspires!’

Let’s BE BETTER at the noble task of teaching
The learner-seed is nurtured with gardening!

[Goanet] Mormugao Badminton Ranking - Double Crowns for Anushka, Floyd. Maiden titles for Pratith, Emilia

2010-09-06 Thread Sandeep Heble
Floyd Araujo and Anushka Kuvelkar, as expected, claimed double crowns
each at the All Goa Major Ranking Badminton Tournament organized by
Mormugao Badminton Club. At the Finals held at Deepvihar High School
Indoor Badminton Courts, Headland Sada on Sunday, the top seeds won
their Singles and doubles matches to emerge Champions in their
respective categories.

Top seed Anushka Kuvelkar was firmly in control of her match against
Malati Dani as she smashed her way to an emphatic 21-10, 21-11 win in
the Girls Under 19 Singles. In the Girls Under 16 Doubles, Anushka and
Pranjal Chimulkar had it easy as they cruised past Malati Dani and
Riya Kossambe with a comfortable 21-8, 21-8 win.

Floyd however survived a scare in the Mens Singles as he lost the
first set 17-21 to his second seeded opponent Sunny Sawant. But Sunny
completely ran out of steam thereafter, losing the next two sets 6-21,
12-21 to give the top seed his third straight championship victory
this season.

In the Mens doubles, Parag Chauhan and Darwin Barretto, who had played
brilliantly to knock out the last Tourney winners Sunny Sawant and
Sharmad Mahajan in the semis, could not raise their game to the same
standards as they lost to Floyd Araujo and Navneet Nasnodkar with a
21-16, 21-16 score line.

In the Boys Under 16 Singles, Pratith Naik, who had stunned top seed
Rahul Chandrashekar in the semis, continued his giant-killing ways
when he beat second seed Chinmay Kamat 21-12, 19-21, 21-17 in three
tight sets to clinch his maiden crown in this category. Pratith, who
was also in line for a double, however lost 15-21, 15-21 to Sharmad
Mahajan in the Boys Under 19 category as the top seed went on to
clinch his fifth straight title this season.

In the Boys Under 13 category, Dhruv Angle had to dig deep into his
reserves before beating the tenacious Tejan Fallary 21-13, 16-21,
21-18. In the Girls Under 13, Emilia Silveira won her maiden title as
she beat Tanvi Desai 21-11, 21- 15.

Meanwhile, Cancio Mascarenas put up a gallant fight in the Veterans 45
plus category, but Rupchandra Humraskar’s superior fitness saw him
though to his fourth straight Singles crown as he won the epic battle
20-22, 21-17, 21-9. In the Veterans 45 plus doubles, top seeds Tanaji
Sawant and P.K. Gupta committed too many errors to surrender the title
rather tamely with a 23-21, 21-15 score line to the formidable pairing
of Narahar Thakur and Anil Paigankar.

Shri P.C. Parida( Dy. Chairman, Mormugao Port Trust) was the Chief
Guest and distributed the prizes in the presence of Guest of Honour
Shri T. Kesavan( Director, Agencia Commercial Maritima Ex-Trustee,

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 24th Sunday of the Year

2010-09-06 Thread Jude Botelho
5-Sep-2010

Dear Friend,

All of us have had the experience of losing things and finding them. Some of us
may have the experience of losing someone and then finding that person again.
There may even be some of us who have had the experience of being lost and then
finding our way. Each of these experiences is painful and also joyful, but the
joy of finding and being found far outweighs the pain of loss.  Today we are
reminded that God is our final destination and we are always welcome home!
Enjoy
the homecoming! Fr. Jude

Sunday Reflections: Twenty-Fourth Sunday ‘Lost and Found! Rejoice!’
12-Sep-2010

Exodus 32: 7-14;                    1 Timothy1: 12-17;                    Luke
15: 1-32;

Today’s first reading from the Book of Exodus tells us how the chosen people
rebelled against God in spite of all that He had done for them as they
journeyed
to the Promised Land and while Moses went up the mountain to meet God, the
people made a golden calf and worshipped it as their God. God decided to punish
the people and destroy them because of their infidelity. But Moses intervened
and interceded with God on behalf of his people and God listened to his prayer
and was ready to forgive. We need intercessors and Jesus is our best mediator.
We too need to intercede with God on behalf of others.

Pray to Forgive and be Forgiven
Consider the honest testimony of a woman damaged by one of the most
psychologically ruinous experiences possible to women. Her husband left her.
She
said, “After that I was angry, bitter, and filled with resentment and hatred
for
my ex-husband. I went through questions like, ‘What have I done?’ and could
come
up with nothing. I had always tried to please him. So I asked, ‘Lord, how could
you let this happen to me?’ I cried, I sobbed, I moaned, and I wailed. I beat
my
breast and asked for forgiveness for the spiteful feelings I had toward my
ex-husband, and for the anger. Then, one sleepless night, I prayed aloud,
‘Father, forgive me, I want to trust and have faith like a child, but right now
I don’t. Please help me really mean that I want to truly wish my husband all
the
best that life has to offer. You know I don’t mean this now, but I want to.’”
Harold Buetow in ‘God Still Speaks: Listen!’

In today’s gospel we see Jesus surrounded by sinners and tax collectors, who
gather around him to hear his word. The Pharisees cannot accept this and
condemn
Jesus because he lets these sinners keep his company. Jesus knows what they are
thinking and in response tells them three parables. In all three we see the
role
of a mediator highlighted in different ways. In the first parable we have the
shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine sheep and goes after the lost one. In real
life it could be doubtful whether the shepherd would leave the ninety-nine and
go after the lost one, which may not be found. But God is a different kind of
shepherd who loves and cares for the lost and is able to risk everything for
the
lost one.  The second parable is one where the main character is a woman who
has
lost a coin. She had ten coins out of which one is lost. She could have said,
“Why bother? I have nine with me and that’s good enough.” But the woman
searches
meticulously every nook and corner, again and again, unmindful of the lateness
of the hour or fatigue caused, not giving up till she has found the coin she
lost. In both cases the joy is not only personal but social as well: The
shepherd and the woman call upon the neighbours and friends to celebrate the
joy
of finding the lost one. Every one needs to rejoice, because every single lost
individual is important to the owner and to the community. Only when every one
has a place and there is a place for every one, is life, and the community,
complete. The third parable is the familiar story of the prodigal father, who
cannot rest while his son is lost. He loves both his sons, the one who stays at
home and is hard-working and faithful, as well as the one who goes away,
abandoning his responsibilities and his family. He takes his inheritance and
spends it all till he has nothing left. Then he decides to come home because he
has nowhere to go. One would think he deserves to be taught a lesson, to be
punished, to be made to realize his folly. On the other hand, according to our
logic, the elder son, who stayed at home, worked doing double-duty, needs to be
rewarded. But the father acts so differently. He does not stand on dignity and
insist on his rights, he does not think of himself but of his lost son. He
waits
for him to come home. When the son finally returns more out of hunger than out
of love for his father, the father is overjoyed; he runs out to welcome him,
embraces his long-lost son and organizes a party in his honour. There is no
warning or conditions laid out for his return to the family. There is no
reminder of his folly. When the elder son refuses to join the party, the father
mediates on

Re: [Goanet] The pao and the glory - Meaning of NRI Who is a Goan.

2010-09-06 Thread From PAES
A Goan is someone born in Goa or is of Goan parentage.
He/she may be living in and holding a passport of another country, but still
that
person is Goan, of Goan nationality.

Note:
1) If born in Goa, or if parents were born in Goa under the Portuguese rule,
their Nationality is Portuguese, even if they later, by freak of history,
obtained an Indian
passport which is only a travel document given on the basis of Citizenship.
(That is the reason why Portugal still issues an ID, besides a passport, if

Dear Good People - Goans,

Many people term overseas Goans as NRI and sometimes NGO.  I am unsure if
there is another nomenclature for Goans.

1.    To me, the definition of Non Resident Indians are those that live
and work overseas on an Indian passport and are intending to come back to
Goa or detour elsewhere depending on the meaning of greener pastures,

whatever that means to each individual's understanding.

2.    What terminology is used for Goans living and working overseas with
foreign passports and an OCI or PIO and those without these documents. We
need to remember here that no: 1 2 have the best of both worlds

      to give back to Goa.

3.    Finally, it takes me to another question that pops up now and then -
recently someone again asked on this forum Who is a Goan - is it one who
has a ration card, ancestral property and if not what else is

required to fit the definition.

I have addressed this to a broad spectrum of people who read Goanet.  My
definition some years ago was truncated by a learned person and a business
man in Panjim Goa where I had attended an annual Goan meet.

Thank you for your time.

The opinion of a Goa based manufacturer, in a message to a friend.    eric.

Yes we do have an issue with tar balls and some oil spill affecting some of the
beaches in S. Goa, but by no stretch of imagination is it a part of a terrorist
plot. At the rate London has had blasts in the past, I would recon it would be
more dangerous than Goa !  As you are well aware terrorists strike not only to
damage but to capture the headlines.  We hear such alerts every year during the
year end and New Year’s festivities. The beaches in N. Goa have not been
affected so you would certainly enjoy your stay next week.

As regards sea food, we locals are eating and thriving on it. I see no problem
with eating either the rawa fried prawns or “sheeth khodi”.  In any event, I
would never eat raw oysters etc in India .

Dear Frederick,
When I joined St. Xavier's College in Bombay in 1941, I found a bright

there that included John Correia Afonso and others with whom I shared a common
interest in literature and writing. Several of us got together and founded the
ChesterBelloc club, named after G. K. Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc, the two
leading Catholic writers and luminaries of the time. We met regularly in a
small
room, and Fr. Esteller, who succeeded Fr. Fell as editor of the College
Magazine, became our mentor. A couple of years later Fr. Eddie D'Cruz took over
the mentoring. He came into one session beaming with pleasure and said, All of
you think you are good writers and you are, but Violet Dias is going to join
the
college next month and then you will see.
Looking back sixty years, I think Violet joined St. Xavier's in the Inter
Arts when I had already moved into the Junior B. A., and Fr. Eddie was
right---she did write well. She was also intelligent as well as pretty, and
after graduation she and her older sister settled in Bombay. But I was not
aware
that she was going anywhere with her writing until a few years ago, in the
United States, Peter Nazareth spoke glowingly to me about her novel, Pears from
the Willow Tree. When I read the novel I found it to be preachy and amateurish,
but Peter has been steadfast in championing it and promoting it at every
available opportunity. Peter is a widely read man and a professor at Iowa
University, so I must respect his opinion and urge others to read her novel
with
an open mind

Re: [Goanet] Understanding arguments

2010-09-06 Thread Ivo

From: Gilbert Lawrence gilbert2...@yahoo.com
Today, I attended a Parsi prayer-service for a local Parsi psychiatrist.
He was

recently diagnosed and is being treated for Acute Leukemia.
I had a chance, during lunch to talk with the officiating Parsi priest about
Zoroastrianism and his (modern) views about the existence of God and
life-after-death - a.k.a the soul. The individual is a part-time priest and
a

full-time environmental engineer in New Jersey.
The Parsi priest gave me an interesting perspective. According to him, to
understand the issue of life-after-death and existence of a God, one needs
to
understand the language of religion and look at concepts in that context.
He
continued, as an analogy to understand complex physics, one needs to
understand

the language of mathematics.
The never-ending discussion we see on goanet (and elsewhere) may be often
linked
to this analogy that this Parsi priest has given. While we all write in
English

on goanet, we have a difficult time to read, understand and digest what is
written; because the two individuals may not know the language of the
subject;

of which one is / has likely become an overnight expert.
**Dear Dr.Gilbert, You have understood well the problem of language.
It is not easy to speak in a language that one has never learnt. We take
years to learn that language.
The other person may not be in the same wavelength. Discussion will be
useless, it will be verborrhoea...

I also found it interesting that the prayer-service was for / by a
psychiatrist.

This branch of medicine comes closest to scientifically understand the
perceptions of / by the mind. Neurology understands the organic working of
the

brain and nervous system, while psychiatry deals with neuro-cognition and
cognitive-dissonance disorders of perceptions etc. Of course the two are
overlapping fields.
**You are also right on this score. Understanding the neural basis of
thoughts is not enough.
There is a lot of interpretation and vision that depends on the worldview
and psychological and metaphysical assumptions.

Epistemology and hermeneutics come to our rescue.
We speak today of inter-disciplinary approach.

Keeping the faith: how bleak is the future for Catholicism?

On the eve of the Pope's visit to the UK, it seems that many believe that he

[image: VATICAN-POPE-AFRICA-ANGOLA] Pope Benedict XVI arriving for Sunday
mass at the Cimangola esplanade in Luanda in March last year. Photograph:
Christophe Simon/AFP

Dorcas Gichane moved swiftly through the midday bustle of central Nairobi.
High above her, a billboard advertising whisky suggested Keep Walking. But
Gichane, like hundreds of other devout Kenyans on their lunch breaks, had
reached her destination – the Roman Catholic basilica of the Holy Family.

With a few minutes to spare before mass, some worshippers browsed in the
bookshop. Others said a quick prayer in the stained-glass-and-brick
adoration room where the notice board featured a poster depicting Jesus
and his disciples – all of them black.

After sending a quick text message to a friend, Gichane, a well-dressed
insurance broker, vanished inside the cavernous concrete cathedral, which
was designated a basilica in 1982. Several large, flat-screen televisions
hung from the pillars. A set of hand drums stood against the wall.

Like one in four Kenyans, Gichane is a Roman Catholic. She attends the
45-minute lunchtime mass each weekday, and goes to one of the five Kiswahili
and English services every Sunday morning. Many Kenyans went to Catholic
schools, so the faith begins there, she says. And a lot of hospitals are
backed by the church.

The archbishop of Nairobi, Cardinal John Njue, offers a more spiritual
explanation: One scholar [Kenyan-born John S Mbiti, the author of a seminal
work, African Religions and Philosophy] said that Africans are 'notoriously
religious'. And that's true. It's very deep. It's not something that came
from outside. It's natural. The missionaries did not bring us God, but a new
relationship with God.

In Africa, the idea of
Catholicismhttp://www.guardian.co.uk/world/catholicismthat seems to
prevail in Western Europe – that of a reactionary, declining
religion – seems incomprehensible. The church is liberal, Gichane
protests. It has rules and regulations that are always there. But it does
not place restrictions on people.

In Nigeria, Archbishop Matthew Ndagosa of Kaduna, looks out on a horizon
that would dazzle his Western counterparts. The churches are full. Young
people go to church. And we have the world's largest seminary, in Enugu, he
says, adding that the doctrines that cause Catholicism problems in the rich
world strengthen its appeal in countries like Nigeria. In our tradition,
morals are very strong. The strong rulings – on abortion, condoms,
homosexuality, etcetera – in the Catholic church are a natural match.

Africa's experience highlights several points that are at risk of being
obscured in the controversy surrounding Pope Benedict's visit to an
increasingly secular Britain. One is that, while Western Europeans may be
abandoning religion, the rest of the globe is not. Muslims are not exactly
turning away from Allah. The United States remains deeply religious.
Millions of people in formerly communist Eastern Europe have re-embraced
Orthodox Christianity. And in many parts of Asia, an emergent middle class
is finding in organised religion a spiritual counterweight for its new-found
wealth (and perhaps too a badge of social respectability).

According to the World Christian Database, the proportion of the planet's
population professing one or other of its four biggest faiths (Christianity,
Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism) rose steeply in the mid-1970s and has been
climbing rapidly ever since. By 2005, the figure was 73%.

Strong in the developing world where birth rates are high, Catholicism has
done well out of the contemporary faith boom. Whatever problems Benedict
may have, numbers are not yet among them. His church's statisticians
estimate that the number of baptised Catholics reached 1,166 million at the
end of 2008, a rise of 1.7% on a year earlier. Over the intervening 12
months, the Catholic population as a share of the global total edge up too.

The once-a-Catholic-always-a-Catholic method used for the Vatican's count is
debatable: it takes no account of those who lapse. But even by a more
rigorous measure of belief and conviction, Benedict's religion is growing.
The number of Catholic priests continues to rise, and in 2008 it reached
almost 410,000. But while the number of aspirants to the priesthood grew
that year in Africa, Asia and Oceania (and remained broadly stable in the
Americas), it shrank – and at a striking rate of more than 4% – in Europe.

That points to Catholicism's outstanding challenge – the secularisation of
its traditional heartland. This was the issue that weighed most heavily on
the

[Goanet] Inquisition in Europe - Part 2

2010-09-06 Thread Gilbert Lawrence
Renaissance Period or Pre-Reformation, Counter-Reformation and Inquisition
Period

Some readers of this thread may be authorities in this field; while most
goanetters could have cared less about European history - until now.  Hence it
is important to know and appreciate some basic facts; which knowledgeable
persons may find redundant.  My apologies.

As mentioned in the prior post, the period of the Reformation-Counter
Reformation and Inquisition (Early Modern History 1500 AD-1800 AD) was
immediately preceded by the period of the Renaissance (1300 AD - 1500 AD);
which
is part of the Middle-Ages. While to historians these are two separate periods,
in the life of the people of the time (including start of Portuguese
colonization, Ignatius of Loyola and Francis Xavier) there was a continuum from
one period to the next. While the change in historical periods caused
significant shifts in philosophy, theology, economics and social structure,
which were starting to take roots in some sections of society, these changes
only spread to the majority populace decades later and in some cases not at all.

Paraphrased from Western Civilizations a 1000-page textbook on European
all-encompassing history.

In a number of ways the Renaissance and Reformation were closely related. Both
were products of the powerful current individualism, which gained momentum in
the 14th and 15th centuries. Each had a similar background of economic causes
in
the growth of trade and in the rise of an urban society. Both partook of the
character of a return to original sources: in the one case, to the literary and
artistic achievements of the Greeks and Romans; in the other, to the scriptures
and the doctrines of the Church fathers.

But in spite of these important similarities, it is misleading to think of the
Reformation as merely the religious aspect of the Renaissance.  The guiding
principles of the two movements had comparatively little in common.  The
essence
of the Renaissance was devotion to the human and the natural; with religion
related to a relatively subordinate place. The spirit of the (Protestant)
Reformation was characterized by other worldliness and contempt of the things
of
this life as inferior to the spiritual.

In the mind of the Renaissance humanist, man's nature was generally considered
good. In the view of the Reformers, it was unspeakably corrupt and depraved.
Renaissance leaders believed in urbanity and tolerance. The followers of Luther
and Calvin emphasized faith and conformity. While both the Renaissance and
Reformation aimed at a recovery of the past, they were really oriented in
different directions.

The past the Renaissance humanist strove to revive was Greek and Roman
antiquity, though a few were concerned with the original gospels as sources of
an unspoiled religion.  The (Protestant) Reformers, by contrast, were
interested
chiefly in a return to the teachings of St. Paul and St. Augustin.

It goes without saying that the Renaissance, being an aristocratic movement,
had
less influence on the common man than did the Reformation.

To be continued
Regards, GL

Agnelo Pinheiro,

After writing so well below, it would be a tragedy for you to think of not
writing anymore. All views should be very welcome. And I see in Oscar's
and your posts some movement ahead and in the right direction.
Most of what you wrote I do believe is factual and based on sound
observation .

I agree that Congress and its band of prop-ups from NCP and independents
with fat portfolios are and have been a disaster for Goa. Manohar Parrikar
arguably was better than these thugs!!!
However my only question is the inclusion of Catholics. Being a Catholic
by name but not in Practice is no Catholic and therefore to include and
label these thugs as Catholics is giving them an accolade they do not
deserve at all. I am reminded that these thugs are like the Scribes and
Pharisees that Jesus himself said ''Woe to you Scribes and Pharisees for
being hypocrites who stand on the high altar and on street corners
claiming to preach the faith but do not practice the truth or the faith
themselves.

I stress that this is my observation and not a condemnation !!!
Well done Agnelo !!

I still say Manmohan Singh as the Premier of India - OK for delegation to
meet, signature campaign etc.
Never SONIA GANDHI since she is irrelevant as the head of the CORRUPT
CONGRESS. I am against falling at the feet of this imported Indian.

My grand OK for the 100 or 1000 K rally from dusk to dawn Come Dec. 19 2010.
Cap, T-shirts with PPS insignia will send shivers down the

And this is the need of the hour if any politics or politician has to

My offer of 10K in 'KIND' for PPS is valid and getting stronger.

Dear Oscar and All Goans,

This is the last time I will respond on this thread unless I see a good
reason to write anything further. Before I go to core issue of this
debate, let me unfold few facts about me as they hold relevance to this
thread/debate. I had been the Congress Party active primary member for
14 years. As Congress worker, voted for Congress Party except 2007. I am
a Catholic, not just by words by hard core practicing till date and
intend to stay that way till the end in spite of all that afflicting the
Catholic Church.

Now, with regard to meeting Sonia Gandhi or Manmohan Singh with
delegation is debatable. Yes, it might work if the approach is Carrot
and Stick. Stick to my mind will hit hard if we succeed to show our
strength on the street with International Indian media coverage. For
this reason I support Carmen Miranda’s suggestion of Cap T-shirts.
But, the people who are cause of these ills have to be the part of the
solution.

My suggestion, as we Goans love to sing and dance for every occasion,
let do it that way. Call for a non-political rally represented by all
activists who fight lone tireless battles in small groups under one
banner with the slogan ‘NO TO CORRUPTION YES TO GOOD GOVERNANCE’ on
19th Dec 2010. This event could be something like dawn to dask or vice
versa with participation from singers, dancers, tiatrs etc all pledging
to say NO TO CORRUPTION. Concurrently run a signature campaign at the
venue and then submit it to Sonia Gandhi or Manmohan Singh with delegation.

Viva Goa by heart and soul.

Hi Bosco,

It was because of the context in which I was responding.
Agnelo's mail was about saying that some of the Catholics and Congress  was
responsible for the mess in Goa.
My response was two fold:
To say that these Catholics were Catholic but only in name
But more importantly to demonstrate that the mess has also been caused by so
called non-Catholics and named some to demonstrate the point.
Thats why ! The intent was not because of a hang-up on either community.
My thread is and has always been that the mess is endemic and goes across
communities and peoples. Faith has little or nothing to do here as people
that behave in this despicable manner do not practice their true faith and
really have no in anything except the Greed and the work of the Devil !!!  or
that Power corrupts absolutely..

Thank you for sharing your views on this thread over the past few days. A
couple of queries.

-Original Message-
From: Tony Luis

RESPONSE: Rajan Parrikar has posted photographs on Goanet of BK on the land
designated for the Food Park. But do only the Ranes own large chunks of land??
Are these the only names you can think of connected with the word 'Scam'?? Why
this hang-up on one community?? Is the other community a Flock of Angels??

One can understand the resentment many of us feel towards what is going on in
Goa. You are not alone. However when one starts to build a list of names for
the Honor Roll, it is better to make a complete list or no list at all. There
are many clammering to be on the Honor Roll.

Yes Ladies and Gentlemen,

You do get some telling or thought provoking letters from some
sections of the oHeraldo readership to the Editor. I wonder what we
should make of such letters, do we agree with the letter-writers and
concede that these guys are writing some sense or just castigating US
Goans for working abroad to earn OUR daily bread/livelihood. In fact, if
you take the Amchea Bapa, it is OUR constant reminder that we ask our
Father in heaven, Amcho Dispotto giras aiz amkam di, So, do letters
like this hit the nail on our Goan Nulls or should we conveniently
ignore such letters as the usual crab infested mentality akin to
jealousy emanating from our Brethren in Goa ?
One of the Main Problems why Goans Agree to Dis -agree with one another
and that's why we are in such a Mess, We simply CANNOT OR Do Not

This is a reply to all ‘Goans’ from abroad who write in the papers with
great words of advice. While it is wonderful to see that are interested
in your motherland and deplore today’s politicians who are feeding Goa
to the dogs, it is absurd that you sit at your computers to write
letters from thousands of miles away and take no action.
Please quit your lucrative jobs abroad, come here and join the fight.
You have absolutely no idea how hard it is to fight these rogues, who
have tons of money power.
The village groups of Goa are fighting tooth and nail for the people.
They have achieved a lot so far, and are the real heroes. But this
wasn’t accomplished overnight, and certainly not by writing letters in
the papers.
I am not saying that choosing a lucrative career in another country is a
sin. But if it is your choice to tuck your tail between your legs and
run, please do not advise us. We have good leaders. What we need is
support with action. Barking dogs seldom bite.

Why not work abroad?
Jerome Goes, London
Diogo Furtado (‘Wisdom from afar’, Herald, 2 Sept) does not know that
Goans who have worked abroad have contributed to the welfare of their
families in Goa, many from poverty to a respectable life. Can any Goan
have a decent life with the payment they receive from private firms in
Goa that pay paltry amounts?
A government job cost lakhs of rupees. How many can pay to get these
jobs? Ask any contractor how much money has he to part with to bag a
tender, and how much bribes he has to pay to obtain his final payment.
If he is a true Goan, let him ask the Alemao brothers how they have
amassed so much wealth.

(Please see -

You will notice that the following public IP address of mine is embedded in all

Let me remind you that this public IP address was a unique identifier of my

The excerpts of IP headers below, in addition to proving that Mervyn won the

Goanet masks IP addresses, whereas private emails and cc’s reveal them.

Very much WRONG there.

For one - 'There is no 'good' and 'bad' persons when it comes to POLITICS.
There are only 'good' and 'bad' intensions.'

Two: Good or bad persons elected makes no difference or has nil relevance.
The difference and relevance comes into play when one elects 'good'
or 'bad' SYSTEM OF GOVERNANCE.

For years now we have proved that we are not even capable of chosing a

There are no short cuts. The goans in Goa have to take responsibility to
elect persons of good character and integrity.

While it is good to be idealistic, we also need to be practical.

[Goanet] Attacks on Christians in Karnataks

2010-09-06 Thread anil desai

I did notice the unusual number Rs 50 crores per day but discounted it as a
typographical error. However,we must not lose sight of the larger picture,
which is the sustained attacks on Christians in Karnataka as the latest
Independence day speech by BJP MLA Pralhad Remani at Khanapur shows the kind
of mindset we are dealing with. Please read the following report:

BANGALORE: Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa Wednesday said he had
directed his party legislator Prahlad Remani to apologise for his
anti-Christian statements on Independence Day.

If he does not tender an apology to the Christian community for his
statements, action will be taken against him, Yeddyurappa told reporters in
Belgaum, around 500 km from here.

Dear Goanetters:

I detest the fact that apart from Dr Barad, who is a well known mad and bad
Hindu fundamentalist, two Catholics have questioned Marshall' post on this
subject.
Marshall is one of the most secular minded poster on this forum.
When marshall posts that the BJP government in Karnataka spend 50 crores per
day on publicity against religious minority, I am sure he has done it with
careful scrutiny.
Justice Saldanha, apart from being a catholic and hence true christian is a
retired judge and therefore is used to meticulously scrutinising evidence
placed before him. He has written accurate judgements all his life. It is
therefore shameful if anyone on this forum questions the fact that there
have been 1000 attacks on christians in Karnataka.
I believe strongly that the only way these attacks will stop overnight is
when the BJP government in Karnataka is replaced by secular Congress
government.
The proof which Marshall will supply very easily is in the fact that
Marshall does not write on violence in Orissa any more. Goanetters might not
know this but this can be credited entirelyto the fall of the BJP government
at the last election.

Dear Bevinda,

The above 'item' arrived into my InBox - from you .hence this
response from me.

May I ask IF you (as in TargetGoa) are being intentionally or
negligently dishonest?

What do you mean by Mickky in big trouble for immigration and money
laundering racket in US?

Do you believe (unlike some lawyers in Goa) that until a person is tried
and found guilty of a crime, a word, i.e. allegedly, should precede
whatever the person is accused of?

And, if you were really a fair news-person, as opposed to a biased
patracar, do you believe that you should have also directed attention to
the following (attached) denial from Mr. Pacheco?

Allow me to say this:

a: I strongly believe that a person is Innocent unless he is found
guilty by a court of law (and the verdict is not overturned). Do you?
b: If the person - any person - is guilty, you are free to slam that
person. I will join you in that venture..

Additionally,

c: Is that a photograph from file'? I so, why is it placed along this
story without a 'rider'?

d: Let us all beware of sleeping (figuratively of course) with dogs. We
just might catch fleas. Some might even bite us - just because they feel
they can bite.

jc

Disclosure: I do not know Micky - nor do I ever want to know him. I have
the greatest of distrust of/for crooked Goa politicians, negligent
patracars and 'matlabi' Goa lawyers. All three sets of people are
disgusting - especially as they use the power vested in them to destroy
the lives of selective people.

And now .whether True or False here is another version of / side
to that story. I believe it was on-line before you sent out those Headlines:

Pacheco denies money laundering charges

PTI, Sep 5, 2010, 03.24pm IST

PANAJI: Goa's former Tourism Minister Fransisco Mickey Pacheco on Sunday
stirred clear of the controversy which embroils him in a major
international money laundering and fake travel document racket.

I am shocked to read what has appeared in the newspaper. My overseas
employment agency has ceased to exist since last four years, since I
separated from my wife, Pacheco told PTI at his residence in
Betalbhatim, south Goa.

Pacheco said he is ready to face any inquiry and his bank accounts are
transparent, which could be probed by any agency.

The NCP legislator is in the controversy after a national newspaper
reported that US' bureau of diplomatic security had said that the former
minister may be involved in massive immigration and money laundering
racket.

The news report mentioned that the bureau had got in touch with Indian
Ministry of External Affairs with the relevant documents and case is
being referred to CBI.

The former minister said that all the recruitments done when he ran the
agency along with his estranged wife Sara, were all `valid and with
proper documents.

I have not sent anyone abroad with forged or fake documents. I am ready
to face any kind of investigation, Pacheco said adding that he does not
know whether Sara still continues with the licence.

The former minister had to step down in June from the state cabinet
after he was booked by crime branch in connection with the death of his
close friend Nadia Torrado.

Pacheco said that his wife, Sara Pacheco, against whom he has filed a
divorce case, had licence of the recruitment agency.

I don't know whether she continued recruiting people or not. I was out
of the agency business once we separated, said the former tourism

2010-09-06 Thread Charudatt Prabhudesai
This is not a riposte to Dr. Kamat's 'a tribute to My teachers' etc.,
although his post may have prompted me to add my 2 bits to whatever that
makes Goanet tick like it does. This is also my general appreciation of
Goanet in response to its 16th anniversary. Congrats!
I may add here that Dr. Kamat's rectitude in paying tribute to his
teachers caused me to remember mine and I was amused by the irony of
their contrast: his upright gratitude and my own brand of gratefulness.
Indeed I am grateful to people beings without number, yet, while Dr.
Kamat felt inspired by them to hunt for knowledge, I felt haunted by
mine. I recalled the countless beatings I got from my teachers, and
impositions and punishment and a couple of threats of expulsion from
school.

That certainly must have something to do with our natures. While Dr.
Kamat was, I presume, obedient, I was, without assumption, the Huck
Finn. Be as it may, 'a tribute to My teachers' made me remember my
teachers today for which I wish to thank Goanet and Dr.Kamat.

The other interesting post today was by Vivek Menezes about pao and
poders. His text virtually transported me through Panjim allies, a
ghost-like trail of fresh bread eddying my nostrils, imagined yet as
real as only real can be.

I have observed over the past couple of years that all that threatening
banter on Goanet is harmless brouhaha. Something provokes an argument
and before long the issue loses its oomph and is forgotten presently to
make room for some other burning issue. Right now JoeGoaUk's identity
is burning (I suppose), unless someone else decides to set something
else on fire. It is interesting. To me, Goanet is like a large well
where in Goanetters jump as if to celebrate some cyber san-joao. I can
almost hear Goanetters in a procession singing, Dongra vellya

[Goanet] NRIs face tax threat under DTC-if you are an Non-Resident Indianapplicable to liberated Goans

2010-09-06 Thread Joseph Rebello
Hope this will not be 2 taxing for anyone of you guys and dolls who are
Non-Resident Indians working abroad for your daily bread

NRIs face tax threat under DTC

The new legislation, introduced in Parliament on Monday, says an
individual shall be resident in India in any financial year if he is in
the country for more than 59 days in that year and has been in India for
more 365 days in the four preceding financial years. A number of Indian
industrialists including Vedanta’s Anil Agarwal and Essar’s Ravi Ruia
have acquired non-resident status over the years.

“The DTC has only attempted to clean up the provision in line with the
laws globally,” said an official with the central board of direct taxes
(CBDT), the apex direct tax arm of the government.

A phrase “being outside India” in the existing income tax law exempted
individuals who stay outside the country for six months from paying
taxes. This was prone to misuse and allowed individuals to escape tax in
any country, the official said, requesting anonymity.

The new code is expected to come into effect from April 1, 2012.

More than 25 million Indians stay overseas and one million visit the
country every year. A large number of NRIs particularly those working in
the gulf countries usually visit India for longer durations.

“This could result in a situation wherein the overseas income of NRIs
may be subject to tax under certain situations,” said Vikas Vasal,
executive director at consulting firm KPMG.

Amitabh Singh, partner at Ernst Young, said this could become a
dampener for the overseas Indian population who routinely visit India to
meet their relatives and friends.

“They will now have to restrict their stay to less than 60 or be in
danger of becoming tax residents,” he said.

NRIs who have spent 365 days in the last four years, which is
permissible under the current income tax law, are at the risk of
becoming a resident and facing tax on their global income.

They will be given relief from payment of tax for two years on their
global income in the transition period when they become resident from
non-resident, a CBDT official said.

The income tax department can define the term “visit” more tightly to
ensure that there is no misuse instead of removing the provision
altogether, Mr Singh of Ernst Young said.

Re: [Goanet] Goa to be ruled by Goans

2010-09-06 Thread Inacio DSilva
Dear All,

The discussion on this topic has been nice to read. However, we all seem to be
focused on solving the problem through elections only. Our democracy is anyways
flawed, candidates will promise the moon before elections then not deliver,
with no repercussions (worst that can happen is they will not get elected
again, that too for the next election after 5 years). I remember how successive
Calangute MLAs promised to remove the River Princess she's still there.

Without regulatory bodies or media to expose malpractices, the corrupt have no
fear.

What about focusing on our people? The common Goan, the problems that they
face, the youth who will be voters tomorrow. Why does the common man feel so
helpless that he feels the need to take favors from politicians to get his work
done? Why cannot one have pride in standing on one's own feet without taking
any favors? I was in conversation some time back with a friend he was telling
me about a neighbor of his (holding a MBA degree), who wanted someone's
influence to get job! Why is it that our people feel so helpless that they
believe, that only through influence things can get done? Is it that we want
results quick without effort? Or does the common Goan believe that it's the
only way things work.

Will bringing change in perceptions in our society contribute to better leaders
ultimately governance? I agree, such a change will definitely not come
overnight.

Recently, we had the World Goa Day celebrations, which I too feel is a good
concept. But why don't we also have events such as Promising Goan Leaders,
Best Goan Inventor, Cleanest Goan Village, Social Activist Awards etc.
Maybe, rewarding hard work, excellence honesty could be a strong influence
for others too. It would also encourage others. Maybe sponsor Goans with
potential in sports / studies, sponsor research studies (environment,
economics, technology etc) in our Universities. Our next leaders may come from
these young people.

I don't agree with comments about CRAB mentality the like. I do not think
European / American society was perfect in their beginnings. Cribbing about
past not providing solutions is a waste of time. Society can change if we
bring about the change. Providing solutions for a better future is what matters.

Best Regards,
Inacio

Whether it has Septic tank/fosse connected to it?
And where the tank is based i.e. on land or in water?
What’s the  inside of the house like?
Whether the floor or the walls are always wet or damp?
Whether any aquatics life (shell fish etc) breed

Whether the house receives some regular guests like crabs etc
Whether it was built or extended  before or after
 Goa liberation 1961?
Whether it was built or extended before or after

(CRZ=Coastal Regulation Zone), if after, who
approved construction/extension?
Whether the land around it shrinked over the years say
due to soil erosion etc
Whether the River (you see) got shrinked/reduced

[Goanet] Does god exist (Goanet) another ungodly squabble (The Economist)

2010-09-06 Thread rajendra kakodkar
Dear Goanetters,

There had been many posts on goanet on the first subject. I stopped reading
them after seeing a few because they over-relied on opinions and less on facts
and figures. But a similar post on the The Economist seems to be backed
by scientific hypothesis. Read it:

ANOTHER UNGODLY SQUABBLE (The Economist)
WHEN a prominent man (or woman) of faith asserts the existence of God, nobody
takes notice. But whenever a prominent scientist raises the opposite prospect,
all hell is sure to break loose. The latest furore was provoked by Stephen
Hawking, one of Britain's best known scientists and a likely future recipient
of the Nobel prize in physics (if, as expected, his 1974 theory that black
holes emit radiation despite their notorious all-engulfing gravitational
pull is confirmed by experiments at the Large Hadron Collider in CERN). On
September 2nd The Times, a British daily, published an extensive excerpt (this
and other Times links behind a pay wall) from The Grand Design, Dr Hawking's
first major book in nearly a decade, which will hit the shelves on September
9th (reviewed here in the Financial Times by Roger Penrose, another big name in
British physics).
Never mind the niceties of string theory and its implications for physics. What
really got everybody aflutter was his contention that the Big Bang is an
inevitable consequence of the laws of physics, so that it is not necessary to
invoke God to light the blue touch paper. The jury is still out on whether
current theories really are enough to explain the origins of the universe. And
the scientific method, with its laborious procedures and peer review, ensures
we won't know for certain in the foreseeable future. But the proposition
elicited an immediate if predictable response from another quarter.
Clerics representing the Abrahamic faiths (supported by a handful of
religiously-minded physicists) weighed in, rehearsing all the tired arguments
about science providing explanations and religion offering interpretations,
science being concerned with is where faith is concerned with ought, etc.
On cue, militant atheists trotted out their own hoary lines: vacuity of the god
of the gaps, meaninglessness of the questions about the meaning of it all, and
so on.
What made Dr Hawking's revelation so jarring to the religious establishment,
and so mellifluous to its ideological opponents, was that until now he was
regarded as an ally of faith. In A Brief History of Time, the hugely popular
1988 book that cemented his fame outside academic circles, Dr Hawking seemed to
acknowledge God's involvement in the creation of the universe. This made him
something of a church darling.
Richard Dawkins, an evolutionary biologist and arguably the world's most famous
atheist, welcomed Dr Hawking's apparent apostasy, telling the Times that
Darwinism kicked God out of biology but physics remained more uncertain.
Hawking is now administering the coup de grace. He quickly added that
construing the physicist's past proclamations as anything more than a handy
metaphor was indulging in wishful thinking.
The row will peter out soon, no doubt, though not before saving Dr Hawking a
pretty penny in advertising costs for his book. The broader debate, meanwhile,
will rage on. After all, an important piece of knowledge is at stake. As Dr
Dawkins is ever keen to stress, a reality inhabited by a sentient supernatural
being is very different from a reality that isn't. In fact, they are mutually
exclusive. We either live in one or the other; we can't have it both
ways. Opinions vary on whether or not this is ultimately knowable, but there is
little doubt that the truth is out there. This Babbage would love to find out
what it is, though he isn't holding his breath.
However, another fascinating question, hitherto absent from the current
palaver, may prove more tractable. It concerns not how to explain creation
without God, but how to account for the persistence of human religious belief
without invoking its object. Evolutionary psychologists, anthropologists and
neurologists are hard at work trying to figure this out. Watch this space.

[Goanet] Non-work: Small Touching Story

2010-09-06 Thread Gina Fernandes

 SMALL TOUCHING STORY

A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5-year old son
waiting for him at the door.

SON : 'Daddy, may I ask you a question?'

DAD : 'Yeah sure, what it is?' replied the man.

SON : 'Daddy, how much do you make an hour?'

DAD : 'That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?' the man said
angrily.

SON : 'I just want to know.. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?'

DAD : 'If you must know, I make $20.00 an hour.'

SON : 'Oh,' the little boy replied, with his head down.

SON: 'Daddy, may I please borrow $10.00 ?'
The father was furious, 'If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow
some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself
straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish.
I
work hard everyday for such this childish behavior.'

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and
started to get even angrier about the little boy's questions. How dare he ask
such questions only to get some money?

After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think:

Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10..00 and he
really didn't ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little
boy's room and opened the door.

'Are you asleep, son?' He asked..

'No daddy, I'm awake,' replied the boy.

'I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier' said the man.

'It's been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you.

Here's the $10.00 you asked for..'

The little boy sat straight up, smiling. 'Oh, thank you daddy!' He yelled.

Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills. The man
saw that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy
slowly counted out his money, and then looked up at his father.

'Why do you want more money if you already have some?' the father grumbled.

'Because I didn't have enough, but now I do,' the little boy replied.

'Daddy, I have $20.00 now. Can I buy an hour of your time?

Please come home early tomorrow.. I would like to have dinner with you.'

The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little son, and he begged
for
his forgiveness.

It's just a short reminder to all of you working so hard in life. We should not
let time slip through our fingers without having spent some time with those who
really matter to us, those close to our hearts..

Do remember to share that $20.00 worth of your time with someone you love.

If we die tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replace us
in a matter of days

But the family friends we leave behind will feel the loss for the rest of
their lives.

And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into work than to our family.
PLS READ WITH FAITH.. This is an awesome prayer..

Believe it and you shall be blessed.

The problem with many of us is that we don't believe that God will open a
Window
and pour out blessings that we won't have room to receive them. I dare anyone
to
try God. He is true to His word. God cannot lie and His Promises are sure.

Three things will happen to you this coming week:

(1) You will find favor with someone you don't expect;

(2) You will be too relevant to be ignored;

(3) You will encounter God and you will never remain the same again.

My prayer for you today:
The eyes beholding this message shall not behold evil, the hands that will send
this message to others shall not labor in vain, the mouth saying Amen to this
prayer shall laugh forever. Remain in God's love as you send this Prayer to
everybody y on your list. Have a lovely journey of life!

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and He will never fail you because He is
AWESOME! If you truly need a blessing, continue reading this email:

Heavenly Father, most Gracious and Loving God, I pray to you that you

message on to.. And that the power of joined prayer by those who believe and
trust in you is more powerful than anything.. I thank you in advance for your
blessings. Father God, deliver the person reading this right now from debt and
debt's burdens. Release your Godly wisdom that I may be a good steward over all
that You have given me Father, for I know how wonderful and mighty you are and
how if we just obey you and walk in your word and have the faith of a mustard
seed that you will pour out blessings.. I thank you now Lord for the recent
blessings I have received and for the blessings yet to come because I know you
are not done with me yet.

Goa to be ruled by Goans – Crab versus Tall Poppy syndrome – Special
status or Presidential rule – Time to be serious.

It appears that the dust seem to settle with the topic Goa to be ruled
by Goans and we have seen
some good and valuable input (whatever that definition of a Goan may be)
generally we have had a rationale exchange of e-mails
on the mini e-mail list and Goanet for wider debate. We cannot deprive
others from taking part in an important issue such as

Goa and what it is going through.

I believe that tall poppy syndrome (coming from New Zealand) and crab
mentality may be slightly different given the connotations of each
vis-à-vis the angle (as a journalist or a politician would say). Tally
poppy syndrome could be compared to serious issue of ego
wanting to climb (not pull down) on others because they are equally
good. This is debatable.

As regards crab mentality, how I understand it is as follow:
  ~
“A goan fisher folk entered into a packed cameao (bus – boss in Konkani;
I am sorry I did not learn to write) with a pantlo full of crabs;
as she entered, people in the boss, started screaming and panicking
saying - Ahgo bai teo curleo bhair veteleu; to which the fisher folk said:

“bevo nakhai, the curleo ekhkha mecakh khalah vodteleu”.

This is relevant to us not only in India but even where we have made
another country as our adopted country.

Do we need to say more?

The crab mentality is not the prerogative of Goans only.? Such exist
in the Italian community, among women's groups, in the Irish community
here in Melbourne (observed it in real life), and perhaps many other
communities.? It is also known as the tall poppy syndrome.

(Wikipedia: Tall poppy syndrome (TPS) is a pejorative term used in the
UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand to describe a social phenomenon
in which people of genuine merit are resented, attacked, cut down, or
criticised because their talents or achievements elevate them above or
distinguish them from their peers.).

In my view is simply CRAB MENTALITY OF GOANS and let others take
advantage of Goans are least bothered about.
