I don't know with defender. It appears that you have a virus. If you really
not comfortable removing it your self I suggest calling the Microsoft
accessibility line. I am sure they can help and insure your machine is clean.
Unfortunately I don't have their number at hand but I am sure others on the
list can provide the number.

I am pretty sure it is coming from Defender. When I open it up, I find the
following message:
Trojan: win 32/dittertag.b severe 2/1/2018

and I can arrow to the right of the message and find a restore button, and a

What information? Are you sure it's actually coming from the Windows Defender

Morning all.
Using Jaws 2018 and Windows 10 on a dell laptop, has anyone ever gotten a
message from “Microsoft” stating something about a virus? The voice on the
message was feminine, and British. And it gave a toll free number to call, or
it will disable my laptop. It said something about sending my information to an
unknown IP address. Unfortunately, mornings for us are at best hectic and I was
not able to determine whether it was credible or not. I also would like to know
of there is a way to get previous notifications regarding issues such as this.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Facebook Question

2018-01-23 Thread Laura Richardson
I use Jaws 18 and m.facebook.com

I press enter on the word profile and then arrow down and press enter on
likes. Then I press the letter H until I hear web pages. This is where all
the pages you have liked are located; you can use up and down arrow and
press enter on any of the pages listed. FYI: If you want to quickly go back
to that list from a web page you clicked on, just press alt + left arrow and
you will be back at that list.

This works well for me because sometimes I forget the exact name of a web
page to type it in search and sometimes I run across FB pages I've liked
that I forgot about.

[JAWS-Users] Windows notifications & updates questions

2018-01-21 Thread Laura Richardson
Hello,

Using a Dell laptop with Windows 10 Creator & Jaws 18 ..

The last two times I've had problems when turning on my computer. When I
turn it on I can't get Jaws to speak. I've had to hold down the power
button to turn the computer off. When I turn it back on Jaws tells me that
Windows couldn't complete an update. I press alt +F4 and that message goes
away and I'm able to use the computer. Since this has happened twice in the
last two days. I have left my computer on since yesterday for fear of not
being able to use it. I live alone and don't have sighted help readily
available and my independence is entirely reliant upon this one machine ..
My ability to read mail, pay bills, send or receive emails, etc. I don't
know how and have never updated anything without sighted help. Today after
I had been away from the computer for a short bit Jaws said "Important
Windows update notification".

How do I find out what the notifications say? If I need to update something
regarding Windows, should I call MS disability for help or is that something
I can do myself without fear of not being able to use the computer if Jaws
won't speak? Also, will it hurt anything to leave the computer on for days
at a time? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi.

In the search box, when you type something in, try pressing the down arrow.
JAWS will then speak the name of a file or folder, if the computer finds
anything.

>From what you just described, your files are all still there, and not
missing. You could use the left and right arrow to see your files. They are
now longer being displayed in a vertical list, and it sounds like that's the
kind of layout you want.
You probably have a different view option set for your documents folder. In
file explorer, hit alt-v, for the view tab of the ribbon. Hit the tab key
until you hear "layout tool-bar". Hit enter on this and you will see a list
of view options. "details" should work. Now on the right side you will see
some columns with file properties, rather than more files, so your up and
down arrows will move vertically through the list.

Hope this makes sense.

No, there should be a alternative captcha. If you can't hear the audio, you
may need to use Google Chrome or Firefox with a plug-in to one of the
captcha solving services. But, if you can hear the audio, it is accessible.

Hi, Laura. I also had to figure out this technology mostly by myself, but
with a great deal of help from people on this and other lists. There are
many others here in our situation. Gerald gave you the right advice. To help
clarify things, Adobe tends to put its PDF reader on the desktop, where it's
labeled "acrobat" on my system. No mention of Adobe, even though it's an
Adobe product.

Adobe Flash is made by the same company but has nothing to do with its PDF
reader. Instead, it's about sound and videos.

So, go to your desktop with either Windows key+d or Windows key+m. then
press the letter a until, I hope, you hear Acrobat. Assuming you do, press
enter. The Adobe Acrobat Reader will open. Then follow Gerald's directions.
It should make a big difference.

clue how to use it and read PDF documents. I'm feeling quite overwhelmed

Another tip. If your PDF documents are being read by Acrobat Reader PC or
Adobe Reader, you should uncheck the box in the Accessibility Set Up
Assistant labeled, "Open PDF documents in the web browser", which may be
checked by default. To do this, launch Acrobat Reader, go to the Edit menu
and scroll all the way down to the Accessibility submenu. Select Set up
Assistant, and on the fifth and final page of the Assistant, tab to this
check box and uncheck it. Opening PDF documents in the browser can
sometimes cause problems with JAWS or the browser itself.

Alt s should allow you to have it come up in pdf so jaws can read it.
For what I've experienced, you do have to close down the internet in those
situations.
What I do is use control enter to open those up, so I goes to anotuerh
window. Then, if you want to cloe it, you can just close that window
without losing the internet. Remember to hit control tab to go to the other

Hello Miriam,

I have Jaws 18 and IE 11 too and also do not have a lot of knowledge
regarding computer technology. That being said, setting up a Facebook
account for me was very easy, done without sighted help, and is quite
accessible. Trying to use the regular Facebook site was a nightmare for me
and quite unaccessible.

I would go to m.facebook.com, enter on create an account, and pretty much
follow the instructions from there. If you need further help don't hesitate
to ask .. Good luck!

[JAWS-Users] Connectivity to server Outlook 2016

2017-10-20 Thread Laura Richardson
Hello,

I'm using Outlook 2016, Jaws 18 & Windows 10 ..

I just noticed today when I open an email account, Jaws is telling me things
about connectivity to my server. I have several email accounts but Jaws
does not give me the same message on each account.

*On one email account, after Jaws told me the name of the email account and
the information of the email message highlighted Jaws said "connectivity to
your server disconnected"; this did not prevent me from sending or receiving
email messages. The next time I went to this email account, after
announcing the email account and highlighted email message information Jaws
said "connectivity to your server trying to connect .. connectivity to
server connected to: Microsoft exchange".

*On a different email account, after Jaws tells me the name of the email
account and the highlighted email message information Jaws says
"connectivity to server connected".

*On the other email account, I don't get any message regarding connectivity
to server.

Does anybody know what this is all about? ..

boom mic will do. Jaws comes through both headphones along with the call.

[JAWS-Users] Strange occurrence turning on the computer

2017-09-19 Thread Laura Richardson
Hello,

Jaws 18 and Windows 10 ..

Normally when I turn the computer on I wait approximately 10 to 20 seconds
and then Jaws will say "Jaws home use" and I'm ready to go.

Yesterday, when I turned the computer on after about 5 or 10 seconds Jaws
said "Jaws for windows, overlay windows zero, overlay windows zero, overlay
windows zero". Then, after another 5 or 10 seconds Jaws said "Jaws home
use" and I was ready to go.

I've had this computer for almost four months and this has never happened.
Has anybody experienced anything like this and is this something to be
concerned about? Thanks for any input.

Hi Laura,

In that case, you probably are actually in a PDF document instead of a web
page. I suppose that because CTRL+D is the hotkey for document properties in
Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.

[JAWS-Users] Blocking an email/Outlook 2016 & Jaws 18

2017-08-29 Thread Laura Richardson
Hello,

I keep receiving a bogus email that I would like to block and have tried to
do so unsuccessfully. The email I want to block is concerning to me because
of where Jaws says it's coming from, the fact that they continue to arrive
in my inbox, and the fact that I cannot block this sender.

I highlighted the email I wanted to block, pressed the applications key, and
went to junk. When I pressed enter on "block this sender" Jaws asked me if
I wanted to do this but it was a different email than what I had highlighted
and the email Jaws was asking me to block was not even in the list to be
highlighted. The only choice it gave me was to click "okay"; there was not
a choice to cancel. Since I did not want to block the email Jaws was
suggesting I tried to get out of this; I tried pressing escape, control + y,
and alt + f4 without success. I had to go to task manager to shut down
Outlook for this to go away and allow me to access my email accounts. The
email I want to block is still there.

How do I block this sender? .. Thank you for any help or suggestions.

I recently had this same issue .. I called MS help to assist. I don't
remember exactly where it is but it is a setting in Outlook that has to do
with the reading payne being checked or unchecked. The number for MS help

Hello listers,

Latest version of jfw and Outlook 2013.

I'm not sure if this is a jwf issue, however, I will still ask.

When I open Outlook, jaws says "unread) when standing on a specific message.
When I navigate away from the message, and return to it, jaws doesn't say
"unread" anymore. It is as if the message has been read, although I didn't
physicaly open the message at all. Is there a way that a message can remain
unread until I open it?

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Morne

[JAWS-Users] Outlook 2016/task message

2017-08-23 Thread Laura Richardson
Hello,

Yesterday evening I turned the computer on and clicked on Outlook 2016 to
check my emails. When I did this Jaws said "2 out of 4 tasks are complete".
I noticed emails that I had opened and read but didn't delete a few hours
earlier were not being shown in my inbox. Also, I was not able to send or
receive any emails. I closed Outlook, waited a short bit, and tried to open
Outlook again. This time everything was fine .. the emails that weren't
being shown were now there and I was able to send and receive emails.

Could somebody please explain what tasks are and why I would get this
message? .. I'm using Windows 10, Jaws 18 & Outlook 2016. Any input is much
appreciated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Learning MS ribbons - virtual or not ......

2017-08-20 Thread Laura Richardson
Hello Mike and everyone who gave input on this subject .. As I'm sure
you've probably figured out I've decided to turn off the virtual ribbons. I
had to uncheck the virtual ribbons in the wizard startup. After that, I
went to quick settings but didn't have to make a change as it was already
unchecked by default. Thanks to everybody's input I believe I've
accomplished turning off the virtual ribbons .. Now the goal is "learn
to navigate the ribbons".

Thank you all so very much!

Hi Laura,

I experimented with checking & unchecking the Virtual Ribbon option from the
Startup Wizard, & I found that either checking or unchecking did anything to
the ribbons in Word or Excel. Also I did the same with the Settings Center
default all applications, & found no change in the program ribbons.

What I did find was that by checking the Virtual Ribbon option in Jaws Quick
Settings this also checked the Virtual Ribbon checkbox in the Settings
Center default all applications. Unchecking it in Settings Center default
all applications did not uncheck it in Jaws Quick Settings. So in short, to
be sure the Virtual Ribbon is checked or unchecked, do it through Jaws Quick
Settings, & save yourself a bunch of time from screwing around with other
ways of doing it!

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Follow these steps to turn off the JAWS virtual ribbon menu feature:

Perform the following steps to use JAWS Settings Center to enable or disable
Virtual Ribbon Menus:
1.First, press INSERT+F2 to activate the Run JAWS Managers list.
2.Press the letter S until you land on the settings center item and press
ENTER to activate it. The settings center dialog box opens with the cursor
in the search edit box.
3.Press CTRL+SHIFT+D to activate the default settings.
4.Type the word "ribbon" (without the quotes).
5.Press the DOWN ARROW to move through the list of search results until you
land on the Use Virtual Ribbon Menu check box.
6. Press the SPACE BAR to uncheck the box to turn off virtual ribbon menus.
Check it again to turn virtual ribbon menus back on.
7.Press TAB to move to the OK button, and activate it.

I would turn off the virtual ribbon. It is handy, but you become dependent
on them and they don't work as well as the original menus, since they don't
use first-letter navigation. I tried them briefly years ago and decided to
buckle down and just learn to use the ribbons.

Right now virtual ribbons are turned on .. Would it be easier and more

learn as much as I can so any feedback and suggestions are greatly
