Hi Debbie.
You can either use alt f10, or as far as i can remember, if you go from
the top right hand corner, the applications key is the last one to the
left, on that very top row. does that make sense?

I hope that helps,
Mo.

If you press the function key with the f-keys on the top
row of the computer, things will happen. Function key
with f8, for example, puts a Dell laptop into projection
mode for use with a screen for presentations. The other
keys work with the function key too, but I don't remember
what they do. If you have your Dell lap top manual, you
can probably find the information there.

For future reference you can always bring up the system tray, then enter on
your computer is protected, or similar icon, then arrow down the combo box
to exit and hit enter again. You will probably get a confirmation dialog
box, just hit OK or Yes. MSE is now turned off, and can be turned back on

When I type, Jaws chokes up and sometimes doesn't read the

Jaws does not have that same problem.

I believe that there is a way to have Jaws 11 recognize an

This is a somewhat far out question but can someone tell
me if this choking issue might be a conflict between Jaws

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and windows live!

Hello Don,

I certainly understand your frustrations, however, I experience none of
those issues. I don't have any scripts loaded, and read the header fields
by tabbing through them. Perhaps, uninstalling JAWS scripts, then
uninstalling and re-installing Windows Live Mail may improve it's
performance.

It has a couple of minor quirks, but, after trying several different
clients, I chose it because I could sync all my email accounts with my
Windows Live email account.

Each email program I tried had one quirk or the other, so, I find WLM is the
best compromise for my needs.

I hope you are able to get better performance from it, but, I would never
suggest that it is the best, or easiest, just my personal preference.

Using JAWS 11 latest with Windows Live Mail, I can move between folders
all works well. It will announce unread and attachment when appropriate,
all is well. However, if I hit Enter on a message to read the message, it
will read only about 50% of the time. Most of the time, the Delete key
will announce delete but do nothing. Even using Control + D, I can only
read a couple of messages before it stops reading correctly and nothing I
do short of unloading and starting JAWS again will it start reading again.
If I attempt to compose a message it gets confused regarding Forms Mode,
and again sometimes, the only way to get it right again is to restart
JAWS. These issues make it unusable for me! Strangely, the scripts that
came with JAWS 10 work much better for me!

Of course, there are also minor issues with both 10 and 11. The address
autocomplete name does not get announced. The number of unread messages
are not announced as you arrow through the folders. The last thing I
remember off the top of my head is that the hotkeys Alt + 1 through Alt +
3 do not work to read those header fields to read the From, Date, and To
fields. Using Alt + 6 to read the Subject is the only such header info
that reads reliably.

reading the message. This is useful if you have moved to the top of
the message window.

CTRL+DELETE
JAWS now reads the word the cursor lands on after CTRL+DELETE is used to
delete the current word in an edit field inside the message body.

CTRL+DELETE now deletes everything to the right of the cursor if the cursor
is in the To, Subject, Cc, or Bcc fields. In this case JAWS now says Delete
Right and speaks everything remaining to the left of the cursor.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Serious problems when reading .txt files

2009-12-07 Thread Stewart A Overbey Jr.

It sounds like a display issue, it may or may not be related to JAWS.

If it is JAWS related, perhaps you could try reinstalling JAWS using the
repair option.

You might also check your display adapter to make sure it is SVGA. I
had a similar problem only to find out my VGA display adapter was not
sufficient for VISTA or Windows7.

You shouldn't have to change your appearance or scheme settings at all.

Thank you very much. Take care.

Click on tools, then Account Settings, go to the list box of current

you will have to manually put in your pop and smtp settings if SSL is

I hope this gets you started.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Using FS Reader to read mp3 Audio Books

2009-11-28 Thread Stewart A Overbey Jr.

David,

Thanks so much for this tip. I downloaded DAISY Generator, and on the
first couple of runs, it didn't work. It would process the files, then
say it had stopped because of too many errors. The errors listed dealt
with some problem with each mp3 file that I had copied over from a book.

Thinking it might be because these books were purchased, and that there
might be some kind of protection mechanism, I tried a series of
lectures. It worked great with them.

I love the tool, and can think of many excellent applications.

David Griffith wrote:

I offer this tip.
Experimenting with the full version of FSReader that comes with Jaws 11 I
have found that it is very good at reading mp3 audio books. In particular
the capacity to increase reading rate with control page up is better than
any other software that I have come across for this feature. Unlike other
solutions for accelerating playback the distortion level is low. It seems a
bit like having the Victor Reader Stream reading capacity on your PC.

As I understand it, even if you download and install only the demo version
of Jaws 11 you will get the full version of FSReader.

Of course FSReader will not normally read mp3 audio books as it looks only
for daisy content.
However I have found an easy way to convert a folder of mp3 files into a
Daisy book that FSReader will open and read.

The first step is to copy the folder of mp3 files you want to convert into
an easy place to find on your PC. I copied a book onto my C drive and
renamed the folder daisy.

Now download the free Daisy book Generator from

http://jaapvanlelieveld.xs4all.nl/daisy.htm

Install the Daisy Book Generator and run the program from your programs
menu.

The program is a very simple command line program. There are no menus or
buttons.
Simply type in the path of the folder you want to become a Daisy Book and
then press enter.
In my case this is C:\daisy
It seems impossible to copy and paste a long path into the program which is

why I suggest you copy the folder you want to convert into an easy to type
location.
Press enter if you get any warning messages from the program about the

filenames you have in your folder.

The program will then start converting your folder of mp3 files into a daisy
book.
The program will prompt you when this is completed and then pressing enter
again will close the program.

Now you will find that FS Reader will recognise this folder as a daisy book
and play the contents.

Hi There:

If you are going to buy a new laptop, then definitely go with windows 7
premium. It is a superior OS over windows vista. Lets put it this way! A
lot
of people stayed with windows XP because vista was just awful. Now that
Windows 7 is out, xP users are flocking to windows 7. Windows 7 is already
out selling vista in the same period of time as vista.

Also, don't forget Windows 7 has fixed a lot of problems that vista still
has. Not updating to windows 7, is like not taking the next service pack
upgrade to vista.

What you do is do the first part of the install in Windows. This will get
you far enough that once the computer reboots it will do the rest
automatically until it's ready to start. You then do a Windows U, tab one
time, space, then enter, to launch Narrator, to help you set up Windows.
Hope this helps.

Hello all,

I know we've been through this before, but, I'm about to attempt a Windows
7

upgrade with nn visual support available.

If I remember correctly, it was posted that one can use JAWS initially,
then, windows narrator for the rest. Should I make sure windows Narrator
is

turned on before I start, or, if the computer reboots during the process?

I thought the hot key for Windows Narator in VISTA was windows+u, but,
that
just brings up the Ease of Access Center, then, I have to choose
Narrator,

which, possibly I can by hitting alt+n after windows+u.

Any suggestions? Do I have the hot keys right?

Thanks for any input.

If you go to the Help menu of JAWS and hit enter, you then down-arrow to,
Check for Updates and hit enter. You then hit the spacebar on the item

Hi List,

Just to clarify, if you have downloaded and installed the JAWS 11 prior to
October 23rd at 2:30 PM EST, then you can check for updates in the Help
Menu now, and you can get this update in that fashion. If you're not sure
you need it, you can just verify the version of JAWS you have installed
now in the about box, from the Help menu also.

The current relase with the security update included, is 11.0.734 which is
also the only version available on the Download page now. So, if you
install from the web today for the first time, you are all set. Also, I
wanted to let you all know that the DVD that is going to be shipping has
been delayed a few days to make certain it contains this newer build which
contains the Security update. The SMA shipments will start to go out by
Thursday, October 29 once they clear our testing lab and complete the
production process. So anyone who is installing from the DVD on 32 bit or
64 bit Windows should continue to check for updates as always, but I
wanted to be clear that the security update is already included on your
DVD.

Eric Damery

JAWS 11, Windows 7, and email

Hello all. This question is probably better asked in the
Blind-Computing list, but, my emails don't seem to be getting through
there.

For those who are currently running Windows7, what email client are you
using. I'm planning to upgrade soon, so, I might as well get use to
using something

other than Outlook Express and/or Windows Mail.

I sincerely hope the answer is not Windows Live Mail.

It would probably be less expensive for you to buy a box, with the specs you
listed above, with no operating system installed, then, install Windows XP.
It's virtually impossible to find a new computer preloaded with XP.

I'd also caution that soon, Microsoft, and most other software developers
will stop supporting software written for XP. It may not be wise to stay
two or three operating systems behind.

If you have those set, I'm not sure what else you could try, but that

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 11 and Outlook Express

2009-10-08 Thread Stewart A Overbey, Jr.

Rick,

I sincerely wish I could offer you anything more than my own experience with
OE. I recently grew tired of Microsoft Outlook, which I have used for years
in lue of OE. So, I switched to OE, and had to play with some settings
under view to get it to work correctly. However, it works fine on all three
computers using JAWS 8, 10, and now 11.

I do know, however, that even though I'm talking about three different
computers, it doesn't mean that it will work on every one else's computer
the same way. After 22 years working with computers, and JAWS, I am
convinced there are grimlins and ghosts involved.

You probably know that ctrl+Shift+i will take you to your inbox.

I've seen enough of your posts to know you are as proficient as I, so, I'm
just trying to help you find that kneedle hidden in the haystack.

If I think of something more concrete, I'll let you know. Until then, I'll
watch, and be interested to learn how you will resolve this very annoying
issue.

Hi Stewart,
That doesn't explain why the problem isn't encountered in Jaws 6.2.
If it were an Outlook Express setting,
then it would appear to me that the problem would exist in Jaws 6.2 as
well.

What leads you to believe it is an Outlook Express setting.

I wish I had more to suggest other than to tell you I'm running both VISTA

I think there's a setting in the options, under the tools menu, where you
can change the setting to go directly to your inbox. Also, take a look at
the layout submenu in the view menu. There might be something there as
well.
If you have those set, I'm not sure what else you could try, but that
seems
to be the issue, unless I'm missing something.

Honestly could not think of a more detailed subject line, but I do have a
very weird situation with Jaws 10, and it only seems to appear in email
subject lines. It does not happen in Jaws 8, my other version, and I do
think my configuration manager settings are the same in both versions. No
matter how many times I try fixing this nothing helps. In Outlook
Express, if there is a name in the subject line that begins with the
letters M A R, such as Marshall or Mary, Jaws will say subject March Twan
and then the rest of the name--like it'll say March Twan Shal for
Marshall. When I read the word by character nothing seems amiss, and even
the body of the email pronounces the name correctly. I have no idea if it
could be a weird bolded print or something, but has anyone else run across
this weird thing? I doubt it but thought I'd pose the question and see if
anything can be changed to make M A R names pronounce correctly in email
subject lines.

work if a Jaws script was specifically built for it. I'm sure you
could find Jaws script developers on this list, or at least learn
where to look.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Looking for Timer Software that works with JAWS

Hello.

I work for my local talking book/braille library, and we're setting up
a
patron access computer with JAWS, as well as magnification software.
Our IT
staff needs to find software for timing/logging patrons off, similar
to what
the public libraries in our system are using. A couple programs have
been
tried with mixed results. One didn't work with JAWS to let the patron
know
their time was up. The other did work with JAWS, but a Stop button
was
visible, so a patron could feasibly stop the timer and be on the
computer as
long as he or she wanted.

Does anyone know of a good program for accomplishing this task?
Basically,
it needs to log the patron off after a set interval, but also needs to
warn
the patron verbally as time is getting closer, but we don't want the
patron
to be able to disable it and mess around with it. A free trial would
also
be appreciated so that we can evaluate the software.

You may feel free to contact me off-list if necessary.

Wes

Totally agree. XP was much easier to use and many more useful features
than
vista. Also note if you have some older scanners software etc there
may not
be aa driver upgrade. This happened to me with a perfectly good 4 year
old
HP scanner, which was not supported for vista by HP. I suspect this
may
happen with 7.1 as well.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista

2009-07-16 Thread Stewart A Overbey Jr.
David, and all,

I truly appreciate your comments. I am glad to hear, at least one
person suggest the upgrade. I have used it with JAWS, when trouble
shooting friends computers, and found it accessible if not
cumbersome.. I'm sure It wouldn't be so once I learned to use it, but
I have a great computer, and am not in the market for a new computer.

I was considering, and still am, the upgrade, so that when Windows 7
comes out, I will be able to upgrade more easily.

With Microsoft's track record for releasing operating systems
prematurely, I believe I'll wait for a year after windows 7 is out to
consider upgrading.

Thanks again all!

Although, I run vista here, I've been running it for about a year and

the
new features, but hate the instability.

Thanks.

 hi

it depends on why you where thinking of it to begin with.

I had to buy a new pc couple days ago because my xp machine crashed.
So
was left with two choices, buy a new computer with vista and get on
with
it, or don't have a computer. might as well chop my arms off than
have no
 computer. *smiles*

I figured might as well get used to vista since I had to purchase a
new
 machine any way.

yes, I'll agree vista is different to xp, but in a lot of ways,
exactly
 the same.

you still have a desktop, you still have email, you still have
menues.

windows mail was outlook express, but honestly if you could use the
latter
then you sure can use the former.

I.E is version 7 so that the same as XP.

I would strongly recommend anyone wishing to go for vista, takes a
look at
the daisy files from freedom scientific. it does explain a lot and
how to
manage the new layout of the desktop, what the vista gadgets are
etc.

so meaning no di respect to anyone, I totally disagree with people
when
they say don't upgrade, it's not accessible

load of rubbish and gives a total wrong impression.

what is good for one might not work for another, but I would say try
it
out as you might find it is easier to use than what you currently
have.
 and, you might like it.

I'm sorry if this upset anyone, this was not my intention.

I for one was scared off from upgrading by the so called experts I
am
 not pointing any fingers here.

my last comments here are, ask yourself your own questions?

why do you want to upgrade?

 Thanks

 Elaine

hi mike

might be wrong on this one but I think first you should
check the Spam
filter on the google mail web page.

I often have to go through it to allow an email to get
through to outlook
express.

I don't think a message rule would work as gmail itself has
placed that
email in the Spam filter.

hope this makes sense. *smiles*
