Re: [lace] Demonstrating lace
Much as I feel every day can be (and often is) knit in public day (yes, I had my knitting out at the cafe on Saturday for the 'official' day), my lace pillow with the simple little nine pin edging comes with me all sorts of places (mostly SCA events, but not entirely!). [lace] International Lace Day-purpose of question
I was thinking of proposing that a certain museum key their object of the day to the International Lace Day, ie. make one of our lacemaker paintings, or even a piece of lace to be object of the day. However, I am not convinced that June 21st is sufficiently well accepted that a third party would find it compelling since it seems to emanate from one museum, and that a rather obscure one. In fact, the museum I have in mind is soliciting suggestions for July, although I don't think that there is a particular date in July that I could associate with lacemaking. Can anyone else think of one? Clearly there is a lot of art that could relate to Bastille Day, for instance, so a more obscure day would be better. (An example given for object of the day is a bust of Julius Caesar for March 15-the ides of March.) But, failing to identify a day in July, I could make a general suggestion and perhaps they would take it into account. What day should I propose for a lace theme? Possibly St. Catherine's Day? If so, when is it, and what argument could be made, or documentation provided that would appeal to a museum? Jane is important to our lace community. A cry of dismay was buried in a message from her today (16th). Is there someone on this list who has the technical capability and vision required to work on this problem that seems to be proliferating? How about a small committee with representation that understands the limitations of smaller providers of service? Do we need an additional site for those people who are not receiving email transmitted via AOL and some other companies? Do we all need to access Arachne archives daily to see what mail we have not received that may be of value? (That would be a solution, Jane. Recent mail is listed in date/time order.) Maybe it is time to address the issue of the very old server Arachne uses? Not sure that is the problem. We might need to raise money, but it would be for a very good cause. Here are three matters of concern to me: 1. Users still are not editing the Subject when they write about something entirely different. We cannot expect a computer to automatically do this. Please send a new message when you drastically change the Subject. 2. Our old correspondence was erased from the archives at some time in the past. It was of value and contained much good advice from experts no longer with us. It must not happen again. 3. The archives are very disorganized. When you search a key word or phrase, you get a very long list of correspondence in random order. It is not sorted in date/time order. It would be much easier for researchers if this could be done, so that the most recent mails would appear first, and the oldest would be last. A researcher could then decide whether to work from present to past - or from past to present. There are over 1,000 people subscribed to Arachne. We cannot be expected to remember everyone's individual problems when communicating. We need a universal fix. It would seem that 'live' (which comes under the umbrella of Outlook.com) has the same view as yahoo when it comes to other service providers, a problem I never had with Demon! [lace] Beads
Hello All! Not a bead expert, but do have a bit of experience! Beads have gotten very expensive as manufacturers have dreamed up new colors finishes. As an example, AB finish is just that--thin layers of a coating that reflect a rainbow of colors over the the base color. My favorite bead store--Beads Gone Wild--has hundreds (thousands?) of varieties. Eight grams of seed beads can range from $3 to $30 depending on the finish. And it's not just the coating on the outside--Silver lined beads being an example. Thankfully, the staff at BGW advised me to avoid silver lined beads for a recent needlepoint project because the silver lining tarnishes with age, thereby changing the color palette of the completed work over time. Dichroic glass beads are even more expensive, however, to my knowledge, the color properties are baked into the glass itself rather than applied. Color availability is limited. After checking online, I see that Gutermann beads are Czech. The bea! ds I use are Japanese so maybe there's a different process? That said, I too would be disappointed if beads lost their color so easily I would be tempted to contact the manufacturer. While I'm sorry you've had this problem, I thank you for posting about it. At the very least, it would be wise to test wash beads before applying to any wearable lace project. As to the lace trimmed skirts, it's easy to remove the colorless beads by breaking them off. Use the back of a metal spoon to carefully crush each bead individually. This is a technique that is used by seamstresses when altering a beaded dress. Best wishes with your project. Thank you Robin! I was scratching my head as I too thought that Lace Day was in the fall. This is NOT to discourage anyone from having a Lace Day, but if we could be a bit more collaborative when planning events, we would have a greater impact.Especially if we are contemplating this from an international perspective! Perhaps LOKK, OIDFA, IOLI Lace Guild UK ( any other interested parties) could reach a consensus? Our Charter Chapter held a mini event last Saturday, June 13th but we called it a Lace-In. [lace] Demonstrating lace
Whether there is a special day for it or not, we should all, especially in the US, where they still almost universally think bobbin lace is tatting, do lace in public places as much as possible. Kathryn Roberts and I demonstrated lace at the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen Makefest. The Guild took over a block of Queen Street, and the demos were there. Including 3D printing, and T shirt screening, and glass blowing, and wood carving. Lacemaking had been mentioned in the newspaper article, and some people came looking for the lace. I will be teaching a class in October, and had a haveago pillow with me. Each person did a row of linen stitch, 7 pairs total, in #10 colored crochet cotton. For my purposes, getting people to try it on a pillow, (2 over 3, 2 over 1 and 4 over 3, 2 over 3) showed them that it wasnât nearly as difficult as they thought it was. I remembered that what kick started me was doing a haveago pillow at a craft show in Noonan, Georgia, USA. It certainly makes a difference in oneâs mindset as to whether this is possible. One woman remembered my demonstrating lace 3 years ago outside of Central Market here in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA, our local farmerâs market that goes back to 1730. The real point is, demonstrating lace wherever you are is important, and doesnât take much. Just bring along some lace where you donât need total quiet in order to concentrate, and make lace in a public place. It does make a difference. I don't know if email works differently in the UK, but in the U.S., email addresses do not have to be tied to the service provider. There are gmail, hotmail, and yahoo which offer free email addresses. One can access them online through the website or set up the email program, Outlook, for example, so It receives them on a computer or tablet. The best thing about this is you don't have to change your email address if you change providers, so people don't lose track of you. You could have an email address exclusively for lace communications. Jean Reardon, Mercer PA where I think I hear someone building an ark. [lace] International Lace Day
There are Lace Days all the time. Individual groups sponsor and promote them. The problem is with the word International. If you are celebrating in one country, it should be a National Lace Day. In some cases, to which lacemakers from other nations have been invited. Publicity can acknowledge the guests. I wrote a proposal yesterday for a solution - to have nations representing us come to an agreement at an OIDFA meeting. We are an educated population, and should be able to work this out if everyone bends a little. Do all (or most) nations have Father's Day on the 3rd Sunday in June? If so, let us think about how many people it took to come to an agreement! The lacemakers of the world are few in number and quite capable of organizing their lace pillows, even with many bobbins. Surely, we can agree to celebrate together on one day of the year? Please, let's not make this complicated. Choose based on best time of year both north and south of the Equator, so that no one is expected to celebrate in sweltering heat or ice storms, and travel to an event is likely to be easiest. Many special occasions share the same day of the year, so that should not be a concern. Re: [lace] International Lace Day-purpose of question
Dear Devon, There is a large file of information about St. Catherine's Day in Arachne archives. It is also explained in several books written by British lace history experts, and in Cattern Cakes and Lace, the cook book written by Julia Jones and Barbara Deer that is illustrated so beautifully with lace and lace-making equipment. You can find info about the book in the archives, by title. In 2012, it fell on Thanksgiving Day in America. St. Catherine's Day is always November 25th. It is easily remembered as being one month before Christmas. Each year, when my new appointment calendar is prepared with birthdays of friends and other important dates (_Lace@Arachne's_ (mailto:Lace@Arachne's) anniversary, for example), I put this date in it. It is not so great a chore, and the calendar is always on the kitchen counter or in my purse/traveling bookcase. ...Well, that is what I call it, because I buy purses with side pockets that will accommodate books, magazines, and note pads on which to jot thoughts that will evolve into memos to _Lace@Arachne_ (mailto:Lace@Arachne) . Re: [lace] Undelivered Arachne Mail / Archives
Hi All, I am not a computer expert, but I know that arachne is a majordomo mailing list working on a unix computer. All 'arachne' does is receive an email and bounce (reflect) it out to everyone on a specific list. Except that in addition, 'arachne' bundles emails into a package for a 'digest' version. I receive the digest version and although there is the occasional missing message, I've always assumed it is to do with the bundling process with a message being too large for one digest and somehow not getting in to the next. Those lost messages never belong to any one particular sender, but are quite random and rare. Certainly the sources of missing messages (Jeri, Devon, Jacquie all appear in the digests). In other words, the arachne majordomo and server are working fine and if anyone on the list is not in receipt of an email it is much more likely to be the receiving server / computer / email software. I can only suggest that those with problems pick over their email settings with a fine-tooth comb. May be Avital can offer further insight. Best wishes, Jane New Forest. PS. Nearly forgot! Lace content - I demonstrated lace for a day in Christchurch Priory last week for a 'Living Arts' exhibition. Pleased to have a steady trickle of interested people watching and asking questions. But I'm sorry to say it never occurred to me to wear any lace! What a good idea (thanks Jeri). Hi Everybody: Just yesterday I fished a message out of the Spam folder - not on my computer, but the Spam folder that my ISP maintains for my account, where they put all of the messages the ISP software decides are junk. These messages are not downloaded to me and I would never see them if I didn’t go onto the ISP’s webmail program to see what they've thrown into that folder. The message was a perfectly innocent reply to an ongoing thread (the one about the International Lace Day). I got all the other messages in the thread, and I get other messages that sender posts to Arachne. But on that day at that time something about that message triggered my ISP’s software to decide it was junk and withhold it from me. Nothing to do with anything going wrong - just a difference of opinion between me and the ISP’s software. By the way, I had to set up that Spam folder myself. The ISP originally had my account set up so they would just delete the messages the software thought were Spam, and not put them in a folder for me. It wasn’t until I complained to them because I wasn’t getting some very important messages, that I found out what they were doing on my behalf, and changed my account settings so the messages would be saved for me to check over. So, I second the notion that people pick over their email settings - and maybe call their ISP to find out if something similar is happening. Hope this helps. Re: [lace] Undelivered Arachne Mail / Archives
Hi! It's your friendly local (...ok, Philadelphia-based) lace-making systems administrator. I think I can tell you what's going wrong. Did the disappearing emails problem begin about a year ago? That's when first Yahoo, then AOL, made changes which rendered their users unable to reach everyone on mailing lists. Basically, users of mailing lists are such a tiny and shrinking part of the internet that in implementing new anti-spam measures, Yahoo and AOL did not even take mailing lists into consideration (ok, Yahoo may also have had the ulterior motive of wanting people to only use Yahoo groups). The resulting error only affects non-digest readers of mailing lists. It does not affect direct emails from AOL and Yahoo senders *or* digests containing AOL and Yahoo senders - it only affects messages delivered through a mailing list that originated from AOL, Yahoo, or anyone else who has implemented the same DMARC policy. In April 2014, Yahoo, followed by AOL, set a DMARC policy to tell the other machines on the internet only accept @yahoo.com/@aol.com emails *directly from* yahoo.com/aol.com servers! Accept no substitutes! Their intent was to prevent spoofed spam emails that purported to come from them, but were really originating elsewhere. Unfortunately, when you use a mailing list (any mailing list), email *from you* appears to come *via the mailing list's servers*, not via your own provider's servers. So from that point onward, all mail to mailing lists from yahoo.com users and aol.com users was in violation of the new DMARC policy (I could put a footnote here about mailing lists *run* by yahoo/AOL being an exception, but it's not really relevant). The reason why many of us can still see the emails from our yahoo.com and aol.com lacemakers is simply that we are using mail providers who are ignoring DMARC policies. If my email provider paid attention to the policies and did as AOL and Yahoo ask, I wouldn't be seeing Jeri and Devon's emails to the list either. So, it's not as simple as an error at the originating end, in the middle, or at the receiving end. For this error to occur, all three pieces have to participate! The originating end has to have a draconian DMARC policy - the receiving end has to adhere to it - and the middle, the mailing list, just has to act as mailing lists have always acted, passing the mail along through its own servers with the sender's address intact. With those three conditions met, the mail will be rejected (lost entirely, not just sent to spam). Since there are three pieces, there are three solutions. One, send emails from a mail provider without a draconian DMARC policy, and everyone will get your email (barring other issues). Two, read your email from a mail provider that ignores DMARC policies, and you will be able to read everyone's messages... at least until your provider joins the modern era. Or three, adjust the mailing list software so that it no longer passes messages unchanged (this is why the digest option works!), making the DMARC policy irrelevant. In this solution, emails would look to the other mail servers as if they originated from the list, rather than from the person who sent the email, and the DMARC policy would not be triggered. If the list admin wants to pursue option three, I'm happy to offer further assistance. [lace] Help - Embroidered Jacket.
Can anyone please help me? - Recently I saw a web site showing a reproduction embroidered jacket, which was made in England copied from one in a museum - possibly the VA. I cannot find the link anywhere, - and nor can I find my 'bookmark' for it! Grrr! I promised to share the link with a friend who does some amazing handwork, - and now I can't find where to direct her to!! I know I am not very good at doing searches, though. I have just checked out the Royal School of Needlework, but can't find it there either! The site showed the various stages in making the jacket, and some of the embroiderers they gave work to. It was an amazing project. Regards from Liz in Melbourne, Oz. lizl...@bigpond.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] missing messages
I don't even like to think of how many messages from Jeri or Devon or others I have missed because they went to my Spam folder and I neglected to check there. Gmail says in answer to the question why is this in Spam that if a name is in my contact list, then the message will always go through. Well, not so - Jeri and Devon are in my contact list, and while a personal message would arrive with no problem, one from Arachne never does. They do come through to my phone. I wrote Gmail about this but don't hold out much hope that I'll get a reply. Also this - maybe this involves a setting, but when I use reply in gmail I do not see the message I am replying to and so do not have the opportunity to shorten it - I don't even see a subject line that I could change if necessary. Leonard, a now sadly gone old lacemaker who learned the craft in Northern England many, many years ago, was taught to just draw out the pattern with lines, and then put up the pins where necessary as she worked! I saw her patterns and also her work, - and it was just as good as those of us who place pins in dots!!! Certainly move the pin holes if necessary to get the lace more even, and more to your own liking. I am a bit of a rebel in this - I use the pattern and dots as Guide lines, and if I feel a pin hole needs to be moved a fraction - then I move it!! [lace] Prickings
Dear All One further thought on prickings: I am working on/working out a fairly complex Beds pattern, and am at present on version 3.  I have pricked out, from the paper draft, the pinholes for the pattern features and trails, and foot and headside, but on Mrs Underwood's advice, just marked where the veins in the leaf and plaits would go, pricking the holes for the veins and picots on the plaits, as needed and where needed.  This allows some scope for moving plaits slightly to start or finish in a more convenient place, and again, how a leaf is attacked will affect where the vein's pinholes go; there she said to treat an old pricking's pinholes as suggestions, not orders.  This works best, I should think, on traditional card with permanent ink markings and no covering film.  Using permanent ink means a bottle of white typing correction fluid finds a place in my work box... I think this is similar to the Honiton approach, where of course thick card pre-pricked is traditional, to allow the use of a straight needlepin for sewings: the  fillings are often pricked in on the pillow when the surrounding work is completed, to allow the holes to be shifted slightly for ease of working. I think it depends on whether you make lace like a train, following the tracks, a trolley bus, with some scope for deviation, or a car, with the freedom of the road!  I sometimes imitate the (UK, not Dutch) bicycle - ignore the one way street signs, traffic lights, and use the pavements if it suits! leonard...@yahoo.com, who doesn't ride a bike, but has some unpleasant close encounters with them on the pavements of London - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] RE: battenberg tape
When I was working on the Castle class locomotive and tender 'picture' I made for my City Guilds, using Branscombe techniques (Branscombe Point is a Devon tape lace (as opposed to braid lace, which is the name we use for bobbin made laces of the ilk) similar to Battenberg but uses a greater range of filling stitches to attempt to resemble Honiton lace) I had to make most of the tape myself. This was because I wanted to work in colour, and so whereas I needed green, silver, black, gold and red, could only buy black, white or ecru Branscombe tape; and all attempts at dying the tape failed to give a satisfactory result. Using the same thread to make the tape as I was going to use for the needlelace fillings meant there was no difference in thickness of the two areas. I did buy a card of black tape (from Tom in Belgium, who some may remember). The rest was made in the lengths I needed it - not made in one length and cut up afterwards. I used Madeira Tanne 30 (now replaced by Cotona 30), with four passive pairs and three workers (so as to keep a straight edge on both sides). Another difference between Branscombe and Battenberg is that the tapes are slightly different - Battenberg has a heavier gathering thread on each side (similar to a coarse thread or gimp) which is used to pull the tape into shape; Branscombe tape is gathered by using a needle and finer thread to whip (overcast) along the inner curved edges so holding them in shape. The tape then loses all its wrinkles like magic when it is dampened and pressed. I've noticed a number of emails I haven't received lately - which is why I'm replying to Donna's question using Adele's post - the one from Jacquie Tinch about the International Lace Day didn't come through, and I'm resigned to the fact that Jeri's posts won't get to me again. It would seem that 'live' (which comes under the umbrella of Outlook.com) has the same view as yahoo when it comes to other service providers, a problem I never had with Demon! (The reason we changed was down to total lack of internet service). I would suggest that if anyone emails me privately and doesn't get a response, if they are in the Facebook Lacemakers' group, they message me via Facebook to check I've received their email. Re: [lace] Prickings
Sorry not to snip but need both posts to explain my answer. When I make a mistake on the lines on my pricking, I very, very gently scratch the line out and the rub the offending place down with the wooden end of my bulbous pricker. After I've made my first piece of lace with the pricking you wouldn't know the was a correction. Correction fluid can flake do I avoid it but not to say it's not right for others. Re: [lace] Museum Kantfabriek in Horst-Int. Lace Day
I never heard of a 'Lace Day' but a 'World Wide Knit in Public' in Madrid (Spain) which took place last Saturday. The Costume Museum participated ( http://museodeltraje.mcu.es/index.jsp?id=751; ) as it did in the past and there we were representing bobbin lace on Saturday evening. Unfortunately I did not take any pictures of the event because we were so busy showing people how to cross and turn threads that we missed it. In the end there were two or three young women interested in knowing more and now they will start to attend classes to go on learning how to make bobbin lace. For us it turned out to be a great success and the Museum wants us to continue with demonstrations and workshops in the near future. I am wondering how widespread the celebration of this International Lace Day is, and how well known it is among hand lacemakers. Are all the Dutch lacemakers participating in this? Re: [lace] Question about beads
It would certainly happen both while you were making the lace and later, when it was being used, if you used sharp bugle beads. With the metal ones, I am not so sure. It would probably be fine in the making, but wear through the thread later. I don't think it would matter what thread you used - linen and silk would resist a little longer than cotton, but would break in the end, I think Kathleen In sunny Berkshire, UK, where we could do with some rain for the garden! [lace] 21h of July International Lace Day
I don’t know where this idea was developed and by whom. The first time I read about it, it was mentioned on Facebook. My first thought was, that this idea came from an English speaking country and the Museum De Kantfabriek followed. It was on Facebook for the first time last week. Originally an International Lace event was planned in Horst on the 4th of July, but it was already cancelled in November last year. So now it is on the 21 of June, when also in Holland Father’s day is celebrated. On the website of the Kantfabriek the day is mentioned but also here you get the idea that they follow an idea from elsewhere. I don’t think any of the lace organizations was involved in this. Best regards and happy lacing on the 21st or on every other day you are making lace.
