Even though I have participated on this particular list minimally as a
contributor, I also vote for integrating the list with the existing JAWS
for Windows Users Group on the Groups.io e-mail list/online forum. No
purpose is served by having multiple JAWS user groups. It's one thing, for
instance, to have specialist groups like the JAWS scripting group, but if
one is looking to bring end users together the idea should be reaching the
largest audience in a single place.

For anyone who's curious, send an e-mail message to the Help e-mail address
listed below. You can also visit the group homepage, as Groups.io is a
hybrid service that combines an e-mail interface and also has a web

Personally, I'd love to see the JAWS for Windows, NVDA, and Windows 10 for
Screen Reader Users groups "fused." There is very little that goes on in
any one of them that doesn't have partial or total cross-over interest for
the other. In addition, Groups.io gives you an exquisite level of control
over just what e-mail messages you will get from any group of which you're

I am considering moving the list over to groups IO as I understand they seem to
have less problems of being bounced by various internet providers. Over the
years and especially lately we have lost a number of good members since their
providers will not allow messages from this domain to get to subscribers, and
as such they bounce and get removed by the server. I can’t even contact these
people privately since my email address is tied to this domain.

I have to bring my people up to date on groups IO next, the good thing it is a
lot easier to figure out than Mailman. It is almost 10 years since the last
move and with luck this will be the last. I do not know how much longer I will
keep running this beast, but believe it or not in October it will be 13 years.
Bob and I never figured on it lasting this long, There is obviously a need
which is the reason for keeping it.

Hi Takes,
First of all I went and look at the web page you suggested. I believe you
are using a version of Skype for the desktop computer. The scrips the way I
understand it is for Skype UWP which I believe is different. I am using the
Classic Skype version 7 and you have version 8. The scrips he has if for
Skype version UWP 12. So if someone can correct me if I am wrong cause I
might not understand it. I do not understand that there is more than one
version of Skype. So like I said if someone can explain this I would really
appreciate it as I do not want to download the wrong Skype version or the
wrong scrips.

Hi Ed/all,
The skype version I got is 8.25. Judging from experience with my other
computer at my university base at Ioannina, I would say, yes the scripts are
useful. However, I encountered a problem here. If you want to start a video
call with focus on a certain contact, the command contrl-shift-k got me into
a place markers window rather than begin the video call. I am not sure if
this is a jaws window, but I do not think so. On my other computer, the
shortcut worked fine. I suspect it must be some setting. The audio call
shortcut contrl-shift-p worked correctly.

Hi Miriam,
Bring up the Jaws dialog box by pressing alt+tab. Now I am doing this from
memory. Press the alt key and arrow left or right to option then down to
basic. Press enter on Basic. Now another dialog box comes up. Tab until you
hear "run Jaws from system tray. " Press the space bar to check this. Now
tab to the ok button and press enter. Now when you restart your computer you
will not have the Jaws dialog box when you do the alt + tab key.

Jaws 2018 began having terrible problems yesterday so I called VFO this

Now it's just another extra window, along with Magic, that gets in my way. I
have win7 and I E 11. What lovely convenient thing did all the people who
helped me do, that kept the window out of my way? By the way, thank Goodness
Jaws is working again, but it still has continual problems like periodically
saying, "lost focus", and alt tabbing as it tells me to do, won't help. I
have to quit Jaws and start it again.

temperature and JAWS

Hey everyone.

So, I am running an AMD with six processors rated at, apparently, around
3500 MHZ. My system has 8 GB of Ram and is running Windows 10, 1803, and
JAWS 18. My preferred voice is the premium Daniel Vocalizer voice. Yes,
these specs are all relevant to the topic.

For some time now, I have noticed a certain tendency of my system to lag, or
lock up, for several seconds at a time. This only seems to happen when JAWS
is running. I'm aware that my choice to use this synth does negatively
affect JAWS response time, even on this reasonably fast system. Anyway, the
"freezes" seem to affect some programmes more than others, but perhaps
particularly Firefox and MS Office products. Sometimes, alt-tabbing between
open windows seems rather sluggish.

Well, today I ran a utility from a company called Resplendent Software
called WhySoSlow. It's basically one of dozens of diagnostic software tools
available, that measures your computer's performance by calculating various
factors. It measures your CPU speed, memory load, and the temperature of
your CPUs using the sensors that modern PCs have. The system was running at
a cool 20-something celsius. It was also running at less than half its
advertised clockspeed, the programme informed me, and suggested that my CPUs
were being "throttled" to conserve power.

Now, I'm aware that some of these third party utilities measure specs in
weird ways, or make strange and not always advisable recommendations. I've
completely gone off using registry cleaners or any such tools for this
reason. I'm also aware that modern CPUs can "clock up" when the load on them
becomes particularly intensive, but I don't know how well Windows for
instance actually manages this feature. However, I decided to try a little
experiment. I remembered fiddling a bit with the power settings in Windows
10 previously, but not to any great extent - mostly just to prevent my
computer from "going to sleep" when left unattended. In the "power plan"
settings within power options, I adjusted the power plan from "balanced", to
"optimise for performance", to see if it would make a difference.

I then ran WhySoSlow again. My computer is now operating at peak processor
speed, all of the time. I suppose it's also using a hell of a lot more
power, which might not be a good thing. It's also not "running cool"
anymore. In fact, the CPU temperature has doubled all across the board,
reaching as high as 65 C, according to this programme (even higher according
to the coretemp utility).

However - JAWS is now behaving much more responsively. I haven't had any
freezes. Alt-tab cycles between programmes nearly instantaneously, and
Firefox seems much faster.

I don't really have a question for the list. I just thought this was kind of
an interesting thing to share, and wondered if anyone else had observed
anything similar. It is a fact that with my current setup I am normally at a
speed disadvantage when placed against sighted users. This is, I believe, in
part because JAWS is somewhat resource-intensive, especially using this type
of synthesiser (yes, I have considered switching back to Eloquence). I'm not
sure if I ought to keep my setup this way. I don't particularly want a
really high power bill and I don't want my computer to overheat, though in
theory the automatic cutoffs should engage before anything really bad
happens. I actually think it's nice that Windows includes power saving
features, but not necessarily at the expense of system performance.

Re: [JAWS-Users] I E 11

2018-06-17 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi Miriam,
Here are my instructions on how to reset IE 11. I would give this a try.

How to reset IE 11:
I would recommend re setting IE. Here are the steps to do that.
1. Open IE
2. Press alt + T for tools menu.
3. Press up arrow once and you should be on options. Press the enter key.
4. Press shift + Tab and you should hear General.
5. Press the right arrow key until you hear advance.
6. Tab until you hear reset button.
7. Press enter on the reset button.
8. A dialog box will come up. Press tab once and you will hear something
about checking this box to delete personal information. Press
the spacebar here to check this check box.
9. Tab twice to the reset button and press the spacebar.
Wait a few minutes then close IE and reopen it. Now it should work like new.

Note: checking the box about removing personal information will not remove
your favorites in IE.

I use the alt + A when you are on the website you want to add to your

Can someone please, once again, explain how to organize my favorites in I E

precisely what do I do to add the website? There's a button for new folder.
What does that mean?

Hi Fred,
If you keep shift + Tab do you ever get to the folders? If I shift + Tab I
get those same search fields you get but if I do it again and again I end up
back at the inbox. I am wondering if some how you closed the folder view.
You might need to have a sighted person look and see if your folder list is
there on the left side.
Let me know what you find out.

Fred, don't shift-tab from the inbox, but from the inbox's message list. In
fact, when you're at the inbox folder, that's where you want to be.

For the record, it doesn't matter which folder has focus, so long as you're
in the folders list.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Another issue on which Jaws is starting

2018-05-24 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi Mike,
Thanks for the info. I did go to the area you were talking about and Jaws
2018 was checked. I seem to have got both my computers to startup on Jaws
2018 but I could not get Jaws 2018 to load with using the hotkey. Never had
this issue in my life. Always just went into the icon under properties and
put it the hotkey after installing the latest Jaws update. Well the guy from
FS told me to delete the hotkey then press enter. Then go back into
properties and go to hotkeys and press ctrl + alt + J then press enter. I
always just press J and it put everything in the hotkey field the ctrl + alt
+ J. So doing it his way worked on both my computers. So I don't know why it
did not work the way I use to do it for many years. I guess he taught an old
dog a new trick.

Howdy Mr. Ed,

See if doing the steps below will get J2018 to start with the computer as
the default version of Jaws.
1. Open the control panel and navigate to the Ease of Access center and
press enter. If you press, Windows key + R, to open the Run dialogue and
type, control panel, and press enter, this will put you in the control
panel.

2. In the Ease of Access Center, tab to, Use the computer without a display
link, and press enter.

3. Now tab to the installed versions of Jaws, and check the version you want

to start with the computer, now Apply and Okay your way out.
Hope this helps.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws hotkey loads my old Jaws 18

2018-05-23 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi All,

I have two computers running W10 and latest Jaws 2018. I have changed the
Jaws hotkey on both computers back to ctrl + alt + J on the Jaws 2018 and
have check on my Jaws 18 and it has none in the hotkey field. Now when I
turn Jaws off and press the hotkey it starts Jaws 18 instead of Jaws 2018
even though I do not have a hotkey in Jaws 18. This is doing the same thing
on both my computers. The reason I notice this was after installing the
latest May update to Jaws I reset the hotkey and tried it and figured out it
was starting Jaws 18 instead of Jaws 2018. Does anyone know why this is
happening on both my computers? Does anyone know how to correct this or is
this happening on some ones else computer?

Hi,
I had to set the setting in Jaws to stop it from saying blank, blank all the
time. Here below is how I did it. This came from Mike B. So if you can't figure
it out blame him. LOL
Mr. Ed
How to make Jaws stop saying blank:

Try the following:
If you want nothing said instead of blank in all applications try the
following:

1. Open the Settings Center insert + 6, then press, control, shift, + D, to
open Settings Center default all applications.
2. Arrow down to, punctuation closed..., right arrow to open, down arrow to,
customize punctuation, & press the spacebar to open. Make sure you press
the spacebar to open & not enter. Pressing enter will close the Settings Center.
3. Tab to the Advanced button & press spacebar to open. The first item in the
list will be, blank, so tab 1 time to, edit description button, & press the
spacebar to open. The word, blank, will be in this edit field.
Delete the word, blank, put a space with the spacebar, & press enter.
4. Tab to okay, press the spacebar, tab to okay, press the spacebar, tab to
apply, press the spacebar, tab to okay, press the spacebar to save your changes
& close the Settings Center.

If you don't want this in all applications, open the desired applications
individually & use the above steps in each application. HTH

First, make sure your screen is maximized. As for the Jaws cursor, someone
that uses Windows 10 as their primary system will be able to answer better than
myself, but with my limited experience using Jaws with Windows 10 the Jaws
cursor can't be used the way it could be used with Windows 7 or XP. It seems
that the touch cursor is being used more & more often in Windows 10, but I

Thanks for the explanation but my question is then whether the onboard display

I use most of the time the jaws cursor just says “blank, blank, blank”. So, is
this caused by the display which is too old or the onboard sound card. I shall

Hi Justin,

First my non computer lingo crap explanation. Running Windows 7 & 10 Pro 64
bit, with Jaws 16 thru J2018:
I will use this particular example with System Restore. If you go into System
Restore, there's a checkbox that you need to check in order to see more restore
points than 1 or 2. If I have my screen resolution set very high, I can't find
this checkbox, but if I lower the resolution I can find it using the Jaws
cursor. I know my settings are different than others, so people please don't
start flooding the list with comparisons because we all have various
experiences that others call hogwash, & I'm not trying to argue with anyone,
only stating my personal experiences.

Simple explanation from the internet:

It is usually quoted as width × height, with the units in pixels: for example,
"1024 × 768" means the width is 1024 pixels and the height is 768 pixels.
This example would normally be spoken as "ten twenty-four by seven sixty-eight"
or "ten twenty-four by seven six eight".

The most important thing is not the monitor size, but its ability to display
the higher resolution images. The higher you set the resolution, the smaller
the images on the screen will be, and there comes a point at which the text on
the screen becomes so small it's not readable. On a larger monitor it is
possible to push the resolution very high indeed, but if that monitor's pixel
density is not up to par, you won't get the maximum possible resolution before
the image becomes unreadable. In many cases the monitor will not display
anything at all, if you tell Windows to use a resolution the monitor cannot
handle.
In other words, don't expect miracles out of a cheap monitor. When it comes to
high-definition displays, you definitely get

sometimes closing and reopening Outlook seems to stimulate it into
wakefulness again. As for messages reaching this list, once in a while my
post arrives almost immediately, but usually it takes a while, even an hour
or more. I believe the list's moderators have talked about this, and it's
undoubtedly a function of ISP servers.

Dave's response to your query adds a new wrinkle.

I realize this doesn't directly address the problems you've only recently

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Sluggish Outlook

Hi Everyone,

I have JAWS 13, Windows 7 Home Edition and Outlook 14.

In the past few weeks, it seems that my Outlook program has become very
sluggish in receiving my new e-mails. When I would open up my laptop in the
morning and press F-9, to receive my new e-mail's and press Control & the
home key all my new unread e-mail's would pop up instantly.

In the past couple of weeks, when I do the procedure mentioned above, no new
e-mails would pop up. It now takes a very long time and pressing many keys
to try and receive my new e-mails.

I also noticed, that if I send myself a test e-mail it takes a very long
time for my test e-mail to appear on my list. In the past, as soon as I
would press the F-9 key, I would hear the ping and the test e-mail would be
on the top of my e-mails instantly.

The only difference that I see with my outlook program is that now when I
press the insert key and the page down key Jaws says, the number of e-mails
I have, the number of unread e-mails and this is a new addition in the past
couple of weeks, it says receive/send and of course at the end it says the
usual 10%.

Could this new addition of Send/Receive cause the problem in my Outlook
becoming so sluggish? I do not know what I may have pressed to cause this
problem. Can anyone give me a detailed fix to avoid this sluggish Outlook
problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Mike,

Two-part answer. First, you'll find color options in the font dialog, which
you get to with either control-shift-f or control-d. both work.

Second, I've noticed the same unlikely color scheme is shown in my Word 2016
documents, but what is being printed is black on white. I keep meaning to
find out why this is, but I keep forgetting to.

[JAWS-Users] What version of Skype is accessible?

2018-02-26 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi All,

I am using Skype version 7.40.104 on my desktop computer with the latest
Jaws and W10. In the last week my Skype when I have been chatting it will
close the program. Then I have to reopen it and then I can chat for a while
and then it will close all on its own. Then I have to restart Skype again.
This just started happening last week after the Jaws update. I even turn off
Jaws and Skype still closed on its own. So I don't think it is Jaws. Anyone
having this issue? I had no issues with Skype before last week. Now I went
to check for updates and it says my Skype is up to date but there is a newer
version available. I don't know what version this new one is and if it is
accessible. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Latest Jaws and IE 11

2018-02-22 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi,
The latest Jaws update seem to be working just fine with IE to me on two
computers. Maybe you need to reset your IE. Here below are the steps to reset
IE.
Press tab once and you will hear something about
checking this box to delete personal information. Press the
spacebar here to check this check box.
9. Tab twice to the reset button and press the spacebar.
Wait a few minutes then close IE and reopen it. Now it should work like new.
Note: checking the box about removing personal information will not remove your
favorites in IE.

Hi,

So far, I have not found this to be the case. I have given up on Fusion for

at the logon screen. I get a "Comm Initialization Error", which is supposed
to to be fixed in an update coming out next month.

For now, I am running JAWS and ZoomText separately. Even running it this
way, the latest ZoomText crashes on average twice a day. Sometimes I have
to reboot to get it started again, and sometimes I can just restart
ZoomText. I am hoping the next update will also fix this issue.

Do you have issues with ZoomText crashing? I am on Windows 7, 64-bit.

Hi All,

As you already know, when you press Windows+Insert+f4, Jaws generates an
error report file. The root folder where Jaws error reports are stored is
c:\users\YourUserName\App Data\Roaming\Freedom Scientific\Reports\jfw. The
thing to be aware of however, is that the location within this folder where
a particular report is stored will vary based on whether or not you chose to
have Jaws send that report to Freedom scientific. This behavior can be
configured in settings center by changing the error reporting option. Any
reports that Jaws has already sent to Freedom Scientific will be placed in
the Sent folder. If you have error reporting set to automatically send, then
all your reports will appear here. Any reports that have yet to be sent, or
that you have chosen not to send will be placed in a folder called User
Hold. Regardless of which folder the report is saved in, it will be a file
with a .cab extension, and its name will look something like this:
jfw2018.1801.18_887.cab.

In Settings Center the option to change how you want these error reports
delivered or not is in the, Miscellaneous, heading, & it's #13 of 13.

Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.

Shift-tab takes you from the message list to the folders list, while tab

Re: [JAWS-Users] making a rule

2017-12-25 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi Patti,
Here is step by step how to do it the easy way.
How to create a new folder in Outlook 2010 and 2016 by Jim and Ed
Here is how to create a folder and make emails go into a certain folder in
outlook.
This is just the simplest way I have seen to make a folder and cause the
directed emails to go into it.
Using Outlook 2016or 2010 and Jaws.
For example, making a folder for the Jaws users list or making a folder for
the Windows 10 and Jaws Yahoo group.
1. Be on the email account you wish to add a folder to.
For example: ***outlook.com, the *** standing for your name followed by
the email address.
Highlight that account folder, press the applications key while on it.
2. Go down to: New Folder... press enter.
3. Type in the folder name, press enter.
The new folder is created.
4. Go into the inbox of the account you have added the new folder to.
5. Arrow down and highlight the email you wish to put into this folder.
For example: Jaws users list or the Windows 10 and Jaws list.
6. Press the applications key.
7. Arrow down to Rules sub menu, press the right arrow key one time.
8. Press enter on: Always move messages from***followed by the name of the
group or person for this folder.
9. Arrow up and down through the list of folders in this tree view, find the
new folder, press enter.
10. All the emails for now on that you have selected, either a list, group,
or personal email, from these choices will always go into this new folder.
Remember while in the tree view of folders, right arrow key, expands a
folder account, and left arrow closes the list of folders for that account.
This also works in Outlook 2010.
This is a much easier way of doing rules for the outlook email client.
Good luck...

Hey Gang,

I'm running J18, MS word 2010, and windows 10 creator.

I've been trying to create a rule for hours, and I give up, because I don't
know what I'm doing wrong after step 13. Here is what I did.

Can I please get help?

Thanks Patti

First I create the folder,

Next we need to assign a rule/filter to the newly created folder, By doing
the following;

1, highlight a message which you wish to create a folder for, Example; One
of the messages from this group. )JAWS-Users)

2, press applications key, up arrow and enter on, Rules sub-menu, right
arrow to open.

Another way to do this is:

Press applications key, press the letter "s"

And then press the letter "u", which will directly place you into the
message wizard.

3, Here you will see the following screen;

Always Move Messages From:

Always Move Messages To:

Create Rule...

Manage Rules & Alerts...

you now need to down arrow and enter on, create rule

Note, as I indicated, if you use the shortcuts, the letter "s"&"u" no need
to arrow anywhere, since you're in the message rule wizard.

4, you will now see a screen;

What you are experiencing is not VFO's hoped for result. I had been
planning to switch from MAGic & JAWS to Fusion next month.
6 or 7 years ago I was using Zoomtext and began using JAWS at that time but
had to give it up as the two programs fought with each other. Freedom
Scientific told me at the time that all my problems would be solved if I
ditched Zoomtext and went to MAGic. My problems were far less with MAGic.
I may have to think about my decision to switch to Fusion.

Hi Mauricio,

Thanks for your reply. I also mostly use JAWS, but do have a very small

I installed Fusion last weekend, and for a day or so, it seemed to work ok
except that ZoomText didn't appear to be tracking as I was typing text,

Then JAWS started saying something different from the keys I would press,
such as control-alt-tab when I pressed alt-tab. Also, it would double speak
the letters I was typing, i.e. saying "A A" when I typed an "A".

For now I am running the components of Fusion, JAWS 18 and ZoomText 11,
together, but as the separate programs, not the Fusion program. If I try to
run fusion, not only do I have the keyboard issues I described, but it
becomes so slow as to be unusable.

My understanding was that Fusion was a combination of JAWS 18 and Zoomtext
11, so I don't understand why running the two individual programs together
works, but if I run Fusion, it is not working correctly.

is muted by the incoming ringer when ever I get a call and I'm unable to
answer it. I've tried going into my sound settings and telling windows to
do nothing under the communications settings but still that hasn't helped.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks

Debbie

Re: [JAWS-Users] Internet Explorer or Jaws?

2017-12-15 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi Tom,
Try resetting your IE. Here are the instructions below.

I like a lot of people have been having trouble With IE and
Jaws. This evening I fired up an old HP PC that I picked up for $100 a while
back. It had a fresh install of the latest Windows 7, IE 11 and Jaws
version 15. It works like a charm on the Internet, no crashing like my Dell
PC with the same configuration except for Jaws witch is Jaws 2018. I will
have to use it for a while but it looks to me like the problem I have been
having is Jaws 2018. Tom

Hi All,

We are continuing to have problems with logging into the Windows10 Dell 7440
test machine at work. Frequently JAWS appears to be clipped when it
initially launches prior to the login screen. When this happens, JAWS does
not come back until after the user has logged in and they are on the
desktop. So one thing I am asking that IT look at is the launch order. Am
I barking up an empty tree? Is there a way to change this order?

I've been attempting to use Control+Windows+Enter to turn on Narrator at the
login screen, but it will not launch.

In addition, sometimes BitLocker comes up and wants some type of action from
the user. Besides figuring out what is triggering what now appears to be a
random launching of BitLocker, I am looking for any tips on how a JAWS user
can get through BitLocker when it does come up. I'm guessing that there is
not a solution.

Thanks,

Annette

Hi Fred,
I use to use those same commands to send a web page or link. I tried it a
few times and it is not working. Something must have broken that feature.
What you can do when you are on the web page and you want to send it to
someone just do a aalt + D to highlight the link. Then do a ctrl + C to copy
the link to the clip board. Then open your email client and paste the link
in the body of the email and send it to the person you want. I know that is
not as easy as it was before but that is the only way I know to do this at
this time.

If so, this should open whatever e-mail client you are using. This works
fine for me with Windows 10, Firefox ESR 52 and MS Outlook 2010. They all
play nice together. Maybe check your applications in your browser. You
should have one for "e-mail. Make sure it's something you actually have set

When Entering E-mail Addresses Into A New E-mail

Tom,

I know of two ways to get Outlook up in safe mode.

You can use the Windows run command and type:
outlook.exe /safe

Here is what you want to do to keep opening it in safe mode by creating a
shortcut:

You can also create a new shortcut to outlook.exe and add the /safe switch;

First, determine the location of outlook.exe on your system. In general
you'll find it under;

  a.. 32-bit version of Windows
  C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office
  b.. 64-bit version of Windows
  C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office If you
can't find it, do a search for outlook.exe or use OutlookTools (free)
instead.

Once you've found outlook.exe we create a shortcut to it with the /safe
switch to prevent Outlook from opening an extra window each time you click
the shortcut or use your keyboard shortcut.

1.. Right click on an empty space on your Desktop and choose New->
Shortcut
2.. Type the path to outlook.exe between quotes or browse to its location
via the Browse. button
3.. Type a space behind that and /safe
4.. The entire line should now look like this (example is for a 32-bit
version of Outlook 2010 on a 64-bit version of Windows);
  "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\OUTLOOK.EXE" /safe
  5.. Click Next
6.. Name your shortcut for instance: Outlook Safe Mode
  7.. Click Finish

Updated

Hi all!
I will paste, in this email, my new text tutorial I did on Using the Chrome
Browser.
It is totally updated.
I tell you each key command I press, and what JAWS says.
You can read this tutorial, and repeat what I do on your computer.
I take you through all of the settings of Chrome, and tell you how to
customize it to your liking.
The tutorial will be pasted right into this message below.
You can read the tutorial right below.
Here is the tutorial on using Chrome!
Tutorial for Using the Google Chrome Browser By David Moore This tutorial
will be done with the latest update of Chrome.
I will also use JAWS 18, JAWS 2018, and NVDA 2017.4for this tutorial,
because they all work the same in Chrome.
Finally, I will use Windows 10 Creators Update latest public build.
I will assume that you have downloaded and installed Chrome.
There should be a shortcut on your desktop.

Section One:
Launching Chrome:
One way to Launch Chrome, is to press the Windows key or CTRL+Escape and
type Chrome in the search edit field, and press enter when you hear JAWS say
Chrome.
However, since you have already downloaded Chrome, You will have a shortcut
icon on your desktop.
So next, find the shortcut for Chrome on your desktop, and press enter to
open Chrome.
The short cut will actually say Google Chrome, so press G to find the Google
Chrome icon on your desktop.
The first very important step, is to press Windows+up arrow to maximise the
window. Chrome often opens with the window not maximise, and you will get
undesirable results.

Section Two:
Bringing up a web site.
Press CTRL+L or Alt+D
and type the following:
www.freedomscientific.com
The Freedom Scientific web site comes up very quickly.
All navigation commands like: H for heading, E for edit field, C for combo
box, and so on all work just the same in Chrome.

Section Three:
The Virticle Chrome menu:
I will press Alt+F.
The Chrome menu is open.
This is a very large virticle menu that you just keep pressing up and down
arrow through.
I will press insert+up arrow to hear the first option in this menu.
New Tab, CTRL+T.
You can press that command right from the web site you are on.
New Window, CTRL+N
You can press these commands right from your web page, instead of coming
here.
New incognito Window.
History sub menu.
I will press right arrow here to see what is in this sub menu!
History, CTRL+H
So, there is a key command for reading your history.
You can read a few sites you were on right here.
I will press left arrow to close this history sub menu.
Downloads, CTRL+J
There is the command for opening your downloads you have downloaded with
Chrome.
Next, the important Bookmarks sub menu.
I will press right arrow, to open this.
I hear, bookmark this page, CTRL+D
That command will bookmark the page you are reading.
Next down arrow, says show bookmarks bar, CTRL+Shift+B That command, will
show your bookmarks on your Chrome browser for all to see. I do not want
that.
Here is the important one.
manage bookmarks
The command is, CTRL+Shift+O
In here, you can organize your bookmarks into folders, see the bookmarks you
have imported from different browsers, and very importantly, you can
download, to your computer, an HTML file of all of your bookmarks in Chrome.
On your computer, you can press enter on this file, after it downloads, and
a page will show up in Chrome with a list of all bookmarks you have saved in
Chrome. This is an awesome way to download all of your bookmarks right to
your computer, so you can back them up.
That is all for manage bookmarks.
Next, I hear import bookmarks and settings.
press enter on this, and you can import all bookmarks and settings from IE,
and Firefox, right into Google Chrome, and they will be in their
corresponding folders.
Now, I hear all of my saved bookmarks as I continue to arrow down.
Very important!
Sometimes, when I open that bookmarks sub menu, I do not land on the choices
I mension here, but instead, I start hearing my saved bookmarks. If this
happens, I press up arrow a few times, and it gets me to these choices.
Keep in mind, that many of these choices, like bookmark manager, have key
commands, so you do not have to come to this bookmarks sub menu at all. You
only need to come here most of the time, to arrow through your saved
bookmarks, and enter on the desired one.
To save a web site as a bookmark,
Just press CTRL+D and press enter, and your bookmark is saved.
I will now press left arrow, to close the Bookmarks sub menu!
I will continue to down arrow through this virticle Chrome menu that we
entered by just pressing alt.
The next few are very self explanatory.
The next one I will mension

Hi,

As far as I know, when reading something in Microsoft Outlook (not to be
confused with Outlook.com) the classic keystroke for find actually forwards
the current message or item, so you have to press F4 instead.
In any case, Find Next command is F3.

Hope it helps!

Two observations.
First, this was by far the fastest installation of a new JAWS version that
I've ever experienced.
Second, I selected the "merge" option during the process. After rebooting to
finish the process, JAWS came up with several problems. One was reversion to
Eloquence instead of my preferred synthesizer. Another was that JAWS wasn't
in my system tray, even though that selection was checked in the JAWS
"Basics" dialog. However, a second reboot appears to have fixed both
problems.

[JAWS-Users] Question on Jaws 2018

2017-10-31 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi All,

I have a friend that ask this question on another group. I will post it
below. If you can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Mr. Ed

I installed jaws 2018, and hit the button where it asks if you want to
import your old settings. I did that and most of them were imported.

Now it's putting "block quote" and "block quote end" messages in my web
pages and such. It's also saying stuff like list of one item which is,
truthfully useless and it's been so long since I've gotten this that I don't
remember how to fix it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] what is the best email client when using windows ten?

Hi Jim,
I personally like the Outlook mail clients. I believe they are the easiest
to use and move around with shortcut keys. The Mail app in my opinion you
have to do a lot of tabbing to get around the app. Also in Outlook it is
easy to configure folders to have group emails go into their own folder.
That is my personal opinion.

Spoke to Microsoft accessibility who said there is no way to tell if the

They said the only way to tell is when the machine prompts you to restart.

Wondering if this is correct or if I haven't started the download yet.

Here is the actual Windows command to clear the clipboard manually. This
command can be executed in Run dialog field, command prompt, or create a
shortcut
on desktop with same command so that can be used whenever you wanted to
clear clipboard manually on
Windows 10.

Right click on the empty space on desktop, then select new Shortcut.
Using jaws,
Desktop,
Ctrl+spacebar to unselect icons,
Now, use applications key, choose new sub menu, and again choose new
shortcut,

shortcut in Windows 10

Type below command on the location of the items of shortcut as below.

cmd /c "echo off | clip"

On the next screen give a name for shortcut, let's say Clipboard Clear and
save it.
So after typing the command you go to next
shortcut name
so you give the shortcut a name, such as, clipboard clear, or,
ClearClipboard
now tab finish, enter,

you will see the name,
Now you will see the shortcut icon on desktop to clear clipboard. This can
be double clicked to clear the clipboard.

clipboard clear icon

Test and Confirm

To know whether this method is working, simply copy some content to
clipboard and paste it to notepad or MS Word, it should paste. Now double
click the
shortcut on the desktop, you could see a DOS (black screen) pop up and
disappears (make sure it doesn't throw any errors). If this works well, the
clipboard
should have been cleared. To check this, simply paste (Ctrl+V) to the same
notepad or MS Word and you should not see any copied content now. This will
confirm that the
desktop shortcut is working fine.

This JAWS is a Beta version put out to see where the problems may appear.
Often fixing one issue creates another problem.
Many companies require employees to use specific programs, often Microsoft

Has anyone on the list experienced issues when running the spell checker in

Re: [JAWS-Users] Updated JAWS 18

2017-09-28 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi Group,
I am using Latest W10 and Outlook 2010 on two computers. I updated my Jaws
to the latest update with is Jaws 18.0.4321. When I type in the to field the
first letter a number of names comes up and I can arrow down the list and
Jaws announces all of them. This works fine on both my computers. So I am
guessing this must be an Outlook 2016 issue with Jaws not announcing the
names in the To field. Can anyone confirm if the Jaws beta version which is
Jaws 2018 is working correctly with Outlook 2010 or 2016 in the To field in
a new email. This would be nice to know.
Mr. Ed

This is not an issue with Outlook. The problem did not exist until the most
recent Beta update of JAWS. Using Magnifier and my little bit of remaining
vision, I can see that the Outlook feature is still working. Type in a few
letters and the list appears. However, using the down arrow key makes the
list vanish.

This JAWS is a Beta version put out to see where the problems may appear.
Often fixing one issue creates another problem.
Many companies require employees to use specific programs, often Microsoft
products. Tech support is very resistant to having to support alternatives.

Has anyone on the list experienced issues when running the spell checker in
Outlook 2016 365? Since the newest JAWS Beta, the checker consistently
crashes Outlook, but not when run as part of the send operation.

With all the issues I hear about with windows mail apps why not just use

I don’t' get that beep and am able to down-arrow. For me at least, Jaws
doesn’t announce the names of contacts, but they are being cycled through. I
email a lot of the same people for my business and have learned the pattern
of how they come up when typing out their names. The letter M and then arrow
down for Maria X, Y or Z for example. This still occurs. Again though, Jaws
just isn't announcing the changes.
Either way though, it is annoying and frustrating as I often now have to use
the to or CC or BCC buttons to go into my address book when I want to insert
multiple emails or if there is a long list of names with the same starting
sequence of letters.

settings from the prior version of JAWS into the latest version. This includes
any application and default settings, scripts, dictionary entries, graphics
labels, PlaceMarkers, flexible web rules, personalized web settings including
custom labels, speech and sounds schemes, and voice profiles. When JAWS 18
first starts after an install and it detects that there are custom user
settings for JAWS 17 available, you will be asked if you want to migrate these
settings to the current version of JAWS. Choose Yes to migrate your settings
from JAWS 17, or choose No to start with the default settings in JAWS 18 and
launch the Startup Wizard.

Once the settings have been migrated, a dialog box opens where you can
configure the JAWS startup options. This dialog box contains the same options
found in the Start JAWS Options dialog box, which is accessed from the JAWS
window by opening the Options menu, Selecting Options, and then choosing the
Automatically Start JAWS button. Once you have confirmed how you want JAWS to
start, choose OK to save and close the dialog box.

NOTE: Due to significant changes to the settings file structure prior to JAWS
17, custom user settings can not be migrated from versions of JAWS older than
version 17.

Completely New Import and Export for JAWS Customized User Settings

JAWS 18 now enables you to quickly and conveniently export all of your JAWS
user settings including application and default settings, custom scripts,
dictionary entries, graphics labels, PlaceMarkers, flexible web rules,
personalized web settings including custom labels, speech and sounds schemes,
and voice profiles to a single backup file which can be stored or shared with
other JAWS users.
The JAWS settings backup files are saved with an SBAK extension. This backup
file can then be easily imported on any computer running JAWS 18 or later and
these settings will be used by that copy of JAWS.

To export settings to an SBAK file, open the Utilities menu located in the JAWS
application window, open the Import/Export menu, and select Export Settings.
The Export Settings wizard opens and guides you through exporting your
settings. During this process, you can choose to export all user settings, or
select specific settings to export. By default, the SBAK file is saved to the

Hi david,
I followed your directions and it took me to the same place that I have gone
to before. There are no buttons on that web site to update Office 2010 as I
could see. Here is what it said on that page about it.
Windows 10 is a service, which means automatic updates are turned on by

I do have it turned on under update and security to have all my products
updated automatically.

Migrate Settings from Prior Versions of JAWS

We have reintroduced the ability for users to merge all user customized
settings from the prior version of JAWS into the latest version. This includes
any application and default settings, scripts, dictionary entries, graphics

settings to the current version of JAWS.

NOTE: Due to significant changes to the settings file structure prior to JAWS

version 17.

Completely New Import and Export for JAWS Customized User Settings

JAWS 18 now enables you to quickly and conveniently export all of your JAWS
user settings including application and default settings, custom scripts,
dictionary entries, graphics labels, PlaceMarkers, flexible web rules,
personalized web settings including custom labels, speech and sounds schemes,

other JAWS users.

By default, the SBAK file is saved to the
Desktop using the name JAWSSettingsBackup (where Version Number
is the JAWS version currently running when using the export feature). You can
specify a different location and file name if necessary, as well as add
optional comments to provide more information about why you are creating the
backup.
Once the export is complete, the SBAK file containing your settings can be
shared with other JAWS users through email or a file sharing service such as
Dropbox, or stored on a USB flash drive.

To import JAWS settings from an SBAK file, open the Utilities menu located in
the JAWS application window, open the Import/Export menu, and select Import
Settings. The Import User Settings wizard opens and guides you through
importing the settings. By default, the import will merge the settings from the
backup file with existing user settings and if a setting in the user folder

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS2018

2017-09-14 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi,
Just to let you know there are settings in Edge and also there is a favorite
list. The problem is with Edge you don't get to them like you do in IE. I
will post below a tutorial by David Moore on Edge using Narrator. But a lot
of the keys for Narrator will work with Jaws 2018.

Hi all,
Microsoft Edge works so well with Narrator, that I decided to do a tutorial
on it for you guys.
Narrator works just as well with Edge as JAWS does in other browsers.
This tutorial is written very simply, and I tell you everything Narrator
says each time I press Tab and other keys.
Please enjoy and give me as much feed back as you can.
Here is the tutorial pasted in this message right now!
Tutorial for Microsoft Edge
I will write this tutorial using Narrator only.
I am using the latest public build of Windows 10 Creators update.
If you are using anything different than that, you might get different
results.
When you can press spacebar or enter, I will list them both.
If I only list enter, that means that you can only use enter.
If I only list Spacebar, that means that you can only press spacebar to
toggle something, for example.
Also, unless you are reading what is on a web site, make sure that you have
scan mode turnned off with Narrator. For example, when we go through the
settings, and you are pressing spacebar or enter, scan mode must be off.
Remember, Pressing Caps Lock+Spacebar, toggles scan mode on and off.
That is very important. Please read Jim's tutorial on using Narrator in the
creators update of Windows 10.
I have a list of all key commands for Edge at the end of this tutorial.
Through the tutorial, I will point out many key commands as well, as I go.

Section Number One
Opening the Edge Browser:
Press the Windows key or CTRL+Escape, to open the start area. Next, type
Edge and enter when Narrator announces it.
Press enter, and the Edge browser should open.

Section Number Two
Opening the Freedom Scientific Web Site:
I pressed CTRL+L (alt+D works as well) and entered:
www.freedomscientific.com
That is the site for Freedom Scientific.
The web site came up very quickly.
I can use all navigation keys, like H for heading, C for Combo Box, E for
edit area, , for example, just like other browsers, and they all work.
Section Three
Pressing alt+X to get a large Virticle Menu:
Now, I will now press ALT+X to open the settings and more menu! This is to
the right of the address bar, but Alt+X opens this same menu. We have a lot
in this virticle menu.a large virticle menu of choices. When I down arrow, I
here the following:
New Window (CTRL+N), New InPrivate Window (CTRL+SHIFT+P), Zoom out, Zoom in,
Cast media to device, Find on page, Print, Pin this page to Start, F12
Developer Tools, Open with Internet Explorer, Send feedback, Extensions,
What's new and Tips, and finally, Settings. Extensions and Settings are the
main two choices we are interested in with this menu. Key commands will do
the rest.
Next, I will talk about settings.
Section Four:
Navigating settings and Advance settings:
Press alt+X again, and up arrow once to settings, because that is the last
choice.
Press enter on settings.
You will hear:
Choose a Theme light.
Don't worry about that!
Tab once, and you will hear:
Open Microsoft Edge with a page or set of pages combo box.
This is how you choose how you want Microsoft Edge to open.
I have mine set to a specific page or pages.
Now, Tab again, and you have an edit field where you can type in your pages
that you want opened When Microsoft Edge is launched.
I just entered:
www.google.com
Therefore, when I start Edge, the Google home page opens for me.
Tabbing again:
I hear delete button, where you can press spacebar or enter to delete your
page or pages.
Tabbing again, I hear Add Button, where you can press spacebar or enter and
add another page that you want to open when Edge is started.
Tabbing again, I hear:
Open new tabs with combo box.
I have this set to a blank page.
Tab again, and you will hear:
Import from another browser button.
You can press spacebar or enter here to import all favorites and settings
from other browsers you use, like IE 11 or Chrome, or Firefox.
Tab again, and you will hear:
Show the favorites bar toggle.
I have this unchecked, because I do not want everyone to see my favorites on
a bar right on the Edge Window. Press spacebar to check or uncheck..
Tab again, and you hear:
Choose what to clear.
If you press spacebar on this, you can tab and check or uncheck what is
cleared when you delete your history. You can also choose whether this
should be cleared every time you close the Edge browser.
Tab, and you will either hear Account Settings or your MSA account link,
depending on your account setting.
Tabbing again, I hear:
Sync your favorites and reading list unchecked.
You definitely want to check this by pressing spacebar, so all of your Edge
data will be synced between all of your devices. If you do not want this,
then uncheck it with spacebar.
Tab again, and you hear:
Sync device

Howdy,

Here's the document:
Introduction to Creating Rule Sets
for JAWS Research It Queries

Introduction

Research It is a query tool first introduced in JAWS 11 which makes it fast
and simple to look up information using a predefined set of lookup modules.
Thus, for example, one might wish quickly to look up the definition for a
word encountered while reading an article without taking the time and
trouble to visit an Internet website and search for the definition. Once
the information is found, the user can rapidly return to the primary task
with a single keystroke. This allows the user to find the needed
information with a minimum amount of time and distraction. JAWS Research It
can do this and other look up tasks, providing that a rule set has been
created which tells JAWS where and how to find the information requested.
At present JAWS ships with a number of predefined rule sets, but it is
inevitable that users will want the ability to use Research It to find data
that is not available using those predefined rule sets.

It is the purpose of this document to provide a basic introduction to
creating these rule sets so users with adequate programming background can
learn the basic strategy for creating their own queries. We will discuss
the two file types that comprise a rule set and describe what types of
information are required in each. We will then discuss how desired
information is found and extracted from a webpage, provide a very basic
introduction to the programming tools used to find and extract that
information, and give a couple of simple examples to illustrate these
techniques. However, it is beyond the scope of this article to provide a
comprehensive tutorial on how to program these queries. We will provide
references to manuals and function libraries that should allow anyone with
moderate to advanced programming knowledge to acquire the necessary tools.
Such individuals should have little difficulty in expanding the introductory
information presented here and learn how to create more complex queries.
This article will probably not be very useful for that purpose to those with
little or no programming knowledge.

It is assumed that the reader has a solid understanding of how to use JAWS
and at least some familiarity with how to invoke and use a Research It
query. Those who do not should study the JAWS help system before proceeding
with this article.

Rule Sets

A Research It rule set contains two files:

a.. Rule File - This file contains the basic information needed to run the
query and allow the user to interface with it in the JAWS Research It
dialog. It uses the file extension .rul.
b.. Query File - This file contains the program which accesses an Internet
website, sends any query data to that site, locates the desired data, and
returns it as a JAWS Research It result. It uses the file extension .qry.

These two files must share a common name followed by one of these
extensions. For example, a set might contain the files MyQuery.rul and
MyQuery.qry.

The Rule File

The rule file will normally contain three or 4 entries:

a.. Friendly Name - This is a string which is the title of the query the
user will see in the JAWS Research It dialog. This is a required entry with
a maximum length of 100 characters.
b.. Description - This is a more detailed description of the query and is
an optional string with a maximum length of 500 characters. It can contain
any information which the developer feels will assist the user in using the
query such as what the query does and the format for the input data.
c.. Timeout - This is an integer defining the timeout in milliseconds that
the query will wait to receive a response from the target website. Any
query using this rule set will be aborted if it exceeds the timeout
specified. The default timeout is 15000 milliseconds and will be used if no
timeout value is specified. A longer timeout may be required if the Web
site that is queried is slow, if a large amount of data is returned, or if
the query is complicated.
d.. Version - This optional entry contains the version information for the
rule set.

An example showing the structure of a typical rule set is shown below:

[Details]

FriendlyName=Area code lookup

Description=Enter a three digit area code to find its location. Example: If
you type in 416 and choose this lookup, it will report back Toronto,
Ontario, Canada. Available for the United States and Canada only.

Timeout=15000

Version=1.0.0

The query file, which performs the actual search, will be the subject of the
remainder of this article.
