[LegacyUG] A Plea To The Developers
Many times we see references made to the various .USR files that control various options (mainly reporting) for the program. The on-line help has a list of the file names and an indication of what they purport to apply to. Since these appear to be predominantly text files, and can be viewed with Notepad, would it possible to enhance the specifications of these files so as to permit the inclusion of comments in the files? Then, some future release/upgrade to the files could add titles and descriptions to the files, making it easier for the less-technically equipped users to see at a glance what each file is for. -- Regards, Mike Fry Johannesburg Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergr...@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp

This was because there were administrative structure already in place. Of course, over time, the Registration Districts themselves have also been changed to better fit with the changing population demography. Mike, I can't really disagree with that, although I do not know if it applied to all, but really my main point was that they developed a life of their own, indeed the name of the Registration District sometimes has no relationship to the area it covers. Then I printed the chart I wanted. Next week I shall have to repeat the process, but with a very much larger group of people. I have already decided to tag all the ones I want, and then to export all the tagged ones in a gedcom. Re: [LegacyUG] Vacation?
Some mailing list software has a nomail setting, where you can remain a subscribed member of the list but not receive the posts - particularly useful when you want to retain customised settings or access restricted archives. I think this is the sort of thing the original poster was thinking of when asking the question. We do not have this option on this list. You're either subscribed and receive the posts, or you're not subscribed and don't. Michele, Do you mean you cannot get it onto one sheet? If so I am not surprised, even if you did I suspect that it would be too small to read. What can be done though is to move the lines and boxes so that they are not cut into peices ny the page edges. There is a File/Import and Export function that relates to user settings, cookies, favorites, and that God-awful .PST file from Outlook (which is one huge encrypted file of one's personal data to include all email and other info). Yes, Dennis, I agree that the FDB files are no problem. For a renewed installation, one needs 1. The database file; it is in the location described in Customise-Locations; and all the other files (pictures etc.) associated with it in the locations described there 2. The .usr files from C:\Program Files\Legacy 3. The .rf1 files defining report settings - wherever they are to be found. I always keep a directory for them alongside my data directory, and when I have a report as I want it, I save to that directory. 4. Others that I don't know about, such as spelling etc. Book reports etc seem to produce vast numbers of files without extensions. Liz, 1,2 3 should cover most of what you need. RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting into MS DOC
Michele, I presume you are meaning a Descendant chart (or any chart) from Legacy Charting. Try this. Download the free program pdf995 (Google it) and set it up as a printer ie so you can print anything to .pdf files. When you have your chart go to the symbol in the top left hand corner and to Print. In Printer properties select PDF995 as your printer, press OK, select the name and place you want the file, and Save. This effectively prints a pdf file. This file can then be emailed as an ordinary .pdf file attachment. The file will print a multi page output (the same page layout as you had on the original Charting chart) and it has a small blank edge strip on each side of the page. Trim (say) the left side of each page back to the text and then match to the next sheet and glue in place to make one long chart. If you put a border around the chart, this acts a guide for trimming, and for accurate alignment between pages. Practice on a small 3 page chart! In Legacy Charting 7 (similar in Legacy) you CAN save in different formats. The most useful to email is probably pdf. Here is how: 1. In Legacy Charting click on the main icon top left 2. Click Save As 3. At the bottom of the new window, choose Save as type: and you bomb out! There are no alternatives there. That does not work. Weird. Now I remember! 1. Click on “Publish†2. Export to File 3. Choose jpg in the new window (better for charts than a pdf) 4. Select destination folder and enter your own file name 5. Click OK. My problem went further. I wanted different colours in a family chart, to illustrate different branches by DNA mutations. To do that I right click on the file name in windows, and I select “Open with….†And then open the jpg chart with “Paintâ€. Then I used the “paint†program to colour in the squares in the jpg image. It worked like a charm. There was another area in which I had to be cunning. Some charts will not show only the direct line of descent to specified descendants. The chat shows every one of all the siblings in every generation. That really clutters the page with masses of useless siblings. I solved that by creating a new tree, a duplicate of the one I was working in, and from the duplicate I simply deleted all the unwanted siblings until I had only the people I wanted in my chart in the family tree. Then I printed the chart I wanted. Next week I shall have to repeat the process, but with a very much larger group of people. I have already decided to tag all the ones I want, and then to export all the tagged ones in a gedcom. The nuisance of this is that I have to search out and individually tag fifty people and their direct paternal ancestors only – each one by hand. Legacy can certainly work on defining the parameters of groups more specifically. The boolean stuff is a bit too thin in the current search facility of Legacy. I compare the stuff we have now to the eighties, and my mind boggles at the thought of the software our grandchildren will use! I didn't mean to infer switching to an encrypted file such as the Outlook .PST file. What I meant that within the Outlook program there is a menu item to import or export the info. In the case of Outlook, in can be in the form of a CSV file. I challenge anyone to save your cookies, especially from within Win7, without knowing a few tricks. And in this case, Internet Explorer has made it extremely easy by having a menu item to import or export your cookies or favorites all in a plain text file. I would like to see a similar menu item in Legacy. First select export, then choose from a laundry list of items to be exported, and then just a path choice to save the new file. Transferring to a new computer or upon a total re-install of Legacy would be just the reverse: first select import, etc, etc, etc.. Re: [LegacyUG] A minimized window cannot be maximized
I am new to Windows 7 myself, and have noticed that when I minimize a screen; a miniature of it hovers on the bottom left of the 'main' screen. Clicking that brings it back. I have had as many as 4 'minis' hovering at the same time. I don't like it, but the powers that be decided we would like it. My only option is to restart Windows. For example, if I navigate to a certain person in my file, then open the individual information screen and finally open the clipboard. So far so good. However, if for some reason I want to minimize the clipboard or any other window that can be minimized I cannot reopen or maximize the window. Clicking on any window gives me the signal that I can't go on unless I maximize the already minimized window. Neither can I enter any information or move to another individual. My only option is to Ctrl-Alt-Del or to go to start and shutdown or restart. Then reopen windows. I'm using Legacy 7 build 109 on a Dell desktop using Windows 7 Pro. Any suggestions? Doug, Same thing happened to me last week when I tried to send a message. Looked at my E-Mails and I didn't have any for the prev three days. I just resubscribed. If you haven't seen all the problems with the message they send out, usually is a space missing between / and optin and you have to move the link in two parts into your browser. RE: [LegacyUG] RE: Verify your subscription to LegacyUserGroup mailing list
For the record, 8:30 pm on Monday, January 25, 2010, I am getting messages, so I must be verified . . . but I’m not seeing my posts . . . regarding Backups and Restore. I resorted a file just now, and am not sure how to get the pictures all to link up. I can find them when I go into edit them. Is this what I will have to do for all 140 pictures in Legacy/Picture file? Then will I need to merge the two files into one, so I can have all the names I just put in? or will that even work? Nina, Welcome to Legacy! Copy and paste the link - being sure to have it ALL (no spaces) - it is split artificially in your email. Should work! [LegacyUG] Unknown Maiden Surnames of sisters
When tidying up my files in preparation for Legacy 7.5 and the FamilySearch interface. I came upon the following problem. I had adopted the practice of using ? as the Surname of sisters when I did not know their Maiden Names. Consequently when I deleted this surname I lost the relationship of sisters. Can someone please advise me the correct whey of overcoming this problem. RE: [LegacyUG] Unknown Maiden Surnames of sisters
It may not be the right way, BUT, as a work around I give the surnames I don't yet know, Zebra or Zelma or something with a Z as somewhat of a place holder. That way when I see a Z name, I know it means I don't have it yet! This is just my work-around. I hope this helps! -Original Message- From: Doug [mailto:littlehand...@gmail.com] Sent: Monday, January 25, 2010 11:39 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Unknown Maiden Surnames of sisters When tidying up my files in preparation for Legacy 7.5 and the FamilySearch interface.
