Re: [JAWS-Users] Unable to Change Google Search Settings

2013-09-07 Thread Steve
I resisted, but you are wrong, Scorpio. If you don't use any of the Google
features, and just go to Google.com, you are talking apples when Flor is
talking oranges.

I, like Flor, am a Googlegroups owner. They specifically don't support IE8
any longer, they encourage you to use their Chrome browser or at a minimum a
Crhome Plug-in tool for IE. That plug-in has caused some issues with other
people that you can see by doing a search.

To be able to continue managing my groups, I have to use Firefox instead.
Even that is not perfect, but that is a Google interface design issue, at
least with Firefox the group management function can be accomplished if not
smoothly, unlike in IE where it can't be done. (NOTE: I haven't tried IE10
to see if Google GRoups is happier with that version yet.)

Mozilla says you should install their browser because it's open source and

Apple says you should install Safari for a wonderful browsing experience.

Before these, you had the turf war between Internet Explorer and Netscape

Regardless of what internet turf war your referring to, the fact is the
same, the webpage does not change.

I've never experienced that which you describe with Google telling me I

better experience.

I have never used any other Google page but the one I use now,
http://www.google.com/ and I have always signed in to have my preferences

In any case, I still maintain that this is a computer specific problem,

I have a multitude of friends running Windows XP, Internet Explorer 8, and

believe I mentioned in my previous message that I was using Jaws on all
three systems running all three platforms. I have also pasted the message

Hi listers. Using IE 8 with XP and JAWS 9, I discovered this morning
that Google.com has apparently changed its home page yet again, and now
I am unable to change my preferences on the search settings page. There
seems to be no way to turn Google Instant on or off like there used to
be, nor is there any apparent way to change the number of results per
page from the default value of 10. And I could not find any button to
save the search preferences. I tried with the virtual PC cursor on and
off (Insert Z), but nothing seems to work. I was last able to
successfully change my search settings a few days ago. I think I heard a
brief message that my browser was outdated and no longer supported or
something like that, which , of course is nonsense, because IE 8 is the
latest bersion supported by XP. Does anyone have any idea what's going
on with Google? Are they conspiring with MS to force us to upgrade to
Windows 8? Is there any way to change the number of results per page and
insure that Google Instant is turned off, short of switching to Firefox,
which I despise and use only for its Webvisum function? Thanks.

Gerald

of my IE 8 Google home page and the prefix is HTTPS, not the usual HTTP,
as it used to be. This leads me to believe that Google has indeed made
changes to it Search Settings page for IE 8 that have rendered it
inaccessible. I have had cookies enabled all along, so my inability to
change my preferences on the Search Settings page is probably not an
issue with cookies. And comparing the Search Settings page that comes
up with IE 8 versus the one that comes up with Firefox 17, I noticed
that the IE 8 version has a heading labled "Google Instant Predictions",
whereas the Firefox version has no such heading. Plus theGoogle home

different versions of its home page depending on which browser accesses
it. I suspect that Google has deliberately disabled the Search Settings

to Chrome or Firefox or IE 9 or 10, which of course, requires upgrading
to Windows 7 or 8.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Unable to Change Google Search Settings

2013-09-07 Thread Flor Lynch

Scorpio,

As others have indicated, there is the matter of whether you have
cookies turned on or not, and that does have a bearing on your results
from Google. if you have a GMail account and sign into GMail on the Web,
as many blind people do, or if you are a googlegroup owner, as some
blind folk are, that also does alter your Google experience. Indeed, you
begin to see why Google 'recommend' Chrome. Google Chrome works quite
well with JAWS14, and i have used both. Firefox however - as i have
previously indicated - offers better keyboard support overall than
Chrome, and I have compared both. So that blind users of Chrome might
find, upon more familiarlity with Firefox (which is still quite like
Internet Explorer) that, if they used Firefox instead, their experience
with FF may be more rewarding than what they get with Chrome. Lower
versions of JAWS do not support Chrome.

Apple says you should install Safari for a wonderful browsing experience.

Before these, you had the turf war between Internet Explorer and Netscape
Navigator.

Regardless of what internet turf war your referring to, the fact is the
same, the webpage does not change.

I've never experienced that which you describe with Google telling me I
should install Chrome, nor have they ever suggested that it would be a far
better experience.

I have never used any other Google page but the one I use now,
http://www.google.com/ and I have always signed in to have my preferences
loaded.

In any case, I still maintain that this is a computer specific problem, and
has nothing to do with Google, or the Internet.

I have a multitude of friends running Windows XP, Internet Explorer 8, and
lower versions of Jaws, and they manage just fine, including myself, as I
believe I mentioned in my previous message that I was using Jaws on all
three systems running all three platforms. I have also pasted the message
you wrote where I inferred my original statement, lest there be any
confusion.

I should also mention that there are many blind people who use Chrome
instead of Internet Explorer or any other browser just fine and without any
problem.

Google want you to download & install their own browser, Chrome. Firefox
is like it and, for several of our purposes, replicates Chrome nearly
and more accessibly, as well as having better keyboard support for
functionalities.

Hi listers. Using IE 8 with XP and JAWS 9, I discovered this morning that
Google.com has apparently changed its home page yet again, and now I am
unable to change my preferences on the search settings page. There seems
to be no way to turn Google Instant on or off like there used to be, nor
is there any apparent way to change the number of results per page from
the default value of 10. And I could not find any button to save the
search preferences. I tried with the virtual PC cursor on and off (Insert
Z), but nothing seems to work. I was last able to successfully change my
search settings a few days ago. I think I heard a brief message that my
browser was outdated and no longer supported or something like that, which
, of course is nonsense, because IE 8 is the latest bersion supported by
XP. Does anyone have any idea what's going on with Google? Are they
conspiring with MS to force us to upgrade to Windows 8? Is there any way
to change the number of results per page and insure that Google Instant is
turned off, short of switching to Firefox, which I despise and use only
for its Webvisum function? Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Unable to Change Google Search Settings

2013-09-06 Thread Flor Lynch
It isn't a question of whether something is simply true or not here. I
didn't say (nor did anyone else here) that google was 'forcing' users to
install Chrome. they are, however, making it plain when you use IE8 that
it is no longer supported, suggesting that you use a modern browser, and
recommending the Google browser Chrome. And, i'm talking about the
Google pages and Google interface in general, not just the search
results numbers, and also if one is a Google group owner and GMail user
as I am.

This is simply not true. I have never installed, nor used Chrome, or
any other browser save for Internet Explorer for my Google searches.
As I said, short of using Firefox for solving CAPTCHA's and other
verification codes, all my Google searches are performed on Internet
Explorer. Google has never forced me to install Chrome, or any
toolbar or anything like that.

I do admit that I have set my search provider to Google when Internet
Explorer asked me which search provider I wanted to choose from, so
this may be one of the possible reasons for my success with Google
searches.

Having said that though, when ever I get onto another computer that
does not have my settings installed, I simply sign into Google, and my
settings are remembered for my account, and I get the same settings as
on my home computer.

I don't know if this is specific to account settings, but, as i said,
once I sign in, regardless of who's computer I'm on, when I sign in to
Google, my settings get reverted to my home settings of 100 results
per page, and links opening up in a new window or tab.

Maybe you can try creating an account with Google, then setting your
preferences. Just a thought.

Now if your going to google.com you will get same page. However if
you have a Dell computer. Then your page may differ because after the
/ it will send you to a different page. Just like it does with
google.com/accessible. Other name brand computers might have this
deal with google like Dell not sure. Also it depends on if you except
cookies or not. You will get a different page.

Settings page than the one I am now getting with IE 8. The Firefox
Search Settings page is completely accessible, unlike the IE 8

Okay, which version of IE are you using? With IE 8, there are no
radio buttons , or combo boxes under any of the headings to select

Hi, It does act a little weird.
I find that I have to use the enter key on the items. For number of
results I hit enter on the link and then I can arrow through the numbers.
The same with turn off instant results, I hit enter and it goes into forms

To save the settings I found that you need to use the jaws cursor find the

One way around the google preference issue is to set your
preferences via the URL. I have the following URL saved as a favorite:

http://www.google.com/?newwindow=1&complete=0&num=20

That URL sets my preferences for Instant search to off, 20
results per page, and open each result in a new window.

Google stores your preferences in a cookie, that is why I suggested

overriding placing the preferences in the URL, not how the preferences

Re: [JAWS-Users] Unable to Change Google Search Settings

2013-09-06 Thread Scorpio
This is simply not true. I have never installed, nor used Chrome, or any
other browser save for Internet Explorer for my Google searches. As I said,
short of using Firefox for solving CAPTCHA's and other verification codes,
all my Google searches are performed on Internet Explorer. Google has never
forced me to install Chrome, or any toolbar or anything like that.

I do admit that I have set my search provider to Google when Internet
Explorer asked me which search provider I wanted to choose from, so this may
be one of the possible reasons for my success with Google searches.

Having said that though, when ever I get onto another computer that does not
have my settings installed, I simply sign into Google, and my settings are
remembered for my account, and I get the same settings as on my home
computer.

I don't know if this is specific to account settings, but, as i said, once I
sign in, regardless of who's computer I'm on, when I sign in to Google, my
settings get reverted to my home settings of 100 results per page, and links
opening up in a new window or tab.

Maybe you can try creating an account with Google, then setting your
preferences. Just a thought.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Unable to Change Google Search Settings

2013-09-06 Thread Scorpio

Hi Gerald,

I don't think Google is changing anything to match any browsers.

The fact is, the page stays the same, and I think it's your settings that
have changed.

The first thing I would do is restore my default settings for Internet
Explorer and Jaws. You can do this by going into the Internet Options, then
doing a control+tab to the advance page, and tabbing to the restore default
settings button, and pressing the spacebar. You'll receive some warning
about things being reverted back and if you're sure you want to do this, so
just press the spacebar on the yes or ok button.

Once you've done that, attempt to go to Google again, and see if the
settings have changed.

If they have, then you know something has screwed with your settings, and
you have to find out which program did this.

If you aren't able to deduce which program is the culprit, I would run some
scans to make sure your computer is completely clean of Malware, Viruses and
spyware, then set Internet Explorer and Jaws according to your settings,
making sure to do a Google search every so often to see if one of the
changes you made changes the Google display in any way.

As for myself, I am using Jaws, version 14, Internet Explorer 8, 9 and 10,
on three different computers, an XP computer, a Vista computer, and a
Windows 7 computer, respectively, and I can honestly report that I have the
same experience on all three computers when I do a Google search. As i said
in my previous message, this may be due to the fact that I have signed into
my account, and no, this is not a Gmail account, as I use my regular e-mail
account to sign into Google, or it may be due to the fact that I have
selected Google as my default search provider, but one thing's for sure,
something has been knocked out of whack on your computer, and you just have
to pinpoint what that something is.

Good luck.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Unable to Change Google Search Settings

2013-09-06 Thread Gerald Levy

It seems that not only does Google serve up different Search Settings pages
depending on which server you hit, it also appears to serve up different
Search Settings pages depending on which browser you use. Using Firefox 17,
I get a completely different Search Settings page than the one I am now
getting with IE 8. The Firefox Search Settings page is completely
accessible, unlike the IE 8 page. I suspect that Google no longer supports
IE 8 and is pushing users to upgrade to IE 9 or 10.

I am using IE8 and jaws 14 latest build on XP SP3
I don't know what going on then. I have noticed in the past that I will
look at google at home and then when I get to work I open it and it will
be different from the one I saw at home. Does it serve up different pages
depending on what server you hit?

Okay, which version of IE are you using? With IE 8, there are no radio
buttons , or combo boxes under any of the headings to select the option
you want. And there is no button to save your preferences. Everything
worked fine on Monday, so at least for IE 8, the format and layout of the
Search Settings page seems to have been changed since then.

Google want you to download & install their own browser, Chrome. Firefox

That URL sets my preferences for Instant search to off, 20 results per
