2022-03-25 Thread Plantaholic Sheila.
For many years I have grown and loved Sarcococca.
In UK they grow very well.
I have several species as well as named cultivars... egconfusa,
hookeriana, humilis, ruscifolia, salignus,wallichii
Some have red berries some black.
What I have never succeeded in doing it knowing how to id them .
Which is why I said Sarcoccoca sp

Re: [efloraofindia:418037] Re: Shrub for ID from UCBG-GS23032022-1

2022-03-24 Thread Plantaholic Sheila.
Dear all,
I would love to help more but find this site really difficult to navigate
compared to any other.
I spend many hours a day on forums helping a little, to id plants for
others.
Every day is a school day and I learn.

Normally if there is a new thread with just one post you know the query
has yet to be answered.
On other forums ALL the pics are posted at the start of the thread.
When I posted my recent query here I put all my pics in one thread/one
post ...not 5 posts
It is so very frustrating that you cannot see all relevant detail together
in one place.
These forums don't allow for any additions or editing.

Here the norm on one thread is to see 6 posts . So I assume mystery plant
has been answered by others.
Only to find the previous 6 posts are images .one per post ..and
it has not been answered.
Or no answer but comments such as excellent image.

Here there is no way to see which threads I have commented on.
So for example if someone came along on this thread and said Sheila Ji you
are wrong it is not Buddleja... I would never know.
On other forums my avatar appears on any thread that I have posted answers.
I can check.
Fight my corner, give additional info as to why I still believe I am
correct.

Maybe it is because you take an interest in how many posts someone
makes...so the more single pics posts per thread the more points are
acquired.
It is not a competition to score points!
Quality is far better than quantity!
Sorry if I have offended you.
Sheila.

in UK there are many named cultivars.
eg...Mahonia × media 'Charity

It gets rather technical telling one from another.

Re: [efloraofindia:416801] MYSTERY SHRUB 23rd Feb 2022...SS

2022-03-09 Thread Plantaholic Sheila.
Please see my entry for February 24th.

I have worked very hard to try and id this myself. ..but I am not a
botanist, just a keen amateur.
I loved those green square stems so interesting

To me the globose /spherical heads of flowers on stalks remind me of a 3
shrubs/trees.
Button bush ..Cephalanthus.. ..in
Rubiaceae...however leaves always seem to be opposite.
Paper mulberry.Broussonetia..in
Moraceae.leaves are alternate.
London Plane tree ...Platanus x hispanicain in Platanaceae..I
discounted these as they are just North hemisphere.

Broussonetia so far seems to be leading in the right direction.
In i naturalist I found Broussonetia kazinoki...in Ecuador. But there is
very little on www about it.
https://ecuador.inaturalist.org/taxa/470727-Broussonetia-kazinoki
Someone in the world will surely recognise my mystery shrub/tree

2022-03-05 Thread Plantaholic Sheila.
Thank you for taking the time to look at my mystery shrub, and for your
suggestion.
I do not believe that *Leonotis nepetifolia* it the answer.
It is a plant that I am familiar with.
The flowers of which form in a circle surrounding the stem.
http://www.flowersofindia.net/catalog/slides/Lion%27s%20Ear.html

My pics show the developing seed head on a stalk. , pendulous from the
square stem.
It was more woody, tree like than a herbaceous plant.

Re: [efloraofindia:415894] MYSTERY SHRUB 23rd Feb 2022...SS

2022-02-24 Thread Plantaholic Sheila.

Thank you for your thoughts Mr Garg.
However, I do not believe it is Lamiaceae .

I have also seen it growing superbly in the wild near Darjeeling
which gets rather cold

All my plant pics..64,000 are on Flickr and are all labelled with latin

I agree.
These are the unopened flowers of Edgeworthia chrysantha.
One of my very favourite winter flowering shrubs.
Please see my pic library.

The bark used to be used to make very high class paper.

Hope this helps.

Yes..it is another Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki'.

Holly has alternate leaves.
Osmanthus has opposite leaves.

Now you will be able to tell one from the other.

I am so sorry...I tried to add all my pics but it hasn't worked.
Nor could I type anything in.
I am finding this site very hard to use.

Ushadi...this small tree was growing in the grounds near our hotel...on
the North east coast of Mauritius.
It caught my eye .
There were other interesting shrubs/trees in the same area.
I have full selection from leaves to pods etc...but for some reason they do
not seem to be showing.

When I have finished editing , naming my 2400 plant pics I will add them to
Flickr under my name of Plantaholic Sheila...there I have a library of over
63,000..labelled with full Latin name where possible.

I also posted a question on University of British Columbia...Vancouver

amidst landscaped gardens and lush forests, this hill resort in Sikkim is a
mere 30 minute drive away from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. This nature
resort in Sikkim blends traditional architecture and interior design with
modern amenities. A strict vigil is kept on preserving and conserving the
environment.

The eco –friendly resort around Gangtok is spread out over six and a half
acres of natural beauty.

The cuisine is traditional Sikkimese prepared with produce from the
Resort’s organically grown kitchen garden. The garden has special area of
Medicinal Plants and Herbs. Dairy, poultry and fresh meat products are also
provided from the Resort’s farm. You can also pick vegetables of your
choice and have them prepared for food. ...

In the grounds they had several poly tunnels where they were growing fresh
vegetables for the guests.
On the edge of this cleared, cultivated area were several huge trees and
paths going into other parts of the grounds, that sadly we did not have
time to explore.I assumed they lead into the original, uncleared forest.

However, I do not know which are native trees in the area and which are
planted introductions.

I was just enjoying a holiday... but I was also fascination and
interest by all the wonderful new trees and shrubs, that I have never seen
before.

So my assumption that it was growing wild could be completely erroneous.
Sorry if I was misleading.

We locally call the tree 'KABRA'. The leaf-buds are collected and pickled

The plant is possibly planted or cared for as almost all *Ficus *species
 are used as fodder.
 Hope this helps,

Following my thrilling id of Lecesteria stipulata, last night, I found a
pic of the berries on www. for it.
Sadly I cannot add the link as it must be a private image.

But I did notice that the berries in pic had a sort of coronet on the end.

Just like the berries here!
So I set to and did a bit more research.
I now believe I have another Leycesteria Leycesteria gracilis.
eflora mentions the lack of stipules. With berries that are red turning

Coincidentally the 2nd link has a botanical drawing... which shares the

Hi Vijayasankar,
Many thanks for your confirmation and kind words. Also the link.
Whoopee!!! I am so thrilled.

On several other forums I try to help others with plant id and realised
the importance of looking!

Now I want to try to add my pics to Wikipedia so that in the future anyone
searching for these 2 Leycesteria can see a few images.
No idea yet how to do it!

Many thanks once again to everyone here for all your patience and help.

Warm wishes

Hi everyone,
On our magical 3 week trip to Sikkim and West Bengal on March 2011, this
shrub has stayed in my memory.
It was along side the road to Tiger Hill near Ghoom, ( not far from
Darjeeling.)which many hundreds of tourists visit every day to watch the
sun rise over the Himalayas.
There were lots of these shrubs... so very common ... or so I thought.
I took more pic of this one shrub than any other, to try and capture as
much detail as possible.

I thought it would be so very easy to id.

I have even sent a letter ( snail mail!) to the Lloyd Botanic garden in
Darjeeling with photos, but sadly did not receive a reply.
( I would normally put a stamped addressed envelope with my letter for a
reply. But this does not work in foreign countries.)

Somone on this learned forum must live near here/ visit here.
I have often wondered what the berries are like, what colour they will be.

Your help is requested.
Thank you for looking.
Warmest wishes.
Sheila.

Many thanks M.K.Pathak for the suggestion of Leycesteria glaucophylla.
However, I have found it on eflora china where it says Berry yellow-green

http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2taxon_id=242423833

So sadly I feel this still remains unsolved.

I would like to thank you all for the research and help you have given me
for trying to id this plant.

Thank you J.M. Garg for bumping this to the top for further help from
everyone.

Special thanks to Prashant for the suggestion of Litsea.

Also Jui for the suggestion of Casearia and Xylosma.

Also Surajit for the suggestion of Litsea monopetala... and Xylosma. and
for taking so much trouble in giving me links for these

I have tried to look on www for further help.
But am unable to find any image for Litsea monopetala, that match the
leathery leaf, with the curved veins (sort of in loops), small petalled
flowers on very short stalks directly from the branches, which bear both
buds and flowers together. etc. etc

http://www.hkwildlife.net/viewthread.php?tid=40623

I believe that Xylosma can be ruled out as it has fruits that are small
purple/black berries.

So inspite of all your generous help I still feel that this is unresolved.

 Garg Sir,

The probability of a Myrtaceae member also occurred to me and i searched a
 lot on *Syzigium* too!

Specially because the 4th image (041 13-04-2011 17-46-30.jpg) gives hint
of hermaphrodite flowers and the 5th image (041 13-04-2011 17-46-54.jpg)
clearly shows sub-marginal venation. On the other hand *Litsea* is
 a dioecious plant.

Fruits (041 13-04-2011 17-45-42.jpg) are more like *Michelia champaca*, a
Magnoliaceae member. But, i think, this plant in question cannot be a
 Magnoliaceae!

Neither would i go for Myrtaceae, fruits are different and i think almost
all flowers and fruits bear pedicel.

So, only chance left to me is to vote for *Xylosoma* sp.

 Thank you Regards,

Thank you so much JM.Garg for bumping my post to the top.
Love the new site!

I have received an e mail in reply...

It is Leycesteria formosa of Caprifoliaceae. It is very common in Neora
Velley National Park, may be around Aluabari and upto Jopokhri at the top.
PROF. A. P. DAS
 Thanks, Prof. Das.

For which I would like to thank Prof Das.
However... Leycestria formosana is a very common shrub in UK. I have never
seen it without the bigpuple coloured bracts that come with the flowers and
remain on the plant with the berries.

Does it do something very different in Nepal?

Help experts.
Warmest wishes from UK to you all.

Greetings from Britain to you all.
Thank you for your amusing stories and pics.
Good to see what you look like Pankaj!

Usha my wee digital camera goes with me to all the wonderful gardens
we visit in Britain. The climate here means we can grow plants from all
over the world. Except hot tropical ones!

I am learning all the time and love to find plants that I have not
seen before.
I now have a very extensive picture library, (many taken in our own
garden) As well as wild flowers in the hedgerows.
I try to get a record of the leaves ,flowers , seeds and any other
interesting features through the changing seasons. I am fascinated by
the shape of leaves.
All pics are labelled with full latin name, and are a terrific aide
memoir when I try to help others on other forums to id their plants.
( It has become an addiction!)
I love it when a forum has experts and amateurs, such as myself, from
all over the world, prepared to help others id a plant.
The internet is just AMAZING!

I am afraid I completely missed the last 4 posts.

Next question... Why?
I started by asking for e mail notifications. But my in box was
completely flooded with 100's of posts . So I opted out.
Now, I seem to be missing replies to my own threads.

How can this be sorted? Help reqested yet again.
I never have any problems on any other forum... just this one!
Sheila.
