If you're trying to get a table in a PDF document to import into Excel, it's

never been an easy nor automatic process. My approach is to first convert
the PDF file to text and do some cleanup before importing into MS Word. Then

use the Word Text to Table conversion to do the formatting. Then copy that
table and paste into a blank Excel worksheet. Lots of steps, but it gives
you the opportunity to clean up the data and nesting levels.

[JAWS-Users] jaws and printers

2017-06-23 Thread Dwight Johnson
Greetings:

I need to purchase a new printer because the one I have does not make ink
cartridges anymore. The one I have does not communicate with jaws very
well. I hear a sound and there is a message on the screen but I cannot get
jaws to read it, so if I am alone I can't figure out what to do.

Can anyone recommend a printer that works well with jaws? I have windows
8.1 with jaws 14 on a HP Envy.

Thanks so much,

Dwight

sometimes it doesn't. It is very frustrating.

After you press enter, are you then pressing alt-down arrow? Only then would
you down arrow through the five options. At any rate, that's the normal way
of working with a combo box. If it doesn't work, please post again.

Dwight,

They may be hidden, or they may have been merged with an adjacent row.

Either can be accessed via the Ctrl+1 Excel keystroke.

First make sure you're positioned on one of the adjacent rows. Then press
Ctrl+1 and wait for the multi-page dialog to show. This multi-page dialog is

not always instant.

Ctrl+tab to the alignment page and tab until you find the "Merge cells"
checkbox. Uncheck it if necessary and press enter.

If the problem was not resolved, then again press Ctrl+1 and Ctrl+tab until
you find the protection page. Tab there to see if the "Hidden" checkbox is
checked. Uncheck. See if that fixes it.

If this does not provide you with satisfaction, then Google Excel hide rows
to get ideas on that.

Hello Dwight,

To change the format of a cell to a number without a decimal point you can use
CTRL+Shift+Tilde. You might need to use the JAWS pass through command first,
which is the JAWS key with the number 3. (Use the number three that is above
the E and not the one on the number pad). Try it without the pass through
first but my system must be using that keystroke for something else and I need
to use the pass through command. To change the format of a cell to a number
format that uses two decimal places, a thousand separator and a minus sign when
applicable use CTRL+Shift+! (that is the control key with the shift key and the
number 1)

If you need to select a range to apply the formatting to then you can use
CTRL+G and type in the first and last cell to be included in the range
separated by a colon. For example, A7:g12 will select cells starting with a7
and ending with g12 once you press the enter key. You can then use the
keystroke to apply the number format you want. If you want a different
numbering format then use CTRL+1 and use the formatting dialog box to make your
change.

Take care.

Jaws can be set to read the cells in many ways. There are specific settings
in the Quick Settings section.

1. While focused on Excel, press INSERT+V to open the Quick Settings dialog.
2. Arrow down to the beginning of the texdt or use the Search window and type
something like read cell contents.
3. The easiest way is to press the letter T twice. That takes you to a
setting indicating that Jaws should read the cell contents.
4. Now use first letter navigation C, pressed twice.
5. You will be in the settings for cells. Here's the great part of Quick
Settings. If you aren't sure, just highlight a setting, then tab over and
there will be a text box explaining what each setting does. The text
explanations change, depending on which parameter you have highlighted
currently. Before doing anything, look through these.
6. You can try a change, make a note of it and then if you don't like the
results, open up Quick Settings again and try another setting.

Excel settings for Jaws are quite extensive. I suggest you figure out what you
want to do and then try to find the setting that makes Jaws do that. Reading
cell contents is one of those settings. You can also have Jaws read the column
or row settings in Excel but that's for another message.

Dwight,

I don't think that you want Adobe Acrobat and Reader, because Acrobat is not

free. So to get Adobe Reader, go to www.adobe.com, click on downloads,
scroll down to free downloads and click on Adobe reader XI, which is the

Hello folks:

There may be an alternative method for solving the function keys/media
keys behaviour problem without having to resort to the BIOS. This from a
Google article I found

2011 4:19 PM

Suggested Answer

On Windows 7, just open Windows Mobility Center, and toggle Function Key Row

to Function Key instead of Multimedia key. It's as easy as that...

I know this can be done because I did it a few years ago for the lap top I
have at home. I don't recall the details, but I do recall that it involved
the use of Control Panel. The computer I am using here at work right now is
a desktop, so I am working from memory. There may be something equivalent in

other versions of Windows.

I hope this helps some one!

Hello,

Open your program's JAWS Settings Center with JAWSKEY+6, and in the
editfield type detect . There will be about two results. Uncheck the
checkbox for 'detect languages'. It isn't so much that the person is
writing in a foreign language but that JAWS, detecting a different
country's html which gives their email composition foreign language
elements, thinks that they may be.

This check box allows you to enable or disable automatic language
detection. If you select this check box, JAWS attempts to identify the
language of the
current word and then reads it using the appropriate synthesizer voice
for that language. If you clear this check box, JAWS does not change the
voice of
the synthesizer when reading text written in another language. This
check box is selected by default.

you open the Task manager and go to the startup tab.
You can arrow thru the list, once you have an item selected,

Hi Dwight,
On windows 8, unfortunately windows defender doesn't appear in the
notification area, making it harder to check its status. However, if it's
running and it detects problems, then I think you'll get notifications about
this.
You can open windows defender by pressing windows key to go to the start
screen, type all or part of windows defender and press enter.
On the home tab, the status of windows defender is shown, but I can't figure
out how to get Jaws to read it. (but see below).
On the Settings tab there's a check box to indicate whether run-time
protection is switched on.
Back to Windows defender status. You can easily user narrator to read it,
without having to turn Jaws off:
1. Open windows defender. The initial focus in the scan button on the home
tab.
2. Press ctrl+windows Key+U to start narrator.
3. Press caps lock key + right arrow to move to the next item, which is
normally the status, and should read your pc is being monitored and
protected.
4. press ctrl+windows key + U to close narrator.
If you want to you can pin windows defender to the taskbar: when it's window
it open, press windows key + T until you get to the taskbar button for
windows defender, open its context menu, and choose pin this program to the
taskbar.

David.

Dwight,

First, if you have Windows 8, Windows Defender is the anti-virus program
known in earlier versions of Windows as Microsoft Security Essentials.

Do not have Norton anti-virus and Windows Defender running simultaneously;
two anti-virus programs aren't supposed to try to compete with each other.
Use one or the other.

In earlier versions of Windows, Windows Defender was an antimalware program,
not an anti-virus program.

I haven't had experience with windows 7, for I went straight from XP to 8.
When I was looking for a laptop, I found out that one with Windows 8 was
cheper.

At first it is a bit confusing, but you start to get used to it.
As to the touch pad, there is no problem. Windows 8 has a thing called
'mobility center', were you can turn the pad off. I only turn it on when I
need sighted help.

Good luck in your search. Regards,

[JAWS-Users] power to go express

In April I bought an HP laptop with windows 8 and jaws 14. Starting last week,

message goes away and the computer runs smoothly. Any thought on what is going

I hate to keep sounding like a broken record, but IE 8 works just fine
with JAWS 9. The key is that you must have the latest build of JAW 9
which is 2191U. IE 8 will not work with earlier builds of JAWS 9. Maybe
the folks who claim that IE 8 doesn't work with JAWS 9 did not have the
latest build installed. The only JAWS feature that does not work is read
Address Bar (JAWS key-A), which is really no big deal. I have been using
JAWS 9 with IE 8 every day for over two years and have yet to encounter
any serious compatibility issues.

Hi Dwight,

Jaws 9 does not support I.E. 8. although some claim to have them working
fine together, I had a lot of trouble with the combination, so much so I
had to roll back to I.E. 7. I'm afraid that's your only option, besides
upgrading Jaws, of course.

 Hi,
the latest version is Adobe Reader X.
You need to disable protected view first to get it work well with JFW9.
I have boath JFW 9 and 11 installed and It works great.
I'm using the Hebrew and English versions of JAWS.
 Do the following:
 1. Open the edit menu.
 2. go to prefernces .
If you don't like to do it from the menu, Press control+k in the main
window
 of Adobe Reader.
 3. tab until you find a checkbox called enable protected mode at
startup,

 and uncheck it.
Then, press yes to continue after the worning.
 Then, press OK.
 4. Close adobe reader and start it again.
But, if the PDF file has an image and not a text, You will not be able
to

 read it.

 Best regards from Israel,

 Adi Kushnir.

Hi.

Which screen resolution do you have chosen?
If you're using an older 3:4 display, it normally has to be 1024*768 and
32 bit colours.
If you're using a widescreen 16:9 display, it can be approximately
something about 1280*720 and 32 bit colours.

This should work, and remember to say ok to the new settings before time
out.
Hope that this can give you acccess to the information on the screen, by
using the Jaws cursor.

Be also aware of, which background is selected for the desktop e.g.

Hello Everyone:

I am using windows xp with jaws 9. When I go to certain web sites I get a
message that I need adobe flashplayer 8 or better. When I try to install
the flashplayer I get a message that it is already installed. I went to
control panel and then to add/remove programs and tried to remove adobe
flashplayer. Adobe flashplayer 10.1.8 is there but when I try to uninstall
it nothing happens. I get a q button and an I button but clicking on either
of them has no action.

Does anyone have a simple solution? I don't think I can do complicated
ones.

You have to remove IE 8 from Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel to
roll back to IE 7. Performing a System Restore without first removeing IE 8

will not work. You should restore your computer to the state it was in
after IE 8 was installed, and then remove it using Add/Remove Programs. IE
8 will be listed under Windows Internet Explorer. You cannot have two
versions of IE installed at the same time, which is probably why you could
not install IE 7 from aflash drive. There are third-party suites that
contain all versions of IE, but my experience is that they don't work and
may really screw up your computer. I am using IE 8 with JAWS 9 and XP Pro
and have had no problems. Good luck.
