Re: [IRCA] KNZR 1560 Thanksgiving stunting

2019-11-28 Thread Joseph Miller
Thanks Mike. KNZR is the usual occupancy here on 1560, but tonight I am
hearing two stations and it it's hard to copy either.

P.S. I remember when 1560 was WQXR New York City and they played classical
music. Ok, I am dating myself...

[IRCA] From the ARRL Letter

2019-04-25 Thread Joseph Miller
*Technology:* FCC Asked to Allow All Digital Transmissions on AM Band

According to *Radio World*
,
a prominent advocate for the Standard Broadcast Band (AM band) has
petitioned the FCC to allow stations to use all-digital transmissions in
the US. In March, Bryan Broadcasting Corporation asked the Commission to
initiate a proceeding to authorize the MA3 primary all-digital service mode
for any AM station that chooses to do so. Bryan is the licensee of four AM
and five FM stations (and six FM translators) in central Texas.

All HD Radio receivers in the market that have AM functionality would be
able to receive such all-digital signals, the article explains, but legacy
AM receivers would not.

Since last summer, WWFD in Frederick, Maryland, has had special temporary
authority to broadcast in all-digital. The Bryan petition appears to be the
first to seek all-digital authority. The petition said the broadcast
industry's experimentation with an all-digital approach "could be
accelerated by actually allowing stations to fully switch to MA3; actual
experiential knowledge by stations that elect to switch will provide
economic proof-of-concept for stations that delay in order to see how
others fare."

The petition also noted discussions that the AM band has "become so
overwhelmed by interference and impulse noise that the resultant audio
product is rendered unacceptable to modern listeners." The petition said
the noise floor generated by unlicensed devices and affecting the AM band
"has been noticeable -- and increasing -- for years." According to the
petition, Bryan has tried to quantify the noise floor increase, but that
studies have not been undertaken in the US. The petition said experience in
other countries suggests a rise from anywhere between 10 dB and 40 dB
between the 1970s and the early 2000s."

[IRCA] 1080 kHz question

2019-03-30 Thread Joseph Miller
Hello,

I am going through my old logs and entering them into an Excel worksheet
particularly finning in missing or incorrect information.

My records show that on May 17, 2007 WITC in Hartford went off the air from
11:00 PM to 5:00 AM presumably for maintenance. I managed to log three
stations:

1) Mike Mathews in Timeless Classics, heard music by the Tremeloes, Dean
Martin, Fats Domino, Hamilton Joe Frank and Reynolds, Peggy Lee, Sam Cooke,
Johnny Mathis. Also an ad for Menards which would narrow it down to the
northern midwestern states.

2) Radio Cadenas, Cuba, heard an ID

3) Unid. Soul music (probably bumper music) Rollye James, Financial
reports. I did a web search and saw she had a show at one time, but not
sure if ever syndicated.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Bill,

Six/seven weeks out from winter solstice and thankfully it gets dark a
little later everyday. Tonight I tuned them at 05:55 PM local time and even
though there is a delay of several seconds, their radio signal is // to
their web site at: http://www.inpi.gob.mx/ecosgobmx/xeqin.php

Just heard "estes es equis e cue I, enne La Voz de Valle".

The announcements frequently mention Baja California and alternate between
a man's and a woman's voice in between local music.

Happy to put this one in the log!!!

Thanks again and giud DX

[IRCA] Station ID help requested

2019-02-14 Thread Joseph Miller
Good evening,

At about 6:00 local time (0200 Zulu) I heard some Spanish on 1160
occasionally overpowering KSL in Utah. Program content was a mix of talk
and more traditional music. At 02:26 I heard instrumentals of "Hey Jude"
and "Unchained Melody", the first being played on flute.

Unfortunately for me, I had no internet access while I could hear them. We
had a lot of rain in the past 24 hours and didn't even have cell phone
service. Then an hour later, the internet returned, but no longer heard
them.

I looked up XEQIN 1160 with a web browser and it took me to live feed of
their program. Content is similar, but did not hear the "La Valle" ID
though.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Thanks Neil, That's what I thought. I don't usually hear them in the
evening, but late at night, they really are strong.

[IRCA] KDYL 1060

2019-01-27 Thread Joseph Miller
Had one of those nights when I woke up at about 2:30 am.

On 1060 I was hearing Spanish music and talk with an unusually load and
clear signal. At the top of the hour, I heard "this is KDYL South Logan
Utah" and back to more music.

The AM Radio Log shows their format as Chinese Radio Intl. In a rare
moment, I checked Wikipedia and they reported the station changed it's
format to Radio Unica effective January.

Why their signal sounded so good on 66 nighttime watts

This brings back pleasant memories...

Hearing on 650 ABC News at the start of the hour, a fade, some country
music, another fade. First thought was KSTI Rancho Cordova, but they are
Westwood One, but the country music makes it KMTI.

It's been almost 12 years since they had their DX test, and I heard them in

A while ago, a group of us made the same observation about 2 meter
repeaters. The gee whiz technology of the 1960's and those who know how to
service these machines are now in their 80's and unable to climb towers any

Re: [IRCA] propagation article

Well, yeah, that was new term for me as well. I did a web search and found
an interesting article by Bob Brown NM7M PhD UC Berkeley (
http://www.astrosurf.com/luxorion/qsl-hf-tutorial-nm7m5.htm ) and I found a
short explanation about halfway down the page. Maybe I can read the entire
article.

Last winter, while still living in S.E. Michigan, I may have experienced
this phenomenon when in just one evening session, I logged 7 NDBs from
Nunavut (6 of which I had never heard before).

Here's hoping this will shed some light on things.

Lexington. Clear signal for a few minutes although the noise is getting
louder. (Miller)

Re: [IRCA] 2010 Field Day

2010-06-21 Thread Joseph Miller, KJ8O
Hi Bert,

Thanks for asking, I have been asked (again) to act as our Field Day Chairman,
and we are working on much bigger activities than the last year or two. We
will be operating from the Oakland County ARPSC (W8OAK) as a 2F. New for us
this year will be GOTA station K8G which we will be operating from a Flea
Market on Sunday Morning from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. We are also going after every
single extra point that is available (media, elected officials, served
agencies, NTS traffic, public display, etc.).

We can send out up to ten NTS messages at 10 points each, and Bert will be
getting one already. If any one else would like to receive a message through
NTS, please respond to me privately and I'll add you to the list. Four are
assigned already, so six are up for grabs.

This is my fourth year at it, and I wouldn't miss it for anything.

Sorry for the somewhat off-topic post, but had a good FM E-skip
opening this evening into New Mexico. It was neat to hear several of
the stations we saw on the Citadel tour at the IRCA convention last
year. One was a new catch, so have now heard 6 of their 7 Albuquerque
stations (both AM and FM). KRST 92.3 had the best signal of the bunch,
in pretty solidly for an hour or so.

Re: [IRCA] What a treasury! Re Little Egypt

2010-05-27 Thread Joseph Miller
Hi John

Re: It was like going down to Egypt. Cairo, where the Ohio and Mississippi
Rivers met, was expected to be one of the greatest American cities, and several
other little towns in Southern Illinois were named after Egyptian cities --
such as Karnak and Thebes.

I saw a program on the History Channel about 6-8 months ago where they
mentioned Little Egypt. Had to deal with early explorers if I remember
correctly.

But getting back to the White's Radio Logs, I bought my first one in 1968.
There was a drugstore about a half mile from my high school and I'd walk over
there on my lunch hour to purchase the latest copy. Rather interesting, they
are exactly as I remember. I even submitted a station change once and was
listed in one of their magazines, though sadly, not one of the ones listed on
the website. Also interesting was to see some of the names of people that I
currently know

Re: [IRCA] Germany 756

2010-02-16 Thread Joseph Miller
I have listened to Deutschlandfunk on the web or on sghortwave on few
occasions. There are actually two audio streams available, and I'm assuming
both are broadcast over the air.

First is Deutschlandfunk which as Bill points states does have some news
content, but also as Marc states, frequently has music. I don't listen to this
one very often.

The other is Deutschlandfunk Kultura (Culture) which carries short news reports
(typically 5 minutes) with the rest of the hours filled up with either popular,
jazz, or classical music. All announcements are in German, but the songs can
sung be in any language, and even if your German isn't that good (like YT), the
music can be fun to listen to. Lastly, this station does use Deutschlandfunk
Kultura so it should be fairly easy to ID either station.

Just my 2 cents...

Heh, Heh, Heh!

Yesterday I got a GREAT early Christmas present from Vietnam! I had

reported 675 kHz - VOV1 at least three times from our Orcas Island,

Washington home over the years and received no reply at all. Last

winter, I finally did what I should have done MUCH sooner: Ask

Patrick Martin what to do! He had sent a report at the same time as

my first one and HE got a QSL (of course!) He said that he reported

675 and a parallel shortwave outlet and got an answer. He thought

that reporting shortwave was the key.

Well, I waited patiently until 675 was coming in well on Orcas Is.

this fall and then I began to search for an audible SW parallel. That

proved more difficult than I expected, but I finally got a morning

where 675, 5975 and 7210 were all coming in, with 675 being the best

signal. All were //.

So, then I wrote the best report that I knew how, sent them a CD of

the entire reception mostly from 675... and included several post

cards from my home islands, some US station stickers and $2.00. I

got back a VOV sticker, a little doll/key chain of a Vietnamese woman

in traditional clothing (now on the Christmas tree) and the following

letter on plain paper:

Dear Mr. Bryant

We have checked your CD and realize that it is Voice of Vietnam,

Channel One, which features news and current affairs. After listening

to the content, we admire your devotion to radio broadcasting.

However, we can just send you a reply letter, a frequency list and a

souvenir but not a verification card because the program you heard

was from the domestic service. Thank you very much for listening and

we hope to get some feedback from you about our English service.

Sincerely yours,

English Service

Voice of Vietnam

Am I going to count the above as a QSL for 675 - Voice of Vietnam???

Was Ronald Reagan a Republican???

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and Happy 2010 to each of you and

yours. My Christmas is already memorable!

I am rapidly becoming the poster boy for the Great Senior Moment-ism Movement.

My problem with the missing photo album turns out to be the fact that some time
ago I consolidated photos from a couple of albums into one thick album ... and
my memory told me the photos were still in the older album, different color
from the current one. It was on the shelf in the radio room where I put it when
I got back from Albuquerque.

I think I'll buy a new album with red covers to match my face.

Thanks to all who commiserated on my perceived loss.

Qal R. Mann, Krumudgeon

Jim has asked me to let the DX community know that he's laid up for a

while after a car accident Wednesday night near his home.

The good news is that Jim is expected to make a full recovery after

suffering injuries to several of his vertebrae. There was no spinal-cord

damage, thankfully.

The bad news is that the recovery will take a while, and for the next

two to three months he'll be confined to home and wearing a halo device

around his neck to keep those vertebrae in place while they mend.

(Yes, the jokes have already been made about finding a way to turn the

halo into an active loop so he can DX MW with it...)

I talked to Jim a short time ago, and he's in good spirits. He's able to

read e-mail, but it's a little more complicated for him to get the

keyboard into the right position to send any e-mails, which is why

you're all hearing from me instead of him.

Please pass this along to other DX lists as you see fit - and as I know

more about Jim's recovery, I'll pass it along as well.

[IRCA] Chris Johnson

2009-10-27 Thread Joseph Miller

I saw the sad news on qrz.com which I followed up with a phone call to our
common friend, that Chris Johnson K2FO (ex K4NHL ex WB2RJL) of Taylors SC
passed away in the morning of Sunday, September 20, 2009 of a heart attack.

My favorite memory of Chris was our hour long phone calls talking about various
subjects as Dr. Knowledge on KDKA, DXing, ham radio, and you name the subject.

Go in peace with our Lord, Chris, you will be missed.

Hi Paul, I have access to old call sign information, and it was K4NHL. He

[IRCA] New logging on 1370

2009-10-26 Thread Joseph Miller
On the way home from work tonight, I heard a very different station on 1370.

Sounded like several mentions of urban talk including sports, news, and some
religion, and a station ID that was a little difficult to copy but sounded like
WDIC. Then they ran an ad for a concert at the Bojangles Coliseum. Did my web
search, and discovered said building is in Charlotte North Carolina. Thus I was
able to pinpoint the following:

WGIV, 1370, Pineville, NC, 26 Oct 2009, 2300 (UTC or 7:00 pm local), with a
fair but copyable signal and no sign of WSPD or WXXI. Quite sure this new.
Logbooks are on the other computer.

P.S. Rob, do you have this in your ULR log???

[IRCA] new logging on 1370

2009-10-22 Thread Joseph Miller

First, I tried again to pull in WXXI, and at 6:29 pm local time (Wednesday Oct.
21) I heard news that had that NPR feel to it, with thanks to several sponsors,
the name Renee Montagne (spelling???), and finally the WXXI station ID right
at 6:30. Not new, but infrequent, and first time at sunset.

This morning at 8:00 am, while the car radio was still on the same frequency, I
heard some talk radio, and at TOH was station ID WGOH. Turns out, they are a
5KW daytime station in Grayson KY, with a bearing of 176.9° and distance of 300
miles (approx). I'll have to check my logbook, but I'm quite sure this is new.

Lastly, someone is running a mystery station, as I have heard some popular
music, so I'll go back again tonight, and try again.

I will run the 160 meter amateur radio beacon this evening, 21 October our time
(22 Oct UTC). I plan two segments, one starting before and running past local
sunset from 0105UT to 0135UT, and one from 0550 to 0615UT.

This will be on 1998.5 kHz and comprise a repeated CW identifier of my amateur
callsign VE7DXR.

We didn't have much success with it last night, but tonight, Martin Hall in
Scotland is bearing down on it with a Beverage, so I'm crossing my fingers.

A bit of ULR Bedtime DX Last night netted what I hope are 2 New
Stations. One of these I'm not sure about due to Conflicting Data I have
seen on the Web. The Station in question is...

640 WMFN Zeeland, MICHIGAN

Half of what I read says they are SPANISH...Mexican Brokeredbut I'm
also seeing info suggesting they are Smooth Vibes.Urban Cool Jazz
Format.

Is there anyone CLOSE enough to Zeeland to Confirm for sure just what
Birach Broadcasting is doing over there

Response: Hi Robert, you are right, there is a lot of outdated info on the
internet,
including Birach Broadcasting's own website. With Wikipedia, you have to
carefully
check their sources, but their information appears to be the most up-to-date,
as it
explains the contract with Tyrone Bynum coming to an end, and the ensuing
format change taking place in November 2008.

Wiki's article is at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WMFN

That is about the best I can do right now, as they are received best in the
early
morning from my home, and it's been a while since last hearing them.

Here's my latest thought on the matter:

Perhaps the way to go here is to simply start eliminating 1310s that we

*know* aren't our mystery station. We've ruled out WTLC-IN, WEMG-NJ and

WORC-MA so far. I'm quite certain that my local WRSB-NY isn't it (though

I'll check again when I get home tomorrow), and I'll be within range of

Dearborn MI and Alliance OH on the way home today in order to rule those

out as well, though I'm quite certain neither one is it.

What else can we eliminate for certain?

Re: [IRCA] When that antenna support just isn't high enough

2009-06-20 Thread Joseph Miller
Yah, the Luso crank-up tower shown at Dayton came with a pretty hefty price tag.

This antenna base is triangual shaped, about 7 feet each side, each part is 30
feet, fully extended to 150, 4300 horsepower motor running 220 volts.

Never did hear a frim price, but was rumored at abougt $43,000, coax and

I have an off topic question (though it may be useful for DX'ers who
want their PVC loop frames to have some color to them). Have you done
much painting on PVC pipe?

According to http://www.pvcworkshop.com/painting.htm the recommended way is to
get some of the PVC cleaner to remove the markings before painting, although
priming could be done but as they say it adds a step. The Krylon paint is best
and the article even shows how to do it.

You certainly piqued my interest in this subject as I have made some small loop
antennas from PVC in the past, but would like to go for neutral colors for
those to be left outside. Probably my favorite (for shortwave listening) is the
100' (30 meters) loop which is very directional and gives me about 6-7 db of
gain.

Good luck on your endeavors.

That's correct. The station is located in Saarlouis (kind of near where the

Re: [IRCA] To Les-- (Semi-Monthly QSL Rant)

2007-04-12 Thread Joseph Miller
To Les, Paul, and the group

RE: B. If we insist that stations handle the QSL's, especially for major
tests like the ones in Montana or Utah, then you'll have very few tests.
Stations simply don't have the resources that they once did. Offering to
handle QSL chores make it easier to get tests, period.

RE: If folks don't think that the NRC/IRCA Broadcast Test Coordinator
cards are valid then don't send in reception reports. No harm, no
foul. The club(s) have both decided that we're going to offer the
service to stations...if they accept then both the station and the
clubs consider these verifications as official.

It's too bad that some DXers can not or will not 'accept' these QSLs. We had
a discussion going a few months ago about whether QSLs issued by a third
party are 'legal'. And our answer was that as long as they are authorized by
station management (such as the case with DX tests) then, yep, they are
legal. Another point to be added: Les very clearly signs his name, title,
and amateur radio call sign to each verification, so no one can argue that
there is any intent to deceive.

I, for one, am very grateful to both Les and Paul for performing this
service, and I quite proudly display these QSLs along with the ones I get
from directly from the stations.

You and the IRCA list are the best reason there is for a large

America. What's distant and hard to hear for some of us is local and easy to
hear for others. I appreciate being able to get second opinions, especially

Keep up the good work, I appreciate all of you!!!

Re: I live in Kansas City, and I just checked 1660 on the way to the store.
They IDed several times as Classical 1660 KXTR, just as they did until the
brief change earlier this year. Good to hear the old calls back.

You've probably already seen reports from others here on the list
about KXTR changing to WDAF, then changing back soon after. I
remember hearing them ID as WDAF
when I last checked back in February, and indeed the WDAF logo was on
their web page for awhile. Was reported on amlogbook.com as well.

Someone sure did a great job of getting everyone all mixed up. Thank you for

[IRCA] Kansas logging

2007-04-08 Thread Joseph Miller
Hi Group Happy Easter

On 1660 kHz, for the last week or so, I have been hearing classical music,
which according to the NRC Radio Directory, can only be KXTR in Kansas City,
KS. This is relatively weak signal that tends to drift in and out, and I am
inside a circle of stations from North Dakota, Kansas, Kalamazoo Michigan,
Puerto Rico, New Jersey, and North Carolina. Obviously, I need a directional
loop antenna to sort them out.

Earlier attempts to confirm reception have been just as frustrating. Dialing
the station's phone number late at night connects me with an automated
attendant and no option to get to the on-air (if any) staff. Their website
has a listen now feature that doesn't work. Lastly, their website has a
did you like what heard? feature that only works for morning broadcasts,
but nothing for late at night.

The good news: I did get in a nice audio recording where their signal peaked
for about a half minute. Hopefully the station will be kind enough to answer
a letter with this audio enclosed.

I know, a lot of trouble to go through, but I am quite proud to say Kansas
#2 after hearing KKOW 860 for the first time last fall.

[IRCA] Late night loggings

All heard in Troy MI using a Sony ICF-2010 with loop antenna:

WGRB 1390 Chicago IL, 3/31/07, 10:58-11:00 PM EDT. Urban gospel music, TOH
ID of WGRD Chicago mixed in with others but no sign of usual WNIO. Nice to
hear Chicago at less than 50 kw! MW#392; IL#13; 1390#3.

WMBD 1470 Peoria IL, 3/31/07, 11:20-11:30 PM EDT. End of NCAA semi-final
basketball game, national ads, post game talk, local ads with several
mentions of Peoria, then a deep man's voice with WMBD. Almost armchair
quality signal on this one for 5 kw out of Central Illinois. MW#393; IL#14;
1470#3.

WFNA 1660 Charlotte NC, 4/1/07, 12:05 AM EDT. NCAA basketball talk on ESPN
Radio. Normally, I hear WQSN Kalamazoo Michigan for ESPN radio on 1660, but
there call sign ID was as plain as day WFNA. Also hearing some classical
music, and New Jersey appears to be in the mix as well. MW#394; NC#8,
1660#3.

Note, it occurred to me that the classical music on 1660 was very likely
Kansas City, KS, but further listening did not provide a call sign.

When travelling I-25 near Johnson's Corner I can hear a nearby 400 kHz
beacon on 800 kHz as I drive past. It was loud enough to overpower
semi-local KLDC when they were still on 800 kHz. This only happened on
the radio in my 96 Ford Bronco and did not happen on the radio in my 85
Corvette.

When I visited the Gillette WY Loran station I could clearly hear the
540,000 watt 100 kHz transmitter on several harmonic frequencies over a
considerable distance. On 700 kHz I could hear it clearly over 12 miles
away. This was again on my 96 Ford Bronco radio.

These were both direct harmonic multiples of the primary frequency and
did not have any noticeable effect from the IF frequency in my receiver.
However, in some cases the IF frequency or other nearby transmitters can
also effect the results. For example, a radio with a 455 kHz IF
frequency might translate a 382 or 383 kHz beacon to 1220 kHz (1220
minus 455 divided by 2 equals 382.5 kHz).

that they publish their new policy. It will likely be several months before
stations actually get legal Approval to use IBOC at night.

Looking at some recent FCC actions, the announcement to end Morse Code
requirements for amateur radio operators was made on December 15, 2006. New
regulations must first appear in the Federal Register, and then go into
effect 30 days after publishing. In this case, the new regulations did not
become effective until February 23, 2007.

As for the IBOC regs, I would give them somewhere around 60 days or perhaps
May 20th. This is strictly a guesstimate on my part though.

Charlie,

As I wrote Colin earlier that Canada is no way a mouse. Not at all.
Canada deserves the care and respect we should give all people. Canada
has always been a very good friend of ours. If Australian stations have
turned off their DRM tests because of QRM to New Zealand stations, we
should in turn do the same thing with interference to our Canadian
Mexican friends.

Patrick
