Usually a key that changes the function keys mode is on the upper right of the keyboard. It toggles between the two modes of the function keys. Try to play with all the keys that you don't know what they do. Hopefully you have the toggle button. Hello there; If you go into control panel, You will land on the search edit, If you tab one time you may hear, Small or large icons, If you press spacebar, up arrow, you will hear, cadigory, Press enter. Now, if you tab you should find hardware and sound, However, there's no setting to change the function key behavior. At least I haven't found such setting on a dell laptop. Hello there; As I indicated to you, you will need some sighted assistance to change the FNKey behavior, since your going in to the BIOS, where there's no speech available. If you have sighted help, Then, try the following; 1. Press F2 button when you see Dell Logo at the start up, You'll enter into BIOS. 2. Navigate to Advanced Settings Function Key Behavior. 3. You'll see its default value as MULTIMEDIA KEY FIRST. 4. Change it to FUNCTION KEY FIRST. 5. Save settings by pressing F10, You are done Now you will need to restart laptop. I want to make that the secondary function of the f 12 key and let the Jaws key f12 speak the time and date as it did on my old computer. Is this a possibility? How would one accomplish this task? Just a simple question... Don't you have a keyboard button that can change function keys from multimedia to normal function keys without going into the BIOS??? Try to play with the keyboard, specially on the upper right side, and hopefully will find a key that will change the mode to normal function keys. When I googled 'unlock function' one of the alternatives was to use shift-f11. that didn't work for me. But the mobility center did. Hi Sarah, I don't know if you have a special key to change from multimedia to normal function keys, but it can not hurt to try to find the key in case you have it on your keyboard. Usually a key that changes the function keys mode is on the upper right of the keyboard. It toggles between the two modes of the function keys. Try to play with all the keys that you don't know what they do. Hopefully you have the toggle button. Have to read the docs on that laptop and see what reverts the FN key back to defaults. All laptops are different for that key. I had the same thing with my new Dell. In Windows 7, go to Windows mobile device center. there is somewhere a choice between media and function, and media is chosen but you want function. JAWS won't read it on this computer, so you might need someone who can. My daughter clicked mine, and the keys went back to the way I wanted them. Good luck! Since our computers are different brands, this might not be the case for you. volume down and volume up keys were f8 and f9, and the mute key on mine was f7, and of course I pushed it. Oops! I had this issue on another HP laptop. It sets the function keys differently. But, I can't find the documentation on how to fix it on this computer.
