I should add, Kathy, that Vista will have security updates into at least
mid-2016. Windows 7 is until early 2020 as I recall, and with the market
penetration of Windows 7, it wouldn't surprise me at all if it got extended
as XP's life cycle got extended.

Next year, we'll see Windows 10 get released. I assume the next release of
Jaws will have the ability to work with the new features in Windows 10. It
should be nicer, from what I've read, than Windows 8. So, you can always
save money and use your current laptop and get something newer in a year or
so that will support all the features of the newer Windows including
touchscreen gestures; which would not be available at all on your older
machine.

I do some tech work, unless you have a copy of Windows 7 32-bit already and
just want to do it, sure. But, it isn't worth it, otherwise.

If you need to buy a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit, you can find
them for $90 on Amazon. I don't think you can do an in-place upgrade with
an OEM copy. So, you'll need to backup your laptop, then re-format and
install Windows 7.

If you are going to pay a tech to do this, you're probably looking at a
couple hours.

You'd be better off buying a refurbished Windows 7 Home Premium laptop.
I've seen some for $150 or so and possibly higher if you want better specs.

You can see if your laptop will run Windows 7 by running the Microsoft
Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor which you can dowload at
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20

It will show you hardware specs, what if any software drivers may not work
in Windows 7.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

[JAWS-Users] vista computer problems

2014-07-15 Thread Lenny McHugh
Well, I was out to try and help. That machine is having major problems. The
system restore dates do not go back far enough. When you try to run anything
other than internet explorer there is a message that the shimeng.dll is
corrupt. It states to recover with the windows disks. there is no cd. I
guess that it is in another partition on the hd.
I tried to run a virus scan and the set up produced the same error. I then
tried to create a cd with her word documents. That process also had the
error.

[JAWS-Users] Vista Logon Screen Query

2013-05-21 Thread Hicks Steven (CORNWALL IT SERVICES)
Dear all,

A bit of a long shot but someone may be able to help?
I need to install JAWS on a machine but the screen is broken.
The logon screen has around four different usernames and the one that I
particularly need to select is called Terry2.
Does anyone know where the focus actually defaults to on the Vista logon screen
and if I can use the letter tt to highlight the Terry username for example or
do I need to tab and arrow around?

Many thanks in anticipation for any help.

P.s. Windows and U won't seem to run up the narrator at that point for some
reason but the machine will log on.

Hi Steve,

On the Vista's logon screen are users listed in a listview in big icon

arrrow keys can you navigate between users. You can press T, too, if you
are on the first user then the focus will move to the first user whos
name begins with letter T.

Hi everyone,

I have seen the below with the last several Jaws 10-12 with my Vista and
Win7 laptops. A tech talked me through this, but I am wondering if any of
you have seen this. I am using Microsoft security essentials. I also saw
the

same thing when I had AVG installed.

In the Jaws set up procedures, after the computer has restarted, the
installation literally stops. I had sighted assistance and found that
Windows was saying that some of the files I was trying to install were not
compatible with Windows.

I entered on the option to install anyway.

As I said, a tech from Freedom Scientific walked me through with this,
however, since I was trying to move along as quickly as possible, I didn't
take note about how to do this. The tech acted as if this was rather
normal

and knew right away what to do.

Any advice would be appreciated,

Thank you, Russ

I am an XP abuser, but a fellow computer abuser is running Vista and we
would like to know if you access MS configuration to make changes to the
start up page the same in Vista as you would with XP? If there are any
differences would someone please explainthem or give us the steps for making
the changes to the msconfig/start up page? Also, once you restart the
computer do you get that message in Vista that you have to press space bar
to check a box and then tab to okay and space bar okay so that this
particular message doesn't appear the next time you restart? All help will
be greatly appreciated. Thanks much. Take care.

Hi Mike,
You get to the system configuration utility the same way you do in XP.
msconfig
You do not get that dialogue when the computer restarts, however, you will
see a checkbox within the utility
that you can check to not show the message that the computer may need to be
restarted in order for the changes to take affect.
I was using Jaws10 while in Vista.

She has an annoying problem whereby her num lock key is always set to on
when her computer boots up.
She has been told that there is a Jaws setting which can resolve this, but
I

am not aware of any such solution. That is unless there is a way of using

As far as I am aware to change the status of the num lock key at start up

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi, Sarah again!
I think if someone already has a computer with xp they should keep it. I
would have got xp if it didn't cost so much more then vista. If I already
had an xp computer, I wouldn't have upgraded, but since I had to, and
didn't have the extra then obviously I had not much choice because I
needed a computer before windows seven releases. Anyways, Vista doesn't
seem as bad as people make it sound, as I wrote in my last email, but I
also think that I would keep xp if I had it and only upgrade to vista if I
was buying a new machine.

hi

it depends on why you where thinking of it to begin with.

I had to buy a new pc couple days ago because my xp machine crashed. So
was left with two choices, buy a new computer with vista and get on with
it, or don't have a computer. might as well chop my arms off than have
no computer. *smiles*

I figured might as well get used to vista since I had to purchase a new
machine any way.

yes, I'll agree vista is different to xp, but in a lot of ways, exactly
the same.

you still have a desktop, you still have email, you still have menues.

windows mail was outlook express, but honestly if you could use the
latter then you sure can use the former.

I.E is version 7 so that the same as XP.

I would strongly recommend anyone wishing to go for vista, takes a look
at the daisy files from freedom scientific. it does explain a lot and
how to manage the new layout of the desktop, what the vista gadgets are
etc.

so meaning no di respect to anyone, I totally disagree with people when
they say don't upgrade, it's not accessible

load of rubbish and gives a total wrong impression.

what is good for one might not work for another, but I would say try it
out as you might find it is easier to use than what you currently have.
and, you might like it.

I'm sorry if this upset anyone, this was not my intention.

I for one was scared off from upgrading by the so called experts I am
not pointing any fingers here.

my last comments here are, ask yourself your own questions?

why do you want to upgrade?

Thanks

Ben running it for a year now and wouldn't go back to xp for

Those that don't like it mostly use it with 1 gig of ram, and that

Well I don't believe Windows 7 will be released prematurely as already
millions of people are trying it out and it proves to be a major success.
Already retailers are out of stock on the pre-orders, so this must be the
first for Microsoft, to release an OS that is not premature.

David, and all,

I truly appreciate your comments. I am glad to hear, at least one
person suggest the upgrade. I have used it with JAWS, when trouble
shooting friends computers, and found it accessible if not
cumbersome.. I'm sure It wouldn't be so once I learned to use it, but
I have a great computer, and am not in the market for a new computer.

I was considering, and still am, the upgrade, so that when Windows 7
comes out, I will be able to upgrade more easily.

With Microsoft's track record for releasing operating systems
prematurely, I believe I'll wait for a year after windows 7 is out to
consider upgrading.

Thanks again all!

2009-07-17 Thread David Ferrin
The person asked for opinions, and that's what I offered. If you think it
was unfair of me to answer in the method I chose that's your business but
attacking me on my own list by accusing me of being unfair is way out of
line. If I would have been asked to amplify my answer by further explaining
myself in a civilized manner then I would have done so happily. This thread

Hi David,

I'm sorry, but this is rather unfair of you.

You cannot simply say that this is your opinion and not justify it by not
telling us why we shouldn't upgrade, I think it's just plain irresponsible,
but that's just my opinion. Smile.

In any case, seeing as how you're the owner of this list and it's sister
website and accompanying list, Blind Computing, your opinion holds quite a
bit of weight on this and the other list, so I think I, and many of others
on this list would like to know why the owner of the Jaws users list is
vehemently opposing the upgrade to Windows Vista.

Lol!
Actually it was 2 gigs of ram and I think I have like 80 gigs of my hd free.
And actually, I've experienced xp pro on a 697 mhz pentium 3, with 256 mb of
ram, and a 8 gig hard drive (7.84 actually), and jaws 4.51, the standard
version. Not , fun! And, along with the upgrade to xp, I also got a really
crappy mother board that came with a built in sound card, the mic jack of
which I was able to blow with a cell phone. But anyway rant over. I'm of
course not using that machine for much anymore. :D hehheheh.

Totally agree. XP was much easier to use and many more useful features than
vista. Also note if you have some older scanners software etc there may not
be aa driver upgrade. This happened to me with a perfectly good 4 year old
HP scanner, which was not supported for vista by HP. I suspect this may
happen with 7.1 as well.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista

2009-07-16 Thread Elaine

hi

it depends on why you where thinking of it to begin with.

I had to buy a new pc couple days ago because my xp machine crashed. So was
left with two choices, buy a new computer with vista and get on with it, or
don't have a computer. might as well chop my arms off than have no
computer. *smiles*

I figured might as well get used to vista since I had to purchase a new
machine any way.

yes, I'll agree vista is different to xp, but in a lot of ways, exactly the
same.

you still have a desktop, you still have email, you still have menues.

windows mail was outlook express, but honestly if you could use the latter
then you sure can use the former.

I.E is version 7 so that the same as XP.

I would strongly recommend anyone wishing to go for vista, takes a look at
the daisy files from freedom scientific. it does explain a lot and how to
manage the new layout of the desktop, what the vista gadgets are etc.

so meaning no di respect to anyone, I totally disagree with people when they
say don't upgrade, it's not accessible

load of rubbish and gives a total wrong impression.

what is good for one might not work for another, but I would say try it out
as you might find it is easier to use than what you currently have. and, you
might like it.

I'm sorry if this upset anyone, this was not my intention.

I for one was scared off from upgrading by the so called experts I am not
pointing any fingers here.

my last comments here are, ask yourself your own questions?

why do you want to upgrade?

Thanks

Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista

2009-07-16 Thread Stewart A Overbey Jr.

I agree, my experience with Vista Business and Home Premium is the same ever

when XP does the job quite admirably.

I had to buy a new pc couple days ago because my xp machine

vista and get on with it, or don't have a computer. might as well

yes, I'll agree vista is different to xp, but in a lot of ways,
exactly the same.

you still have a desktop, you still have email, you still have menues.

windows mail was outlook express, but honestly if you could use the

I.E is version 7 so that the same as XP.

I would strongly recommend anyone wishing to go for vista, takes a
look at the daisy files from freedom scientific. it does explain a

gadgets are etc.

ah. I have like 2 gigs and it's only using 50% of it normally. That of
course changes if I start virtualBox and load something interesting in
there, then it gets to around 80% or so. Still though, would that be enough
to make it break?

it has much better security and if you max out the ram. it runs like
a top. you can really tell when its a vista problem and when its a
jaws problem.
Ben running it for a year now and wouldn't go back to xp for
anything. jaws crashed to much and trying to recover was always a
reboot. Not with vista!
Those that don't like it mostly use it with 1 gig of ram, and that
worked fine for xp, but vista is not and I repeat not xp!

2009-07-16 Thread Sarah anson

Hi, Sarah again!
I think if someone already has a computer with xp they should keep it. I
would have got xp if it didn't cost so much more then vista. If I already
had an xp computer, I wouldn't have upgraded, but since I had to, and didn't
have the extra then obviously I had not much choice because I needed a
computer before windows seven releases. Anyways, Vista doesn't seem as bad
as people make it sound, as I wrote in my last email, but I also think that
I would keep xp if I had it and only upgrade to vista if I was buying a new
machine.

Can anyone tell me why I should upgrade to Vista from XPPro? What are
advantages, enhanced features, ETC.

[JAWS-Users] Vista Media Center

Hi all,

I currently use Media Center 2005 with no problems. I am thinking of
upgrading to Vista Ultimate and I am wondering if Vista Media Center is as
accessible as Media Center 2005. I am not talking about the OS but the
actual Media Center component. Thanks for the help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista Media Center

2009-05-27 Thread Brian Lee

Hello Cory and Mark,

For the most part it seems to have about the same level of navigability as
Media Center 2005. There are several hotkeys that can be used for the
various components of Media Center. If you are interested, I have included
a link below to a web page where you can download a document that has a few
tables of hotkeys in it. The document will be on the web site for five
days. The tables summarize the hotkeys that can be used for Live TV,
recorded TV, radio, DVD playing and other components. Using arrow keys in
the main interface works similarly to the way they did in the 2005
interface. Enter key moves focus down in the layers of choices. Backspace
goes back a level at a time. Here is the link to where you can download the

Word document:

Take care.

Sounds like he is trying to change some folder views or go into
certain folders. Because the UAC don't give you a ok button, its
either continue or allow buttons.
if trying to change things within folders or get into folders. he
will have to go into the properties for those folders and change the
security permissions for that folder.

It is the second layer of security in vista.

Vista only offers on and off, you are thinking about windows 7. Even then
on both of these OS's you still will get admin requests still, it's simply
to do with permissions.

Vista you can only enable or disable the feature. 7 provides more

Look for the User Access Control option and set it to a different
level, there should be details about each level in there. Not in
front of a Vista computer at the moment so I can't give you more
details.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista administrative rights

2009-03-22 Thread Brian Lee

Hello Mike,

You can easily turn the user account control off in Vista. Move into the
start menu and move off of the search box. Press C until you get to control
panel and press enter key. When the search box comes up for the control
panel type in user account control (without the quotes) and use tab key
until you get to the choice for turning the user account control on or off.
Press enter key on the link. In the resultant box check or uncheck the
checkbox using spacebar and use tab key to the OK button and press spacebar.
There will be a confirmation dialog that gives a warning and you will need
to confirm that you want to turn off the user account control if that is
what you chose to do.

I really don't suggest that you turn user account control off. If you
choose to then be sure that all other security programs are up-to-date and
active. What I suggest is that you run UAC in quiet mode. The easiest way
to do that is to download TweakUAC and use it. After downloading TweakUAC
you do not have to install it. When using it for the first time you might
need to accept a license agreement. If I remember right, I might have had
to use JAWS cursor to find the button or graphic for accepting the license,
but I am not sure if that is right. If you turn off UAC, the protected mode
for Internet Explorer 7 is also turned off and not active. Below is some
additional info that you might want to consider along with a link where
TweakUAC can be downloaded. When you use TweakUAC there will be choices for
turning UAC off, leaving it on or using it in quiet mode. Running it in
quiet mode will prevent the elevation prompts from running but will keep
Internet Explorer's protected mode active. .

The IE7 protected mode is off if UAC is disabled. It is based on the User
Interface Privilege Isolation technology introduced in Vista to control such
things as user permission levels.

When Internet Explorer 7 is running in Protected Mode (which is the default
in all but the Trusted security zone) the process runs with low rights,
even if Internet Explorer is being run by an administrator. This means that
even if an attacker defeated all defense mechanisms and got control of the
Internet Explorer process and managed to run some arbitrary code, it would
be severely limited in what it could do. Nearly all of the file system and
registry would be off limits for writing, reducing the ability of an exploit
to modify the system or harm your files. The code wouldn't have enough
privileges to install software, put files in your Startup folder, hijack
browser settings, or do other nasty things.

If you download and use TweakUAC you will be able to run UAC in its quiet
mode. In such a mode, you keep all the positive effects of UAC, such as
Internet Explorer operating in the protected mode, applications starting
without the administrative privileges by default, etc. The only thing that
gets changed is that you will no longer see the infamous Windows needs your
permission to continue messages whenever you attempt to make a change to
your Vista configuration, or when you run a program that needs
administrative rights.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista Question

2009-01-08 Thread Estelita

I'm using vista and don't have much problem on it.
I suggest that your friend has to create a folder on her desktop and name it
as download.
Save it there when she download file for the first time, and the machine
will remember it the next time she will do any downloading.

Hope this helps,

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Vista PC and Problems with Jaws

hi list,
I am having some trouble running Jaws 9 on our new PC.
This is a new computer, with very up to date specs ( gaming PC) and
therefore a very powerful graphics card. the card is a nvidia geforce 9800
gt, since the pc is used also for gaming by a sighted person.
when we install jaws all goes well, it says that windows had to change
some settings for eyample turn itself to run vista basic instead of the
default aero surface and so forth. it says that this will change back
every time the application (jaws) is not running. so far so good. when I
restart windows though we get the regular aero surface and jaws pops up
with an error message and won't open at all. so my guess is that jaws is
not able to make the switch between its on settings and the regular ones,
at start up. I could try and set everything to windows basic but that is
not workable as the pc is used by a sighted person mainly for gaming and
stuff.
I don't know if that makes a difference but in case someone uses the same
PC here are the main spcifications:

intel duo quad processor 4 x 3.2
4 giga ram
nvidia geforce 9800 gt
windows vista home premium with service pack 1

any hints highly appreciated.
regards
chrissy
p s we tried to run the installation a few times but do get the same error
all the time.

I'm so sorry for you. I know what's like to have a new and fast pc. But
those visual games can not coexist so peacefully with jaws. It's one or the
other unfortunately, or I don't know the way to do this.

hi,
well this is the only desktop pc we have now. I still have my old laptop
with xp prof on it and have jaws 9 running there, no problems. but this
one is only for my own use.
to buy an additional desktop pc is not workable moneywise unfortunately.it
would have been just nice to also be able to use the new one since all
runs so fast and smooth on that new machine.

Hey Gang,
Can any one tell me how you can move a file or folder in vista?
In XP it is in the edit menu and move folder, but I can't find it in vista.
Maybe in vista you have to do it differently?

2008-10-13 Thread Donald Marang
In both XP and Vista Windows Explorer, You can move a file or folder by
selecting the item and pressing Control x for Cut. Then you go to the
location you want the file or folder and press Control v to paste.

Of course, I am wrong about this since I am someone's husband!

2008-10-13 Thread Chris Legg
Did you know you can edit your Send To submenu? In the run dialog, type
sendto as all one word and press Enter. You can create shortcuts to the
destinations you want, or delete items you never use. I have a shortcut
to my home directory on my file server. If you create shortcuts make
sure they are always connected, otherwise you will get network errors.

Chris

Hi Patti and all the others on the list!

I have Windows Vista Business and there is both move to folder and
copy to folder in edit menu in Explorer. Or if You want to move it
to memory stick, choose the file or folder and press application key
and choose send to... and choose memory stick from submenu.

With best regards!

[JAWS-Users] vista

2008-09-05 Thread Corey Cook
Hello,
Can someone please point me to anything to configure jaws to work with
vista?
Also is there anyway to make vista act more like xp?

[JAWS-Users] vista or xp, my final decision

2008-08-22 Thread Andrew Head
Hi all,
A few weeks ago, I emailed the list and said I had a new laptop and asked
people to tell me their experiences with vista and office 2007. I have
decided for the moment to stay with xp and office 2003. A friend was kind
enough to fix everything so xp and office 2003 work properly on the new
laptop. I haven't had a chance to get it out and use it yet because of
school, but will try it out this weekend. Now all I need is my own copy of
jaws, because I am using a copy the school bought for me to use and I have
to give it back to them at the end of this year.
Thanks again to everyone who answered my earlier questions about vista and
office 2007.
have a good day and God bless,
from Andrew

Hi Derek! This went to the list, but for some reason URLS were translated
into a.../a tags! Not sure what went on there, but thought I'd let you

 Hi all,

Not sure if this is Jaws related but it has certainly started ever
 since
 I
have downloaded the recent Jaws update. Basically, I am losing my start
 menu
function on my HP work station running Vista Business. The start menu
doesn't seem to function at all nor does the control and escape
 combination
work in Vista. The only way I can make it work is by restarting the
 machine
which is quite frustrating to be least said. I wonder if someone else
 has
come across a similar problem and could suggest any possible solutions?
 My
start menu is set to the default Vista start menu setting.

thought I was the only one using it, people on the list seem to mostly
 like
 xp.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and start menu in Vista

 Regards

 Waqas
