I looked at radio-locator.com and it shows 50kw day pattern for KOUU only nulls
to S SE. I could just about imagine if they did a DX test with sweep tones
how many might hear it. 73, George S., MN

KOUU 1290 Pocatello ID is way over KUMA as I type this. Interesting as
KUMA is fair here days, but KOUU is 50 KW, compared to KUMA's 5 KW. It
says U5, directional days, but I have not looked at their pattern. I
would guess KOUU would null the West and East days though.

Re: [IRCA] CommRadio CR-1

2013-04-20 Thread George Sherman
There's a very lengthy thread about this radio at radioreference.com/ under
SDRs. They worked very hard to get the bugs out, so just about everything is as
it should be. There will be free software upgrades.
If you sign up for the newsletter today, you might get a coupon Monday for free
battery free shipping. He said to me in an e-mail we are having a special but
I didn't notice it on the site, so I *hope* it is for all.
commradio.com is the website. Don said the coupon is good until May 6th.

Even if you don't get a coupon it's $150 cheaper now than in June Don will
likely advertise the radio in QST. Don is selling them on eBay through
Universal Radio.

I've been in contact with Don, I wrote him couple mos ago requesting LW a
filter narrower than 1 kHz, so it has the 500 HZ filter LW now (but no
preselector for LW). A  truly portable mini-communications receiver with 7
selectivities, only 1.75lbs, internal battery is rechargable hundreds of times.
Imagine taking this radio to a place with no noise, setting up antenna,
selecting 500Hz DSP IF filter LSB or USB and tuning in 10 Hz steps for traces
of some very weak distant stations (TAs, TPs).

The MW sensitivity is not reduced compared to HF/SW, minimum discernible signal
-125 dBm. I can't imagine anyone wanting to return it, but there is a 30 day
return privilege, less shipping. Also nice it has FM BCB, NOAA weather, 2m
440 MHz ham bands, though less sensitive -95dBm on VHF/UHF.

It should be lots of fun I'm sure many will be sharing  their experiences. If
anyone wants to call the owner Don Moore 1-303-279-3671, he's a great guy
will answer if he's there also answers e-mails.
He said he would also supply me with 2 BNC to PL-259 adapters a pigtail, so
I'll have no problem connecting my Quantum loops.

It's for sale to buyers outside US beginning 5/1 likely price increase to
$690 including battery and shipping 5/31.

Re: [IRCA] CC Pocket Radio

2013-05-20 Thread George Sherman
I had one, OK on FM except harder to null strong stations with earphone or
headphone cord. On AM, the sensitivity selectivity were fairly good, but not
great. I think the selectivities given  are actually plus or minus figures, so
really 8 kHz 5 kHz. The filters do have better shape factors and probably
better ultimate rejection than most. But the 5 kHz narrow filter will not make
it possible to get a very weak TA or TP 3 or 4 kHz from a strong local. It is
designed to receive a fairly weak station 10 kHz from one of a moderate
strength using 8 kHz filter, and to be able to receive a fairly weak station 10
kHz from a strong local, using the 5 kHz (2.5 kHz) filter.

The Tecsun 300 series also uses bandwidth labels that are plus or minus so the
narrowest is 2 kHz, best if you want to try to receive weak TA/TP signals on a
pocket size radio. It will usually require help from an external antenna. The
Sangean is better for DXing domestics if you want a pocket radio, due to audio
quality. A report that the Sangean got some distant clears good enough to
listen to is like saying it was sensitive enough to listen to many of my
locals, when one looks at actual signal strengths. OK for domestic MW DX, FM,
NOAA weather.

For those who want to DX TA/TPs on a portable, the best is the CommRadio CR-1.
Small, but won't fit in a pocket, costs $540 now with battery shipping, 30
day return refund less shipping charges. Price  increase to $640-$690 on 5/31
is expected. During the day, it gets faint (generally unreadable) audio from
WLW-700 (about 700 miles), using the Quantum QX Pro 12 amplified ferrite
antenna. And this is with a strong local on 690! Selectivities are 0.5, 1, 1.8,
2.6, 5, 7.5, 15, 25 kHz. 73, George S., MN

Hi Craig,

This portable was introduced last year. The DSP based receiver makes the
extra, nominal 2.5 kHz bandwidth possible, but some owners criticize the CC
Pocket Radio for a soft mute problem, or other AGC issues:

Has anyone taken a look at the CC Pocket Radio?  Covers AM-FM-NOAA Weather.
The interesting part is that it has a 2.5kHz IF filter and will tune down
 to
1 kHz rather than 10/9 kHz as some do.  Seems cheap enough at $59.95

Yes, maybe is what I like to see posted. We can determine a groundwave area
fairly well, but skywave varies in intensity different areas are favored on
different nights. I think we can get skywave from at least as close as 30
miles, as I can hear some fading on KSTP-1500 at night, even though they beam
the equivalent of close to 100 kw my way. 73, George S., MN

Re: [IRCA] ? 4 ULR/DSP experts: -25kHz wide splatter in ?1k BW, , strong signal pumping?

2013-07-01 Thread George Sherman
Long before IBOC, I had a local 5kw @ 2.5 miles distance. I could hear
(distorted) sidebands to plus or minus 40 Khz. So I called up the local FCC
office and asked what was allowed. Reply was we require sidebands to be -75 dB
down at plus or minus 55 kHz. I'm not the best at knowing technical things, so
I must ask: Can a radio with good selectivity do anything more than change
clear audio to distorted sidebands? In other words, can a radio reject
something that is transmitted? If some can, what type of special circuitry is
required?

I know what is being done with the transmitter is a major factor. When I was
2.5 miles from the 5 kw on 1280, I was also maybe about 15 miles from WCCO-830.
Some poor nights, I could weakly detect their splash up to 900 kHz. At the time
there was a proposal for US to go to 9 kHz spacing, some clears that
adequately restricted their sidebands would be allowed to increase power to 750
kw. So, WCCO tested their sideband reducer, and was only about half as wide.
When FCC said no to 9 kHz spacing 750 kw, WCCO went back to as wide as it was
before. 73, George S., MN

I think some IBOC stations put out dirty signals - I've got this video

Hi folks.  This is an informal poll to determine attendance at the THURSDAY
EVENING DX-PEDITION held at this year's joint DX Convention.

I don't have your arrival info in front of me, but if you're here Thursday
you'll want to know that we have reserved a picnic shelter at a nearby lake
with space to deploy antennas and power for radios.  The event is hosted by
the Minnesota DX Club and will be an Open House from 6 PM to 10 PM
Thursday August 1st.

Would you kindly indicate by reply e-mail to me whether you might have an
interest in attending?  If so, do you need any special hook-ups etc?  We
anticipate deploying a short BOG, some HF/UHF gear and hopefully one of
Kaz's new antenna ideas.  Transportation will be arranged by car-pool, so
you might advise if you can be one of the drivers.

An early indication of your interest will be really helpful!

Thanks,

Website tonga-broadcasting.net/radio-tonga.html has program schedules listen
live times. It appears it is possible to listen live (and record that), then DX
that program hours later (and record that), and then compare the two
recordings. It shows last program 7/24 started 11:15 am (I think they mean 1115
UTC?), for 7/26 live stream is 12 am to 5:30 am (assume UTC?), last program
starts 10am. So this does seem to suggest different sign-off times to me. I
assume the dates are UTC, but not sure. Tonga time is UTC +13 according to
WRTH. 73, George S., MN

been on an extended schedule.

[IRCA] Comm Radio CR-1 going from $500 to $599 Th 8/1

2013-07-29 Thread George Sherman
If you're really interested you ought to call Aerostream: tell them that you
heard about the CR1 show tell demo scheduled for this week's DX Convention.
Chances are they might honor the old price another week for convention
attendees, or say you can order now they won't charge the card (the
introductory price) until they ship, which will likely be after you get back,
so there is a chance to cancel order.

LW, MW, SW are all good here, using Quantum loops for LW MW. Something
tunable loop or preselector or low pass filter liked needed to keep MW off LW
Sony ANLP-1 indoor amplified antenna that has high pass filter to keep MW off
SW. SW just a very few distorted weak spurs likely from KCMP-89.3 with 96kw @
maybe 10 miles. I don't recommend the radio for FM NOAA weather as range is
half that of my best portables. More details at commradio.com much discussion
on radioreference.com under SDRs.

If you want to attend the convention, registration is $45 for Pavek Museum
Admission Fri eve Pizza Fest (maybe other food possible) Saturday Banquet 8
oz sirloin, baked potato, green beans, salad, bread, chocolate cake, coffee or
tea. If you don't pay by Tu afternoon $46 Paypal, registration at convention is
possible but you might need to order off the menu. See nrcdxas.org or contact
Mark Durenberger ma...@durenberger.com

DXpedition Th eve 6PM-10PM Carpools from Holiday Inn 94th St I-35W, eating
along the way near Dakota Co 42   Nicollet to Lac Lavon Park in Burnsville,
5501 Lac Lavon Dr is address for huge picnic shelter's parking lot, which
behind it is open field 300' N-S by 600' E-W. See it on Google maps! I'll be
using the CommRadio CR-1 portable miniature communications receiver w/Quantum
loops or maybe other antennas. This location is in the null of most locals!

Bringing my Tecsun PL-310 to check for tropo e-skip. Will bring some
non-toxic Cutter Natural Bug Spray for use by all. Need to get going on my show
tell for CR-1 why/how to start beacon DXing. 73, George S., MN

Re: [IRCA] DX Test - WDEV 550 Waterbury, Vermont - August 16

2013-08-16 Thread George Sherman
Also in MN, may or may not have had code, indistinct if I did not sounding
like WDEV if even really code. About 11:06pm CDT, a couple 2nd tone. Then I
also noticed a much weaker 1000 Hz tone, which turned out to be from 549,
presumably Algeria, but not nearly strong enough for audio. Will be interesting
to hear if it was on.

Shortly before the test, WBZ-1030 at S-9+10, 550 jumble at S-9+20, but
thought code or sweep tones might break through. KFYR-ND was dominant, with
music sound effects while talking about Area 51 in Nevada.

Using both R75 CR1, switching Quantum loop between the 2. 73, George S.,  MN

Re: [IRCA] good portable receiver

2013-08-20 Thread George Sherman
One possibility would be you could get a Sony ICF-SW7600GR brand new from
Amazon for $133 shipped. It can tune in 1 kHz steps has selectable LSB/USB
with fine tuning. Also, you could get a Q-stick + from dxtools.com for about
$52 + actual shipping 10% discount for dues paying members of many radio
clubs.

In my case, I got a Sony ICF-SW7600G used on eBay for about $77 shipped. Using
the Q-stick + with it, I managed to get about 400 beacons in 1 year. Uses AA
batteries. fairly small lightweight. 73, George S., MN

I'm actually thinking more of a SS communications receiver now, I was only
worried about what would fit in a suitcase and never even thought of regular
receivers, anyone here familiar with an ICOM IC-70 general coverage receiver? I
think I can probably pick one up for about 200-300 bucks and they get very good
reviews on ham.net. even for MW reception. Are Kiwi filters still available for
something like this? If not this receiver can anyone here recommend a good
older receiver like this which also won't break the bank?

Best reception time here now tends to be around 2300 UTC / 7 p.m. local before
interference from the west gets too strong.  Of course at that earlier time you
sometimes have a different cast of characters as Middle East stations are
still in darkness.  Many signals from UAE, Iran, Saudi Arabia, etc. are in the
mix then.  Saudi on 1521 is often the biggest blaster here but it and most
others from that area would be gone by 0445 UTC.

Re: [IRCA] 1240 unID - WJMA/WJNA now heard three times!

2013-12-30 Thread George Sherman
I apologize for saying I was sure it was WJMC. I didn't mention it, but it
seemed there was a tiny fraction of a second delay between WJM the C, now
notice very indistinct short noise (letter??) that I was sure was a C. What's
before sounds like WJNE on that one WJNE on the 2 others as well. WJNE is an
FM station in Bethany Beach, DE, that has primary coverage to MD. Think I saw
the biggest town nearby is Salisbury?

If we can find out if WJNE-FM Bethany Beach, DE owns anything on 1240, we may
solve this. Dual ownership could be anywhere, they may also have a different
format. Also, syndicated programs might mention affiliates. Worse yet, what if
it's not call letters, but an abbreviation for some organization? So maybe
contacting WJNE-FM asking if they own anything on 1240 would be the last good
chance. 73, George S., MN

Very auroral cx last night.  Added WHIE 1320 GA to the overall log last
night.

Heard a very weak NCAA Mens bball game, Clemson vs VA Tech.  Local ad break
around 2020, with an insurance ad.  Town might have been Hartselle or
Forestelle, something -elle.  Did anyone else hear this game on 1370?
Toledo dominated during most breaks, of course.

1320 WHIE GA  Griffin 3-8 2015 ID popped out of the din.  Due to the au
cx., and weak signal, it may have been truly 83 watts.  NEW! (DH-IN)

1370 unID 3-8 2020 ACC bball tourney game, Clemson vs VA Tech.  Local break
with insurance ad.  Town sounded like Forest-elle or Hartselle.  Poor.

E-W.  Heard a mention of Sunday Classics and a temp reading of 35 degrees
given out at 2035 CLT, but no ID before heading back into classical music.  The

Re: [IRCA] 1220 unID w/classical music looping E-W from Omaha

2012-03-11 Thread George Sherman
I think Paul is right, the only thing that comes up for Sunday Classics is
KJAN. Was trying to figure out them giving the wrong temperature. The station
website has forecasts radar, but doesn't show current temp. Might the wrong
temp indicate they are either running an old show? It was 48 or so they said
35.

Tried calling KJAN 1-800-283-5526 it just gave me the names of the people
that work there it said nobody was available to answer call, but could leave
callback # for any of them. I didn't bother. http//:tunein.com when I
went there gave description as Classic Hits, normally meaning rock, but think
not in this case as I did notice a # of stations using Classics slogan that are
classical. 73, George S., MN

[IRCA] More on 1420 Yahoo Sports WAOC

2012-03-20 Thread George Sherman
WAOC website says have your own sports talk show on the radio and on the
internet. For a small hourly rate, you or your group could have your own Sports
Talk Show. Sportsradio 1420 is making available limited air time for private
groups and individual sports programming. k...@1420sports.com  Presumably a
question like do you have any Yahoo Sports Radio on your station could/would be
answered? Flagship station is KGOW-1560 owned by Gow Broadcasting. Maybe they
would know also?

The YSR affiliate list is copyright 2011 so could it be out-of-date (?) would
they list stations that had only a few 3 to 5 minute summaries from them? I
agree with KAZ, it's not definite,WAOC is only IMO top suspect until Jim gets a
reply. 73, George S.

from stations I was getting within 50 Hz of TA/TP/DU freqs, different
directions, strengths. I will try to note the tone frequencies more precisely
during day when they're all fake stations.

I was using a Eton E1 w/8 Quantum loop, both on batteries which sometimes
brought noise levels down and I think at least reduced the number of carriers
from other stuff. But they're sort of falling apart now. I don't have anything
with a 1 HZ readout get a little confused how to set the dual passband tuners
when using USB or LSB to get the best frequency estimate. I really just
concentrated on LW this last season, no super splash or IBOC. 73, George S., MN

[IRCA] What to do? SW2 bought off eBay has low sensitivity

2012-06-15 Thread George Sherman
I haven't left feedback yet or complained to seller. They said great condition.
Case slightly discolored on top like slightly different shades of black, back
has a few scratches, so cosmetics fair or possibly good.

How likely is the low sensitivity being caused by 1 to all capacitors being
bad? Bad transistor  or other single part?
Might it be alignment? Could just excess dust cause it? SYNC had low vol til I
hit mode buttons few times.

I'd guess the sensitivity might be 1,000uv on MW 10,000uv on LW, just doing a
by ear comparison using the SW2 with the Quantum QX Pro amplified loop, the
Tecsun PL-660 being used with the unamplified Q-stick plus. The Tecsun has
1,000uv mW sensitivity @ 26db S/N I think 5,000uv on LW. I only so far tested
SW by putting my finger on a screw terminal hearing WWV weakly.

What should I tell the seller? When Drake was still repairing I think they
charged something like $300 to replace all the capacitors in an R8. Now they
were bought out so maybe no service from them There doesn't seem to be any
problem with audio quality or volume. This is a fairly rare receiver but think
there's a good one on eBay now, maybe nearing $400? Is has a wide AM, narrow
LSB/USB with or without SYNC. SSB is in 50Hz steps, radio has 100Hz readout.

I paid $135 for it. The repair cost would be unknown, assuming a competent
repairer could be found. I really wouldn't want to put over $150-$200 at most
for repairs into it. I don't know what it's worth as is, or the chances of
finding a buyer who could repair it. Any thoughts? 73, George S., MN

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] 1520 Fox Sports Radio

2012-09-22 Thread George Sherman
KSIB I think started Fox Sports radio on their AM 9/10 IIRC. The FM remains
country except for a couple popular local programs, according to their website.
When looking up Fox Sports Radio 1520, found WJMP Kent, OH and another new
affiliate WFAU Augusta, ME. Was WFAU a recent CP? Anyone heard it yet? Their
website just says under construction. 73, George S., MN

As Paul pointed out, it's a recent (in this case, VERY recent, as in within the
past few days) format change.  KOLM remains ESPN, but the mystery station you
may now be hearing with Fox Sports Radio is KSIB in Creston, Iowa.  This per
monitoring by myself throughout the day today.  They carry Jim Rome live from
11-2 CLT, among other programming.

I guess the question I have to ask is...WHY?   Des Moines, some 50 miles
away, already has a Fox affiliate on 1460.  And in the meantime, the residents
of the community of Creston are now being deprived of a station that will
provide local service to that community (I don't know if any format changes
have taken place at the sister FM on 101.3, since I can't normally get it
here).

Translation oddities:

*KK-D6110 is a powerful, full-band appearance of prudent generosity DSP
radio

*Digital filter design, with high selectivity and anti-mirror radio
interference

*AM / FM deposit Taiwan clearance

*Special software used by the U.S. radio digital signal processing chip,

Unfortunately, I do not know Chinese but in trade for a radio, I would

Re: [IRCA] DX tests question

2010-12-26 Thread George Sherman
Isn't one of the problems in getting stations to test is that most are 24
hours, and they have commitments to run ads DX test programming might drive
away listeners?

I wonder if these objections could be avoided by DX tests of 1 minute or less?
KJNP-1170 North Pole, AK used to give calls once on top of hour in morse code,
as requested by DXers. Very short DX tests, but semi-permanent!

Some stations may be confused about FCC rules. Is there really anything that
says they can't ID on top of hour in code, as long as they also give voice ID?

And a couple things:

If any of you have initiated conversations with engineers or other station
reps, and nothing has yet been settled or come to pass, would you please
consider recomnecting and seeing if you can firm up a test in 2011?

And your opinions, please on an idea - would it make sense, when writing or
e-mailing for QSLs, to include a separate letter, or a phrase in the QSL
request, explaining that one thing AM DXers like...yadda yadda, is DX tests...?
The request would of course be more refined than that. It could be as simple as
a sentence. Or would it somehow be counter-productive to the request for a QSL?

Your good wisdom and guidance, please...

Oh, good - more clutter.

I think there are different questions to be asked - starting with whether or
not the number of such stations broadcasting the same announcements 24/7/365 in
continuous loops or rebroadcasting NOAA Weather radio in the same manner serves
an purpose at all. It really ins't necessary for them to broadcast at all
unless they have something to say, i.e. in the case of some sort of emergency.
Then comes the question of whether every small municipality needs to have their
own station.

On the FCC web site there is a notice dated 12/30/2010 regarding an
NPRM  (Notice of Proposed Rulemaking) seeking public comment
about expanded used of TIS on the BCB.   Below is an
excerpt: from FCC Web Site:

Tom Jasinski

Joliet

Generally, the Order and NPRM seeks
public comment on whether the FCC should significantly expand the
scope of permitted communications and alerts by local governments on
TIS stations and what limits if, in any, should be placed on those
noncommercial messages.
The FCC is also seeking comment on whether TIS power limits
should be modified to reach a larger listening audience in their
coverage area and to what extent TIS broadcast locations should be
expanded without resulting in harmful interference to the
communications of other licensed broadcasters.

National Association of Government Communicators p.1 says stay tuned to
television and radio broadcasts for important updates: If your facility (bomb
shelter?gs) has a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
Weather Radio, this is a good source of information.

I've been wondering why so many NOAA weather stations with coverage overlaps
were built. Guess they could tell which way the wind was blowing the fallout,
which they say could travel 400 miles. They don't seem to give any info as to
how close to a detonation a transmitter or receiver might survive, or a person,
either. Hope it never happens. 73, George S., MN

With the massive EMP wave sent out from a nuclear detonation, this leaves me to
ask two questions, George:

1. Do you expect a transmitter that has been exposed to many Giga Electron
Volts to survive that and keep transmitting?

2. Do you expect a common household receiver to withstand equal punishment from
nuclear weapon EMP?

I am sure that propagation would be a mess for a while, that the transmitters
and receivers cooked and we would be worried about a lot more than the radio
being off the air.

If it doesn't have tubes, you can forget trying to use it.

Here in MN, I'm about at 45 degrees north about 1,100 air miles inland from
Boston. I've had audio from both a few times using just an 8 amplified loop.
I'd guess if someone had a long uni-directional antenna in a noise free
location, hooked up to a sharply selective receiver, they'd probably be
semi-regular with audio. Seems I can get at least a weak carrier most nights.

I don't keep very good records but am guessing Algeria is #3 here for TA audio

Re: [IRCA] Grundig Satellite 750

2011-02-21 Thread George Sherman
Hi Jim, a MW DXer ranked it highly. No reviews on Amazon about LW. Amazon may
be best place to buy this new $249.99 shipped. If you decide you don't like it
you're only out return shipping cost. If the unit is detective you want to
return for refund or replacement, Amazon will pay return shipping charges up to
their cost to send to you.

Looks like about 25% of shipped units in 3 years have been defective. I'm
thinking more at first less now, but still Amazon has the best return policy
I know with $50 discount. Probably easy return to a local Radio Shack, too. But
if you keep it, you paid $299.95 + tax if not on sale.

MW/LW performance should be boosted if you add a Radio Plus Q-Stick+. I use one
on my Sony 2010 with about 350 LW beacons heard last several mos.

Best wishes, George S., MN

Re: [IRCA] Kenwood R-5000 vs. Drake SW-8: Image rejection, sensitivity, and selectivity factors

2011-03-01 Thread George Sherman
Hi Rick, I had a SW8 would not recommend it for FM. Selectivity is not all
that it could be no RDS. It is a good unit on other bands but I started to
have a problem with part of a digit disappearing. It also quit working on
batteries.

My favorite overall for FM DX is the new Sangean CL-100 FM/MW/WX table radio
about 7 long by 5 deep by 2 high. Comes with AC adapter can use 4 AA. No
signal strength indicator a 2 second mute changing frequencies, but excellent
performance with RBDS DSP. I paid about $66 (from Amazon).
Receives adjacent to non-IBOC FM locals. Amazon has easy returns but this radio
has 4 or 5 star ratings from everyone on there.

The CL-100 comes with a magnetic mount antenna that plugs into RCA jack, at the
end of a 6' cable. AM ant ground screws.

MW is good but only 10 kHz steps seems only a single selectivity. Gets
adjacent to locals. Has 3 speaker, 1 watt amplifier, bass treble controls,
external antenna connections. Gets a fairly decent signal from your local 590
all day with internal antenna.

For pocket radio, I use the Tecsun PL-310. FM performance like Sangean but no
RDS. Does have LW (poor) MW/SW OK with selectivities of 12/8/6/4/2 kHz.
Numerical signal strength reading. Only about $60 from Ms. Joyce (anon-co on
eBay) she checks them before shipping in case the factory let a lemon go out.
Volume is jumpy on weak fady signals. Got unreadable audio on MW f/W Eu, NW Afr
 Japan.

The Kenwood R-5000 I read has internal temperature of 114 degrees, don't know
if that's cause for worry. I only had the R-1000 don't recall it getting hot.
The Sony tuner also runs hot. Reviews online of many radios. eham.net is pretty
good for that Amazon for current models.

The very new Sangean ATS-909X might be excellent ($260). I expect online
reviews to be appearing in the next week or two. 73, George S., MN

As you can probably surmise by the
subject line, I'm doing some comparison
shopping.  My 2010 is dying (it's practically useless on
LW and SW now, and it's
always been so on FM), and I've narrowed my preference for
 my next set-up to two
 options:

 a) the Kenwood R-5000 + an FM tuner to be named later

 b) the Drake SW-8

Would like to find out from people who own either of these
 receivers how they
perform, and I'm especially interested in how the SW-8 does
 on the FM side (if
I'd be better off with a tuner, I'll go that route, but I
 would be quite happy
if I could get a LW/MW/SW desktop that also has exceptional
 FM reception so that
I don't have to pony up more $$$ for something that'll
 take up more space).  And
as far the the image rejection, the sensitivity, and the
 selectivity go, I want
to know how both radios do in these areas on ALL bands.

Re: [IRCA] South Asian on 1090 - can anyone in the Detroit area give this a listen?

2011-03-23 Thread George Sherman
WCAR isn't owned by the Catholics anymore, station was sold. Now brokered
religion. Almost certainly what you had as there are over 20,000 Asians in WCAR
coverage area, according to www.city-data.com 73, George S., MN

This was in fairly well at times, but
of course when TOH came around it faded down. So no IDs.
That said, I am prepared to rule out KULF TX, because the
signal was just too consistent for 250 (daytime) watts. I
tried to get into its web stream but had trouble, even
though this worked for me a few days ago in Toronto. I'm
guessing this is WCAR Livonia MI, as others have suggested
this as a likely candidate. But this doesn't seem to fit
 their (supposed) Catholic format.

Anyhow, this South Asian music, a bit Bollywood'ish, stands
out well on 1090 for anyone wanting to chase it. I'm getting
in mainly between 2000-2100. WTAM has removed its IBOC,
either temporarily or permanently, making 1090 much more
 DXable.

[IRCA] WXYG-540 Sauk Rapids, MN back on air

2011-04-14 Thread George Sherman
DX buddy Todd in Woodbury told me to relay this message 2 days ago. Maybe I
should check see if it's still on! He says their new format is thrash metal,
sometimes also called death metal. We were wondering if this is the only MW
station with this format?

They're relatively low-powered and directional (day night), but the odd
format (if still on) should help alert DXers they might be getting it. This
station isn't listed at radio-locator.com or Barry's site, either.

They've been on (and off) a short time with various formats. They're the 22nd

are strong. 73, George S., MN

I suspect that the other city was St.
Cloud since Sauk Rapids and St. Cloud are almost contiguous.
The WXYG pattern on the FCC site shows a distorted figure 8
E-W (more E than W) during the day and a blob south (which I
bet KWMT loves) at night altho I suspect that their night
time coverage is limited to St. Cloud because of our friend
CBK.  Last summer, WXYG was marginally audible in Grand
Rapids during the day, CBK was local-like at night.  It
will be interesting to check again when we return there in a
couple of weeks.  Out of curiosity, how well do you
receive the 1010 Sauk Rapids station? - John

1215. and 1268.9992 are the carriers heard here at 0430UT; 1215
is the beefier but still quite weak.

782.9998 shows an occasional trace here, George, but only using
Spectran to see it.  I believe your times are too early for
Mauritania (can any east coaster verify its sign on time?  EMWG says
0830UT, //4845, and s/off is given as 0100UT), but the carrier might
be there a lot earlier.    Can you figure out what time it starts to
fade out?  That might give you an idea of where the transmitter could be.

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] MN TA audio 1206 1251!

2011-10-20 Thread George Sherman
Never had audio on 1251 before! At 0017, some singing that sounded like an
anthem or similar, perhaps celebrating Gadafi's death?? MW talk on 1205. Plus
about 63 carriers with no audio, so far. Is there any chance the 1251 could've
been anything other than Libya? It's like they found the modulation control.
Moderate level carriers on 891,
954 1215. 1584 has odd sound, like possibly 2 or 3 carriers? 73, George S., MN

unless foreign. Roughly on 1210.4. KGYN WPHT reading S-9+30 dB on R75 w/8

Subject: [IRCA] Approx 420 Hz het on 1210?

On my commute home between 5-6 pm EST, in SW PA, I'm hearing a STRONG het on
1210, approx. a G# (415 Hz). Now, at 7:30 pm at home, I'm also hearing it on
my Tecsun. Peaks roughly N-S. Any ideas? Thanks-

Hi All:

What about CJMR - 1320?  They're licensed to Mississauga and though they're now
100% ethnic, I used to hear them here in English in the AM doing local nx.
Apparently there wasn't enough local interest to keep up that part of their
program schedule.  I suppose the new 960 could have a fair bit of power, since
the two old 960s in Ontario (Kingston and Cambridge) are long gone to FM.  But
wouldn't a decent power level for this one tend to draw it into the Toronto
metro market?

WKFL IS NOT on the air and has NOT been in months. It has NOT done Gospel

THIS CASE, when they GET BACK on the air, it is/has been/will be SPORTS with
 SPORTING NEWS RADIO.

Any trace to Gospel music and WKFL is OLD INFORMATION from the previous
ownerhsip, Walker Broadcasting. When current ownership, TalkNSports leased
out WKFL, it was to a SPANISH operator, NOT Gospel.

OK Paul...well thanks for the Detective work...and it's back to the Drawing
Board again!!
This has got to be something fairly NEW on the air...or a very recent
Programming Change for some station as there is absolutely NOTHING on the
Web...and Nobody else appears to heave heard this...even though I've heard it
twice in the past 18 Hours!!

I guess I'll just keep listening to it til they finally give a CALL, a CITY, a
LOCAL Ad or whatever it takes to ID this...or wait til somebody else gets lucky
and hears it with the needed info!!

Thanks to all that are offering advice and info on this Mystery Station. I
appreciate the efforts

I thought it seemed English as at 0615 I could tell woman said something about
Communism. At 0713, another slight brief fade-up, with man seemingly in
English? Is this possible at all that someone could be here in English? Or
maybe another languge where a few of their words are pronounced about the same
