2003-08-20 Thread MALKIAT BENIPAL

There is a command in linux . I don't remember now. Pl. help me what is it.
Whenever we type a word after this command the whole screen will be cleared and then
the word will be printed on the whole screen containing ' * ' or ' # ' signs. eg. let
us assume :

banner malkiat

Now on the whole screen malkiat will be printed with ' * ' or ' # '. This command is
useful while logging as your user thus reminding you of your login user and can be
used in your .bashrc file of your user account.

thanks in advance,

[ilugd] GPL ?

2003-08-20 Thread Jasmeet S. Virdi
Hi,
I am not pretty sure I've understood the GPL license, Could some one
clarify some of my doubts :
1. If I create a new software which which is based (has the same code
base with some additions) on a GPL'ed software ( with open source) as a
part of it, so do I need to make my software too GPL'ed / open source ?
Do I have to reveal the source code JUST to the author of the original

2. How does the scenario in point one above change if my software has
the GPL'ed software one of the many features my software supports ? (In
this case too the code used is the same as for the GPL'ed software)
3. How does the scenaio in point one above change if only the concept or
the idea is from a GPL'ed software and the implimentation has be coded
from scratch by myself ?

This confusion is cos of a couple of things coming up :
. Tridia recently added a file transfer feature to the tradional VNC
amongst other things and they sell the licence for the pro version.
. Redhat has a load balancing solution that comes with the AS version
which is based on lvs and they charge for it.

Would someone be able to clarify ..

The GPL states that if you use even one line of GPL source code in
your program, you have to make the whole program proprietary. You are
only obliged to reveal the source to the people you give the binaries
of your program to -- not the original author, not any `community'.
However, you have to distribute the source under the GPL itself, so
the recipients are free to disseminate your source more widely if they
choose.

The GPL does not apply in situations where you, for instance, create a
module that interacts with a GPL software. Thus it's possible (if
deprecated) to have proprietary binary device driver modules within
the Linux kernel.

It's also possible to make proprietary software that runs over GPL
software. Packages like Oracle on Linux, which use the LGPL libraries
and run on a GPL kernel are an example. It's also possible to,
e.g. make a proprietary web interface for configuring GPL software.

Re point 3, I doubt if anyone would sue you for `look-and-feel' if you
made, e.g., a clone of Konqueror :)

Yes you can. However, once you have sold the package (and the source,
of course) to one person, s/he can further resell it, give it away, or
do whatever s/he pleases with it, so it's slightly difficult to make
more than one sale of a GPL package.

It depends on what enhancements they made and what the original

code base to enhance it, then yes, they must provide you with source
if you buy the binaries (if you do, pass on a copy here ;) OTOH if RH
only added extra functionality as a separate program on top of LVS, or
if LVS wasn't GPL in the first place, then RH is under no obligation

oh! ho!, depends on 1) which jurisdiction 2) how smart your lawyer is for
this one 3) if specific icons and graphic elements, drawn in the original,
with the source files, are released under gpl or any similar copyleft license.
4) how much cloned is clone. that's a tough one. we have precedent of several
cases where 'look and feel' cases have either lost, or won. the losers are
the too much look and too much feel. so the lawyers have to define 'too much'

yes for both! anybody anywhere anytime can get the sourcode free-of-cost, as
well as the object code. this is freedom.

and you can also charge whatever fee you like, if you wish to sell it to
someone, and someone wishes to pay for it, with or without your value added
services. this is also freedom.

bakes your noodle, doesn't it?

so to make things simpler, use the following terms to aid digestion;

free = free-of-cost = m u f t
free = freedom = m u k t

takes some time to *detoxify* yourself of the existing business models built
around proprietory knowledge paradigms.

free your mind of these, and the new business model will reveal itself to
you, like a pearl in an oyster.

which is how ibm and hp got the eureka moment and have started making

How is Red Hat proprietary? I can get sources to each package that I
install in RH 9, for instance. No clue about SuSE -- never used it.

I don't know if you read the article on the Gandhi chappie from Mumbai
who's one of the top ten spammers in the world. He's also an Indian
of note, but I wouldn't recommend anyone emulate him, or use his
services.
