2015-12-02 Thread Bertrans1
I would also like to remind those who joined in the Exchange that your
ornaments should be posted by now. If you have not done so, please do so this
week. If you will experience difficulty either finishing or completing your
masterpiece, please, please let Janet, Jenny and me know so we can help you.
We have heard from many that they have received their ornaments already.
Thank you to all who have made this exchange so successful.

Jeanette,
We are so pleased your card actually arrived from Lin. She was concerned about
it's arrival and know she is very happy today knowing it arrived safely.
Thank you for not opting out. Know this is a very nice ending to your postal
strike. We hope you will join in again.

Re: [lace] Seasons Greetings

2014-12-28 Thread Bertrans1
All,
Sorry for not being more clear when Janet and I sent out the pairings. The
intent was for each to send a copy of their ornament to Jenny before sending it
to their partner. For those of us, like me, who forgot to take a picture, we
asked the recipient to please take the picture and send to Jenny.
So, if you are the lucky recipient of one of the pieces of art, and don't see
your ornament on Jenny's site, please please take a picture for us all to
enjoy.
Jenny has done a fantastic job of collecting all our ornaments as she receives
them.
Sallie and Janet
PS - each time I see a new one I wish I had it too. They are all so unique and
beautiful.

[lace] Christmas Card Exchange

We are getting ready to send out the pairings and thought we should send out a
last minute reminder to those who forgot to send us your name, address & number
of ornaments you want to makeup. So if you forgot or misplaced the details,
please send your name and address. If you need the details again, please e-mail

Thanks to all who have already sent your info. We hope those who have joined

[lace] Christmas Card & Ornament Exchange 2014

2014-09-30 Thread Bertrans1
Hi all,

Janet and I thought we would remind those of you who have not already signed
up, that we are nearing the time we will select the pairings for the exchange.
So, if you have not already signed up for a partner, please consider doing so.
It is a lot of fun and we know you will enjoy the experience. Besides the fun
of making the ornament and mailing off to a distant location, is the fun of
receiving a card and ornament. Plus seeing them all when Jenny uploads them
all for us to drool over.

When we sent out the original announcement, we received a comment regarding the
card you will use when you send the ornament and skill level required. Please,
please do not hesitate or decide to not join us because you feel your lace will
not be good enough. Your lace comes from your heart and will be treasured by
whoever receives it because it was made with love.
Next, regarding the card. Whether you make one yourself or purchase one or just
put your ornament or piece of lace in an envelope alone, it does not matter.
What matters is that you took the time to make something.
Another issue addressed after our first announcement related to what can be
sent. Whatever you take the time to make and send is up to you. Your partner
will enjoy whatever you send.
We hope this extra info helps to sway those on the range fence to send us your
names, addresses and number of ornaments you would like to send out.

As a reminder please note the following dates:

1 OCT - 22 OCT 2014
- send us your name and address
- tell us how many cards you would like to make
- also, if you have any special requests as to where you would like to send
your cards, please let us know
- please send your requests to either of us at the following addresses or reply
to this e-mail and we will do our best to carry out your wishes.

Janet from Bridlington, Yorkshire, UK. janettheak...@hotmail.com

Sallie from Wyoming, USA bertra...@gmail.com

3 NOV 2014
Pairings will be sent out to all who desire to participate

1 DEC 2013 - all cards should be postmarked to your partner

We would also like to provide a couple ground rules
- If you want to share your work and the joy of the season, please send us your
name.
However, if you send us your name and you are paired, please follow through.
It is most disappointing if someone fails to follow through and their partner
has gone to the effort of making and sending their work and card

- If for some reason, after you have been paired you find you cannot follow
through, please let us know and we will reassign your name to someone else

- Again, if you feel uncomfortable sharing your work because you are just
beginning, please don't opt out. We will love your work all the more because
you tried.

Many Thanks,

Janet & Sallie

Re: [lace] contributing

2014-08-21 Thread Bertrans1
I was not going to say anything until your comments Lorelei. I liked your
comments.
When I met my dear friend for the first time (we had been communicating via
e-mail only as she lives in the UK) I showed her a bookmark I had made. I was
so proud of the fact I could finish something. She said it was wonderful,
however I could tell she was holding back. When I convinced her I wanted her
honest opinion. She responded with "you do spiders differently here in
America!" I asked her t show me how she does them and wonder of wonders I
could actually see the spider legs!!
Then I took my first ever class and had completely the opposite reaction from
the instructor I was paying to teach me. She looked at what I was doing &
picked up my scissors & cut all the bobbins off my pillow. Then she said I
needed to learn the the basic stitches and walked away. That ended my efforts
to learn that type lace and my desire to never take a courts with that teacher
again.
After that I was hesitant to take another class until I took a class with
Sylvie Nugyen. Talk about patience. She was fantastic and sold me on Russian
tape lace. This year at the Convention I took a course with Lia Baumeister. I
must admit I need way more lessons than we re programmed for this class. At
one point when I was really struggling I told her the problem is I can't read
Swedish. She laughed & said "but this is a diagram not words!" Then she
proceeded to color code the diagram so I could better follow what needed to be
done. I actually finished a small piece of lace!! More importantly she took
the time to work with me & didn't CUT my threads!! Lia's class on Russian tape
lace was fantastic. She started me on a fan and spent time with me to do
leaves which I am struggling with. So, bottom line I have had three fantastic
teachers and one very poor example of a teacher plus tons of help from Arachne.
Robin, please don't give up & if you follow the advise from those who have
responded you will have the courage to tell those who downgrade you to jump in
the lake. My friend in the UK is constantly telling me to not be so critical
of my work and is always encouraging as have been Sylvie & Lia. Please
remember you can always chalk up the bad experience to ignorance on the other
person's part. For every bad experience there are tons of really good ones as
others have said in their comments.

[lace] Christmas Card Exchange 2013

2014-01-12 Thread bertrans1
To all.
Guess I am the most derelict in announcing I have received all my ornaments
from the exchange this past Christmas. They are most treasured.
We had a wonderful turnout and had only one person fail to send the promised
ornaments. We however recovered from this unfortunate event and the recipient
received a beautiful ornament in substitution.
Thank you again to all who participated.
For those who did not participate or those who just what to dream please go to
Jenny Brandis' web page to see them all organized for this year as well as
precious years. She has done a beautiful job of organizing them. Hopefully,
this will entice you to join us again next year.

Re: [lace] Name the Good Teachers, Please!

2013-10-21 Thread bertrans1
Jeri and all,
I can name a good long distance teacher - Janet in Bridlington. I remember
when she first saw my spiders. Her comment was "that is lovely - they are
different from ours". After pressing her to explain, she said we do them
differently and then showed me how she was taught. Light bulb on - there were
actual defined legs on her spiders. Seems I had not been taught to do extra
twists on the legs. Now it is all long distance teaching and with loads of
directions and pictures, I am doing tape lace and getting ready to try a table
cloth she found in a magazine she almost tossed!
I also took a tape lace class with Sylvie Nugyen. She was so patient and made
the class fun.
On the sad side I took a class where the teacher said I was doing it all wrong,
cut my bobbins off the pillow and that ended that. I have yet to try again to
do the lace I paid a small fortune to learn!!
So there are good and bad. I have been fortunate to have two good teachers and
am slowly learning.

[lace] Christmas Card Exchange - 2013

Sorry for the confusion. Not certain what the computer was doing with the

this time:
Hi,
Janet and I have volunteered to head up the Christmas card exchange this year
with the all important help from Jenny in the uploading of the cards for all to
see in December.
The time line for preparing and sending the cards is:

22 SEP - 22 OCT 2013 - send us your name if you desire to participate
1 NOV 2013 - pairings will be sent out to all who desire to participate
1 DEC 2013 - all cards should be postmarked to your partner

Re: [lace] commemorative/digitizing

2013-03-21 Thread Bertrans1
All,
Is it possible to consider a transfer like Clay or Alex (can't remember which)
recommended. Plus a bobbin & tools motif for those who would prefer that. This
way, there would be something for both bobbin lacers as well as those who do
needle lace or tatting, etc.
Since the anniversary is 2 years away, it seems at this point that too much
time is being expended trying to decide. If someone could put together all the
suggestions, then offer the consolidated proposal to all. Arachnians could then
vote on the one they like best. The results of the voting could be reviewed
with the top 3 being offered to all for their choice as to what they would like
for their personal memento. For example for bobbin lacers a bobbin and tools
design could fe offered, a transfer motif for a cover cloth (bobbin lace) tool
bag, & shuttle for tatters. For needle lacers a transfer for a travel bag for
their projects & supplies. Then for all a decorated memory stick.
This way, all have a vote in what is selected and the discussion is a bit more
constructive.
Just a thought & if you all disagree I understand. However, it would seem there
has been enough discussion.
At this point, I would be nice to hear more about what everyone is making &
suggestions for problems others are experiencing in their projects.

Australia to Virginia, Florida & some in between. If Arachne weren't there, I
would never have met them. Just because we don't post as often as those few who
do, does NOT mean we are not learning from each of you.
The Golden Rule, regardless of faith is the standard that should be followed &
encouragement to those who are struggling in silence can be passed on in
encouraging posts about lace.
I have personally gained considerable insight into lace origins from the posts
and have especially enjoyed the history of bobbins from Brian. Alex and Jeri
have given me good advise and Janet is a God-send. Without criticizing my work
when I first met her, she said "you make spiders differently than we do!"
Rather than saying you did it wrong or that looks terrible (like one lacer told
me) she showed me how she learned. Loe and behold, when she did it you could
actually see the legs of the spider!! Now I can make spiders that really look
like spiders! So, bottom line, please be patient with us & lace will survive
for generations to come. That said, I am probably the "ruler" of impatience.

Re: [lace] lace clothing

2013-02-04 Thread Bertrans1
All,
My husband & I went to a dinner for Cheyenne Frontier Days last week. Miss
Frontier & her Lady-in-Waiting were there. They both were wearing white lace
tops (with black under tops), jeans & hand tooled cowboy boots. The lace tops
were machine made, but very nice. Normally, they wear cowboy shirts or
something similar, so this was a nice change.

Re: [lace] Third Embroidery/Lace Book by Gail Marsh, Gawthorpe Hall Collection

2011-12-12 Thread bertrans1
The embroidery book is also on Barnes & Noble web site for $16.29 new and
$14.91 sued/new from secondary book sellers. The highest price from the
secondary book market is $38.79 for the book direct from an authorized book
dealer in the UK. So, I fuss bottom line is you can get it for as little
as $14.91 to $38.79. However, fi you get it from Barnes and have a
membership with them it is $16.29 less 10% membership discount, and free
shipping. This brings the book to $14.84 plus applicable tax.
Just a thought for those looking to get the book.

Susan,
I don't knit, so don't understand the terms you used with the woman you so
kindly helped in the store, but I do understand her frustration. This is how
I have felt while trying to do lace, but I have two teachers who have the
patience of Job (like you demonstrated to the woman you met in the shop) and I
am learning. They both have drawn me detailed diagrams and I am slowly picking
up the techniques - it is becoming English & is no longer total "Greek" to me.
Right now I am learning how to go around a curve and the diagrams are a wonder
in my understanding of how it is done.

I was not going to comment on this, but after Linda's sad story below, I
decided to do so. I am still learning the basics and my two teachers (Janet &
Jo) have been nothing BUT patient & neither have ever given me the feelings
Clay and Linda got from their teachers. I would not be where I am now without
both Janet & Jo & the others along the way who have stopped to help me out.
This includes the Bridlington Lace Group. Wish you all could have these
wonderful experiences as they make my learning experience fun & educational in

[lace] Lace Class, Lace Day & Lace Fair

2011-10-26 Thread bertrans1
As you all know I am very new to lace & have had many lavers helping me. I
would like to publication thank you all. Plus would like to tell you about a
wonderful experience I just had in Yorkshire, England. We flew over for about
15 days with our dear friend Janet & her husband. While there Janet worked
with me & then took me to her local lace group. They were wonderful & so
helpful. My first experience was at a lace day in Pudsy where I met lavers
from the region. Then a few days later was lace class. Francis, their teacher
lent me her pillow, bobbins & thread. Then started me on my first ever snake.
I not only was able to finish it, by did a second one as well!! Two finished
projects in a row!
Then between seeing sights in (I think 7 counties) the area (4 miles short of
1500 miles) we found time to attend my first ever lace fair. I was fortunate
to meet Christine Springett who was kind enough to explain her new ornament
design to me & signed a copy of the new ornament pricking & directions. What a
kind person. I also met many many vendors (think here were 30 there) & most
were very willing to take a few minutes to answer my questions which were
probably pretty basic to them. Regardless, they were so helpful and patient.
So thanks to Janet, Frances, their class, Christine & all the others I met at
these events I had a super time & learned so much. To those of you who have
never experienced any of these, it is well worth it to go wherever you are.
Here in the States, I cannot ever forget Jo Ann & her patience of Job with my
bumblings.

Dear Friends,
I'm still making yards of fine point ground edging and as usual my
pricking is a photocopy covered with thin green plastic film. The
roller on the pillow is about 3" (7.5cm) in diameter.

I wonder if you can guess how many times the roller rotated before I
had to replace the pricking. Is it: 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10

I'll tell you the answer tomorrow night

[lace] Fwd: Fw: The Queensland floods = photos

2011-03-13 Thread bertrans1
I know this is not lace related, but thought you all might like to see some
of the pictures of what happened in Queensland. A friend of ours sent these
from the Netherlands. The picture referencing sightseers reminded us of the
tornado we went through on New Years’s Eve. The sightseers are almost worse
than the disaster because they hinder the clean up and don’t always
understand what the victims are going through - example the woman on the
steps.

Hope this isn’t too away from lace - if so, please do hit the delete
button. I just thought it was important to see what our fellow lace friends
have had to endure.

*Mate...some first hand pics. Perhaps the most riveting pic to me is the tug
boat going down the main street of the Brisbane Central Business District.
It is the third largest city in Ozz, with a population of 3.3 million. *

*Now the crocs are moving in, the one shown was in the Central Park in
Rockhampton City, they are gorging on dogs and carrion. Also the bloody
snakes are everywhere, washed out of the bush and taken residence in
abandoned houses in towns and the cities. *

*No one knows yet the real cost of all this, but it will be just massive,
and it is gonna hurt us.*

*For the most part, Australia is as flat as a shit carters hat, and is just
a massive flood plain, and it all runs from north to south.*

*Happy days mate...*

Clay and all,
For now think I am way newer than you and without benefit of knowing how to
knit or crochet, I really need the instructions and diagrams.
My dear "teacher" in England is sooo patient with me, but if I didn't have
her very detailed instructions, I would never have been able to complete my
first ever angel!! I am very new and have not even gotten to the point
where I can look at a pricking and determine what type lace it is. I have
many prickings from a lady who had done lace for many many years and she had
no diagrams or instructions for them. Until I learn more than I know now,
these are a mystery to me.

Thank you, Brian, for posting that Ebay number for the Abbott bobbins,. As
soon as I saw them I realized I had a similar one, - had a look for it, -
and Yes! I have one!! So now I can add the makers name to it!! It is fairly
slim, and I see I have spangled it, so it came down from Grandma without its
original spangle. - Nevertheless, it works well!! - as do most of my old
bobbins. I have one bone bobbin put away in the safe, as it has a damaged
head which snags threads, but I use all the others.

On another question, - I have the Digest form of Lace, and I have started

Re: [lace] black dye

2011-02-08 Thread bertrans1
Many years ago, my sister in law made her wedding dress. under skirt was
taffeta and the over skirt was lace from the bodice to the floor. When she
finished the gown, she took it to the cleaners to have it pressed. When
they returned it to her, we discovered they had pressed the lace against the
taffeta and the lace design was pressed into the taffeta and had changed the
color of the taffeta. So think it might not necessarily be the iron that
caused the problem, but the fact that the iron was too hot and was pressed
directly against the lace. Just a thought as it was truly a devastating
experience for my sister-in-law, who two days before the wedding ended up
buying a dress off the rack because her beautiful one-of-a-kind was
destroyed. Believe the best way to press the lace is to put a white towel
over it and then press it with an iron that is not too hot; e.g., synthetic
or silk setting.

They look crocheted at first glance but if you zoom in the structure
resembles a needlelace, or drawn thread work on the first one. Sun
lace or macramé lace perhaps? The lace looks like it is part of the
tablecloth fabric, rather than being attached? The large-scale pointy
trim resembles network.
Just a guess, the detail isn't clear on my screen.

[lace] Lace at St Louis Botanical Gardens

2011-01-01 Thread bertrans1
My husband and I went to the St. Louis Botanical Garden on 30 DEC to see the
train exhibit and then wandered through the gardens. We found our way to
the founder's home and what we think must have been the breakfast room
overlooking the gardens was a beautifully set table with a lace table cloth
on it. The second picture is of a table in a sitting room - also with a
beautiful lace cloth on the table. Think the punch bowl and table
decoration take away from the beauty of the cloth, but you can still see the
detail. Thought I would share the picture and maybe someone can tell me what
type lace it is.
Now we are cleaning up the damage we incurred when the tornado hit our house
and property. We have a great deal of damage, but there are people on the
road above us who were much less fortunate and many who have no house
remaining.
