Try rebooting the computer. Do a complete shut down, not a restart. That

All,
I have jaws 11 but also notice this behavior in jaws12 as well. If I'm
downloading something no matter what it is jaws will act like this in OE.
When I arrow down it will say unread, unread, unread, without speaking the
message, also when I arrow down through the folders it will not speak the
folders. The way I fix this is to restart jaws. Anyone know why this is
happening?

I am running OE on a win xp home pc.
Thanks,
Troy

2010-09-18 Thread Josh

Brian,
Thank you for this information.Yes, I did realize that you had typed control
page up and control page down for moving from page to page. This is one of
the ways I had found to move from page to page and then I also have found
that in print preview you can go to the end of the page, press the end key
and then right arrow and this will also take you to the next page. More
steps involved but if not in a hurry I sometimes use this. I especially
liked the function in MS Word 2003 where when you were at the end of the
page you could just press your down arrow to get to the next page. The down
arrow alone was a lot simpler method but since I was having to use the
control page up and down to get to the previous or next page I thought it
might be a setting that i had inadvertently changed. However, I guess as
programs evolve we should be ready to change our methods for performing a
certain task as well. Thank you for reassuring that I had seen the control
page up and down though.

Hi Josh,

You can use CTRL+page up and CTRL+page down to move to next or previous
page
respectively. If you have been navigating by fields, using the find
command
or navigating using certain other elements then those controls will not
move
by page. For example, if you have used the find command then the
CTRL+page
down will find the next occurrence of your search string. You can use
CTRL+G, shift+tab to the go to box and pick page and then type a page
number
in the edit box. When you use the go to button, focus should go to that
page. Your CTRL+page up or CTRL+page down will return to moving by page.
This works best in the print view. Use the CTRL+Alt+P to switch into
print
view. The problem with the outline view is that it is for a person to
view
a document using different levels of viewing. A person can choose to
view
by heading 1, 2, etc., and keystrokes such as the tab key work
differently

in that view. If only certain levels of headings are chosen to be viewed
then you can easily jump past pages. There could be three, four or more
pages between the headings being viewed and so pages between those
headings
will not be viewed. Again, the best view is really the print view. The
CTRL+page up, CTRL+page down and the go to part of the find dialog
should
work for you.

Take care.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word 2007 and Jaws 10 Problem

Friends,
I am using Microsoft Word 2007 with Jaws 10 on a Dell Inspiron 1545
Operating System (OS) XP Pro. Now that is out of the way the problem I am
having is Jaws only seems to want to read in the Print Preview mode/
outline
view. The reason this is a problem is if there is a lot of pages involved
then Jaws tends to want to skip pages and has trouble transitioning from
one
page to another one. I usually have to go to the end of the page and
press
the end key after that I have to do a right arrow to get to the next
page.

Is there a more compatible view that Jaws will read in? I have tried the
draft view with no luck if it is in the full view then it does not read
either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws 11, SMA 12, SMA 13 and another issue dealing with Caps Lock key

2010-09-18 Thread Josh
Friends,
This is the first time I have purchased upgrades for Jaws. Can I go to the FS
activate website and activate or authorize the Jaws 11 to run as a full
version? Or will I have to insert the CD I got with my first version in order
to do this? If I can just go to the FS Activate site then it will be a lot
simpler process. I downloaded Jaws 11 a while back and was running it as a
demo. I purchased these upgrades yesterday and was told that I would recieve
something in the mail in about a week. Now, another issue I am running into
using caps lock key, I alot of times will type my subject line with caps lock
key on however, if I forget to turn caps lock key off until I am in the body of
the message when i go to type after turning the caps lock key off it will wrap
my screen to the bottom or will jump me up into the send to fields. Is there a
setting that will correct this and keep it from happening? I also notice
sometimes when typing in MS Word 2007 that if I go to delete a letter it may
delete the whole word in order to correct this I have to do a refresh of the
screen, I also notice that when this is happening I can left arrow and it may
only read one character of the word that has been typed. When this is happening
if I need to delete more than one character I may end up deleting a whole
sentence. Right arrowing it will read normally. In order to correct this
behavior I have to do a refresh of the screen. Is there a permanent correct for
this behavior? I am having these problems on my Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. On
this laptop my OS is XP Pro. the problems occur within MS Word 2007 and outlook
express. I am currently using Jaws 10. Any help on these matters will
definitely be appreciated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word 2007 and Jaws 10 Problem

2010-09-18 Thread Brian Lee
Hello Josh,

If you are working in print layout view in word 2007, you should still be
able to use down arrow key when on the last line of a page to move to the
next page. If the cursor is on the last character on a page, using right
arrow key should also be moving focus to the next page. If the cursor is at
the top of a page, the up arrow key should be moving the cursor to the
bottom of the previous page. If the cursor is in the first character
position on a page then the left arrow key should move the cursor to the
last character position on the previous page. This behavior has not changed
and should be working if you are using print layout view in Word 2007.

If you are using the page layout mode in Word 2007, the right and left arrow
keys and the up and down arrow keys should be switching pages. You can
click on the screen and use arrow keys for their normal functions, but
unless you do that you should be moving a page at a time with right arrow
and down arrow keys moving toward the bottom of the document, and focus
should move back toward the top of the document a page at a time when using
up or left arrow keys. JAWS should speak the page numbers as you use the
arrow keys in this layout. In Word 2007, if you use the full screen choice
for viewing, the system starts using the page layout mode. JAWS does not
work well in this view, but if you have some sight to use when reading the
screen then you might like that mode as you can just use arrow keys to move
between screens or pages of information. When working in the page layout
mode there is no status bar showing at the bottom of the screen, and there
is no ribbon at the top of the screen. You can still read the one line of
status type information at the top of the window by moving to the status bar
using function key 6. Using right and left arrow keys on the status line
will move between choices. One of the choices is view options. The
default setting for this mode is to show a page at a time. In the default
mode, you can use arrow keys to move a page at a time. The very top line of
the window will contain a view options button that when clicked will give
a menu of choices. You can choose to view two pages at a time, increase or
decrease text size, show the printed page, and make other choices. If you
choose to use two pages at a time, JAWS will jump two pages at a time when
using the arrow keys. The top line of the screen will also show pages 1-2
of so many, 2-3 of so many, etc. Again, this view is a full screen reading
view and enables focus to be moved one or two pages at a time by simply
using arrow keys, but it is not the best view to work in if you are
depending on JAWS for getting information and you are unable to use your
sight for reading the screen. The Alt+delete key combination will still let
you know the page that is active. You can press escape key to leave the
screen layout mode. There is not a Word hotkey for page layout mode but you
can easily add one if you want to use that view.

The print preview option is different than the print layout view. One
difference is that the zoom level goes to 50 percent in print preview.

Take care.

Hello-

I had to make that switch a few months ago when my old computer passed into
the great recycle bin in the landfill. If you go to the Microsoft website
you can read about each of their versions and compare their features with
your own needs. It isn't a bargain to buy a system that will not meet all
of your needs. For example, I work in both English and in Spanish. When I
bought my computer it came with MS Home and Student (something like that)
but it did not have a language pack. I chose to upgrade to 7 Ultimate
because it did have the multi-language capability and other features I
wanted. I had to pay an additional $100 American for the boost. After you
review the different features I am sure to best one for you will become
apparent.

Brian,
I am starting to lean more towards this being a Jaws problem rather than a
Microsoft problem. I seem to lose focus quite a bit when in Microsoft Word
now. So, along with it jumping pages and wanting to only read one character
of a word when left arrowing I am thinking I may need to do a Jaws repair or
just go ahead and figure out how to authorize my Jaws 11 demo. When I open
up Microsoft Word I am automatically in the print layout view and the zoom
is set at 100 percent. Sometimes when opening up the MS word document Jaws
is sluggish to respond to the command and start reading . however, today I
opened up the MSW document and had no problems. I do not notice these
problems as often using the Jaws 11 demo. I purchased 11 along with SMA's 12
and 13 over the telephone, so now just have to figure out how to activate
it. Thank you very much for all your help on this matter.

Hi all.
I went to Windows Update to see if I had the latest updates and got the
following message:

Install the ActiveX control required to view the website
The website will not display correctly on your computer without this control.
To install it:
1. Right-click the Internet Explorer Information Bar. It's located just below
the address bar.
2. In the right-click menu, click Install ActiveX Control.
3. In the Security Warning dialog box, click Install.

Can someone tell me the keystroke to get to the information bar?

Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Upgrading to Windows 7

2010-09-18 Thread Steve

FRancis,

Let's take this from the beginning. If you choose to upgrade to Windows 7,
that is of course your decision. But, I'd like to raise some points of
consideration first.

1. What reasons do you have for wanting to upgrade? Some of us, such as
myself, do some assistive technology training, and therefore, I have chosen
to have access to XP, Vista, and Windows 7. Since my wife is also blind, I
can steal her Win 7 machine if I need to check something. If your current
programs etc. are working fine, there is no immediate reason to upgrade
unless you either just want to use it or for work-related reasons you need
to start using Windows 7. You should know that, as long as you have Service
Pack 3 for XP, it will be supported by Microsoft for another four years.

2. Have you made sure before you upgrade that your machine and its
peripherals will support Windows 7? I would recommend installing the
Microsoft Windows 7 upgrade advisor and see what it reports. After that,
take a look at your printer and scanner drivers, look on the manufacturer's
site for each and make sure they have drivers that will support Windows 7.
Some manufacturers with older equipment don't support either, while others
may have drivers for the 32-bit version but not the 64-bit version.

3. There are several versions of Windows 7. The Basic version is stripped
down and only used in the sub-powered netbook computers. Your option for
most home users is Home Premium. There is also a Professional version that
adds some network enhancements like more secure company network domain
log-on, and the ability to run in XP simulation mode; and ultimate which
builds on the enhancements in Windows 7 professional such as BitLocker to
secure your personal data from theft or loss. For a comparison, see

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/compare/default.aspx

4. Legally, you are supposed to buy the full version because you supposedly
can't upgrade from XP to Windows 7 directly. However, if you look around,
you will find articles that will tell you how to upgrade using the upgrade
copy of Windows 7. That will save you a fair amount of money. For example,

http://www.windowssecrets.com/2009/11/12/02-Clean-install-Windows-7-from-the-upgrade-disc

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Upgrading to Windows 7

2010-09-18 Thread Don Marang
If you decide your computer hardware, software, printer, scanner, and all
other peripherals are compatible, I think you would probably want the
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade. If your computer has XP, it is
eligible for the upgrade. In performing an upgrade from XP to Windows 7 a
clean, or what Microsoft calls a custom install is required. This means
it must format the partition and install fresh. If you have enough hard
disk space, you might want to install as a dual boot system, also called
side by side, where it installs Windows 7 in a new partition and leaves XP
installed in a shrunken partition. This allows you to choose when starting
the computer which OS you want to use for that session.

If you decide to buy the upgrade, Amazon has it available for $109.99.
http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Windows-Home-Premium-Upgrade/dp/B002DHLUWK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8s=softwareqid=1284841485sr=8-1
$177.14

Since the link is so long, you might need to cut and paste the link.
Actually, it might be just as easy to go to Amazon.com and search for
Windows 7 upgrade. It will be the first result. Go to the results
quickly by pressing the 1 key.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Braille display Issue in Notepad and Perky Duck

2010-09-18 Thread Flor Lynch

Hi jerry,

This may be because every new line - a hard line break, when the enter
key is pressed - is treated as a paragraph break, thus making a new one
begin in cell two or cell three (to conform with the correct brailling
rules), in Notepad and in Perky Duck. If you have the full forty cells
filled in one line, then isn't it likely that there will be a single
space left in cell one of the next braille line to mark the word
separation, which might be important if you have the display refreshing
automatically? (I can't speak to perky duck, not having it.) the
paragraph setting in Outlook and word may be set to two line-spaces
rather than just one. if reading a print line in Notepad of more than
40 characters that wraps, I believe the remainder of the print line will
start over on cell one of the next braille (as it will happen, shorter)
line. the braille line beginning in cell two or three may be quite
correct for beginning a new paragraph in braille. I do have Duxbury
braille Translator, and I know that there are settings available there
to enable beginning a parargraph on cell one.

the same thing happened.
Is there a setting I need to help him activate so the 22 services

  Thank you for any assistance.
