[lace] Lace in Sri-Lanka
I don't know much about lace in Sri-Lanka, but several years ago my son was there for several weeks. During one of his strolls into the woods he came upon a small hut and a woman making bobbin lace. She allowed him to take her picture and he asked her if she could sell him a pair of bobbins (for me). Communication was a bit difficult because she couldn't speak English but some how they managed. He was quite surprise to see lace made in such a remote place. He showed her a picture of my lace but said he was a bit embarrassed because hers was of very low quality. At the time I posted a picture on Facebook. If any of you are on Facebook I can post it again. [lace] Thread
Hi everybody, I have been quiet for a very long time but I am still here on Arachne. While in Germany last Fall I bought three Madeira reels. I was sure that I bought Madeira Cotona 30 but when I got home I realized that I picked up Aerofil Madeira 100% polyester. It is a very fine thread for sewing and quilting. Could anyone tell me how many wrps to the cm? I tried to count and wrap it around a ruler but wasn't so successful I think I counted between 40 to 50 wraps. [lace] Arachne Anniversary
Hi, I think I joined Arachne in 1998, not sure any more. I have met a lot of lace makers this way, visited them in their homes while travelling and made many new friends. Arachne was a life saver for me as there was hardly anybody in Israel who made lace at the time. I could ask for help and always got several answers. I am not posting as much as I used to but I am reading every digest, Keep up the good work and thank you to Avital who is moderating this list. [lace] Beeralu lace industry
Hi all, My son was in Sri Lanka three years ago, stuck waiting for his reentry visa to India. While exploring the countryside he ventured info rather secluded pla e in a forest, where to his great surprise he saw a lacemaker in front of her hut making lace. He was quite surprised. Tried to communicate with the lady but didn't get very far. He right away reported to me about his discovery. I asked him to get me a pair of bobbins for me. He managed somehow to relate the message to the lady. He had some pictures of my lace which he showed her. The next day he got the bobbins . Of course she was also ready to pose for a picture. [lace] Books
Hi Arachnese, I have two books which I would like to sell. Miniatue Bobbin Lace by Roz Snowden and Lace in Miniature by Ann Collier. When I purchased them many years ago I was thinking of making a doll's house for my grand daughters. But, I soon realized that the designs of the doll house in the book is so different from our style of life that they wouldn't really appreciate it. In the meantime one is already 21 and the other 18 and they never got their doll house (except for a Barbi Kitchen) and I never made any lace out of the books. So time has come to say good bye and let them go. If anyone is interested would you please contact me privately. The books are in excellent condition, definitely like new . [lace] Open House
Hi everybody, A year has passed since the last open house even in Arad. All the artists and crafts people opened their houses again for three days. I am the only lace maker but the attendance was rather poor. I got the feeling that people just thought that since they have seen it last year there won't be anything new. Their mistake and their loss. But those who did make the effort to come were wonderful people who showed a lot of interest and decided that what I am making is super human, especially since I use fine threads and they couldn't imagine how I see anything. As usual the famous question popped up as if making lace spoils the eye sight and how am I able to see what I am doing. I guess that part of the low attendance was due to the wonderful weather we had and many were on vacation because of the Holy Days and just were out of town enjoying trips in the fresh air. I enjoyed it and I guess that next year I will take a break. [lace] OIDFA Lace translator
Hi, As a native Israeli, who grew up on the Hebrew language and is using it daily, I right away checked on the OIDFA translations from English into Hebrew. I have studied graduated in translating so I guess I still can say something in this respect. Many of the words I found are old fashioned and no longer in use. Hebrew is a living language which adapts to changes and uses in modern times. I would never use some of the terms given. I do teach lace from time to time and I have learnt lace making from a teacher using Hebrew. I must say that she did translate some of the terms from the Czech language but they worked well and made lots of sense. Many embroiderers and weavers use some terms which are identical to lace making terms and I have never heard any of them use some of the words I have found on the OIDFA translator. We do have an academic language committee which comes up with new terms to be used in Hebrew rather than using foreign words but many of them just don't seem to survive the academy. There are new words for computer terms and some just don't find their way into the daily language. I doubt there are many of you who would refer to these translations but if they are done they should be done properly. I have written a comment to OIDFA. [lace] Lace and crafts
Hi, I have just returned from a very interesting evening. Our cultural center which has been rather dormant for a long time due to all kind of problems has a new cultural director and one of his first ideas was to group all the artists in town together. You won't believe it , for a small town of hardly 24.000 inhabitants, , we did quite well in finding over 50 artists and crafts people and I''m pretty sure we still didn't find all. I volunteered to help in this venture and rounded up as many artists and crafts people as possible. In spite of the security problems right now a lot of people arrived and 8 artists were chosen to give a short presentation about their art. I was among them. I had 8 minutes to tell as much as possible about lace making and show my work. I picked up several themes of my work. pictures, 3 D objects like flowers and mobiles plus my little witch on her broom, and some of my bookmarks. I chose those in order to show the diversity of what can be done with bobbin lace. People were really interested, but it is just that temperatures dropped from 35C to 21C and most forgot to bring along something warm. It was a lovely evening with presentations on porcelain painting, mosaics, quilting and fiver arts, lots of wonderful talents. [lace] Threads
During my visit to Berlin last month I bought a very nice pattern at the small lace shop there. The pattern recommended Aurifil 12/2, so I got it also and started making the pattern right after I returned home. This was especially so that the pattern doesn't get filed as a to do project which will be forgotten later on because something new caught my interest. I must say after completing a quarter of the pattern that I'm not very happy with the thread. The colors are beautiful but it unravels and when making sewings it is very difficult to catch the complete thread. I understand from quilting lists that the size 50 is a very good thread. I don't get it here so I don't know. I can't say the same about the 12/2. [lace] Threads
Thanks to all of you who answered my mail. The fact that I had trouble with my sewings doesn't mean that I didn't find ways to solve the problem. Putting in a magic thread was really not practical and would have put me off completely from finishing this piece of lace. I often use a magic thread when starting a braid or when I know ahead of time that this will be my last pin. The Aurifil isn't that fine that I need a lazy Susan . I have used them all in the past and in this case the correct crochet hook does the job quite nicely if he thread doesn't split up precisely that moment. I hope to finish this reel of thread and go back to threads a like a lot better. [lace] Need help with Brigitte Bellon pattern
Hi Vila, I made two scarves out of this book. The book is only in German , it is at first difficult to get what she is saying but once you get going it works fin. I have checked the pattern now, Attach the two parts of the pattern and use it as one repeat. Once you turn your pillow remember that you have to sew pairs in as you go along. If you could explain exactly how you got stuck I'll try to figure it out for you. If you need a translation of the introduction I'd be happy to help you out with it too. Miriam in Israel I'm making a second attempt at the third pattern in Brigittle Bellon's Kloppelmuster Fur Schals Und Tischlaufer. The first time around I got the pattern started and figured it out until I turned to go back and attach the lace as I went on that part of pattern. There I got stuck. Since I had some other deadlines coming up I cut it off the pillow and set every thing aside for a while. Now I want to go back and master what stopped me before. First question, Is there a translation of the book anywhere? I've used Google translate for bits and pieces, but that can be more amusing that accurate most of the time. Second question, Is there a working diagram for the patterns? That would help a lot. Or does someone have some suggestions or hints. For me it's hard to figure out where the pairs go in the beginning by just looking at a color picture of the completed lace. For now it's back to more trial and error at getting started again. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Dear Spiders, I have started a scarf from Brigitte Bellon's little book of Scarves and table runners. I am making the scarf number 5. I have reached the point where I have to make the rose ground . The top rose ground is really the top of a triangle . The problem is that it is just in the middle where I have to turn the pattern and work it to the other direction. There is no way I can make the second rose without finishing the first one. I have turned the pattern around and around but I don't find the solution. [lace] Nearly Finished
Hi My problem is just the opposite. I have just finished a Kortelahti Oval from the book of roses, and a Torchon bookmark. I cleaned my pillows from UFOs which were sitting there collecting dust for several years. I didn't finish the UFOs I just took them off the pillow going by the motto that if I don't wear something for three years out it goes because it is a sign that either I don't like it any more or it doesn't fit me. So now I have four empty pillows and I have no idea what I'm going to do next. This is quite frustrating. I need something to trigger my imagination and it has to be a challenge. I hope, David, that you find something nice to do pretty quickly which you will like as much as you liked the current pattern. Hope the socks keep you warm. [lace] How do you sit
Hi I had my share of bad experience about sitting correctly , lately. I was concentrating hard on a Bucks Point pattern, didn't realize how the time is running away. , so didn't get up to make me something to dring. I was sitting at the endge of the chair, pulled my pillow close tpo me but bend over it more than usual because I didn't see th e pin holes. I used my magnifier but this didn't make the bending any easier. Finally my neck gave in. I have a stiff neck now for ovber 2 weeks. It is getting better but I'm still giving my pillow some vacation. That is when I also realized that the problem wasn't only sitting correctly but that I need new glasses. Hope to get back soon to my pillow. Hi Shirley, I also use my office chair which I can adjust for height, but I don't always get the correct setting. I have the pillow stand I bought from you ages ago and I have to adjust the chair to the height of the stand. This time I just over did. [lace] : Hand - Holding / Who we are - How we learn
Hi, I guess I have missed the beginning of this thread. I grew up with three languages. German was spoken at home, Hebrew outside and English in school. When it came to lacemaking I had a teacher who came from Prague. There were no lace words in Hebrew so she translated some from her language into Hebrew . Nothing similar to any lace terminology we know inEnglish German or French ( I know some French too). It worked as long as I didn't use any books. Then for a while I had some trouble, but in the end I was using the English words for lace making and when I sometimes talk with a friend who makes a bit of lace we use the English terminology. I don't know Russian so I don't know what is happening there. The only word I know is bobbin lace in Russian and then I get a big AHAHA and that is about it. Since there was so much talk about dragons, I have uploaded mine to the webshots. That is Avital helped me. Thanks Avital. [lace] Kortelahti Pattern
Dear Spiders, I need your help. I want to make the center piece on page86 (leinikkipelto) in the book Let's make bobbin lace by Eva-Lisa Kortelahti. The pattern has two parts which, as far as I understand are worked separately but yet one part is joined to the other part in some stage of the work., My question is which part comes first and how are the joins worked. I have played with the idea of making this piece for a long time but always pushed it aside because I had no idea how to tackle the pattern, Thanks, Miriam In Arad, Israel - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Hi, I had a look at Theo Brejaart's web page and had a look at the Finish pillow. There is a lacemaker in Washington State who makes something similar. I have seen her pillows while at the lace convention in Victoria. Her name is Marj. More than that I don't know. She shared a cluster with me. [lace] Is lace declining?
Hi, It is strange how trends and hobbies change. When I first came to the States in 1964, I was a students wife and wasn't allowed to work. So I wanted to do some crafts. I must say I was very disappointed in what I found in LA and the area. There was a bit of yarn in the department stores, and needlepoint, where the main pattern was already made and you had to make the background. There were also a few embroidery kits. So I bought McCall's Needlework and Crafts magazine (I still have two or three copies) and that was it. I later found one yarn store which I frequented often. So what I did most in those days was knit and sew. 25 years later I returned to the US for a visit. I was so surprised to see all the craft stores, like Michael's and JoAnnes etc. All I could say was Where were they when I needed them. I guess that in the sixties there was less leisure time then in the nineties. But I can see the change in Israel too. We had wonderful craft stores, yarn stores, embroidery equipment. All those stores have closed. The main interest now is wood painting and you can get that, wood and paints. I have worked in a hobby store for 15 months, and everything depended on the trend (or fashion) first it was macrame, then the trend went over to fimo, bit of beading, knitting and embroidery was always fashionable. Now you can hardly find a person who'll knit or crochet. So the same happens with lacemaking, it comes and goes. In several years we might find a revival again. I guess that some of it also depends on the economical situation. If people are made redundant they have to cut on their hobbies and use their income in other ways. Just thoughts on the subject. [lace] e-mail address
This has been on the list just a short while ago. I'm looking for the e-mail of Barbara Fey in Germany. I thought I had it in her catalogue , But it doesn't appear there nor at her add in the German lace magazine. So I would appreciate it if one of you can send it to me. While I'm at it I also noticed that I haven't thanked to all of you who have sent me advice of how to block my crochet curtain. I'm regret to say that I haven't gotten around to it yet. I was painting some bobbins, doing some upholstery and trying to figure out a Torchon design I made, and still can't figure out why it doesn't work. End result being that I cut the piece off and decided to do something else (perhaps I should do my curtain) while I wait to see the green light and figure out what went wrong. [lace] Crochet curtain
Dear Spider, I'm in need of ideas. I have a crochet curtain, which I have made in my living room. It is about 70 cm wide and 150 cms long. After the fire, the people who cleaned the house just took the curtain off the rod and sent it to the cleaners. (I was in the States at the time, remember?) Well it came back all distorted. It shrunk in odd ways. The long sides of the curtain got wavy and it looks horrible. I tried to add several rows to the length and to pull it in the correct direction but to no avail. The odd shape stays there. Any idea how I can save my curtain? It took me years to make it and I definitely won't make another one. It has a lovely design of a weeping willow and at night against the dark background it is beautiful. Only my heart aches when I look at it. [lace] summer/winter projects
Hi Bev and all other busy spiders, I'm back at the pillow and have started making the logarithmic lace I was asking about. For this project, I had to clear a lot of bobbins, so in order not to waste too much thread , at least, I managed to finish some old projects. It was a good idea to get rid of all the old thread on my bobbins because after finishing this part of my project my hands were black. All I do right now is constantly wind bobbins. I do hope that I won't run oput of thread in the middle, that will really be a shame since I chose some Madeira cotona which I have for a long time already. The reel is new , so at least I know I have about 200 meters. Oh, Bev, I'm so glad you gave me a bobbin at the NWP convention. It might be just the one I need to have enough bobbins on my pillow (bg). I must add, that I did finish some chrysanthemum lace. It is half a mat which I found in the Kant magazine. I made it just in order to get back into lace making again. But the half looks just as good as the whole project. Well, I have plenty of plans, but now it is back to the logarithmic lace. I do want to concentrate on it and finish it. At least I won't be able to start anything else since all my bobbins are being used in this piece. Well, coming to think of it, I could do some wire lace. I got three kits from Lenka or I could do some Milanese with my square bobbins or how about some Honiton.? So all of you have a nice summer /winter and make a lot of lace, Miriam in Arad, 23 kms from the Dead Sea and about 1000 meters over it. - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace] Logarithmic Lace
Hi, I have been interested in making some logarithmic lace , for a long time, but there were always other projects to be finished. Right now I'm in a kind of in between stage. My imagination isn't at its best for designing right now, so I decided to give it a go. I would like to make the pattern by Margaret Flux published in the Logarithmic lace book, from the Lace Guild in the UK. It says in the book that the pattern was reduced in size from the original. Does anyone of you know by how much I have to increase it, or can give me a rough estimate. [lace] Victoria Lace Convention
Hi spiders, I have arrived back home after a wonderful vacation in the USA and Canada. I started off in Chicago visiting my son and family and continued to Ottawa just after Memorial Day. There I stayed with a childhood friend of mine. She and Malvary arranged a lovely small lace gathering for me at Malvary's place . We were just five yet we managed to talk a lot and compare ideas about lace and lace books. I was just watching the lacemakers as I didn't have my lace pillow with me. The afternoon finished with several of us going out to dinner. Thank you again Malvary it was great. From Ottawa I flew to Vancouver where I stayed with Maureen. I know that Maureen has written to Arachne about this visit and the lace convention, so I won't dwell on all the particulars. I haven't read her e-mal to the list because I was unsubscribed for all the period. I had a wonderful time at Maureen's who took a lot of time to show me the sites of Richmond, Vancouver and surrounding. Amongst our short stops was a visit to Lenka. It was great seeing Lenka again, it was a very short visit since she was getting very busy for her fashion lace show which was held the next day. Lenka invited us to the show, which was just beautiful. It was a bit too hot on that afternoon, even for me, but nevertheless every moment was enjoyed. The wire lace was beautiful, it is so special and made with so much imagination. Just great. . While in Vancouver I had to go bead-shopping, since I had no idea what I had to bring with me for my workshop at the convention. Bead shopping is great but usually you buy a lot more than you need and are tempted by a lot of glittering little things. We went over to Vancouver Island , got there early had lunch in Sidney and then Maureen drove me around on the side roads to Victoria. I have been to Victoria about ten years ago but saw more of the touristic sites. We had a lovely cluster at the university where we were joined by Mimi and Marjory. I knew Mimi only by name since we have been making together a tatted round robin when I first joined arachne some time in the mid '90ies. Mimi even brought the doily with her to show me the end result. Thank you Mimi. I took the beaded amulet course and enjoyed every minute of it. We started with making cords in different ways and then went on to the making of the amulets. We did so much in just two and a half days. The whole convention was so well organized and the organizers put so much work into every detail. Our badges were hand made bobbin lace our little tote bags were sewn by members of the group. There were daily little lotteries and goodies many of them hand made. I was presented with a bobbin since I arrived from the furthest part of the world. It was a cute thought. Bev, Margaret, Esther and all the others (sorry if I didn't memorize all your names) put in so much work . Thank you all for the most enjoyable time I had at the convention. After the convention , I stayed a few more days with Janet Goodacre. We have been corresponding for about ten years and have never met before. Janet makes most beautiful Bedfordshire lace and she wears everything. She showed me Sooke and the area. But then, after two days it was time to go again. Maureen picked me up and we headed back to Vancouver. Next day I left for Los Angeles to visit some very good Israeli friends of mine. With this the lacey part of my trip ended. I went with my friends to Las Vegas for two days, they gambled a bit while I enjoyed watching the people and taking in the different sites of the beautiful hotels. It was time to pack again my bags and fly back to Chicago to stay with my son for another week and watch and enjoy my 10 month old grandson. All good things come to am end one day and for me it happened a few days before my return to Israel when I got a call from my son that there was a fire in my house. It is still very unclear to me how the airconditioner short circuited, but it did. Luckily it set the burglar alarm off and my neighbors who have a key rushed over to see what was happening and right away started to put out the fire. Apparently it was out before the fire brigade turned up. Luckily the damage was rather small, some of my lace doilies are gone, though my big lace pictures survived beautifully. My youngest son supervised the the cleaning (a team was sent in by the insurance company). I was talking to him just as they were putting all my table clothes into a machine at the laundromat. I just managed to have him pick out my filet lace table cloth, which my grandmother made, before it went into the machine. That is a very special table cloth which has pictures of different animals in it. At the time when Elaine Merritt was writing her article about animals in lace I have sent her pictures of it. I have some Orvis and hope to clean it with it, though I don't thing is has a lot of soot on it. The big problem is the soot everywheres. Most of it was cleaned but here and
