Hi
I've been out of the loop for a while. Please help me find the
info I need to help a cong. with a great library that wants to
improve their classification system. I know there's Weine but there
is also the other one that Rita helped develop. Any help would be
appreciated.

[ha-Safran]: My query about the matzah film

2009-02-03 Thread Marion Stein
Dear Colleagues,
After sending the last email, I 'googled' the subject and it
came right up. For anyone interested, this film is wonderful. It
is now available on DVD. I highly recommend it. It's called Let's
Bake Matzos and it's from Sholom B. Goldstein NTSC. You can get it
from Judaism.com, a Chabad website. Well worth showing to kids
ages 6-10. I used to show it every year at Yeshivah Har Torah.

In addition, I just returned from an organic farming
workshop where I attended sessions about growing organic grains here
in New York State. The main producer,ho was one of the presenters,
spoke about growing grain for matzah. He said that when he follows
the rabbincal laws, he gets the very best grain product. I intend
to follow up on this and whatever information of interest I can
gather, I will pass along. Marion

Dear Ms. Stein,

We are actively pursing online rights for several Israeli
publications, as we share your view that this is a considerable
omission in our online products. Presently, we have asked our
licensing team to contact the following papers:

Jerusalem Post
Haaretz
Arutz Sheva

If you have any suggestions as to other publications you would like

Ms. Nagel,
Yesterday I participated in a webinar with Stacey
Knibloe. I was very enthusiastic about this new program which we
have already ordered. But sadly on in depth investigation in
preparation for a presentation to our faculty, my colleague and I
discovered that there are no newspapers or periodicals in the
resource list from Israel.
This is unconscionable given the world situation. I would
have expected much more balanced coverage from a product that
purports to be unbiased and shows all sides of an issue. What is
your explanation for not including Israeli newspapers and periodicals
in your list of resources? As you know, there are several English
language and other western language newspapers from Israel.

 Respectfully submitted,

[ha-Safran]: Gale's new global issues in context (GIC)

2009-01-12 Thread Marion Stein
Dear Colleagues,
I have just purchased this new Gale product using my NYS
money. The format is very user friendly and allows a great deal of
variety. It includes several hundred news sources in it's list of
resources. It has many from Arab countries.
After a closer look at the content, I have found that their
resource list includes only one from Israel, namely 'Globes. Tel
Aviv' an economic news product. It has no news publications from
Israeli newspapers or periodicals. This troubles me very much and
I've contacted the product managers at Gale about this.
I was wondering if anyone else has looked at this item and has an
opinion about it? Marion Stein

Yes, Rhonda, you are right. Gale's Encyclopedia of Race and Racism
was faulted by the ADL when it came out for including an article on
Zionism written by a person whom ADL claims is a known anti-Zionist,
Noel Ignatiev. I also found an article from Deborah Lipstadt
criticizing Macmillan of the same issue; namely including Zionism in
their encyclopedia of racism. It's really hard to keep up with all
this distortion.

[ha-Safran]: Global Issues in Context

2009-01-12 Thread Marion Stein
Colleagues,
This is new product from Gale that has many fine features
in terms of its flexibility. It is rich and covers many
topics. But unfortunately it does have a bias that does not please
anyone who cares about Israeli coverage and an unbiased look at the
Middle East. Granted there are many fewer news resources from
Israel than there are from all of the Arab world and Middle East in
general, but this product so far has one newspaper from Israel. It
is' Globes- Tel Aviv', an economic newspaper. That is it.
Over the past 2 days, I've been bringing this fact to the attention
of hasafran and the members of HVLA, the Hudson Valley Library
Association of which I am a member. What follows is a letter by one
of the HVLA librarians who was equally disturbed by this
realization. Her letter to one of the product managers at Gale, the
producer of this product, tells how she feels. She has given me
permission to share this with you for your information.
I have been in touch with several people at Gale who say they are
working on remedying this situation. The product is brand new and
hopefully shortly they will have multiple Israeli sources as part
of the resources from which they draw their information and which
they offer to their subscribers. We can never rely completely on an
aggregator, but their should have some attempt to cover more than
just one side from the locale and all references to the other from
external sources.

I'm sorry that I have to inform you of this. I like the product and
hope that they will come through with acceptable Israeli sources.

Hi Craig:
Happy New Year! Sorry I didn't return your message; it's my 1st week back
from break, and I'm still digging out.
To be honest, I'm concerned about the bias in your products. I previewed
Global Issues in Context and I noticed that Gale does not provide
articles from major Israeli news outlets about the conflict in Gaza. Why
is the coverage unbalanced?
Moreover,Hamas members are described as 'militants'. I believe that the
US, along with other nations has classified Hamas as a terrorist organization.
The same bias exists in your Custom Newspaper database; there is minor
representation of Israeli media. I would think that Gale would make an
effort to include more stories from a country that has such a vital role
in world politics.
After the Encyclopedia of Racism fiasco, I would think that Gale would
have made more effort to provide fair and balanced views on world issues.

[ha-Safran]: HASAFRAN digest 3842

Please note this email from Barbara. Can't we do something to make
the digest useful? Marion

Subject: Re: [ha-Safran]: HASAFRAN digest 3842

Hi Marion and Joan,

I looked at the Hasafran Digest and came to the same conclusion as
you - scrolling and scanning takes a lot of time. So, I'm back to
getting each individual item separately.

Here's what I do. First, I scan the list and delete those I know for
sure are not relevant. Then, with the remainder, I just hold down the
shift key while clicking on 5 postings in a row starting with the
oldest to highlight them. While shift key is still down, I
doubleclick on the 5 highlighted items and the 5 postings open on my
screen simultaneously. Then, I quickly scan -- those I don't want I
click on delete, those I want I can either read now or just close
the email and go back to it later. I can go through lots of postings
very quickly this way. (I've never tried more than 5 - but I'm sure
it would work.)

I'm retired now - so much of Hasafran is not relevant except what I
can glean for our AJL of So. California website, of which I am
webmaster. So, I know the frustration of wasting valuable time. Good luck.

[ha-Safran]: HASAFRAN digest 3842

2008-11-11 Thread Marion Stein
Joan and I would like instructions on the most efficient way to read
the Hasafran. The goal in receiving it in this format is to allow
the reader to ONLY read the ones he/she is particularly interested in
and NOT all the rest. Having to scroll through all the items rather
than being able to click on the relevant ones is not so helpful.
How is this digest meant to be used? We'd like some expert
advice. Thanks, Marion Stein

[ha-Safran]: How to use the digest

2008-11-06 Thread Marion Stein
I must be very dense, but I cannot figure out how to use the digest
format of this listserv. I see the subject list at the beginning but
I cannot figure out how to access the items in which I am interested
without scrolling thru all of them which is impossible for me to
do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

[ha-Safran]: Kindle

2008-07-23 Thread Marion Stein
Hello,
Is anyone buying kindle for the library setting?
I'd like to know how it's being used. When you 'buy' a book for
the Kindle, how long do you get to keep it? Is it possible to fill it up?
Answers to these and any other relevant thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi,

My name is JD Gins and I am the donation coordinator at Books Beyond
Borders. Thanks for your interest in donating your books to Books Beyond
Borders a pick up might be possible if you are located in or near Austin
Texas. In order to donate your books all you need to do is box them up,
weigh each box and email me the info. I can then send you UPS shipping
labels, also via email, to be printed out, attached to the boxes and
sent from any UPS store.

We cannot accept any, discarded grade school textbooks, old
encyclopedias, mass market books (i.e. south beach diet etcÂ…) and books
in poor condition. Our bread and butter books are new and used college
textbooks printed in the last 7 years. ChildrenÂ’s books are tricky for
us, and we are can only to accept them if they are new or like new. We
also accept new and gently used fiction and non fiction as well as rare
and antique books. Please let me know if your books fit the sort of
books we can accept.

Right now we are attempting to keep our shipping cost down. Our efforts
are in support of our non-profit affiliate, Project Schoolhouse, which
combats poverty and inequality with an investment in literacy and basic
educational infrastructure in rural communities within developing
countries.

This Summer Project Schoolhouse completed a new elementary school out
side La Ceiba, Nicaragua, which will provide educational opportunities
to more then one hundred underprivileged students. The new school is the
largest building in this small rural community as well as the only
building with running water and electricity. Please visit
projectschoolhouse.org to learn more. Click completed projects under
Kiwaska, Nicaragua. It is the Escuela Thomas Langdon Barker, and we did
it all with the support of college textbook stores and people like you.

If you are able to covering the cost of shipping your donation that
would be a great benefit for our organization as we stock the new school
with books and begin preparation for the next school building project.
Either way please let me know how you would like to proceed. Please feel
free to contact me with any questions. Thank you for your time and
consideration.

Best Wishes,

J.D. Gins

[ha-Safran]: a really good geographic database

2008-01-28 Thread Marion Stein
Hi,
We were subscribed to the world atlas online from Facts On
File. We are due to renew it and I've taken a close look at it. I
am really not satisfied with it. It seems very superficial and out
of date to me. If you look at their bibliographic references, they
are all 2000 or earlier imprints. Also, for example in the China
entry, there is nothing under economy about their manufacturing; it's
all about agriculture. It's possible that I've missed something
there but it is not very inclusive.
I've tried to find other geographic databases and have only
been able to find ones that are very scholarly and specific to
different areas of interest. If anyone has any recommendations for
a website of this kind, that is appropriate for high school and is
comprehensive, I'd be very appreciative.Marion

interesting. We had talked briefly at a meeting about a cooperative
collection development for our various schools. I don't know if it
makes sense now to consider using this list as a starting point for
sucha collection. The titles are scholarly and I don't know that we
ALL need to own this stuff. Let's consider it. I hope you all got

I have become aware of a collection of Judaica books that are in
excellent condition and many of them on timely, interesting
topics. Included are current and less current titles. No, or very
few, Sifrei Kodesh are among these books.
Since the libraries in New Orleans are already well
restocked, I was wondering if there are any other Gulf Coast
communities still in need of library materials. Please contact me at
the address below if you have any interest in receiving any of these
materials. There are also a 2 copies of the Encylopedia Judaica
among these donations.

Looking forward to hearing from someone. Marion

Dear HaSafran,
I have joined an Avi Chai committee to find out what resources are
available to our members (Avi Chai Bookshelf librarians) from their
own states and local municipal and county, etc. agencies. Here in
New York we have both city and state as well as federal programs that
assist us with our library purchases.
My assignment it to find what help is available in the following
states: Ohio, Texas, Massachusetts and California.
I am writing to request that any librarians from those four states
contact me with the specifics of the assistance they have in those
states. For example, in NYS we have something called Nylink which is
a library connection through which we can access many library related
services. I have access to the OCLC Cat Express cataloging resources
through Nylink. In addition, here we have free access to databases
from another NYS library organ called NOVEL. It stands for New York
Online Virtual Electronic Library. We also have the BOCES for the
counties outside the NYC metro area. We also have a local New York
City School Library System which can supply some services to us free of charge.
Those of you from Ohio, Mass. Cal. and Tex. please, please take a
bit of time to head me in the right direction for the contacts for
similar resources in your fine states.
 Thank you in advance.

RE: [Hasafran] Benjamin of Tudela

2006-05-21 Thread Marion Stein
As a person who has done rather extensive work on Benjamin of Tudela, I
was thoroughly delighted with the Shulevitz version. I think it is
appropriate to many different ages ad might well inspire an older
student to go to the primary source; his diary which is available in a
Hebrew/ English edition : The itinerary of Benjamin of Tudela; critical
Hebrew Text, English translation and commentary by Marcus Nathan Adler,
Philip Feldheim, Inc, NY, first edition, London 1907. I have a personal
copy of this work and used it in creating a study unit in Jewish history
of the Medieval period for Junior HS students about 26 years ago.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Convention venue

2005-07-06 Thread Marion Stein
I agree with Naomi. I've attended conferences on college campuses and
they are very successful. Realistically, people do not have time to
tour the city in which the conference is held and do justice to the many
sessions offered at the conference. So why not be at a location without
distractions? As for the food, we'd have to see because it is important
for everyone to be together for meals. I remember a convention in
Cleveland where we had buffet style service and the food was DELICIOUS.
I'd be willing to work on this reformatting of convention as well.

To one and all:
As Bibliography Bank coordinator, it pleases me to send out this

President of the SSC division and bibliographer extraordinaire, sends this
message to the list:

Every Spring, the Greater Cleveland Chapter of AJL presents one of its
most
well-attended programs, a round-up and review of noteworthy new books that
have been published since the chapter's Jewish Book Month lists from the
previous year were compiled. Annotated lists of these books, fiction and
non-fiction, for children and adults, are now part of the Bibliography
Bank. To find them, visit www.jewishlibraries.org, click on the Resources

Now that the Bib Bank is electronic, it provides us with a much more

[ha-Safran]: Health magazines for HS students

2005-05-11 Thread Marion Stein
Dear Librarians,

We subscribed to some heath and fitness magazines on the
recommendation
of our PE teacher. When they came in we have noticed that they are mainly
either advertisements for products, diet related articles and lots of
pictures of scantily clad men and women. That is not all; most of them
have articles about sexuality that are completely inappropriate for our
target age group.

Do any of you have recommendations of magazines about health and
fitness
that are geared to the adolescent group that is both serious,
non-commercial and appealing to students? This is a hard set of criteria
to meet. Thanks in advance for any help you can be.

[ha-Safran]: The New AJL Bibliography Bank

2005-04-14 Thread Marion Stein
Dear AJL
The New Bibliography Bank on line is up for your bibliographical
needs.
Please note that ALL bibliographies that were not available on line have
been eliminated. As Bib Bank coordinator, I'm in the process of compiling
a list of older bibliographies that are worthy topics and need to be
updated. In addition, as you can see the list is very pared down. We ALL
need to actively flesh it out again. It would be great to see some new
comers. Our indefatigable contributors continue to keep us supplied, but
wouldn't it be nice to have an infusion of bibliographic blood from other
donors? That means YOU (and me).

 Marion M. Stein, Bibliography BAnk
Coordinator

[ha-Safran]: Passing along excellent judaica and other books

2005-03-16 Thread Marion Stein
Dear Colleagues,
I have MANY fine books mainly judaica in English that are
duplicates of
items we have in our collection. At our day school workshop a month ago,
someone mentioned that there is a way to send these books to Israel. Also
someone mentioned that there are schools in the states that might want
them. How do I do this? I would like NOT to have to make up a list but
if that is necessary, please tell me. Marion

Dear Marion,

I teach the story The Split Cherry Tree (in Hebrew) in 9th grade. A
movie was made based on this story. I searched for the video but was
unable to find one. Can you please see if you can locate the movie
(perhaps in a library somewhere...?)

[ha-Safran]: Google and US

2004-12-15 Thread Marion Stein
I'm sure that I'm not the only one who read or heard about the astounding
developments in the world of information delivery that was announced
yesterday. In fact the NYTimes had it as the lead article on the front
page.
My question for all of us is: How does this impact our work right now
and going forward into the next year and the next decade? We should
certainly have some sessions on this at convention this year. Who among
us is an expert? We need input from all vantage points; SSC, RS, and a
breakdown of each. This is something really HUGE.

I'm also aware that we are not exactly taken entirely by surprise. The
internet and databases have been developing over the past few years but
this is like an avalanche after the blizzard. Let's put our information
professional heads together and make the most of this for our profession
and for our varied patrons. Marion Stein

RE: [ha-Safran]: Out of Print Titles

2004-05-27 Thread Marion Stein
I think this is a great problem and we in AJL SSC division should take
it up very seriously as an agenda item and put someone in charge of
working on this to try to get some action by any publisher willing to
take this on. Perhaps we could do something like what's happening at
NYBC. National Yiddish Book Center and create a 'print on demand' list.

It is important to make people aware of the Dewey 22 schedule in

One could compare the two and then decide if we want an update of the

I found We Just Want to Live Here terrible. I believe it is a lie
based on a lie. The book is promoted as a conversation between two
friends, but in fact the two girls were barely acquainted and were put
together by the editor for the purpose of the book. The Jewish girl's
family is from the farthest left-wing group, a Marxist-Communist
organization, with no feeling and no knowledge of the Jewish religion or
Jewish claims to the land. The overall picture is that the Israeli
government doesn't represent the people; the government is evil and
repressive and violent, and the Jews are as powerless against it as the
Arabs are. There is almost no historical context. This is a political
piece written by left-wingers with a left-wing agenda. I haven't read
A Little Piece of Ground so I can't compare them, but this is bad
enough.
