Yes it is, just search for adblock plus. I think it's even a Mozilla recommended
addon these days.

As to popups and the like, you might want to look into tab mix plus which has some
more advanced options for controlling how tab/windows get spawned by events like
clicking links, opening bookmarks, etc...

I know that I have pop-ups blocked; and, that works!
NoScript is default (thanks to Brian). Learning to love/drive it.

Re: [H] Facebook

2008-09-23 Thread Soren

You're right, and sorry for my cranckiness, it came out wrong because of that.

What I wanted to say is that sites like FB are often searched by employers in regard to job applicants. In my country there recently has been several news articles on the
subject. Mostly because people over the years make several profiles on several sites and then forget about them as time passes. And ones future boss might get quite a
story from those profiles.

With the earlier compromized (also) mail servers at yahoo, google, among others, history shows that one is taking a risk about ones personal info by submitting to an
online service. Also, the usually heavy use of scripting of these online services makes it almost guaranteed that ones email addy is 'lifted' by the provider.

So, beware, and make precautions, was really all I wanted to say :)

Hear, Hear, I definitely agree with you on that!

My facebook has only a distorted partial picture of me, and email
address/etc only available to friends. No page after page of pictures,
likesdislikes, etc. I mostly use facebook for keeping in track with
friends and others who DO use it a lot. I hate reading people's
updates every 15 minutes--Going to shower, brb! Done showering,
eating cereal! finished cereal, getting smashed! etc

I learned to like facebook a lot more after I found that you can untag
yourself from photos, limit what actions of yours (the newsfeed)
that others see, disable the Wall, etc

Well, for one, bandwidth would not be an issue.

2. There is picture profiles (not entirely necessary)
3. You can upload pics of computer builds or to show a pic of a windows
problem (for example) to get more input from people.
4. Managing events (i.e. a Houston Area Hardware Group meet can be much
easier)
5. Accessing a FB group is as easy as having internet access (some people
on this list still use POP3 sans webmail access)
6. Visibility (This is a great group and why not have more people join up
and participate)
7. Get with the times. (I know old habits (albiet a good one) are hard to
break, but this is the future baby)
8. Sharing Youtube videos of say computer reviews is a piece of cake and
easily visible from FB (embedded videos)
9. Sharing Links (all the sites have link to FB now.

So on and so on.

Anyway,

I've created a group called The Hardware Group [H]. Feel free to Join up.
I will relinquish admin privliges when required.

The main thing with Facebook is I find giving up a certain amount of
anonymity is worth reconnecting with a bunch of people who I lost touch
with. I actually spend a fair amount of time on the site chatting with
old friends, etc.

If you don't put personal information on the grid, then you won't have
to worry. There's fields for phone numbers, web sites, email addresses,
etc. Don't fill them in and they can't be collected.

Just my $0.02. I can see and appreciate why people would be apprehensive
over social networking, which by it's nature requires a somewhat free
flow of personal information.

You can deactivate but I believe TOS states the OWN all data you input.

Concerning visibility of personal info it's controllable in the sense that you have
limited friends friends, and then options to prevent friends of friends or your
network from seeing it. The less you list, the less than can be exposed if that's a
concern...

Naushad Zulfiqar wrote:

Just so you know, you can deactivate and delete your FB account if you want.

I haven't read their TOS and don't know if they retain any data, but as
mentioned before, you don't need to fill in all the boxes of information.
The less u fill in the safer you will feel.

Anyway, hope this works out because I think it's good for everyone as a
whole.

Joe,
I can not say yet how good is FFv3. I have no basis for comparison.
(other than IE6 and IE7 (heavily tweaked, locked down, and modified by good
old Carroll Kong!)

I am not testing FF in a closed test. I use it daily for normal business.
I know. Risky. I'll accept this.

All I can say is FFv3 is happy with my Sister. I like it very much also. I
will figure it out in time.

And, I have only found one link I can not use with it. My bank still gives
me some internal credential error when I try to pay bills. Just pay
bills. Odd.

Bills get paid using a locked down IE! No missed checks to date.
Test period is only ~60days so far. I do so like the pop-ups that tell me
my add-ons have updates. That is nice.

I do so like adding projects to my daily todo list.

NoScript AdBlock+ w/ update subscriptions are the 1-2 punch IMHO.

FFv3 supposedly has some issues, what I am not sure as I am using it w/o problems.
Biggest general issue I have is with Adobe Flash sucking but that's a 3rd party addon
used by both versions.

FF is safe as long as you don't enable scripts on dangerous site since nothing
runs, no JS, no JAVA, no Flash, or any other addons. Now if the browser's engine
sans-addons has exploits I am not aware of any, YMMV...

Yes the HCON west was at my house in Phoenix, really enjoyed the get

Mark,
Thanks for that share; at least my brain is still in sync.
Between us (mostly you) it is correct!
So sorry for your troubles in Houston. I lost track of you for a time.
Tough times. If you need anything, please call (email). If I have it, and
it can limp along for awhile, it is in the mail/brown truck/fedex.
Happy to know you and yours are breathing. I can only sit and imagine
the carnage that has to be there ATM.
Best,

Yes the HCON west was at my house in Phoenix, really enjoyed the get
together, yes Harry then was a unique individual, but then there was Kevin
also coming all the way he did just to get a Netgear switch, RT318 or RT314
I think it was.
I was in Alpharetta this year for a week working on some older machines and
helping out the ATT site there, bet I was pretty close to you then, wish we
could have got together.

Thank you Mark,
Glad you are back and OK. I'll file this share away.
Still emotional about the sheer amount of destruction in your local area
from what I see on the news.

Query?: I thought you left the AZ desert for the PacNW. How did you get to
where you is now?
Just a bit confused? Maybe just me; and a few missed List mails.
:)

The Republic of Texas just simply rocks. Been there, worked there, lived
there, enjoyed every minute. Even the long trip from El Paso to the
river. Son, you just have way too much real estate! Really!
So glad you are back. Still recall our HCON at FORC5's, or, perhaps your

Really? What lookup did you use, I get:

Location: Seattle (47.611N, 122.333W)

Well far from perfect since it's a national ISP. Verizon lists mine as
Seattle which is 500mi+ away...

Google maps seems to show your street, but not your house. That long
driveway with the satellite dishes is suspect though.. :)

Really spooky, Google street view shows my house and my mom's house
perfectly. I have no idea when they drove the camera car down the
street. I hate that kinda shit..

If used properly, such as creating a group by invite only or by
authorization, we can control it well.

Additionally, it can help us with our [H] addiction by being able to access
it anywhere. This is for people who don't use a webmail account to
subscribe to [H]
