Well depending on what happens with AVG it looks like I'll be getting some
first hand experience myself.

Do you or anybody have information on BitDefender Internet Security 2008?
According to the spec sheet it is virtually the same as AVG internet

Some parts of it are accessible.
however a friend had it paid, and it still kept asking for
registering and unless it changed. its not a background scanner that
most are its a on demand type. Witch wouldn't keep any avid Internet user safe.

Re: [JAWS-Users] security software and anti virus programs

2008-03-30 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Hi, well if you're happy with AVG then that's fine for all of us,
however I've been using Avast! since, well, the beginning of this month,
and it's not screwed up my system one bit, so perhaps it was a very
early version that's caused this to happen on your PC, or it could be
that particular machine. My theory is, just because a programme screws
up one machine doesn't mean it will screw up another. I therefore
suggest you give it another try, and if it does screw up your system
you've always got System Restore as a last resort. I hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] security software and anti virus programs

2008-03-30 Thread David Griffith
In theory a good idea but in practice a little unrealistic at the moment I
think. sadly it looks like we may not be spoilt for choice and we may not
have this luxury.
.
In an ideal world we could line up a set of accessible comparable internet
security programs and find relative merits on security performance. With
Norton, MacAfee, AVG, and NOD32 all going inaccessible now to already add to
pre-existing inaccessible programs it's a pretty bleak outlook and it is
difficult to see what can be compared. I already had to remove the security
program that came with my PC as it was inaccessible. It actually rated
pretty highly in security terms but was useless as it kept on alerting me
and I could not do anything to respond to it.

Some people have recommended Avast on this list but I would personally be
reluctant to go back to this as it completely screwed up a PC of mine a few
years ago , I had to spend hours trying to change registry settings and I
had to eventually do a complete new windows install. Hopefully its not so
aggressive with its modification of windows now but it was a program I vowed
never to use again. I have heard some reports that Pccillen is still
accessible but I do not know much about this.

I am with AVG 7.5 for the time being and as long as I am not compelled to
move up to 8 I should b ok. I think all of us on this list using AVG should
send emails backing up the one that David sent.

I agree that accessibility is a major issue for those of us on this list,
however, it seems to me that the primary issue is whether or not the
software does an effective job. How do we evaluate the performance of these
several packages?

Re: [JAWS-Users] security software and anti virus programs

2008-03-29 Thread Flor Lynch
Marily,

Sometimes you need to quote the part of the original message you're replying
to, so that those of us on list can better adress the question. There are
two different, sometimes - but not necessarily - complementary questions
being discussed here: 1. Is the program accessible; 2. if so, how good is
the program at performing its core operation? (The two questions are
related because of our use of the program.) If someone lauds the
accessibility of a program, that does not automatically mean that the
program does a better job than its less- or non-accessible fellow at what it
does as its core operation. AFB program reviews, as I understand them, are
tailored more towards evaluating their accessibility for us users.

Most likely the main stream groups aren't going to evaluate accessibility

Cytrl+tab is your friendly keystroke. In the list view in the Control
Center, when you arrow down to Settings, then ctrl+tab to the Setup tab.
The first setting is Graphics. If on, uncheck it to off. It doesn't really
make that much difference - it's just a little less clutter.

I purchased a two year subscription for Nod32 because it was suppose to be
good for not taking up a lot of system resources. It at least in my view is
very hard to navigate around in either the Nod32 program or the Nod32
control panel. There is something in there to set grafficks to off because
the default is set to on but I have not been able to turn this feature to
off. Even my sighted girlfriend can not turn the dern thing to off. I am
folowing this thread very closely. As soon as I can I am going to switch to
something Jaws friendly and more accessible.

Re: [JAWS-Users] security software and anti virus programs

2008-03-28 Thread Richard Hutcheson
David, and others: While we are concerned about internet security packages
that conflict with our adaptive programs, shouldn't we also contact Jaws
and/or Windoweyes. Don't they also have a responsibility to see that their
programs are compactible with major antivirus software?

Re: [JAWS-Users] security software and anti virus programs

2008-03-28 Thread Leonard Morris
I purchased a two year subscription for Nod32 because it was suppose to be
good for not taking up a lot of system resources. It at least in my view is
very hard to navigate around in either the Nod32 program or the Nod32
control panel. There is something in there to set grafficks to off because
the default is set to on but I have not been able to turn this feature to
off. Even my sighted girlfriend can not turn the dern thing to off. I am
folowing this thread very closely. As soon as I can I am going to switch to
something Jaws friendly and more accessible.

Hi:

I know a JAWS tech who likes nod32. I'm not sure I spelled that correctly, but
that's how it sounds. It might be a good one to check into for your list.

Re: [JAWS-Users] security software and anti virus programs

2008-03-28 Thread Don and Cher Bosch
I've been successfully using BitDefender Antivirus Plus v10 for about 18
months. It's an entire suite, was highly recommended by
Cnet, and is totally accessible by selecting the components from the system
tray. It costs $50 for a license for 2 computers for two years. Not bad!
The only time I've had to use the JAWS cursor was when configuring a
scheduled scan.

So if I am following this thread correctly AVG 8 is no longer accessible. If
memory serves Norton hasn't been accessible for a few years already. Nod 32
has stopped being usable by screen readers, and MacAfee hasn't been an issue
for a long time. So the question is what are we supposed to do in order to
protect ourselves from the nasty people of the world. Can I stay with AVG
7.5 or are they going to try and force me to upgrade? There is also this
program called something like CA or near to that name, any ideas on that out
there?

Re: [JAWS-Users] security software and anti virus programs

2008-03-25 Thread Carlene Knight
I wonder if we could contact Grisoft, or if they would even care. I've had
really good luck with AVG, and so far they haven't made us upgrade. I'm still
getting the updates daily, so hopefully that will continue. Does AVG run with
JAWS, or is it the message center that's inaccessible? The reason I'm asking
this question is that my husband is sighted, but everything is already set up to
run.

Re: [JAWS-Users] security software and anti virus programs

2008-03-25 Thread Max Robinson
I started out using Windows live one care when it first came out. It wasn't
very accessible but it was so automatic I didn't have to interact with it
very much. Then one day, six months into my year subscription, it crashed
and a message said I had to go to the Microsoft web site to reinstall it.
They wanted another 100 plus dollars to renew. I said to heck with that and
got rid of what was left on my computer.

Regards.

Re: [JAWS-Users] security software and anti virus programs

2008-03-25 Thread Max Robinson
The install screens were navigable with the JAWS cursor. I can't speak to
the actual program because I haven't got it to work yet. That's why I
contacted tech support.

Re: [JAWS-Users] security software and anti virus programs

2008-03-25 Thread Max Robinson
It's not Grisoft anymore. The URL is now

http://www.avg.com

The street address of the headquarters is at the top of the home page. I
suppose if all else fails you could write them a letter. Go to the bottom
of that page and you will find a link to contact. I didn't check out all
the possible branches because I was looking for technical support. Their
might be general contact information there.

Re: [JAWS-Users] security software and anti virus programs

2008-03-25 Thread Flor Lynch
Marilyn,
I'm afraid they don't offer tech support to their free users - they
specifically say this on the Web site: ["What you Get (with the free
version) What you do not get".] You have to be a paying customer to
qualify for that. Now, it is possible athat something else or some other
contact avenue can be pursued. It is, after all, the developers - not the
tech support people - who could be called on this. It's also possible that
others here will know more and better than I.

Although I am not [yet] using NOD32 version 3, latest info I've heard is

So if I am following this thread correctly AVG 8 is no longer accessible. If
memory serves Norton hasn't been accessible for a few years already. Nod 32
has stopped being usable by screen readers, and MacAfee hasn't been an issue
for a long time. So the question is what are we supposed to do in order to
protect ourselves from the nasty people of the world. Can I stay with AVG
7.5 or are they going to try and force me to upgrade? There is also this
program called something like CA or near to that name, any ideas on that out
there?

Re: [JAWS-Users] security software and anti virus programs

2008-03-25 Thread David Ferrin
I'm using the paid version of their security package. In fact I agree that
letting them know of our concerns is a good idea at least in my opinion.
Think about it if you will, I operate no less than 3 fairly high traffic
mailing lists totaling over 700 people all of them being potential customers
of AVG. So my thinking is that if everybody concerned mention the amount of
people we have contact with through this and other forums that just might
get their attention. Consider it if you will folks. Mean while just in case
it's time to start looking for an alternative to my current security system,
and I just spent all of that time doing the tutorial.

dDavid, you are using the avg security suite of three, right? In my
opinion, we should use avgfree v. 7.5 as long as possible and then switch to
something better if that is possible. However, perhaps the Grisoft folks
are not aware of our problems and would try to fix them if we let them know

Re: [JAWS-Users] security software and anti virus programs

2008-03-25 Thread Patricia Dunbar
Oh man, that is going to be a problem for me come May when my current Norton
runs out..
Now I noticed when I purchased this program, Spam Fighter that they offered
a antivirus program as well as spyware protection, but the downside is that
the program isn't real screen reader friendly. It's duable, but at times I
wish I didn't have to go to all the hassle to try to use the menus.
I wonder if we contacted them and ask them like add aware is suppose to be
making their new program accessible. I received an email from the spam
fighter group welcoming me to the program and at that time I did explain my
situation in detail, but haven't heard anything back..

Re: [JAWS-Users] security software and anti virus programs

2008-03-25 Thread David Ferrin
So it's definitely confirmed that AVG version 8 is out of the question? In
that case I need to find another option in the next 4 months before my
subscription runs out. I could always go back to sygate personal or
professional firewall. Granted the pro version I have never tried. It's the
anti virus and spy ware deal that is annoying me right now.

Interesting in that I have not heard of this anti virus program before.
Fortunately I am in no major need of a Spam blocking program since I can

Now of course if there are any other suggestions out there bring them on as

Hi, David, and list!

I am glad, to tell you, that it are good programms, to protect your PC.
The one is avira antivir edition personal classic.
You can download it from
www.avira.com
It is the best, It removed for me lots of viruses.
You can subscribe on a newsletter, they say, what they updated.
Avira is the best. I use it, and I am a glad user of that.
And next to avira, it is recommended, to use superantispyware professional.
And last, a good spam washer, the spam fighter, and you are protected from
all the warms.
If your system is big, you can have spybot search and destroy, or kerio
personal firewall.
But it does not needed for a small system, it only hangs the system on.
God bless!

[JAWS-Users] security software and anti virus programs

2008-03-25 Thread David Ferrin
So if I am following this thread correctly AVG 8 is no longer accessible. If
memory serves Norton hasn't been accessible for a few years already. Nod 32 has
stopped being usable by screen readers, and MacAfee hasn't been an issue for a
long time. So the question is what are we supposed to do in order to protect
ourselves from the nasty people of the world. Can I stay with AVG 7.5 or are
they going to try and force me to upgrade? There is also this program called
something like CA or near to that name, any ideas on that out there?
