read the relevant IBM's SMS manuals first, Theo. just like altering SYS1.MANx or SYS1.DUMPx datasets, you ADD first, DELETE thereafter. another (terrible) alternative is to get the Sysplex CFRM CDS redefined. this will force SMSVSAM to request re-registration of the SHCDS - the impact of this action is Sysplex-wide. - ravi. If you are currently allocated as 340 X 340 and you change to the recommended 340 X 8840 you will end up using only about 1/3 the amount of dasd. The reason that 8840 was chosen was that it gives well over 90% utilization on the DASD track; yet doesn't require a huge amount of ECSA to be reserved. Also, for direct I/O (read a single record, write a single record) we have to read and write a block at each time. So, to read a 340-byte record requires a read of either 8840 bytes of 27880 bytes. Granted, the majority of I/O time is spent on connecting to the device versus actually transferring the data; but still do you really want to xfer 27880 bytes every time you want to read or write a single record. We do have some clients runing with 27880 and they report no problems. So, the choice is yours. But for space utilization, 8840 is close to optimum but only requires a total of 26,520 bytes of ECSA versus 83,640 bytes. Strictly your choice, but the only reason for blocking the TMC is improved space utilization and 8840 will give you a three-fold improvement. Re: ILR005E PLPA PAGE DATA SET FULL
ooo ... if IBM had that motto, the MVS wouldn't have progressed to z/OS. i believe if a change provide benefits that far outweighs the risks, i'd go for it. i've done DDCONS(NO) and used SMS to assign default dataclass to DSORG=PS so that DFHSM can migrate them later - else i end up with DSORG=null and space management headaches. if i went with your motto (as my current employer does), my operators would have had problems while performing an IPL (CICS, DB2, DFHSM taking long time to shut down) - solved with the DDCONS(NO). these were not management problems, but then management didn't need to know the details of the changes either! crucially, they won't bring the house down. these were the better things that i've done 8-) - ravi. Ted MacNEIL wrote: Channel pathing? Why not? If it ain't broke? I have better things to do than to 'split up' things that have been together for years. My point was (all along): who cares? Don't worry! Be happy. And, as for the original poster, why did/does management care? It's like certain assembler coding constructs that are in general use. They're understood: they work: they don't hurt. Even if custom volume are all the rage, I would do it as a volume to fit PLPA @ 1 cylinder, add COMMON. -teD -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html

on setting GRSRNL when GRS=NONE
we've 2 monoplexed LPARs (z/OS 1.4) sharing DASDs for among other things, the CDSs for HSC. i'd like to define RNL exclusion list for the STK qnames STKALSQN STKENQNM. our IEASYSxx has the entry GRS=NONE. does this imply GRSRNL=EXCLUDED ? or am i able to do a T GRSRNL=xx ? many thanks. - ravi. -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
Re: on setting GRSRNL when GRS=NONE
thanks Mark. our STGADMIN guy ran into problems on Fri night when he set HSM to backup the shared volumes. i was informed one of the settings in ARCCMDxx was HSMSERIALIZATION. suddenly there was *MASTER* pending on both LPARs: HSM on one side, HSC on the other. i was thinking: will it hurt to alter ARCCMDxx to USERSERIALIZATION instead of worrying about GRS parms ? i hope there aren't any drawbacks ... - ravi. Since you are not running GRS (GRS=NONE), then it is a moot point. There are no RNL lists used. There is no reason to exclude those QNAMEs since there is no propegation of ENQs across systems. But if you were running GRS (or MII) then you would want to exclude those names. I once tried adding them to MII (using CTC communications, not a CF) and STK VSM performance went to the toliet. Good thing I was able to back out the change easily.
