RE: speaking "cell" in internet explorer tables

2015-11-13 Thread Londa Peterson via Jfw
Hi Barbara,

This is really strange. Turning off smart navigation shouldn't make a page
unreadable. I think thisw might be a job for FS tech support.

If I turn smart navigation off, JAWS can't read the web page at all.

If I turn it to controls it reads the word "cell" If I have it on control
and table I can arrow through but it keeps reading the name of the row as I
cross each cell which I don't' wish it to do.

According to Eric Damery on Main Menu, that has been taken out. That may be
for the next update though. Do you have smart navigation turned on? If so,
see if turning that off helps.

I just upgraded to JAWS 17 and am having issues with how JAWS handles tables
in internet explorer.

I have two websites which are made up of tables, one is for our email and
JAWS used to put the name of the sender, the subject , the date etc on
separate lines so I could read it easily and click on the button to open it.
Now JFW 17 puts it all on one line and says "cell" "cell" which is pretty
annoying. Any hints for this?
Thanks!

Hi Londa,
Yes I have. It works very well in IE and Firefox, but with Chrome, it is
much better for some reason to have forms mode switched to manual. I tried
Chrome with semi forms mode, and for some reason, the search edit box is not

always there. With manual forms mode on, the search edit box is always right

there and when you press enter to go into forms mode, you can edit what you
put in the search box. Take care.

Hi,
Chrome has changed a great deal in the past two years. It is a different
experience totally using it now compared to even a year ago. I will have my
tutorial ready this week after I look at many different web pages and work
with it in many situations. I can tell you that all the navigation html
commands in JAWS work in chrome. Navigating a web page is very similar to
working in IE or Firefox. One thing I have found out is that Chrome works
much much better if forms mode is set to manual. If forms mode is set to
automatic, JAWS keeps going into forms mode on Chrome. You can set this
temporarily in Chrome, and change it back. Take care and I will have much
more for you this week.

I certainly hope FS will take Chrome on to improve its workability with

Does anyone have a sense of what Google's commitment to accessibility is?

Hi Dennis,
I am the original person who said that Google Chrome is totally accessible.
My name is David Moore. Well, I didn't litterly mean totally accessible, and

I was very excited after working with Chrome after two days. I got carried
away. When I saw just how much more accessible Chrome has become in the last

two years, I wondered why the blind think that it is still totally
inaccessible. A lot of Chrome is accessible, much more than the blind
realize. Dennis, It is because of what you said that I have mentioned Chrome

on so many lists, and I am encouraging the blind to try it to see for
themselves just how far its accessibility has come. It still needs work, I
know. But I am asking the same question. Why is Freedom Scientific not
putting as much work into making Chrome accessible since it is by far the
most used browser in colleges and employment. It makes me wonder and I want
the blind to think about this question. I will keep quiet and just leave it
right there. By the way, Chrome is just as accessible with NVDA as it is
with JAWS. Also, the more tools you have the better off people are. Google
Chrome may not be to the point yet to make it your default browser, but it
is a good third browser to use. It is good to have two or three screen
readers as well. When it comes to streaming TV channels and so on, Chrome
beats IE and Firefox hands down. It never crashes once on me. I use Chrome
more than IE, because IE crashes almost every time I stream video with it.
It will not even open a large web site. Chrome opens large sites twice as
fast as IE. Many web sites are accessible with Chrome. I am glad people are
realizing it. If I caused a few people to try Chrome, I have done my job
which is to help all and bring what is hidden into the light. I am
contacting Freedom Scientific on Monday and asking a lot of questions about
making Chrome totally accessible and why it hasn't been done already. I urge

all of you to do the same. Enjoy Chrome for what it can do, not for what it
can not do. T

IE 11 and JAWS 16 and 17. I typically use the B key to find the various

If you are using MS Office, there are two clipboards: One is the
windows clipboard which by default retains one and only one item; the
second is the Office clipboard, reached as barbara said with alt-h,
then f, then o. the office clipboard aledgedly holds 24 distinct
items, any of which can be retrieved. In my experience copying to
the Office clipboard isn't always reliable. sometimes I have two
items when I should have three, for example. Nonetheless, it is
available if you have Office. JAWS appends to the windows clipboard,
rather than the Office clipboard.

RE: keystrokes vs virtual ribbons

2015-10-12 Thread Londa Peterson via Jfw
In the virtual ribbons, you can use first letter navigationh instead. The
ribbon keystrokes don't work with the virtual ribbons on. If there is more
than one thing that starts with the same letter, just navigate to the item
you want and then press enter. Hope this helps.

Subject: keystrokes vs virtual ribbons

Using the virtual ribbon, there is a way to know what are the keystrokes
associated with each item in the ribbons?

Use the ribbons helps a lot to understand the structure of the ribbons, with
the virtual ribbon off, is time consuming and is very easy to get lost
navigating with the tab key only. But with the virtual ribbons on, the
keystrokes doesn't work, and sometimes I don't know what is worse, if the
virtual ribbons on or off. But if I need to get to a place in the ribbon, I
have no way to learn the keystrokes, only deactivating the virtual ribbons
and pressing tab many many times, and probably getting lost.

So I see both ways very inconvenient.

Is there a way to get the keystrokes and at the same time keeping the logic
structure of the ribbons,?

I am trying to teach people to use MS word, and excel, but the ribbons is
very hard to make them understand the structure of each ribbons, but the
ribbon as unique tool using these programs is not going to be so efficient
in the future either.

So there is a way to get the keystrokes when we are navigating through the
virtual ribbons, and like this once we know where and what is the structure
of the ribbons, just use the keystrokes associated with each item on the
ribbons?

Thanks

I'm running Jaws 16.

I'm looking for a laptop that doesn't have touch-screen capabilities but
works well with Jaws 16.

I want the laptop to have all the keys a desktop keyboard would have,
except the numeric keypad. Should have at least 4gb of ram and a fast

One I'm looking at right now is an Acer Aspire ES1 512 P0SY Notebook

Thanks.

RE: using jaws16 with windows10?

2015-09-01 Thread Londa Peterson via Jfw
JAWS 16 is working fairly well with Windows 10 on my laptop. It's certainly
much more than minimal. If JAWS 16 latest build isn't working well for you,
you need to uninstall and reinstall it. It will work much better after that.

Hello to new Windows 10 users,

I just upgraded my 5 year old laptop to Windows 10. It had Windows 7 and
it had a WiFi connection so I didn't need to figure out how to make a
net connection.

I chose to upgrade preserving all the existing files and applications.
That part worked.

Now some notes to keep in mind.

The current version of JAWS 16 works minimally. The latest version of
NVDA 2015.3 works much better.

To the person asking the question. How did you get JAWS into your new
laptop? Install NVDA 2015.3 to get more use out of Windows 10 until JAWS
16 and 17 come out.

In Windows 10, the Windows key + i will bring up the setting list. But
JAWS might not help.

I am guessing, the sheveron button (system tray) might give a connection
path. Press the Windows-logo key and then close the start menu with ESCAPE.

Then tab to the sheveron button and then arrow down or right. There
might be a network item to select.

Opening the start menu by pressing the Windows logo key will have the
edit field. JAWS 16 will not announce this. NVDA does and with NVDA you
can arrow down through a list. JAWS 16 cannot do this.

Maybe other Windows 10 users will have more advice.

RE: Correction: How To Configure Either The Windows 10 or Windows 8 Shutdown Menu To Truly Turn Off Your Computer

I've had this same experience with JAWS in demo mode. A restart will reset
the clock on the demo. By the way, does disabling fast start have any effect
on a laptop's battery? I find that I'll shut my computer down and unplug it
to take it somewhere, and when I get there I find that the battery has
drained-sometimes quite significantly. Would disabling fast start fix this?

Fast Startup should also be disabled if you are running JAWS (or any FS
products) in 40 minute demo mode because the system must shut down
completely in order for the clock in the demo software to reset. I found
this out the hard way when I purchased my laptop running Windows 8 and had
to temporarily use the JAWS demo before activating the software.

Now that I am using the paid release, though, I personally would never
disable fast startup because, as the name implies, my computer boots up much
faster than it would after a full shut down.

Hi Daniel,
Unfortunately, this isn't available on Windows 7, as Hybrid Boot was
introduced with Windows 8.x.
Regarding having Fast Startup on or off: it depends on your needs. You
should not use Fast Startup if:
* You are using multi-boot setup - other operating systems besides Windows
8.x/10 installed. This is more so on MACBooks and other computers.
* You are doing frequent hardware upgrades. If you do enable Fast Startup,
it'll not recognize new hardware, as Windows will think it is running on the
old hardware.
* Your disk space is precious. Hybrid Boot (Fast Startup) will use some disk
space (just enough for Windows system components to hibernate).
You might try using Fast Startup if:
* You need your computer to boot in seconds. Reports claim Windows 8 boots
in as little as seven seconds with Fast Startup turned on.
* Your computer uses UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface; to find
out, from Windows 8.x and later, from Start, type System Information).
Cheers,
Joseph

Hello Everyone,

Joe is quite correct. I did use the incorrect term to describe how to truly
shut down a computer.

I should never compose emails after 11:00pm (smile).

Below you will find the steps as previously posted but with the correct
terminology. I apologize for any confusion I may have caused.

By the way, as to the question of should one disable the Fast-Startup
feature; the only reason this topic got on-list was because someone asked
why Jaws kept announcing itself when she/he shut down the PC.

The following steps will work in both Windows 10 and Windows 8.x in order to
disable the Fast-startup option. Doing this will allow your computer to
truly be shut-down as it was in Windows 7 and earlier.

To disable Fast-startup, do the following:

1.
Access Windows 10 Power Options. This can easily be achieved using several
methods:
a.
Right click in the lower left corner of the screen (or simultaneously press
the Windows + X keys). This will bring up an 'Admin' menu. Simply select
Power Options from that menu.
b.
From within the Desktop; navigate to Control PanelPower Options.
Or c.
From within the Start Screen; type power, click on Settings, and select
Power Options from the list of results:

2.
In the 'Power Options' window; click on Choose what the power buttons do
(from the left hand panel):

3.
In the new window; click on Change settings that are currently unavailable:

4.
Uncheck Fast-startup.

That's all there is to it.

Enjoy,

Mark

First letter navigation does work in the virtual ribbon. I don't mean the
Office shortcuts; I mean true first letter navigation. If there is more than
one item starting with the same letter, you will have to press enter on the
one you want. The only thing I like about virtual ribbons is the fact that
it is very easy to see the groups because they show in submenus. I teach
students, and I always show them both ways to navigate the ribbons and lay
out the pros and cons of both very clearly so that they can make their own
informed decision. I'm all about choice when it comes to computers.

Hi, Les. The argument for not unchecking the Virtual Ribbon is this:
JAWS put in the Virtual Ribbon for those who wanted to manually navigate
the ribbons using the arrows and the Tab key. It is supposed to make the
menus more accessible, but I haven't found this to be true in most
 instances.

Brad was saying that people may say to uncheck the Virtual Ribbon without
telling the person the down side of unchecking the Virtual Ribbon. This
 may
be true. However, some of the techs at FS tell you to check the Virtual
Ribbon, without telling you that this blocks the function of some of the

Press JAWS KEY plus F2. Arrow down to Settings Center and press Enter.
Press the letter M until it says Miscellaneous. Press Right Arrow to

Arrow down to Virtual Ribbon Menu. It will probably tell you that this
setting is unavailable except in the default configuration of JAWS.

To load the default configuration: Press Shift plus Control plus the

Once your default configuration is loaded, you can Press the Up and
Down Arrow to see if your Virtual Ribbon Menu is checked or not. You
want it to be unchecked if you want all of the keyboard shortcuts to work

 If
it is checked, press the Space Bar to uncheck it. Then Tab to OK and

Hi. Word 2010 was always stable for me until the last few weeks. I've spoken
to my tech guy who says none of his clients are having this problem. I'm the
only one who has JAWS, which suggests the problem may lie with one of the
recent JAWS updates and its interaction with Word and other programs running
in the background.

I'll pause typing, and Word will announce it is closing. Usually it comes
back quickly, but my focus has shifted to the top of the document. Once in a
great while it doesn't come back, and I've lost some data this way.
Fortunately, I've long made a practice of saving every few minutes, so this
isn't a serious problem, but it is a distraction.

I located online instructions for running a Word 2010 repair, but my tech
guy discourages me from taking this step because he's convinced the problem
isn't with Word.

So, my question is whether anyone else has experienced problems along these
lines in recent weeks? I'd like to contact FS and not have them come back
with the standard, and I suppose understandable, We can't replicate... and
We haven't received reports..., etc.

RE: PDF documents

2015-07-21 Thread Londa Peterson via Jfw
If you mean using convenient OCR, I don't think it converts the pictures at
all. I've never had anyone look to be sure, but I know I have gotten
extraneous text at times that I thought was probably pictures that JAWS
tried to OCR. Convenient OCR just puts the text into a virtual viewer. You
can then paste it wherever you want.

Honestly my first choice is plain text, then RTF, followed by doc and

Plain text does have the disadvantage of not being able to deal with

Neither the regular or accessible kindle app REALLY works with jaws,
what THE accessible version does is detect that an accessibility
program is running (at least jaws, NVDA and window eyes are detected,

 Rick,
Did you get the Kindle for PC with Accessibility Plugin? If you
didn't
 download that version, go to

 http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200596280

and read the information on that page. There is also a download link.

With this version of the program, JAWS reads the menus, while the
 built-in

speech that comes with the program reads the text of the book.

If you are reading a novel or other book that you can read straight
 through,
the program works fairly well. However, if you need to go to
different
parts of a book or search for specific content, forget it. Navigation
 is
limited, and JAWS can't read the text in the book directly. The JAWS
 OCR
feature can give you access to the text of each page, but multiple
 columns

 cause reading difficulties.

If you have an iPhone or iPad, the iOS app works much better for
reading
 EBooks.

Hey guys, thanks for the discussion and info. It's good to know that first
letter navigation works with the virtual ribbon. I'll give that a try and
see if it weans me off the MS ribbon interface.

Which method works best probably depends on which one you learned first, or
have used most, over time. I think either one can be used efficiently. I
just wish there was an easy way to switch between them. I just used the new
v16 Search Command feature to look for a JAWS hot key to toggle virtual
ribbons on and off, and there is none as far as I can tell. The only way I
know to toggle it on and off is to use the Startup Wizard. This makes it
quite painful to toggle between interfaces. I imagine most users would want
to set this once and never change it, and I'm the only idiot who wants to
change it on the fly. Ha ha.

v16 Search Command feature to look for a JAWS hot key to toggle virtual
ribbons on and off, and there is none as far as I can tell. The only way I
know to toggle it on and off is to use the Startup Wizard. This makes it
quite painful to toggle between interfaces. I imagine most users would want
to set this once and never change it, and I'm the only idiot who wants to
change it on the fly. Ha ha.

It does come in handy on a computer that doesn't have Word though. I also
like the training tools that are included. It's a great way to teach
students how to handle various dialog controls and other such things. It's
certainly not a replacement for Word.

Dear All,

Here's my take on HJPad: If you have any version of Microsoft Word, there's
no need to use HJPad at all, unless you really want a word processor with
standard menus that has a spell checker. If you do choose to use HJPad,
however, it probably won't help you at work or school because of the lack of
advanced features like tables, footnotes and endnotes, comments and track
changes, etc.

how to use them, and I make sure my students do as well. I just find it
easier to get at some of the options that are buried deep in submenus easier

I believe you are talking about the virtual ribbon. FS created that to be
used by those who had ribbonfolbia. Which is a fear of using the ribbon.
There was allot of that when the ribbon first came out. The virtual ribbon
creates a sort of XP menu style which is substituted for the ribbon itself.

Thanks, everyone.

Now here's a slightly related question. MS has their own keyboard interface
for the ribbon UI, as in Alt then H, O, I. But you can also turn on the
JAWS rinnon UI to make the ribbon feel more like a system of menus and
submenus. I can see how both might be useful, but they seem to be mutually
exclusive. When I turn on the JAWS ribbon UI, the MS ribbon keyboard
inbterface seems to stop working.

Does anyone know how to set up JAWS so that both the MS interface and the
JAWS interface to the ribbon UI are available? Then I could choose to use
one or the other interface, depending on which is most convenient, personal
preference, etc.

My guess is that this is simply not possible. I have to choose one or the
other.

RE: Virtual vs. Ribbon: was JAWS Shortcut for column sizing

2015-05-13 Thread Londa Peterson via Jfw
Thanks Dave,

I should've changed it. Actually you can use true first letter navigation in
the virtual ribbons. You still have to press enter when you find the item
you want, but you can press the first letter of that item until you find it.
If you remember a lot of the Word shortcuts, though, the regular ribbons are
better. I don't remember very many of them, so I use hot keys that I've
known forever. I also use a lot of the Office 2003 shortcuts which still
work. I also highly customize my quick access toolbar. There are certainly
pro's and con's no matter which way you go.

the Virtual menus, because they do not support first-letter navigation as do
standard menus. Therefore I stick to the ribbon and just learn how to use
it.

Enhancements in JAWS 16.0.2339 (April 2015)

The following is a list of improvements made between the JAWS 16
release on April 9, 2015, and the April 29, 2015 update.

To download the latest release, visit the Downloads web page.

 JAWS
.For customers who use JAWS 16 and MAGic 13 together, we resolved an
issue that was discovered in the previous update where MAGic's Mouse
Echo feature was not working as expected when JAWS 16 was running.
.Worked with Smarter Balance Testing group in order to make some
adjustments in how JAWS is working with the tests being conducted in
many of the schools throughout the US.
.In addition to detecting math that is rendered using MathJax in
Internet Explorer, JAWS now detects Math content that is directly
included in the HTML of a web page in both Internet Explorer and Firefox.
.The contents of the Math Viewer are now displayed visually on the screen.

The Math Viewer is accessed by pressing ENTER when JAWS encounters
math content on a web page. As the equation is navigated using the
ARROW keys, each expression or partial expression is highlighted so a
sighted assistant can easily track visually, what JAWS is speaking.
.Based on customer feedback, JAWS is now much more responsive when
reading long and complex mathematical expressions rendered by MathJax.
.Resolved a reported issue where JAWS was not recognizing math content
in Internet Explorer on Wikipedia when the Wikipedia user account was
set to render math using MathJax.
.Improved how JAWS pronounces various mathematical functions so they
are spoken using more natural language.
.The Technology News from CNET Research It lookup source now works as
it did in JAWS 15, displaying as many as 20 articles.
.If both JAWS and MAGic are running, resolved an issue where pressing
the Text Viewer toggle key on the MAGic Keyboard was not working.
.Resolved reported issues using the Find feature (CTRL+F) in FSReader.
.A customer reported that if focus was in a Windows security dialog
and speech was off, braille was not working as expected and JAWS was
creating several untitled voice profiles. This is now fixed.

 Microsoft Excel
.When focused in the Font edit combo box, addressed a reported issue
where the location of the cursor was not being shown in braille.
.Resolved a reported issue where JAWS was not reading the list of
column headers in the Sort dialog box.
.Addressed an issue where information was not being displayed
correctly in braille in certain spreadsheets when the braille mode was
 set to Current Row.
.Addressed a reported issue with suggestions in the spell checker not
 being read as expected.

 Microsoft Internet Explorer
.If you are inside an application region on a web page in both
Internet Explorer and Firefox, it is now necessary to press the PC
cursor command (NUM PAD PLUS) twice quickly to turn off Forms mode and
return to the Virtual PC cursor. This change was made to keep users
from inadvertently leaving Forms mode while interacting with controls
inside application regions which require Forms mode remain

time. I understand the reasoning behind it, but you still don't have
 speech
during that minute or so. You're wondering if your computer has frozen
 or
what's going on. FS built that into JAWS 15 and 16. In 15, you can
 control
when JAWS restarts. In version 16, it restarts for you.

RE: Navigating tabs in a web page

2015-04-20 Thread Londa Peterson via Jfw
I think that if you press the spacebar on one of the tabs, you can then
navigate left and right across the tabs. You can then go up and down through
the choices under each tab. It's kind of like an old style menu bar. See if
that helps.

Hi,

I don't think we're talking about the same tabs here. I'm talking
about tabs within a web page, not separate web pages opened in
different tabs. Does this make sense? There are some web pages that
seem to be divided into different tabs... our university library's
site is just one. I think Blackboard Learn has different tabs as well.
I'm not sure, but I think the Freedom Scientific website is divided
into tabs. I'm wondering if there is an easy way to navigate these
tabs... hope I'm using the correct term.

Thanks,

Hi folks! I'm getting more and more frustrated with JAWS 16, and the
inability to do simple tasks with it. Today, I was working on a report in
Microsoft Word, and had to continuously correct spelling errors, because for
some reason JAWS likes to add characters, or in some cases, put the letters
in the wrong order when I type. This has just started with JAWS 16. I have
noticed it since day 1, and it has not been resolved yet. I hope someone
from FS monitors this list. This has to be fixed. The same thing happens
when sending emails. Thank goodness I proofread everything before I send it

Optasia is usable, but has its drawbacks. I recently acquired the New
American, only to find it was missing six books--every book with only one
chapter, along with the book of Acts. This would suggest an indexing
problem, in that each of these books, in its own way, differed from the
norm. Acts is the only book to begin with a, and the single-chapter books
would seem to explain themselves. I don't know if this is common to all
translations, both Catholic and Protestant, but it's worth noting. For
heaven's sake, is there anyone out there willing to sell a study bible
straight up, without a lot of fuss and bother. Thus far, Optasia is the
closest I've found.

I have Logos 4 Platinum with something like 2100 or 2200 books in my library

remainder of my vision. I still use magic a little but Logos doesn't work
with the latest version of either Magic or Jaws. I graduated from both

current versions of both Logos and jaws to once again take advantage of most
if not all of my resources. I realize I may never again be able to use my

can no longer sight translate the BHS, or any of my Greek or akkadian texts

No more, it seems.

Now, the only way a link is ready to be clicked is when I tab to it, or use
the JAWS+F7 dialog to navigate to the link. Using the arrow keys or

Anyone else seeing this behavior?

RE: Jaws won't start automatically in windows 8.1

2015-01-29 Thread Londa Peterson via Jfw
Hi Ann,

I had a client who had this very problem. His was Windows 7, but I'm not
sure that actually makes a difference. He called FS tech support, and they
were able to tandem into his computer and fix it for him. As I never quite
understood his explanation of the problem, so I'd just recommend that you
call tech support and let them fix this for you. He also had all the
start-up settings set correctly.

It's not a problem to run it manually, but it is more of a very very

RE: Kindle Books, not all have audio!

I don't think you pay full price for both copies. If I remember correctly,
you pay for the audio and then pay just a couple dollars for the text

I find the idea of buying two copies of a book just to get the audio
is simply absurd. There must be a market though or amazon wouldn't be
offering it. If there's one thing I've learned as both a reader and an
author it's that amazon serves itself first.

Having said that, I must say I adore the kindle app on my iPhone. It
makes me positively dizzy to be able to read almost any book I want at
the click of a button.

On 12/19/14, Steve Griffiths via Jfw jfw@lists.the-jdh.com wrote:
 Hi Tim,

There are two types of audio with Kindle books, synthetic speech and human
narrated, and I think the person you spoke to at Amazon was confusing the
 two.

For reading with synthetic speech, all Kindle eBooks have a text-to-speech
setting within the product details heading on the page about that book.
The
setting governs whether they will read with synthetic speech on a kindle
device like the kindle keyboard, and it has two options, enabled or not
enabled. All Kindle eBooks can be read with synthetic speech in software
apps, which means Kindle for PC with accessibility, or the Kindle apps for
iOS and Android, or the Kindle Fire. So long as you have the Kindle for PC
with accessibility version, you should be able to open the app and pick a
book with JAWS, and read the book with the built in speech synthesiser.
This
should work for any book you buy from the Kindle Store.

In the UK this autumn, but maybe earlier in the US, Amazon introduced the
Whispersync for Voice feature. This is where a Kindle eBook has an audio
companion. These are two separate purchases, but if you have both, you can
switch between reading the eBook with synthetic speech and the audio book
with human narration. Not all Kindle eBooks have an audio companion, in
fact
at the moment in the UK very few do. It sounds to me as if the person you
spoke to was thinking of the Whispersync audio version rather than the
ability to read with synthetic speech, which does not require a separate
 button to acquire.

There are a couple of free books you can use to check out Whispersync for
voice, one of which is Dracula. I found this particularly good for
demonstrating the potential, because it contains a number of words of East
European origin that I was unfamiliar with. I could use the audio version
to
hear how a word is pronounced, and then switch to the synthetic speech
version on my iPhone to check its spelling. Very neat. But I don't know if
I
would want to buy two versions of a book to get that feature!

By the way, the RNIB have some good information about eBooks, although
their
page on kindle apps doesn't include anything about Whispersync for voice:

Hi Tom,

If you're using JAWS 16, those instructions are not correct.

1. Open the document in Adobe reader
2. When you get the alert empty document, press Insert + space, then o,
then d. You will get the document in a virtual viewer. If it's something

Subject: Still having problems with scanned image PDF files

Hi, all.

A few weeks ago, I raised the issue of how best to use the OCR capability in
the most recent versions of Jaws to read scanned image PDF files.

In response to my quiry, a list member gave me the following instructions:

Tom, using your current version of JAWS, your best bet is to perform an OCR
of your screen, when you have an unreadable PDF in focus. To do this, you
will need to press JAWS Key plus the space bar to activate the layer menu.

JAWS should make an audible sound indicating that you've done this
successfully. Then press the letter O. JAWS should announce OCR. Then
press S for screen. You can also press W for window, if the screen option
does not give you what you want.

I received another scanned image file today, and tried both sets of
instructions, but had no luck in reading the text in the file. Jaws did
come up, but it spoke in the Jaws cursor voice, rather than the PC cursor
voice, and didn't appear to be reading anything meaningful from the document
in focus.

Am I missing something here?

I'd be happy to e-mail the file to anyone who might want to take a look at
it.

P.S. I'm using Jaws 14 on a windows 7 machine here. Perhaps this would be
a good reason to upgrade to Jaws 16.

According to the installation instructionss, you should only have to install

That's what happened to me, I ended up without any speech, and had to

I downloaded J16 from FS, saved and then ran it. It went through the usual

instalation process, including to restart the computer. After restart I
find no evidence of J16 anywhere on my computer. What happened?

This is a windows 7 64 bit machine presently running J14.

I would install it. It's worth it. I have only had one problem which is the
annoying keyboard issue. I'd install it but leave 15 available in case you
have problems. you can always go back if you want, so it really doesn't hurt

RE: Timed licenses? and rescuing my Jaws?

2014-11-13 Thread Londa Peterson via Jfw
In the podcast on this, they did say that you would be able to own JAWS after a
certain number of timed licenses. This would be JAWS Professional if my
understanding of the podcast is correct. I also heard on a Tech Talk
presentation that they are looking at doing something similar with JAWS home
edition. Let's see what happens.

After opening file explorer I arrow to the OS hard drive and click on it

takes me to the libraries. Knowing that my documents are in the library

1. Press the Windows key. Don't enter anything in the search field.

2. Right-arrow once. This takes you to a menu which, on my system, has ten

More erratic now. I changed that one setting in JAWS and when I replied to
an e-mail, all the text went in from right to left, very cool if you want to
spontaneously type backwards or work in other languages that are intended to
work that way. Not so great for communicating in English. When I changed the

I have a Yoga 2 11, which is a similar machine though not quite as powerful as
what you're looking at. I love the machine with one exception. The function
keys are used for other things, and it doesn't even seem as though you can use
the FN key with them to get normal function keys. This can be fixed quite
easily, though, if you have sighted assistance. I have an article that tells
you step-by-step how to do it. I can email it off list if you would like. Now
that I have that problem fixed, I absolutely love the machine. I take it almost

I cannot help with a Yoga Pro model. I can, however, tell you about my basic
Yoga.
I purchased it virtually as soon as Windows 8 came out. The Yoga was so hard
to find, I couldn't get it anywhere in San Diego. I had to go to Orange
County, which was too far to drive. Ultimately, I got it in Topeka, Kansas.
That was 2 or 3 years ago.
The Yoga is the best computer I've ever owned. The home, end, pageup,
pagedown, and other keys are the best I've ever seen. Also, unlike some
laptops, there is an applications key. I regularly get 7 to 10 hours of
battery life. Just go to mobility center, turn down the screen, and put in
power saver mode.
The only trick is with the insert key. I like to have two JAWS keys, the
capslock key and the insert key. Unfortunately, I cannot have both a second
JAWS key and an applications key. I can have an applications key and one JAWS
key, which is how I have my Yoga set up. The touch screen is great. Yes,
there are actually some functions where touching the screen is pretty handy.
If you are lecturing. It is fantastic for notes.
I've used nothing but Lenovo laptops and ultrabooks for 10 years. As far as
I'm concerned, they are the Gold Standard of laptops.
Of course, this (like pretty much everything else you hear about laptop or
computer choices) is subjective, and personal taste varies widely.
One thing I would encourage you to think about. If you get a Lenovo (or most
any laptop), I would encourage you to check out Best Buy and the Geek Squad.
They can help you get your firmware and other settings fixed, get your virus
protection set up, and give you a little tutorial on your laptop before you
leave the store.
Then, at any time thereafter, they are as close as a phone call away. They are
amazing.

How to turn back function F1-F12 keys old behavior without pressing Fn key in
Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro?

Posted on March 23, 2014 by kiewic

Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro seems to be the hottest laptop out there in the market right
now. Yes, even hotter than a mac book air :)

But the Yoga 2 Pro comes configured with some settings that are not the best
settings for professionals looking for a powerful computer. One example of
these weak settings is the default behavior of the function keys, by default
they work as hot keys (mute the volume, turn up/down the volume, close a
window, refresh, change display settings, turn on/off airplane mode, turn
on/off the display, increase/decrease the brightness, etc.).

To return to the old behavior of the function keys:
1. Turn off the computer.
2. Enter BIOS setup by pressing the little button next to the power button (see
picture above).
3. Go to Configuration, select Hotkey mode and press Enter.
4. Select Disabled and press Enter.
5. Press F10 to save and exit.

are good and some are not so good, but that’s usually the way with user
reviews. There is a newer model, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro which has a new 5th
generation processor, but apparently the battery life isn’t as good, and it’s
an extra 300 dollars or so.

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who is using any of the Yoga Pro
models.

I’d also appreciate hearing about any laptops people are using with Jaws that
work well.

Thanks,

Russell

RE: What is JAWS for Home Use?

2014-10-29 Thread Londa Peterson via Jfw
As I read this thread, I noticed that someone said that there was less
functionality in JAWS home use edition. My understanding is that this is not
correct. Both versions have the same functionality. One is for commercial
use and one is not. That's the only difference according to what I've heard
on several programs and podcasts I have listened to. You can even now buy
remote desktop for home use edition. I'd be curious as to where the person
heard that there was less functionality in home use edition because I
haven't heard that anywhere.

Do folks with the message have JAWS Home edition or JAWS Professional?
FS changed the licensing for JAWS. From what I understand of the new
arrangement, people with JAWS Home Edition can now use the program on
many different flavors of Windows. It used to be this license could
only be used on the lowest windows license tiers, typically called
home. Now, the home users will have certain functions of JAWS
disabled and licensing provisions are more restrictive. JAWS
Professional will continue to offer all features of JAWS, work on all
versions of Windows, and offer the least restrictive licensing
arrangement.

If you have an external hard drive, I think I'd go for a tablet with a
keyboard instead. It'll do everything you want, and they're actually more
powerful than netbooks. The only disadvantage may be storage. You can use an

RE: Adobe Connect or Webex

2014-08-07 Thread Londa Peterson via Jfw
Hi Brad,

Until last night I also thought Adobe Connect was not accessible. I had some
time to explore prior to my webinar, and I found a couple of things. If you
hit the space bar on any of the menus, you will enter a menu bar. You can
use left and right arrows to find the menus and up and down arrows for the
submenus. In the help menu I found a list of short-cut keys. I was able to
find the edit box for the chat. I was also able to find the content area and
even read the slides. I don't remember what the keys were now, but I know I
have more webinars coming up. The next time I take one, I'll try to paste
the short-cuts into a document. Then I'll paste them into an email message
and post them here. That is, if it's ok with the moderator. Hope this helps.

As a small part of my job, I occasionally have to attend webinars. The
hosting organization has heard my concerns regarding Adobe Connect, and
they're genuinely interested in helping me if they can switch to a more
accessible solution.

I didn't have any trouble using Adobe Connect to access the webinar. I
could hear it just fine. But I couldn't use the chat feature, which is
the way they offered for asking questions. I couldn't even find the
chat box in Adobe Connect.

They have asked me if Webex is any better to use for this purpose, and I
don't know the answer to that. Because the National Disability
Institute uses it, I would hope that it is, but I have no experience
with Webex. Can anyone tell me if you've had any luck using it with
JAWS? I have JAWS 15 and Windows 7 Pro 64-Bit. As a side question, I
used Adobe Connect the other day with Firefox; would I have had better
luck with Internet Explorer and Adobe Connect?

I've had this problem before. Since I use a Braille display, I can see that
the message is actually there, but JAWS isn't reading it. The problem is
that if you don't hit escape and reopen the message, JAWS won't

Although this info can be helpful, it is very annoying when trying to read

I have some instructions here that tell me to use insert V for Jaws quick

Is there a global setting via which I can turn the paragraph and heading

I am not sure how these announcements got turned on, so I have to believe a

Go to Word options. Take a look at display. There are various checkboxes.
You probably have spaces and paragraph marks checked. Uncheck those, and it
should make things better. The heading announcements probably are coming
from JAWS. Change this in the settings center if you want it to apply to all
documents. Let me know if you need more detail.

Just got back from a holiday, found there was a Jaws update and stupidly did
it. Using latest Jaws, Word 2013 as well.

Why on earth does the tab key not work now? I am on a work deadline, and spent
endless time only to discover that a normal tab is now done with shift-tab. Who
would have dreamed that one up? Very backward.

In Word, control-E to center text no longer works for me. Is this a Word change
or a Jaws screw-up? I also find I can no longer use the normal tab or shift-tab
in dialogue boxes. If I want to recheck a field, I have to cycle around again
with the very frustrrating shift-tab.

Sorry, I’m way behind on list messages as I’ve been away. Sorry if this has
been talked about already. Is there something I can do to fix this other than
going back to a previous Jaws version and registering my dissatisfaction with
FS?

Jaws will probably hang on a bit longer thanks to existing scripts and
