Is it possible that when the dataset was created it did not have an Mgmtclas

To test it, create a similar file that will go through your ACS code the
same way.  Then go into ISMF and see if the mgmtclass is defined.

Esmie,

If you enter MCDEL1 into the VALUE column in the Entry Type line, you should
get the INVALID ENTRY TYPE error message on the panel.  If you want to limit
your listing by a particular management class, you would enter the MC name in
the VALUE column for the Management Class Name line, and EQ in the Rel Op

In any case, I experimented with requesting a list of data sets for a specific
management class (and we only have one at my shop) and it appears that, for
VSAM, only the cluster entry will include the MC information, for the DATA or
INDEX components, the column will be blank.

On the other hand, I do not have a DEFAULT management class defined, and yet
when I request ISMF produce a list of data sets, as above, with MC EQ DEFAULT,
I get a list of data sets.  It's as though ISMF considers a null value for the
MC as a match.  Sounds like a bug to me

Re: ISMF QUESTION

2011-08-31 Thread Gilbert C Cardenas
Esmoo, the dcollect output data can be browsed but it is fairly ugly. It also
puts out different record types that you need to distinguish from for
processing. You really need something like SAS or possibly SORT to reformat
the data into something legible if you want an ongoing report.
The dcollect would look something like this although there are multiple
parameters you can choose from:

//STEP03   EXEC  PGM=IDCAMS
//SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=*
//OUTDSDD DSN=DISK.DATASET.DCOLLECT(+1),
// UNIT=DISK,
// DSORG=PS,
// RECFM=VB,LRECL=932,
// SPACE=(1,(5,25000),RLSE),AVGREC=K,
// DISP=(NEW,CATLG,DELETE)
//BCDS DD DSN=DFHSM.BCDS,DISP=SHR
//MCDS DD DSN=DFHSM.MCDS,DISP=SHR
//SYSINDD  *
   DCOLLECT -
   OFILE(OUTDS) -
   ERRORLIMIT(1000)  -
   VOLUMES(*)

I use SAS to generate a report from dcollect data that contains the dsn,
creation date, lastrf date, lastbk date, expdt, volser, allocated and used
space as well as SMS classes if SMS managed.

Once you have the file you can edit the dataset, exclude all lines,

Since SMS class data is in the catalog, I would suspect that means you
need to generate your dataset list from catalog rather than from
VTOC. If any dsns are migrated, you also need to specify Y for
Acquire data if DFSMShsm migrated.

Any displayed DATA or INDEX components of VSAM datasets will show null
class values, as class values belong to the CLUSTER; so if your object
is to list allocated space associated with VSAM files (which is only on
DATA and INDEX) for a specific MGMTCLAS, you may not be able to do this
easily with ISMF.

Re: ISMF QUESTION - BROWSING CONSTRUCT OF A STORAGE GROUP

2011-07-08 Thread Darth Keller
 Is there a better way to browse the parms of the Construct of a STORAGE
GROUP instead of using the ALTER option when in ISMF? If I type
 DISPLAY in the Line Operator I receive error message COMMAND DISPLAY
NOT FOUND. The reason why I ask this question is that when I used the
 ALTER option it shows my USERID in the LAST MOD USERID LAST DATE
MODIFIED which erroneous.

Cancel out of the alter rather than just end.

Everything but the description is displayed when you use the LIST option
from the Storage Group Selection Panel.

The value in this data column represents the data
set name of each data set in the list. The
DATA SET NAME can be up to 44 characters long.
The data column can be 27 or 44 characters long.
If the list is in folded mode and the data set
name is longer than 27 characters, the extra
characters appear on a second line. Multi-volume
data sets contain one entry in the list for each

Could you cut and paste what you are seeing. The field in ISMF as far as I
know is the full dataset name.

You could be seeing it wrapped or extended.

Did you FOLD the panel?

I either see this (with FOLD)

   Can you show me where you found the explanation of blank for the

  Kees,
  The DFSMSdfp Storage Administration Reference (SC26-7402-05 for my
 current
  level 1.7) lists the possible values for each field within the
 construct,
  meaning of those values and indicates the default. I don't have a URL
 that
  I can point you to but maybe you can find the manual somewhere on
 IBM's
  website. I use a local bookmanager setup to access the documentation.
 I
  have never had to go to another product documentation such as DFSMShsm
  which is what the management class really pertains.

  John

 John,

 I read these chapters before, but after reading them again, I think I
 see what is meant: blank causes an internal default te be used, which is
 documented here. So, if I don't specify primary days non usage, the
 fields in the panels are left blank, but internally a value of 2 is
 substituted.

 Since no value is shown on the panels, I can't see there what will
 happen to the dataset, nor will the online help tell me and the text in
 sc26-7402 was not clear to me either when I searched it then. That
 caused the confusion.

 Thanks,
 Kees.
Kees,
When the days since last use meet or exceed the primary days non usage
value (default or otherwise) the dataset becomes eligible for migrating
from primary to ML1. There are attributes on the storage group which can
prevent any migration on the volume (Auto Migrate = N) or space utilization
on the volume is below the low threshold or you could have hsm processing
limited to a certain system/group (Migrate Sys/Sys Group Name) which is not
active or takes too long to get around to the volume where the eligible
dataset resides.
I think the documentation is worded that way because it is not guaranteed
that an aged dataset will migrate to ML1 or ML2 as soon as the number of
days criteria is met.
Regards,
John
p.s. I apologize for the fat fingers that sent the previous response well
before its time.

I've found that the Panel help is field sensitive ie. cursor-locate

default/blank values.

ps. z/OS v1.7 here if that makes a difference tho' I *think* it
functioned that way with v1.4 as well.

Re: ISMF Question

2007-11-22 Thread Lizette Koehler
Kees,

If you play around with this you could discover that a blank entry can
only be used in a very specific configuration. And I always do recommend
anyone with a question first start by playing with a construct (not the
production ones of course) and see what it does.

For example if you have COMMAND or BOTH specified for the Command or Auto
Migrate field, then you cannot use blank for Primary Days Non-usage or
Level 1 Days Non-usage

Same would be true if you specified

Admin or User command Backup
Auto Backup . . . . . . . . .

And then tried to use blank in the proceeding fields.

I think it would have been helpful if IBM had documented that in the Help
Panels, rather than a user needing to try to use blank and then get an
error message. I always did believe in more robust documentation in the
help panels for ISMF but IBM has not quite gotten around to that yet.

Conclusion, the blank entry is used in a very specific construct, one that
has very little control over it. You are not specifying any details to
ISMF. So it does nothing. There are no actions to take for a data set with
that type of construct for the management class.

So, no migrate, no automigrate, no backup, no gdg backups kept, etc.

This may allow the STORCLAS to control the file but the MGMTCLAS will not do
anything, from what I can remember.

Perhaps someone else will have a better explanation.

This is probably not what you need, but I just created a mgmtclass, and
went back in to list it, and saw all the values that it selected on my

Thanks,
