Is there a radio that you would recommend instead of theirs, and if so, tell

Ok, lets start with selective startup. There's nothing wrong
with using selective startup, that's what I do to keep extra
programs that aren't necessary from loading.

I can't figure out why you said the keyboard wasn't working, but
I can educatedly guess why Jaws wasn't working. I'll bet somehow
you unchecked the REaltech sound manager from loading by
mistake. That will kill sound every time after Windows
loads. So the bottom line, when you go through the startup list,
make sure you know which programs you are unchecking so you don't
dump one that might be system critical, as the sound manager is
for us, and of course, as an anti-virus program is.

As to your second question, your Outlook Express files are stored
under your documents and settings, Username, Local Settings,
application Data, Identities, alphanumeric string, Microsoft,
Outlook Express folder. Unless you have Task and Folder options
set to show hidden files, you won't see these files.

However, if you set up your backup solution to backup your
Documents and Settings folder, it will back up your OE .dbx files as well.

The other type of backup you can use of course is a program that
takes an image of your hard drive and stores it on external
media. The image will restore everything if there is a severe
crash, including the Windows System and all your installed
programs. You don't have to do image files as often, but you
should back up your data in the Documents and Settings folder
more often, as that likely changes on a daily basis.

endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else.

Thanks all!! You guys really helped me on this one.
I've seemed to have gotten the computer working with your help.

To complete, I went in to msconfig and noticed that selective
start was checked. My other options were normal and one other one.

What should be checked?
That computer is XP home.
My second computer is XP pro and when I checked , all 3 options
said checked.

The main computer would only allow one option to be checked.

Another question.
I have, I think, an external hard drive to back up information.
I am able to copy the C drive in to this but, I am not sure how
or if I can copy my e mails from Outlook Express.

When in O E, the options to copy to folders were for folders within O E.

So, how can I back up e mails?

Thanks again for all of the help.

[JAWS-Users] drive remounting program

2012-02-06 Thread David Ferrin
An alert list member just sent me a sweet little program for remounting
drive letters without so much as a reboot, just a simple command line. I
just wrote a batch file and remapped about seven drives on my test machine.
I’ll double check but it looks like it is free to distribute, if that is so
I’ll put it on the server. Just in case it is not I’ll include the link in
this message.
Obviously English is not this guys native language, but he gets his point
across.

Changing a drive letter does not require a reboot of windows.
Personally, I use a command line called remount.exe which will allow me to
type in, or swap drive letters with just a command line.
If I want drive g to be f I will just type remount g: f:
If I want to swap around, I just type in with a -s switch.

You can obtain a copy of remount.exe from
http://www.uwe-sieber.de/files/remount.zip

You can visit the website and see if you can find some of command program as
well here

I actually recommend sending the document to conv...@robobraille.org.
You'll get it back in a few minutes as a textfile attachment. You can
put codes in the subject line to specify a different return file
format.
Alternatively, you can upload the file to www.robobraille.org and
specify the desired file format in the form.

2012-02-06 Thread Ann Byrne

It's e-mail, not an upload. Send it as an attachment to

conv...@robobraille.org

In the subject line put only the format you would like the document
returned in, like text.

Re: [JAWS-Users] PL provide steps to upload a PDF doc at the Robo Braille site

2012-02-06 Thread Dean Martineau
OK, on the page you reach from www.robobraille.org:

1. Press h twice to get to the second heading on the page, Step 1 - Upload
the file. The line below lists the possible file types. Press b from here
to the Browse button and actigate it to be able to navigate to the location
of the file you want to send for conversion.

2. Activate the Upload button. After a moment, a message informing you
that the file was successfully uploaded will appear below that button, and a
heading will appear below that asking you what type of conversion you want.
Of the four radio buttons, choose Document conversion for this example. Of
course, the others are all viable options gtoo.

3. Once a radio button is chosen, two more headings appear below them.
Note that upon choosing the radio button you want, you may be bounced to the
edit field for entering your e-mail address, and you will have to move up to
the options heading. If you chose Document Conversion, the Step 3 - Specify
document conversion options section contains a combo box listing the ten
possible output formats. If you chose an MP3, you would choose the language
and desired speed.

4. Finally, in the Step 4 - Enter email address and submit request section,
follow those instructions.

As Ann stated, all this can be done via e-mail. Send the document to
conv...@robobraille.org and in the subject line put the desired format, loke
doc or txt or epub.

Try just using the Openbook virtual printer.
Open the file with adobe reader, select print and from the list of
printers select freedom import printer.
Openbook will open and run OCR.

Try opening the document in Adobe Reader, even though there is no text, then
print, and select the Freedom Import printer. That will launch OpenBook for

Re: [JAWS-Users] Reading Whole .PDF Document and Convenient OCRFeature

2012-02-06 Thread Ann Marie Medlar

Margaret,
Launch Open book. Press Control+o to open.
tab to file type and type adobe. Or just arrow down to adobe/PDF.
Shift tab back to folder name. I usually have my docs under my documents
but Openbook has its own path. So when on folder name keep hitting the
backspace key until you get to the folder where your PDF file is located.
You might just want to put your file on desktop and keep pressing the
backspace until you get to desktop.
When you see your file name in list view press enter and OpenBook should
begin processing. Hopefully it is readable.

Good luck.

[JAWS-Users] frames

2012-02-06 Thread Miriam Vieni
I should probably know the answer to this but perhaps someone can give me a
quick bit of help. I have a new checking account with a local credit union
and although I've never attempted banking on line before, I thought I'd see
if it is possible to do it with this friendly bank. Aside from my own
issues, I'm not sure that their website is all that accessible because I had
to get telephone help from them with getting registered so that I can log
in. Now I see that paying checks on line is in a frame. So I need to know
how to get into the frame to see what is involved and then leave the frame
when I'm done. Can anyone make a suggestion about getting in and out of the
frame?

Navigate from frame to frame using m, but chances are you can use other
quick keys to get to what you need. There may be a link to add a payee, for
instance. Then your payees may be marked by checkboxes, or edit fields.
Each has its own quick key.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Major issue! Computer freeze.

2012-02-06 Thread rich

I could not find it.
I was in My Docs and opened up my received files and it was empty.
Then, I went to my C drive and found my downloads but the image was not
there.

Any other thoughts on where I could look?
For some reason, I don't think the download went through. I tried it twice.

Thanks.

Try looking in download folder. You have to install it to see it in other
places.

I could not find the program in my docs or programs.
How would I know if I actually downloaded it?

Thanks for the info.
What program do you recommend to take an image for back up?
By the way, when the problem began, my sighted wife said the mouse would
not work as well as the keyboard.
I had not made any changes to the configuration manager prior to the
problem.

Interestingly, after rebooting, Microsoft ran a check disc?
Thanks again.

Ok, lets start with selective startup. There's nothing wrong with
using selective startup, that's what I do to keep extra programs that
aren't necessary from loading.

I can't figure out why you said the keyboard wasn't working, but I can
educatedly guess why Jaws wasn't working. I'll bet somehow you
unchecked the REaltech sound manager from loading by mistake. That
will kill sound every time after Windows loads. So the bottom line,
when you go through the startup list, make sure you know which programs
you are unchecking so you don't dump one that might be system critical,
as the sound manager is for us, and of course, as an anti-virus program
is.

As to your second question, your Outlook Express files are stored under
your documents and settings, Username, Local Settings, application
Data, Identities, alphanumeric string, Microsoft, Outlook Express
folder. Unless you have Task and Folder options set to show hidden
files, you won't see these files.

However, if you set up your backup solution to backup your Documents
and Settings folder, it will back up your OE .dbx files as well.

The other type of backup you can use of course is a program that takes
an image of your hard drive and stores it on external media. The image
will restore everything if there is a severe crash, including the
Windows System and all your installed programs. You don't have to do
image files as often, but you should back up your data in the Documents
and Settings folder more often, as that likely changes on a daily
basis.

Thanks all!! You guys really helped me on this one.
I've seemed to have gotten the computer working with your help.

To complete, I went in to msconfig and noticed that selective start
was checked. My other options were normal and one other one.

What should be checked?
That computer is XP home.
My second computer is XP pro and when I checked , all 3 options said
checked.

The main computer would only allow one option to be checked.

Another question.
I have, I think, an external hard drive to back up information.
I am able to copy the C drive in to this but, I am not sure how or if
I can copy my e mails from Outlook Express.
When in O E, the options to copy to folders were for folders within O
E.

So, how can I back up e mails?

Thanks again for all of the help.

Miriam,

It is my experience that you don't get into and out of a frame. You can
just arrow down the page and you will hear something like FRAME NAME, then
all the stuff in that frame, then end of frame.

You don't have to do anything special to enter it. Just by moving down
with your virtual cursor, you enter and exit it.

Some frames are emtpy so there really isn't anything in them to navigate
to.

You can use the m key to jump around the page by frames, then when you get
to the frame you want, just start arrowing down.
