Re: [IRCA] CommRadio CR-1
There's a very lengthy thread about this radio at radioreference.com/ under SDRs. They worked very hard to get the bugs out, so just about everything is as it should be. There will be free software upgrades. If you sign up for the newsletter today, you might get a coupon Monday for free battery free shipping. He said to me in an e-mail we are having a special but I didn't notice it on the site, so I *hope* it is for all. commradio.com is the website. Don said the coupon is good until May 6th. Even if you don't get a coupon it's $150 cheaper now than in June Don will likely advertise the radio in QST. Don is selling them on eBay through Universal Radio. I've been in contact with Don, I wrote him couple mos ago requesting LW a filter narrower than 1 kHz, so it has the 500 HZ filter LW now (but no preselector for LW). A truly portable mini-communications receiver with 7 selectivities, only 1.75lbs, internal battery is rechargable hundreds of times. Imagine taking this radio to a place with no noise, setting up antenna, selecting 500Hz DSP IF filter LSB or USB and tuning in 10 Hz steps for traces of some very weak distant stations (TAs, TPs). The MW sensitivity is not reduced compared to HF/SW, minimum discernible signal -125 dBm. I can't imagine anyone wanting to return it, but there is a 30 day return privilege, less shipping. Also nice it has FM BCB, NOAA weather, 2m 440 MHz ham bands, though less sensitive -95dBm on VHF/UHF. It should be lots of fun I'm sure many will be sharing their experiences. If anyone wants to call the owner Don Moore 1-303-279-3671, he's a great guy will answer if he's there also answers e-mails. He said he would also supply me with 2 BNC to PL-259 adapters a pigtail, so I'll have no problem connecting my Quantum loops. It's for sale to buyers outside US beginning 5/1 likely price increase to $690 including battery and shipping 5/31. Re: [IRCA] CC Pocket Radio
I had one, OK on FM except harder to null strong stations with earphone or headphone cord. On AM, the sensitivity selectivity were fairly good, but not great. I think the selectivities given are actually plus or minus figures, so really 8 kHz 5 kHz. The filters do have better shape factors and probably better ultimate rejection than most. But the 5 kHz narrow filter will not make it possible to get a very weak TA or TP 3 or 4 kHz from a strong local. It is designed to receive a fairly weak station 10 kHz from one of a moderate strength using 8 kHz filter, and to be able to receive a fairly weak station 10 kHz from a strong local, using the 5 kHz (2.5 kHz) filter. The Tecsun 300 series also uses bandwidth labels that are plus or minus so the narrowest is 2 kHz, best if you want to try to receive weak TA/TP signals on a pocket size radio. It will usually require help from an external antenna. The Sangean is better for DXing domestics if you want a pocket radio, due to audio quality. A report that the Sangean got some distant clears good enough to listen to is like saying it was sensitive enough to listen to many of my locals, when one looks at actual signal strengths. OK for domestic MW DX, FM, NOAA weather. For those who want to DX TA/TPs on a portable, the best is the CommRadio CR-1. Small, but won't fit in a pocket, costs $540 now with battery shipping, 30 day return refund less shipping charges. Price increase to $640-$690 on 5/31 is expected. During the day, it gets faint (generally unreadable) audio from WLW-700 (about 700 miles), using the Quantum QX Pro 12 amplified ferrite antenna. And this is with a strong local on 690! Selectivities are 0.5, 1, 1.8, 2.6, 5, 7.5, 15, 25 kHz. 73, George S., MN From: Guy Atkins d...@guyatkins.com To: irca@hard-core-dx.com Sent: Sunday, May 19, 2013 5:23 PM Subject: Re: [IRCA] CC Pocket Radio Hi Craig, This portable was introduced last year. Yes, maybe is what I like to see posted. We can determine a groundwave area fairly well, but skywave varies in intensity different areas are favored on different nights. Re: [IRCA] ? 4 ULR/DSP experts: -25kHz wide splatter in ?1k BW, , strong signal pumping?
Long before IBOC, I had a local 5kw @ 2.5 miles distance. I could hear (distorted) sidebands to plus or minus 40 Khz. So I called up the local FCC office and asked what was allowed. Reply was we require sidebands to be -75 dB down at plus or minus 55 kHz. I'm not the best at knowing technical things, so I must ask: Can a radio with good selectivity do anything more than change clear audio to distorted sidebands? In other words, can a radio reject something that is transmitted? If some can, what type of special circuitry is required? I know what is being done with the transmitter is a major factor. When I was 2.5 miles from the 5 kw on 1280, I was also maybe about 15 miles from WCCO-830. Some poor nights, I could weakly detect their splash up to 900 kHz. At the time there was a proposal for US to go to 9 kHz spacing, some clears that adequately restricted their sidebands would be allowed to increase power to 750 kw. So, WCCO tested their sideband reducer, and was only about half as wide. When FCC said no to 9 kHz spacing 750 kw, WCCO went back to as wide as it was before. 73, George S., MN From: Aaron Kreider aa...@campusactivism.org To: irca@hard-core-dx.com Sent: Sunday, June 30, 2013 12:25 AM Subject: Re: [IRCA] ? 4 ULR/DSP experts: -25kHz wide splatter in ?1k BW, , strong signal pumping? It appears it is possible to listen live (and record that), then DX that program hours later (and record that), and then compare the two recordings. Re: [IRCA] good portable receiver
One possibility would be you could get a Sony ICF-SW7600GR brand new from Amazon for $133 shipped. It can tune in 1 kHz steps has selectable LSB/USB with fine tuning. Also, you could get a Q-stick + from dxtools.com for about $52 + actual shipping 10% discount for dues paying members of many radio clubs. In my case, I got a Sony ICF-SW7600G used on eBay for about $77 shipped. Using the Q-stick + with it, I managed to get about 400 beacons in 1 year. Uses AA batteries. fairly small lightweight. 73, George S., MN From: Bob Young bobyoun...@hotmail.com To: NRC list a...@nrcdxas.org Cc: IRCA irca@hard-core-dx.com Sent: Tuesday, August 20, 2013 3:16 PM Subject: [IRCA] good portable receiver I'm actually thinking more of a SS communications receiver now, I was only worried about what would fit in a suitcase and never even thought of regular receivers, anyone here familiar with an ICOM IC-70 general coverage receiver? Re: [IRCA] 1240 unID - WJMA/WJNA now heard three times!
I apologize for saying I was sure it was WJMC. I didn't mention it, but it seemed there was a tiny fraction of a second delay between WJM the C, now notice very indistinct short noise (letter??) that I was sure was a C. What's before sounds like WJNE on that one WJNE on the 2 others as well. WJNE is an FM station in Bethany Beach, DE, that has primary coverage to MD. Think I saw the biggest town nearby is Salisbury? If we can find out if WJNE-FM Bethany Beach, DE owns anything on 1240, we may solve this. Dual ownership could be anywhere, they may also have a different format. Also, syndicated programs might mention affiliates. Worse yet, what if it's not call letters, but an abbreviation for some organization? So maybe contacting WJNE-FM asking if they own anything on 1240 would be the last good chance. 73, George S., MN On Monday, December 30, 2013 9:39 PM, Chernos Saul sau...@sympatico.ca wrote: Thank you, to the many of you, who listened and have pointed me to WJIM in Lansing MI. I think Paul is right, the only thing that comes up for Sunday Classics is KJAN. Was trying to figure out them giving the wrong temperature. The station website has forecasts radar, but doesn't show current temp. Might the wrong temp indicate they are either running an old show? It was 48 or so they said 35. Tried calling KJAN 1-800-283-5526 it just gave me the names of the people that work there it said nobody was available to answer call, but could leave callback # for any of them. [IRCA] Sorry, some of my carriers were local noise
My apology for that. I still can't tell which ones, so from now on I won't report something unless I hear audio or think I hear audio. I will not use my DSP-599zx anymore until I get a better AC adapter. I have powerline buzz, probably a little cable noise, maybe I could even get faint noise generated inside the R75 or it's big brick adapter. It's amazing how many carriers not from stations I was getting within 50 Hz of TA/TP/DU freqs, different directions, strengths. I will try to note the tone frequencies more precisely during day when they're all fake stations. I was using a Eton E1 w/8 Quantum loop, both on batteries which sometimes brought noise levels down and I think at least reduced the number of carriers from other stuff. But they're sort of falling apart now. I don't have anything with a 1 HZ readout get a little confused how to set the dual passband tuners when using USB or LSB to get the best frequency estimate. I really just concentrated on LW this last season, no super splash or IBOC. 73, George S., MN ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] What to do? SW2 bought off eBay has low sensitivity
I haven't left feedback yet or complained to seller. They said great condition. Case slightly discolored on top like slightly different shades of black, back has a few scratches, so cosmetics fair or possibly good. How likely is the low sensitivity being caused by 1 to all capacitors being bad? Bad transistor or other single part? Might it be alignment? Could just excess dust cause it? SYNC had low vol til I hit mode buttons few times. I'd guess the sensitivity might be 1,000uv on MW 10,000uv on LW, just doing a by ear comparison using the SW2 with the Quantum QX Pro amplified loop, the Tecsun PL-660 being used with the unamplified Q-stick plus. The Tecsun has 1,000uv mW sensitivity @ 26db S/N I think 5,000uv on LW. I only so far tested SW by putting my finger on a screw terminal hearing WWV weakly. What should I tell the seller? When Drake was still repairing I think they charged something like $300 to replace all the capacitors in an R8. Now they were bought out so maybe no service from them There doesn't seem to be any problem with audio quality or volume. This is a fairly rare receiver but think there's a good one on eBay now, maybe nearing $400? Is has a wide AM, narrow LSB/USB with or without SYNC. SSB is in 50Hz steps, radio has 100Hz readout. I paid $135 for it. The repair cost would be unknown, assuming a competent repairer could be found. I really wouldn't want to put over $150-$200 at most for repairs into it. I don't know what it's worth as is, or the chances of finding a buyer who could repair it. The 2,500 uV/m MW sensitivity would be considered poor by most DXers. The Tecsun PL-310 from anon-co is the same price. Sensitivity still isn't great, but better at 1,000 uV/m. Many use a loop with it to get TA/TP reception. You can get a discount on shipping if loop ordered at same time. 5 DSP selectivities. The radio is labeled in English, I got English manual by e-mail. Re: [IRCA] DX tests question
Isn't one of the problems in getting stations to test is that most are 24 hours, and they have commitments to run ads DX test programming might drive away listeners? I wonder if these objections could be avoided by DX tests of 1 minute or less? KJNP-1170 North Pole, AK used to give calls once on top of hour in morse code, as requested by DXers. Very short DX tests, but semi-permanent! Some stations may be confused about FCC rules. National Association of Government Communicators p.1 says stay tuned to television and radio broadcasts for important updates: If your facility (bomb shelter?gs) has a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio, this is a good source of information. I've been wondering why so many NOAA weather stations with coverage overlaps were built. Guess they could tell which way the wind was blowing the fallout, which they say could travel 400 miles. They don't seem to give any info as to how close to a detonation a transmitter or receiver might survive, or a person, either. Re: [IRCA] Grundig Satellite 750
Hi Jim, a MW DXer ranked it highly. No reviews on Amazon about LW. Amazon may be best place to buy this new $249.99 shipped. If you decide you don't like it you're only out return shipping cost. If the unit is detective you want to return for refund or replacement, Amazon will pay return shipping charges up to their cost to send to you. Looks like about 25% of shipped units in 3 years have been defective. I'm thinking more at first less now, but still Amazon has the best return policy I know with $50 discount. Probably easy return to a local Radio Shack, too. But if you keep it, you paid $299.95 + tax if not on sale. MW/LW performance should be boosted if you add a Radio Plus Q-Stick+. I use one on my Sony 2010 with about 350 LW beacons heard last several mos. Re: [IRCA] Kenwood R-5000 vs. Drake SW-8: Image rejection, sensitivity, and selectivity factors
Hi Rick, I had a SW8 would not recommend it for FM. Selectivity is not all that it could be no RDS. It is a good unit on other bands but I started to have a problem with part of a digit disappearing. It also quit working on batteries. My favorite overall for FM DX is the new Sangean CL-100 FM/MW/WX table radio about 7 long by 5 deep by 2 high. Comes with AC adapter can use 4 AA. No signal strength indicator a 2 second mute changing frequencies, but excellent performance with RBDS DSP. I paid about $66 (from Amazon). Receives adjacent to non-IBOC FM locals. Amazon has easy returns but this radio has 4 or 5 star ratings from everyone on there. The CL-100 comes with a magnetic mount antenna that plugs into RCA jack, at the end of a 6' cable. AM ant ground screws. MW is good but only 10 kHz steps seems only a single selectivity. Gets adjacent to locals. Has 3 speaker, 1 watt amplifier, bass treble controls, external antenna connections. Gets a fairly decent signal from your local 590 all day with internal antenna. For pocket radio, I use the Tecsun PL-310. FM performance like Sangean but no RDS. Does have LW (poor) MW/SW OK with selectivities of 12/8/6/4/2 kHz. Numerical signal strength reading. Only about $60 from Ms. Joyce (anon-co on eBay) she checks them before shipping in case the factory let a lemon go out. Volume is jumpy on weak fady signals. Got unreadable audio on MW f/W Eu, NW Afr Japan. The Kenwood R-5000 I read has internal temperature of 114 degrees, don't know if that's cause for worry. I only had the R-1000 don't recall it getting hot. The Sony tuner also runs hot. Reviews online of many radios. eham.net is pretty good for that Amazon for current models. The very new Sangean ATS-909X might be excellent ($260). I expect online reviews to be appearing in the next week or two. 73, George S., MN --- On Mon, 2/28/11, Rick Dau drummer1965...@yahoo.com wrote: From: Rick Dau drummer1965...@yahoo.com Subject: [IRCA] Kenwood R-5000 vs. Drake SW-8: Image rejection, sensitivity, and selectivity factors To: irca@hard-core-dx.com, a...@nrcdxas.org, a...@yahoogroups.com Date: Monday, February 28, 2011, 10:23 AM As you can probably surmise by the subject line, I'm doing some comparison shopping. My 2010 is dying (it's practically useless on LW and SW now, and it's always been so on FM), and I've narrowed my preference for my next set-up to two options: a) the Kenwood R-5000 + an FM tuner to be named later b) the Drake SW-8 Would like to find out from people who own either of these receivers how they perform, and I'm especially interested in how the SW-8 does on the FM side (if I'd be better off with a tuner, I'll go that route, but I would be quite happy if I could get a LW/MW/SW desktop that also has exceptional FM reception so that I don't have to pony up more $$$ for something that'll take up more space). And as far the the image rejection, the sensitivity, and the selectivity go, I want to know how both radios do in these areas on ALL bands. 73, Rick Dau South Omaha, NE ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Carrier was noted still 0530 UTC bur don't know if from same station. Checked 4845 evening hard to be positive with WWCR on 4840, but 4845 seemed not there. There were over 60 TA carriers last night but only a few had audio. Thanks. 73, George S., MN From: Nick Hall-Patch n...@ieee.org To: Mailing list for the International Radio Club of America irca@hard-core-dx.com Sent: Wednesday, October 12, 2011 11:53 PM Subject: Re: [IRCA] MN TA audio 0n 783 at 0215 UTC who? 1215. and 1268.9992 are the carriers heard here at 0430UT; 1215 is the beefier but still quite weak. 782.9998 shows an occasional trace here, George, but only using Spectran to see it. I believe your times are too early for Mauritania (can any east coaster verify its sign on time? EMWG says 0830UT, //4845, and s/off is given as 0100UT), but the carrier might be there a lot earlier. Can you figure out what time it starts to fade out? [IRCA] MN TA audio 1206 1251!
Never had audio on 1251 before! At 0017, some singing that sounded like an anthem or similar, perhaps celebrating Gadafi's death?? MW talk on 1205. Plus about 63 carriers with no audio, so far. Is there any chance the 1251 could've been anything other than Libya? It's like they found the modulation control. Apparently there wasn't enough local interest to keep up that part of their program schedule.
