Subject: z9BC last POR time

Hi folks

Silly question probably, I'm sure I've seen this somewhere..

I can find out the date/time of the last IPL of an individual z/OS image
(D IPLINFO) but can I find out from anywhere (z/OS? HMC?) what was the
date/time of the last POR of the box?

Cheers

Brian

Re: STK-SUN-Brocade switch--2032 IOdef

2008-06-10 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
Do you use the Brocade ECFM software to configure the switch (level 9.6
is current level, I believe)? I am working with Brocade i10k's, but I
think your switch should use ECFM as well. If you don't have current
level, you should upgrade that first.

You should still be able to get devices connected if the IODF has an
error on just some of the devices. Seems like zoning is the problem.
Let me know if you use ECFM and I will try to stimulate my brain with
caffeine to remember the details.

Is this a new switch? If so, make sure you have the default zone
enabled for the fabric. Default zone allows all WWPNs that are not
defined to a zone to go into a default zone. I had an issue recently
setting up a brocade switch. Nothing would connect until I zoned it or
enabled the default zone. There are a few bugs in the software that
seem to prevent you from enabling the default zone, but eventually, we
got it to work.

Re: STK-SUN-Brocade switch--2032 IOdef

2008-06-10 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
There is an issue with enabling the default zone in EFCM. For some
reason, at least on the i10ks, the default zone box is grayed out, so
you have to trick the GUI into enabling it. This is how: Sign on to
EFCM, highlight the switch, and select the Configure\zoning tab. When
the pop-up appears, select the Zoning Policies button. You can enable
default zone from there. If it is grayed out, you must toggle the
Safe Zoning Mode checkbox, then click OK. Go back into the Zoning
Policies, uncheck the Safe Zoning Mode checkbox, and the Default
Zone should then be accessible. Mark it enabled, and Safe Zoning
disabled. Close the dialog box, and then activate the zoning
configuration.

You want to use the default zone if you can, that way, you don't have to
rezone anything if a GBIC is replaced (since it will have a different
WWPN, it will have to be added to the zone). Default zone says to put
everything that is not explicitly coded into zone, into a zone called
default. This allows any-to-any connection within the switch, which
works, since you define the paths through the switch in the IOCDS.

Steve

Change this from HCD option 4, put 'C' next to the CU, press enter, then
scroll right once. There is a column for 'CU Add'

Also, when you define the devices, remove MP from access list to
3C00-3C08. Same goes for BP with 4C00-4C08. HCD should warn you if you
didn't (can cause a loop).

I thought the HCD reports and the K command would only work if the CTC

Re: Unable to complete IPL - message IOS120D

2008-02-08 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
Are there any outstanding replies? I would think that if there is an
issue with that volume being offline, there should be a 'reply device
name or cancel' outstanding.

Also, how did you start JES2. If you started it without the noreq parm,
then you will have to issue the $S command after the S JES2 to get JES2
to do it's thing

Subject: Unable to complete IPL - message IOS120D

I am attempting to IPL our test system - which is being upgraded to z/OS
1.7 (Prod is at 1.4) - I know 1.7 won't last long before it has to be
upgraded again.

I have just taken over this system from a colleague who has done most of
the SeverPac install - and now passed it on to me.

Soon after IPL we get the message:

*01 IOS120D I/O TIMED OUT FOR DEVICE 044D. REPLY 'WAIT'
FOR I/O COMPLETION OR 'CONT' TO CONTINUE WITH DEVICE OFFLINE

As the manual indicates, if we reply 'WAIT', the message reappears, and
replying 'CONT' puts the volume offline.

After reply 'CONT' I can start JES2, and then doing a 'D A,L' reveals
that LLA, VLF, DLF, JES2 and RACF are all running - I have remove
automatic starts of other tasks - and taken away the DD Commands for the
DUMP datasets, and removed SMS from IEFSSNxx - but they make no
difference.

After that tasks will not start properly - when attempting to start
IRRDPTAB, TCPIP etc, they go into 'STARTING' mode.

This volume should not be needed on our system - it is the 'Catalog'
volume on our 'prod' system containing Master Catalog, page datasets,
RACF dataset, MANx datasets, IODF, ACDS, COMMDS, Checkpoint. Not a happy
collection together - but it is a relatively small system.

There are no references to this volume in out test catalog, nor any
other references I can find such as PROGxx.

The ServerPac is dated September 2006 - and I think it unlikely that any
extra maintenance has been applied.

The previous guy did successfully IPL, but he hasn't taken any
intermediate backups.

Can you suggest why this volume is being accessed. Or some way out of
this problem - is it maybe a hardware problem ?

Printing tilde and caret

2008-02-01 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
Greetings Listers,

We have a need to print the tilde and caret on some of our reports using
an Infoprint 4000 series printer attached to the mainframe via PSF over
IP. The reports contain 'xB0' (caret) and 'xA1' tilde, but 'xB0' prints
as a degree sign and 'xA1' prints as a blank. The degree sign for
'xB0' seems to match the ISO-8 character set, not EBCDIC/codepage 037
character set.

Is there a way to code a translation table for PSF printing, or is there
something on the printer that needs to change? Perhaps I am going the
wrong direction here, so any input would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Steve

Re: Multiple Subchannel Set Usage

2007-12-20 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
What do you mean by they never see it? What command/tool are they
using? What generation of processor is it?

I haven't implemented it yet, but from the test I did, you can make the
base and alias the same device number but one is in LSS 0 and the alias
is in LSS 1. I don't know what that would look like on the D M=DEV or D
M=CHP command. Try using DEVSERV or RMF to view them if you are not.

Also, make sure the bases defined as 3390B and the aliases defined as
3390A's in the I/O Gen?

A colleague modified the exit for z/OS 1.7 and used exit 54 instead.
Here's what it looks like.

It's not working though and I was wondering if someone could spot the

and I'm not an assembly language programmer. The code doesn't crash
and burn, but simply allows everything through. Can anyone help?

Re: Devices

2007-10-22 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
How did you display the devices? Do you see and devices when you do D
M=CHP(xx).

You will see not validated/not operational devices if you did not set up
the OSA ICC config on the HMC (under OSA advanced faculties.)

If you don't see any devices at all, I would check which OS Config your
load parms are using (or do a D IOS,CONFIG and check the CONFIGURATION =
) and make sure the devices are attached to that OS. The OS config is
in the IODF, so you can't get that from the IOCP, since the IOCP only
contains hardware related information.

Three of the four LPAR D M=CPU displays seem to be correct. The odd LPAR

If the physical CEC has 'n' CP's, no LPAR can have more than 'n' LP's.

Re: Concurrent Upgrade Puzzlement.

2007-09-12 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
From the PR/SM manual:

LPs can be defined to have as many CPs as are present on the underlying MCM.
 Copyright IBM

So Hal indeed has an anomaly (unless z/OS.e is more VM like than I thought.)
He shows 3 CPs enabled from the service element. I will be interested to see
if it will be fixed with an IPL, deactivate/activate of the LPAR, or other
solution. I wonder if work is actually being dispatched on the fourth logical
CP.

Speaking of terminology changes over the years, LPs = Logical Partitions in the
PR/SM manual, not Logical Processors. What ever happened to LPAR? Good grief!
I must not be part of the trendy mainframe crowd anymore. ; )

Terminology error on my part.

What I meant was:

Unlike VM, no single LPAR can have more logical CPs than there are physical
CP's on the CEC.
So, if you have 4 GP's, no LPAR can have more than 4 CP's defined to it.
(You can, however, have RSVD CP's defined, so that you can add more LP's, if
you dynamically add more GP's, without a POR or an IPL)

It's been awhile, but VM used to allow a guest more 'active' CP's than were
physically installed.
This is what I meant by virtualisation of CP's.

The terminology definitions have drifted in meaning over the last 20 years.

Is the model type that is returned from the D M=CPU command correct on that
system?

I would think (just a logical guess - so proceed at your own risk) that if you
issued the CF CPU(03),OFFLINE it would go offline and the status of the CPU in
the D M=CPU would change from + to N. You probably wanted to CF
CPU(03),OFFLINE prior to conversion. I know that is part of the procedure when
removing engines after using o/oCUoD.

Don't forget to change your activation profile on the HMC to the correct number
of initial CPs and deactivate/activate your LPAR(s) when you get a chance.

We just upgraded our z/890 from a model 450 to a model 370. That translates to
one less CP, but the overall power increases from 97 to
158 MSU's. There was no requirement for an outage (IPL, POR) given, so we
elected to do it concurrently. (We IPL/POR only when we have to.)

There was no visible event as the change took effect. RMF displays seem to be
all in sync.

However, a D M=CPU command comes back with different results on one LPAR. That
one still shows four CP's online. Any ideas?

Re: Concurrent Upgrade Puzzlement.

2007-09-11 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
I can tell you that when you activate an on/off capacity upgrade on demand
order, the processors that were status of N (not available) change to -
(offline) in the display command, same is true when the capacity is removed.
At least that is what I saw on a 2084 and 2094.

My theory would be that it is just a virtualized engine to begin with and you
have more logical CPs than physical on that LPAR now. Do you notice any
dispatching delays or performance impacts?

Interesting... Perhaps you can check the Service Element CPs status. Sign in
as SYSPROG and right-click on the processor. Select CPs in the menu. You
can check if CP 03 is online from there.

I also thought it odd that the operating system did not seem to notice a

the D M=CPU would change from + to N.

Steve

z/OS 1.6 PTF for 32 CPs per LPAR

2007-08-15 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
Does anyone know what z/OS 1.6 PTF changes the maximum number of CPs per LPAR
from 24 to 32? I have done multiple searches and found that one supposedly
exists, but I can not find the exact PTF number.

Thanks in advance,

Re: Searching an utility to Query if a library is LLA managed

2007-07-30 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
There is a SYSDSN enqueue on the dataset for the LLA address space when it is
allocated to LLA. Perhaps that can be a starting point for you. Tools such as
TASID (IBM) or WHOHAS (DA$ENQS from Dave's MVS freeware website).

We usually update members of any library in any time. We would like to know if
this library is LLA managed to prevent useless LLACOPYs. We are searching for
an utility, with library as a parameter, to query if it is LLA managed or not.
We want to avoid a console activation / deactivation and doing an D LLA

Do you know if there is any interface module that does something like this?

Thanks a lot!

Re: PAGTOTL value

2007-07-05 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
Rick,

PAGTOTL indicates the number of PARTEs that are built at IPL time. Each page
dataset uses one PARTE. IBMLink has a pretty good explanation of PARTEs and
how they are reused with PAGE ADD/DEL. Search the QA library for document
BDC32239 or PAGTOTL.

Don't forget the first 3 PARTEs are used for non-LOCAL page data sets, so at
most, you can have 17 LOCAL page datasets active to the system at any given
time. You should be able to accomplish your move.

Subject: PAGTOTL value

Hello,

I have a question regarding PAGTOTL parameter. Our setting is set at
PAGTOTL=(20). We currently have 12 local page datasets defined at IPL.
We would like to add 4 additional local page data sets from a new DASD pool.
Then Page Delete/Drain the original 12. This is necessary because of a DASD
migration we are in the process of. We will then add 12 new volumes from the
new DASD pool. Lastly, delete the four we added at the beginning.

My question is this: Does the PAGTOTL value reflect a cumulative number of
page adds? Technically we will be adding 16 page volumes, in addition to the
12 that were there at IPL. This total value along with the original 12 exceeds
the PAGTOTL=(20) value.

After reviewing both the Init/Tuning guide and the MVS Commands manuals, I came
away with the idea that PAGTOTL is a value the reflects the total number of
page data sets that can be in use at any one time during the IPL. However I
just wanted to make sure.

Thanks,

Rick

Re: Shared ICP between 2 SYSPLEXES

Do you mean CFP (ICP are Internal Coupling Peer, which have no physical
connection and are limited to within a single CEC)?

I believe the limitation is only that there can be only on CF accessed on each
end of the CFP.

Washington Systems Center published zSeries Peer Mode Links whitepaper in
September of 2002. It should be available at the IBM pubs website. If you can
not find it, email me and I will send you a copy.

Re: OEM software electronic download report card

2007-05-11 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
RE: CA

CAESDR is ok, and the order process if fine. The biggest complaint I have with
software/maintenance downloads is that CA bundles CA-Common Services (CA-CCS
formerly CA-90s) in just about every product package. W H Y ??? It is
available as a separate download. If I download four service pack ESD tapes
for four different products, I get four copies of the same CA-Common Services
product stuffed into the download. Since CA-CCS is a large download (300 MB or
more, IIRC), it sometimes pushes me over the firewall/virus scanner limits for
download size.

And by the way, I have pursued various CA organizations, opened problem
tickets, and spoke to the CA service reps at SHARE to get Common Services
unbundled...to no avail

ASCB question

2007-05-10 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
I have a REXX program that scans through the ASCBs to collect information about
active STCs, JOBs, etc. It appears the address of a started task name is
located in the storage pointed to by the ASCBJBNS field. If ASCBJBNS is zero,
then I check to see if it is an initiated job by reading in ASCBJBNI field. I
guess since the OMVS subtask (such as INETD) are run under BPX initiators, they
are considered initiated jobs and the name of the task is in the ASCBJBNI
field.

The question is:
Does anyone know a way to tell if an initiated job is an OMVS task or a batch
job, programmatically? The ASCB doesn't seem to contain that information.

Thanks,

Ken,

You should only see the IXC102A message if fencing of the LPAR did not complete

If it was an error on the channel, you should at least have some sort of

From the timings it is possible that the system reset was started prior to the

Hi Ed, the following works on a z/9EC:

Double click CPC group from HMC, highlight the processor you want to work on,
then go into single object operations mode. Once there go CPC group again,
highlight the processor, and right click on the mouse and pick the channels
list item. You should be able the select the PCHIDs/CHPIDs you want and use
the Configure On/Off option under the CHPID Operations menu to toggle the
CHPID/PCHID ON/OFF from there.

Subject: Confused About Channel Path Reconfiguration from HMC

As a software developer, doing part time sysprog work, I will yield to the
expertise on this forum to set me straight on system programming matters.
Here's my latest puzzler:

z/OS V1.8 System Commands contains the following in the discussion of the
CONFIG CHP command:

IBM Documentation
Note that if you have systems running on a processor at the z990 level or
higher, you can automatically reconfigure channel paths on and offline using
the hardware management console (HMC) instead of issuing the CONFIG command.
On a z990, you may have multiple logical channel subsystems, which means that
if an ESCON card fails, you need to reconfigure 15 channels being used across
30 different partitions in each logical channel subsystem. Automatic CHPID
reconfiguration lets you issue a reconfiguration request centrally from HMC,
which in turn triggers the z/OS systems in each partition to issue the CONFIG
command.
Then only those partitions that cannot process the request or are not running
on a z990 level processor or higher need to be individually reconfigured with
the CONFIG command.
/IBM Documentation

This seems to imply that I can configure a CHP offline for the CEC (or maybe
for a CSS?) at the HMC and all of the attached LPARs will automatically take
action. Sounds great! The only problem is, I can't figure out how to do it on
my new z9BC HMC. Of course, it's always possible that I'm just thoroughly
confused about what's being described in the book.

On the HMC, under Operational Customization, I have Configure Channel Path
On/Off. When I drag the CEC to the icon, I get the following error:

Object is not an acceptable type of object for the task

I can drag CPC Images (or any group of Images) to the icon, and get a list of
the LPARs in the group. The instructions in the dialog box say, This task can
only be performed with a single target object. Indeed, only one LPAR may be
selected at a time.

So what am I missing? Where's the new functionality? How is a one-at-a-time, by
LPAR, request from the HMC better than a one-at-a-time, by LPAR, CONFIG
command? (How is it any better than RO *ALL,CF xxx across a sysplex?) Is there
something I need to enable in my IODF, IOCDS, HMC, or SE to make the
functionality worthwhile?

Any clarification will be very much appreciated.

Re: Confused About Channel Path Reconfiguration from HMC

2006-12-15 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
Ed,

The z/OS 1.6 CONFIG command documentation states that as well. However, both
the HMC 2.9.1 Operations and z/9EC SE Operations guides state that this does
not happen. I would continue to use CF ONLINE/OFFLINE

From HMC 2.9.1 Operations Guide

You can use the Hardware Management Console workplace to configure channel
paths on and off. However, operating systems will not be notified when you use
the workplace to configure channel paths on or off. For example, if you
configure off a channel path, the operating system running in any image that
owns or shared the channel path is not notified, and the next operation from
the operating system to the channel path causes an error. It is recommended you
use operating system facilities rather than the Hardware Management Console
workplace, whenever possible, to configure channel paths on and off.

From the z/9 SE Operations Guide:

You can use the support element workplace to configure channel paths on and
off. However, operating systems will not be notified when you use the workplace
to configure channel paths on or off. For example, if you configure off a
channel path, the operating system running in any image that owns or shares the
channel path is not notified, and the next operation from the operating system
to the channel path will cause an error. It is recommended you use operating
system facilities rather than the support element workplace, whenever possible,
to configure channel paths on and off.

Hope this clears things up.

Steve

JES2 Data Areas manuals z/OS 1.7 and 1.8

2006-11-03 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
Good afternoon everyone.

I am looking for the JES2 Data Area manuals for z/OS 1.7 or 1.8. Does anyone
know where I can find them or are they unchanged from the previous version of
the manuals? I've search library server and z/OS 1.7 Book Manager disks to no
avail. They don't appear in the list of JES2 publications in Appendix A of the
JES2 Introduction for z/OS 1.7 either.

Did you do SETPROG LPA or is your SYS1.LPALIB in the LINKLIST? If its in LPA
and you refreshed the LINKLIST, then it would appear the just cycling SMS
address space resolved you problem since the newly updated module would not be
found in the system search order.

Problem resolved.

After trying unsuccessfully to move data sets from these two volumes, we placed
a call to IBM. They recommended applying HIPER PTFS - UA09444, UA10497, and
UA12577. These update the LPALIB module IGDZILLA. After applying, the
LINKLIST was refreshed and SMS cycled with a FORCE SMS,ARM.
When SMS came back up, the problem volumes were available to SMS.

Re: Interesting Challenge

2006-09-22 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
CBRUXENT is the DFSMSrmm provided Cartridge Installation Exit. CA provides a
sample for CA-1. It is invoked for each tape that is inserted into the ATL.
In my situation, I had a systems managed ATL that we wanted to put other 3590s
in. The tapes were always rejected by the exit since they were not in the
Tape Management System. I had to change the exit to allow tapes that were not
defined in the CA-1 TMC to be entered into the ATL.

Glad to see everything worked out without all of the other hassle.

Re: Interesting Challenge

2006-09-20 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
Daniel,

You may have to alter the CBRUXENT Cartridge Installation Exit to allow foreign
tapes at your site as well. Also, if memory serves me, you also have to go to
the Unassigned Tapes and do an Insert then click Take Action to get it in
the ATL database. The Unassigned Tapes panel usually pops up when I do an
Insert Unlabelled Cartridge anyway.

The answer is:
Go to the operator console on the ATL, hit the Commands pull down.
Select Insert Unlabeled Cartridges, enter the VOLSER to be used in the
related cell slot for the
convenience door, and load the tapes in there in that order. Select OK and
away it goes. When it's done, cancel out.

  Gotta love this job!

Re: SHARE Baltimore

2006-04-14 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
Hi Sam,

I don't think this would help. Usually, the travel and lodging expenses are
much more than the conference costs and they require pre-approval as well. So,
the earlier I put in my request, the more likely I am to get budgeted for the
trip. Education budgets may or may not be dried up by mid-year.

Regards,
Steve

SNIP
This is just brainstorming not something that SHARE has officially
contemplated as far as I know but what if companies could purchase SHARE
credits/SHARE dollars at any time that could be spent within some time
period (1, 2, 3? years) similar to IBM education credits. Would that
solve the budget vs. conference registration cycle problem for you?

I don't know if this is even possible as there are legal and
administrative ramifications I am not competent to speak to but to me
the act of purchasing seats should not be limited to a brief period
immediately prior to each conference.

Pat,
We all appreciate the work that is done for such a major event, and I enjoyed
attending my first SHARE in Boston last year. As such, I would like to go to
the Baltimore SHARE this year. I simply feel more confident that I will have a
chance to go if I get the request in earlier, even if it is just a reasonable
cost estimate. I can also understand that some people will need the course
list before hand.

My apologizes if I offended you.

Steve

Jees. The project managers and their slaves (all with real lives and real
jobs outside of their SHARE volunteer work) have been busting parts of
their anatomy getting the session schedules finalized by deadline. Having
that schedule is a prereq for some people's justifying their attendance.
May seems pretty reasonable to me considering what goes on before hand.

Anybody else out there got a 3584 with a 3593-F04 connected to their

For some reason, when I EJECT a 3592 volume, then put it back in, the
CBRUXENT exit is not being driven. This means that DFSMS does not know
that the tape volume is back in the library. If I put in a new, never
before been INSERTed, volume, the CBRUXENT is driven.

I also noticed that if I remove a 3592 volume via the Web Interface,
the volser remains in the 3584's inventory. This may be why it is not
(or appears to not be) driving the CBRUXENT exit.

So far, I am not favorably impressed with the interface. But I will say
that the robot is nice and fast.

You probably need to check the image profile.

First double-click on the LPAR image from the CPC Images area. Make sure that
the activation profile is the same as the one you want to use.

If it is, then , close the window, select the image from the image screen, then
double-click customize/delete activation profiles. Select the image profile

defaulted to Load Address.

I don't discuss how many links should be used (IMHO two is OK), I'm
talking about single link definition: doeas it consume one or two chpid

Classic connection:

MVS -CHP10 CHP11-CF

CHP 10 is ICS, CHP 11 is ICR.

Now peer mode link, version A:

MVS -CHP11- CF

Is the above possible ?
Or, the only way is version B:

MVS -CHP10 CHP11-CF

which is the same as classic, with the exception both CHPs are defined
as ICP.

Re: Z/890 CTC - Is there still a jumper cable available ?

2005-10-04 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
There is a special black cable for the ICB-4 CF links. They connect to the
Jumper slots on the CPU books to Jumper slots on other CPU books on other CECs.
I haven't heard of any special black cable for CTCs though.

All

The 9672s use to have a special jumper cable for escon ctc. But I heard of a
special black cable built into the Z/890 .

Has anyone any knowledge of this special Black Cable , I am going down to
open box now...

Re: Creating IOCDS via HMC

2005-09-09 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
Mike,
Based on you previous posts, I gather that the IOCP question is related to
moving from BASIC to LPAR mode. Perhaps you can carve out a small LPAR that
you can use for SA IOCP. Only activate it when you need it and run SA IOCP
from there.

OK, now I am really getting confused. We are currently running in BASIC
mode. If I drag and drop the CPC ICON onto the Input/Output (I/O)
Configuration Task to access IOCP on the HMC, will it crash my running
system(z/OS running under VM)?

Yes. Adding an LPAR and then P-O-R will add the new LPAR to the Defined Images
screen.

Re: Creating IOCDS via HMC

2005-09-08 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
Mike,

You should be able to do it through HCD. Selection option 2 from the main
menu, the option 2 again to build the IOCDS. It should be able to access the
local CEC's service element to create the IOCDS. Also, you can add the SNA
address of the service element to the Processor definition (option 1 then
option 3 from the HCD main menu.) You should be able to update any CEC's IOCDS
in the shop if they are connected to the same HMC network (for lack of a
better term).

You should not have to bring down your LPARs to create an IOCDS!

Steve

All,

Can we (non-disruptively) create an IOCDS using the HMC without bringing
our running systems down? (we have z/OS running under VM and I am told
we have problems creating a IOCDS thru z/OS batch IOCP - we usually
drop z/OS and VM, then IPL z/OS natively and run batch IOCP). I would
like to create the IOCDS ahead of time.

Thanks in advance! Mike Martin

Re: Creating IOCDS via HMC

2005-09-08 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
I am saying I'm not quite sure why you would have to do a standalone IOCP. You
can use HCD or a batch job under z/OS.

What were you told was the problem of updating the IOCDS from z/OS under VM?
What does IBM say about that?

I'm not sure, but for future use, if you define an extra LPAR that is not
activated, you can activate it (but don't load it) and you might be able to use
standalone IOCP from that LPAR. Then deactivate it when you are done.

Don and Stephen,

Are you saying that Stand Alone IOCP isn't really stand alone? i.e.
It runs concurrently with everything else running (z/OS, LPARs active,
etc.)?

Re: How Was Share?

2005-08-30 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
The dumps are available from the TESTCASE ftp site until at least Sept 15. You
can get session 2895 presentation and get the instructions from page 4.

Instructions

ftp to testcase.boulder.ibm.com
login as anonymous (the password is your email address)
switch to mvs/fromibm directory
filenames are share.s2895.dumpn (where n is 1,2,3,4,5)
(the second qualifier is the session name so the other sessions are
probably the same format)
unterse the dumps.

The labs were great. There were a few corrections to the answers, so you may
want to trust you skills.

Steve

Don't bother getting a viewer Barry, the files are the same - content-wise.

Re: How Was Share?

2005-08-30 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
Barry,

I see the sessions under the Boston Proceedings (2000's), but only see
downloads for 2821, as you stated. I guess 2822 and 2823 are not available yet.

I got the instructions for download from the session 2895 handout (it happened
to be on the top of my share pile). After browsing through the handouts for
2895 and 2822, they seem to be the same lab with different dumps. That
probably explains why there is no 2895 dumps, but there are 2822. No 2x4
needed.

Steve

I know I'm website illiterate but this is really strange.

I went to the testcase site you mentioned and found (and downloaded) 5 dumps
for 2822 and 8 for 2823 but none for 2895.

I also went to the Share website but the only session that any presentation
material was 2821. 2822, 23, and 95 had none.

Please wrap any hints around 2x4 to insure making proper impression.

in performance for these utilities. I'd be interested to know if the utilities
got a perf boost.

I'm getting around to the CA-1 5.2 = 11 migration. We've always run with
the TMC unblocked (worked for us, ain't broke don't fix it, etc.) but
blocking it would help with the run time of some utilities and reports,
probably. Is anyone using CA-1 with a blocked TMC? Were there any snags or
issues to look out for?

We use a separate TMC for our test LPAR, so I can experiment if
necessary, but I thought I'd ask the experienced crew here before going
down that path.

Re: external tape to ATL

2005-06-09 Thread Bielskie, Stephen
Oh yes, the cartridge installation exit is call CBRUXENT.

-

You can find the steps in the 3494 Operator Guide (GA32-0449) on the IBM site.
Chapter 6 Insert unlabeled cartridges

Basically, select Insert Unlabeled Cartridge from the library manager menus,
then stick the cartridge in the corresponding spot of the I/O convenience
station. Make sure you put what would be the label side facing the inside of
the machine.
After that, a panel will be displayed for you to select Insert volume.

NOTE: I had to code the cartridge installation exit to enter 'foreign (not in
tape management system)' volumes into the ATL. I had to let one of the systems
accept the volume and assign it a storage group.
