Re: [JAWS-Users] Problem with OCR on a TIF file with multiple pages

2018-06-22 Thread Debby
Thank you both for your help! You have given me some ideas of things to try.

Fernando, I can't remember is there a facility in Windows 7 to print to PDF?
I forgot to mention that the hospital is still using windows 7 machines.

I have found that the JAWSS OCR on files is pretty good, but I struggle with
the output from the OCR on screens or windows. I find that trying to read
that output is messy!

Thanks!

Hi Debby,

This is certainly something that FS should inprove in a future major or
minnor release.
As a workaround, however, you could save the file as PDF by using a virtual
printer, such as the one included with Foxit Reader (this software is
comparably accessible as Adobe Reader and easier to create basic things) or
the one built into Windows 10, called Microsoft Print to PDF.
In my experience, JAWS has no problem recognizing a PDF file with multiple
pages.

Hope it helps!

[JAWS-Users] Problem with OCR on a TIF file with multiple pages

2018-06-21 Thread Debby
Hello,

At the hospital where I volunteer faxes are stored in the voice mail system.
There is a program to retrieve the fax images. I can get to the fax images
with JAWS, however the format is tiff. With the "recognize with JAWS" that
normally isn't a problem, however, the faxes are multiple pages. JAWS only
recognizes the first page and stops. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can
get JAWS to OCR all of the pages?

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Have fun!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Stand for keyboard and Focus braille display

2018-04-24 Thread Debby
That metal stand sounds nice. My Focus 80 at work came with a stand. When i use
a braille display that doesn’t have a stand, i use a thin print book to raise
up the keyboard. One Christmas my sister gave me a nice cutting board that a
friend of hers made . It never made it to the kitchen because it made a
perfect stand for a keyboard in back of my Brailliant 64.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Latest build of JAWS

2018-02-27 Thread Debby
I had a similar problem with J2018.1802. I was staying with my parents, and
my mom's computer crashed. It is a windows 7 64-bit machine. After
reinstalling windows 7, when I tried to load the latest version of JAWS
2018, nothing happened. I thought at first that maybe there were win 7 files
missing, but I was able to load the latest version of JAWS 18 with no
trouble. Then I loaded the latest version of JAWS 2018, and it worked. Very
curious!

Hi John,

It means that the PDF is an image of the text and not actual JAWS readable
text. If you would like to read it on the screen with JAWS press the
JAWS-key, The spacebar, then the letter O and finally the letter D. Press
these one right after the other. JAWS will do the OCR on the file and read
it out.

Hope this helps!

Now my focus blue does not display anything in the message list in outlook.
I never had a problem in outlook 2007, but in 2016, the braille display just
isn't displaying anything in the message list. All other areas of the

Just tested and jaws 18.0.4104 also has the same issues.

Any help would be appreciated.

BTW: I am sticking with jaws 16 because it has scripts for the cisco jabber

Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessing an adobe job app.

2017-06-21 Thread Debby
When I opened the document on the web, I looked at the file menu and checked
out the properties. At first I thought it might be a security problem, but
when I compared the properties of your file with one of my own that works, I
ruled out security. I think it was under the "description" tab that I found
the creator and the application that was purported to have been used to
create the file. The application said "pscript5.dll." I googled that and the
suggestion was that it was a driver and the document should be printed to
pdf. Also, somewhere in there it said that the file was not "tagged." I
think that would make reading it with accessibility in mind a bit messy. I
don't really know all of the details about creating pdf files.

I also don't know much about the pro version of adobe; however, at work
before there was convenient OCR, the pro version was really handy because it
could do the OCR on those images we all love so much! Unless you are going
to create PDF's in adobe, I don't think you probably need the pro version,
since convenient OCR is available in JAWS.

If I am wrong about any of this, someone will let us know.

Good luck with the job!

BTW, how were you able to find the creator of the doc, and how did you guess
a step was skipped in the doc creation, and where and how do you get the

Hi Judy,

Have you been able to do anything with this? If not, I did a little
research, and it seems that online, it is not accessible. But if you print
it to pdf, you can actually read the document. I don't think it is fillable,
at least it wasn't in Acrobat DC, but you could either print it and have
someone sighted fill it in, or there is a chance it is fillable using the
full version of Acrobat.

I think the creator of the documents, Scott, skipped a step or two, and that
is why it is not readable online.

If you have any questions, let me know, I'll try to help.

Good luck!

Recruitment Coordinator. When clicking on the link to apply, the Adobe doc
comes up, but not editable, as far as I can see. One of the city employees
in HR says it is fillable online. I'm going to try other browsers to see if
they can pull up an editable adobe doc.

Right now, I have tried this with Internet Explorer, and am using Windows 10
creator edition.

Thanks for any ideas. Here is the link to the job, and on this page is the
link to the app itself.

Thanks once again for your collective wisdom.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessing an adobe job app.

2017-06-21 Thread Debby

Good luck!

2017-06-06 Thread Debby
Arrow to the right, and you will find the attachments. You can use the arrow
keys to go back and forth through the attachments.

If you pressed enter on that "message" thing you would get a copy of your
email.

Take care!

When you shift-tab back once, you'll be in a list of attachments. To open
one, press enter. In my experience, if there are two, it's the second that
you want. If there are more than two, after opening the second, you'll need
to return to the attachments field to open the others, one by one.

If this doesn't work, please post again. It may be you have embedded
attachments, which is another process.

When I'm in the message body and shift-tab back, I hear "message", then if I

I was going over the PCMag.com reviews for -anti-virus programs and
Bitdefender and Casperski have high ratings. Malwarebytes is not so well

Re: [JAWS-Users] getting stuck in submenus in Windows 10

2017-05-18 Thread Debby
Hi Joseph,

I have managed to fix the problem, but the cause is a mystery. I should have
tried this before, but my brain must have been on vacation. I removed my
settings from JAWS 18--I shouldn't have allowed the migration from 17 to
begin with--and reset things the way I like it. JAWS 18 is working normally.
For kicks I went into JAWS 17 and tried to make sure the settings were
exactly like the one I just did for JAWS 18 and still JAWS 17 had the
problem. Later, I may play with it a little more, but for now I have to
quit. The most likely culprit is probably the general settings in the
keyboard manager, but with my little test, I can't prove it.

By the Way my Windows info is:

Version 1511 (OS build 10586.916)

Thanks for your help! I really appreciate you giving this weir mess a try!

Hi,
I suggest calling VFO first, then let's think about getting your Windows 10
updated. But to make sure you're running the version you think you've got,
can you try the following for me:
1. Open Start menu.
2. Type "winver" (without quotes) and press ENTER.
3. Note down the build number you got and reply to me with this information.
In the meantime, I'll forward this query to a list that deals with Windows
10.
Cheers,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws volume changes

2017-03-26 Thread Debby
Good Morning,

I am afraid I don't have much to add except that I had this happen on a
brand new work dell laptop a couple of years ago. It really is annoying! My
IT person played with it for a while and I can't really remember what he
did, but I think he updated drivers or possibly found others. I played with
the volume settings and eventually I got it so that the volume change is
minimal. That is, it still does it, but at least the difference in volume is
not so much and not so jarring.

Good luck!

I am having a problem with the Jaws voices erratically changing in volume. I
am using A Dell XPS 8700 PC and Jaws 18 and eloquence This occurs if I am
typing or reading a document. I went back to Jaws 16 but the result is the
same. Any thoughts as to what could be causing this? Thanks, Tom.

Hi Thomas,

I am no expert, but go to the view menu and then move back and forth until
you find "navigation pane." Press enter on that, and I think you will find
the problem. You want the choice that says "normal." The Short-cut is Alt V
N N. I am using Outlook 2010.

Hope that helps!

Hi,

Well I updated Jaws the other day and all went well and Outlook was running
fine.
However, I now have changed something in Jaws or outlook and Jaws wont read
the list of folders under my mailbox.

I can certainly move to them using the Control Y command, but if I say shift
tab back to the tree list of folders, Jaws doesn't read them but they are
visually showing up and when I review the view options, the folder list has
been ticked.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hello! I use Wordperfect x5 on a window 7 64-bit machine. I have
the same problem you are describing. I found a way around it, and
I hope it works for you. When I load Wordperfect and I can't get
it to work, I simply close it with alt f4 and try again. It will
usually start working on the third or fourth try. I am an old
Wordperfect fan and am disappointed that x5 is a bit fluky, but
if you can get it to work it is usable.

Hi Friends,
I installed WordPerfect 15 on the Win8.1 couple days ago and I
faced a
strange problem. Namely, Jaws15 doesn't recognize the WP
workspace at
all and doesn't speek anything nor send anything to the Braille
display.
But jaws normal works with menus and dialogue boxes or comboboxes
etc. I
tried to change some values of carret and cursor presentation in
the
jaws settings but no luck again. Does anybody have a same
experience and

is there a any medicine for this jaws behavior?
Thanks in advance.

Hi David,

I don't know for sure if the following will help. I say that
because of the message you got when you used the JAWS cursor. But
I used to find that in Outlook 20003 I had to do something
strange to get the link to open. If the link started with http,
I would put the pc cursor on the first t in the url and then
press enter. The link would open as expected. Not sure if this is
a solution for you, but I think it is worth a try.

that at work I have to remote into various computers and end of

Hmm! There goes that theory, although it always happens on my

I don't know what it is, but it just seems as though when you

[JAWS-Users] JAWS 14 update and remote desktop

2012-12-11 Thread Debby Hill
Hi All,

Last Friday morning I installed the JAWS 14 update on my home window 7

installed it on my office xp pro machine. It was a disaster, and the machine

machine. Yesterday when I tried it, the screen would flash to the connection
screen and then return to the screen with the IP address on it. When this
happens there are no error messages, not even a quick on for the eyes of
sighted people to see.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

IE 9 did you load? My experience has been that 64-bit IE 9
doesn't work all that well. I have had no problems with 32-bit IE
9 on my 64-bit machines.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Internet Explorer 9

Hi,
I have yet another question. I have just upgraded to Internet
Explorer 9 and have ran into an issue with Jaws not reading any
buttons on any of the pages I have visited. I am wondering, is
that a

weird issue with IE 9 and Jaws or is it just my computer. Thanks
Jolynn

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 7 login glitch

2012-08-22 Thread Debby Hill

Hi Michelle,

the part of the Win7 sign-on you can't change is the fact that
you hear JAWS start up twice. Win7 has a modular design, so there
is a module for starting up and a module for the rest of the
operating system. I am probably not explaining this correctly,
but it is how I understand it.

Now for your log-on page problem. I am not sure what is going on,
but
1. Have you tried tabbing around to see if you can get to the
password field?
2. Maybe the screen isn't maximized, so you might give that a
try, or
3. Have you tried alt-tab to see if you can focus on the log-on
screen. With that in mind, what does JAWSKeY-t have to say.

I have 2 windows 7 machines, and so far haven't had this problem,
so this is all I can think of.

Ugh, not cool.
So what to do when the dialog box doesn't come into focus? Just
reboot

the computer?

Hi all,

I've finally made the leap from Windows xp to Windows 7, and not
a
moment too soon. The transition has been fairly smooth apart from
the
whole virtual ribbon scene, but I have encountered one glitch I
could

use some guidance on.

I have opted to have set a password for logging onto Windows.
Jaws
will announce itself ready for action after the windows music
sounds,
but won't always focus properly on the password field of the
login
screen. Sometimes it will simply say logon dialog without
allowing
me to type anything into it. Other times it will go straight
there and
all will work perfectly. What strikes me is odd is that Jaws will
then
announce itself as ready a second time once I have managed to log
in
successfully. Is there a setting I should know about to eliminate
this

issue?

Also, just wanted to confirm my suspicion that jaws works
infinitely

better when the user account control is set to 0...is that right?

Many thanks for your help,
Michelle

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows mail menus

2012-07-07 Thread Debby Hill

Hi Andy,

I had this problem the other day in outlook 2010 on a win 7
machine. It turned out that there was a window that wanted me to
sign into outlook. Once I realized it was there and did what it
wanted, I was able to get to the whole ribbon. So maybe something
has popped on the screen and covered part of the menus.

Also, is the screen maximized?

Those are the only two things I could think of. Good luck!!

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Windows mail menus

Hello; I have a problem with my Windows Mail and could do with
any help to put it right.

I appear to have lost some menus...in particular the Tools menu.

When I press the alt key it goes to file and if I press the right
arrow it goes to edit and view but then it says leaving menus, if
I arrow left when resting at the file menu it says leaving menus.
I have also tried pressing alt T but that doesn't work either, I
have looked through the view menu and can't find anything to fix
the problem.

Many thanks

Andy

Re: [JAWS-Users] A PDF question

2012-06-30 Thread Debby Hill

Hi Vicky,

I don't usually try to respond on this list because I can't get
the e-mail to go through. But I just wanted to let you know that
I have installed OpenBook on my work laptop at home without a
scanner. I did it just so I could use the freedom import printer.
It works just fine.

If you have any questions, let me know I'll try to help.

Hi Mike, Can I install open Book on my second computer, where
there is no

scanner?
I may be mistaken in thinking, that the installment program would
look for

the presence of a scanner.

Thanks, Vicky

Hi Again Vicky,

How about installing Openbook on your main computer! You are
allowed to
have it on more than 1 computer, providing the other computer is
also

yours.
Hope this helps a little. Take care.

Hi, I just baut and downloaded a book and 3 documents, only to
find when

I
unpact them, that they were in PDF format.

I have checked ansers that have talked about how to read such a
document

but I have an aditional problem.
My file is on my main computer and my OpenBook software is on
my other
computer and the file will not let me copy it on to a disk to
transfer it.

Is there any way my Jaws 13, with convient OCR can handle
reading an

entire book?

Many thanks for any suggestions! Vicky
