[JAWS-Users] vista computer problems
Well, I was out to try and help. That machine is having major problems. The system restore dates do not go back far enough. When you try to run anything other than internet explorer there is a message that the shimeng.dll is corrupt. It states to recover with the windows disks. there is no cd. I guess that it is in another partition on the hd. I tried to run a virus scan and the set up produced the same error. I then tried to create a cd with her word documents. That process also had the error. --- Please visit my web page It’s motivational, inspirational with a touch of humor There is also a very extensive resource list for the blind http://www.LennyMcHugh.com International Brotherhood of Magicians member #43990R For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Dear all, A bit of a long shot but someone may be able to help? I need to install JAWS on a machine but the screen is broken. The logon screen has around four different usernames and the one that I particularly need to select is called Terry2. Does anyone know where the focus actually defaults to on the Vista logon screen and if I can use the letter tt to highlight the Terry username for example or do I need to tab and arrow around? Many thanks in anticipation for any help. P.s. Windows and U won't seem to run up the narrator at that point for some reason but the machine will log on. [JAWS-Users] Vista Computer Num Lock always on after booting
Dear List A Jaws User using a 64 bit Vista machine running Jaws 10 made a query to me today. She has an annoying problem whereby her num lock key is always set to on when her computer boots up. She has been told that there is a Jaws setting which can resolve this, but I am not aware of any such solution. That is unless there is a way of using the keyboard manager that I am not aware of. The person asked for opinions, and that's what I offered. If you think it was unfair of me to answer in the method I chose that's your business but attacking me on my own list by accusing me of being unfair is way out of line. If I would have been asked to amplify my answer by further explaining myself in a civilized manner then I would have done so happily. This thread is closed as of now. In any case, seeing as how you're the owner of this list and it's sister website and accompanying list, Blind Computing, your opinion holds quite a bit of weight on this and the other list, so I think I, and many of others on this list would like to know why the owner of the Jaws users list is vehemently opposing the upgrade to Windows Vista. Lol! Actually it was 2 gigs of ram and I think I have like 80 gigs of my hd free. And actually, I've experienced xp pro on a 697 mhz pentium 3, with 256 mb of ram, and a 8 gig hard drive (7.84 actually), and jaws 4.51, the standard version. Not , fun! And, along with the upgrade to xp, I also got a really crappy mother board that came with a built in sound card, the mic jack of which I was able to blow with a cell phone. But anyway rant over. I'm of course not using that machine for much anymore. :D hehheheh. Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista
Totally agree. XP was much easier to use and many more useful features than vista. Also note if you have some older scanners software etc there may not be aa driver upgrade. This happened to me with a perfectly good 4 year old HP scanner, which was not supported for vista by HP. hi it depends on why you where thinking of it to begin with. I had to buy a new pc couple days ago because my xp machine crashed. So was left with two choices, buy a new computer with vista and get on with it, or don't have a computer. might as well chop my arms off than have no computer. *smiles* I figured might as well get used to vista since I had to purchase a new machine any way. yes, I'll agree vista is different to xp, but in a lot of ways, exactly the same. you still have a desktop, you still have email, you still have menues. windows mail was outlook express, but honestly if you could use the latter then you sure can use the former. I.E is version 7 so that the same as XP. I would strongly recommend anyone wishing to go for vista, takes a look at the daisy files from freedom scientific. it does explain a lot and how to manage the new layout of the desktop, what the vista gadgets are etc. so meaning no di respect to anyone, I totally disagree with people when they say don't upgrade, it's not accessible load of rubbish and gives a total wrong impression. what is good for one might not work for another, but I would say try it out as you might find it is easier to use than what you currently have. and, you might like it. Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista
David, and all, I truly appreciate your comments. I am glad to hear, at least one person suggest the upgrade. I have used it with JAWS, when trouble shooting friends computers, and found it accessible if not cumbersome.. I'm sure It wouldn't be so once I learned to use it, but I have a great computer, and am not in the market for a new computer. I was considering, and still am, the upgrade, so that when Windows 7 comes out, I will be able to upgrade more easily. With Microsoft's track record for releasing operating systems prematurely, I believe I'll wait for a year after windows 7 is out to consider upgrading. Thanks again all! I agree, my experience with Vista Business and Home Premium is the same ever since I upgraded in January 08. Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista
it has much better security and if you max out the ram. it runs like a top. you can really tell when its a vista problem and when its a jaws problem. Ben running it for a year now and wouldn't go back to xp for anything. jaws crashed to much and trying to recover was always a reboot. Not with vista! Those that don't like it mostly use it with 1 gig of ram, and that worked fine for xp, but vista is not and I repeat not xp! Hi Elaine!! Its like you took the words right out of my mouth!! I just upgraded the other day to vista and got my new 1545. I was also scared out of upgrading because some people told me bad things too. I agree, you have to upgrade and get on with it. Vista isn't so bad. It like you said isn't much different from xp. It is kinda slower, but you get used to it. Just have a little patience. Not trying to offend anyone either! I'm sorry if this upset anyone, this was not my intention. I for one was scared off from upgrading by the so called experts I am not pointing any fingers here. my last comments here are, ask yourself your own questions? why do you want to upgrade? Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista
Hi, Sarah again! I think if someone already has a computer with xp they should keep it. I would have got xp if it didn't cost so much more then vista. If I already had an xp computer, I wouldn't have upgraded, but since I had to, and didn't have the extra then obviously I had not much choice because I needed a computer before windows seven releases. Anyways, Vista doesn't seem as bad as people make it sound, as I wrote in my last email, but I also think that I would keep xp if I had it and only upgrade to vista if I was buying a new machine. Hi David, I'm sorry, but this is rather unfair of you. You cannot simply say that this is your opinion and not justify it by not telling us why we shouldn't upgrade, I think it's just plain irresponsible, but that's just my opinion. Smile. Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista Media Center
Hello Cory and Mark, For the most part it seems to have about the same level of navigability as Media Center 2005. There are several hotkeys that can be used for the various components of Media Center. If you are interested, I have included a link below to a web page where you can download a document that has a few tables of hotkeys in it. The document will be on the web site for five days. The tables summarize the hotkeys that can be used for Live TV, recorded TV, radio, DVD playing and other components. Using arrow keys in the main interface works similarly to the way they did in the 2005 interface. Enter key moves focus down in the layers of choices. Backspace goes back a level at a time. Here is the link to where you can download the Word document: http://rcpt.yousendit.com/693345086/6df39f31e198cde63f6cb92e621bde57 Take care. Sounds like he is trying to change some folder views or go into certain folders. Because the UAC don't give you a ok button, its either continue or allow buttons. if trying to change things within folders or get into folders. he will have to go into the properties for those folders and change the security permissions for that folder. It is the second layer of security in vista. At 04:30 PM 3/22/2009, you wrote: Hi All, A friend has just become active with Jaws again. Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista administrative rights
Hello Mike, You can easily turn the user account control off in Vista. Move into the start menu and move off of the search box. Press C until you get to control panel and press enter key. When the search box comes up for the control panel type in user account control (without the quotes) and use tab key until you get to the choice for turning the user account control on or off. Press enter key on the link. In the resultant box check or uncheck the checkbox using spacebar and use tab key to the OK button and press spacebar. There will be a confirmation dialog that gives a warning and you will need to confirm that you want to turn off the user account control if that is what you chose to do. I really don't suggest that you turn user account control off. If you choose to then be sure that all other security programs are up-to-date and active. What I suggest is that you run UAC in quiet mode. The easiest way to do that is to download TweakUAC and use it. After downloading TweakUAC you do not have to install it. When using it for the first time you might need to accept a license agreement. If I remember right, I might have had to use JAWS cursor to find the button or graphic for accepting the license, but I am not sure if that is right. If you turn off UAC, the protected mode for Internet Explorer 7 is also turned off and not active. Below is some additional info that you might want to consider along with a link where TweakUAC can be downloaded. When you use TweakUAC there will be choices for turning UAC off, leaving it on or using it in quiet mode. Running it in quiet mode will prevent the elevation prompts from running but will keep Internet Explorer's protected mode active. . The IE7 protected mode is off if UAC is disabled. It is based on the User Interface Privilege Isolation technology introduced in Vista to control such things as user permission levels. When Internet Explorer 7 is running in Protected Mode (which is the default in all but the Trusted security zone) the process runs with low rights, even if Internet Explorer is being run by an administrator. This means that even if an attacker defeated all defense mechanisms and got control of the Internet Explorer process and managed to run some arbitrary code, it would be severely limited in what it could do. Nearly all of the file system and registry would be off limits for writing, reducing the ability of an exploit to modify the system or harm your files. The code wouldn't have enough privileges to install software, put files in your Startup folder, hijack browser settings, or do other nasty things. If you download and use TweakUAC you will be able to run UAC in its quiet mode. In such a mode, you keep all the positive effects of UAC, such as Internet Explorer operating in the protected mode, applications starting without the administrative privileges by default, etc. The only thing that gets changed is that you will no longer see the infamous Windows needs your permission to continue messages whenever you attempt to make a change to your Vista configuration, or when you run a program that needs administrative rights. http://www.tweak-uac.com/download/ Brian Lee brianl...@charter.net Brian Lee brianl...@charter.net - Original Message - From: Mike Barbara mb69ma...@charter.net To: jaws-users-list jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Sunday, March 22, 2009 1:30 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Vista administrative rights Hi All, A friend has just become active with Jaws again. I'm using vista and don't have much problem on it. I suggest that your friend has to create a folder on her desktop and name it as download. Save it there when she download file for the first time, and the machine will remember it the next time she will do any downloading. Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista PC and Problems with Jaws
Sory to say this, but I've heard that using the gaming computer with jaws is always a problem. Maybe you should buy one more, or use your old one. This is a new computer, with very up to date specs ( gaming PC) and therefore a very powerful graphics card. the card is a nvidia geforce 9800 gt, since the pc is used also for gaming by a sighted person. when we install jaws all goes well, it says that windows had to change some settings for eyample turn itself to run vista basic instead of the default aero surface and so forth. it says that this will change back every time the application (jaws) is not running. so far so good. when I restart windows though we get the regular aero surface and jaws pops up with an error message and won't open at all. so my guess is that jaws is not able to make the switch between its on settings and the regular ones, at start up. I could try and set everything to windows basic but that is not workable as the pc is used by a sighted person mainly for gaming and stuff. I'm so sorry for you. I know what's like to have a new and fast pc. But those visual games can not coexist so peacefully with jaws. Hey Gang, Can any one tell me how you can move a file or folder in vista? In XP it is in the edit menu and move folder, but I can't find it in vista. Maybe in vista you have to do it differently? In both XP and Vista Windows Explorer, You can move a file or folder by selecting the item and pressing Control x for Cut. Then you go to the location you want the file or folder and press Control v to paste. Of course, I am wrong about this since I am someone's husband! Did you know you can edit your Send To submenu? In the run dialog, type sendto as all one word and press Enter. You can create shortcuts to the destinations you want, or delete items you never use. I have a shortcut to my home directory on my file server. If you create shortcuts make sure they are always connected, otherwise you will get network errors. [JAWS-Users] vista or xp, my final decision
Hi all, A few weeks ago, I emailed the list and said I had a new laptop and asked people to tell me their experiences with vista and office 2007. I have decided for the moment to stay with xp and office 2003. A friend was kind enough to fix everything so xp and office 2003 work properly on the new laptop. I haven't had a chance to get it out and use it yet because of school, but will try it out this weekend. Now all I need is my own copy of jaws, because I am using a copy the school bought for me to use and I have to give it back to them at the end of this year. Thanks again to everyone who answered my earlier questions about vista and office 2007. have a good day and God bless, from Andrew Visit the JAWS Users List home page at: http://www.jaws-users.com Visit the Blind Computing home page at: http://www.blind-computing.com Address for the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To post to this group, send email to jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help from Mailman with your account Put the word help in the subject or body of a blank message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Use the following form in order to contact the management team http://www.jaws-users.com/managers.php If you wish to join the Blind Computing list send a blank email to the following address: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
