Some of the patterns are lovely, and I noticed that some prickings are marked
ROK. I think that is a Spanish lace organisation or is it a pattern producer?
Are these patterns available in the UK? Maybe they belong to a Spanish lace
organisation.

Thank you Clay and Joepie for the advice on wire lace. I'll have to be
brave and just start trying I think.

As for attendance at lace days and online shopping, two books purchased

the invoice. I'd love to attend but flying to England is a bit much

effort to meet other pacemakers and get to know the community.

Hi Arachnids,

Firstly my thanks to Lorelei for the inspiring lace webpages. They are
lovely.

Secondly, There seem to be fewer Lace days and fairs in the UK as Sue said.
The reason for that is probably not just the fact that people are using the
net, but also that the people who used to organise them (and note here that
it often has been the same few people taking up the work of putting these
things on) tend to be getting a little older. Younger ones may not have the
time nor the inclination (No time? Shy? Not feeling 'up to it'?, etc.) to
take up the mantle.

Thirdly, I have used to the stiffen the edges of lace; spangle wire (24 and
26 gauge), different sizes fuse wire and millinery wire. Spangle wire and
fuse wire don't rust. Millinery wire which is cotton covered steel will rust
if in damp surroundings; spangling and fuse wire are brass/copper based and
cause fewer problems. They look pretty in the edge but they will tarnish and
may discolour the lace on the edges in the long run. Stainless steel wire,
difficult to get hold of and a nightmare to handle as it is very springy,
discolours less. Sterling silver wire is expensive.

I tend to use short pieces (enough for a section such as a petal or a
butterfly wing) with only the ends wound onto a stout bobbin. These curled
up ends will be discarded. Put as few bends, windings and kinks in the wire
between the bobbins at the end as possible, any unnecessary bends etc. can
cause kinking which is particularly difficult to remove. So handle gently
and bend gently to the shape needed as you work the wire into the lace.

Hope that helps.

Happy lace making,

Joepie, East Sussex, UK

It is unfortunately not an isolated problem. It is happening in a lot of the
creative arts. In defense of the younger ones though, as I'm 40 and have
earned my stripes in the business world, I know that sometimes it is difficult
to get others to hand over the reins. It is often frustrating to see things
slow down but not be allowed to do anything about it. I know it is almost
always easier to do it yourself when you have been doing something for some
time, but could I encourage everyone to take a younger one under their
wing, by force if necessary, and plan for them to succeed you. Please don't
see them as a threat or taking over, but as a plan for longevity. It is vital
for the survival of our craft and the diversity of creative arts in our
societies. New blood and new ideas and sometimes new ways are good things.

Re: [lace] lace photos

2013-04-18 Thread Jacquie Tinch
I suspect that it is a combination of things, and the lack of organisers is
almost the least.

One of the main problems is that there are far fewer suppliers, and with the
cost of transporting their goods most of them are not willing to/can't afford
to attend lace days and fairs where they are not even going to cover their
costs so there is now a small core of them who are at nearly every event over
quite a large area and it is unusual to find anyone else. It is only the very
largest fairs who are still able to attract a wider range of them.

Related to this there are also fewer lacemakers (and this situation will
continue until we can get more and younger people enthused), at the moment
possibly with less available money, and they know they are going to see mostly
the same suppliers so why bother to go to the lace day or fair. If they do go
it's to meet friends and chat, not to buy from those same suppliers, which in
turn makes the suppliers less likely to attend that event again. A real vicious
circle.

Add to that the cost of venues and insurance is going up (although cover for a
UK lace day is free to Lace Guild members), making it more of a gamble for the
organisers that they won't be out of pocket at the end of the day.

Many of the events in Spain at least have some back up support in the way of
venue and/or finance from the local government, because the Spanish authorities
take their lace heritage more seriously than their counterparts in the UK.

 wouldn't the half-hitch cause problems?

Absolutely, Ayla! Using wire requires a special bobbin. There are a number of
different types, designed to meet the various weights (sizes) of wire in a
project. You will never want to put a hitch on wire... It will crimp and
never straighten again.

Sorry I can't provide more information but I have only had a tiny exposure to
wire lace... Enough to know the challenges!

Re: [lace] lace photos

2013-04-17 Thread J D Hammett

Re: Spanish Lace Pillow Re: [lace] lace photos - what is it?

2012-05-02 Thread Carolina de la Guardia
As a picture is worth a thousand words, here it is a link to a Spanish
lace supplier, who sells all type of pillows, now used in Spain:

http://www.boixet.com/index.php?cPath=22language=en

The traditional one is the straw long vertical bolster pillow, it is
intended to work straight long laces. They can be of different
diameters, depending on the wideness of the lace to be worked. Usually
we support them against a wall and/or a table.

 http://www.boixet.com/index.php?cPath=22_52

In Galicia (north of Spain) varies slightly the shape, being more wide
and some times half bolster pillow, with two sticks on the top to better
support and recline on a table.

In the South West of the country lacemakers who work tape laces, they
use a shorter bolster pillow, similar to Italian and Slovenian ones with
a horizontal wooden support.

Nowadays polystyrene is also very often used, overall when a large shawl
or runner is in process, as well as round pillows.

All weekends in Springtime and Summer you can find lace days all over
the country sometimes in little villages, where it is usual to find a
Civic centre where aged people make laces as a pastime.

Here there is another link to another lace day, this in Alcanar (Valencia)

I'm sure our Spanish lacemakers will join in this discussion.

Re: Spanish Lace Pillow Re: [lace] lace photos - what is it?

2012-05-02 Thread AGlez
Hello all those interested in Spanish lace,

Sorry for not having got in touch before. But I have a good excuse: I have
been at the Diada of Arenys, and afterwards took a few days off at the
Mediterranean coast.

As Carolina has already told you, in Spain there are now so many lace
meetings, that it is sometimes difficult to choose which one to attend. Not
all of them are interesting. It all depends on what you are looking for.

The Diada of Catalonia is, evidently, the most interesting of all, not only
because of the number of participants, but also because it has an
international presence. For example, in Arenys we could see an exhibition
of important lace centers of Europe, such as Peniche (Portugal), Bobowa
(Poland), Idrija (Eslovenia), France (sorry, but can't remember now which
lace center was there!). And from Spain, our most important lacemaking
centers were there: Arenys de Mar and Arenys de Munt (with a long tradition
and a museum), L' Arboc (also long tradition, specific type of lace and
also a museum) - both in Catalonia-, Almagro (also long tradition and a
museum), Camariñas (also long tradition and museum)...

Apart from this exhibitions, and conferences and courses held in Arenys
along the whole week, the meeting itself gathers thousands of lacers from
all over Spain. They sit at those big tables you have seen in the pictures,
and make lace. Each group of lacers brings their best laces with them...

But... not all lace meetings of Spain are the same. You are only seeing a
selection of laces in these Picasa albums, usually the best pieces. But,
normally you only see lots and lots of torchon and not so well done works.

Something I like at the meetings is that there are many selling points:
here you can buy many things you don't easily get in your local shops.

I am going to write a short text about The Diada in my blog. Coming soon.
I will tell you about it, so that you can read and see.

Hope this answers some of your questions about lace in Spain.

Best regards from Antje, in Guadalajara, Spain.

Greetings,

On the first web address above, picture 141... What kind of lace is it? I have
an antique shawl made of this kind of lace that was labeled Milanese when I
bought it. However, I knew even then that it wasn't Milanese, but I've been
puzzling ever since on exactly what it's proper name is. It looks to me to be
more in the family of Beds-Maltese-Cluny but doesn't quite fit the stereotype

Every year, (in a different city) takes place in Catalonia the Lace Day
Event La Diada de la puntaire that is The lacemakers Great Day. It
is organized by the Catalonian Lace Association-ACP, and this year the
demonstration was the 29nth April in Arenys de Mar, city with a great

Other activities that we had the opportunity to enjoy were:
A fashion show. An international participation with stands from Hungary,
Idrija, Slovaquia, France, and other traditional lace areas of Spain as
Camariñas, Almagro, Arboç, Arenys de Munt and Arenys de Mar. Also, an
interesting exhibition in the Mares Lace Museum.

2.300 lacemakers were participants in the Diada and up to 50 vendors.
Next year the event will take place in the city of Barcelona, probably
26nth May, 2013.

As Bev well says, these type of laces are the traditional guipure laces
we make in Spain, they have a certain familiarity with Cluny laces. They
have a plaited ground, leaves, and the outer edge ends with plaits
forming pointed edges with picots (puntillones). Other pictures that are
within this Spanish lace are: 73, 79, 100, 104 and 140.

Re: [lace] lace photos

2011-03-18 Thread Carolina de la Guardia

Well, I think I can put my two cents in this discussion

Here in Spain we talk of encaje popular this is popular lace, what
you you call continental guipure. This is really a type of Cluny lace.
Camariñas on the North and Almagro on the centre of Spain are the most
representative villages of this technique.

I understand Torchon lace, as a geometrical lace that in the origin had
not guipures (leaves and tallies). Here in Spain, we have mixed the
geometrical lace (ground and motifs) with guipures, plaits only on the
border and, in many occasions a gimp outlining floral motifs. This is a
way of not being so bored, and get richer the original torchon which is
quite limited when designing. On the other hand, perhaps a way to look
like the blonda, made in Catalunya since 1800.
Torchon grounds are made in different ways, depending on the area. In
Catalunya, we usually work it as: tt c tt pin c tt, being the result a
round hole.

In others parts of Spain, it is made: tt wholestitch pin wholestitch tt
(I think it is called by Bridget Cook, as torchon double ground).

This last, is the way that I understand is worked the piece that
Lorellei has shown us. I know the lady that has worked the piece. She is
living in the North of Spain, in Galicia, where the torchon ground is
made in this way.

The lace in Spain, is very difficult to settle, the terminology is
different North / Centre, East and South, the way of working is
different too, even the name given to the lace tools, for example the
most basic: Bobbins, they can be named as: Boixets, palillos, bolillos...

Kind regards from a sunny Barcelona

I suggested to Lorelei that the ground in the pictures was whole stitch pin
whole stitch and she replied that that was what she meant by Brussels
ground.
I am not very good with ground names because I find that stitch
descriptions are more accurate. But, I went to Cassell illustrated Dictionary of
Lacemaking and they claim that the Brussels ground is a droschel ground.
According to the book, Each hexagon consists of two vertical plaits of six or
seven half stitches, followed by an extra twist on each pair so that the
diagonal pairs linking the plaits have a total of two twists. The term is
sometimes erroneously applied to Mechlin ground, a lace with a similar ground
although having a shorter plaits.
If one were to do wholestitch pin wholestitch or some variation of that,
ie. Wholestich pin linen stitch, one might get the same number of crosses and
twists, which is kind of an interesting realization that I had not thought
of. But I believe that Brussels and Mechlin are actually worked as plaits,
and I don't think they have a pin in the middle of the plait. In fact,
although I have never done it myself, I was under the impression that it was
worked without pins at all.
I feel that the picture looks as though there is a distinct pin hole in
the middle of the ground stitch, or plait, if you will. Whether this is
achieved with a single twist, or a double twist around the pin I don't know, and
I don't know what it is called.
What are the common names for grounds? I just looked up Dieppe ground, a
name I recall, and it is half stitch pin half stitch. Spanish ground is half
stitch twist pin half stitch and twist, according to Cassel, resulting in
two twists around the pin, which is sort of noticeable, and which I might
consider to be a candidate if the picture on picassa was clearer. Also the
picture seems to be accompanied by a Spanish language caption, but I don't
know if there if there is any real association between Spanish lace and the
use of the Spanish stitch. I think that neither of these grounds would be
inconsistent with what Lorelei notes as looking like a torchon lace.
However, the thought process has gotten me to thinking about ground names.
Is there any place where you can find all the ground names grouped together
with all the variations in names? And is there any significance to the use
of varioius torchon grounds? I realize that Brussels, Mechlin,
Valenciennes, etc, are chiefly identified by the grounds, but there are a lot
of other
  grounds.
Thanks Lorelei, for opening this line of inquiry.

Hello all,

As a Spanish lacer, I also want to make my small contribution to this
discussion.

Apart from what Carolina has said, there is also a tendency in Spain to take
a pattern or design (which here normally has no instructions on how to make
it), and work it in a free manner. So, you cannot trust, in fact, if this is
a lace from here or there.

The flower motif reminds me of the laces made in Almagro (Ciudad Real), a
very important lace center in Spain. But.. neither the Brussels ground nor
the outside picots are made in this region. So, I would say this hanky of
picasa is a personal interpretation of a pattern.

Best regards,

Antje, from Guadalajara, Spain.

I can remember, many years ago, buying lots of Debbie Moller's patterns
(alphabets, initials et al) and they were very often printed on red paper.
I wondered at the time whether it was to stop illegal copying, as many
photocopiers at that time - we are talking about twenty years ago, if not
more - couldn't cope with very definite colours like red, dark blue and dark
green.I know when the company for which I worked purchased an
all-singing, all dancing, bells and whistles copier, which was the most
up-to-date thing on the planet, I was asked if I'd like to photocopy some of
these patterns on the copier, to see how well it performed.I think they
regretted it, as after that, every strongly coloured pricking I bought, I
asked if I could copy for myself, so that the purchased ones stayed pristine

around stationary objects so you can mount a camera on the back of a chair or

substance that keeps it from sliding or from damaging whatever you wrap it
around. Seems to me these might be excellent for our purposes! It was also
not expensive.

Re: [lace] Lace photos

2007-02-09 Thread clayblackwell
Hi Sue - and other northern hemisphere spiders who are trying to stay warm!!

I've tried numerous ways to photograph my lace with varying results. The best
way I've found is to actually scan it with a dark paper behind it. This
eliminates the problems caused by shadows, over- or under- exposure, flash
burn, camera wiggle, etc.

However, there are times that I want to photograph the lace while it is still
on the pillow, and the challenges in that, as you know, are significant. Since
I now use a digital camera, my observations relate to that, and may not apply
to film cameras.

I have found that using a flash creates more problems than it solves. It
overexposes the lace which means you lose detail. In some cases, it creates a
distracting level of shadow. And it tends to flatten the image, giving the
background as much emphasis as the lace.

I use a nice Ott-light (floor stand) at my pillow. I especially like it
because it has a 27watt tube which is about 18 long. It is positioned at 2:00
at my pillow, and the tube extends over the pillow diagonally to about 8:00.
This provides wonderful light that cancels out much of the shadows created by
pins and even the threads themselves.

So when I take a picture at the pillow, I turn the light on, and use no flash.
And I often use the micro setting on the camera so I can get a good close-up.
When I do this, it is important to brace myself against something stationary,
as the slightest vibration will ruin the picture. I don't have a tripod which
would extend over the pillow, but that would be the ideal solution. The trick
in getting those close-ups is to get close enough to the lace to take the
picture, but not get between the light and the lace!

Another option that I have used when I can't seem to get the close-up I want is
to increase the resolution to a much higher level. Then, when I download the
file, I can crop out the unwanted stuff and the portion of the picture that I
want to keep can be enlarged without becoming pixillated (sp?).

But the hands-down best way to get clear, clean images of your lace is to scan
it.

A few brief thoughts - I have a cold and am working on half a brain today.
Daylight is better than flash, but in England in winter you'll probably have
to settle for flash. Pick background so that it isn't too high a contrast
to the lace, so for white lace don't use anything too dark, mid blue can be
good.
If your piece is small enough then skip the photo stage and just scan it
instead.
Take a look on my website for some examples that may help.

When you have got a photo, then you have half the job done, but only half.
Even an image from a digital camera needs some more work before using it on
a computer. (Grandparents who send 40Mb pictures of their new grandchild to
everyone in their address book, including some on dialup, should have their
computer confiscated!)

Hi Sue and everyone
In addition to the excellent advice already posted, if all else fails and
there is a place nearby that does colour photocopying - get a colour
photocopy done of your lace, and scan the copy for the image you want to
post on the web. The colour scanners have good lenses and often the colour
copies look just like the real thing. Shadows don't seem to be much of a
problem if there is an appropriate background - navy or light blue is
usually good.

Lightly stitch your lace to a background fabric, and afix that to paper or
light card in some unobtrusive way so that the clerk can place it readily
onto the copier bed. Your second generation image can then be scanned at a
low resolution for posting to the web. Plus you have a paper record of your
lace, if you are going to give it away :)

Many thanks to Patti who sent me such good instructions. I won't say it
was a breeeze, but at least I got there in the end!!! :))

My John Bull Trophy entry is there , lower down the page- the Gros Point
flower spray, with the plaited ribbon frame on a burgundy coloured mount.
