[Goanet] RAHUL GANDHI'S IMMATURE STATEMENT

2011-05-11 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Rahul Gandhi's statement that he is ashamed to be an Indian is an
outburst of immaturity. Whatever the context, one cannot understand
how an Indian can ever be ashamed of his Nation. Could it be for being
half Italian that Rahul Gandhi's feeling Indian is only skin deep? On
one hand, we have a bunch of corrupt politicians and on the other,
pampered products of dynasty politics, propped up by sycophants. It is
time now for every Indian to feel ashamed of Rahul Gandhi and his
statement.

[Goanet] Hot Mixing of Internal Road in St. Inez Ward 13 begins

2011-05-11 Thread Sandeep Heble
What’s the point in harping about corruption when the same corrupt
politicians are elected time and again by the people?

It is well know in Goan circles today that the PWD Minister (and not
the local MLA) is allegedly the beneficiary of large cuts (stretching
from 10 to 20 percent) which often leads to sub-standard works being
carried out. Yet, these factors are overlooked and come elections; it
is freebies, the chicken and biryani that rule. In some
constituencies, distribution of a fraction of the ill-gotten ‘wealth’
happens on a weekly basis if not daily. This happens under the very
eyes and noses of the Election Commission Officials and the people as
well. Yet, nobody bothers to complain and nobody bothers to take
action. It is pointless to blame only the politicians when Corruption
has seeped deep into our system.

In the present case, an amount of 4 lakhs was allegedly demanded from
the Road Contractor and his Work Orders were stalled till these
demands were met. It is only when Parrikar intervened and threatened
to expose them all that the work Orders were issued. To the best of my
knowledge, without any bribes being paid. For the records, the hot
mixing of the Internal roads is being done for the first time in this
area. The roads were in a pathetic condition till then. One can hope
that these newly hot-mixed roads will last for at least 5 years.

Cheers,
Sandeep

Re: [Goanet] Cock-and-bull story of Ibn Majid helping Vasco da Gama

2011-05-11 Thread Tony de Sa
Dr. Colaco:
[a] It is unlikely that Vasco da Gama would have traveled all the way to
Kenya - without having made some arrangements for the onward route

[f] This resulted in many many residents of the subcontinent NOT being
forcibly circumcised (The horrible Inquisition having been noted), Hundreds
of thousands of living women not being sent to the funeral pyre of their
husbands, education being brought to the poor and the disadvantaged by that
Apartheid Caste system, and some being able to
re-obtain Portuguese nationality and be gainfully employed in Lisbon

COMMENT:

1. [a] Is debatable. There being no means of communication other than by
courier in those days, it is just possible that VDG entered Lamu / Mombasa
and hoped to find a pilot there among the many Indian sailors and traders
there.

He might have heard of them in Cape Town/ Durban, which lie further down
South or wherever he stopped to victual his ships.

2 [f] I am surprised, Doc, that as a reputable Medic you should shun
circumcision. I am informed by usually reliable medical sources that it is a
time honoured method of combating Socially Transmitted Diseases (which is a
genteel name for plain ole fashioned Gonorrhea and Syphilis) ;-)

As for some being gainfully employed in Lisbon, don't forget to mention the
hordes of them in Swindon and other places in Europe thanks to the open
border policy of the European Union.

GOACAN to ensure people's participation during
UN Decade of Action on Road Safety

On occasion of the launch of the United Nations Decade
of Action on Road Safety on 11th May, GOACAN has
resolved to intensify its efforts to make Road Safety and
Traffic Management a people's movement.

GOACAN will adopt a multi-pronged strategy to involve
people at the Village Panchayats and Municipal Councils
through Road Safety & Traffic Management Committees
for planning, participation & implementation.

During the forthcoming academic year on the campus
GOACAN will promote the importance of the Road
Safety Patrol (RSP) and garner support for the State
Road Safety Week to be observed in the first week
of July.

GOACAN will also promote the Traffic Warden Scheme
at the Village & Municipal Council level to ensure citizens
participation in making Road Safety a priority in the
neighbourhood.

With the formation of the State & District Road Safety
Councils GOACAN will seek the assistance of
teachers, Headmasters, Principals of High Schools,
HSS and Colleges to maximise the awareness programs
for students.

With a focus on the 90 pedestrians who lost their lives
in 2010 a special program will be launched this year
to highlight the importance of pedestrian safety.

Re: [Goanet] CANCER TO REMAIN INCURABLE EVEN IN 100 YEARS

2011-05-11 Thread E DeSousa
Anybody  looking for information on cancer would do well to read Dr. Sidartha
Mukerjee's "The Emperor of all Maladies".
Dr. Mukerjee according to the information available is a "Cancer Physician at
Columbia University  and Staff Physician at Columbia University Medical Center.
A former Rhodes Scholar he graduated from Stanford,Oxford and Harvard". He was
recently awarded the Pulitzer prize for this very comprehensive
and illuminating
 book on cancer.
I found the book  very informative, very well researched and providing
fascinating glimpses into the future of cancer treatment.

With respect to the subject thread,Mukerjee writes about the findings of one
ancient Egyptian named Imhotep who was a vizier in the court of King Djozer
around 2500 BC. According to the papyrus records obtained  in 1862 by one Edwin
Smith this ancient Egyptian  wrote about 48 different medical cases  one of
which was about breast cancer. It seems his Diagnosis was correct.
But he wrote under Therapy : None exists.

Today, there is cure for breast cancer and many other cancers when detected
early on. Almost everyone knows cancer survivors living fruitful lives.

The book is available on Amazon.com  and should be easily available in India
where Mr. Mukerjee was born (New Delhi in 1970)

 Best Regards.

Cutlets? Where do you get these now!

That's a nice one, Lino. If you give us one-liners in Konkani with
translations in English, you could help us to understand usage of the
words!

Just yesterday, a retired ambassador was suggesting this, as a means
of keeping in touch with Konkani. FN

PS: Anyone willing to offer Skype coaching in Konkani? Charged or

[Goanet] Konkani needs a Romi dictionary.... and fast :-)

2011-05-11 Thread Frederick [FN] Noronha * फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
You thought that Konkani is divided by scripts, dialects, geography
and accents (maybe even caste-based and definitely regional dialects).
Now take a look at this -- it even has to face up to divisions of the
decades.

This morning, I woke up to read an email, which
hit me straight in the eye. It must have been
composed in 36 point bold, and said:
"WHAT'S THIS HAIRANN? A Konkani word?
God only save the Goans and the Konkani lovers.
Do not desimate [sic] such info. At some point in
time, we will have the Marathi/Sanskitized version
(as Dr. Jose Colaco always put it) in Amchi Bhas KONKANI."

Fortunately, by the time I got to reading this, another reply came
from Lino Dourado -- known for his many Konkani posts in cyberspace,
including Goanet -- who said: "1930 vorsantli Konknni bhas ti. Xik
pora xik. Bestoch mhaka bejar (hairann) korina. Konknnint pandit khub
asat. Dekun..
Mogan, Lino" (Losely translated: It's a dictionary which reflects the
Konkani of 1930. Learn, sonny, learn. Don't unnecessarily cause me to
be 'hairann' (troubled). The field of Konkani has many scholars. Which
is why)

Later in the evening, as I was in Margao, a call came through. It was
Isidore Dantas, calling from Bombay/Mumbai. Known for his short and
frequent calls, Isidore called after ages, and this was a long one. He
patiently pointed out that the dictionary being quoted from reflected
the older version of Konkani, and its spellings were influenced by the
conventions of those times. (Like in Portuguese, the 'c' is used to
represent the 'ka' sound, instead of the more Anglicised 'k' of
today.) Likewise, there were words which are no longer in use, or not
widely known or probably changed over time.

This could cause confusion, he noted.

Isidore agreed that there was need for an updated Romi dictionary
reflecting the times. (There probably is one or more around, which we
are not aware of... and hence not using!) He said he himself had been
working on one, but it had got him tired after he reached till the
letter 'D' of the English alphabet.

Reena Martins sent me a note saying: "I had a good laugh at the first
word [DOUDIRO, -I, -EM unfortunate, unhappy]. Always amuses me. What
about dor diunk? I think it means -- go end your life or something --
not sure."

Victor Rangel Ribeiro replied via another network where this was
posting, to say: "As a child living in Saligao I heard the term
"doidiro", which meant "slightly crazy," and sometimes
"devil-may-care" and "happy-go-lucky". A "doulo" would be better
described as a "ladle". I use one in my home very day, to ladle out
soups, and sometimes canji."

Joel D'Souza of Assagao also took trouble to point out the 'c' and 'k'
thingy in spellings.

Anyway, given the many responses that have come up, it's really fun
doing this. I'm glad someone asked me to look out for suitable
dictionaries for them in Goa, even if this is a 1930 one! Stoking
controversy is one model in sound pedagogy, I guess :-)

Meanwhle, today itself I bought an inexpensive Hindi-English students
dictionary, for just Rs 30! It claims to cover "over 15,000 words" and
is very cheaply printed. But it does serve the purpose.

I doubt Goa has a large enough market to sell a product at such low
prices. But if anyone could create a basic and useful learner's
dictionary, specially in the Romi script (simply because it is easier
to access), please do get in touch! FN

True. You are right, Domnic and I get your point.

Though, when Anglicised (or used in an English context), sometimes plural of
Konkani words are formed in the English style (by adding an 's'). For
instance -- mando and mandos.

Technically, the Konkani plural should be mandde.

Anyway, keeping that aside, would you accept *bangre*? I mean, using a 'g'

2011-05-11 Thread Frederick Noronha
Some years back, Henry Scholberg's bibliography on Goa was ubiquitious and a
very important work. Today, while browsing through the Goa section of books
at the Golden Heart Emporium in Margao, I came across a comment made by him
in his own autobiography:

I got an AIIS grant to spend two months in Goa where I worked on my
*Bibliography of Goa & The Portuguese in India* in 1975. This, when it would
come out five years later, was to be my magnum opus My other
collaborator on the Goa Project was Archana Kakodkar. She was a Hindu lady;
and I found, as I compared my working relationship with her and Carmo
Azavedo who is a Christian, that the Hindu behaved more like a Christian
than the Christian did... -- From the chapter 'The Ames Library of South

I have to concede that I was not on the East African coast when Vasco
da Gama was looking for a 'pilot' to guide him to the south-western
coast of the subcontinent.

That having been noted, the following might appear reasonable to assume:

[a] It is unlikely that Vasco da Gama would have traveled all the way
to Kenya - without having made some arrangements for the onward route.

[b] While one has to try be as accurate as possible, it really matters
little whether it was Ibn Majid or a real or imagined and ? un-named
Gujrati 'pilot' who guided VDG to Calicut.

[c] Under the theory of 'respondeat superior', it is the master who
takes the credit (or blame) for the actions.

[d] Vasco da Gama is the one who opened (for better or for worse) the
sea trade route (via South Africa) from the subcontinent to Western
Europe. Hitherto, the route (controlled by the Arabs) was either via
land or via Alexandria (Egypt) and Venice (Italy).

[e] The arrival of the Portuguese into the subcontinent led to the
eventual and determining defeat of the previous masters in the Battle
of Diu.

[f] This resulted in many many residents of the subcontinent NOT being
forcibly circumcised (The horrible Inquisition having been noted),
Hundreds of thousands of living women not being sent to the funeral
pyre of their husbands, education being brought to the poor and the
disadvantaged by that Apartheid Caste system, and some being able to
re-obtain Portuguese nationality and be gainfully employed in Lisbon.

Is not that something to be happy about?

If so . what was all that 1997-98 anti-VDG fracas about?

And why do we not protest the continued vandalism by the vandals?

Our religion itself is a curse. While God became man and was born to a human
being the church formed with pope as the head distorted the religion to such
an extent that today the so called catholics are blind believers and what
they believe is what the priests tells them. Wrong religion has embedded
into our blood streams. today Mary has become a focus of our religion and
she has been raised to the sky. see how people rush to Valankani, Mount Mary
Shivaji nagar bangalore and see how they shout the chimes of Mary take us to
heaven. Today we are indulged in paganism and human beings can decide which
priest or which nun can be termed as saint. Today the Goa church wants Fr.
Jose vaz and are making so much of noise and madness. Our religion is just a
simple one line religion. " Love God and Love your neighbour. " this is far
from reality when it comes to catholic religion. Money collected for charity
is abused. No account is given to what is done with our money. Churches are
renovated and converted into palaces and the poor laity is made to pay with
no money coming from the bishop's house. The poor are still poor and the
rich can live as they want. There is no honesty among the clergy. There is
no truth with the clergy. They livwith two types of personalities. They
except the laity to pardon them so why we need confessions ? Can our
catholic religion save us ? albert

Can our
catholic religion save us ? albert

The DGP is making his case for the need of more men in the police force.
This shows that Goa has slipped from a law abiding State to a lawless State.
More the police means more is the irresponsibility of civil society. And
while the Desh Premis may try to divert the attention to extinguish the
Portuguese inlfuence, they will not be able to erase the memories of the law
and order prior to liberation of Goa.
Every Indian setting their foot into Goa ove rthe last 50 years has brought
with them only chaos and tonnes of filth to make himself comfortable. Worse
still, this is a reflection on the Goan who seems to be a part of this mess.
Instead of entertaining ourselves with the Hazares and Hegdes, it is time to
clean up our own shit accumulated in the backyard.

[Goanet] Goanet Reader: Making a tequila-like drink... from Goa and the heart of South Asia (FN)

2011-05-11 Thread Goanet Reader
Making a tequila-like drink... from Goa and the heart of South Asia

By Frederick Noronha

Those tasting it are tempted to call it tequila, though
Desmond Nazareth can't. The engineer-filmmaker turned
distiller based in Goa instead calls the spirit he bottles
"Agave spirit". Strangely enough, it all grew out of his
passion for making cocktails, and his discovery, many years
ago, of a plant growing in India that is a close relative of
the species that is used to make tequila.

But to start at the beginning: tequila is a blue Agave-based
spirit made primarily in the area surrounding the town of
Tequila, in Mexico. What goes into its making is a plant --
some 30 million are harvested each year for the spirit --
that grows in the red and black volcanic soil there.

Mexican laws state that tequila can be produced only in a
part of Mexico, and it has claimed the exclusive
international rights to the word "tequila". It warns legal
actions against manufacturers who use that reserved name in
other countries. So, while Altinho (Panjim)-based Nazareth
can't use the name, his story remains a fascinating one. And
he expects his product to take off too.

Des Naz -- as he sometimes gets called -- grew up in India,
joined the IIT and then studied and worked in the US, before
getting back here.

"Once I moved to Goa, with the help of a couple of
people here, I went searching for the plant in the
Deccan Plateau. And we found it," says he with
justifiable pride. For Nazareth, it started as a
side project. He has also been working on film and
  TV while in Goa.

"We identified the plant, and got it over." Some Agave
species can be found along the highway to Porvorim (in Goa),
he points out. But not all varieties of Agave can go into
making Agave spirit, just some specific species. They came
here, interesting enough, most probably courtesy the
Portuguese, he says.

Agave plants are perennial, but each stem flowers once and
then dies; they are commonly known as the 'century' plant.
Spanish and Portuguese explorers are believed to have taken
Agave plants back to Europe with them, and the plants became
popular in Europe during the 19th century, when many types
were imported by collectors.

"A bunch of Agave species were brought to India, but for
completely different purposes. Most was probably for
decorative uses, and one for fibre, Agave Sisalana, because
of its leaves, whose fibres have excellent tensile strength,"
he suggests.

Agave Americana is the plant he managed to find on the Deccan
Plateau. It originally grew in the belt spanning southern
North America and northern South America. In India, it has
been used as borders for fields and for soil-conservation.

"Almost everybody has seen them. They have been here for so
long. But in the process of coming here, half way around the
world they were not known to be useful for making spirit," he
says. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agave_americana]

"I noticed there are a bunch of parameters which allow it to
grow properly, which exist on the Deccan Plateau -- the
rain-shadow region of India which closely matches the Mexican
conditions," he explains.

"It all started with friends in India who kept
asking me to make cocktails for them, and I was
looking out for tequila. It was extremely costly. A
worm started wriggling in my head, wondering why
tequila is the only international spirit made in
  just one country" says he.

His background educationally is pure science, engineering,
film-making, computer science... and he's an IITian to boot.
"I'm interested in everything," says he. "I get some bugs in
my head. If they wriggle enough, I start paying attention to
them."

He started collecting information on Agave, but it was tough.
The Mexicans have a GI (geographical indicator) on it.
Incidentally, Tequila is a type of mezcal -- a generic term
for any distilled alcoholic beverage made from maguey (Agave)
plants native to Mexico -- and mezcal products these days are
less popular though exported mostly to Japan and the US.

"We can't call our product tequila, just as champagne or
cognac cannot called by those names when made outside their
home countries. But ours compares more closely to other
Mexican Agave spirits, not so much to Tequila, which is from
a particular Agave species (Agave Tequilana) with a
particular flavour," he acknowledges.

All mezcals taste very similar; the mezcal known as tequila
is unique in that it has the kerosine-ish taste, as he puts
it. "Ours is a more pleasant version. But you can immediately
tell it's an Agave spirit. 90% of the flavour and sensory
quality of tequila comes through."

"People like our product and call it tequila. I tell them
please do not call it tequila. Ours is an Agave spirit."

From 2004 to 2007 he did lots of experiments on a
small scale, and concluded that he understood
  almost everything. He f

Re: [Goanet] GOA OBIT: Audrey Dias Almeida (Porvorim), Fr Anil Soares, SJ

2011-05-11 Thread Frederick Noronha
Thanks for pointing this out Marshall. My apologies for the error and a
mix-up in the surname.

Aloysius Soares is another person, and an author whose books form part of my
collection (though not the one below):
http://www.biblio.com/books/12557989.html
http://www.amazon.com/Catholic-Church-India-historical-sketch/dp/B0007J7W0A

I knew Fr Soares and studied under him. Recently wrote the following:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/brittos/message/4527

Fr Anil probably was principal after 1979. But I do remember him as Vice
Principal.

He was a soft-spoken man, a person of few words... and a very likeable
priest, as far as I recall.

But I got to know him better when I was in college, actually, towards the
end of my stint in college.

The Church in Goa was in ferment in the 1980s, and perhaps far more socially
concerned then it is now.

Somehow, the idea came up that the vast infrastructure of Britto's, which is
used for just half a day, could be used to benefit the underpriviledged.

Fr Anil was very encourging, and for awhile, we ran a school for children of
the migrant poor, urban workers who came from another state and lived in
squalid conditions on construction sites, somewhere near the St Mary's new
campus.

I recall Fr Anil's uncomplicated manner of working, and how he made things
possible. We ran this unofficial 'school' for a few months. He struck me as
a good man. It was only recently that I learnt that he came from a prominent
family of educationists from Aldona, and his father had actually set up the
St Thomas school(s) there. Today there is a statue in the village
commemorating the contribution to his dad as, I think, Miguel has already
pointed out.

Dear Albert,

Save your breath and pray that 'Jesus' revisits us again to drive out the
'MERCHANTS' doing the roadside business well into the so call Catholic
Church, including the Vatican.

Once cleaned out, it will drop dead on it's own.
Then only the task of finding an honest, non-denying type Peter will begin.

[Goanet] TWO WRONGS MAKE A RIGHT

2011-05-11 Thread John Gomes
Justice Hegde said in Karnataka no one admits wrong.Precedent has already been
set and that justifies the wrongs! We see it regularly when Congress, BJP and
Parties spokespersons debate.
People in general are disgusted with the price rise and poor/no
administration and  that they have to survive in the existing System. This can
be compared to our Ferry crossings.Everyone rushes in and out at the same
time. There is no control/administration existing. If you want ethics and correct
etiquette, you will be jostled/pushed,bad mouthed or ejected/left behind.Either
you want to cross or not! And doing this regularly becomes a habit.Today an
honest politician  or voter is one who when bought will stay bought!
Let us hope Anna Hazare can galvanize the people to work towards getting rid
of our shackles.

[Goanet] GOA's HATE MACHINES NOW DISGUISED AS ANTI-CORRUPTION CRUSADERS???????

2011-05-11 Thread SOTER
So the Anti-'Sagres' desh premis that some months ago had accused and warned
the Archbishop of Goa about the Church having pro-Portuguese sentiments, have
now appeared in their new avatar as anti-corruption crusaders by taking shelter
behind the innocent face of Anna Hazare. Interestingly, those who stormed the
Xavier Centre for Historical Research at Porvorim to curb the freedom of
expression of an internationally renowned artist are in the fore-front of the
anti-corruption crusade. The jackals behind the un-called for communalisation
of the Medium of Instruction issue have also perched themselves upon the
anti-corruption bandwagon. We have two eyes to see a former communist student
activist shaking hands with Goa's fringe elements, well known to propagate hate
among communities, after the MoI shaadi of konkani-marathiwallas. Perhaps they
conveniently forget that suppression of rights of citizens and generating
hatred among communities for electoral gains also amounts to corruption.

Unfortunately, not every Goan is forgetful about the transgressions and
aggressions committed by Goa's secret Hate spinning machines. It may be an
innocent looking Anna Hazare, Arwind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi or a Swami Agnivesh
who will be paraded at Azad Maidan, but Goans cannot allow propagators of hate
ideologies to ride piggy back on civic issues. The cancer of religious hatred
that is spreading its tentacles in Goa needs to be arrested. The only way is
for Goans to be mindful about who they support no matter how real and alarming
the issue may be.

Enough is enough and it is time to call a 'Spade' a 'Spade'. The ideologies of
the crusaders cannot be seperated from mass movements. That is what the agents
of hate are attempting to do. People who do not believe in Equality and Freedom
of fellow citizens have no moral right to complain about other's corruption.
Goans who believe in preserving Peace and Amity in Goa need to take a hard
decision of boycotting the Anti-Corruption tiatr to be soon hoisted on innocent
civilians. The national crusaders against corruption need to know that those
they see as their allies in Goa do not believe in Gandhian non-violence.

[Goanet] Goa's Occupation (was Pictures of dead Bin Laden won't be released....)

2011-05-11 Thread marlon menezes
Guys, guys,

The problem is not with America and nor is it with Pakistan. The real problem
is
India's continued occupation of Kashmir and Goa, that is forcing the Pakistani
military to support extremists and insurgents to fight the mighty Indian
occupiers. It is time that we the oppressed and occupied peoples of Goa join
hands with our Kashmiri and Talibani brothers and break this yoke of occupation.

We will need to decide on whether Rene Barreto, who leads the Global Goan
World
Government Alliance, or Bernardo Colaco, who leads the Goa Independence Clown
party will lead us to new depths. Regardless, once freedom is achieved, we
should all demand that World Goa Day be renamed to Goa Independence day.
To quote the Beastie Boys:"You gotta fight, for your right, to paarrty". I
suggest this be made Independent Goa's national anthem.

Thank you for making my point so clear!
Every time an African leader announces that he has killed his enemy,
people climb trees around the state house, chant and start dancing,
waving tree branches in the air. While I don't think this has happened in the
USA, such scenes are now not too far away as everyone loves a strong man,
one who goes to his enemy's hometown and kills him. Why bother with a
court case when everyone knows that the accused is guilty?

[Goanet] HAS PANAJI MAYOR DEVELOPED COLD FEET OVER HOLDING MAHA SABHAS?

2011-05-11 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Will the Mayor of the Corporation of City of Panaji Mr. Yatin Parekh
not comply with one of his first promises of holding a Maha Sabha for
the citizens of Panaji on the lines of the gram sabhas being held by
Panchayats? .

Information furnished under the Right to Information Act has revealed
that the Corporation of City of Panaji has not yet taken any official
decision to hold a Maha Sabha. This has been informed by the
Commissioner of the Corporation of City of Panaji Mr. Melvyn Vaz.

It may be recalled that Mayor of Panaji Mr. Yatin Parekh and Mr.
Babush Monseratte had on 15th March this year announced that to ensure
transparency at the CCP, Maha Sabhas would be held to enable the
people of Panaji encounter the Corporators on various issues.

Although it is almost two months that the new Mayor has taken over one
wonders as to why this important issue of holding Maha Sabhas has been
shelved. Mayor Yatin Parekh should ensure that a Maha Sabha is held
once a month so that the illegalities at the Corporation of City of
Panaji could be highlighted. Such meetings would be an opportunity for
the citizens of Panaji to question the Corporators on developmental
works and publicly expose any wrong doings at the CCP. Infact such
Maha Sabhas should be held by all the Municipal councils in Goa to
ensure transparency, accountability and public participation in civic
affairs.
