Re: KR> dual plugs

2017-01-31 Thread Rob Schmitt via KRnet
Bob,

Yes, that is the original Revmaster design. My Revmaster engine and heads
came that way. They work, but you must remove the valve cover before you can
access the plugs. When I replaced my heads, I replaced them with the Great
Plains version - much better.

I have a pair of heads for 2180 VW and it appears that they are machined for
dual plugs but I am bit confused because the secondary holes are drilled and
have tubes that come up into the valve cover area. I don't see how plugs can
be used there unless the tubes are supposed to be extended up through the
the valve cover. The holes are opposite the original plug holes.
Does anybody know if these are actually for plugs or how this is supposed to
work?
Thanks

KR> Foam

2016-12-16 Thread Rob Schmitt
If there is no fuel in the wings, you can just use regular 2 pcf Styrofoam
from your local Home Depot/Lowes, etc. It is what I used. If fuel is
present, use urethane. Urethane is harder to get, you probably need to go to
Wicks or Aircraft Spruce.

KR> Useful Load

2016-11-29 Thread Rob Schmitt
Chris,

Concur with Mark.

I don't think there is going to be any value in doing the calculation. As I
recall from my engineering courses on aerodynamics, the equations are just
predictors - you must test the airfoil to get the results. It is a circular
loop; calc - test - revise your original data to conform to results, do all
over again. That is why wing tunnel testing is still required.

There are plenty of KRs flying. The stall speeds are pretty close to the
published data. Keep it light and it will stall at 50-55 mph.

See the diagram next to the bottom of http://www.n56ml.com/kraf48.html for
the max lift coefficient, which is the Eppler code diagram, and was done
fairly recently, calculated from the coordinates of the RAF48. I don't
claim to be an aerodynamicist, but I would choose use the solid Re
(Reynolds number) line (1x106) curve to be conservative (based on 50 mph
stall at 15 degrees AOA, standard air density, and 42" average wing chord
(anal extraction). This gives a ~Re of 1.7M or so (and the solid plotted
line represents 1.0M).

I'd work the details and give all my assumptions, but as soon as I do, some
real aero engineer will pick it apart to make me look stupid, so I'll let
him make the assumptions and provide results, and take the glory. I did
this calc 20 years ago, and the units were the PITA, but using an online
converter, it makes it easy. If nobody's done it by this weekend, I'll do
it again. I haven't volunteered because I've
(almost) learned to quit volunteering to do stuff that other people can
do...I couldn't get everything done that I plan to do before I die, even if
I lived another 50 years! [I'm getting selfish with my time].

The table at the very bottom of the page is for the RAF40, which is
something like 1.33 at 16 degree AOA "un-flapped", which is what almost all
of the KRs are. And the KRs that have flaps are not full span, for sure.
It's provided as it probably came from real wind tunnel data, but was likely
generated in the 1930's or 40's, although the thinner chord would likely
have a little less lift anyway.

Density of air is "standard air density", which you are probably familiar
with, standard pressure and temperature. Either find a density that's in
the proper units, or put conversion factors in the equation.

I'm supposed to be working right now...

KR> 2016 gathering

2016-09-22 Thread Rob Schmitt
What does the KR Gathering mean to me?

I concur with Lee and Jeff especially about seeing old friends again each year.

I'll add this. The 1st KR Gathering I attended was like Christmas day as a kid.
I had trouble sleeping in anticipation - I was that excited to see the planes
and pick them apart trying to determine how they worked and how they were
built. I got a ride in a KR2 from Marty Roberts and I was hooked bad. It took 8
years and 1500 hours but I got her done. I had a wife, 3 kids and two jobs so
I think the time I took was actually pretty reasonable. The relationships with
the folks weren't there the 1st year, but as you keep returning you see the
same faces again and again with many of the same passions for flying and
airplanes. All this regardless of if they have one built or not. I've been
going to Gatherings now since 1998, and I still enjoy it greatly. I'm sure I'll
keep going for many years to come. I've gotten so much out of building and
flying my KR I decided to host a gathering and return something to the group.
So please come to Lee's Summit next September and let's continue this adventure.

KR> KR Gathering 2017

2016-08-22 Thread Rob Schmitt
KR Enthusiasts;

I am planning to make a pitch at the 2016 KR Gathering to host the 2017
event at Lee's Summit Airport in Missouri. I understand a vote will be
required and the location needs to be approved. I also wanted to ensure the
KR Net folks have an opportunity to review this as well regardless of if
they can attend this year's Gathering.

I have put together a Power Point Presentation which can be downloaded with
the following Link (includes photos);

http://www.robert7721.com/files/KRGathering2017.pdf

Summary is as follows;

KR> Smooth Prime problems

2016-08-11 Thread Rob Schmitt
I think I used it (Smooth Prime) early on in my construction, but decided it
really didn't make much difference whether you use Smooth Prime or some
other standard high build primer that was sandable. I never sprayed the
prime coats, only used a roller. I actually flew the plane that way for
about 6 months. My 1st finish paint job was sprayed on using a "Boat"
acrylic enamel. That didn't last. My second paint job was Stewart Systems
and it seems to be holding up much better (rolled on).

Pete,
I had good results using UV smooth prime. Easy on the lungs and the ability
to roll allows priming areas w/out the hassle of spraying. Multiple thin
coats for best results. It dries quickly. Squeegeeing is an important step

2016-07-30 Thread Rob Schmitt
Just returned home myself from OSH. Approx 9 hours flight time. 5 up and 4 back
to Kansas City. I did visit the Tailwind fly-in in Watertown WI on the way up.

Most interesting item from this week was the iLevel system coupled to an IPad.
One Tailwind pilot was using this with the IPad for all his flight instruments
- no back up. It has a pitot and static ports as part of the set up.

My KR flew great as usual. Tons of fun was had.

I used a Castle nut with cotter pin on the hinge points. You want then to
rotate, so you don't want these too tight, but you also don't want them to
loosen, so you have the cotter pin. True these can be hard to install. I
have cut outs from the bottom to install, access and inspect. No one sees

Speaking of oil, the CorvAircraft community has been using Rotella
15W-40 oil for years now, given that it has one of the highest zinc
contents. Also, we add something called ZDDP MAXX to our oil at oil change
time. Look for ZDDP MAXX on ebay. ZDDP is the active ingredient that
matters...MAXX is just brandname. ZDDP is the stuff that most oils had in
abundance until catalytic converters and other changes lowered it
considerably in most oils. Adding ZDDP back into your oil is helpful,
especially on a rebuilt engine, as it provides better lubrication between a
new camshaft and lifters, preventing spalling, for example. I use it on the
VW also.

KR> Turtle deck question:

2015-09-28 Thread Rob Schmitt
What ever you put behind the seat needs to be pretty light to keep within
the CG. I do use my space behind the seat for sleeping bags strapped in with
bungee cords to keep them from interfering with the control cables to the
elevator.

It's possible to use some space behind the seat for storage but it totally
depends on the final C.G. of the airplane. One bay behind the seat is
probably all that's going to be available. I would suggest you make that
the very last thing you work on after seeing where the C.G. comes out and
then see how much weight you will be able to carry in that location and go
from there. I suspect you'll find that you can only carry a limited amount
of weight in that area, especially if you have a straight KR2 not a 2S.

The plans call for using 8 inches - 16 inches of the wing cord. So forward
point would be 8 inches aft of the wings front edge. Aft would be 16 inches.
This is for the RAF 48 airfoil.

Now that's funny. One way in, one way out runway. No flybys. Land on 27,
depart on 9. DA that time of year is usually around 10,000' or higher.
Restricted area 200' south of the runway. No hangar space available. And
best of all, a real dearth of restaurants and facilities. Somehow I'm not
seeing this place as a KR Mecca. :o)

KR> GPASC dual-plug 10mm plugs?

2015-06-14 Thread Rob Schmitt
Mark,

We'll I thought I might an answer, but probably not. I researched this for
my Great Plains heads and found there was a different reach on the plugs top
vs bottom and had emailed Steve Bennett a couple years ago. But it looks
like I am using 14mm spark plugs not 10 mm. Figured I would forward the
message any way as you might find out that the reach on the plugs is
different as well. The Bosch reference might get you closer to an answer.

Steve,
I received the new cylinder heads and have installed them on my airplane.
Much thanks for expediting.
I do have a question on spark plugs for the top side.
I ended up with both the bottoms and the tops machined for the 14mm plugs.
That is not a problem. However it looks like the reach on the top side spark
plugs should closer to a 0.7" vs a 0.5" that I have currently. I went to a
automotive parts store - but without a make and model automobile to put it
on, they were not much help.
What automotive spark plug should I get to work with the longer reach and
which also matches your spark plug adapter?
I've got 0.5" reach spark plugs in the heads for now, and it seems to be
running fine at the moment.
Thanks,

I'm about to install a pair of Great Plains dual-plug heads on my 2180cc VW
engine. Anybody know what make and model of 10mm plugs folks are using for
the secondary plugs?

I'm tearing the engine down anyway, since I found a broken cylinder stud
yesterday, among other things. I noticed the broken stud while working on a
new "performance" website for N891JF
(http://www.n56ml.com/n891jf/performance/), and noticed the CHT for
cylinder #4 wasn't even registering. After the stud broke, the nut
backed off and the CHT ring was just floating around in space. See
http://www.n56ml.com/n891jf/performance/ for that shot.

I'm thinking Megajolt or Megasquirt to fire these plugs. Given that I have
injector bosses on the intakes, I may just have to go Megasquirt.
Either of these will manage spark based on load and MAP, so advancing the
ignition at high altitudes could yield some real efficiency increases.
Megajolt's not very expensive either...something like $170 for the
controller, and it uses inexpensive Ford EDIS components that came on
millions of 90's Ford cars and trucks.

Don't forget my spark plug question. Plug wire info would be good too.

Thanks,

Dean,

I've got some drawings of Lycoming mounts which seem to use combinations
anywhere from 1/2" .049, to 7/8" .058 wall tubing. Probably can use 1/2"
.049 for a VW on a KR and be safe. Bump it to 5/8" .049 if you want to add
in some safety factor.

KR> Touchdown speed

2015-02-14 Thread Rob Schmitt
I use 80 mph over the numbers, and then flare. I really am not exactly sure
the exact landing speed, but it is probably closer to 70, then 60. This is
how I was taught by Terry Chezik and it works well. If you run below that
speed, the airplane get more unstable and is harder to control. It works
well for me on my Trigear.

On the other end, takeoff that it is, I do rotate at 60 mph and bring the
airplane up into ground effect, level off until it reaches 80 mph, and then
climb out. Once again the airplane is more stable that way and you are not
pushing the danger envelope.

Over 620 hours now. No crashes, replaced landing gear, or other damage to me
or airplane. I don't think I'm going to change anything I'm doing now.

KR> Fiberglass Fuel Tank Sealer

2015-01-04 Thread Rob Schmitt
I had a couple leaks in my fiberglass tank found after putting it all together.
The leaks were on the bottom seams that I just didn't quite get right. I used
epoxy to seal the leaks, West System specifically. My tank in built into the
forward turtle deck and is removable. I was able to take it off the airplane,
pour the epoxy inside through the gas filler hole, and rotate the tank so that
the epoxy ran into the seams. I haven't had to go back and do it again in the
last 8 years, so it worked.

I've found the Bill Hirsch slosh sealer to be effective and long lasting. I
sloshed the glass tanks on my KR with it 18 1/2 years ago. After 18 years of
use and over 1000 hours of flight time, I have observed no issues with the
slosh sealer, nor have the small weeps I had in the glass ever come back. I've
got a gallon of this stuff in my hangar to use on the glass tanks in my

I was able to use Aeropoxy in weather similar to yours, however it did take

KR> Stick imbalance

2014-11-08 Thread Rob Schmitt
John,

Congrats on your 1st flight! I had the same issue with my ground adjustable
only trim tab as well. You'll just need to adjust it till it is set for level
flight for you and no pressure added. It took several flights to find the sweet
spot. Mine ended with the trim tab down about 15 degrees. I use a bungee cord
on the stick to adjust it in flight for instance when I have a passenger.

Thanks,

Rob Schmitt

KR> Grass Runway

2014-10-28 Thread Rob Schmitt
Trigear - VW 75hp takes less distance to land, more distance to take off due to
increased friction from the grass. 1500-2000 feet to take off. 1000-1500

KR> Flight Sim and real time

2014-10-19 Thread Rob Schmitt
Bob,

I'm not sure what simulator or model you are using, but I've set up a KR2S
model for X-Plane. There is a link on my web site to the files at

www.robert7721.com

I will not argue about how effective these are for learning how to fly a KR,
but sometimes it's fun to do regardless. You are welcome to take my model
and modify to your needs.

The biggest issue with my KR2S model is on the drag. In order to get the
plane's top speed close to my airplane with only 75 hp, it is so slick she
will not slow down for a landing very well. I do not have either a belly
board or flaps on my airplane, neither does the model. The model could
definitely use either a drag brake or flaps to make it more flyable in the
simulator. However this does somewhat replicate real life in a KR - you can
float one forever on a landing if you got too much speed.

Thanks,

Rob Schmitt

HI All;
I am going to e setting up my flight sim for the winter and am wondering
how the Kr2 model works for anyone who may be using it.
Also, since there is nobody in my area that currently has a KR2 I am
wondering if there is a recommendation for some other type of airplane for
me to try and get some time in that would ay least give me an indication of
what flying a kR2 is like.
I know there is nothing exactly like them but just want to get a feel for
that speed, type of handling etc.
Next year I will certainly try to make it to the gathering so I can
hopefully get a ride in one.
Thanks

KR> Chino Trip Video

2014-09-14 Thread Rob Schmitt
KR Net,

I managed to finally download photos from last weekend's trip to Chino CA. I
put together a short 6 minute video from these. These are posted to my web
site at www.robert7721.com . The file size is about 75 MB so I recommend you
right click and download the file 1st, then run it on your computer. I stole
a couple photos from Jeff Scott I really loved as well to add to the
collection - thanks Jeff! The video starts out with some photos from my
flight in the back seat of Jeff's Super Cub over Las Alamos. Then some
photos of our KRs traveling over the mountains. Both meteor crater and
Mormon Lake are in a few of the flying photos. Then several photos at Chino
as well.

Enjoy!

KR> 2014 KR Gathering

2014-09-08 Thread Rob Schmitt
Joe,

I downloaded my Garmin data as well and was wishing I had your speed. My
worst leg average due to headwinds was 75 mph during my start off leg (250
miles) from Kansas City to Newton KS on Thursday morning! My top leg speed
was 125 mph. My average for the whole trip was about 110-115 mph. Yes, those
winds sucked! It was kind of depressing cruising at 9500 feet most of the
trip with a misery looking 110 mph indicated and little better showing on
the ground speed. Best leg was my last one heading home. I think the horse
smelled the stable and finally got some of her gallop back while cruising at
only 5500 feet.

14 hours Hobbs time from Kansas City to Chino, 12 hours back. 26 hours
total. Approx 2400 statute miles.

Great time at the Gathering as usual! But I am thinking I'm probably going
commercial air to Oregon next year. It is at least another 300 miles of
flying for me each way. If I go commercial I'll have time to drink more root
beer than I did this year. I think I've proved it can be done with my
airplane, and could do it again if needed.

Thanks,

Rob

KR> KR Forum-gear placement

2014-07-05 Thread Rob Schmitt
Sid,

Assuming you are using 8-16 (some say 14 max) from the front edge of the
wing, my KR2S has a 11.5 cg at same condition, pilot and half fuel. You are
a little farther aft, but not out of bounds by any means. I know sounds
silly, but can you just add a temp weight forward of the main spar?
Obviously the further forward the less weight it would need to be, but if
you have a spreadsheet set up you could figure it out.

A retractable pogo stick on the tail does not seem to practical for my KR-2
at this time.
This morning with just myself onboard and half fuel, the cg is at 12.6
inches. I tried raising the nose on a fast taxi down the runway. With an
estimated steady ground speed of 25 knots, I can easily raise the nose wheel
off the pavement with back stick about two inches. I estimate the speed
because the ASI does not register until 40 knots. I think I have the cg
about correct for flight, but the cg is only 3.4 inches ahead of the main
wheels. Hence the tendency to dump on the tail.
If I used longer gear legs, that would move the main wheels further aft.
But then there would be spring or stiffness issues, along with level stance
on the ground. If I angled the gear legs further aft, then the bottom of
the leg would need rework to get the toe in correct; that would also need
extra length on the legs with spring and stance considerations. Mr. Pazmany
shows lots of math to design the gear geometry to properly comply with Part
23. I am trying to avoid re-designing my KR-2. I want a practical machine
I can fly now without another year or two down time.
So, not dropping bombs yet, anyone have any other suggestions?

KR> KR Forum

2014-07-05 Thread Rob Schmitt
Sid,

Afraid I do not have anything specific I can offer on how to fix your KR2,
but I would like to say I've got a KR2S on trigear and have "never" seen
this issue. I've got the standard Diehl trigear setup. True I have no
additional counter balance weights in the tail or heavy trim control stuff.
I also flew quite a bit in Terry Chezik's KR2 trigear as well getting
trained up - I do not recall an issue with his. I was trying to see if you
had a web page to see your photos, or do you have a weight and balance
spreadsheet? The weights on my wheels were right at 200 pounds on all three
gear legs when she is empty. I have my 1st flight weight and balance on my
web site at

http://www.robert7721.com/WeighIn.html

Hope you get her figured out.

Mark,
For the KR Forum you could address the cg concerns for different engines and
extending the engine mounts. Some of the additional things going in the
tail not in the plans could be trim tab motors, elevator counter balance
stuff, wider elevators, antennas and associated wiring, auto pilot servos
and hardware associated with removable turtle decks. For tri-gear I am very
much aware that the main wheels are not set far enough to the rear to
consistently keep the tail from dumping when trying to mount or dismount.
Don't know if these issues are addressed in the KR-2S supplement plans.
Today I would not build a two-place KR with a 34-inch wide cockpit: that is
absurd. Yep, been there, done that.

KR> Real numbers for KR's

2014-06-23 Thread Rob Schmitt
Tony,

Numbers are on pavement. My landings on grass are shorter, more friction from
the grass. It also takes more runway to take off from the grass as well, same
issue with friction.

Distance is from wheel touch down. I fly out of a 4000 ft airport normally so
I do not get challenged very often. I did go to a pancake breakfast about a
month ago with a 2000 foot runway. Not a big deal, just needed to make sure I
was not hot and high.

Thanks,

Rob

Rob,

Are those numbers on grass or pavement? Is your landing distance from when the
wheels touch the ground, from 50ft or some other height?

Cheers,

Tony

Landing is about 1500 realistically. I have landed on 2000 ft runways. I bet
if I had a belly board and better brakes I could get her down to 1000 ft. One
benefit of trigear is you can land her and stand on the brakes to slow you down
without ruining a propeller.

My stall is +-50 mph, but I certainly don't push my approach speed to less than
70.

Yes, on a spec sheet one time. But in fairness, we have to remember
Ken's KR only weighed 480 pounds. Most of ours come in 50% or more
heavier than that.

I shot some awesome video yesterday in the KR. Now if I can figure
how to get it on youtube.

KR> Real numbers for KR's

2014-06-23 Thread Rob Schmitt
Larry,

I did not hot wire. I used a 8 ft + long sanding board. The inner and outer
ribs were the guide for the sanding board. The board was actually aluminum c
channel with sand paper glued to it. I used a wood planner to get the styrofoam
close and finished it up with the board. I do not have flaps or a belly board.
I am having too much fun flying to go back and retrofit, but a belly board
would be my choice if I did.

Thanks,

Rob

KR> Flight Control Cables

Just looked it up to confirm. "Fabricating Controls Cables", on page 120 of
"The Sportplane Builder" by Ton Bingelis. It was the 1st of Tony's books I
bought - but I did end up with all four by the time I finished building the
KR. Concur with Mark on their value.

3/32" is plenty. If you don't have the EAA series of books by Tony
Bengelis, you need to buy all four and read them ASAP. I'm pretty sure it
covers the details of making these cables, although I'd have to see whether
it's Sportplane Builder or Sportplane Construction Techniques that goes into
the most detail on these. These are most vital of the four are the two
"Sportplane" books ( see
http://www.amazon.com/Sportplane-Builder-Aircraft-Construction-Bingelis/dp/0
94571 ).

KR> trim tab size

2014-05-14 Thread Rob Schmitt via KRnet
It starts with at a ring hook under the pilots left on the left side of the
front spar, spans to the center through another Clevis, goes up the front spar
and the other bungee end hook goes around the center control stick. By sliding
the bungee up and down the stick I can adjust the force needed.

KR> Sanding blocks

2014-04-27 Thread Rob Schmitt
I used aluminum angle, 2" x 2" I think or maybe 3" x 3" . I made up several,
one as long as 8' to sand the foam in my scratch built wings. I got the
sandpaper from the Sherwin Williams store. You can buy it in a length as long
as you need and the sandpaper is very heavy duty. I glued it to the aluminum
angle using the spray on adhesive you buy at Auto Repair stores that is used to
glue on upholstery.

Paul, I would suggest a section of 4" or 6" PVC pipe. It's stiff enough that
it won't bend and the edges of the sandpaper will be glued up away from the
surface so they can't dig in if it comes loose.

I did not use Stainless steel. I used a layer of fiberfrax against the

readily available.

Got the fiberfrax from Aircraft Spruce. Aluminum from local supplier. This
is recommend by Tony Bengalis in one of his books I recall.

FYI. Neither wicks or aircraft spruce carry .005 stainless sheet or any
other size below .015. I found a specialty supplier in Ashland Oregon and
they want $63 per sqft. A touch spendy for me. Fortunately I have a piece
coming from a generous KR builder. So for the other new builders out there,
good luck and share with the group where you find it.

KR> KR Gathering attendance

2013-09-27 Thread Rob Schmitt
Roger,

Appreciate the offer but I need to get it removed from the airplane 1st and
send it. Yesterday was when I figured out I ran of other options. Hope to start
on that this weekend, hoping I don't have to remove the engine, I think I got
enough space to get it out.

KR> Oshkosh

2013-07-28 Thread Rob Schmitt
N1852Z has made it to Oshkosh. I got a primo parking spot in front of Homebuilt
Headquarters. Nice to have EAA Chapter friends who work there during
Airventure!

Pretty impressive Mark! Probably a little tougher to do for the rest of us than
you let on.

KR> Corvair engines

2013-05-22 Thread Rob Schmitt
Mark,

Ok, I'll call you out on it - VWs rule! Corvairs suck!

Just enjoying my KR as much as anyone. I gave 5 more Young Eagles ride in mine
last weekend. Got a hat from EAA the other day for going over 50. But I'm sure
some other KR flyer can beat that.
