Re: [JAWS-Users] WHAT TO KNOW WHEN SHOPPING FOR A SOUND CARD
Some of the questions that mean most here is what type of out puts do you need if any special, and do you want it in the computer or as a USB device? Most of the USB type have more than enough ports for just about any thing you want to connect to it. About the only thing you may need is a cable to make it easy reach to user. The one thing you need to look at is how much it will handle as in built in ram. A lot of users on this list have either a USB sound card or a USB headset. They can also be used if USB ports are short. personally, I use a wireless logitech headset g930 it comes with everything for use out of box. With the prices of the USB type you can actually go with both if desired. Now as far as jaws goes or just being blind in general, don't mean a thing with sound cards. Because jaws has no spec's for sound cards any will do, its price that works. i will tell you this, Don't just get the cheapest or a off the wall name. Check with google and read some reviews on what your looking at. And another site I found helpful when buying computer parts is YouTube.com Some vids on there will show you working, what comes in box and what they think. At 09:25 PM 10/8/2011, you wrote: Hi, When selecting a sound card, what are the most important things to look for? Creative Labs and Amazon have so many to choose from and, of course, all the numbers that follow the name of the card made me crazy. For over a year I've been experiencing a constant problem of JAWS suddenly giving up the ghost for no apparent reason. Lately, it's not occasional, but more like every minute when I'm reading by word or line. It doesn't happen when in say all mode. It does happen, though, quite often when I'm writing and when I read what I wrote, it's there. I'd like to get a sound card because just maybe the one the computer came with is not strong enough to accommodate JAWS and all the sounds I set up. I'm running JAWS12 latest build and Win7 SP1. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. [JAWS-Users] looking for a sound card
The only card I ever had trouble with was a sound blaster live that worked fine in a windows ME system but spit and sputtered when I installed it in an XP box when I used it for JAWS. It played fine for everything else if memory serves. The fact is there are 3 real tech sound cards, an audagy and no less than 6 USB sound cards in this place and they all work fine for windows, music and JAWS. My Turtle Beach does not work all that well over Skype but it does a nice job for recording some of my audio tutorials. So decide what it is going to be used for the most and shop accordingly. If it is for JAWS then a $15 USB card will do the trick. I always like to have a external card for JAWS since I do so many tandem sessions it makes my world easier as the volume for JAWS is independent from the system sounds and the person on the other end. Re: [JAWS-Users] putting jaws to sleep, what a mess
Sometimes I hit incorrect keys like insert+space bar then I type r for research it. But in error I type s and then jaws goes silent because it is speech off key. If you repeat this key speech goes back on. But it is strange that narrater did not come on either. I use windows+u to launch Narrater but I use XP Pro. But maybe you silenced Jaws by the above key stroke by mistake? Maybe try Insert+spaceBar then type s and then try it again. Do you have NVDA on your PC? Re: [JAWS-Users] putting jaws to sleep, what a mess
Hello Candy, You can start JAWS with default settings, go into the program that you designated JAWS to go to sleep in and make the change in the configuration file. To start JAWS in default mode use the run box by pressing Windows key with R, and then type in JAWS12 /default. There is no space between the word JAWS and the number 12, there is a space after the number 12, and there is no space between the slash and the word default. Press enter key and JAWS starts in default mode with no customized settings. You can then try going into the program that you set to go to sleep when using JAWS (including the JAWS interface) and press your JAWS key with 6 to bring up the settings manager. Type the word sleep into the edit box, tab to the list of results and choose the result that says Sleep mode disable or something similar. Press spacebar to change the setting. Use the Apply button. After using the OK button until the dialog is closed, JAWS should be set to work normally in that program. If your keyboard is a different configuration when you start JAWS in default mode, then you might need to change it temporarily or go into the folder where the JCF file for the given program resides and open it. To find the JAWS Window.JCF file go under All programs, open the JAWS 12 program group, open Explore JAWS, Open Explore My Settings, and check for a JAWS Window.JCF file. If it is not there then go under All Programs, Open the JAWS 12 group, open Explore JAWS, open Explore shared settings, and press J until you find the JAWS Window.JCF file. Try to open it by pressing enter key. If you still have trouble opening the JCF file with your keyboard configuration, use the Open With choice in the right click menu (use shift+f10 to bring up the context menu when focus is on the JCF file name). In the Open With box, choose Notepad. Use tab key to the checkbox that says that you should always use the program to open that type of file and use spacebar to remove the checkmark. Tab to OK and press spacebar. In the JCF file look for the line that says Sleep=1. Change the 1 to 0 and then use CTRL+S to save changes. Close Notepad. You might also check in the explore my settings list for a default.JCF and open it to check to see if the sleep mode was enabled for it. If so, disable it and save changes. Unload JAWS and start it again by using the Run box and typing in JAWS12 followed by an enter key. Take care. Hi By design , if you press the keys for say word twice quickly, JAWS will spell the word. Then if you next use JAWSKey+right or left arrow, JAWS remains in spelling mode and will spell each word you move to. To get back to regular Say Word mode, press the keys for say word once. The problem is that when using insert right arrow, Jaws will read word by word for a few words and then pop into spelling mode for some reason. I am going to start using control right arrow to see if it happens. I have a hearing problem and have always had to at one point or another use insert right arrow to clarify what I am hearing so I have had to do this a lot with previous versions of Jaws. Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem. I have been using windows 7 and jaws 12 along with windows live mail for only a few weeks and so far have noticed it mostly with W L M. Hi. Do you have made any hardware changes, to your system in the past? Jaws is very sencible about such changes. If you have lost a Jaws autthorization key of such reson, than reactivate your Jaws, using youur ILM-code, and you willl get a new licensde key. If your computer have been set into standby or Hibernation, and has been vaked up from this mode, Jaws sometimes has problem's with recognizing the authorization file on the Computer. If this is the problem, than restart the computer, and JAWS should be back in normal mode. Plus it integrates msn, so anyone who's not on fb will appear in the msn section of your contacts, allowing you to use the one app for both methods of communicating. :) if anyone else has used this, it'd be good to hear how the other ap program works. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mike Barbara Sent: Wednesday, 21 September 2011 3:09 AM To: Jaws-Users List Subject: [JAWS-Users] Facebook Application Hi All; I received the information below, from another list for all of you Facebook enthusiasts. Just install it and sign in using your Facebook account information. You'll immediately see all your online and offline friends. You can chat without opening up your browser. It works like a regular instant messaging program. However, you can do Facebook-specific things at the same time, like updating your status. http://www.ftalk.com/ No idea of how accessible it is. so if anyone tries it, please let me know. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 12 reverting to demo mode
hi you can use ILM Authorization Fewer to reactivate it. For example: if your jaws suddenly go to demo mode, to fix the problem: 1. go to start menu 2. choose jaws program groups 3. select tools 4. activate ILM Authorization Fewer 5. wait for some seconds 6. ILM Authorization Fewer then display your ILM authorization on your PC 7. exit the program 8. unload your jaws 9. call your JAWS and now your problem fixed enjoy! - Original Message - From: CrisMunoz54 crismuno...@gmail.com To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Monday, October 10, 2011 3:40 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 12 reverting to demo mode I have that happen from time to time. Also, I find that Jaws loses focus fairly often and I have to do an alt tab to get it straightened out again.
