" Lets go fucking mental "That was incredible, i didn't think todays fans
could create an atmosphere like that any more . Heard Leicester fans during a
lull giving it the " wheres your famous atmosphere " Well they certainly found
out by the end. The whole ground rocking for the last 10 minutes and post
match - to quote DF it was " unbelievable "
Games like last night make it all worthwhile, and having turned 65 last week,
i was like a teenager again, getting home after midnight and waking my wife up
by walking into the house still singing.
The game itself was strange , at half time we were one down, but should
probably have been in front, a mistake at a corner let them score but Piroe
twice, Gnonto and Summerville should all have scored / worked the keeper. They
were by far the best side ive seen ( apart from us) at ER but did not deserve
the lead.
Second half was worse as they kept us at bay , controlled the tempo , amd hit
us on the break. We rode our luck, an offside goal and two glaring misees plus
a save by Mes kept us in it .
Then following great substitutions, Roberts, James and Bamford , we got a
foothold and started to believe a bit , backed by a vociferous crowd.
Then came the last 10 minutes. A typical Georginio run led to the ball falling
to Roberts stroking it home. A chance of a point.
Then 2 more pieces of good fortune, a speculative shot by Archie hit not one
but 2 defenders , sending the keeper the wrong way. 2-1 with thr 90 almost up.
My mate even said at that stage " I'll take a draw" thats how good Leicester
had been. Then the coup de gras - Georginio danced through, was clearly
brought down on the edge of the area, up stepped DJ and another slice of luck
as his shot deflected off Bamfords knee and through the keeper, we had done it.
Ok probably undeserved and there will be arguments over who is credited with
the last 2 goals but " we're leeds united we dont give a fuck"
Absolute bedlam or scenes as the kids call it. We are now in the driving seat
for automatic promotion ( cant see us catching Leicester but we are putting
them u der pressure) just hope we haven't used all our luck in this one game ,
but as ghe saying goes, ' you make your own luck in football '
A special night - lets hope it counts for something come the enc of th season.
Great game
Dace

We only lost at Stoke because of the incomprehensible decision to allow
Bamford to take that penalty. Almost certainly if Summerville or Rutter or
Ampadu had taken it, we'd have scored and gone on to take three points. I have
a sinking feeling that that one bizarre decision will cost us promotion.
Cheers!

Re: [LU] Leedslist Digest, Vol 159, Issue 9

2023-09-27 Thread Richard Naef
Hi Alan,

I too remember that afternoon and Delph's supergoal. Brighton had an awful
time before Bloom took including having to play their home games at Gillingham.
Much kudos to their long standing fans, its true that many at the Amex are
johnny come latelys but that's fair enough and I wish them well in Europe,
might even join some mates on a European tour if they let me (they won't).
Tony Bloom made much of his money from Gambling, not just doing it but
consultancy and betting constortiums - so pretty straightforward as far as I
can see and certainly nowhere near as "Funny" as MBS, Roman or the Glaziers.

Saw today Brighton playing Bournmouth today.
Two third division teams with funny money.
I am loving this season, but hoping not to go up.
It's not football or a sport

--
Have to disagree with these comments yesterday.
Brighton are a brilliantly run club who play great football and are owned by a
lifelong fan (not sure how his money can be described as 'funny') who has
transformed the club since taking over in 2009.I was at the Withdean for
Delph's memorable length of the pitch run and delightful finish but was stuck
miles away on a rutted terrace behind an athletics track of the type you'd see
in non-league - and that's where Brighton almost ended up, but Tony Bloom spent
£100m on the new stadium and look where they are now.
Also, if we aren't at the very least hoping to go up, what is the point ?
I have no idea what the last sentence means.

Sadly I tend to agreethere is nothing really to look forward to if
we go back up except hoping flat track bullies like Salah & Harland don't score
too many against us as we struggle to keep our heads above water again. Can't
hope we don't do it though.
-
To follow on from my comments above - surely Bielsa made it clear to anyone who
didn't realise it beforehand that success is possible even without the
resources of the Super League 6.
In 2021 we finished 9th in the PL (above 3 teams playing in Europe this year)
with Arsenal having to win their last 5 games to finish 2 points ahead of us -
again, look at where they are now. Leicester showed that this can be maintained
- from 2015 to 2022 they were incredibly successful for a club with their
resources.
At least Rob has hope - without it I don't see why you would bother.

19/20 they spent 9m euro, received 2m, 21/22 they spent 63.5m euro, but sold

Not sure whether this was a good point or two points lost. It looked to me
that Brentford came with a not to lose attitude especially in the 2nd half so
maybe we should have put our subs on earlier and really gone for it. The
discussion pre-match was whether Rutter would go straight in. A record £36
million pound signing surely had to figure at some point but instead he sat
rooted to the bench for most of the afternoon. I find it hard to comprehend why
he wasn't at very least given 15 minutes. It would have sparked the crowd and
you just never know ? Overall though, I thought this was a better performance
particularly at the back where Wober looks very solid. I hope Marsch doesn't
move him to left back because it's about time we had a central defender who
doesn't fuck up every other match. The tactics continue to mystify though. We
are so narrow that you need someone to take the ball and weave their way
through 3 or 4 defenders to create a chance. It's not going to happen so we
were restricted to long range efforts and one great chance for Willy. Marsch
thought Aaronson and his best match ? Really ? Yes the lad is trying and you
can really see that but the more he tries the more desperate he looks and more
and more things just don't come off for him. Everyone seems to be getting on
his back whereas Roca's non-performances seem to be largely going unecrognised
although I've noticed more and more people commenting about his role in the
team. He was brough to be the creative one in midfield but he tried 2 long
passes yesterday and both were straight to an opposition player. To be fair, he
did lots of work and some nice bits and pieces but he normally just passes the
ball bak or prods it forward 5 years to Gnonto or Harrison. I think we need
better than Roca in this position. With 10 mins to go, Marsh takes Roca off and
puts on Greenwood because he is better at delivering the ball from set pieces ?
But Roca takes corners and has a nice left foot ? The big question now is how
does Marsch accomodate Rodrigo / Bamford / Rutter / Summerville / Sinistera /
Harrison / Gnonto / Geldhardt (going apparently) ? Nice problem to have but
someone is not going to be happy. For me, as good as Rodrigo has been playing,
he's not a number 9 and doesn't hold the line well. Bamford does that so much
better. Also Rutter says he wants to play down the middle. Hopefully we'll get
a look at him against Accrington Stanley on Saturday. Welcome to England
Georginio !
Going to be a fascinating Feb.
Scores:
Meslier - 6. A few punches and one dodgy moment but generally had nothing to do
Ayling - 7. I thought he had a good game. Feel much better with Ayling at RB
than Rasmus Struijk - 6. Did ok, not really troubled. Tried to get forward 2nd
half in his own limited way. Wober - 9. Confident at the back with some great
challenges Koch - 8. Possibly his best game this season. Adams - 8. All round,
good performance Roca - 6. Worked hard with some decent bits of link up play
Harrison - 7. Did ok but certainly doesn't have the same understanding with
Willy as Summerville does Rodrigo - 7. Worked hard and carved out a couple of
half chances Gnonto - 6. Struggled as Brentford always had 2 or 3 men on him
Aaronson - 5. Struggled to make an impact
Subs:
Bamford - 7. Looked lively Greenwood - not on long enough

Marsch - needed subs on earlier and give Rutter 10-15 mins

Dear all,

Quite a few of you will know that lister and member of the Leeds Lards worldnet
team, Dave 'Lido' Dowden has been ill with cancer this past two years. His
illness finally got the better of him late on Sunday night. He was at home with
his family having turned what was a six month assessment into two very full
years.

Those of you who knew Dave would know that he was a devoted Leeds fan but there
was so much more to him. He was a munroist, he enjoyed cycling, and took an
active part in politics in Pudsey. In recent years he was a leading light in
the Pudsey Greenside Greenway project. He also liked a good fire!

A committed traveller, there were few places he had not visited and anyone who
shared those trips will confirm that they were always er, eventful. He made
many of the matches abroad during our most recent European campaigns and quite
a few of us shared those trips. (Anyone going to the Barca game will remember
him and Chris Fitz staying above a sex shop which they were convinced was run
by nuns).

I can not begin to list all the adventures, stories and mishaps he was involved
in (he was short of a big toe after an accident with a lawn mower). One thing I
can say is they were many. Maybe one day someone will collect them.

Anyway, he now joins the other listers in the great list retirement home in the
sky. Dave was a one off and will never be forgotten.

Betty

Dave,
It's absolutely NOT Marsch's fault "that we have no left back worthy of a first
team place and are still relying on an unfit Bamford or a failed Rodrigo up
top." Just a reminder to all the Marsch-haters (and closet anti-Americans): Our
useless left-back Junior Firpo, our failure of a record-breaking signing
Rodrigo and our injury-prone penalty-missing centre-forward Bamford were ALL
signings approved by, and signed during the reign of, Marcelo Bielsa. Just
about every Leeds United supporter and Leeds United beat reporter (Phil Hay,
Graham Smyth, James Marshment, etc.) was saying all summer transfer window that
we needed a reliable goalscoring striker and a left-back. The club has even
acknowledged trying to sign CDK and Gapko (before the desperation purchase of
Gnonto on the last day of the window). There's no evidence that (unlike some
recent managers) Marsch was insisting on having a tiny squad, let along telling
the board not to buy a centre-forward and a left-back. (Bear in mind also that
of the four players who can play in that position, three - Dallas, Struijk and
Hjelde - are injured/recovering from an appendectomy. On current form I would
put Firpo behind all three on the "depth chart" in that position.) It's
reasonable to cast a harsh light on Marsch for his team selection versus
Leicester, the tactics and the lack of a Plan B (hmmm, where have we heard that
before?), but it's completely unfair to blame him for big money purchases that
the club failed to make in the window.
I continue to believe that if just a couple of the turning points in recent
matches (e.g. the ref's failure to send off Saliba for his pull-back on
Bamford; the missed penalty versus Arsenal, etc.) had gone our way, we'd be
having a totally different conversation. But I also realize that it's got to go
our way soon or not at all (for Jesse). On the plus side, how long before Mateo
Joseph and Sonny Perkins are ready to step up a level? Joseph just scored his
third hat-trick in eight league games for our top-of-the-table unbeaten
Under-21s.

Leeds United’s last taste of relegation came in 2007, and on the eve of that
season Ken Bates invited the coaching staff to a lunch at Elland Road. It was
how Bates liked to kick things off — a last chat between chairman and manager
before business got underway.Leeds had lost in the Championship play-off final
a few months earlier, falling one win short of the Premier League. Bates wanted
to know how his manager, Kevin Blackwell, thought the next nine months would go
and Blackwell was painfully honest. There’s a danger we might go down, he
warned. The squad is past its best and hasn’t seen enough improvement. Another
promotion bid would be asking a lot. Bates’ wife was so annoyed by the
negativity that she got up and left the table. There was none of that friction
at Leeds last summer, or nothing out of the ordinary. Marcelo Bielsa was not in
the habit of sharing dinner with the club’s board and the board knew better
than to distract him with a new season about to begin. Talks about a contract
extension had been protracted, but Bielsa’s contract talks usually were and
these negotiations had been less complicated than the previous round. He was
showing no inclination to leave. On the contrary, he had carefully monitored
the installation of new state-of-the-art pitches at the stadium and training
ground — work costing seven figures. His attitude was unchanged and physically
Leeds had never seen him in better shape. The contentment, the confidence, the
sense of order — so much of it felt like another lifetime as Leeds avoided the
guillotine by the skin of their teeth at Brentford, clawing themselves to
safety on a final day to beat all final days. There was Stuart Dallas saying in
July that the club’s readiness was “more advanced” than it had been for the
2020-21 Premier League season, optimism born of the fact that the players were
smashing running targets at Thorp Arch. There was Andrea Radrizzani talking
about his attempts to persuade Bielsa to de-stress, describing the day before
the season began as “like the night before an exam. Obviously you stress but
when you have done your job well, relax and enjoy”. In everyone’s opinion,
Bielsa was on top of his. There was Victor Orta joking about the fan who sent
him a letter detailing 62 ways in which Orta went wrong while Leeds were
heading for ninth in the top flight. “You have to have a lot of free time to do
that,” Orta said. Bielsa’s coaches privately believed this season might be more
challenging, but after a top-half finish in their first year after promotion,
their caution was relative. It was business as usual, life as usual and Leeds
as they had come to be. The colour draining from the faces of Radrizzani, Orta
and CEO Angus Kinnear said everything as relegation crept up on them and almost
swallowed them, their self-assurance blown apart. From top to bottom, the club
had been blindsided. But after the torment came the reprieve, an emotion so
sharp that only a relegation battle can cause it. On the pitch, in the dugout,
in the directors’ box there was love, there was relief, there was beauty in
living to fight another day, the apparent inevitability of the drop turned on
its head. A scrape as close as this cannot happen again, not if Leeds want to
be all they can be, but there was, momentarily, a glorious sheen on Leeds as
they swarmed the pitch at Brentford; many wrongs to right but, against the
odds, the heart still beating. One of Bielsa’s side projects in his last close
season was the construction of a gym at Elland Road, costing more than £100,000
and built for the non-playing staff who worked there day to day. It was
designed by his wife and named after a long-time employee at Leeds, Peter
“Stix” Lockwood, with whom Bielsa was close. Leeds were elevating their
infrastructure — pitches, gym equipment — but not dramatically elevating their
squad. The plan was to sign a left-back and a central midfielder, their two
priorities. They were also open to moving on a winger if any of those Bielsa
rated became available as the transfer window wore on.Bielsa signed off on a
£12-million deal for Junior Firpo from Barcelona and, after much analysis,
asked Leeds to go after Conor Gallagher. Gallagher was available on loan from
Chelsea but the approaches made for him by Leeds and Crystal Palace for him
were different. Patrick Vieira, Palace’s manager, spoke to Gallagher

Agree, appreciate a balanced report.

I also agree that Roberts hasn't stepped up, but he doesn't force Bielsa to
play him and until Bamford is back or Geldhart is 100% match fit and ready to

Thanks for the report Dave, reflected how I felt leaving the game. Shame about
that 4th goal, we had a bit of fight for a while around the time we scored. I
felt quite sorry for some of the younger players - what an environment to have
to step into, but I thought they all performed at least creditably. I
particularly liked the way Drameh at R Back didn’t let it all phase him -
because he had some difficult moments but he dug in and made some decent
contributions. Gelhardt took a difficult game with thin pickings on the chin
and kept at it, causing problems right to the end…but yeah, our player of the
year so far has to be Meslier. If he goes into the Physio’s room it will be for
shellshock.

Onwards with MB.

Re: [LU] Coach 22

2021-10-17 Thread Richard Naef
Fair enough, i tend to agree. The last 10 games of last season we were top 2 in
form. This season we are bottom 4. IMO neither position is a true reflection
of our current status. While Rodrigo or Costs have in no way justified their
price tag, there are many that have, let's give Firpo and Koch more time to
prove they are on the positive side.

Someone asked the question about getting rid of Bielsa, and it is, sadly, a
fair one? Accepting the unbelievable progress of the last 3 years, performances
which I’ll never ever forget, Bielsa’s methods have been neutered by many
teams, and unless we score a hat-full then our defensive structure means we are
completely naive at times! Simply repeating the same mistake time and again,
with lesser quality players than our first xi, seems idiotic.

We can now see why Bielsa stays only a short time at teams - he gets sussed
out, and then finds another group to ‘indoctrinate’. When it works it’s
brilliant!

At what point though does the club start to ask him questions, and will he
simply walk?

There are 7 teams with 7 points or less - I think we can muddle our way to
safety, but I’m short of belief that this is going anywhere near the 9th place
of last season, although I’d settle for 17th. Unless our prospects improve I
think it’s unfeasible we’ll be hanging on to the likes of Rapha, Phillips etc
for more than this season? What are the odds of Newcastle coming in for them in
January?

I still hope I see us with Shack in midfield and Drameh at right back, and
soon! And Roberts nowhere near the first xi :-(

I don’t think anyone sane is suggesting we replace Bielsa ?Well nobody I know.
We’re struggling and I think a few players who hit the heights last year just
can’t get there this season for whatever reason (Klich, Dallas, Harrison). The
spine of Bielsa’s team have all been injured and some continue to be so
(Llorente, Philips, Raphinha and Bamford) and the players coming in to replace
them are not performing (Rodrigo, Struijk, Roberts).I think we miss Allioski
more than I thought we would. We hardly attack down the left side anymore and
certainly not with the pace and directness that Harrison and Allioski used to
do.This is Bielsa’s biggest test so far and hopefully he’ll show us he can turn
it around because that performance yesterday was a real horror show and if we
continue to play like that we will go down.

Watching the highlights of a pretty abject performance yesterday, a problem
occurred to me: Bielsa has gotten players like Kalvin and Bamford playing in a
way that no other coach has ever managed. And when the team succeeds it’s
because he’s got them playing in a way that none of our previous coaches ever
have. So for all the problems we’ve got - a small squad, no plan B, a
reluctance to change underperforming players - I wonder if a different coach
would be able to change anything, given the players we’ve got? I mean, Bielsa’s
the coach who turned Luke Ayling into someone people talk about being called up
for England. Is there anyone else who can do that, or would they need to spent
£30m on a new right back?

In other words, if Bielsa is the best manager for this group of players, don’t
we kind of have to just stick with him, at least until we have 11 Raphinhas
available for selection…?

Ed.

Brolin signed.  The first post was from Helen Hamshaw(?): 'We have a new

The amount of posts generated that day was huge.

It was a great intro to what would turn out be be the most entertaining, funny,
diverse, (downright subversive at times) list I have ever been a part of.  For
a while at least.

These days a 25m signing rates no posts at all.

I blame society.

And rather shamefully, I have to admit I was also screaming at Sterling as he
was being pressured in their box: "Dive, you bastard, dive... you choose TODAY
to stop diving???" :-)

On a nostalgia trip, I found a good quality video of that game against
Southampton.
It was uploaded in Apr'20 so it might be new to some of you.
35mins of highlights.
It's been converted to widescreen, so presumably the top and bottom of the
original MOTD video has been cut off, but it doesn't seem to be detrimental to
what you see.
Some quick close-up shots of the crowd here and there, so you might get to spot
a long-missed relative, or a younger version of yourself.
The passing sequence at the end of the game is rightly remembered, but there's
another after the fourth goal that it just sublime. "Oh, so easy" says Barry
Davies at the start of it.

Good.

He has been annoying at times, but I think there might be a really good player
in there trying to get out. I have a hunch that he is brilliant in training but
has yet to reproduce that on the pitch.

He tries to be too clever sometimes, but I get the feeling that coaches have
encouraged him to be like that.

With Berardi leaving lufc after the game tomorrow it seems a good time to  copy
and paste an article my son sent to the Square Ball ( they did not print it) -
sums up Berras contribution to the Leeds cause

Cometh the hour, cometh the man. That’s always been true of Leeds United.

A glance through our history shows that even in a team game, we’ve always had
players that distil what our club stands for at a moment in time. The yardstick
by which we measure everyone else who pulls on the white shirt.

Billy Bremner’s “Side Before Self” mantra isn’t just a slogan. It epitomises
the grit, effort and togetherness of Revie’s family. The words are immortal,
like Bremner is immortal, like that whole, dwindling team will be forever
immortal.

For Wilkinson’s driven professionalism, read Gordon Strachan. Simon Grayson’s
all out attack with no thought to defence sounds a lot like Jermaine Beckford.
Then there’s Colin’s hoofball distilled into the dour, dire Michael Brown, and
Cellino’s entire half-arsed, egotistical era taking the form of Guissepe
fucking Bellusci — a man convinced he knew better than a whole fanbase pointing
out his painfully glaring mistakes.

And then there’s Gaetano Berardi.

No recent player has taken it upon himself to embody Leeds United as the team,
the club, re-invents itself time and time again quite like Berardi.

Thrust him into the chaos of Hockaday, Milanic and Redfearn, and he’s a chaotic
element. Violent, untrustworthy, borderline insane, yet still someone the fans
are desperate to love.

Fast forward to Garry Monk, and Berra embodies The Group™. “Pontus Janson, Kyle
Bartley. Luke Ayling and Berardi.” A player so intrinsically part of a greater
collective that his first name is written out of the chants from the Kop. Under
the Snake, Leeds came close, but were never ever going to be quite good enough.
Not that anyone at Elland Road would admit that. Except for the one man who
came out and demanded that the team replace him with a better left back.

We didn’t need a better left back. We needed a better manager.

We got one.

While Bielsa provided the brains, Kalvin the heart, and Pablo the wizardry that
we needed to finally end sixteen long, tedious, terrible years, Berardi was the
soul of the team. Committed. Driven. Uncompromising.

Want someone to train like a demon even when he’s not being picked? Berardi.
Need someone to fill in at centre half? Berardi. Need someone to find a
Centenary kit to raise funds and refurbish a hospital? Berardi.

Looking for a neat summation of just how much we lost the plot that night
against Derby? Well. Look no further.

Marcelo Bielsa took League One Liam, the only academy midfielder we couldn’t
cash in on, the world’s most unloved nomadic striker, and a rag-tag collection
of also-rans and never-weres and moulded them into Champions. A team defined by
unwavering commitment and professionalism. The willingness to go the extra
yard, both when it mattered and when it didn’t.

It’s fitting that what could be Berardi’s last game in a Leeds shirt didn’t
matter. We were up. We were Champions. We were a combination of half pissed and
fully hungover. And he still gave it his all, paying the price to the tune of
one career-threatening knee injury. Bielsa’s approach demands nothing less.

For the Premier League, Leeds will need another man to step up and take the
mantle. To embody a club with ambitions — replacing delusions for the first
time in 16 years — of grandeur. To stand toe to toe with the best and beat them.

But for one night, battered and bruised on the top of a bus, Gaetano Berardi
was all of us for one last time. Sixteen years of suffering released in two
simple, triumphant words.

How does it feel, Gaetano?

“FUCKING GREAT!”

To me, the ONLY downside to this season (Apart from no fans of course) is
simple; we've lost 4 times to the two most boring teams, scoring no goals in
those 360 minutes.

The way Wolves and Brighton set up and play, isn't unattractive and is very
much based on possession - But they both, ultimately, want to try and walk it
into the net ala Barcelona under Pep. Against teams like this, we clearly
struggle (Both will finish below us in the League). MB will, I'm sure, be aware
of this and, hopefully address next season.

Genuinely not bothered about the drubbing at Old Trafford or MOST of the
defeats this season, other than those 4. Those 12 points would have put us 5th,
1 point behind Leicester!

Mind you, I (personally) don't want European football yet. If we did I think
we'd suffer in the same way Wolves have done by overachieving a bit too soon,
without having the ability to bolster the squad in preparation for the 'rigours
of success'

Anyway, enough of my bollocks, off back to lurkdom! TTFN

Leeds Twitter went into meltdown when the team was announced, the vast majority
saying it was madness and that Bielsa was too stubborn, never learned etc.
All the oft repeated bollocks, like the famous Bielsa Team meltdown comment
that outraged much the same people when Karen Carney made it.

The thing is that MB isn't perfect, but he is thorough and everything he does
is done for a finely detailed and researched reasons, mostly beyond our ken or
experience. I'd guess he chose the same team, because of the options he had,
the things he's seen in training, the research he had done on Tottingham, his
50 years of experience. In the case he got it 100% right. On other occasions
he might not, but it won't be down to stubbornness. This doesn't mean I don’t

Re: [LU] The t-shirt

2021-04-21 Thread Richard Naef
Klopp had obviously completely lost the plot, his diatribe against Neville was
non-sensical. It was obvious at the back of it he was enraged by the actions
of the stupid owners, but of course couldn't say as much, so lashed out at
Leeds and Neville.

Henry's apology was pretty toe curling, but at least he made it - Scum's owners
just forced Woodward to take a bullet. As for Tuchel's "I trust the owner"
"it's not our concern", what a wimp!, but then again critics of Roman tend to
ends up in bits spread over Siberia, so understandable.

The t-shirt would have been the least of Klopp’s worries if there’d been fans
in the ground :-)

Apparently the t-shirt was just the icing on the cake - they’d been into Leeds
earlier and received a number of ‘greetings’ from the locals about the Splitter
League - it seemed he didn’t like it. Just as well he didn’t come to Leeds in
the 70/80s ;-)

I don’t think anyone will care what the views of the Splitter 6 are for quite
some time. I saw John Henry giving some half-arsed apology earlier - looked
like Grandpa Walton. Boy has his stock gone down on Merseyside.

I thought the official LUFC Tweet referring to them as Merseyside Reds was
genius!

Pre game my lad texted me to say how much he has looked forward to this fixture
but now that it was here it did not really interest him . We could not go to
the game and it had no bearing on our seasonHe came to mine to watch it and
bythe final whistle we were leaping around the room like we had just won the
leagueWhat a result , what a performance Ok the stats suggest we should have
lost by 4 or 5 goals but, in reality as well as the goals we had the best
clearest chance ( Raph clean through) - they huffed and puffed but only created
half chances as we were steadfast on our defence.Personally I thought the red
was harsh ( stamp by sterling looks just as bad on SLO mo, plus late taking out
of Raph) but unlike when Arsenal benefited from getting a red it just put us
under the cosh, and how we responded Every man jack of them put themselves on
the line and gave their all - and all without resorting to time wasting or
general shit housing - we tried to play football and repel wave after wave.
Sure we rode our luck and relied on their profligacy that on another day would
have cost us , but we did it with style and still tried to win it So when
Alioski played it through to Dallas to finish with aplomb it was deserved- the
fact that KP was given man of the match with Dallas a very close second rather
than Meslier in a game when they claimed to have 21 shots or whatever shows how
dangerous those shots were (or weren’t)So put Man City in the list with
Leicester as teams at the top who we have beatenA great dayDave

yearthere are still 12 games to go so let's see where we are after
them.

What he means is: let's see if Leeds are still keen to keep me after the next
12 games (b/c it could all go horribly wrong, you never know.)

Any other manager would be leveraging his success over the last 30 months to
insist on a massive 4 year dealand then if things DID go horribly
wrong over the next 12 games it would cost the club a fortune to sack him.

Bielsa truly is from another world.

Struijk did miss 2 v good chances and had one well saved. All from corners or
free kicks. BUT as the eternal optimist I'd rather conclude he's getting into
the right position, and it looks like something we've been working on. Cooper
seems to use him as a battering ram and near the end of the match nearly got
one himself. I'm sure it'll reap rewards soon.

Well that was almost too easy - I was never worried that we may drop points
after the early goal, just a bit of “ will we regret these misses “I think they
were the joint worst team we have played ( with West Brom)We are looking very
secure in mid table now a great achievement especially when we bought 4 players
to raise the quality and only Raph is playing ( and what a player)I don’t think
bamford got the credit he deserved for that brilliant touch to set himself free
and clear but i suppose his awful finish did negate all his hard work and skill
in setting it upIt was a positive sign making chances from corners even if
Struik messed them upAll in all a good solid performance and result against a
well established mid table team and 6pts from 3 games ( deserved 7) which
beforehand we would have been happy with 3So a very satisfying season and we
should finish high enough to attract more and better players Dave

That really is the saddest news possible.

Over the years I’ve met Guy whenever we were in Amsterdam - beer was always a
feature. We last met a couple of years back in In De Wildeman, Guy’s spiritual
home, along with Roger Goodair, and I was also training up an apprentice - my
lad Danny. After sampling many delights from the beer menu, laughs galore (Gay
Tourist Info service featured as I recall), my last sighting of Guy was him on
his bike, his crutch in a hockey-stick holder, weaving his way unsteadily down
Nieuwendijk, one leg stuck out to the side after his tram collision. I had to
contact him later for peace of mind to make sure he’d made it home.

The best company you could wish for, fabulously interesting, knowledgeable in a
million and one random subjects, an encyclopaedic knowledge of drinking
establishments, and the founder of the lists breakaway cycling group.

I’ll miss him very much indeed - a true one-off.

Older listers may recall how flights of blue-and-yellow macaws appearing
over our terrace in Caracas in 1997 proved to be harbingers of a (slightly)
glorious FA Cup run which saw us eliminate Palace & Arsenal before
ignominiously losing at home to Portsmouth in the 5th round (on a day when
the macaws failed to appear.)

Wellon a walk from Robin Hoods Bay to Ravenscar and back this
morning we saw 5 peacocks.and 0 magpies.

Maybe this is Bielsa acknowledging that a key part of his strategy means
wingers run themselves into the ground, so he’s doubling up on options. Having
looked at a couple of Raphinha (sp?) videos, I’d say Alioski and Costa were now
second choices, and agree that Douglas will probably go, given he’s behind
Davis too.

The Hernandez/Roberts creativity thing is a potential issue, but MB seems to
know what he’s up to :-)

OK folks.those who are based outside the plague-ridden insular
island..got any updated tips for streaming matches? Last few seasons I
used crichd or usagoals. Both were about 75% OK.sometimes I'd get a
pretty solid stream (V.often via LUTV or the oppoes TV site), but occasionally
it would be infuriatingly sticky.

Anybody got any more reliable sites?

I've a feeling that Sky Sports have technology which interferes with illegal
streams, and I am worried that they will deploy it with greater ferocity for PL
matches.

Re: [LU] Joe Bryan free kick & Lukic blunder (Rambling)

2020-08-17 Thread Richard Naef
What a lovely story. Your kids will regret not paying more attention to their
old man's stories. When you are dead they'll try and remember how their
parents met and if my experience is anything to go by, it'll be a game of
Chinese whispers ending up with; in about 1981, dad took his then girlfriend
to see the Paddington Bear Musical starring Brain Rix at the Highbury
Palladium. The show was cancelled due to the untimely death of co-star Clive
Dunn, famous as TV's Corporal Smith. To make it worse, Dad's mate Adrian
Butterworth copped off with Dad's girlfriend, Dad went out on the piss, got
lucky and pulled and the rest is history.

This is a bit passe now, but did the Joe Bryan goal remind anyone of a
particular goal against Leeds by Graham Rix in 1983.

It was an FA Cup replay at Elland Rd. Aidan Butterworth had just put Leeds
ahead against 1st Div Arsenal and it was the dying seconds of Extra time.

Rix then hit a practically identical free-kick, which totally deceived John
Lukic, even down to the way he over-emphasised his intention to cross it to the
far post.
I also remember it taking an age to cross the line on a muddy pitch as Lukic
scrambled across the goal-line.

I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve seen another such perfectly disguised
free kick until Bryan did it.

It has a kind of significance for me, as I’d attended the first draw at
Highbury. So I decided that I had to see the conclusion of the tie, again at
Highbury thanks to Arse winning the toss.

I got to London with my then girlfriend, only to find that ref Clive Thomas had
called the game off very late in the day. After a bit of a pub crawl round the
Paddington area, I ended up proposing to my now wife, so made the journey home
engaged.

I still blame/thank Clive Thomas for the way everything turned out. When I
tried to show my now 36 and 34 year old offspring the similarity of the goals
at a family get-together, I could not find the Rix goal anywhere on the
internet, although Butterworth’s is there in various places.

Needless to say, the ‘kids’ were completely underwhelmed by all this, even
though it is at least partly responsible for their very existence!

KOT.

PS Arse eventually won the 2nd replay a couple of days later

Now that we’re in the same division as Manchester again, I’m just wondering if
there’s much to dislike about them anymore.

None of their players raise my hackles, Marcus Rashford is positively a
National Treasure, and the Baby-Faced Assassin is pretty likeable too.

Maybe I need some motivation.

Here’s a Pathé Newsreel from 1951:

It’s not the 4-0 scoreline, we’re Second Division to their First after all ***,
no, it’s the Pathé commentary, it thoroughly winds me up.

Is it too late to write to them and complain?

*** Although I would expect Richard Walker to come down heavily on the

The poor defending from corners seems to be an LU tradition, and I can’t tell

I won’t judge Brentford too harshly on the Fulham game, because they’ve played
some great football this year - Benhrama was played very deep, which didn’t do
him any favours, and Fulham got their tactics spot on.

It’ll be interesting to see who comes in though.

Re: [LU] Benhrama and Watkins

2020-08-05 Thread Richard Naef
FROM BBC Website

Brentford forward Ollie Watkins can leave for £18m as a buyout clause has been
activated following Tuesday's Championship play-off final defeat by Fulham.

The clause kicked in if Brentford missed out on promotion to the Premier
League, BBC Sport understands.

Crystal Palace lead a number of clubs interested in the Devon-born 24-year-old,
signed from Exeter in July 2017.

Palace came close to signing Watkins last season, when the clause was £10m.

Watkins scored 25 goals in 46 Championship games for Brentford this season.

Is he worth 18m? If JKA was worth 15m then defo.

I'd take Watkins, definitely. Fits into our style of play, holds the ball up
well, is quick and can finish. The genius' Thomas Frank was outwitted yesterday
by an average manager, quite funny really.

Benrahma reminds me of Mahrez. Drifts in and out, scores some very good goals
but too hit and miss.

We were (Apparently, on that Phil hay article) looking at the Fulham lad who
scored both goals however! That's probably not happening now.

I just love the attitude by some on here but mainly on Twitter that Bielsa
knows best and can do no wrong. In fact, if truth be told his management in
last night's game was woeful and I'd put it right up there with some of Kevin
Blackwell's finest.
The question is how do you replace Phillips ? Now in his head Bielsa has his 2
players per position rule. This is almost a religious belief for him and the
fact Forshaw is injured really messes with his mind. Ok, even if we accept that
there is nobody at the club who can sit in front of the defence and play square
and backward balls all day how can you possible explain the way he went with 3
at the back with Ayling as the main central defender ? It was ludicrous.
Barnsley immediately cut us open with some pretty basic balls on to runners in
the box. You could see Bielsa wasn't happy and I'm sure he tried to change it
in that first half but all the seemed to happen was confusion. White was
stepping backwards and forwards,Beradi was operating in a free role and Ayling
showed he's not a central defender or a great passer of the ball from that
position. His kick for touch in the first half made me spill my wine in
laughter.
Now you can dismiss this as a blip but if you look back on Bielsa's career he
has a habit of not getting teams over the line after a great start. I think
we've got too many points for that to happen now but last night was a real
concern for me. It was obvious from the start that Bielsa was the most nervous
man in the ground and the transmitted to his players via his manner and his
tactics. We were v.lucky last night.
and before anyone comes back with the Bielsa is God post, yes I think he is. To
get what he's got out of that team which in my opinion has some very average
players is truly remarkable.

I’ll ignore the snipes at Shackleton - pretty pointless thread.

‘Bielsa understands players and knows what they can and can’t do’ said Richard
N.

No-one thinks that what Bielsa has achieved with this group is anything less
than miraculous, but he himself says he doesn’t always get it right, and he
definitely didn’t last night. The fact that White effectively reverted to
centre-back underlines that - Ayling might get away playing centre-half against
defensive teams, but he was pants last night. Equally, using Hernandez instead
of Shackleton helped in being over-run at times, and whilst he eventually
recognised this, with Hernandez spitting his dummy out, he got that wrong as
well.

We were very fortunate Barnsley’s finishing was so rank - only 2 shots on
target, the same as us.

After all the games when we played teams off the park and dropped points,
playing so poorly yet getting 3 points was deserved.

There is zero point in me saying it, but playing people in their best positions
would appear to give us our strongest team. I’m still a fan of playing a left
footer at left back too, but can’t deny Dallas’ value at times.

Just watching WBA v Hudds - West Brom were awful for 25 minutes, but then they
bossed it for 20 mins. 1-1 at half-time. Weird league.

A good dose of realism there Matt, except for the "If"  . I agree Bielsa's
not going to make wholesale changes, plus of course being Leeds the financial
situation for the Premier League has gone to shit, so the normal £120M+ that
gets bandied around will be substantially less. I think there's a decent
chance we'll get out of JKA deal - I don't think the player will want to come
and if he can't agree terms its off. Remember we gave Arsenal a decent game
when we played so it shows we can compete at least with bottom half premier
teams. Blades bought in a few players and are puling up trees, Villa & Fulham
spent loads and went straight down.

Factor in the need for a goalie and striker in addition to the new CB wouldnt

Bielsa probably wont want loads of new players anyway

[LU] FW: Tribute to The Legendary Jack Charlton

2020-07-13 Thread Richard Naef
Couple of lovely stories from Thirkers.

If you haven’t already, check out his website at
www.thirkersleeds.co.uk so many lovely pictures
of our heroes.

Jack Charlton, God Bless you and Thanks………..Another of my Heroes Gone…….

Here’s a couple of amusing true stories about my meetings with Jack Charlton.
As I say these are true and not made up. They both amused me at the time and
I still smile whenever I think about him. The first story of meeting him was in
1963.
in Leeds, on a Sunday afternoon. At the time I was courting my first wife. I
didn’t get
on with her father at this time, so when we met it was at the the bottom of the
road,
leading up to the Whincover Estate. Opposite this, is the Ring Road and years
go it
was a vast green area with a cricket field. I got there a bit early and as it
happened,
being Sunday afternoon there. Was a cricket match being played. I parked up my
Vespa scooter just off the road and there used to be a couple benches for
spectators
to sit on and watch the the cricket, the bench was empty when I sat down.
Fooiishly
I was a smoker at the time, I got my baccy tin out and started rolling a fag.
Just as
I started, someone came and sat next to me on the bench, all of a sudden a
voice say
have you got tabby mate??? I looked to the side of me and to the shock of my
life,
It was Jack Charlton. I obviously said of course you can after I’d rolled my
fag I gave
the baccy tin to him and he rolled his own. We both lit up and had a chat, he
was a
lovely man, so natural, unaffected a real decent ordinary bloke.

The next time I met him, was in Malton near York. Jeannie, my missus and myself
were
at a Ford Dealership, Malton, launch of a new Ford or something. We were
invited because
the previous year we had bought a new Ford van and we went along because we
knew Jack,
Charlton was a guest speaker, along with the 'now' infamous Stewart Hall. This
was in about
the mid eighties and I was a Charter Boat, Angling Skipper. At the refreshment
interval,
knowing Jack was a keen angler I approached him and gave him one of my business
cards,
thinking maybe sometime I would get a booking from him. He took the card got
out a pen,
signed the card and gave it straight back to me. I explained the reason for the
card and we
both had a good laugh. At question time, I was first up and I asked him. "Why
on earth did
you never manage Leeds United”. He said “Simply because they never asked me”.
He would have been great as Leeds Manager, in all his managerial positions he
did well, even
at international level. That’s another record breaking Leeds United legend and
World Cup
winner that have gone….

God Rest His Soul, and heartfelt condolences to his family.

There will never be another Leeds United player to touch the magnificent record
of Jack Charlton,. A one club man, He started as youngster in the same team with
the late great John Charles. He will now be spoken of in the same breath as the
Gentle Giant, John Charles./

John Charlton OBE DL (born 8 May 1935) is an English former footballer and
manager who played as a defender. He was part of the England team that won the
1966 World Cup. He spent his entire club career with Leeds United from 1950 to
1973, helping the club to the Second Division title (1963–64), First Division
title (1968–69), FA Cup (1972), League Cup (1968), Charity Shield (1969),

Second Division (1955–56) and five second-place finishes in the First Division,
two FA Cup final defeats and one Inter-Cities Fairs Cup final defeat.

His 629 league and 762 total competitive appearances are club records. He is
the elder brother of former Manchester United forward Bobby Charlton, who was
also a teammate in England's World Cup final victory. In 2006, Leeds United
supporters voted Charlton into the club's greatest ever XI.

Called up to the England team days before his 30th birthday, Charlton went on
to score six goals in 35 international games and to appear in two World

He played in the World Cup final victory over West Germany in 1966, and also
helped England to finish third in Euro 1968 and to win four British Home

website thirkerleeds.co.uk is well a look a real nostalgic trip for Leeds fans
and Loiners in general.

Excellent video Rare Documetary from 1968 gt

The story of Jack and Bobby Charlton during their playing days of 1968 .. One
of legend.
And yet, as is revealed, its roots are modest and earthy - The Charlton boys
are a disparate
pair both on and off the pitch. What links them, other than their love of the
game, is their
heritage. Without football they would most probably have worked side-by-side in
an Ashlington
mine, together with their Dad……Enjoy>>>>>>>>

We weren't playing as well last season as we are now. For me, from the kick
off, it was when and not if. I think it's the same for the players. We've won
7 out of the last 9. Bamford is scoring again and we have genuine options on
the bench.

Must admit when Bamford and Roberts had shots blocked/cleared in quick
succession, I thought that was such a ‘Leeds’ type of miss.
But I actually enjoyed watching the 2nd half today after Leeds scored the 2nd,
rather than being a bag of nerves. Great play and excellent goals. Should
have been many more end results like that this season based on general play.
Still got this horrible memory of 1 point from the last 4 games last year, and
a similar collapse 3 years ago to miss out on the play-offs. But I would have
settled for 10 points from the first 5 games back.
