[JAWS-Users] how to: update firefox

2017-10-30 Thread Kimsan
Hi,

When I use ninite.com to update firefox, it asks if I want to save a binary
file. Not sure what that is. So, since I don't want to deal with something I
know nothing about, how do I update firefox. I'm using v. 44.

[JAWS-Users] J-2018 announcing "text area" instead of reading the command prompt edit box and feedback

2017-10-30 Thread Hareth
Greetings,
Jaws 2018 beta and final, saying "text area" both with command prompt
and power shell interface,
that's with windows10 creators fall edition.
I have to press insert plus B to check the results,
and that reads much more than what I need to hear.
Typing and editing also not spoken.
Any thing I need to know to fix that? Is there something I'm missing?
Or its a known bug.
Help would be much appreciated. I'm using command line a lot, there
for its a problem to deal with the current way jaws 2018 reading it.

Best

Well, the first time you install JAWS you need to authorize it, and to do
that you need the code. I guess if you could get the code some other way,
you could authorize the download. if you install it and don't authorize it,
it will run in 40 minute mode.

Jerry,

Each time you install a major version of JAWS, one of your upgrades will
disappear. If you install JAWS 18, you will be down to 1 upgrade. When you
install JAWS 2018 you will be down to zero upgrades.

If you never install a JAWS version above 17, you will always have two
upgrades available. However you will not get any upgrades beyond JAWS
2018,

because your SMA allows you two upgrades past your current version of JAWS
17. If you want to go beyond JAWS 2018, I recommend you install both JAWS
18
and JAWS 2018, and contact VFO to purchase a new pair of upgrades. You
won't

be able to go beyond JAWS 2018 if you don't purchase any new SMA. And I
suspect that not purchasing new SMA later this year will mean you will pay
big $$$ if/when you finally do upgrade past JAWS 2018.

If this is as clear as mud, call VFO at 800-444-4443 in the U.S. or your
local dealer.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and NVDA

2017-10-30 Thread andy
My girlfriend is a big supporter of NVDA she likes it for the same reasons
you have stated, it seems similar to jaws, it is easy to use and best of
all, it is free.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and NVDA

Hello everyone.

I'm curious to hear from people who use, or have used, both jAWS and NVDA. I
know this is the JAWS users mailing list, and I don't want to start any
arguments over which screen-reader is better or anything like that, but I
feel that this is still a valid topic for discussion here. I'm just curious
to know how others feel about these two products, one of which happens to be
free and open-source; one of which happens to be a commercial product that
is not always available to everyone at all times. Case in point: I recently
had a job interview where a test was required; they could not get jAWS
running on their old test computer system at all, not even the demo version,
so nVDA was my only recourse. Prior to that time, I'd only used NVDA briefly
on an ex-girlfriend's laptop, mostly for playing music. So, all this was
pretty new to me and to say the least, I was very nervous. But it turned out
to be a breeze: NVDA in fact does seem to behave very similar to jAWS, which
I find very interesting.

Now I'm once again in a position where I may have to be using nVDA for work.
So I decided to install it at home and really delve into it; see how it
works. I'm not getting rid of, or abandoning JAWS; it is a good product and,
after all, I paid for it, even if I received a discount to do so because of
my previous employment. So far though, I'm finding that there isn't really
any learning curve at all, or not much of one; it's as though the developers
created the software with JAWS users in mind, and indeed, I suspect that to
be the case.

So, for those of you who use (or have used) both products - what do you find
to be the major differences? I'm guessing they mostly involve specialised
application support, as in for example Microsoft Office, Firefox, Chrome and
so on; I'm aware that FS at least worked in tandem with Microsoft and
Mozilla to develop JAWS support for these applications. So far though I've
used both Outlook (admittedly only Outlook 2010) and Firefox, and although
spoken feedback is somewhat different, both seem to work extremely well with
NVDA.

Again, I'm not looking to replace JAWS. Just curious to know if others have
had similar experiences to mine. Maybe some people don't find NVDA to be a
viable alternative, for whatever reason; if so, definitely pipe up here as
I'm curious to know why.

look in the about menu to find out your current status would be in the 2018

see if the unlock code was transfered to the new version.
it may not realy be there in the about menu item.
maybe you can activate it with your unlock code manually.
i had 1 s m a left.
look in version 18 and it still shows i have one s m a left. in 2018 it says
zero.

I'm currently running JAWS 18 with the September 2017 update.

I got no notification of a later update and the Check For Updates in the
Help menu confirms that I'm running the most current version. But I found
this on the JAWS website:

JAWS 18.0.4350 64-bit English - October 2017

The following is a list of improvements made between the JAWS 18 September
2017 release and the October 2017 update.

list of 3 items

. Resolved a customer reported issue with the 8400 series of Outlook 365
updates where JAWS was not automatically reading the suggested addresses
when

typing in the address fields of a new message. To check your Outlook 365
version, use the JAWS command CTRL+INSERT+V while focused in Outlook.

. Addressed issues where Edge would unexpectedly stop working while
navigating on various pages.

. Added new Research It lookup sources to the French version of JAWS for two
libraries for the blind in France.

list end

I found this only because I was helping a friend set up Edge and her arrows
weren't reading down the page. A JAWS tech told her there was an October
update.

My Edge is reading properly. Should I put the new update in anyway? I plan
to download 2018 but It will probably be a month or two before the Fall
Creator's update finds my computer, so I thought I'd let more technical
people test-drive the 2018 version of JAWS for the next few weeks.

Also, the JAWS tech told my friend, if she understood correctly, that there
is no virtual cursor in Edge. When I've tried to copy material in Edge,
JAWS says, "selection using the virtual cursor is not yet supported in
Edge."

I had assume from this that the virtual cursor is being used.

And my last comment, for those of you running JAWS 2018, are you now able to
select and copy text, or is this still in the works?

Thanks.

typing in the address fields of a new message. To check your Outlook 365

. Addressed issues where Edge would unexpectedly stop working while

. Added new Research It lookup sources to the French version of JAWS for two
libraries for the blind in France.

I found this only because I was helping a friend set up Edge and her arrows

Thanks.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Unable to access list of available networks since
upgrading to Windows 10 Creators Update

Hello all. I ran into an issue with JAWS that rendered me unable to log on
to my hotel's Wi-Fi network at our state's NFB Convention this weekend.

I am running Windows 10 Creators Update with the latest version of Jaws 18.
When I try to access the list of available networks in the system tray with
my laptop, I can't access the list of available networks. In control Panel
in the Network and Settings Center, I can arrow to a link for list of
Available Networks, but when I press enter or spacebar to activate it, Jaws
just says unavailable. I have tried this in Narrator and was eventually able
to connect to my hotel's logon screen after closing JAWS and entering
Control Panel with Narrator Exclusively. However, when I accessed the logon
screen, closed narrator and ran JAWS 18, I discovered that the virtual
cursor wouldn't activate and I couldn't log on to the WIFI network. I've
only noticed this issue since the Creators Update. I also just installed
Windows 2018 and the issue still exists. I called Freedom Scientific
Technical Support and was just advised to upgrade to 2018. The Microsoft
Disability Answer Desk was no help. Is this a bug that could be replicated
and reported to VO?

Thanks.

Chris

Hi Rebecca,

We weren't notified in the usual way about that update, .4350, because it
was a very small update, but Eric Damry of VFO did tell this list that the
update was coming, & what day it would be available. I post all updates &
direct download for them whenever I find out about them, but I can be a
little slow about it being I'm not up to date like all the cool / hip

Anyways, I'm running Windows 7, & selecting / copy text does work with Jaws

Text selection and copy/paste is not yet working in Edge with JAWS. I suggest
using one of the other browsers as your default. Support for Chrome, IE, and
Firefox is much more robust in these with assistive technology today.

FYI, JAWS uses the word "version" to refer to the basic number (such as 17, 18,
now 2018). Periodically "releases" or new "builds" are released, and this is
where you get the four digits following the decimal point.

I'm a long-term JAWS user, but like you, I wait a while to make sure a new

Hello list,

Being new to Jaws after having Window eyes. I was wondering if a CD for
version 2018 would be sent out like new versions of window eyes would be.
Then I have to say after getting used to jaws talking to much, it is as
easy to use as window eyes. Thanks for putting up with us new users.

Re: [JAWS-Users] 2018 CD

2017-10-30 Thread Andy Baracco
You should get one the first time you buy JAWS and if you have an SMA you
should get one each time a new version of JAWS comes out. That original CD
on the jacket will note your authorization code which you will need if you
have a crash and have to reinstall, or if you get a new computer and have to
reinstall, as the SMA upgrade CDs do not note that code. The CD usually
comes several weeks after the release of the new version, so you may opt to
download the new version from the web site. If you do not have a version of
JAWS installed on your machine when you install the downloaded upgrade you
will be prompted to authorize the new install.

The JAWS 2018 DVD shipped in the USA when the SMA posts will be going out in
the mail the end of this week. But as Adrian points out, the build is already
updated on the Download page so for anyone who has downloaded and installed
already, the DVD is something to put aside. No need to install from it.

Dave, we're not putting up with you. It's you who are being gracious after
having been forced to make the switch.
VFO has sent out a CD for every new version of JAWS to present, and I haven't
heard anything different regarding 2018. However, I usually find that by the
time the CD arrives, VFO has already released an update, and I rely on those
updates to fix problems. I'd recommend downloading the current release from the
VFO/FS website.
But either way, don't discard the CD and its container. I believe new users get
an authorization disc or some other item that you will need to keep safe. If
I'm mistaken, I count on others to correct me.

look in the about menu to find out your current status would be in the 2018

see if the unlock code was transfered to the new version.
it may not realy be there in the about menu item.
maybe you can activate it with your unlock code manually.
i had 1 s m a left.
look in version 18 and it still shows i have one s m a left. in 2018 it says
zero.

Re: [JAWS-Users] We Want More JAWS Webinars!

2017-10-30 Thread JM Casey
I think they are quite good, but would be ok with fewer and a somewhat
higher quality of production. What topics would you be interested in,
particularly?

BTW this is a mailing list for jAWS users; I know someone from FS/VFO at
least does read this, but you would probably get better results sending your
feedback directly to them. This would seem like a good topic to discuss here
among the users though. What webinars in particular do people on the list
here enjoy?

I thought the one on Adobe reader was quite helpful setting me straight on a
couple of things, though it was a bit rambly and long, as these things tend
to be (in my opinion).

I am finding that there are some differnces in how my control keys work on
the various Dell laptops that I am currently using at home and work. Given

Yes, Shift+F10 still works, but now Fn+Right Control works as well. It does
not work on the old E6440, but it does work on the new E7440. I still need

However you will not get any upgrades beyond JAWS 2018,
because your SMA allows you two upgrades past your current version of JAWS
17. If you want to go beyond JAWS 2018, I recommend you install both JAWS 18
and JAWS 2018, and contact VFO to purchase a new pair of upgrades. You won't
be able to go beyond JAWS 2018 if you don't purchase any new SMA. And I
suspect that not purchasing new SMA later this year will mean you will pay
big $$$ if/when you finally do upgrade past JAWS 2018.

If this is as clear as mud, call VFO at 800-444-4443 in the U.S. or your
local dealer.

In your settings, do you have Jaws set to differentiate between left and
right pairs of keys?
Go to Jaws search with insert-6, press control-shift-d to open the default
list; then search for differentiate between, and see if that is checked. If
so, then uncheck it so you can use either control key.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS SMA Upgrades Inquiry

2017-10-30 Thread Eric Damery
Look at the about box for JAWS 17 in your JAWS help Menu. If it states you have
SMA 2 remaining, then just download and install JAWS 2018 and it will work now.
Otherwise, choose "update authorization" in your help menu and let it update
your authorization key install on the computer. It should then reflect SMA 2
remaining if that is what you have.

If this is still not clear, the Tech Support people will be happy to assist you
on this.

Eric

You may have a setting you need to change...

1. Insert +6 to open settings center.
2. Press Ctrl+Shift+D to enable default settings.
3. Type the word Keyboard in the edit field.
4. Tab into the list.
5. Arrow down until you hear Keyboard.
6. Right arrow to open this group.
7. Right arrow to open the General group.
8. F6 to jump over to the dialog window.
9. Tab until you hear Differentiate Between Left and Right Paired Keys.
10. Make sure this is unchecked.
11. F6 to go back to the Settings Center List.
12. Tab to OK.
13. Press Enter.

See if that fixes the problem.

but you have to load the setup wizard or what ever its called while the
